Development and Effectiveness of an End-of-Life Care Program for Faculty in the Critical Care Field: A Randomized Controlled Trial

In Japan, end-of-life care education in the critical care field is still insufficient. Therefore, this study developed and verified the effectiveness of an end-of-life care program for faculty in the critical care field in Japan through a randomized controlled trial. The study was implemented from September 2016 to March 2017. Participants were 82 college teaching staff and nurses working in the critical care field. Six months after the program, data of 37 members (84.1%) of the intervention and 39 members (84.8%) [corrected] of the control group were analyzed. The results demonstrated that the primary end point-"confidence in teaching" 6 months after program completion-differed significantly between the 2 groups (2.5 [0.69] in the intervention group vs 1.8 [0.46] in the control group, P < .001). It is suggested that attending this program will give faculty in the field of critical care continued confidence in their end-of-life care teaching, as well as allow them to implement end-of-life care teaching in their field.

The Meaning and Application of Student-Centered Learning in Nursing Education: An Integrative Review of the Literature

AIM

The aim of this study was to review empirical articles to explore the meaning and the application of student-centered learning in nursing education.

BACKGROUND

Teachers in higher education are encouraged to adopt student-centered learning principles, but research shows that many still apply teacher-centered methods. There is therefore a need to clarify the meaning of student-centered learning, including how it is performed and the reasons to apply it in nursing education.

DESIGN

This study employed an integrative review method, following Whittemore and Knafl's framework.

METHODS

The databases CINAHL, Education Database and Education Research Complete were searched for related literature published from 2010 to 2020. The initial search located 308 articles. After screening and checking for eligibility, 25 articles were critically appraised. Data were extracted from the articles and displayed in matrices to be categorized and compared.

RESULTS

Three themes with attendant sub-themes emerged through the analysis: foundation, using core concepts to define and explain student-centered learning, eligibility, enhancing student knowledge, developing student abilities and supporting student self-reliance and realization, learning in interaction with peers, learning individually and learning in interaction with the teacher.

CONCLUSION

Student-centered learning in nursing education is an approach where the teacher is a facilitator of student learning and students are empowered to take control of their own studies. Students study together in groups; they are listened to by the teacher and their needs are taken into consideration. The main reasons to apply student-centered learning are to enhance students' theoretical and practical learning; to improve their generic competencies, such as problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities; and to strengthen students' self-reliance.

Implementation of a Web-Based Educational Intervention for Promoting Flipped Classroom Pedagogy: A Mixed-Methods Study

Introduction

Flipped classroom pedagogy (FCP) is recognised as an effective and efficient teaching-learning method. However, nursing students and teachers may be hesitant to adopt FCP due to technophobia and time constraints linked to academic and clinical responsibilities. This necessitates the provision of promotional training for adopting FCP. However, there is a dearth of research regarding how the practice of FCP could be promoted and in demonstrating its efficacy in developing countries. Thus, this study aimed to examine the educational impact of a web-based education intervention, branded as the Flipped Classroom Navigator (FCN), for promoting FCP in nursing education in Sri Lanka.

Methods

This mixed-methods study employed pre- and post-training knowledge tests, the Instructional Materials Motivation Survey (IMMS), the Perceived Transfer of Learning Questionnaire survey, and collected students' and teachers' open-ended responses to evaluate the impact of the FCN. Fifty-five undergraduate nursing students and 15 university teachers participated in the study from two state universities in Sri Lanka. Repeated-measures ANOVA, t-tests, Levene's test of homogeneity, Cohen's d, and an inductive thematic approach were employed in the data analysis.

Results

Post-training knowledge test scores were significantly higher than the pre-training knowledge test scores indicating improved understanding of FCP. Participants were also highly motivated to learn in the FCN instructional materials. Participants exhibited positive attitudes towards FCN training with transfer of learning to their teaching-learning practice. The inductive thematic analysis identified the following themes: user experiences, FCN learning content, behaviour changes, and suggested improvements.

Conclusion

Overall, the FCN enhanced both students' and teachers' knowledge and understanding of FCP in undergraduate nursing education.

Hot topics and frontier evolution in college flipped classrooms based on mapping knowledge domains

With the outbreak of COVID-19 and the development of online teaching, the online flipping teaching mode has attracted increasing attention. Systematic analysis of the research status and development trend of the flipped classrooms is significant for guiding the improvement of the quality of online flipped teaching. This study used the metrology software CiteSpace to draw a scientific knowledge map of relevant research in the web of science database from 2013 to 2021. It performed visual analysis of research authors, research institutions and countries, keyword clustering, keywords co-occurrence, and keyword time zone distribution. The results showed that: (1) The flipped classrooms research has attracted increasing attention from the social and educational circles, however, the relationship between relevant research authors, institutions, and countries is not close enough, and there is little cooperation. We need to strengthen cooperation further and realize the sharing of high-quality resources; (2) Based on keyword co-occurrence cluster analysis, this study identified three hot topics, namely, preparation before class, classroom activities and consolidation after class; (3) According to the keyword time zone map, this study divided three frontier evolution trends: exploration period, adaptation period, and growth period; (4) Finally, with the spread of novel coronavirus, it is suggested to promote the online flipped classroom teaching mode, and put forward reasonable suggestions from the perspective of teachers, students and researchers, and look forward to the future digital development direction of the flipped classroom.

Nursing students' motivational and self-regulated learning during the COVID-19 pandemic: A cross-sectional study

On‐site clinical training, which has been greatly hindered during the COVID‐19 pandemic, is essential in nursing practicum. This study aimed to identify the predictors of nursing students' motivational and self‐regulated learning in clinical nursing practicum during the pandemic. This cross‐sectional study aimed to identify the predictors of motivational and self‐regulated learning among nursing students in clinical nursing practicum during the COVID‐19 pandemic. An online survey was completed by 195 nursing students in Korea in 2021. Students' moral sensitivity and motivational and self‐regulated learning were assessed using the Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire and the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire. Multiple regression analysis revealed that moral sensitivity was the most potent predictor of motivational and self‐regulated learning, followed by online clinical practicum experience, determination to become a nurse, and online practicum type; these factors explained 21.0% of the variance. Practicum courses using a tailored hybrid model, combining online and in‐person approaches for imparting nursing practices and inspiring moral sensitivity, can enhance nursing students' motivational and self‐regulated learning. Modules to enhance nursing students' moral sensitivity should be included in online practicum curricula.

Voices from undergraduate students and faculty members regarding the status and challenges of baccalaureate nursing education in Myanmar: A qualitative study

OBJECTIVES

To clarify the present status and challenges of nursing education in a baccalaureate degree program in Myanmar.

DESIGN

A qualitative descriptive design using focus group interviews.

PARTICIPANTS

Undergraduate nursing students and faculty members from the University of Nursing in Myanmar.

METHODS

Focus group interviews were separately conducted for each group of undergraduate students, and junior and senior faculty members. The interview guide for the students was about their perceptions and requests regarding their nursing education. For the faculty members, the interview guide was about their current perceptions and challenges regarding nursing education. Each group interview took about 60 min.

RESULTS

Eight undergraduate students, eight junior faculty members, and six senior faculty members were eligible to participate. The undergraduate students voiced their requests for improvement in teaching methods. They described their struggles and learning process from their clinical placement experiences, as well as their distress under the present educational environment. The faculty members described their perceptions and challenges regarding inventiveness in teaching methods, challenges in conducting clinical placements, lack of educational devices and facilities, and innovation requirements in the faculty organization and system.

CONCLUSION

The present status of nursing education in a baccalaureate degree program in Myanmar reflects ongoing serious challenges in undergraduate nursing education as expressed by both undergraduate students and faculty members. Their voices echo a pressing need to implement alternative methods of nursing education for better academic outcome. Moreover, continuing education is realized as crucial for capacity building and professional development of faculty members.

Meta-Analysis of Flipped Learning Effects in Nursing Education

Background: This study is a meta-analysis confirming the effect size of clinical competence, critical thinking ability, self-directedness, and learning satisfaction, the outcome variables of flipped learning applied to nursing education. Methods: We selected 18 related studies that analyzed data using CMA (Comprehensive Meta-Analysis 2.2). Results: The effect size of the entire study was Hedges’ g = 0.68 (95% CI = 0.43~0.92). The heterogeneity of the overall effect size was I² = 90.7% (Q = 246.67, p < 0.001); critical thinking ability had an effect size of Hedges’ g = 0.87, learning satisfaction of Hedges’ g = 0.79, clinical competence of Hedges’ g = 0.53, and self-directedness of Hedges’ g = 0.37. The differences were statistically significant. Conclusion: Flipped learning can effectively improve nursing students’ clinical competence, critical thinking ability, self-direction, and learning satisfaction.

Assess the feasibility of flipped classroom pedagogy in undergraduate nursing education in Sri Lanka: A mixed-methods study

Background

The nursing education system has evolved with an increased emphasis on student-centred education, such as implementing flipped classroom pedagogy. Given the promising positive educational outcomes, the trend of using flipped classroom pedagogy has become increasingly popular in undergraduate nursing education. However, little is known about how these flipped classroom methods impact on nursing educational practices in limited-resource settings situated in South Asia.

Objective

To assess the feasibility of implementing flipped classroom pedagogy in undergraduate nursing education from the nursing students’ perspective.

Methods

This mixed-methods study employed a quantitative survey and six focus group discussions conducted in three state universities in Sri Lanka. The Nursing Students’ Readiness for Flipped Classroom (NSR-FC) questionnaire was used to collect quantitative data. The semi-structured focus group discussions were conducted by using 18 reflective and open-ended questions. Descriptive statistics and multivariate analysis of variance methods were employed when analysing quantitative data. An inductive thematic analysis approach was used to summarize the focus group discussions.

Results

The questionnaire survey revealed that nursing students reported high levels of personal, technical, and pedagogical readiness across all three universities, while environmental readiness was perceived as low. The inductive thematic analysis identified three themes, namely: enablers, challenges, and benefits. Specifically, nursing students valued the student-centred approach. They were ready to utilize their own devices to overcome limited technological provision; however, a short training session about how to engage in the flipped classroom was desirable. Also, their exposure to basic educational technology was perceived as adequate and they were aware of the positive outcomes of flipped classroom pedagogy.

Conclusion

Nursing students were ready to enrol in a flipped classroom programme. The provision of technological resources in the education environment was identified as a great challenge for flipped classroom implementation. Overall, the findings indicate there are promising feasibilities for the flipped classroom implementation.

Effects of flipped-learning-based simulation for nursing students: a retrospective survey

This study analysed whether Situation-Background-Assessment-Recommendation (SBAR) simulation, which uses a flipped learning method, improves undergraduate nursing students' academic performance and core competencies when applied in the mental health nursing practicum, as compared with traditional in-person simulations. To this end, a retrospective survey was employed. A group of 37 students who participated in the flipped learning-based SBAR simulation practicum was compared with a group of 37 students who participated in the practicum using a traditional learning method, in terms of their academic performance and core competencies. The 90-h practicum included four three-hour SBAR simulation sessions. Students were assessed at baseline, immediately after the two-week practicum, and four weeks later. The effects of group, time, and group-by-time interactions between the groups were verified using generalized estimating equations with an autoregressive correlation structure. Data were collected between March and July 2017, in South Korea. The results indicated that SBAR simulation significantly improved nursing students' communication performance compared with the traditional learning method. The clinical practicum based on SBAR improved core competencies at the post-practicum and four weeks later. In conclusion, the application of the flipped learning-based SBAR simulation can improve nursing students' communication skills and can be utilized as an effective teaching method to promote higher order competencies to apply, analyse, and evaluate knowledge beyond simple understanding and information recall. This study has addressed how academic performance and core competencies in nursing can be improved through SBAR simulation using a flipped learning method and shown its positive impact on nursing students' communication skills and higher order competencies.

Changes in Core Competencies among Korean University Students Due to Remote Learning during the COVID-19 Pandemic

This study aimed to determine the academic performance and learning skills of students who studied through remote teaching methods during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. It was conducted in February 2021 with 398 university students in South Korea. Data were collected through online surveys. Generalized estimating equations (GEEs) with an autoregressive correlation structure were employed to distinguish differences in core competencies, academic performance, satisfaction, and usefulness of teaching methods before 2019 and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings revealed that the overall core competencies of participants were significantly lower in 2020 than before the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, knowledge construction, responsibility practice, and socialization were significantly low during the COVID-19 pandemic, whereas information management and identity value did not show a significant difference. However, problem-solving was higher during the COVID-19 pandemic. Enhancing the core competencies of university students is integral in the new learning environment of the post-COVID-19 era. It is necessary to devise approaches that improve the effectiveness of remote teaching methods and simultaneously augment student satisfaction.

Exploring the pedagogical design features of the flipped classroom in undergraduate nursing education: a systematic review

Background

In recent years, technological advancement has enabled the use of blended learning approaches, including flipped classrooms. Flipped classrooms promote higher-order knowledge application – a key component of nursing education. This systematic review aims to evaluate the empirical evidence and refereed literature pertaining to the development, application and effectiveness of flipped classrooms in reference to undergraduate nursing education.

Methods

A PRISMA systematic review protocol was implemented to investigate the literature pertaining to the development, implementation and effectiveness of flipped classroom pedagogy in undergraduate nursing education. Seven databases (Scopus, PsycINFO, CINAHL, ERIC, MEDLINE, Cochrane, Web of Science) were utilised to survey the salient literature. Articles were appraised with respect to their level of evidence, the origin of study, study design, the aims/s of the study, and the key outcomes of the study. A qualitative synthesis was then conducted to summarise the study findings.

Results

The initial search identified 1263 potentially relevant articles. After comprehensively reviewing the initial catchment using several analytical phases, 27 articles were considered for the final review, most of which were conducted in the USA and South Korea. A range of research designs were applied to measure or discuss the outcomes and design features of the flipped classroom pedagogy when applied to undergraduate nursing education. The review indicated that a common operational flipped classroom model involves three key components, namely pre-classroom activities, in-classroom activities and post-classroom activities, guided by two instructional system design principles. The review predominantly identified positive learning outcomes among undergraduate nursing students, after experiencing the flipped classroom, in terms of skills, knowledge and attitudes. However, a few studies reported contrasting findings, possibly due to the incompatibility of the flipped classroom pedagogy with the traditional learning culture.

Conclusions

Current evidence in this systematic review suggests that incorporating the flipped classroom pedagogy could yield positive educational outcomes in undergraduate nursing education. There are promising pedagogical models available for adapting or developing the flipped classroom pedagogy in undergraduate nursing education.
