Abstract
Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are involved in producing a considerable number of fermented products consumed worldwide. Many of those LAB fermented foods are recognized as beneficial for human health due to probiotic LAB or their metabolites produced during food fermentation or after food digestion. In this review, we aim to gather and discuss available information on the health-related effects of LAB-fermented foods. In particular, we focused on the most widely consumed LAB-fermented foods such as yoghurt, kefir, cheese, and plant-based products such as sauerkrauts and kimchi.

Abstract
Korean fermented kimchi is probiotic food preventing Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)-associated atrophic gastritis in both animal and human trial. In order to reveal the effect of fermented kimchi against H. pylori infection, we performed clinical trial to document the changes of fecal microbiota in 32 volunteers (H. pylori (-) chronic superficial gastritis (CSG), H. pylori (+) CSG, and H. pylori (+) chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) with 10 weeks kimchi. Each amplicon is sequenced on MiSeq of Illumina and the sequence reads were clustered into operational taxonomic units using VSEARCH and the Chao, Simpson, and Shannon Indices. Though significant difference in α- or β-diversity was not seen in three groups, kimchi intake led to significant diversity of fecal microbiome. As results, Klebsiella, Enterococcus, Ruminococcaceae, Streptococcus, Roseburia, and Clostirdiumsensu were significantly increased in H. pylori (+) CAG, while Akkermansia, Citrobacter, and Lactobacillus were significantly decreased in H. pylori (+) CAG. With 10 weeks of kimchi administration, Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, and Ruminococcus were significantly increased in H. pylori (+) CAG, whereas Bacteroides, Subdoligranulum, and Eubacterium coprostanolines were significantly decreased in H. pylori (-) CAG. 10 weeks of kimchi intake significantly improved pepsinogen I/II ratio (p<0.01) with significant decreases in interleukin-1β. Conclusively, fermented kimchi significantly changed fecal microbiota to mitigate H. pylori-associated atrophic gastritis.

Abstract
The fact that Fat-1 transgenic mice producing n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids via overexpressed 3-desaturase significantly mitigated Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)-associated gastric tumorigenesis through rejuvenation of chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) led us to study whether dietary intake of walnut plentiful of n-3 PUFAs can be nutritional intervention to prevent H. pylori-associated gastric cancer. In our model that H. pylori-initiated, high salt diet-promoted gastric carcinogenesis, pellet diet containing 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg walnut was administered up to 36 weeks. As results, control mice (24 weeks) developed significant chronic CAG, in which dietary walnuts significantly ameliorated chronic atrophic gastritis. Expressions of COX-2/PGE2/NF-κB/c-Jun, elevated in 24 weeks control group, were all significantly decreased with walnut (p<0.01). Tumor suppressive enzyme, 15-PGDH, was significantly preserved with walnut. Control mice (36 weeks) all developed significant tumors accompanied with severe CAG. However, significantly decreased tumorigenesis was noted in group treated with walnuts, in which expressions of COX-2/PGE2/NF-κB/IL-6/STAT3, all elevated in 36 weeks control group, were significantly decreased with walnut. Defensive proteins including HO-1, Nrf2, and SOCS-1 were significantly increased in walnut group. Proliferative index as marked with Ki-67 and PCNA was significantly regulated with walnut relevant to 15-PGDH preservation. Conclusively, walnut can be an anticipating nutritional intervention against H. pylori.

Abstract
Kimchi is composed of various chemopreventive phytochemicals and profuse probiotics, defining kimchi as probiotic foods. Concerns had increased on the modulation of intestinal microbiota on various kinds of systemic diseases. Under the hypothesis that dietary intake of kimchi can be ideal intervention for either ameliorating colitis or preventing colitic cancer, we performed the study to validate the efficolitic cancery of fermented kimchi on preventing colitic cancer. Using azoxymethane-initiated and dextran sulfate sodium-promoted colitic cancer models, we have administrated fermented or non-fermented kimchi to modulate colitic cancer preemptively. Detailed molecular mechanisms were explored. Preemptive administration of fermented kimchi significantly afforded colitic cancer prevention through attenuating inflammasomes (IL-18, IL-1β, caspase-1), enhancing antioxidative (NQO1, GST-π), imposing anti-proliferative (Bax, caspase-3, β-catenin), and affording cytoprotective actions (HSP70, 15-PGDH), while non-fermented kimchi did not prevent colitic cancer. Special recipe cancer preventive kimchi (cpkimchi) was more effective compared to standard recipe fermented kimchi (p<0.01), while non-fermented kimchi (kimuchi) worsened colitic cancer development, telling the importance of fermentation in cancer prevention. Repression of NF-kB p65, induction of tumor suppressive 15-PGDH, and inactivation of ERK1/2 by cpkimchi contributed to colitic cancer prevention. Dietary intake of cpkimchi ameliorated colitis and prevented colitic cancer via concerted anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, and anti-mutagenic actions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It seems alternative treatments such as antioxidant intervention and anti-inflammatory intervention adjuvant to antibiotic regimens may enhance cancer prevention approaches and decrease adverse side effects related to therapeutic antibiotic regimens. So, we will evaluate the effects of concurrent omega-3 and cranberry juice supplementation along with standard antibiotic therapy on the eradication of Helicobacter pylori, gastrointestinal symptoms, some serum inflammatory and oxidative stress markers in adults with HP infection. METHODS We will conduct a 4-week double-blinded randomized clinical trial. The subjects will be randomly stratified according to sex and BMI using a permuted block randomization procedure by Random Allocation Software (RAS). They will be assigned to one of the four study groups: (1) cranberry juice fortified with omega-3 Intervention (n=23), (2) cranberry juice intervention group (n=23), (3) placebo beverage fortified with omega-3 intervention group (n=23), and (4) placebo beverage intervention (control group) (n=23). All statistical analyses will be performed using IBM SPSS Statistics software. DISCUSSION A combination of alternative therapies may have a synergistic effect compared to a single approach. It could potentially be more effective in promoting the efficacy of standard antibiotic therapy in eradicating HP infection. Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus is a bacterial pathogen that causes food poisoning, various infections, and sepsis. Effective strategies and new drugs are needed to control S. aureus associated infections due to the emergence and rapid dissemination of antibiotic resistance. In the present study, the antibacterial activity, potential mode of action, and applications of flavonoids from licorice were investigated. Here, we showed that glabrol, licochalcone A, licochalcone C, and licochalcone E displayed high efficiency against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Glabrol, licochalcone A, licochalcone C, and licochalcone E exhibited low cytotoxicity without hemolytic activity based on safety evaluation. Glabrol displayed rapid bactericidal activity with low levels of resistance development in vitro. Meanwhile, glabrol rapidly increased bacterial membrane permeability and dissipated the proton move force. Furthermore, we found that peptidoglycan, phosphatidylglycerol, and cardiolipin inhibited the antibacterial activity of glabrol. Molecular docking showed that glabrol binds to phosphatidylglycerol and cardiolipin through the formation of hydrogen bonds. Lastly, glabrol showed antibacterial activity against MRSA in both in vivo and in vitro models. Altogether, these results suggest that glabrol is a promising lead compound for the design of membrane-active antibacterial agents against MRSA and can be used as a disinfectant candidate as well.

Abstract
Cancer cachexia is a syndrome accompanying weight loss, skeletal muscle atrophy, and loss of adipose tissue in patients with advanced cancer. Since interleukin-6 (IL-6) is one of core mediators causing cancer cachexia and kimchi can modulate IL-6 response, we hypothesized dietary intake of kimchi can ameliorate cancer cachexia. In this study, we studied preemptive administration of kimchi can ameliorate mouse colon carcinoma cells colon (C26) adenocarcinoma-induced cancer cachexia and explored anti-cachexic mechanisms of kimchi focused on the changes of muscle atrophy, cachexic inflammation, and catabolic catastrophe. As results, dietary intake of kimchi significantly attenuated the development of cancer cachexia, presented with lesser weight loss, higher muscle preservation as well as higher survival from cancer cachexia in mice. Starting from significant inhibition of IL-6 and its signaling, kimchi afforded significant inhibition of muscle specific ubiquitin-proteasome system including inhibition of atrogin-1 and muscle ring finger protein-1 (MuRF-1) with other muscle related genes including mitofusin-2 (Mfn-2) and PGC-1α. Significant inhibition of lipolysis gene such as adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL) and hormone-sensitive ligase (HSL) accompanied with significant induction of fatty acid synthase (FAS) and sterol response element binding protein 1 (SREBP1) was achieved with kimchi. As gene regulation, IL-6 and their receptor as well as Janus kinase 2 (JAK2) and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) were significantly attenuated with kimchi. In conclusion, dietary intake of cancer preventive kimchi can be an anticipating option to ameliorate cancer cachexia via suppressive action of IL-6 accompanied with decreased muscle atrophy and lipolysis.

Abstract
Dietary approaches to preventing Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)-associated gastric carcinogenesis are widely accepted because surrounding break-up mechanisms are mandatory for cancer prevention, however, eradication alone has been proven to be insufficient. Among these dietary interventions, omega-3-polyunsaturated-fatty acids (ω-3 PUFAs) are often the first candidate selected. However, there was no trial of fatty acids in preventing H. pylori-associated carcinogenesis and inconclusive results have been reported, likely based on inconsistent dietary administration. In this study, we developed an H. pylori initiated-, high salt diet promoted-gastric tumorigenesis model and conducted a comparison between wild-type (WT) and Fat-1-transgenic (TG)-mice. Gross and pathological lesions in mouse stomachs were evaluated at 16, 24, 32, and 45 weeks after H. pylori infection, and the underlying molecular changes to explain the cancer preventive effects were investigated. Significant changes in: i) ameliorated gastric inflammations at 16 weeks of H. pylori infection, ii) decreased angiogenic growth factors at 24 weeks, iii) attenuated atrophic gastritis and tumorigenesis at 32 weeks, and iv) decreased gastric cancer at 45 weeks were all noted in Fat-1-TG-mice compared to WT-mice. While an increase in the expression of Cyclooxygenase (COX)-2, and reduced expression of the tumor suppressive 15-PGDH were observed in WT-mice throughout the experimental periods, the expression of Hydroxyprostaglandin dehydrogenase (15-PGDH) was preserved in Fat-1-TG-mice. Using a comparative protein array, attenuated expressions of proteins implicated in proliferation and inflammation were observed in Fat-1-TG-mice compared to WT-mice. Conclusively, long-term administration of ω-3 PUFAs can suppress H. pylori-induced gastric tumorigenesis through a dampening of inflammation and reduced proliferation in accordance with afforded rejuvenation.
