Understanding the use and non-use of social communication technologies by older adults: A qualitative test and extension of the UTAUT model

Assessing the Feasibility and Acceptability of Smart Speakers in Behavioral Intervention Research With Older Adults: Mixed Methods Study

BACKGROUND

Smart speakers, such as Amazon's Echo and Google's Nest Home, combine natural language processing with a conversational interface to carry out everyday tasks, like playing music and finding information. Easy to use, they are embraced by older adults, including those with limited physical function, vision, or computer literacy. While smart speakers are increasingly used for research purposes (eg, implementing interventions and automatically recording selected research data), information on the advantages and disadvantages of using these devices for studies related to health promotion programs is limited.

OBJECTIVE

This study evaluates the feasibility and acceptability of using smart speakers to deliver a physical activity (PA) program designed to help older adults enhance their physical well-being.

METHODS

Community-dwelling older adults (n=18) were asked to use a custom smart speaker app to participate in an evidence-based, low-impact PA program for 10 weeks. Collected data, including measures of technology acceptance, interviews, field notes, and device logs, were analyzed using a concurrent mixed analysis approach. Technology acceptance measures were evaluated using time series ANOVAs to examine acceptability, appropriateness, feasibility, and intention to adopt smart speaker technology. Device logs provided evidence of interaction with and adoption of the device and the intervention. Interviews and field notes were thematically coded to triangulate the quantitative measures and further expand on factors relating to intervention fidelity.

RESULTS

Smart speakers were found to be acceptable for administering a PA program, as participants reported that the devices were highly usable (mean 5.02, SE 0.38) and had strong intentions to continue their use (mean 5.90, SE 0.39). Factors such as the voice-user interface and engagement with the device on everyday tasks were identified as meaningful to acceptability. The feasibility of the devices for research activity, however, was mixed. Despite the participants rating the smart speakers as easy to use (mean 5.55, SE 1.16), functional and technical factors, such as Wi-Fi connectivity and appropriate command phrasing, required the provision of additional support resources to participants and potentially impaired intervention fidelity.

CONCLUSIONS

Smart speakers present an acceptable and appropriate behavioral intervention technology for PA programs directed at older adults but entail additional requirements for resource planning, technical support, and troubleshooting to ensure their feasibility for the research context and for fidelity of the intervention.

Uptake and engagement of a clinically moderated digital peer support platform to support the mental well-being older adults: a qualitative investigation

BACKGROUND

The uptake of traditional mental health services among older adults remains low. Digital peer support offers older adults a resource for engaging with others to independently support their mental well-being. This qualitative study explored the uptake and engagement of a clinically moderated digital peer support platform (Breathing Space) for older adults with depressive symptoms and alcohol use concerns.

METHODS

Semi-structured interviews with 30 participants aged 60-80 years explored participants' uptake and engagement with Breathing Space, a novel, moderated, private, and anonymous peer support platform. Data were analysed using reflective thematic analysis and are discussed with reference to the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology2.

RESULTS

Three themes were constructed to characterize participants' experiences: (i) navigating the complexities of peer-peer online engagement; (ii) the function of anonymity in online connection; and (iii) experiences of app features and content.

CONCLUSIONS

Future development of digital peer support for older adults would benefit from the following: (i) co-design with older adults; (ii) providing choice over anonymity and increased options for interacting with peers; (iii) streamlining the basic functionality with popular platforms; (iv) providing options for users to curate their digital experience; and (v) providing telephone support for troubleshooting technical difficulties. Future research should explore the use of digital peer support among older adults who experience social exclusion challenges.

Social Robots for Meaningful Seated Activities: Acceptance & Use by Older Adults

Healthy aging requires the maintenance of good physical and cognitive activity. However, as they age, older adults often experience a decline in physical and cognitive activity, leading to a more sedentary lifestyle. Some older adults may not have a choice but to become increasingly sedentary as they age due to injury or deteriorated physicality. As such, they require assistive technologies to aid in their daily lives and activities to maintain healthy cognitive function. Social Robots are a newer form of assistive technology, specifically designed for social interactions and gameplay. As with other assistive technologies, compliance barriers to their acceptance and use for meaningful, seated activities among older adults are expected. To better explore this phenomenon, improve quality of life and understand what drives older adults to accept and use newer forms of technology like social robots, this conceptual paper conjoins two theoretical frameworks: The Activity Theory of Aging (ATA) and the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). As social robots hold great promise for improving the quality of life for older adults, exploring what driving factors could enable their greater acceptance and use is essential to furthering this field of study within Australia.

Social networking older adults with mild cognitive impairment: Systematic review protocol on their use of information and communication technology

This systematic review will identify and synthesize the emerging evidence on older adults with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) utilizing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to maintain, restore, or augment social networks. The systematic review will consider the evidence on contextual and personal factors of older adults with MCI and their ICT use for social connectedness. The evidence searches will be implemented in PsycINFO, Academic Search Complete, Medline, PubMed, and manual searches. We shall review articles that were published between January 2010 and October 2023 in English and on Information and Communication Technology utility in social networking among older adults with MCI. The process of article selection will be conducted through title screening, abstract screening; and full article screening, following the Population, Intervention, Control, Outcomes (PICO) criteria. Given that all the studies included in this review are publicly accessible and have already obtained ethical approval from their respective institutions, there is no obligation for us to seek additional ethical clearance for our systematic review. We plan to share the outcomes of the systematic review through online presentations and dissemination within the research community. The findings from this review will identify the extent of empirical evidence on older adults with MCI utilizing ICTs to maintain, restore or augment their social networks. This review will provide evidence for contextual and personal factors in older adults with MCI for the social networks with ICT use. This review will propose practical implications for the effective utilization of ICT by older adults with MCI.

User engagement with organizational mHealth stress management intervention - A mixed methods study

Mobile health (mHealth) demonstrates great promise for providing effective and accessible interventions within an organizational context. Compared with traditional workplace interventions, mHealth solutions may be significantly more scalable and easier to standardize. However, inadequate user engagement is a major challenge with mHealth solutions that can negatively impact the potential benefits of an intervention. More research is needed to better understand how to ensure sufficient engagement, which is essential for designing and implementing effective interventions. To address this issue, this study employed a mixed methods approach to investigate what factors influence user engagement with an organizational mHealth intervention. Quantitative data were collected using surveys (n = 1267), and semi-structured interviews were conducted with a subset of participants (n = 17). Primary findings indicate that short and consistent interactions as well as user intention are key drivers of engagement. These results may inform future development of interventions to increase engagement and effectiveness.

Associations between older adults' social media use behaviors and psychosocial well-being

BACKGROUND

Research examining associations between social media use behaviors and psychosocial well-being among older adults are limited.

AIMS

To explore associations between older adults' social media (social networking services and instant messaging applications) use behaviors and psychosocial well-being.

METHODS

This was a secondary data analysis. All data were retrieved from the Taiwan Communication Survey database, an annual survey that examines trends in Taiwanese residents' communication behaviors and social media use. The original investigation was conducted in Taiwan from September to December 2019. Data from 647 older adults aged over 60 years were extracted for the analyses. Social media use behaviors (users/non-users and time spent using), positive psychosocial outcomes (life satisfaction, self-determination, subjective well-being, and happiness), negative psychosocial outcomes (loneliness, depression, and anxiety), and demographic variables were included.

RESULTS

Social media users had significantly higher levels of subjective well-being and lower levels of depression, anxiety, and loneliness compared with non-users. Time spent on social networking services was significantly and positively correlated with negative psychosocial outcomes (β = 0.103, p = 0.044, f2 = 0.011), and it was significantly and inversely correlated with positive psychosocial outcomes (β = - 0.063, p = 0.049, f2 = 0.004). Time spent using an instant messaging application was significantly positively associated with positive psychosocial outcomes (β = 0.068, p = 0.031, f2 = 0.005). The proposed path model had an acceptable model fit.

DISCUSSION

Study results indicated that older adults' social media use behaviors were associated with their psychosocial well-being.

CONCLUSIONS

Older adults are recommended to use social media for appropriate time periods as an important way to promote social engagement for their psychosocial well-being.

"It's Another Feather in My Hat"-Exploring Factors Influencing the Adoption of Apps With People Living With Dementia

INTRODUCTION

With the growing interest and availability of mobile applications (apps) for people living with dementia, it is desirable to have a broader insight into how technology adoption may be further improved. This paper aims to explore the factors influencing adoption of mobile applications for people living with dementia.

METHODS

The recruitment of participants was facilitated through a dementia advocacy group of people living with dementia. A focus group design was applied to elicit discussion and to explore divergent views on the topic. The data was analysed using thematic analysis.

FINDINGS

The 15 individuals who participated in this study comprised of seven women and eight men within the age range of 60-90 years. This study reports key findings pertaining to the views and experiences of using mobile apps. Data analysis revealed the following four distinct themes; (Theme 1: Living with dementia)-"That's the difficulty there even with apps or anything else." (Theme 2: Motivation)- "It makes me feel good. I feel a little with it [laughs], that its not all gone in there" (Theme 3: Fears and Concerns)- "Can somebody else get into your personal memories?" (Theme 4- Support)- "So it's important that we have that support". Together these themes encapsulate the most influential aspects, as highlighted by the participants influencing the acceptance and adoption of apps.

CONCLUSION

This paper explores the barriers and facilitators to app acceptance and adoption. This includes the importance of "feel good moments" and positive experiences, challenges associated with living with dementia, the importance of ongoing support, and security of the user's information. This study adds to what is already known by capturing the views and experiences of people living with dementia in relation to the factors influencing the adoption of apps.

Factors that predict the acceptance and adoption of smart home technology by seniors in Australia: a structural equation model with longitudinal data

Smart Home Technology presents an exciting opportunity to support seniors living independently in their homes. Despite widespread interest in Smart Homes, seniors' readiness to adopt Smart Home Technology is low. To determine the factors underpinning Australian seniors' acceptance and adoption of Smart Home Technology using an extended UTAUT model that includes Trust, Resistance to Change and Technology Anxiety. A longitudinal study was conducted to validate the proposed model prior to and after the implementation of a pilot Smart Home Modification program for seniors. Structural Equation Modeling has been applied to test the proposed hypotheses using a sample of 60 seniors in regional Australia. Perceived Usefulness is an important predictor of Smart Home Technology adoption by seniors. Trust was found to indirectly predict adoption of Smart Home Technology via Perceived Usefulness. This study showed that Perceived Usefulness and Trust are critical factors for the acceptance and use of SHT by seniors, validating the extension of UTAUT with a Trust factor. This makes a unique theoretical contribution to the literature with implications for aged care providers and policymakers to consider seniors' perceived usefulness and trust in the design, development, and implementation of Smart Home solutions.

A review of the factors influencing adoption of digital health applications for people living with dementia

Objective

Researchers have used various theories and models to understand technology adoption, however, with the growing interest and availability of mobile applications (apps) for people living with dementia, it is desirable to have a broader insight into how technology adoption may be further improved. This paper aims to explore the factors influencing the adoption of digital health applications for people living with dementia and add to the current literature on this topic.

Methods

Searches were conducted in CINHAL, Web of Science, Psych Info, ProQuest Health and Medical, IEEE Xplore and Scopus. Citation searching and handsearching were used in the identification of other studies.

Results

Following an assessment of relevancy, nine studies remained and are included within this review. Methodological quality was assessed using The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT). A thematic analysis was used for the data synthesis of included studies. Each study reported on different types of apps.

Conclusion

From the synthesis of included studies, four analytic themes were identified; Theme 1: Personal and contextual factors; Theme 2: Perceived value and benefit; Theme 3: Design and content of app; and Theme 4: Digital Literacy and Confidence. People are diverse and so are their reasons for the adoption of apps. These findings provide an insight into the range of factors that impact the adoption of apps for people living with dementia. Understanding the factors that impact the adoption of mobile applications is critical to their success. These findings can be beneficial for app developers and for people living with dementia and their carers.

Factors Affecting the Use of Social Networks and Its Effect on Anxiety and Depression among Parents and Their Children: Predictors Using ML, SEM and Extended TAM

Previous research has found support for depression and anxiety associated with social networks. However, little research has explored parents' depression and anxiety constructs as mediators that may account for children's depression and anxiety. The purpose of this paper is to test the influence of different factors on children's depression and anxiety, extending from parents' anxiety and depression in Jordan. The authors recruited 857 parents to complete relevant web survey measures with constructs and items and a model based on different research models TAM and extended with trust, analyzed using SEM, CFA with SPSS and AMOS, and ML methods, using the triangulation method to validate the results and help predict future applications. The authors found support for the structural model whereby behavioral intention to use social media influences the parent's anxiety and depression which correlate to their offspring's anxiety and depression. Behavioral intention to use social media can be enticed by enjoyment, trust, ease of use, usefulness, and social influences. This study is unique in exploring rumination in the context of the relationship between parent-child anxiety and depression due to the use of social networks.

The acceptance and use of smartphones among older adults: differences in UTAUT determinants before and after training

Purpose

This article aims at a Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model framework that was used to investigate the impact of a 16-h smartphone training program on the correlations among different constructs of smartphone use in a sample of older adults.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 208 participants aged 60–78 (mean: 65.4) years completed a questionnaire that collected information on demographic variables and the frequency and duration of smartphone use as well as the answers to questions on the six UTAUT constructs of performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, facilitating conditions, and behavioral intention and usage behavior. The data were analyzed using partial least squares analysis.

Findings

This study was the first to compare post-training changes in the correlations among UTAUT constructs. The results revealed significant post-training changes in all construct correlations. Behavioral intention and facilitating conditions were shown to significantly impact usage behavior both before and after training and performance expectancy was shown to impact behavioral intention before training. After training, both effort expectancy and social influence were found to impact behavioral intention significantly. Moreover, the impact of facilitating conditions on usage behavior was significantly increased after training.

Originality/value

To date, no study published in the literature has investigated the impact of technological training on the technology-use intentions and behaviors of older adults. The findings of this study suggest that, for older adults, the results of the acceptance and use model for smartphones change significantly and positively between pre-smartphone training and post-smartphone training time points. The findings support that technology training has a positive impact on smartphone use in older adults.

DYNAMICS OF ATTRIBUTE-SPECIFIC CUSTOMER REQUIREMENTS IN INNOVATION PROCESSES: A PANEL ANALYSIS CONSIDERING KANO’S THEORY

This study provides new insights into the dynamics of attribute-specific customer requirements in innovation processes. For this purpose, a panel study with three survey time points was conducted based on the Kano model. These time points were localised before and after the launch of a novel scientific online platform. In contrast to previous research, subjects’ responses were linked across the three measurement time points. This matching of the respondents enabled the identification of segments of homogeneous time-dependent shifts in customer requirements and their description based on sociodemographic, acceptance- related, and usage-based characteristics. The results provide academics and managers with practical implications and avenues for future research.

Using Technology Adoption Theories to Maximize the Uptake of E-learning in Medical Education

INTRODUCTION

While the use of e-learning tools in medical education is guided by robust literature on their design and evaluation, there is sparse literature on strategies that maximize their adoption among trainees.

METHODS

In this scoping review, we searched Web of Science for studies on technology adoption theories as applied to education, using a final censoring date of August 1, 2021.

RESULTS

Based on our findings, we identified three representative theories: (1) technology acceptance model, (2) technology adoption life cycle, and (3) domestication theory.

DISCUSSION

We describe these theories in detail, examine their prior applications, and propose specific uses within medical e-learning.

Social Support, Isolation, Loneliness, and Health Among Older Adults in the PRISM Randomized Controlled Trial

Objectives: Social isolation and loneliness are serious public health issues given the association with negative physical, mental; and cognitive health outcomes and increased risk for mortality. Due to changes in life circumstances many aging adults are socially isolated and experience loneliness. We examined the relationships among four correlated but distinct constructs: social network size, social support, social isolation, and loneliness as they relate to indices of health and wellbeing among diverse subpopulations of older adults. Guided by WHO's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) we also examined factors that predict loneliness and social isolation. Methods: Analyses of baseline data from sample of older adults who participated in an intervention trial that examined the beneficial effects of a software system designed to support access to resources and information, and social connectivity. Participants included 300 individuals aged 65-98, who lived alone, were primarily of lower socio-economic status and ethnically diverse. Participants completed a demographics questionnaire, self-report measures of health, depression, social network size, social support, and loneliness. Results: Loneliness was strongly associated with depression and self-ratings of health. In turn, greater social isolation and less social support were associated with greater loneliness. Social isolation was associated with depression and lower self-ratings of health. The association between social isolation and health was mediated by loneliness. Individuals in the older cohorts (80+) reported less social support. With respect to loneliness, having a smaller social network, more functional limitations, and limitations in engaging meaningful activities was associated with higher levels of loneliness and greater social isolation. Conclusion: The findings underscore the importance of social connectively to wellbeing for older adults and suggest that those in the older cohorts, who have a small social network, and with greater physical and functional impairments may be particularly vulnerable to being socially isolated and lonely. The findings provide guidance for future interventions. In this regard, we discuss how Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) may be used to promote social connectivity and engagement. Strategies to make the usability and availability of these applications for aging adults are highlighted.

Barriers and Facilitators to Social Participation in Older Adults: A Systematic Literature Review

Objectives: Social participation has been shown to improve health, well-being, and quality of life in older adults. Previous reviews on social participation have been limited to identifying logistical barriers. The current review sought to examine barriers of social participation more broadly, as well as potential facilitators.Methods: We conducted a systematic review to collate identified barriers and facilitators to social participation in older adults. Seventy-six studies were eligible for inclusion.Results: Four main themes of barriers and facilitators to social participation associated with aging emerged: Demographic factors (such as age and socioeconomic status), Individual/Internal factors (such as motivations and health), Environmental/Infrastructure (such as accessibility, transport, and neighborhood cohesion), and Social Networks (particularly preexisting network size).Conclusions: These findings extended previous reviews to show that personal motivations, preexisting social networks, and neighborhood cohesion play vital roles in improving and maintaining quality social participation. The ability to facilitate this can occur at the individual therapeutic level and at the community level.Clinical implications: The findings highlight the need to consider barriers beyond logistical issues. In particular, healthy aging initiatives may benefit from matching social activities with individual motivations, and preventive measures to establish social networks early in the aging process are important.

Adequacy of Web-Based Activities as a Substitute for In-Person Activities for Older Persons During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Survey Study

BACKGROUND

Senior centers and other types of clubs provide activities for older adults to address boredom, social isolation, and loneliness. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most of these activities have been cancelled. A limited range of web-based activities have been offered as alternatives. However, the effectiveness of these web-based group activities for older adults has scarcely been researched.

OBJECTIVE

We aimed to understand the extent to which web-based activities for older adults provide an adequate substitute for in-person activities.

METHODS

In this telephone survey, we interviewed 105 older adults in Israel who had been offered the opportunity to participate in web-based activities after routine activities closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Of the total sample, 49/105 (46.7%) participated in the activities and 56/105 (53.3%) did not. We inquired about the respondents' background characteristics, satisfaction with the activities, and reasons for participation or nonparticipation.

RESULTS

The respondents who participated in the web-based activities tended to be highly satisfied with at least some of them. They rated the enjoyment derived from the content of the activity as the most important motivator, followed by maintaining a routine and by enjoying the group and the presence of others. Over 50% of the participants (28/49, 57%) wished to continue with the exercise programming after the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, and 41% (20/49) wished to continue with the web-based lectures. Participants were more likely to report partaking in alternative activities than nonparticipants (P=.04). The most common reasons cited by nonparticipants were being unaware of the web-based program (24/56, 43%) despite a notification having been sent to the entire sample, lack of interest in the content (18/56, 32%), and technical issues (13/56, 23%), such as not owning or being able to fully use a computer. Both participants and nonparticipants were interested in a wide range of topics, with many being very particular about the topics they wished to access. Approximately half expressed willingness to pay for access; those who were willing to pay tended to have more years of education (P=.03).

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings suggest a need for web-based activities for countering boredom and feelings of isolation. The main factors that influence the use, efficacy, and sustainability of online activities are access, motivational and need-fulfilling factors, and whether the activities are sufficiently tailored to individuals' preferences and abilities. Challenges in substituting in-person services are promoting social relationships that are currently not sufficiently incorporated into most web-based programs, accommodating a wider range of topics, and increasing the accessibility of current programs to older adults, especially those who are homebound, both during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Barriers to eHealth adoption in routine antenatal care practices: Perspectives of expectant mothers in Uganda - A qualitative study using the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology model

Current empirical evidence suggests that successful adoption of eHealth systems improves maternal health outcomes, yet there are still existing gaps in adopting such systems in Uganda. Service delivery in maternal health is operating in a spectrum of inadequacy, hence eHealth adoption cannot ensue. This study set out to explore the challenges that impede eHealth adoption in women's routine antenatal care practices in Uganda. A qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews was employed to document challenges. These challenges were classified based on a unified theory of acceptance and use of technology constructs. One hundred and fifteen expectant mothers, aged between 18 and 49 years, who spoke either English or Luganda were included in the study that took place between January to May 2019. Thematic analysis using template analysis was adopted to analyse qualitative responses. Challenges were categorised based on five principal unified theories of acceptance and use of technology constructs namely: performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, facilitating conditions and behavioural intention. Facilitating conditions had more influence on technology acceptance and adoption than the other four constructs. Specifically, the lack of training prior to using the system, technical support, computers and smart phones had a downhill effect on adoption. Subsequently, the cost of data services, internet intermittency, and the lack of systems that bridge the gap between mothers and health providers further hindered technology uptake. In conclusion, strategies such as co-development, training end-users, garnering support at the national and hospital levels should be advocated to improve user acceptance of technology.

Design guidance for video chat system to support social engagement for older adults with and without mild cognitive impairment

Background

Social engagement technologies offer an opportunity to reduce social isolation. However, there are barriers to adoption among older adults with and without Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). Technology designed to meet the needs of those users may improve the acceptability, adoption, and benefits of social engagement technology.

Objective

The goal was to assess older adults' needs and preferences for using video chat systems. We used the Technology Acceptance Model as a framework for evaluating and optimizing usability of a web-based video chat system for older adults with and without MCI.

Methods

Mixed methods (qualitative and quantitative) were used to achieve this objective. We developed questionnaires and interviews to identify experiences with video chat, and preferences and attitudes towards a web-based video chat system. We conducted heuristic analysis to evaluate and improve the usability of the system.

Results

Participants reportedly used video chat less than other social network tools (e.g., Email). They were open to using a web-based video chat system to meet new people of all ages with shared interests. Their favorite topics of conversation were books, health, family, and exercise. Their ideal group size for a video chat session was 3 to 6 people. Overall, participants' attitudes toward the system were positive and they perceived the system as easy to use and useful for social engagement. Their evaluations indicated high usability of the system. However, individuals with MCI might require additional assistance to use the system. Usability issues were identified, such as technical terminology, small font size, and potentially confusing icons that were addressed in the redesign.

Conclusion

Older adults, with and without MCI, were interested in using a social engagement technology to interact with previously unfamiliar individuals with shared interests. They provided valuable insights for the design of the systems. Our findings provide guidance for the design of social engagement technologies. Our research approach serves as a case study for the assessment of other technology platforms.

Prediction of the use of mobile device interfaces in the progressive aging process with the model of Fitts' law

PURPOSE

As the population ages, so do the potential users of technology, and older adults' behaviors when using mobile device interfaces are becoming increasingly important. A representative model for detecting older adults' behaviors and performance on the use of mobile device interfaces is needed to provide individualized designs. This research aimed to investigate the applicability of the broadly used model of Fitts' law to detect the progressive changes in the use of mobile device interfaces in older adults. The effect of experience with using technology on performance on a Fitts task was also examined.

METHOD

A sample of 135 older adults was recruited to test the application of Fitts' model to the use of technology by older adult users. Each participant was asked to finish tasks at 9 levels of difficulty, from easy to difficult, in a multidirectional tapping task. Analysis of variance was employed to examine the effect of age on performance on the Fitts task, movement time, and the standard deviation of movement time. Stepwise regression was used to investigate how well age and technology use could predict performance on the Fitts task.

RESULT

Performance on the Fitts task was sensitive to the gradual changes in abilities with aging. Rather than the amount of experience in using technology, age was the stronger predictor of older adults' performance on the Fitts task. Additionally, compared with the younger groups, the users above 80 years old demonstrated significantly higher behavioral variation during the use of mobile device interfaces.

CONCLUSION

This research confirmed that Fitts' law is applicable to the evaluation of the effects of aging on the use of mobile device interfaces. Adults above the age of 80 years should be a major focus for special individualized interface design. This finding can inform future designers and researchers in the development of individualized interface designs for older adult users to enhance their user experiences of mobile device technology.

RELEVANCE TO INDUSTRY

Future designers and researchers can apply the finding on Fitts' law in this research to develop user-friendly interface designs for mobile technology for older adults and thereby improve their user experiences to enhance their independence and quality of life through the use of technology.
