Effects of the sintering conditions of dental zirconia ceramics on the grain size and translucency

The physical-mechanical properties of 3D-printed versus conventional milled zirconia for dental clinical applications: A systematic review with meta-analysis

AIM OF STUDY

This systematic review aimed to compare the physical-mechanical properties of 3D-printed (additively manufactured (AM)) zirconia compared to conventionally milled (subtractive manufactured: SM) zirconia specimens.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A thorough search of Internet databases was conducted up to September 2023. The search retrieved studies that evaluated AM zirconia specimens and restorations regarding the physical-mechanical properties and mechanical behavior of zirconia. The main topic focused on 3Y-TZP. However, records of 4YSZ and 5YSZ were also included to gather more comprehensive evidence on additively manufactured zirconia ceramic. The quality of studies was assessed using the ROB2 tool, Newcastle Ottawa scale, and the Modified Consort Statement. Of 1736 records, 57 were assessed for eligibility, and 38 records were included in this review, only two clinical trials meet the inclusion criteria and 36 records were laboratory studies. There were no signs of mechanical complications and wear to antagonists with short-term clinical observation. SM thin specimens ≤1.5 mm showed statistically significant higher flexural strength than AM zirconia (p ≤ 0.01), while thicker specimens showed comparable outcomes (p > 0.5). The fracture resistance of dental restorations was dependent on the aging protocol, restoration type, and thickness. The bond strength of veneering ceramic to zirconia core was comparable.

CONCLUSIONS

The results pooled from two short-term clinical trials showed no signs of mechanical or biological complications of additively manufactured 3Y-TZP zirconia crowns. The flexural strength might depend on the specimens' thickness, but it showed promising results to be used in clinical applications, taking into account the printing technique and orientation, material composition (yttria content), solid loading, and sintering parameters. 3D-printed restorations fracture resistance improved when adhered to human teeth. The veneering ceramic bond was comparable to milled zirconia specimens. Long-term RCTs are recommended to confirm the mechanical behavior of 3D-printed restorations.

Flexural Strength of Two Multilayered and Monochromatic High Yttria Containing Zirconia Materials Following Different Sintering Parameters

OBJECTIVES

 Sintering parameters influence the properties of zirconia. This study examined the effect of altering sintering temperature and time of monochrome and multilayer 5 mol% yttria-partially stabilized zirconia (5Y-PSZ) on flexural strength.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

 Three hundred specimens (width × length × thickness = 10 × 20 × 2 mm) were prepared from monolayer (ZX) and multilayer (ZM) 5Y-PSZ and randomly sintered at decreasing (TD: 1,450°C), regular (TR: 1,500°C), and increasing (TI: 1,550°C) sintering temperature, with extremely short (HE: 10 minutes), ultrashort (HU: 15 minutes), short (HS: 30 minutes), and regular (HR: 135 minutes) sintering time (n = 15/group). The precrack was induced on the tension side before testing for flexural strength (σ).

STATISTICAL ANALYSIS

 Analysis of variance and Tukey's test were used for significant differences of σ at p < 0.05. The microstructure and crystalline (monoclinic; m, tetragonal; t, cubic; c) phase were evaluated by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD).

RESULTS

 ZXTIHS indicated the highest σ for ZX (315.81 ± 18.91 MPa), whereas ZMTIHS indicated the highest σ for ZM (335.21 ± 36.18 MPa). There was no significant difference for σ between ZX and ZM (p > 0.05). Sintering zirconia at TI or HR indicated significantly higher σ than sintering at TD or TR or with HS, HE, or HU for both ZX and ZM (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference for σ between TRHR and TIHS, TIHU, and TIHE (p > 0.05). SEM indicated intergranular and transgranular fractures. XRD revealed predominately c- and t-phases and minor amounts of m-phase.

CONCLUSION

 Increasing sintered temperature with decreasing time offers acceptable strength to regular sintering. Raising sintering temperature with decreasing time is suggested to facilitate chairside restorative reconstruction.

Translucency of recent zirconia materials and material-related variables affecting their translucency: a systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Recent forms of translucent zirconia material have been developed, offering a wide range of options and varieties for enhancing aesthetics, making it a preferred choice in the field of prosthetic dentistry. However, there is insufficient understanding regarding the recent types of zirconia materials and their optical behavior. Understanding the variables that influence the translucency of zirconia and identifying strategies to enhance its esthetics are crucial.

PURPOSE

The current systemic review highlights a comprehensive understanding of different zirconia generations in relation to their optical characteristics and evaluates material-related variables affecting their translucency.

METHODS

The present review studied in-vitro studies that evaluated the optical characteristics of different yttria content of yttria stabilized materials. The topics explored were: (1) the different zirconia material generations and their optical behavior; (2) material-related factors that affect their translucency. The research was restricted to online publication in the English language from July 1, 2010, to July 31, 2023, using PubMed, Scopus, and Science Direct resources. The search key terms and their combinations were "zirconia," "translucent zirconia," "cubic zirconia," "highly translucent zirconia," "yttria partially stabilized zirconia," "monolithic zirconia," "translucency," "optical properties," and "light transmission."

RESULTS

The data obtained from fifty-three studies addressed the optical characteristics of various zirconia generations. They reported that changing yttria content had a significant impact on translucency. Different kinds of zirconia ceramics of the same generation have varying translucencies. Achieving optimum aesthetics with monolithic zirconia is challenging due to factors related to material aspects such as the presence of additives, point defects, microstructure, thickness, phase distribution, and sintering conditions.

CONCLUSIONS

Newly developed monolithic dental zirconia ceramics have improved aesthetics and translucency. However, additional research is necessary to evaluate their performance and long-term durability.

Dental zirconia microwave-sintering followed by rapid cooling protocol

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of microwave sintering temperature and cooling rate (MS) on 3Y-TZP ceramics and its influence on the ceramic microstructure and mechanical properties. Specifically, to optimize the sintering process, reducing the total sintering time compared to conventional sintering.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Eighty-four pre-sintered Y-TZP discs (Vipi block Zirconn, VIPI) (ISO 6872) were divided into seven groups (n = 12) according to the sintering conditions: conventional sintering (CS) at 1530 °C for 120 min and microwave sintering at 1400 °C (MS1400) and 1450 °C (MS1450) for 15 min followed by different cooling conditions: rapid cooling (RC), cooling at 400 °C (C400) and 25 °C (C25). The specimens were submitted to apparent density measurements, X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, and biaxial flexural strength test. Data was statistically analyzed through two-way ANOVA, Tukey, Sidak, Dunnett and Weibull (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

All MS1400 groups presented lower density values than the CS and MS1450 groups. Two-way ANOVA revealed that the MS temperature and cooling rate affected the biaxial flexural strength of the Y-TZP (p < 0.01). Group MS1400RC presented lower biaxial flexural strength values (681.9 MPa) than MS1450RC (824.7 MPa). The cooling rate did not statistically decrease the biaxial strength among the groups submitted to microwave sintering at 1450 °C. XRD analysis showed that the sintering and cooling temperature did not induce tetragonal to monoclinic phase transformation.

CONCLUSIONS

Microwave sintering at 1450 °C for 15 min followed by rapid cooling can be a viable fast alternative protocol for Y-TZP sintering, compared with the conventional sintering, reducing the total sintering time by 75% and reducing the energy used for the sintering process without affecting the Y-TZP biaxial flexural strength and relative density compared to the conventional sintering. Moreover, the microwave technique promoted smaller grains and did not induce monoclinic phase formation.

Effect of printing layer orientation and polishing on the fatigue strength of 3D-printed dental zirconia

OBJECTIVE

The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of surface polishing and printing layer orientation on the fatigue behaviour of 3 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia (3Y-TZP) by stereolithography (SLA) in comparison with subtractive manufacturing.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

60 experimental zirconia bar-shaped specimens were 3D-printed (P) via SLA, and 30 specimens were milled (M) from commercial zirconia block (Lava™ Frame, 3 M ESPE AG). All specimens had the same dimensions (1 mm × 1 mm x 12 mm) after sintering. The 3D-printed specimens were randomly divided according to printing orientations: parallel or perpendicular to the tensile surface in the fatigue test. The specimens were subsequently submitted to two surface finishing protocols (n = 15/gr): unpolished or polished. Their phase compositions were analysed by X-ray diffraction. The fatigue behaviour was evaluated by a stepwise approach.

RESULTS

The milled and both 3D-printed groups showed similar phase compositions for the as-sintered condition. Considerable amounts of rhombohedral phase were detected after polishing. Milled unpolished samples presented significantly higher fatigue strength than 3D-printed unpolished samples. Polishing did not improve the fatigue strength for milled zirconia but was advantageous for the 3D-printed specimens. 3D-printed specimens with parallel printing-layer orientation were significantly stronger than specimens with perpendicular layers regardless of surface finishing.

CONCLUSION

The manufacturing techniques had a significant influence on the fatigue strength of 3Y-TZP, but not on the phase compositions of the surface. The polishing protocol showed different effects on 3Y-TZP fatigue strength and induced phase transition of the 3Y-TZP from Tetragonal to Rhombohedral. The best fatigue strength was achieved through milling using an unpolished surface and SLA-printed layers that were parallel to the tensile surface, followed by polishing.

How could mouthwashes affect the color stability and translucency of various types of monolithic zirconia? An in-vitro study

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to evaluate the color stability and translucency of various types of monolithic zirconia after immersion in chlorhexidine and Listerine mouthwashes.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This experimental study was performed on 36 disk-shaped specimens fabricated from low-translucent, high-translucent, and multilayered monolithic zirconia (n = 12 per group). Each group was equally divided and immersed in either 2% chlorhexidine (CHX) or Listerine mouthwash for 2 min daily over 7 days. Changes in color (ΔE) and the translucency parameter (ΔTP) were evaluated and compared. The data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's post-hoc tests (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

Chlorhexidine caused a significantly lower ΔE and a significantly higher ΔTP in multilayered zirconia compared to the low-translucency (ΔE: P = 0.0027, ΔTP: P<0.001) and the high-translucency zirconia group (ΔE: P<0.001, ΔTP: P = 0.022). Listerine caused a significantly higher ΔE in the high-translucency zirconia group compared to the multilayered zirconia group (P = 0.0165). It also resulted in a significantly higher mean ΔTP in the multilayered zirconia group compared to the low-translucency (P = 0.0003) and high-translucency zirconia groups (P = 0.019).

CONCLUSIONS

In both mouthwashes, multilayered monolithic zirconia exhibited the highest color stability among the tested materials; albeit with the most pronounced changes in translucency. Meanwhile, high-translucency monolithic zirconia was more prone to discoloration when exposed to both mouthwashes.

Does speed-sintering affect the optical and mechanical properties of yttria-stabilized zirconia? A systematic review and meta-analysis of in-vitro studies

Zirconia restorations are increasingly popular in dental treatment. Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) needs to be sintered for clinical applications and novel speed-sintering protocols are being developed for chairside treatments. Whether the properties of speed-sintered YSZ meet clinical requirements, however, remains unclear. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on the influence of speed-sintering on the optical and mechanical properties of dental YSZ according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines. A literature search was conducted using PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases for relevant articles published between January 1, 2010 and February 28, 2022 in English, Chinese, or Japanese. After full-text evaluation and quality assessment, 26 articles were selected. Meta-analysis revealed that speed-sintering does not significantly affect the CIEDE2000-based translucency parameter, contrast ratio, three-point flexural strength, biaxial flexural strength, or fracture toughness of YSZ (p < 0.01) compared to conventional sintering. However, the CIELab-based translucency parameter of conventionally sintered YSZ is higher than that of speed-sintered YSZ. The descriptive analysis indicated that speed-sintering does not affect the hardness of YSZ compared to that of conventionally sintered YSZ. The results indicate that speed-sintering is suitable for preparing YSZ for dental restorations.

Effect of different sintering protocols on the fracture strength of 3-unit monolithic gradient zirconia fixed partial dentures: An in vitro study

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Strength-gradient zirconia combining 3 zirconia formulations with different flexural strengths has been reported to have outstanding mechanical properties. However, data concerning the effect of different sintering protocols on the fracture strength of 3-unit monolithic gradient zirconia fixed partial dentures (FPDs) are sparse.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to test the effect of different sintering protocols on the fracture strength of 3-unit monolithic gradient zirconia FPDs.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Two custom-made stainless-steel master dies were designed to replicate a mandibular right second premolar and second molar prepared to receive a 3-unit monolithic zirconia FPD. Thirty monolithic zirconia FPDs were milled from gradient zirconia blanks and allocated to 3 groups (n=10) according to the sintering protocols: high-speed sintering, speed sintering, and conventional sintering. The FPDs were cemented onto the corresponding dies with traditional glass ionomer cement. All FPDs were cyclic loaded (600 000 cycles/49 N/1.7 Hz) in a mastication simulator. Fracture load measurements for each FPD were determined by using a universal testing machine. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) at ×80 magnification was used to examine a fractured FPD from each group. A representative specimen from each group was examined with SEM at ×30 000 magnification to determine the grain size. One-way ANOVA, pair-wise Tukey honestly significant difference (HSD), and Pearson correlation tests were used for statistical analysis of the data (α=.05).

RESULTS

The high-speed sintered FPDs recorded the highest statistically significant fracture load mean ±standard deviation value (2526 ±300 N), followed by the speed sintered FPDs (2136 ±127 N), while the lowest statistically significant fracture load mean value was recorded with the conventionally sintered FPDs (1361 ±181 N) (P<.001). In addition, the mean ±standard deviation grain size values were 488 ±272 nm for the high-speed sintered specimen, 578 ±409 nm for the speed sintered specimen, and 832 ±551 nm for the conventionally sintered specimen (P<.001). A significant negative correlation was found between fracture strength and grain size among the 3 groups.

CONCLUSIONS

The fracture strength of 3-unit monolithic gradient zirconia FPDs sintered by using a high-speed protocol was significantly higher than that of speed and conventionally sintered FPDs (P<.001). The high-speed sintering protocol reduced the mean grain size of gradient zirconia FPDs compared with that of both speed and conventional sintering protocols.

Effect of sintering time on microstructure and optical properties of yttria-partially stabilized monolithic zirconia

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the impact of speed sintering on the microstructure and optical properties of 3 and 5 mol% yttria-partially stabilized monolithic zirconias.

METHODS

120 plate-shaped zirconia specimens (10x10x 0.4 mm) were prepared from three commercial 5 mol% yttria-partially stabilized zirconia blocks (5Y-PSZs); Katana UTML (Kuraray Noritake), Cercon xtML (Dentsply Sirona), and Zolid FX white (Amann Girrbach), and two commercial 3 mol% yttria-partially stabilized zirconia blocks (3Y-PSZs); Lava Plus (3 M ESPE) and InCoris (Sirona, GmbH). Specimens were either conventional sintered (CS) using a 7-hour program or speed sintered (SS) using a quick 90-minute program. The microstructure was inspected with a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and phase fractions were detected using x-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). Translucency (TP00), and contrast ratio (CR) were obtained using a spectrophotometer (VITA Easyshade V). Color difference (ΔE00) between both sintering processes was calculated with the CIEDE2000 formula. ΔE00 up to 1.8 was set as the acceptability threshold. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA, Krusakll-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney U tests. (n = 12, α = .05).

RESULTS

Grain size was significantly decreased after SS for all tested materials (P < .0001). The average grain sizes of 5Y-PSZs were significantly larger than those of 3Y-PSZs. The atomic structure, microstructure, and transparency of CS and SS were all affected by the amount of yttria, the size of the crystals, and tetragonality. SS significantly reduced TP00 (F = 7135.95, P < 0.0001) and increased CR (F = 453.21, P < 0.0001). The CS Katana presented the highest TP00 and lowest CR value. ΔE00 between the CS and SS groups were clinically acceptable except for Lava, which had values above the set threshold (1.89).

SIGNIFICANCE

SS altered the grain size and internal structure of the tested materials, which was reflected in translucency.

Effect of sintering speed, aging processes, and different surface treatments on the optical and surface properties of monolithic zirconia restorations

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Advances in dentistry have led to more esthetic and biocompatible restorative materials such as translucent zirconia and to faster and more accurate manufacturing methods. How changes in the surface and optical properties of translucent zirconia affect the esthetics and durability of these restorations under different conditions and manufacturing processes is unclear.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of the sintering speed, aging process, and different surface treatments on the translucency and surface structure of monolithic zirconia restorations.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Prepared typodont teeth were scanned, and 40 three-unit fixed partial dentures (FPDs) and 40 disk specimens were designed and prepared from monolithic zirconia blanks. The specimens were divided into traditional or speed sintering groups (20 FPDs and 20 disks each); half of each group (10 FPDs and 10 disks) was polished with a handpiece at 10 000 rpm, and the other half was glazed. Half of the specimens were thermocycled with 3500 cycles in 5 °C and 55 °C water baths, and the remaining half were not thermocycled. Translucency was measured with a spectrophotometer. Surface free energy was calculated in mNm with a contact angle device; surface roughness was measured in nm with an atomic force microscope. Translucency data were analyzed by the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests, while surface free energy and surface roughness data were analyzed by 3-way ANOVA (α=.05).

RESULTS

The highest transmittance was in the speed sintered, polished, nonthermocycled group, and the lowest transmittance was in the speed sintered, polished, thermocycled group (P=.029). The transmittance of the traditionally sintered, polished, nonthermocycled group was significantly higher than that in all the speed sintered, glazed groups; the traditionally sintered, glazed groups; and the traditionally sintered, polished, thermocycled group (P=.029). The transmittance of the traditionally sintered, polished, thermocycled group was significantly higher than that of all traditionally sintered, glazed groups (P=.029). The mean surface free energy in the traditionally sintered groups was higher than that in the speed sintered groups (P=.002); also, it was higher in the glazed groups than in the polished groups (P<.001). The aging process decreased surface free energy (P=.023). The mean surface roughness in the speed sintered groups was significantly lower than that in the traditionally sintered groups (P=.004). No significant difference in surface roughness was found between the polished and glazed groups and between the 2 variables of the aging process (P>.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Speed sintering and polishing may decrease the surface free energy and increase the translucency of the monolithic zirconia restoration. Also, speed sintering creates a smoother surface. Aging had a more significant effect on decreasing the surface free energy of the specimens and could make the least translucent restorations.

Research progress of biomimetic materials in oral medicine

Biomimetic materials are able to mimic the structure and functional properties of native tissues especially natural oral tissues. They have attracted growing attention for their potential to achieve configurable and functional reconstruction in oral medicine. Though tremendous progress has been made regarding biomimetic materials, significant challenges still remain in terms of controversy on the mechanism of tooth tissue regeneration, lack of options for manufacturing such materials and insufficiency of in vivo experimental tests in related fields. In this review, the biomimetic materials used in oral medicine are summarized systematically, including tooth defect, tooth loss, periodontal diseases and maxillofacial bone defect. Various theoretical foundations of biomimetic materials research are reviewed, introducing the current and pertinent results. The benefits and limitations of these materials are summed up at the same time. Finally, challenges and potential of this field are discussed. This review provides the framework and support for further research in addition to giving a generally novel and fundamental basis for the utilization of biomimetic materials in the future.

Microstructural and mechanical behaviours of Y-TZP prepared via slip-casting and fused deposition modelling (FDM)

This paper reports the microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of yttria-stabilized zirconia prepared via fused deposition modelling and slip casting. X-Ray Diffraction peaks indicated that yttria-stabilized zirconia crystallized in tetragonal structure for both slip casted(SC) and fused deposition modelled(FDM) samples. Further, scanning electron microscopy of slip casted sample showcased closely packed structure with fine grains and an average grain size of ∼65 nm whilst fused deposition modelled samples showcased non-homogeneous pores with ∼20 nm grain size. Average relative density of slip casted samples was ∼99.4 % while that of fused deposition modelled sample exhibited ∼96.2 %. The Vickers Hardness of slip casted (∼15.26 ± 0.4 GPa) was ∼10 % higher than the fused deposition modelled samples (∼13.79 ± 0.3 GPa). Likewise, indentation fracture toughness of slip casted (5.78 ± 0.5 MPa m1/2) was 14 % higher than fused deposition modelled samples which could have been due to the change in grain size as well as porosity of the ceramics. Compressive strength of the fused deposition modelled samples was 32 % less than slip casted samples (∼510 ± 10 MPa) due to its non-homogenous pores which led to weakening van der Waals force of attraction.

Impact of high-speed sintering and choice of preshaded monochrome or multilayered blanks on fatigue behavior of 4 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

High-speed sintering allows the rapid fabrication of esthetic restorations with adequate flexural strength. However, data on the fatigue behavior of high-speed sintered 4 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (4Y-TZP) are lacking.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to examine the effect of high-speed sintering and the preshading of blanks (monochrome versus multilayer) on the fatigue behavior of 4Y-TZP ceramics.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Four-point flexural strength specimens (N=405) were fabricated from high-speed sintered multilayer 4Y-TZP (Zolid DRS) processed at 1580 °C for about 20 minutes and conventionally sintered at 1450 °C for about 10 hours, multilayer 4Y-TZP (Zolid Gen-x), and monochrome 4Y-TZP (Ceramill Zolid HT+PS), the control group. The specimens were loaded under 5 different dynamic test conditions for fatigue testing (P1-P5). Three were step-stress protocols (P1: 50 N for 5000 cycles; P2: 10 N for 1000 cycles, P3: 5% for 5000 cycles), 1 was tested with a constant force of 720 N (P4), and 1 was tested for different constant load levels (P5). For analysis of P1-P3, the Kaplan-Meier test and Mantel Cox test were performed (α=.05). P4 was analyzed with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney U tests, and P5 by creating a load-cycle diagram. A fracture analysis was performed.

RESULTS

ZMLC showed better fatigue behavior than ZMLH (P≤.006) and ZMOC (P≤.002) in all 3 step-stress protocols (P1-P3). ZMLH showed results comparable with those for ZMOC (P≥.285). In P4 and P5, all materials showed comparable values (P=.163 for P4).

CONCLUSIONS

The multilayer technique showed a positive effect on the fatigue behavior of 4Y-TZP. In contrast, high-speed sintering negatively influenced the fatigue behavior of multilayer 4Y-TZP. The high-speed sintered material showed no deterioration compared with the conventional sintered monochrome material.

Effect of High-Speed Sintering on the Optical Properties, Microstructure, and Phase Distribution of Multilayered Zirconia Stabilized with 5 mol% Yttria

As dental 5 mol% yttria-stabilized (5Y-) zirconia demand high esthetics, it is necessary to clarify how the optical properties are affected by high-speed sintering, which is not yet fully understood. Our study aimed to investigate the effect of high-speed sintering on the translucency and opalescence parameters (TP and OP, respectively), as well as their related microstructure and phase distribution, using two types of multilayered 5Y-zirconia. Multilayered 5Y-zirconia (Cercon xt ML, Lava Esthetic) were cut layer-by-layer, followed by conventional and high-speed sintering. The TP and OP values were subsequently obtained using a spectrophotometer, and field emission scanning electron microscopy images were used to analyze the average grain size. The phase fractions were analyzed using X-ray diffraction. Regardless of the zirconia type, the TP was slightly lowered by high-speed sintering in all the layers except the dentin layer (DL) for Lava Esthetic (p < 0.05). The OP decreased by high-speed sintering in the DL for Cercon xt ML and in all the layers for Lava Esthetic (p < 0.05). The decrease in translucency after high-speed sintering was attributed to a decrease in the yttria-rich t'-phase with low tetragonality, along with an increase in the yttria-lean t-phase with high tetragonality.

Effect of superspeed sintering on translucency, opalescence, microstructure, and phase fraction of multilayered 4 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal and 6 mol% yttria-stabilized partially stabilized zirconia ceramics

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The optical properties of recently developed multilayer zirconia have mainly been studied for the effects of conventional sintering and speed sintering but not as much for the effect of superspeed sintering. As superspeed sintering protocols typically require a higher sintering temperature and higher heating and cooling rates than speed- and conventional sintering protocols, the optical properties of superspeed sintered zirconia may be affected differently.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of superspeed sintering on the optical properties, microstructure, and phase fraction of multilayered 4 mol% yttria-stabilized (4Y-) and 6 mol% yttria-stabilized (6Y-) zirconia.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Multilayered 4Y- and 6Y-zirconia were sectioned. After conventional and superspeed sintering, the translucency parameter (TP), and opalescence parameter (OP) were measured with a spectrophotometer (n=10). To obtain the grain sizes from the field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) images for each layer (n=2), more than 500 (6Y-zirconia) and 800 grains (4Y-zirconia) were measured by linear intercept methods. The phase fractions were obtained through X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis by using the Rietveld method (n=1). The results were analyzed by 3-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey honest significant difference tests (TP and OP) and by 3-way ANOVA and post hoc Scheffé tests (grain size) (α=.05).

RESULTS

No layers exhibited a significant difference in TP after superspeed sintering, except the dentin layer (DL) and transition layer 2 (T2) of 4Y- and 6Y-zirconia, respectively. The TP increased (P<.05) in DL for superspeed sintered 4Y-zirconia and decreased (P<.05) in T2 for the superspeed sintered 6Y-zirconia. However, the difference in TP by superspeed sintering was lower than the perceptibility thresholds of 50:50%. The OP decreased (P<.05) in the DL and T2 of 4Y-zirconia after superspeed sintering. For 6Y-zirconia, the OP decreased (P<.05) in all layers except for the transition layer 1 (T1) after superspeed sintering. However, the difference in OP values was minimal, with only a 1.1 difference observed for Zolid Gen-X (4Y) and a range of 1.22 to 1.62 for Katana UTML (6Y) when using superspeed sintering. No significant change was found in the grain size after superspeed sintering of either zirconia. Regardless of the sintering speed, the average grain size of the 6Y-zirconia (conventional: 2.09 to 2.21 μm; superspeed: 2.11 to 2.20 μm) was larger than that of the 4Y-zirconia (conventional: 0.50 to 0.52 μm; superspeed: 0.52 to 0.54 μm). Owing to superspeed sintering, the metastable tetragonal (T') phase content increased while the tetragonal (T) phase decreased in 4Y-zirconia; in 6Y-zirconia, the cubic (C) phase content increased, while the T'-phase content decreased.

CONCLUSIONS

Superspeed sintering did not result in any clinically significant changes in the translucency and opalescence of 4Y- or 6Y-zirconia.

Development of Y-TZP/MWCNT-SiO2 nanocomposite for dental protheses

Y-TZP/MWCNT-SiO2 nanocomposite was synthesized by co-precipitation and hydrothermal treatment methods. After the characterization of the MWCNT-SiO2 powder, specimens were obtained from the synthesized material Y-TZP/MWCNT-SiO2 by uniaxial pressing for a second characterization and later comparison of its optical and mechanical properties with the conventional Y-TZP. The MWCNT-SiO2 was presented in bundles of carbon nanotubes coated by silica (mean length: 5.10 ± 1.34 μm /D90: 6.9 μm). The composite manufactured was opaque (contrast ratio: 0.9929 ± 0.0012) and had a white color with a slightly difference from the conventional Y-TZP (ΔE00: 4.4 ± 2.2) color. The mechanical properties of Y-TZP/MWCNT-SiO2: vickers hardness (10.14 ± 1.27 GPa; p = 0.25) and fracture toughness (4.98 ± 0.30 MPa m1/2; p = 0.39), showed no significant difference from the conventional Y-TZP (hardness: 8.87 ± 0.89; fracture toughness: 4.98 ± 0.30 MPa m1/2). However, for flexural strength (p = 0.003), a lower value was obtained for Y-TZP/MWCNT-SiO2 (299.4 ± 30.5 MPa) when compared to the control Y-TZP (623.7 ± 108.8 MPa). The manufactured Y-TZP/MWCNT-SiO2 composite presented satisfactory optical properties, however the co-precipitation and hydrothermal treatment methods need to be optimized to avoid the formation of porosities and strong agglomerates, both from Y-TZP particles and MWCNT-SiO2 bundles, which lead to a significant decrease in the material flexural strength.

Transient thermal stresses developed during speed sintering of 3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals

OBJECTIVES

To investigate transient thermal stresses that developed in 3Y-TZP green compacts during speed sintering.

METHODS

A total of 312 disc-shaped green compacts (Ø17.1 ×1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3 mm) were cold-isostatically pressed from 3Y-TZP powder (Zpex, Tosoh Corp.) for speed sintering studies as well as compositional analysis and biaxial flexural strength measurements (both at room temperature and following heating at 90 °C/min to 500 °C). Flexural strength was determined using the piston-on-3-ball method. Phase assemblies were analyzed using the X-ray diffraction method. Effects of heating/cooling rates on transient stresses were investigated by conducting definitive sintering studies to determine the threshold for fracture. Finite element analysis (FEA) was used to validate the experimental findings using measured thermomechanical properties.

RESULTS

The bulk and relative density of the green compact were 2.95 ± 0.03 g/cm3 and 48.52% ± 0.45%. The flexural strength was drastically decreased from 10.3 ± 0.4 MPa to 1.09 ± 0.07 MPa following heating at 90 °C/min to 500 °C. The monoclinic and tetragonal contents were 54.9% and 45.1%, respectively. The threshold for fracture was located at 500 °C during the first heating stage with a 90 °C/min heating rate in specimens of 2.5 mm thickness or greater. No fractures occurred in the second heating stage and cooling phase. The FEA estimated that the principal transient tensile stress was ∼1.14 MPa at 500 °C during the heating phase, which exceeded the corresponding flexural strength (1.09 ± 0.07 MPa).

SIGNIFICANCE

Advanced FEA methods are an accurate and efficient tool to analyze the history of transient stresses during sintering of ceramic dental restorations.

The effects of heating rate and sintering time on the biaxial flexural strength of monolithic zirconia ceramics

The strength of zirconia ceramic materials used in restorations is dependent upon sintering. Varying sintering protocols may affect the biaxial flexural strength of zirconia materials. This in vitro study was conducted to investigate the effects of sintering parameters on the biaxial flexural strength of monolithic zirconia. Two different monoblock zirconia ceramics were used. Following coloration, samples of both types of ceramics were divided into groups according to whether or not biaxial flexural strength testing was performed directly after sintering or following thermocycling. Biaxial flexural strength data was analysed with a Shapiro Wilk normality test, followed by 1-way ANOVA, Tukey post hoc tests for inter-group comparisons, and paired samples t-tests for intra-group comparisons. A significant difference was found between the biaxial flexural strengths of Zircon X and Upcera ceramics before thermocycling (p<0.05). In both Zircon X and Upcera ceramic groups, the thermocycling process created a significant difference in the biaxial flexural strength values of the ceramic samples in Group 6 (p<0.05) which had the slowest heating rate and longest holding time. The zirconia ceramics have higher BFS at higher heating rates either before or after thermocycling. The holding time has significant effects on thermocycling and flexural strength. The zirconia achieved its optimum strength when it sintered at longer time regardless of heating rates.

Aging resistance of highly translucent zirconia ceramics with rapid sintering

PURPOSE

Rapid sintering technology has become one of the most direct methods for shortening the manufacturing time of zirconia restorations. This study aimed to explore the aging resistance of rapid-sintered 5 mol% yttria-partially-stabilized zirconia (5Y-PSZ).

METHODS

Specimens were made from two types of 5Y-PSZ material and subjected to rapid sintering (RS) and conventional sintering (CS). After in vitro aging for 5 h, morphology observation, grain size measurement, and phase composition analysis were performed. The mechanical properties were evaluated by biaxial, three-point flexural tests, and the Vickers microhardness test. Results were analyzed by 3-way ANOVA.

RESULTS

Both the RS group and the CS group had a dense microstructure. The tested zirconia ceramics had different grain sizes, which were affected by the interaction between the sintering method and aging. Both groups revealed the same characteristic peaks of the cubic phase after aging. Regardless of the sintering method used, there was no significant difference in the mechanical properties of the tested zirconia before and after aging.

CONCLUSION

The rapid-sintered 5Y-PSZ materials had a microstructure, phase composition and mechanical properties similar to those of conventional sintered materials. The characteristics of the materials prepared using the two sintering methods did not change significantly after aging.

Mechanical Properties of Translucent Zirconia: An In Vitro Study

Background: The introduction of translucent zirconia has improved mimetics: nevertheless, a reduction in the mechanical performance was registered. The study aim was to investigate the mechanical characteristics of a high-translucent zirconia used for monolithic restorations before and after the aging process compared to a low-translucent zirconia. Methods: A total of 23 specimens were used in the present study. Group A (n = 10) was made of a high-translucent Y-TZP; group B (n = 7) was made of a low-translucent Y-TZP and finally group C (n = 6) was an aged high-translucent Y-TZP. Flexural strength, fracture toughness, brittleness, microcrack’s propagation and grain size were analyzed. Results: The Vickers hardness was: 1483 ± 187 MPa (group C); 1102 ± 392 MPa (group A); 1284 ± 32 MPa (group B). The flexural strength was: 440 (±96.2) MPa (group C); 427 (±59.5) MPa (group A); 805 (±198.4) MPa (group B). The fracture toughness was: 5.1 (±0.7) MPa.m1/2 (group C); 4.9 (±0.9) MPa.m1/2 (group A); 8.9 (±1.1) MPa.m1/2 (group B). The brittleness was: 295 (±42.8) (group C), 230.9 (±46.4) (group A) and 144.9 (±20.3) (group B). The grain size was: 2.75 (±1.2) µm2 (group A); 0.16 (±0.05) µm2 (group B); 3.04 (±1.1) µm2 (group C). Conclusions: The significant reduction in the mechanical properties of high-translucent zirconia, compared to the traditional one, suggests their use in the anterior/lateral area (up to premolars).

Effect of speed sintering of monolithic zirconia with different yttria contents on color and crystal phase

This study evaluated the color and microstructure of monolithic zirconia crowns with different yttrium oxide (Y₂ O₃ ) contents treated by conventional or speed sintering. Four types of zirconia ceramics were assessed: two monolayer zirconia, and two multilayer zirconia. The monolithic zirconia crowns were fabricated using a dental computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) system and in two shades (A2 and BL). After milling, the zirconia crowns were sintered using either speed sintering or conventional sintering. For each combination of zirconia (4), shade (2), and sintering condition (2), the color parameters were determined at three positions of each of nine crowns using a non-contact dental spectrophotometer. In addition, the zirconia phases in the specimens were quantified using X-ray diffractometry. Significant differences in the ΔE₀₀ values at different measurement positions were observed for the Multi2 crown of the BL shade group. The color difference resulting from conventional and speed sintering programs was not affected by the difference in yttria content of Mono1, Mono2, and Multi1. However, in Multi2, containing 3Y-TZP and 5Y-PSZ, a color change was caused by the use of speed sintering. Therefore, when performing speed sintering with Multi2, it is necessary to select the color in consideration of these results or take measures for staining.

Effect of sintering time on the marginal and internal fit of monolithic zirconia crowns containing 3–4 mol% Y2O3

Background

Short-term sintering may offer advantages including saving time and energy but there is limited evidence on the effect that altering sintering time has on the accuracy of monolithic zirconia crowns. The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of shortened sintering time on the marginal and internal fit of 3Y-TZP and 4Y-TZP monolithic crowns.

Methods

Sixty monolithic zirconia crowns were fabricated for the maxillary first molar tooth on the prefabricated implant abutment. Groups were created according to the material composition: 3Y-TZP Generation 1, 3Y-TZP Generation 2 and 4Y-TZP. Two different sintering protocols were performed: same final sintering temperature (1500 °C) and various rates of heating (10 °C/min and 40 °C/min), cooling down speed (− 10 °C/min and − 40 °C/min), holding time (45 and 120 minutes), and total sintering time (approximately 2 and 7 hours, respectively). The marginal and internal fit of the crowns were determined using the silicone replica technique. Comparisons between groups were analyzed using two-way ANOVA. Pairwise multiple comparisons were performed using t-test (p < 0.05).

Results

The mean marginal gap values of 4Y-TZP zirconia revealed statistically significant increase for the short-term sintering protocol (p < 0.0001), while no difference was observed between the sintering protocols for the mean marginal gap values of 3Y-TZP groups. Although all groups showed clinically acceptable gap values, altering the sintering time had an effect on marginal fit of the crowns manufactured from 4Y-TZP zirconia.

Conclusions

Shortening the sintering time may lead to differences within clinically acceptable limits. The manufacturer’s recommendations according to material composition should be implemented with care.

Effect of sintering temperature on translucency parameter of zirconia blocks

BACKGROUND

The main drawbacks of zirconia are its high refractive index and opacity. This study aimed to assess the effect of sintering temperature on the translucency of Ivoclar e. max ZirCAD (IEZ), and White Peaks Symphony (WPS) zirconia blocks.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

In this in vitro experimental study, 30 IEZ and 30 WPS zirconia blocks measuring 10 mm × 10 mm × 1 mm were prepared and underwent sintering in three subgroups at 1440°C, 1500°C, and 1530°C. The specimens were then photographed against a black and a white background with a standard digital camera. The L*, a*, and b* color parameters were measured using Adobe Photoshop software, and translucency was calculated. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (P < 0.05).

RESULTS

In both the IEZ and WPS groups, the maximum and minimum translucency parameters were recorded in 1530°C and 1440°C subgroups, respectively. The difference in the mean translucency was significant among the three subgroups of each zirconia group (P < 0.001). The mean translucency of WPS zirconia was significantly higher than that of IEZ zirconia (P < 0.01), and maximum difference was noted at 1500°C sintering temperature.

CONCLUSION

Increasing the sintering temperature from 1440°C to 1530°C can significantly increase the translucency of IEZ and WPS zirconia blocks, and can be considered to improve the quality of zirconia restorations.

Effect of Sintering Temperature on Flexural Strength of Two Types of Zirconia

Objectives: Any change in the sintering process can directly affect the micro-structure and properties of zirconia. This study sought to assess the effect of sintering temperature on flexural strength of IPS e.max ZirCAD MO Ivoclar (EZI) and CopraSmile White Peaks Symphony (WPS) zirconia blocks. Materials and Methods: In this in vitro, experimental study, 30 EZI and 30 WPS zirconia blocks measuring 10 x 10 x 1 mm were milled and sintered at 1440, 1500 and 1530°C in three subgroups. The flexural strength of the specimens was measured by a testing machine with piston-on-3-ball method according to ISO2015. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA. Results: The mean flexural strength was 1.31±0.49, 1.09±0.24 and 1.29±0.48 MPa in 1440, 1500, and 1530°C subgroups of EZI, and 1.44±0.61, 1.18±0.35, and 1.33±0.54 MPa in 1440, 1500, and 1530°C subgroups of WPS zirconia, respectively. Two-way ANOVA revealed that the effects of zirconia type (P=0.484), temperature (P=0.258) and their interaction (P=0.957) on flexural strength were not significant. Conclusion: Increasing the sintering temperature from 1440°C to 1530°C did not increase the flexural strength of EZI or WPS zirconia.

Influence of Sintering Temperature on the Marginal Fit and Compressive Strength of Monolithic Zirconia Crowns

Statement of the Problem

Increasing the sintering temperature is suggested by some manufacturers as a way to enhance the translucency of monolithic zirconia crowns. Meanwhile, its effect on the marginal fit and compressive strength of the restoration is not fully understood.

Purpose

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of sintering temperature on the marginal fit and compressive strength of monolithic zirconia crowns.

Materials and Method

In this in vitro study, thirty crowns of pre-sintered monolithic zirconia were milled and sintered in a special furnace at either 1450°C or 1550°C (n=15 per group). The marginal gaps were measured at 18 spots on the dies with a digital microscope. To evaluate the compressive strength, the specimens were cemented on brass dies by using conventional glass ionomer cement. Vertical load was applied by a universal testing machine until fracture. One-way ANOVA test was used to analyze the results (α=0.05).

Results

The marginal gap was not significantly different between the two groups (p= 0.062). A significantly higher mean value of compressive strength was observed in crowns sintered at 1550°c (1988.27±635.09 N) than those sintered at 1450 °c (1514.27±455.11 N) (p= 0.026).

Conclusion

Although increasing the sintering temperature would not affect the marginal gap of monolithic zirconia crowns, it could significantly improve the compressive strength of zirconia restorations.

The Effect of Yttria Content on Microstructure, Strength, and Fracture Behavior of Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia

Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) is well-known as a material with perfect mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. It is used for manufacturing various high-temperature components for aerospace and energy generation, as well as wear- and corrosion-resistant devices in medicine. This work investigated the effect of a Y2O3 addition to ZrO2 on the microstructure and mechanical properties of YSZ ceramics produced by one sintering schedule. ZrO2 ceramics doped with 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 mol% Y2O3 (designated 3YSZ through to 8YSZ) were prepared by using conventional sintering at 1550 °C for 2 h in argon. The effect of yttria content was analyzed with respect to grain size, morphology of the microstructural features, phase composition, parameters of fracture surface, and flexural strength. The 7YSZ ceramics sintered at 1550 °C for 2 h showed the highest level of flexural strength due to the formation of the fine-grained microstructure containing mainly the monoclinic and tetragonal zirconia phases. The fracture micromechanism in the studied YSZ ceramics is discussed.

Impact of the material and sintering protocol, layer thickness, and thermomechanical aging on the two-body wear and fracture load of 4Y-TZP crowns

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of the material and corresponding sintering protocol, layer thickness, and aging on the two-body wear (2BW) and fracture load (FL) of 4Y-TZP crowns.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Multi-layer 4Y-TZP crowns in three thicknesses (0.5 mm/1.0 mm/1.5 mm) were sintered by high-speed (Zolid RS) or conventional (Zolid Gen-X) sintering. 2BW of ceramic and enamel antagonist after aging (1,200,000 mechanical-, 6000 thermal-cycles) was determined by 3D-scanning before and after aging and subsequent matching to determine volume and height loss (6 subgroups, n = 16/subgroup). FL was examined initially and after aging (12 subgroups, n = 16/subgroup). Fractographic analyses were performed using light-microscope imaging. Global univariate analysis of variance, one-way ANOVA, linear regression, Spearman's correlation, Kolgomorov-Smirnov, Mann-Whitney U, and t test were computed (alpha = 0.05). Weibull moduli were determined. Fracture types were analyzed using Ciba Geigy table.

RESULTS

Material/sintering protocol did not influence 2BW (crowns: p = 0.908, antagonists: p = 0.059). High-speed sintered Zolid RS presented similar (p = 0.325-0.633) or reduced (p < 0.001-0.047) FL as Zolid Gen-X. Both 4Y-TZPs showed an increased FL with an increasing thickness (0.5(797.3-1429 N) < 1.0(2087-2634 N) < 1.5(2683-3715 N)mm; p < 0.001). For most groups, aging negatively impacted FL (p < 0.001-0.002). Five 0.5 mm specimens fractured, four showed cracks during and after aging.

CONCLUSIONS

High-speed sintered crowns with a minimum thickness of 1.0 mm showed sufficient mechanical properties to withstand masticatory forces, even after a simulated aging period of 5 years.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Despite the manufacturer indicating a thickness of 0.5 mm to be suitable for single crowns, a minimum thickness of 1.0 mm should be used to ensure long-term satisfactory results.

Effect of Cooling Rate on Mechanical Properties, Translucency, Opalescence, and Light Transmission Properties of Monolithic 4Y-TZP during Glazing

A standard cooling rate has not been established for glazing; therefore, the effects of the cooling rate on the properties of zirconia need to be evaluated to predict outcomes in clinical practice. 4Y-TZP glazed at three different cooling rates was analyzed to estimate the effect of cooling rate during glazing on the mechanical and optical properties. Hardness tests, field-emission scanning electron microscopy analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, flexural strength measurement, and optical property evaluations were performed. When 4Y-TZP was glazed at a higher cooling rate (Cooling-1) than the normal cooling rate (Cooling-2), there was no significant difference in grain size, flexural strength, average transmittance, and translucency parameters. The hardness was slightly reduced. The opalescence parameter was reduced for the 2.03 mm thick specimens. When 4Y-TZP was glazed at a lower cooling rate (Cooling-3) than the normal cooling rate, there was no significant difference in hardness, grain size, flexural strength, and translucency parameters. In addition, the average transmittance and opalescence parameters were slightly reduced for the 0.52 and 2.03 mm specimens, respectively. The effects of the cooling rate during glazing on the mechanical and optical properties of 4Y-TZP appear to be minimal and clinically insignificant. Therefore, even if the cooling rate cannot be strictly controlled during glazing, the clinical outcomes will not be significantly affected.

Nanocrystalline Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia Ceramics for Cranial Window Applications

Transparent yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) ceramics are promising for cranial window applications because of their good mechanical and optical properties as well as biocompatibility. YSZ discs with different yttria concentrations were either processed via current-activated pressure-assisted densification (CAPAD) using commercial nanoparticles or densified via spark plasma sintering (SPS) using pyrolysis-synthesized nanoparticles in-house. This study provided critical results to screen composition, processing, microstructure, and cytocompatibility of transparent YSZ discs for cranial window applications. CAPAD-processed YSZ discs with 6 or 8 mol % yttria (6YSZ and 8YSZ) and SPS-densified YSZ discs with 4 mol % yttria (4YSZ_P) showed 200-350 nm polycrystalline grains containing 20-30 nm crystallite domains. SPS-densified YSZ discs with 8 mol % yttria (8YSZ_P) showed larger polycrystalline grains of 819 ± 155 nm with 29 ± 5 nm crystallite domains. CAPAD-processed YSZ discs with 3 mol % yttria (3YSZ) showed 39 ± 9 nm grains. Bone-marrow-derived stem cells (BMSCs) on the polished YSZ discs showed statistically higher spreading areas than those on the unpolished YSZ discs of the same compositions. Generally, polished 8YSZ, 4YSZ_P, and 8YSZ_P discs and unpolished 8YSZ_R, 4YSZ_PR, and 8YSZ_PR discs had lower average cell adhesion densities than other YSZ discs under direct contact conditions. Under indirect contact conditions, all the YSZ disc groups showed similar average cell adhesion densities to the Cell-only control. The groups of polished 4YSZ_P and 8YSZ_P discs, unpolished 4YSZ_PR and 8YSZ_PR discs, and particle control of 8YSZ_Pnp showed higher Y³⁺ ion concentrations than other groups. No mineral deposition was detected on the polished YSZ discs after cell culture. Considering multiple factors such as cytocompatibility, cell adhesion density, Y³⁺ ion release, mineral deposition, and optical transparency collectively, 8YSZ may be the best candidate for the cranial window applications. Further studies are needed to evaluate the long-term transparency and biocompatibility of YSZ discs.

Cytotoxicity and Bonding Property of Bioinspired Nacre-like Ceramic-Polymer Composites

For clinical applications, non-cytotoxicity and good bonding property of dental restorative materials are the most essential and important. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential for clinical applications of two novel bioinspired nacre-like ceramic (yttria-stabilized zirconia)-polymer (polymethyl methacrylate) composites in terms of the cytotoxicity and bonding property. The relative growth rates (24 h) of the Lamellar and Brick-and-mortar composites measured by CCK8 were 102.93%±0.04 and 98.91%±0.03, respectively. According to the results of cytotoxicity and proliferation experiments, the two composites were not cytotoxic to human periodontal ligament fibroblasts (HPDLFs) in vitro. Both composites exhibited improved bonding strength as compared to the Control group (Vita In-Ceram YZ). As the polymer content in the composite material increases, its bonding strength also increases, which enhances the application potential of the material in the field of dental restoration. Meanwhile, by controlling the direction of loading force in the shear test, the effect of microstructure on the bonding strength of anisotropic composites was studied. After sandblasted, the bonding strengths of the Lamellar group in the longitudinal and transverse shear directions were 17.56±1.56 MPa and 18.67±1.92 MPa, respectively, while of the Brick-and-mortar group were 16.36±1.30 MPa and 16.99±1.67 MPa, respectively. The results showed that the loading direction had no significant effect on the bonding strength of the composites.

An In Vitro Study to Evaluate the Effect of Artificial Aging on Translucency, Contrast Ratio, and Color of Zirconia Dental Ceramic at Different Sintering Levels

Increasing demands for aesthetically pleasing dental restorations have promoted the use of materials that display superior optical properties. Zirconia-based all-ceramic systems have good optical properties, thus providing the desired esthetics for dental restorations. The altered oral conditions impact the physical properties of these materials. Multiple studies have been conducted to evaluate the effect of aging on the mechanical properties of computerized-aided design and computerized-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM)-based zirconia; however, there is a scarcity of literature discussing the effect of aging on change in translucency, contrast ratio, and color. Therefore, this research aimed to evaluate the effect of accelerated artificial aging on translucency parameter (TP), contrast ratio (CR), and color of CAD/CAM zirconia at different sintering temperatures. Twenty-eight rectangular-shaped specimens were obtained by CAD/CAM milling of zirconia blank. Sintering of the samples was carried out at four different temperatures 1350 °C, 1400 °C, 1450 °C, and 1500 °C, respectively. Thermocycling of the samples was performed in a thermocycler. TP, CR, and color evaluation of all the samples was done again using a Spectrophotometer. Data acquired were statistically evaluated by one-way ANOVA and Post Hoc test. The highest amount of change in TP was recorded for specimens sintered at 1400 °C (1.86), whereas the least change was attributed to 1350 °C (0.51). The highest change in CR was observed in specimens sintered at 1500 °C (0.0971), and the least change in CR was observed at 1450 °C (0.0086). The highest ΔE values were recorded for 1400 °C against both white (1.86) and black background (2.17), whereas the least change was attributed to 1350 °C against white (0.86) and against a black background (1.41). The changes in TP were significant, but CR did not show any significant change. ΔE values for all the experimental groups were significant, but were below the clinically perceptible range. An increase in sintering temperature increased the translucency.

Digital Tools for Translucence Evaluation of Prosthodontic Materials: Application of Kubelka-Munk Theory

Translucency is one of the most important parameters to be considered by digital systems when predicting the matching appearance and hence the quality of prosthodontic restoration work. Our objective has been to improve the effectiveness of the algorithmic decision systems employed by these devices by (a) determining whether Kubelka-Munk theory can be used as an algorithm for predicting restoration suitability, and (b) evaluating the correlation between the visual evaluation of prosthodontic materials and the predicted translucency based on the use of the ΔE*, OP, CR, and K/S algorithms. In this regard, three zirconia systems and one lithium disilicate have been spectrophotometrically and visually characterized. Based on the results of this study, it has been proven that zirconia systems and lithium disilicate systems exhibit different optical behaviors. The psychophysical experience suggests that none of the existing mathematical methods can adequately estimate translucency, spectrophotometric, and colorimetric techniques, and that which is perceived by an experienced observer. However, translucency evaluation through the K/S algorithmic decision system should not be disregarded. New methods to measure translucency should be developed to improve digital systems for prosthodontic applications.

Fracture Resistance and Fracture Behaviour of Monolithic Multi-Layered Translucent Zirconia Fixed Dental Prostheses with Different Placing Strategies of Connector: An in vitro Study

Purpose

To evaluate the effect of different placing strategies performed in the connector area on fracture resistance and fracture behaviour of monolithic multi-layered translucent zirconia fixed dental prostheses (FDPs).

Materials and Methods

Thirty 3-unit monolithic FDPs were produced and divided into three groups (n = 10) based on the different strategies for placing the connector area of FDPs in multi-layered zirconia blank with varying contents of yttria ranging from 4 to 5 mol%. The groups were as follows: FDPs with connectors placed in dentin layer with 4 mol% yttria content, FDPs with connectors placed in gradient layer, and FDPs with connectors placed in translucent layer with 5 mol% yttria content. A final group (n = 10) of conventional monolithic zirconia with a monolayer of yttria content (4 mol%) has been used as a control group. The specimens were artificially aged using thermocycling and pre-loading procedures and subsequently loaded to fracture using a universal testing machine. Fracture loads and fracture behaviour were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Fisher’s exact tests and statistically evaluated (p ≤ 0.05).

Results

There were no significant differences in fracture loads among the groups based on the placing strategies of the connector area of the FDPs in the multi-layered translucent zirconia blank (p > 0.05). There was no significant difference in fracture loads between monolithic multi-layered translucent zirconia and conventional monolithic translucent zirconia materials (p > 0.05). Fracture behaviour of FDPs with connector area placed in translucent layer differed significantly compared to FDPs with connector area placed in dentin layer and FDPs in control group (p = 0.004).

Conclusion

The placing strategies of the connector used in the computer aided design and manufacturing procedures do not considerably affect fracture resistance of monolithic FDPs made of multi-layered translucent zirconia. Monolithic FDPs made of multi-layered translucent zirconia show comparable strength to FDPs made of conventional translucent zirconia, but with different fracture behaviour.

Optical properties evaluation of rapid sintered translucent zirconia with two dental colorimeters

Background/purpose

The efficient rapid sintering technique has employed to dental zirconia ceramics for shortening the fabrication time of zirconia restorations. The purpose was to compare the optical properties of two generations of rapid sintered translucent zirconia using two dental colorimeters.

Materials and methods

Two generations of translucent zirconia ceramics, 3 mol% yttria-tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3Y-TZP): Copran Zr-i Ultra-T (UT) and Cercon HT (HT), and 5 mol% yttria-tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (5Y-TZP): Cercon xt (XT), of different thicknesses (0.5, 0.8, and 1.2 mm; n = 5) underwent rapid sintering (RS) or conventional sintering (CS). The CIELAB values were measured on the white and black backgrounds, respectively, by digital colorimeters, shadepilot, DeguDent (DD) and Easyshade V, Vita (Vita). Translucency parameter (TP), color difference (ΔE), surface morphology, and surface roughness were evaluated.

Results

RS resulted in reduced lightness, except in the XT group. The chromaticity increased slightly after RS. Translucency decreased with increasing material thickness. ΔE values differed between both sintering processes but were clinically acceptable (ΔE < 5). Grain size of XT decreased after RS. RS did not affect the surface roughness.

Conclusion

RS is a feasible method for shortening the manufacturing time of zirconia restorations. A significant difference in TP value was only in the XT group between both sintering methods as measured on DD. Color differences in rapid sintered translucent zirconia materials are imperceptible and acceptable. The specimen thickness affected more in the TP values of Vita than DD. DD has higher sensitivity to translucency and color compared with Vita.

Mechanical behavior and microstructural characterization of different zirconia polycrystals in different thicknesses

PURPOSE

To characterize the microstructure of three yttria partially stabilized zirconia ceramics and to compare their hardness, indentation fracture resistance (IFR), biaxial flexural strength (BFS), and fatigue flexural strength.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Disc-shaped specimens were obtained from 3Y-TZP (Vita YZ HT), 4Y-PSZ (Vita YZ ST) and 5Y-PSZ (Vita YZ XT), following the ISO 6872/2015 guidelines for BFS testing (final dimensions of 12 mm in diameter, 0.7 and 1.2 ± 0.1 mm in thicknesses). Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses were performed, and mechanical properties were assessed by Vickers hardness, IFR, quasi-static BFS and fatigue tests.

RESULTS

All ceramics showed similar chemical compositions, but mainly differed in the amount of yttria, which was higher as the amount of cubic phase in the diffractogram (5Y-PSZ > 4Y-PSZ > 3Y-TZP). The 4Y- and 5Y-PSZ specimens showed surface defects under SEM, while 3Y-TZP exhibited greater grain uniformity on the surface. 5Y-PSZ and 3Y-TZP presented the highest hardness values, while 3Y-TZP was higher than 4Y- and 5Y-PSZ with regard to the IFR. The 5Y-PSZ specimen (0.7 and 1.2 mm) showed the worst mechanical performance (fatigue BFS and cycles until failure), while 3Y-TZP and 4Y-PSZ presented statistically similar values, higher than 5Y-PSZ for both thicknesses (0.7 and 1.2 mm). Moreover, 3Y-TZP showed the highest (1.2 mm group) and the lowest (0.7 mm group) degradation percentage, and 5Y-PSZ had higher strength degradation than 4Y-PSZ group.

CONCLUSION

Despite the microstructural differences, 4Y-PSZ and 3Y-TZP had similar fatigue behavior regardless of thickness. 5Y-PSZ had the lowest mechanical performance.

Influence of high-speed sintering protocols on translucency, mechanical properties, microstructure, crystallography, and low-temperature degradation of highly translucent zirconia

OBJECTIVES

Impacts of high-speed sintering on the optical and mechanical properties, microstructure, crystallography, and low-temperature degradation of commercial yttria-partially stabilized zirconia (Y-PSZ) were investigated.

METHODS

Five commercial Y-PSZ products (KATANA HT, KATANA STML, KATANA UTML, Zpex 4, and Zpex Smile) were investigated. Specimens were sintered following speed-sintering (~90 min) and conventional-sintering protocols (~7 h), and a group of KATANA STML was super-speed-sintered (18 min). Dimensions of the zirconia specimens after sintering were 14.5 mm (diameter) and 1.2 mm (thickness). Translucency was assessed using a colorimeter. Biaxial flexural strength was measured using a universal testing machine, followed by Weibull analysis. Scanning electron microscopy was used for microstructure assessments. X-ray diffraction was used to analyze the crystallography before and after hydrothermal aging. Low-temperature degradation (LTD) tests were performed at 134 °C under 2-3 bar water vapor in an autoclave.

RESULTS

The translucency and flexural strength were not affected significantly by the sintering programs (p > 0.05). The conventionally sintered KATANA STML and speed-sintered Zpex 4 presented the highest and lowest Weibull modulus, respectively. The conventionally-sintered Y-PSZ had a larger average grain size and smaller fraction of fine grains than those of the speed-sintered specimens. The fractographic analysis of the speed- and conventionally sintered Y-PSZ yielded comparable results. The speed-sintered Y-PSZ exhibited a lower c-ZrO₂ content than that of conventionally-sintered Y-PSZ, except for KATANA HT and KATANA STML. LTD tests indicated that some of the speed and conventionally-sintered Y-PSZ exhibited similar monoclinic volume fractions.

SIGNIFICANCE

Speed-sintering programs are acceptable for Y-PSZ zirconia.

Effects of milling method and artificial ageing on optical properties of high translucent zirconia for chairside restorations

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to evaluate the optical properties of highly translucent 5 mol% yttria, partially stabilised monolithic zirconia, and 3 mol% yttria-stabilised tetragonal zirconia after their subjection to different milling methods and artificial ageing.

METHODS

Two types of pre-shaded zirconia materials were used: inCoris TZI C and Katana STML. A total of 120 specimens were categorised according to the milling method (dry or wet-milling) and the solution used for milling (fresh distilled water or impregnated water with residues of CAD/CAM ceramic materials). The translucency and contrast ratios of all specimens were calculated after they were subjected to sintering and accelerated ageing. The material phase composition was tested before and after ageing, using X-ray diffraction analysis to evaluate T-M phase transformation. Data were statistically analysed via a three-way analysis of variance between the subject factors, the material and milling method, and the within-subject factor, ageing. The analysis of covariance model was used to analyse the changes in translucency and contrast ratio between baseline and ageing, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05.

RESULTS

Katana STML and inCoris TZI C showed the highest translucency when dry-milled (21.9 ± 1.4, and 11.8 ± 0.7, respectively), and the lowest when milled with used impregnated water (5.4 ± 1.2 and 10.7 ± 1.3, respectively). Wet-milling using impregnated water, should be avoided owing to the saturation of alumina particles. Accelerated ageing resulted in the same pattern for both materials. Significance Dry milling of highly translucent zirconia can result in higher translucency and lower contrast ratio values.

Effect of Veneering and Hydrothermal Aging on the Translucency of Newly Introduced Extra Translucent and High Translucent Zirconia with Different Thicknesses

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of veneering and aging on the translucency of newly introduced extra and high translucent zirconia with different thickness.

Materials and Methods

One hundred forty disk-shaped specimens were fabricated from two translucent zirconia blocks (VITA YZ XT and VITA YZ HT), and they are milled with CAD/CAM system. Then, specimens were divided into nonveneered (XT, HT) and veneered groups (XTV, HTV). Nonveneered groups were prepared with four different thicknesses (0.5-1-1.5-2 mm). Veneered groups were divided into three subgroups (n = 10) for veneering with base dentin ceramic with thicknesses of 0.5 + 0.5, 0.5 + 1, and 0.5 + 1.5 mm. A spectrophotometer was used to calculate the translucency parameter (TP) and contrast ratio (CR) of all specimens before and after aging. Statistical analysis was performed using 3-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests (p < 0.05).

Results

TP values were significantly affected by thickness of specimens (p < 0.001). VITA YZ XT was significantly found more translucent than VITA YZ HT. The highest translucency was observed in the XT-0.5 mm group. There is no significant difference between translucency of the veneered and nonveneered groups in the same thickness for XT. On the contrary, veneering significantly affected translucency of HT. TP values significantly decreased after aging for all groups. After aging, translucency value difference before and after aging was the highest in the XT-0.5 mm group whereas the HTV-2 mm group showed the lowest difference after aging. TP decreased significantly as thickness of specimen increases regardless of the material type. Extra translucent and nonveneered zirconia groups are more prone to hydrothermal aging.

Conclusions

The translucency parameter of zirconia ceramics was significantly influenced by both material type and veneering. Also, extra translucent and nonveneered zirconia groups are more susceptible to hydrothermal aging.

Optical properties of CAD-CAM monolithic systems compared: three multi-layered zirconia and one lithium disilicate system

Objective

this in vitro investigation aims to evaluate and compare optical properties of three types of esthetic CAD-CAM monolithic multi-layered zirconia materials with a control (conventional lithium disilicate, IPS e. max CAD).

Methods

Four monolithic CAD-CAM ceramic materials were investigated: Ceramill Zolid® FX Multilayer (ZF), IPS e. max® ZirCAD MT Multi (ZM), Katana® STML (KS) and one lithium disilicate glass-ceramics as a control (IPS e. max® CAD LT; LC). A total of 72 (15 × 15 × 1 mm) samples were CAD CAM fabricated and sintered based on sample-size power calculations, and each material comprised 18 samples. The translucency and opalescence parameters with the contrast ratio were evaluated with a dental spectrophotometer over the backgrounds of black and white. The data were analyzed by ANOVA, then Bonferroni post hoc comparison test was made between groups. The statistical significance was set at p < 0.05.

Results

Zirconia materials revealed lower optical properties than the lithium disilicate control LC (P < 0.05). TP values ranged from 14.174 to 20.439. No differences were detected between the zirconia products in terms of TP and CR (P = 1.000). OP values ranged from 5.068 to 10.097. The lowest OP values were found statistically significant for ZF followed by KS and ZM (P = 1.000). LC had the highest TP and OP values, as well as the lowest CR (p < 0.05).

Conclusions

The optical properties of monolithic zirconia systems tested here are still lower than those of lithium disilicate glass-ceramics. The only difference observed between the monolithic CAD CAM zirconia materials, was for the low opalescence parameter for the ZF.

Clinical significance

Multi-layered monolithic zirconia systems have better esthetics by shade layers resembling natural tooth color gradients. CAD-CAM technology allowed for in-office milling and shaping of restorations using these systems. This study reports on their optical properties affecting human vision/perception of natural tooth shade to conclude about their use in the esthetic zones.

Effect of sintering condition and low-temperature degradation on the flexural strength and phase transformation of zirconia

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The traditional sintering of zirconia takes an extended time, and accelerated treatments have been developed to reduce treatment time and manufacturing costs. Studies evaluating the effect of sintering time on the mechanical properties of zirconia are lacking.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of the sintering condition and the low-temperature degradation (LTD) of zirconia on the flexural strength of monolithic zirconia.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Zirconia specimens (LUXEN Enamel) were sintered at 1500 °C, 1530 °C, and 1560 °C for 4, 5, 6, 7, and 12 hours and subjected to LTD (n=10). Control specimens were assessed in the nontreated condition. The 3-point flexural strength was measured by using a universal testing machine. The crystal phases of the specimens were compared and quantitatively analyzed through X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and the crystal grain size was measured by using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). Two-way ANOVA and the independent sample t test were used to analyze the experimental results (α=.05).

RESULTS

In the group not subjected to LTD, there was no difference in flexural strength according to the change in sintering temperature and sintering time (P>.05). The group subjected to LTD showed a difference in flexural strength according to sintering time difference (P<.001). The flexural strength of the zirconia with LTD exposure increased compared with that of the zirconia specimen not subjected to LTD (P<.001). With LTD exposure, cubic and monoclinic crystals increased, tetragonal crystals decreased, and the particle size increased. As the sintering temperature increased, the particle size increased, but not according to the sintering time.

CONCLUSIONS

At all sintering times, the flexural strength of zirconia was over 800 MPa, which is the minimum flexural strength of a 4-unit or longer prosthesis as specified in the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 6872. With LTD exposure, the increase in the flexural strength of zirconia was associated with the phase change from tetragonal to monoclinic.

Nanoscale physico-mechanical properties of an aging resistant ZTA composite

OBJECTIVE

To characterize the effects of aging on the nanomechanical properties and 3D surface topographical parameters of an experimental Zirconia Toughened Alumina (ZTA) composite compared to its respective individual counterpart materials.

METHODS

Disk-shaped specimens comprised of three material groups were processed: 1) ZTA 70/30 (70% alumina reinforced with 30% second-generation 3Y-TZP); 2) Zpex (Second-generation 3Y-TZP), and; 3) Al₂O₃ (High purity Alumina) (n = 10/material, 12 × 1 mm). After synthesis, ceramic powders were pressed, the green-body samples were sintered and polished. Nanoindentation testing was performed to record elastic modulus (E) and hardness (H). Interferometry was utilized to assess 3D surface roughness parameters (S_a, S_q), while X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) assessed the crystalline content and microstructure. All tests were performed before and after simulated aging (134°C, 2.2 bar, 20 h). Statistical analyses were performed using linear mixed-model and least square difference pos-hoc tests (α = 5%).

RESULTS

XRD spectra indicated increase of monoclinic peaks for Zpex (~18%) relative to ZTA 70/30 (~2.5%) after aging. Additionally, aging did not affect the surface roughness parameters of ZTA 70/30 and Al₂O₃, although a significant increase in S_a was recorded for Zpex following aging (~90 nm) (p < 0.001). Al₂O₃ yielded the highest H and E values (H:21 GPa, E: 254 GPa), followed by ZTA 70/30 (H: 13 GPa, E: 214 GPa) and Zpex (H:11 GPa, E: 167 GPa), all significantly different (p < 0.03).

CONCLUSION

ZTA 70/30 and Al₂O₃ presented high hydrothermal stability with respect to all evaluated variables, where artificial aging significantly increased the monoclinic content and surface roughness of Zpex.

Biaxial flexural strength and phase transformation characteristics of dental monolithic zirconia ceramics with different sintering durations: An in vitro study

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Zirconia is a polymorphic metastable material which can react through a phase transformation from tetragonal to monoclinic when exposed to mechanical, physical, or chemical stimuli.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the fracture strength and phase structure of different high-translucency zirconia ceramics depending on the changes in sintering duration and thermocycling.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Two monolithic zirconia ceramics, Katana (KAT) and NexxZr (NEX), were used to prepare disk-shaped specimens (n=66). The sintering temperature was 1500 °C, and 3 different sintering durations were tested: 1 hour, 2 hours (recommended by the manufacturer), and 3 hours. Thermocycling was applied to half the specimens. Fracture strength was calculated, and the specimens were analyzed with an X-ray diffractometer (XRD) to determine the level of the phase transformation. The normal distribution of the data was analyzed by using the Shapiro-Wilk test. Two-way ANOVA was used to compare multiple groups (α=.05). The Fisher least significant difference test was applied to identify significant differences in fracture strength. The paired-specimen t test was applied to perform intragroup comparisons.

RESULTS

Sintering duration significantly affected the fracture strength of KAT (P=.007). For nonthermocycled specimens, the fracture strength of NEX was significantly higher than that of KAT (P<.001). Thermocycling had a significant effect on fracture strength depending on sintering duration and zirconia ceramic interaction (P=.046).

CONCLUSIONS

The sintering duration only affected the KAT zirconia, and the fracture strength of KAT decreased when sintered for 3 hours. Thermocycling decreased the fracture strength of both zirconias, except when the sintering duration was 2 hours for NEX. The fracture strength was higher for NEX than for KAT. Tetragonal-monoclinic phase transformation was not found for either zirconia according to the XRD analysis.

Adhesion to Zirconia: A Systematic Review of Surface Pretreatments and Resin Cements

This systematic review aims to evaluate the different pretreatments of the zirconia surface and resin cement in order to determine a valid operative protocol for adhesive cementation. Methodologies conducted for this study followed the Prisma (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis) guidelines. An electronic search was performed in four databases. The established focus question was: “What type of surface conditioning method is the one that obtains the best adhesion values to zirconia over time by applying a resin cement?” Forty-five relevant papers were found to qualify for final inclusion. In total, 260 different surface pretreatment methods, mainly combinations of air-abrasion protocols and adhesive promoters, were investigated. Altogether, the use of two artificial aging methods, three types of cement and four testing methods was reported. The results showed that mechanicochemical surface pretreatments offered the best adhesive results. Self-adhesive cement and those containing 10-MDP obtained the best results in adhesion to zirconia. Artificial aging reduced adhesion, so storage in water for 30 days or thermocycling for 5000 cycles is recommended. A standardized adhesive protocol has not been established due to a lack of evidence

Impact of changes in sintering temperatures on characteristics of 4YSZ and 5YSZ

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different sintering temperatures on biaxial flexural strength (BFS), dynamic loading, surface hardness, color reproduction, translucency, surface roughness and microstructure of zirconia with 4 mol% yttria (4YSZ) compared to zirconia with 5 mol% yttria (5YSZ).

METHODS

Zirconia discs with 12 mm diameter and 1.2 mm thickness were prepared and divided into three groups (n = 53) according to different sintering temperatures (1400 °C, 1500 °C and 1600 °C). Each group was divided into five subgroups (n = 10) according to the dynamic loading procedure (none, 50%, 65%, 75% and 80%) conducted before the quasi-static BFS test and another subgroup (n = 3) used for X-ray-diffraction (XRD) microstructure analysis. BFS test and dynamic loading were performed with a piston-on-three-ball test. The surface hardness was evaluated according to Vickers. Color reproduction and translucency were measured with a spectrophotometer. A 3D laser scanning microscope was used to determine the surface roughness. Grain size measurements were performed using SEM.

RESULTS

A significant increase in biaxial flexural strength was observed while the sintering temperature decreased. 4YSZ had significantly higher results in biaxial flexural strength than 5YSZ. A decrease in sintering temperature resulted in a significant increase in Vickers hardness. Furthermore, 4YSZ showed significantly better color reproduction with increasing sintering temperature. At higher temperatures (1500 °C and 1600 °C), 4YSZ showed better color reproduction than 5YSZ. Compared to 4YSZ, specimens of 5YSZ exhibited significant higher translucency. Using XRD, a distorted tetragonal phase was detected in addition to regular tetragonal and cubic phases in specimens without any stress and at a low sintering temperature. The grain sizes of both materials increased with an increase in sintering temperature.

CONCLUSION

The sintering temperature has significant effects on the microstructure and thus on the mechanical and optical properties of the evaluated zirconia.

Effect of sintering and aging processes on the mechanical and optical properties of translucent zirconia

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Sintering holding times and aging conditions may affect the optical, mechanical, and structural properties of polychromatic multitranslucent zirconia. However, a consensus on the ideal sintering condition for this material is lacking.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of different sintering holding and autoclave aging times on the flexural strength (FS), grain size, and translucency parameter (TP₀₀) of a translucent zirconia.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Sixty bar-shaped and 60 rectangular-shaped specimens were prepared from computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) zirconia blocks and split into 2 groups to be sintered at 1550 °C for different holding times (regular: 2 hours, prolonged: 5 hours). The specimens were then divided into 3 subgroups and subjected to aging processes (control, aging for 60 minutes, aging for 120 minutes). FS values were obtained by using a 3-point bend test and Weibull analysis was conducted. Grain size evaluations were performed by using scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations. TP₀₀ was measured with a spectrophotometer. Statistical evaluation included the Kolmogorov-Smirnov, 2-way ANOVA, and Tukey HSD tests (α=.05).

RESULTS

The sintering procedure, aging, and their interaction significantly influenced the TP₀₀ (P<.05). FS values and grain sizes were affected by aging only (P<.001). Both aging times resulted in reduced FS and increased grain sizes. Prolonged sintering in combination with 120 minutes of aging negatively affect the TP₀₀ scores (P<.05).

CONCLUSIONS

FS values were similar under regular and prolonged sintering. Prolonged sintering led to a decrease in translucency after 120 minutes of aging. Steam autoclave aging can affect the optical and mechanical properties of translucent zirconia.

Effect of sintering process on microstructure, 4-point flexural strength, and grain size of yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal for use in monolithic dental restorations

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Modifications have been made in the microstructure and sintering parameters of monolithic zirconia to improve esthetics qualities and avoid chipping of 2-layer restorations. However, how these modifications affect the physical and mechanical properties of zirconia is unclear.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the influence of different sintering parameters on the microstructure, 4-point flexural strength, density, and grain size of 2 commercially available zirconia advocated for the fabrication of monolithic dental prostheses and 1 commercially available zirconia for use as a core material.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Three presintered blocks (Ceramill Zolid, Prettau, and IPS e.max ZirCAD) were used. Specimens were cut and sintered as per the manufacturer's recommendation or as per a modified heating protocol. Ceramill Zolid (Z1450) was sintered at 1450 °C, Prettau (P1600) was sintered at 1600 °C, and IPS e.max ZirCAD (I1530) was sintered at 1530 °C by following the manufacturer's heating protocol. Groups Ceramill Zolid Z1530 and Z1600 were sintered at temperatures higher than the manufacturer's recommendation. Specimens from each group (n=13) were analyzed with X-ray diffraction (XRD), density calculus, average grain size measurement, and 4-point flexural tests. Data were compared by using ANOVA (α=.05).

RESULTS

XRD analysis showed the presence of a tetragonal metastable phase in all groups before and after sintering. No significant differences were found in relative density values for the 3 Ceramill groups (5.98 g/cm³). Groups I1530 (6.03 g/cm³) and P1600 (6.03 g/cm³) had similar density results greater than 6.00 g/cm³. The average grain size of all groups remained lower than 1 μm. P1600 had the highest grain size (0.817 μm), and Z1450 presented the lowest grain size (0.465 μm). P1600 showed the most homogeneous flexural strength and the highest Weibull modulus (m=8.22). Z1530 presented the lowest Weibull modulus (m=4.58). IPS e.max ZirCAD (I1530) had the highest flexural strength (1057.41 ±150.54 MPa), and Ceramill Zolid Z1450 had the lowest (621.01 ±138.08 MPa).

CONCLUSIONS

The flexural strength, microstructure, crystal phase, and grain size of the analyzed zirconia varied as per the sintering processing. The IPS e.max ZirCAD had the highest flexural strength (1057.41 ±150.54 MPa), followed by Prettau zirconia (864.18 ±118.21), with a statistically significant difference (P<.05). The Ceramill Zolid zirconia presented the lowest flexural strength, as well as the lowest reliability for all sintering parameters used (Z1450: 621.01 ±138.08 MPa and m=5.42; Z1530: 713.10 ±175.44 MPa and m=4.58; Z1600: 630.15 ±112.08 MPa and m=6.87). At a lower heating rate (8 °C/min), the final density increased and excessive grain growth in group Z1530 was prevented.

Effects of sintering time on translucency and color of translucent zirconia ceramics

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the effect of sintering time on translucency and color of translucent zirconia ceramics.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Sixty translucent zirconia (5Y-TZP) specimens (12 × 1.6 mm, Katana (KAT) and NexxZr (NEX)) were divided into six groups (n = 10) according to sintering time; 1, 2 (specified by manufacturer-control), and 3 hs. Color differences (ΔEab) within same material when sintered using different times and between materials when same sintering time was used were calculated, as well as translucency parameters (TP) after the use of each sintering time. Data for ΔEab and TP were analyzed with two-way ANOVAs, pairwise comparisons, and Fisher's LSD Test (Post-hoc).

RESULTS

When 1 or 3 h were used, color difference from the color of specimens when manufacturer-specified time (2 h) was used was similar for both KAT and NEX. ΔEab values of NEX were significantly higher than KAT when sintered for 1 or 3 h (P < 0.001). TP increased for KAT when sintered for 1 h, and was higher than NEX. TP for NEX increased when sintered for 3 h (P < 0.001), but was not significantly different than that of KAT.

CONCLUSIONS

Effect of 1 or 3-h sintering on color was similar for both zirconias. For NEX, this effect resulted in greater differences from the color of specimens when manufacturer-specified time was used. Sintering for 1 h increased the translucency of KAT.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

When high translucency is desired, clinicians may prefer 1-h sintering for KAT zirconia. When lower translucency is desired, 3-h sintering for NEX can be used. However, for NEX, the color after 1- or 3-h sintering was different than the color obtained with manufacturer-specified time, and this difference may affect the final color of restoration compared to the final color when manufacturer-specified time is used.

Microwave assisted synthesis of Fe3O4 stabilized ZrO2 nanoparticles - Free radical scavenging, radiolabeling and biodistribution in rabbits

AIMS

In vivo biodistribution of radio labeled ZrO₂ nanoparticles is addressed for better imaging, therapy and diagnosis. Nanoparticles are synthesized by microwave assisted sol-gel technique using Fe₃O₄ as a stabilizer. Antioxidant assay, hemolytic activity in human blood and biodistribution in rabbits was explored to study the therapeutical as well as in vivo targeted diagnostic applications of as synthesized nanoparticles.

MAIN METHODS

Fe₃O₄ stabilized zirconia nanoparticles are synthesized using microwave assisted sol-gel method. Microwave (MW) powers are varied in the range of 100 to 1000 W. As synthesized nanoparticles are evaluated using different characterizations such as X-ray diffractometer, scanning electron microscope, Raman spectroscopy, impedance analyzer, Vickers micro hardness indenter, FTIR, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. In vitro activity of synthesized nanoparticles is checked in freshly extracted human blood serum. To study biodistribution of Fe₃O₄ stabilized zirconia nanoparticles in rabbit, technetium-99 m was used for labeling purpose. The labeling efficacy and stability of labeled nanoparticles are also measured with instant thin layer chromatography (ITLC) method. Intravenous injection of ^99mTc-Fe₃O₄ stabilized zirconia nanoparticles (0.2 ml), containing 110 MBq of radioactivity, is performed to study the biodistribution; nanoparticles are injected into the ear vein of animal (rabbit).

KEY FINDINGS

Zirconia (ZrO₂) nanoparticles (NPs) are stabilized using Fe₃O₄ that were prepared by means of microwave assisted sol-gel method. Crystallite size (~20 nm) agrees well with the values required to stabilize tetragonal zirconia (t-ZrO₂). Volume shrinkage results in high value of hardness (~1369). Dielectric constant values, compatible for biomedical application, are observed for tetragonally stabilized samples. Low value of hemolytic response is observed for Fe₃O₄ stabilized ZrO₂ NPs. ^99mTc radio labeled ZrO₂ NPs proved to be potential candidate to study biodistribution. Biodistribution studies show stability of radiolabeled NPs in the original suspension as well as in blood serum. CT scan of rabbit is performed for several times to check the biodistribution of NPs with time and survival of rabbit. Results suggest that these NPs can also be used as targeted nanoparticles as well as variants of drug payload carrier.

SIGNIFICANCE

Results signify that Fe₃O₄ stabilized ZrO₂ nanoparticles synthesized by microwave assisted sol-gel method may be considered as "all-rounder" nanoplatform and are safe enough to be used in diagnostic as well as therapeutic purposes.
