J Strength Cond Res 37(9): e521-e526, 2023-The purpose of this study was, first, to investigate individual longitudinal 2,000 m rowing ergometer performance (2,000 erg) development of world class male rowers from the beginning of their career until reaching the elite level and to compare ELITE performance development with those who did not reach podium places and, second, to provide 2,000 erg milestones for talent prediction in rowing. Individual annual 2,000 erg performances of 54 male rowers were analyzed from age 15 and throughout their career. Olympic or World Championships medal winners (ELITE; n = 11) were compared with those who did not reach international podium places. Two thousand erg increased ( p ≤ 0.05) until the age of 24 in ELITE, while plateaued earlier for less successful rowers. No differences in the rate of performance improvement were found between ELITE and lower performers ( p > 0.05). At the age of 20, performance between ELITE and international level nonmedal winners reached significant difference (480.7 ± 20.9 W vs. 435.3 ± 33.9 W, respectively) and remained different onwards ( p ≤ 0.05). However, the average of the 10 best seasons cross-sectional performances of less successful rowers were significantly higher until age 18, compared with ELITE. ELITE rowers were able to improve their 2,000 erg performance to higher age; therefore, it is difficult to predict elite performers in junior rowers. Cross-sectional performances of less successful rowers may indicate temporary high-level performers, who might not be able to advance the elite level.

Abstract
Beach handball is characterized by high- and low-intensity efforts on an unstable surface. Players are expected to display high levels of physical performance on sand, though there are no data concerning success in elite players. Purpose: This study aimed to address anthropometric, fitness, and sport-specific skills components in beach handball, by comparing elite national team beach handball players (world champions) to sub-elite players (playing at a regular club). Method: A total of 91 senior players (more than 21 years old) of both genders (19 world champions) were assessed for anthropometry, 5-m acceleration, 15-m sprint, handgrip strength, horizontal jump, and three specific sport-specific skills (ball velocities in standing, inflight and spin throwing) at a beach court. Anthropometric, physiological, and sport-specific skill test variables were analyzed as a multiple dependent variable using a multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) with sex and level (elite vs sub-elite) as the fixed factors. SPSS (25.0) was used, significance was assumed at p < .05. Results: The results highlighted that for male and female athletes, horizontal jump, 6-m standing, spin, and inflight throwing discriminated between elite and sub-elite groups (p < .001). Conclusion: The study suggests that the factors which differentiate between elite and sub-elite performers in beach handball are horizontal jump and technical ability via the performance of specific throwing skills, rather than anthropometric or any other physical variables, irrespective of sex. These findings highlight some of the relevant physical capacities and skills that need to be developed over the years of preparation of top-level beach handball players.

Abstract
Introdução: a avaliação do potencial esportivo é uma etapa importante na descoberta de novos talentos e deve utilizar preditores relevantes do desempenho. Objetivo: investigar a importância atribuída por treinadores aos determinantes do desempenho no atletismo, analisando diferenças entre os tipos de prova. Metodologia: participaram 12 treinadores brasileiros de atletismo (11 homens; 83% de Minas Gerais; 75% com experiência no alto rendimento e 42% com títulos internacionais). Aplicou-se um questionário contendo seis fatores e 51 indicadores do desempenho no atletismo. Os treinadores responderam em relação a importância atribuída aos fatores antropométrico, físico-motor, técnico, tático, psicológico e socioambiental, numa escala Likert (1-nada importante e 5-extremamente importante) e a ordem de importância, considerando do 1º ao 6º mais importante. Avaliaram ainda a importância para o desempenho de velocistas, fundistas, saltadores, lançadores e provas combinadas. Resultados e discussão: a ordem de importância dos fatores de desempenho foi: 1º) Físico-motor, 2º) Técnico, 3º) Psicológico, 4º) Antropométrico, 5º) Tático e 6º) Socioambiental. O fator tático, entretanto, foi o mais importante para os fundistas e atletas de provas combinadas. Conclusão: a opinião dos treinadores revelou que as características físico-motoras, técnicas e psicológicas são, nesta ordem, os principais fatores determinantes do desempenho no atletismo. Porém, é preciso considerar as diferenças observadas em relação aos grupos de provas, pois cada um apresenta particularidades que caracterizam um perfil específico.

Abstract
Draft-legal triathlons are the main short-distance races worldwide and are those on which talent-identification programs are usually focused. Performance in these races depends on multiple factors; however, many investigations do not focus on elite triathletes. Therefore, the aim of this narrative review was to carry out a systematic literature search to define the elite female and male triathlete profiles and their competition demands in draft-legal triathlons. This will allow us to summarize the main determinant factors of high-level triathletes as a basis for talent detection. A comprehensive review of Web of Science and Scopus was performed using the search strategy: Triathl* and (performance or competition or profile) and (elite or professional or “high performance” or “high level” or talent). A total of 1325 research documents were obtained, and after screening following the criteria, only 83 articles were selected. After data synthesis, elite triathlete aspects such as age, physiological, anthropometric, and psychosocial profile or competition demands were studied in the scientific literature. Thus, it is essential that when implementing talent identification programs, these factors must be considered. However, constant updating is needed due the continuous regulatory changes and the need of triathletes to adapt to these new competition demands.

Abstract
Background: We examined the explanatory power of the Spanish triathlon talent identification (TID) tests for later World Triathlon Series (WTS)-level racing performance as a function of gender. Methods: Youth TID (100 m and 1000 m swimming and 400 m and 1000 m running) test performance times for when they were 14–19 years old, and WTS performance data up to the end of 2017, were obtained for 29 female and 24 male “successful” Spanish triathletes. The relationships between the athletes’ test performances and their later best WTS ranking positions and performance times were modeled using multiple linear regression. Results: The swimming and running TID test data had greater explanatory power for best WTS ranking in the females and for best WTS position in the males (R2a = 0.34 and 0.37, respectively, p ≤ 0.009). The swimming TID times were better related to later race performance than were the running TID times. The predictive power of the TID tests for WTS performance was, however, low, irrespective of exercise mode and athlete gender. Conclusions: These results confirm that triathlon TID tests should not be based solely on swimming and running performance. Moreover, the predictive value of the individual tests within the Spanish TID battery is gender specific.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the explanatory capacity of the Spanish Triathlon Federation’s talent identification tests in relation to performance in competition in subsequent years. We used an exploratory longitudinal study design to establish the relationship between talent identification tests completed by 247 triathletes (97 women and 150 men) aged from 14 to 19 years and the results they obtained over the years in competition. The battery of tests included freestyle swimming (100 and 1000 m) and running (400 and 1000 m). The results indicate that the explanatory capacity of these tests for split places in competition in the corresponding discipline was highest in the 1000-m swimming test, with a value of 0.34 for the adjusted coefficient of determination (R2a) (p ≤ 0.001), followed by the 1000-m running and 100-m swimming tests, where the highest R2a values were 0.26 and 0.19, respectively. No significant model was found for the 400-m running test. It was concluded that the explanatory capacity of the tests analysed for predicting performance in the discipline in competition was low. However, it was higher for the swimming and running tests of longer distance.

Abstract
INTRODUÇÃO: Nas competições esportivas disputadas por categorias de idade, acredita-se que jovens nascidos nos primeiros meses do ano tenham vantagens, por serem alguns meses mais maduros do que seus pares. Esta diferença na idade relativa pode influenciar a seleção dos atletas pelos treinadores. Este fenômeno, comumente estudado em esportes coletivos, tem sido pouco investigado em esportes individuais.OBJETIVO: O presente estudo analisou o trimestre de nascimento dos atletas olímpicos de triatlo de ambos os sexos que participaram das Olimpíadas de Londres 2012.MÉTODOS: Foi identificado o quartil (trimestre) de nascimento de 111 atletas (55 homens e 56 mulheres). Para a análise dos dados, empregou-se o teste qui-quadrado com nível de significância de 5%.RESULTADOS: Nos homens, foi observada uma maior predominância de atletas nascidos no primeiro e segundo quartis (X2 = 11,545; gl= 3; p=0,01), enquanto que nas mulheres esta tendência não foi observada (X2=1,286; gl=3; p=0,73). Verificou-se ainda relação significativa entre o semestre de nascimento e a conquista de medalhas.CONCLUSÃO: O efeito da idade relativa foi observado nos triatletas das Olimpíadas de Londres 2012 do sexo masculino, sendo relacionado ao desempenho dos atletas. Isto sugere que a data de nascimento pode ter influenciado a seleção desses atletas nas etapas de formação. Novos estudos ainda são necessários para confirmar o fenômeno da idade relativa no triatlo.
