Prevalence and risk factors of monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis in Turkish children

Prevalence of nocturnal enuresis among children of Aseer region in Saudi Arabia

Introduction

Nocturnal enuresis (NE) in children is a very common problem managed in pediatric urology. In this study, we present the prevalence of NE in children in Aseer region in Saudi Arabia.

Methodology

This study was conducted as a descriptive cross-sectional survey to estimate the prevalence of NE among 555 Saudi children aged 5-15 years in Aseer region in Saudi Arabia. Data collection was done through a questionnaire, which included questions on sociodemographic data, personal knowledge, enuresis-related characteristics, risk factors, and management modalities.

Results

This study identified a prevalence of enuresis of 24% of the study population, most of whom were boys. The majority of the parents had a high educational level. Clinical characteristics of the study population showed: 9% have a family history of NE, 2.2% have a history of neurological disorder, 10.0% have a history of urinary tract infections, 66.8% have associated daytime urgency, 67% have urine-holding behavior, and 19.5% have associated daytime enuresis of the study population.

Conclusion

Our study found that 24% of children in the Aseer region in Saudi Arabia have NE. Our study finding helps us to understand the prevalence of NE in Aseer region in Saudi Arabia, and this can be applied to other regions in the kingdom. Furthermore, this finding helps us to understand the need to raise awareness in the community about NE and the need to educate the nonpediatric urologist health-care provider about the best management practice for NE.

Relationship between toilet training process and primary nocturnal enuresis in children and adolescents - A systematic review

INTRODUCTION

Primary nocturnal enuresis (PNE) affects the quality of life of children and families and may lead to low self-esteem and social isolation. The pathophysiology of enuresis is multifactorial. This systematic review aimed to investigate the relationship between toilet training (TT) and PNE in children and adolescents.

METHODS

We searched for articles about TT and PNE in MEDLINE (via PubMed), SCOPUS and WEB of SCIENCE databases. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews (PRISMA) statement was used to guide the systematic review. Prior to the study, the review protocol was registered and approved in PROSPERO under the protocol CRD42021270976. The Risk of Bias in Non-Randomized Studies of Exposures (ROBINS-E) was used to analyze the biases of the select studies.

RESULTS

A total of 570 studies were initially selected. Of these, eight articles were included in this systematic review, with a total number of 5990 participants aged between 5 and 18 years diagnosed with PNE. Seven of the eight articles reported that prolonged use of disposable diapers for more than one-year, late initiation of the TT process or non-acceptance of the Assisted Infant TT or Elimination Communication approach, use of coercive approaches, and complete of TT after 24 months of age increase the risk of enuresis. Only one of the selected studies did not find an association between the start of TT after 24 months of age and the presence of isolated PNE. Three studies did not mention the approach used in the TT process.

CONCLUSION

Most of the articles reviewed showed that prolonged diaper use, delay in the start or completion of the TT and use of coercive approaches increase the risk of enuresis. On the other hand, one study showed no relationship between the start of TT after 24 months of age and the presence of isolated enuresis.

Relationship between primary monosymptomatic enuresis and process toilet training: a case-control

OBJECTIVE

Primary monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (PMNE) is a prevalent condition in childhood, and the pathophysiology is multifactorial. This study investigated the relationship between the toilet training process (TT) and PMNE in children and adolescents.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

A case-control study was carried out from 2015 to 2020. The presence of PMNE was identified according to International Children's Continence Society criteria. A semi-structured questionnaire was applied to assess TT.

RESULTS

The study included 103 children and adolescents with PMNE and 269 participants with normal psychomotor development without PMNE (control group [CG]). Readiness signals were more remembered and less frequent in participants with PMNE (p=0.001) when compared to control group. No differences were found between the groups regarding the onset age of the daytime TT (p= 0.10), the nocturnal TT (p=0.08), the acquisition of daytime continence (p=0.06), and the type of equipment used for the TT (p=0.99). The use of Child-Oriented approach in group of children with enuresis was lower than in controls [87.4% (90/103) versus 94% (250/266)], respectively (OR= 0.44, 95% CI 0.21-0.94, p = 0.039).

CONCLUSIONS

The age of onset of TT, acquisition of daytime continence, and the type of equipment were not associated with higher occurrence of PMNE. On the other hand, the Child-Oriented approach was a protective factor for the occurrence of PMNE.

THE EFFECT OF ADENOTONSİLLECTOMY SURGERY İN PEDİATRİC ENUREZİS NOCTURNA PATİENTS

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy on EN in patients with tonsil hypertrophy and adenoid hypertrophy. Material and Method: Data of 94 patients was retrospectively valuated. The frequency of EN of the patients and whether they improved after the operation were investigated. Results: The mean age was 9.59 ± 2.04. EN patients was higher in the group with Adenoid Vegetation. EN was detected in 73 of the patients before surgery. There was a complete improvement in 63 patients and partial improvement in 10 patients after the operation. There was no statistically significant difference in EN improvement between the groups. Conclusion: In a multidisciplinary approach, the surgical procedures can be effective in the treatment of EN. Therefore the patients admitting with EN symptomsshould be questioned for complaints about upper airway obstruction and The correct surgical procedure for children with symptoms may constitute an important step in their treatment.

Evaluation of Factors Affecting Enuresis in 6- to 12-Year-Old Children Referred to the Pediatric Nephrology Clinic

Enuresis is one of the most common disorders in children, and if left untreated can cause anxiety, low self-esteem, and family problems. The aim of this study was to investigate the factors associated with enuresis to provide recommendations for more efficient prevention and treatment. A cross-sectional study was performed on children aged 6 to 12 years with enuresis, referred to the pediatric clinic between April 2017 and April 2018. Children were divided into two groups: monosymptomatic enuresis and healthy subjects. Then, a questionnaire was completed by their parents to assess the factors related to enuresis. The data were analyzed using SPSS software. In this study, out of 140 children with an average age of 8.22 ± 2.01 years, 77 cases (55%) had enuresis, of which 57 (40.7%) had primary enuresis, and 20 cases (14.3%) had secondary enuresis. There was a significant difference between the control and the case groups in terms of: father's education, family income, family history, number of people sleeping in the room, family problems, problems at school, history of urinary tract infections, history of pinworms, difficulty falling asleep, difficulty in waking up, feeling tired after waking up, and drowsiness during the day. Enuresis is associated with several physiological, psychological, and genetic factors. Controlling these factors requires paying attention to the elements such as the mental health of the family and child's sleep health through education, family awareness, and counseling.

Prevalence of Nocturnal Enuresis among Saudi Children Population

Background Nocturnal enuresis (NE) is the involuntary urination that occurs while asleep after an age when bladder control at night is expected. It has a global incidence of 1.4%-28% among 6-12 years old children. The aim of this study is to show the prevalence, risk factors, types of provided treatment of enuresis among studied children in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Methods A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out among Saudi children, 3-12 years of age, from different cities in Saudi Arabia, during the period from 20 October to 20 November 2019. Data was collected by using a pre-designed questionnaire that was distributed online and included questions designed to fulfill the study objectives. Results This study reported that 31.2% of Saudi children of the chosen ages are suffered from enuresis, the majority occurred at day and night by 55.1% while 43.9% occurred only at night. Participants described types of provided treatment as follows: behavioral modification was the most commonly used by 31.6% followed by pharmacological intervention (29.6%), bed-wetting alarm (6.8%), exercises to strengthen the bladder muscles (6.2%) and surgical intervention reported by 1.5% only. It was found that the improvement of enuresis on treatment occurred in 43.6% of cases. There was a significant reduction of the prevalence of NE with age (peak is 63.6% in 5-7 years old) but no significant correlation was found with gender (p = 0.104). However, there was a significant correlation with parent having history of NE (p = 0.001). Conclusion The study reported that 31.2% of children found to have nocturnal enuresis; 43.9% of those had nocturnal enuresis alone. There were no significant correlations between nocturnal enuresis and child gender while it significantly correlated with child's age and having a family history of NE. Behavioral modification therapy was the most commonly provided treatment followed by pharmacological intervention; improvement occurred in less than half of the cases with treatment.

More anxious or more shy? Examining the social anxiety levels of adolescents with primary enuresis nocturna: a controlled study

INTRODUCTION

Enuresis nocturna (EN) is very common worldwide, and psychiatric disorders are 1.3-4.5 times higher in children with EN. When the authors focus on symptoms of individuals with EN, they figured out that the individuals were impaired in social and emotional skills because of the dramatic consequences of EN. The authors presume that, despite a lack of psychiatric comorbidity, primary enuresis nocturna (PEN) itself and its consequences may increase adolescents' social anxiety (SA), leading to adulthood mental diseases.

OBJECTIVE

In this study, the authors aimed to investigate the presence of SA of adolescents with monosymptomatic PEN without any psychiatric comorbidity by comparing them with their healthy peers.

METHODS

The study was composed of 56 children who applied to pediatric nephrology outpatient clinic and were diagnosed with monosymptomatic PEN and 42 healthy controls. The psychiatric diagnoses were made by a child psychiatrist, with the help of a semistructured interview (Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia-Present and Lifetime Version, K-SADS-PL), and patients were required to fill out the Screen for Child Anxiety and Related Disorders, Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents (SAS-A), and Children's Depression Inventory (CDI) scales with the help of a clinical psychologist. The physical examination made by a pediatric nephrologist and dysfunctional voiding and incontinence scoring system questionnaire were used to evaluate the voiding dysfunction in children.

RESULTS

There was no significant difference in the total depression and anxiety scores between the groups (p > 0.05). There was a significant difference between the two groups in the subscale of SA (t = 2.67 p = 0.009) (Table). Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents (p < 0.001) and subscales of SAS-A (Fear of Negative Evaluation [p < 0.001], General Social Avoidance and Distress [p = 0.003], Social Avoidance and Distress in New Situations [p < 0.001]) scores were significantly higher in the patient group.

DISCUSSION

The authors want to emphasize the comorbid SA of adolescents diagnosed with PEN. This anxiety may disturb adolescents' health in two ways: first, with the help of direct consequences of the SA and second, being late for seeking help for the EN and possible delay in EN treatments. The main limitation of this study is the assessments of the prior mental status of subjects were made by K-SADS-PL, thus remaining a recall bias. A follow-up study may be more objective.

CONCLUSION

So all adolescents diagnosed with PEN should require a detailed mental examination to prevent further negative consequences and provide more comprehensive treatment. Also, the study needed to be repeated in larger samples, and prospective studies should be designed to enhance authors' understanding.

A Possible Pathogenic Linkage Among Headache, Migraine, and Nocturnal Enuresis in Children

Purpose

This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of headaches and migraine in children with nocturnal enuresis (NE) and to improve knowledge on these conditions. In particular, for this purpose, a possible pathogenic relationship linking both conditions and the impact of headaches and migraine on NE persistence was evaluated.

Methods

Researchers enrolled 123 children with NE, aged between 5 and 15 years, referred to the Service of Pediatrics, Campus Bio-Medico University Hospital of Rome between January 2014 and January 2015. Parents of all children enrolled in the study were invited to complete a self-reported questionnaire. The study protocol was approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee of Campus-Bio-Medico University. The NE group data was compared with the data of a control group (107 children).

Results

Of the eligible patients, 7.8% suffer from headaches/migraine (mean age, 9.63 years; interquartile range [IQR], 3.5 years) and 47.1% have a family history of headaches (mean age, 8.46 years; IQR, 3.75 years). Of the 8 patients with headaches, all are male, 3 have tension-type headaches (2 of them have maternal family history) and 5 have migraine (3 of them have maternal family history). Of the 35.3% with a migraine family history (mean age, 8.36 years; IQR, 3.5 years), 22 are male, and 14 are female. Three of these patients have migraine. A total of 92.2% suffer from NE but not from headaches (mean age, 8.43 years; IQR, 3 years). Of these patients, 33 are female (35.1%), and 61 are male (64.9%). In the control group, 4.7% (5 out of 107) of the children suffer from headaches, and of these, 4 are affected by nonmigraine headaches and 1 by migraine.

Conclusions

In conclusion, according to the hypothesis, NE and headaches/migraine could be linked by several similarities.

Enuresis Nocturna in children with asthma: prevalence and associated risk factors

Background

Enuresis Nocturna (EN) is a common disorders in childhood. Although many different underlying pathophysiological mechanisms have been proposed to explain EN, its etiology is multifactorial. Some reports demonstrate that there is an association between EN and allergic diseases.

To study (1) the prevalence of EN in children with asthma, (2) to determine the possible risk factors for EN in asthmatic children.

Methods

Five hundreds and six children aged 6–14 years-old diagnosed with asthma and 380 age-matched non-asthmatic controls were enrolled into this cross-sectional case–control study. We studied an allergy panel that included skin prick tests with (8 inhalant allergens), total IgE, and blood eosinophil count for both groups. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the parents of children presenting EN. Factors associated with EN in children with asthma were analyzed using a logistic regression model.

Results

The prevalence of EN was significantly higher in children with asthma as compared to the controls: 132 (26 %), 43 (11.5 %) respectively (p = 0.001). Emergency visits frequency, and family history of enuresis were higher in the asthmatic children with EN than in asthmatic children without EN. According to the logistic regression analysis, positive pollen sensitization (p = 0.027, OR = 1.94), allergic rhinitis (p = 0.032, OR = 2.36), and high eosinophil count (p = 0.004, OR = 1.40) were independent risk factors for EN in children with asthma.

Conclusion

This study showed that the prevalence of EN in children with asthma was higher than in same age controls. Sensitization to pollens, allergic rhinitis and high blood eosinophil count associate to the EN in children with asthma.

Prevalence of nocturnal enuresis and its influence on quality of life in school-aged children

OBJECTIVE

According to the ICCS definitions, enuresis is defined by an intermittent, wetting during sleep after organic causes have been ruled out with a minimum wetting frequency of once per month. Previous studies reported a prevalence rate of 9-12%. Eighty to 90% of enuresis cases are identified as primary enuresis and are based on genetic predisposition, biological and developmental factors. On the other hand, secondary enuresis frequently arises from psychological factors. In this study we aimed to determine the prevalence and associated factors of nocturnal enuresis (NE) among primary school children.

METHOD

We initiated a prospective cross-sectional epidemiological study from January 2013 to May 2013 by sending a questionnaire to parents of 4250 school children, aged 6-13 years. The questionnaire consisted of three parts. The first part investigated the demographic characteristics of the child and family, such as age, gender, number of siblings, and enuresis history of the parents and siblings. The second part consisted of questions about the presence and frequency of bedwetting, presence of constipation/fecal incontinence, and presence of daytime incontinence (DI). The last part surveyed school performance and the effect of enuresis on quality of life of parents and children. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine the significant predictive factors for NE.

RESULTS

The overall prevalence of enuresis was 9.52%. The prevalence of NE among boys and girls was 12.4% and 6.5%, respectively. Daytime incontinence was present in 18% of children. Of enuretic children, 59.2% had a positive family history of enuresis. Constipation was found in 13.2% of children with enuresis and there was no significant association between NE and the presence of constipation. In addition, 48% of enuretic children had poor school performance.

CONCLUSIONS

The current study demonstrated that age, male gender, parents' history of enuresis, and siblings' history of enuresis were significant predictive factors for NE. The majority of the parents did not have adequate interest in enuretic children and most of the children were not treated. Physicians should inform parents of enuretic children with the aim of solving this problem to prevent future issues and development of adulthood lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS).

Association of Sleep Disordered Breathing with Mono-Symptomatic Nocturnal Enuresis: A Study among School Children of Central India

OBJECTIVE

To study the prevalence of primary monosymptopomatic nocturnal enuresis (PMNE) in children aged 5-10 year and to find its association with sleep disordered breathing (SDB) by using a 22 item pediatric sleep related breathing disorder (SRBD) scale.

METHODS

This was a school based cross sectional epidemiological study from July 2015 to November 2015. A questionnaire seeking information on socio-demographic variables, nocturnal enuresis (NE) frequency, school performance and a validated 22 item pediatric sleep related breathing disorder scale (SRBDs) was distributed to 1820 pupils in three primary schools.

RESULTS

A total of 1528(83.95%) questionnaires were retrieved. Out of 1528 forms, 182(11.9%) forms were incomplete for requested information and hence 1346 (73.9%) questionnaires were finally analyzed. The prevalence of NE was found to be 12.7% (95% CI; 11-14.6), whereas prevalence of primary nocturnal enuresis (PMNE) was 8.2% (95% CI; 7.1-10.1). SRBD scale score >0.33 (adjusted OR: 2.87; 95%CI: 1.67-4.92), paternal history of enuresis in childhood (adjusted OR:4.96; 95% CI: 2.36-10.45), and inappropriate toilet training (adjusted OR: 1.64; 95% CI: 1.01-2.66) were independently associated with PMNE.

CONCLUSION

Sleep disordered breathing, inappropriate toilet training and a history of childhood NE in father were found to be significant risk factors for PMNE in the present study. Thus, these findings suggest that it is imperative to rule out SDB in PMNE patients as they may require different therapeutic interventions.

Sex differences in the brain: a whole body perspective

Most writing on sexual differentiation of the mammalian brain (including our own) considers just two organs: the gonads and the brain. This perspective, which leaves out all other body parts, misleads us in several ways. First, there is accumulating evidence that all organs are sexually differentiated, and that sex differences in peripheral organs affect the brain. We demonstrate this by reviewing examples involving sex differences in muscles, adipose tissue, the liver, immune system, gut, kidneys, bladder, and placenta that affect the nervous system and behavior. The second consequence of ignoring other organs when considering neural sex differences is that we are likely to miss the fact that some brain sex differences develop to compensate for differences in the internal environment (i.e., because male and female brains operate in different bodies, sex differences are required to make output/function more similar in the two sexes). We also consider evidence that sex differences in sensory systems cause male and female brains to perceive different information about the world; the two sexes are also perceived by the world differently and therefore exposed to differences in experience via treatment by others. Although the topic of sex differences in the brain is often seen as much more emotionally charged than studies of sex differences in other organs, the dichotomy is largely false. By putting the brain firmly back in the body, sex differences in the brain are predictable and can be more completely understood.

Nocturnal Enuresis among Nigerian Children and its Association with Sleep, Behavior and School Performance

OBJECTIVE

To study the association of nocturnal enuresis with sleep, behavior and school performance.

METHODS

Hospital-based, cross-sectional descriptive study of 216 children (?6-year-old) using structured questionnaire and behavioral tools.

SETTING

Two hospitals at Lucknow in Northern India.

RESULTS

Prevalence of enuresis was 37.0%. Nocturnal enuresis was significantly associated with abnormal behaviour (P=0.049) and poor sleep hygiene (P%0.05). School performance was not associated with enuresis.

CONCLUSION

Children with nocturnal enuresis were at an increased risk of behavioral problems and poor sleep hygiene.

Desmopressin, Imipramine, and Oxybutynin in the Treatment of Primary Nocturnal Enuresis: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Background:

Nocturnal enuresis is the most common pediatric urologic problem in outpatient clinics.

Objectives:

To assess the effect of various monotherapies, and comparing the effects of desmopressin, imipramine, and oxybutynin in children with enuresis, as well as the influence of socioeconomic and cultural factors of their families on the response and relapse rates.

Patients and Methods:

The study was a randomized clinical trial conducted on 92 children aged 5 - 14 years, referred to the pediatric clinic of Semnan University Hospital in Semnan, Iran. Children with primary nocturnal enuresis were randomly allocated to three different treatment groups: desmopressin (n = 30), imipramine (n = 31), and oxybutynin (n = 31) all for 6 weeks. The socioeconomic and demographic characteristics of all participants were recorded. The number of wet nights per week was noted at the end of the 6-week-trial, and children were followed up to three months for relapse.

Results:

Children in the oxybutynin group showed a slightly higher response rate (71.0% success) and a lower relapse rate (31.8%), while in the desmopressin group the response and relapse rates were 63.3% and 57.9%, respectively, and in the imipramine group 61.3% and 63.2%, respectively. However, the difference between the 3 groups in terms of response (P = 0.701) and relapse rates (P = 0.095) was not statistically significant.

Conclusions:

There is no significant difference between monotherapy with desmopressin, imipramine or oxybutynin in children with enuresis. However, oxybutynin showed a higher response rate and a lower relapse rate compared to other medications. More clinical trials with a larger sample size are needed to clarify these uncertainties.

The Prevalence and Sociodemographic Risk Factors of Enuresis Nocturna among Elementary School-age Children

Introduction and Aim:

Many etiological reasons are blamed for enuresis nocturna (EN). The aim of this study was to research prevalence and severity of EN among elementary school-age children and sociodemographic risk factors related to it.

Materials and Methods:

The study was performed in three elementary schools in Ankara, Turkey between January and May 2011. It was planned to have 2500 students of 6–14 ages in the study. The questionnaire, which consisted of questions, aiming to evaluate the EN condition of participants and their characteristics, were distributed to the parents. It was observed that 2314 participants’ questionnaires (92.56%) were in accordance with evaluation criteria.

Statistical Analysis:

The relation between EN and the sociodemographic factors was evaluated through Chi-square test and logistic regression analysis.

Results:

The mean age of 2314 participants was 9.21 ± 2.08. 48.5% (n = 1123) of the students were male and 51.5% (n = 1191) were female. While the general EN prevalence was 9.9% (n = 230); 10.7% (n = 120) for males, as 9.2% (n = 110) for females. Statistical significant difference was determined between the two groups, with EN and without EN, regarding age groups (P < 0.001), education level of parents (P < 0.001, P < 0.001), and the number of sibling (P = 0.002), income level (P < 0.001), and positive family history (P < 0.001). However, logistic regression analysis revealed that there was a significant difference only between EN and age groups (odds ratio [OR] =4.42, P < 0.001), education level of mother (OR = 2.13, P = 0.017) and family history (OR = 0.12, P < 0.001).

Conclusions:

As a consequence, such factors as age groups, education level of parents, positive family history could be accepted as a risk of concerning EN. It is important to perform a detailed evaluation on population, carrying risk of having EN.

Prevalence of nocturnal enuresis and its associated factors in primary school and preschool children of khorramabad in 2013

Background. Nocturnal enuresis refers to an inability to control urination during sleep. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of nocturnal enuresis and its associated factors in children in the city of Khorramabad. Materials and Methods. In this descriptive-analytic, cross-sectional study, 710 male and female children were divided into two groups with equal numbers. The samples were selected from the schools of Khorramabad using the multistage cluster and stratified random sampling methods based on the diagnostic criteria of DSM-IV. The data was analyzed using the logistic regression. Results. The results showed that 8% of the children had nocturnal enuresis, including 5.2% of primary nocturnal enuresis and 2.8% of secondary nocturnal enuresis. The prevalence of nocturnal enuresis in the boys (10.7%) was higher compared with that in the girls (5.4%) (P = 0.009). There were statistically significant relationships between nocturnal enuresis and history of nocturnal enuresis in siblings (P = 0.023), respiratory infections (P = 0.036), deep sleep (P = 0.007), corporal punishment at school (P = 0.036), anal itching (P = 0.043), and history of seizures (P = 0.043). Conclusion. This study showed that the prevalence of nocturnal enuresis in the boys was higher compared with that in the girls.

Mono-symptomatic nocturnal enuresis in lebanese children: prevalence, relation with obesity, and psychological effect

INTRODUCTION

Nocturnal enuresis is involuntary urination while sleeping after a certain age, usually five years, when children should have established bladder control. The prevalence has been found to be up to 20% in five year old children, and it is considered the most common urological childhood complication.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

This study was conducted on Makassed School children aged 5–18 years. This was a two-step study, the first step was a questionnaire distributed to the children to be answered by their parents. The second step included individually meeting with every child who met the inclusion criteria and his/her parents and physically examining the child.

RESULTS

11,440 questionnaires were distributed to school children aged 5–18 years, to be answered by their parents. Of the 7270 parents who responded back, 6620 reported no enuresis, 90 (1.25%) reported only diurnal enuresis, 107 (1.5%) reported diurnal and nocturnal enuresis, and 453 parents reported their child having nocturnal enuresis only. The data collected was analyzed according to age, sex, area, body mass index (BMI), and the PMQOL-SF score. The prevalence of mono-symptomatic nocturnal enuresis (MNE) in Lebanon was found to be 5.3%. The results showed that the prevalence of MNE is inversely proportional to age. The prevalence of male to female ratio was 1.4:1. As for the prevalence according to different geographic areas, the results have shown that the North had the majority of cases with 7.6% prevalence. Results showed that 82.4% of children had a score more than 50, and only 28% of parents had a score above 50.

DISCUSSION

The prevalence of nocturnal enuresis in Lebanon is lower than that in neighboring countries such as Turkey8 and Saudi Arabia,9 but higher than that in Italy10 and Hong Kong. Our study has managed to show the same results, with a peak in incidence at seven years then dropping back to 0% at the age of 16. Our study has shown a male to female predominance but the male to female ratio was 1.4:1, a value lower than that described in earlier studies. Our study has shown that more than 80% of children were psychologically affected whereas only less than 30% of parents were affected.

CONCLUSION

To our knowledge, this was the first study in Lebanon conducted to determine the prevalence of MNE. The relatively low prevalence rate found may be because of differences in genetic predisposition, psychosocial or environmental conditions, and traditional and cultural backgrounds. No relation was found between obesity and nocturnal enuresis. The psychological impact on children is significant but that on the parents is minimal.

Parent and physician perspectives on the treatment of primary nocturnal enuresis in Korea

Purpose

Parental decisions about the treatment of nocturnal enuresis (NE) are generally based on silent agreement with a physician's recommendation. However, physicians may have an insufficient understanding about parents' concerns and expectations regarding treatment. The aim of this study was to clarify the discrepancies between the perceptions of parents and physicians and to better understand the attitudes related to NE treatment.

Materials and Methods

A survey was conducted in six centers and included 105 parents and 102 physicians. Two questionnaires, one for parents and another for physicians, were prepared. Each contained items on demographic characteristics, concerns, and NE treatment preferences. The parents completed the questionnaire during their child's first clinical visit, and the physicians completed the questionnaire via e-mail or individual interviews.

Results

Low self-esteem was the most common concern among both parents and physicians. Parents showed a more serious concern regarding disease progression and sequelae than did physicians. In the parent group, parents of younger children were mainly concerned about growth, whereas parents of children with daytime symptoms were mainly concerned about disease progression and relationships. Treatment outcome preferences differed significantly between the two groups. Physicians preferred treatments yielding immediate results, whereas parents preferred long-term treatments that would result in low recurrence.

Conclusions

This survey presents the differences between parents and physicians regarding NE concerns and therapeutic preferences. Our study may provide valuable insight for physicians regarding parental attitudes toward NE treatment.
