Abstract
BACKGROUND Music therapy, aromatherapy and massage therapy are widely used in palliative care in patients near end-of-life with the aim to reduce symptom burden and improve quality of life (QoL). Recent research shows an increase in popularity and use of complementary and integrative medicine however a more thorough evidence base about their usefulness is required. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate the available evidence on the use of music therapy, aromatherapy and massage therapy in palliative and hospice care and summarize findings. METHODS A defined search strategy was used in reviewing literature from two major databases, MEDLINE and Embase for the period between 2010 and 2022. Studies were selected for further evaluation based on intervention type and relevancy. After evaluation using quality assessment tools, findings were summarised, and potential benefits were identified. RESULTS Out of 1261 studies initially identified, 26 were selected for further evaluation. 16 evaluated music therapy, 4 aromatherapy and massage therapy. The most represented outcomes were pain, anxiety, well-being and QoL. Many studies demonstrated a short-term benefit in symptom improvement. Qualitative studies showed that these complementary methods are highly valued. CONCLUSION Main results found that music and massage therapy had the most potential benefits on a range of outcome parameters, including pain and QoL. Future studies may consider using more qualitative and/or mixed methods to provide a more comprehensive evaluation of treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study was conducted to investigate the effect of music on anxiety, pain, and physiologic parameters in women undergoing brachytherapy. DATA SOURCES The study was conducted with a randomized controlled design between June and December 2022. Music intervention was practiced to the patients in the experimental group (n = 30), while no practice was given to the control group (n = 25). In the study, the data were collected using the Descriptive Information Form, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, visual analog scale, and vital signs (temperature, pulse rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, SpO2) recording form. Intergroup and intragroup averages were evaluated by the mixed-design analysis of variance. Variables with pre-post intervention designs were evaluated with the one-way analysis of covariance. There was no significant difference in physiological parameters between the groups (P > . 05). Although the mean anxiety scores decreased in the music group and increased in the control group, there was no statistically significant difference (P > .05). A significant difference was found in the pain levels of the patients in repeated measurements made in intragroup evaluations (P < .001). The depression mean of the music intervention group was significantly lower than the control group (P ≤ .05). CONCLUSION It was concluded that the music played during the brachytherapy process had positive effects on feeling less pain and management of depressive symptoms but did not affect anxiety and physiological parameters. Since each patient is different, the effects of music therapy can vary individually. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE Nurses should apply different strategies to investigate session frequencies and durations for different patient groups and treatment stages in cancer care.

Abstract
Background Palliative care patients desire more symptom management interventions that are complementary to their medical treatment. Within the multi-professional team, nurses could help support pain management with non-pharmacological interventions feasible for their practice and adaptable to palliative care patients' needs. Objectives The objective was to identify non-pharmacological interventions feasible in the nursing scope of practice affecting pain in palliative care patients. Design A systematic review. Data sources and methods A defined search strategy was used in PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Embase. Search results were screened double-blinded. Methodological quality was double-appraised with the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Tools. Data were extracted from selected studies and the findings were summarized. The methodological quality, quantity of studies evaluating the same intervention, and consistency in the findings were synthesized in a best-evidence synthesis to rank evidence as strong, moderate, limited, mixed, or insufficient. Results Out of 2385 articles, 22 studies highlighted non-pharmacological interventions in the nursing scope of practice. Interventions using massage therapy and virtual reality demonstrated most evidentiary support for pain management, while art therapy lacked sufficient evidence. Mindful breathing intervention showed no significant reduction in pain. Hypnosis, progressive muscle-relaxation-interactive-guided imagery, cognitive-behavioral audiotapes, wrapped warm footbath, reflexology, and music therapy exhibited promising results in pain reduction, whereas mindfulness-based stress reduction program, aromatherapy, and aroma-massage therapy did not. Conclusion Despite not all studies reaching significant changes in pain scores, non-pharmacological interventions can be clinically relevant to palliative care patients. Its use should be discussed for its potential value and nurses to be trained for safe practice. Methodologically rigorous research for non-pharmacological interventions in nursing scope of practice for pain relief in palliative care patients is necessary. Trial registration The protocol for this study is registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Review (PROSPERO registration number: CRD42020196781).

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Music therapy has been proven as a safe and well-established intervention in healthcare to relieve symptoms and improve quality of life. While music therapy is already established in several settings to supplement medical care, there is a lack of integration in the field of medical education. METHODS We report on the implementation and evaluation of a teaching concept for a five-day-intensive-course on music therapy. The course was offered as an elective course for medical students at the University Duisburg-Essen. At the end of the course, students filled out a free text questionnaire to assess the students' perception of the course, and additionally answered standardized questions by the structured EVALuna online evaluation tool of the University of Duisburg-Essen. RESULTS All students (N = 35) who participated in the music therapy course between September 2019 and March 2023 completed the questionnaires and N = 21 students filled out the EVALuna. Most students (89%) chose the course because of their interest in alternative and supportive therapy options to improve patients' well-being. About 46% had previous musical experience and passion and fun with music and 37% of the students were interested in the interdisciplinary academic subject that combined music and medicine. EVALuna online evaluation reflected high satisfaction with the course. CONCLUSION Due to the well-proven effectiveness and evidence of music therapy as well as the positive perception of medical students, music therapy should be further established in medical care and medical education.

Abstract
PURPOSE Music may be an effective therapeutic tool during cancer treatment to improve patient psychological and physical well-being. Current research shows a positive effect of music on psychological outcomes; however, many of these studies lacked significant sample size and rigor in monitoring type of music used and duration of music use during treatment. METHODS Participants (N = 750) in this open-label, multisite, day-based permuted block randomization study were adult patients receiving outpatient chemotherapy infusion. Patients were randomly assigned to either music (listen to music for up to 60 minutes) or control (no music) conditions. Music patients were allowed to self-select an iPod shuffle programmed with up to 500 minutes of music from a single genre (eg, Motown, 60s, 70s, 80s, classical, and country). Outcomes were self-reported change in pain, positive and negative mood, and distress. RESULTS Patients who listened to self-selected music during infusion showed significant benefit in improved positive mood and reduced negative mood and distress (but not pain) from pre- to post-intervention (all two-sample t-tests P < .05). LASSO penalized linear regression models showed a selective benefit for some patients on the basis of relationship (P = .032) and employment (P = .029) status with those who were married or widowed and those on disability showing better outcomes. CONCLUSION Music medicine is a low-touch, low-risk, and cost-effective way to manage patients' psychological well-being in the often stressful context of a cancer infusion clinic. Future research should be directed to understanding what other factors may mitigate negative mood states and pain for certain groups during treatment.

Abstract
Pain is subjective, warranting tailored responses in pharmacotherapy and nursing support. Despite this, the evidence for suitable nursing support for pain is not well established in terminally ill patients such as those with cancer; therefore, it is necessary to provide support in consideration of changes in physical symptoms and quality of life. However, interventional studies for such patients are often difficult. There have been no comprehensive studies to date on non-pharmacological support that can be implemented by nurses. Therefore, with the aim of examining nursing support applicable at the end of life, this scoping review comprehensively mapped nursing support for pain in cancer patients at all stages of the disease. This study complies with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement and the Arksey and O'Malley framework. All available published articles from the time of database establishment to January 31, 2022, were systematically searched for in PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), CENTRAL, and the Ichushi Web database of the Japanese Society of Medical Abstracts. Overall, 10,385 articles were screened, and 72 were finally included. Both randomized controlled trials (RCTs) (n = 62) and non-RCTs (n = 10) were included. Twenty-two types of nursing support were identified. Eighteen of them showed positive results; five of them were provided only to terminally ill patients, three of which were effective, namely, comfort care, foot bath, and combined therapy. It is important to examine the applicability of types of nursing support in clinical practice in the future.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to determine whether a combined music pharmacological intervention was an effective multimodal approach to reduce adult pain in the postanesthesia care unit (PACU). DESIGN A prospective, randomized control trial study. METHODS Participants were recruited in the preoperative holding area on the day of surgery by the principal investigators. Music was selected by the patient following the informed consent process. Participants were randomized either to the intervention group or the control group. Patients in the intervention group received music in addition to standard pharmacological protocol while the control group received only the standard pharmacological protocol. Measured outcomes were change in visual analog pain scores and length of stay. FINDINGS In this cohort (N = 134), 68 participants (50.7%) received the intervention, and 66 participants (49.3%) were in the control group. Paired t tests showed that pain scores for the control group worsened by an average of 1.45-points (95% CI: 0.75, 2.15; P < .001) compared to 0.34-points in the intervention group and was not significant (P = .314) as scores went from 1 out of 10 to 1.4 out of 10. Both control and intervention groups experienced pain, with the control group's overall pain scores worsening over time. This finding was statistically significant (P = .023). No statistically significant difference was noted in the average PACU length of stay (LOS). CONCLUSIONS The addition of music to the standard postoperative pain protocol demonstrated a lower average pain score on discharge from the PACU. The absence of a difference in LOS may be due to the confounding variables (eg, general versus spinal anesthesia or a difference in voiding time).

Abstract
AIM Cancer remains a disease with a significant impact on morbidity and mortality but also on quality of life. This prospective randomized pilot study investigated the effects of a sound intervention on physical and emotional well-being in outpatients with cancer. METHODS Two self-applied sound interventions were used for this purpose, either active "music playing" with a body monochord or passive sound intervention with headphones to listen to a given music compilation. Interventions were carried out over a period of 4 weeks for at least 15 min in the evening before bedtime. The following self-assessment questionnaires were completed both at baseline and after 4 weeks to evaluate the response: the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Quality of Life Questionnaire (QLQ-C30), Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for pain and fatigue, and the Fear of Progression (FoP) questionnaire. Primary endpoint of this exploratory trial was to describe the rate of patients with improvement in at least one dimension without worsening of any other. RESULTS 73 patients (29 male, 44 female) were included in the study and randomized to either active (n = 34, 47%) or passive sound intervention (n = 39, 53%). Median age was 52.0 years (range 21-79). Fourteen patients (19%) stated that they were musically active. The sound intervention was carried out on a median of 26 days (range 5-28). A higher percentage of patients in the passive group reached the primary endpoint: n = 15 (39%) versus n = 9 (27%). Response differences in favour of the passive group were seen with the VAS fatigue and with QLQ-30 questionnaires. Overall, an improvement in QLQ-30 questionnaire was seen in 12 patients (31%) in the passive group versus 3 patients (9%). Moreover, sound intervention significantly improved social functioning and shortness of breath in the passive group according to QLQ-C30. Significant improvements were also noticed in the passive group in terms of affective reactions as a domain of the FoP questionnaire. No effects on pain or sleep quality could be observed. CONCLUSION A 4-week self-administered sound intervention was feasible in outpatients suffering from cancer. Using a panel of 5 questionnaires, passive sound interventions appeared to be more likely to positively influence patient-reported outcomes. In particular, a positive impact was documented in social functioning and fatigue.

Abstract
Background Postembolization syndrome (PES), including abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting, are complications most severe on the first day after transarterial chemoembolization (TACE). Music therapy has been found to help manage pain. If pain, a cause of nausea and vomiting, can be relieved, then nausea and vomiting should also be reduced. Objectives This study aimed to examine the effect of music therapy on PES in patients with liver cancer after receiving TACE. Methods This study employed a quasi-experimental crossover design. The study was conducted at the inpatient units of a specialized hospital for cancer in Bangkok, Thailand, from March 2020 to October 2021. Thirty patients with liver cancer were purposively selected based on the pre-determined criteria. A change-over design was used to compare patients' changes in abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting from the experimental period to the other control period. During the experimental period, music therapy was administered for 30 minutes on Day 0 after TACE, then twice a day in the morning and evening of Days 1 and 2 after TACE, and in the morning of Day 3 after TACE. During the control period, the patients used silent headphones. Data were analyzed using Wilcoxon signed ranks and Friedman tests. Results The participants perceived abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting at a mild level during all periods. Pain scores in the music therapy period were significantly lower than those in the control period on Days 0, 1, and 2 after TACE (p <0.001, p <0.01, and p <0.001, respectively) and lower than at the baseline (p <0.001). There were no statistically significant differences in nausea and vomiting scores between the music therapy period and the control period on Days 0, 1, and 2 after TACE and no statistically significant differences at the baseline. Conclusion Music therapy effectively reduces mild pain among patients with liver cancer experiencing PES. This therapy can be used as a non-pharmacological treatment for nurses and other healthcare professionals in caring for patients with liver cancer.

Abstract
Pain is often debilitating, and is associated with many pathologies, as either a cause or consequence. Pharmacological interventions, such as opioids, to manage pain may lead to potential problems, such as addiction. When pain is controlled and managed, it can prevent negative associated outcomes affiliated with disease. Music is a low-cost option that shows promise in the management of painful circumstances. Music therapy has provided potent options for pain relief across a variety of ages and populations. As a nonpharmacological alternative or complement lacking side effects, music interventions are growing in clinical application and research protocols. This article considers the neurological implications of varying kinds of pain to provide working considerations that preempt the use of music and music-therapy applications in treating pain.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This research has been conducted to determine the effect of music on pain and anxiety levels of patients receiving chemotherapy during COVID-19. METHODS The research has been carried out in a real trial model with 92 adult patients (45 in the experimental group who received chemotherapy and 47 in the control group). The data have been collected by the researcher with Google Forms (using State and Trait Anxiety Inventory [STAI] and visual analogue scale [VAS]) through the links sent to the phones of participants on the day they received chemotherapy, between March 2020 and July 2020. RESULTS The mean scores obtained from the post-test STAI (53.11 ± 4.77) and VAS (3.44 ± 2.53) in the experimental group have been determined to statistically significantly decrease when compared to the pre-test measurement data (STAI: 54.26 ± 4.26; VAS: 4.22 ± 2.41) (p < 0.05). No statistically significant difference has been determined between pre-test and post-test mean scores of the patients in the control group. CONCLUSION It has been observed that music applications reduce the pain and anxiety levels of patients receiving chemotherapy during the COVID-19 process. It can be recommended to use music applications in the management of pain and anxiety symptoms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-pharmacological interventions such as music are being increasingly used in clinical settings. OBJECTIVE To assess the effects of music on patients undergoing total knee replacement (TKR) surgery under subarachnoid anesthesia. METHODS This randomized controlled trial examined participants (45/group) in a music and non-music group. Anxiety was measured in both the groups using (1) the adapted hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS), (2) Spielberger state trait anxiety inventory (STAI-S), (3) visual analog scale (VAS), (4) cortisol levels, and (5) blood pressure. Music was delivered using an MP3 player and headphones. Hemodynamic data was collected before, during, and after music therapy. Cortisol and stress levels were measured postoperatively. VAS was assessed 30 min before surgery, 30 min after the administration of anesthesia, and 30 min after the surgery ended in the recovery room to obtain comparative data on pain levels at 3 different phases using a numeric rating scale. RESULTS Changes in the mean VAS scores from the pre-to postoperative phase were significantly different between the music and non-music groups (p = .001). The mean (±standard deviation [SD]) HADS and STAI-S scores of the non-music group were higher than those in the music group (HADS:15.58 ± 2.231 vs 11.91 ± 3.218; STAI-S: 54.04 ± 2.899 vs 48.87 ± 4.595). There were significant differences in the mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure and mean heart rate between the groups based on time (both, p < .001). Correlation regression analysis for the cortisol level revealed a certain relationship between age and cortisol level (p < .05). CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that music can reduce patients' anxiety level in the operating room. Studies on music therapy for patients undergoing lower limb orthopedic surgery, especially under subarachnoid anesthesia, are extremely limited. Therefore, this study can serve as a reference regarding the application of music therapy in the medical field.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the influence of music together with visual objects as an ambiance in the waiting room on anxiety levels of breast cancer patients scheduled to receive chemotherapy in outpatient setting for the first time. MATERIAL AND METHOD Breast cancer patients planned to receive adjuvant or neoadjuvant chemotherapy for the first time between November 1, 2020, and July 31, 2021, were included. Two designs, including a standard waiting room (StWR) and an intervention waiting room (IWR) that was created by adding music and visual objects to the standard room, were constructed. These 2 designs were repeated sequentially in monthly periods, and a total of 104 patients with 52 in each group were randomized. The State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADs) were used for assessments. Results of the patients in StWR and IWR groups were compared. RESULTS Both HADs anxiety and STAI-state anxiety scale scores were lower in patients who waited in IWR compared to those who waited in StWR (p = 0.041, p = 0.012, respectively). In patients in the IWR group, mean heart rate was lower by 7.6 bpm (p = 0.009). No difference was found between the groups with regard to HADs depression score and STAI-trait anxiety score (p = 0.305, p = 0.535, respectively). For all patients, HADs anxiety scale (r = 0.400, p = < 0.001) and STAI-state anxiety scale (r = 0.475, p = < 0.001) scores increased as the waiting time increased. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION The present study is the first to investigate the influence of adding music together with visual objects to the standard ambiance of the chemotherapy waiting room on anxiety levels of breast cancer patients. We propose that introduction of paintings, artificial plants, and music to the ambiance of the waiting room has a significantly positive effect on alleviating anxiety levels of cancer patients waiting for chemotherapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This is an update of the review published on the Cochrane Library in 2016, Issue 8. Having cancer may result in extensive emotional, physical and social suffering. Music interventions have been used to alleviate symptoms and treatment side effects in people with cancer. This review includes music interventions defined as music therapy offered by trained music therapists, as well as music medicine, which was defined as listening to pre-recorded music offered by medical staff. OBJECTIVES To assess and compare the effects of music therapy and music medicine interventions for psychological and physical outcomes in people with cancer. SEARCH METHODS We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL; 2020, Issue 3) in the Cochrane Library, MEDLINE via Ovid, Embase via Ovid, CINAHL, PsycINFO, LILACS, Science Citation Index, CancerLit, CAIRSS, Proquest Digital Dissertations, ClinicalTrials.gov, Current Controlled Trials, the RILM Abstracts of Music Literature, http://www.wfmt.info/Musictherapyworld/ and the National Research Register. We searched all databases, except for the last two, from their inception to April 2020; the other two are no longer functional, so we searched them until their termination date. We handsearched music therapy journals, reviewed reference lists and contacted experts. There was no language restriction. SELECTION CRITERIA We included all randomized and quasi-randomized controlled trials of music interventions for improving psychological and physical outcomes in adults and pediatric patients with cancer. We excluded patients undergoing biopsy and aspiration for diagnostic purposes. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Two review authors independently extracted the data and assessed the risk of bias. Where possible, we presented results in meta-analyses using mean differences and standardized mean differences. We used post-test scores. In cases of significant baseline difference, we used change scores. We conducted separate meta-analyses for studies with adult participants and those with pediatric participants. Primary outcomes of interest included psychological outcomes and physical symptoms and secondary outcomes included physiological responses, physical functioning, anesthetic and analgesic intake, length of hospitalization, social and spiritual support, communication, and quality of life (QoL) . We used GRADE to assess the certainty of the evidence. MAIN RESULTS We identified 29 new trials for inclusion in this update. In total, the evidence of this review rests on 81 trials with a total of 5576 participants. Of the 81 trials, 74 trials included adult (N = 5306) and seven trials included pediatric (N = 270) oncology patients. We categorized 38 trials as music therapy trials and 43 as music medicine trials. The interventions were compared to standard care. Psychological outcomes The results suggest that music interventions may have a large anxiety-reducing effect in adults with cancer, with a reported average anxiety reduction of 7.73 units (17 studies, 1381 participants; 95% confidence interval (CI) -10.02 to -5.44; very low-certainty evidence) on the Spielberger State Anxiety Inventory scale (range 20 to 80; lower values reflect lower anxiety). Results also suggested a moderately strong, positive impact of music interventions on depression in adults (12 studies, 1021 participants; standardized mean difference (SMD): -0.41, 95% CI -0.67 to -0.15; very low-certainty evidence). We found no support for an effect of music interventions on mood (SMD 0.47, 95% CI -0.02 to 0.97; 5 studies, 236 participants; very low-certainty evidence). Music interventions may increase hope in adults with cancer, with a reported average increase of 3.19 units (95% CI 0.12 to 6.25) on the Herth Hope Index (range 12 to 48; higher scores reflect greater hope), but this finding was based on only two studies (N = 53 participants; very low-certainty evidence). Physical outcomes We found a moderate pain-reducing effect of music interventions (SMD -0.67, 95% CI -1.07 to -0.26; 12 studies, 632 adult participants; very low-certainty evidence). In addition, music interventions had a small treatment effect on fatigue (SMD -0.28, 95% CI -0.46 to -0.10; 10 studies, 498 adult participants; low-certainty evidence). The results suggest a large effect of music interventions on adult participants' QoL, but the results were highly inconsistent across studies, and the pooled effect size was accompanied by a large confidence interval (SMD 0.88, 95% CI -0.31 to 2.08; 7 studies, 573 participants; evidence is very uncertain). Removal of studies that used improper randomization methods resulted in a moderate effect size that was less heterogeneous (SMD 0.47, 95% CI 0.06 to 0.88, P = 0.02, I2 = 56%). A small number of trials included pediatric oncology participants. The findings suggest that music interventions may reduce anxiety but this finding was based on only two studies (SMD -0.94, 95% CI -1.9 to 0.03; very low-certainty evidence). Due to the small number of studies, we could not draw conclusions regarding the effects of music interventions on mood, depression, QoL, fatigue or pain in pediatric participants with cancer. The majority of studies included in this review update presented a high risk of bias, and therefore the overall certainty of the evidence is low. For several outcomes (i.e. anxiety, depression, pain, fatigue, and QoL) the beneficial treatment effects were consistent across studies for music therapy interventions delivered by music therapists. In contrast, music medicine interventions resulted in inconsistent treatment effects across studies for these outcomes. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS This systematic review indicates that music interventions compared to standard care may have beneficial effects on anxiety, depression, hope, pain, and fatigue in adults with cancer. The results of two trials suggest that music interventions may have a beneficial effect on anxiety in children with cancer. Too few trials with pediatric participants were included to draw conclusions about the treatment benefits of music for other outcomes. For several outcomes, music therapy interventions delivered by a trained music therapist led to consistent results across studies and this was not the case for music medicine interventions. Moreover, evidence of effect was found for music therapy interventions for QoL and fatigue but not for music medicine interventions. Most trials were at high risk of bias and low or very low certainty of evidence; therefore, these results need to be interpreted with caution.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hemodialysis patients suffer from mental disorders such as anxiety and depression. One of the known nonpharmacological methods to eliminate these disorders is music therapy. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of instrumental music on state depression and anxiety in hemodialysis patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study was a clinical trial. The population was hemodialysis patients in Hamedan in 2017 and 50 patients were selected and randomly divided into experimental and control groups. The duration each time of the instrumental music intervention for the experimental group was 3 weeks, 3 times a week for 20 min. Data were measured by beck depression inventory and SpeilBerger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-Y1 before the intervention and immediately after the last intervention and analyzed using Yates correction, Chi-square test, Mann-Whitney U-test, independent t-test, and Wilcoxon test. RESULTS No significant difference between the intervention and control groups was observed before the study in terms of demographic variables (P > 0.05). In the intervention group, the mean and standard deviation of the depression score before the intervention was 8.99 ± 23.68 and after the intervention reached 7.54 ± 14.88, which shows that the variable was significant (P = 0.001); however, no significant difference was observed in the control group. In the intervention group, the mean of state anxiety before the intervention was 10.05 ± 53.76 and after the intervention reached 9.76 ± 42.48, which was statistically significant (P = 0.004), while no significant difference was observed in the control group. CONCLUSION The results indicate the positive effect of instrumental music on reducing anxiety and depression in hemodialysis patients. It is recommended that this therapy be used as a nursing method to reduce state anxiety and depression in hemodialysis patients.

Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the complementary and traditional-spiritual practices applied by individuals diagnosed with cancer when experiencing significant pain. This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 110 patients who were receiving chemotherapy treatment in a university hospital outpatient treatment unit (Chemotherapy Unit) between 1st March and 30th June 2019. The study sample size was calculated using the 'unknown-population sample selection formula' (n = t2·p·q·/d2). Study data were collected using a patient information form comprising 13 questions about the participants' sociodemographic characteristics, diseases, and complementary practices. The data were analyzed using descriptive percentage tests and the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) software. The study found that 45.5% of the cancer patients took a walk, 38.2% listened to music, 27.3% watched movies, 24.5% received massages, 20.0% read newspapers or books, 20.0% did sports, and 10.9% dreamed in painful situations. Spiritual practices used by the patients were determined as praying (46.4%), engaging in salat (the daily ritual prayers of Islam) (30.9%) and reading religious books (23.6%). The herbal practices applied by the patients include the use of garlic, mulberry molasses, pomegranate, green tea; furthermore, herbs such as honey, sage, lime, black cumin, ginger, centaury, thyme, nettle, flaxseeds, and rosehip were also used. Most of the patients learned complementary practices from television programs (62.7%); only 8.2% learned these practices from healthcare professionals. Nurses should investigate patients' use of complementary practices and provide them with the necessary evidence-based information to prevent unconscious use of these practices. Considering that determining patients' spiritual needs and practices is seen as the first step in the holistic care of patients, it is important to satisfy cancer patients by providing necessary healthcare services and help them improve their physical and mental health.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Birth asphyxia may cause neuro-developmental impairment in the affected newborns especially those who had hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. Music therapy has been observed to help in reducing pain and stress in newborns and improve neurodevelopmental outcome. OBJECTIVES The objective of this study is to determine the effects of music therapy on the outcomes of birth asphyxia. METHODS A randomized controlled trial involving 3095 newborns born between January 2013 and August 2019 with birth asphyxia was conducted in the neonatal intensive care unit of Burdwan Medical College. They were distributed in two groups-A (received music therapy along with coventional management) and B (only received conventional management), using computer-generated randomization. Pain score was assessed during any painful procedure and the neurodevelopmental outcome was measured at 3rd, 6th, 12th, 18th and 24th months. p < 0.01 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS A total of 3095 newborns were included with a mean gestation of 34.3 ± 2.1 weeks and 56.7% of them were male. Mean hospital stay, oxygen dependency, requirement of mechanical ventilation and incidence of apnea were significantly lesser among newborns of group A. Newborns of group B showed a significantly higher mean pain score, whereas newborns in Group A exhibited significantly greater mental and motor neurodevelopmental quotients. CONCLUSIONS Music therapy was observed to help in reducing hospital stay, oxygen dependency, incidences of apnea, pain during procedures and also resulted in better neurodevelopmental outcome. However, before generalizing the findings, further multi-centric research should be undertaken.

Abstract
Psychological stress is a significant public health concern as it is associated with various comorbidities and long-term health implications. Music interventions are emerging therapies for alleviating psychological stress and improving one's physical and mental well-being. We conducted a systematic literature review in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) Statement guidelines for reporting to identify all neuroendocrine biomarkers used to evaluate psychological stress in randomized control trials involving music interventions. We identified 18 unique biomarkers of stress from 14 full-text randomized controlled trials studies. Only one of the 14 music studies included a music therapy intervention. The most frequently used biomarkers across the studies were plasma cortisol, salivary cortisol, and salivary α-amylase. Of the 14 studies, 12 included in this review assessed at least one of these three biomarkers. Of these 12 studies, five papers reported p-values for changes in both stress biomarkers and psychological stress outcome measures. Four of the five studies found significant p-values for the reduction of both stress biomarkers and psychological stress in music intervention groups. The variety of stress biomarkers used and the variance in study protocols makes it difficult to assess the magnitude of effect of music interventions on psychological stress. However, our findings suggest that music interventions have the potential for reducing both stress biomarker levels and psychological stress in acute stress situations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancer is a life-threatening condition and also one of the biggest challenges facing human health and the medical community. This meta-analysis was to investigate the effects of music intervention on physiological and psychological responses of patients with cancer. METHODS AND ANALYSIS The following electronic databases will be searched from inception to December 2020: PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure Database, Chinese Science and the Wanfang Database. We only included music intervention vs placebo in cancer patients and pooled results were summarized by STATA 12.0 software. Two investigators independently selected the studies according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, extracted the data, and assessed the quality of the selected studies. The existence of statistical heterogeneity would be evaluated by Chi2 test and its extension by the I2 test (I2 > 50% indicates high heterogeneity among studies). Publication bias was ruled out by funnel plot and statistically assessed by Begg test (P > .05 as no publication bias). RESULTS The study results will be published in relevant peer-reviewed journals and key findings will be presented at international scientific meetings. CONCLUSION Our study aims to systematically assess the effects of music intervention in cancer patients, which will be provide clinical guidance for cancer patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Music is a tool that can be used to reduce stress and anxiety, maintain vital signs at normal levels, and increase exam success. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to determine the effect of music therapy on nursing students' first objective structured clinical exam success, anxiety levels, and vital signs, and to reveal their views about music therapy in the context of an exam. DESIGN Mixed-pattern single-blind randomized controlled qualitative study. SETTING Department of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences, Ankara, Turkey. PARTICIPANTS First-year students enrolled in the Fundamentals of Nursing II course were randomly assigned to an experimental (n = 61) or control group (n = 64). Twenty-two (22) experimental group students provided the sample for the qualitative stage. METHODS Data were collected between February and June 2018 using the Informative Features Form, State-trait Anxiety Inventory, Vital Signs Assessment Form, Skill Checklists, and Focus-group Interview Form. All students completed the theoretical classes, laboratory classes, and small-group studies. The experimental group participated in five music therapy sessions two weeks before the exam. All students' vital signs were measured before and after the exam. Three focus group interviews were conducted with the 22 experimental group students in the week after the exam. RESULTS The blood pressure values of the experimental group before and after the exam were significantly lower than those of the control group (p < 0.05). No significant difference was observed between exam success and anxiety levels between the two groups. In the focus group interviews, students said they found music therapy suitable for reducing anxiety in their daily lives, but not before the exam. CONCLUSIONS Music therapy had positive effects on the students' blood pressure but had no effect on exam success or anxiety levels. This study suggests that more music therapy sessions be conducted with different groups of students in greater numbers before different exams.

Abstract
Purpose Music therapy is widely used to enhance well-being, reduce pain, and distract patients from unpleasant symptoms in the clinical setting. However, the degree to which music modulates pain perception is unknown. The medial pain pathway including the limbic system is associated with emotion, but how music alters pathway activity is unclear. The aim of the study was to investigate pain thresholds and pain-related responses in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and whether they were modulated when subjects listened to their favorite music genre. Subjects and Methods First, 30 subjects were examined for left forearm pain threshold using electrical stimulation with Pain Vision PS-2011N. The pain thresholds with and without music were compared. Second, when an 80-μA current from Pain Vision was applied to the left ankle of eight women, the pain-related responses of the ACC with and without music were observed with functional magnetic resonance device (fMRI). The changes in the pain-related activity in both parameters were discussed. Results The median pain threshold with favorite music was 38.9 μA, compared to 29.0 μA without, which was significantly different (p<0.0001). The men’s thresholds were significantly higher than women’s both with music (p<0.05) and without music (p<0.01). The pain threshold in women was more strongly affected by music than in men. The fMRI results showed that the pain-related response in the ACC in five of eight subjects was attenuated while they listened to their favorite music. No change was observed in the other three subjects. Conclusion The present findings suggest that pain perception might be strongly affected by listening to favorite music, possibly through modulation of pain-related responses in the ACC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND and purpose: The use of music is increasingly being recommended for the management of patients' pain and anxiety by healthcare providers. The purpose of this study was to examine registered nurses (RNs)' awareness, acceptability and actual use of music for the management of patients' pain and anxiety. MATERIALS AND METHODS A cross-sectional design was employed. Data were collected using a mailed questionnaire. RESULTS RNs were aware of the use of music for managing pain (4.42 ± 2.08, possible range 1-7) and anxiety (4.97 ± 1.85, possible range 1-7), and perceived use of music as low-to-moderately acceptable (mean scores ranging from 1.48 to 3.87, possible range 0-4). Further, 46% (n = 69) of RNs reported using music in their practice. CONCLUSION RNs have a moderate level of awareness and a low-to-moderate level of acceptability of music, with nearly half reporting use of music for managing patients' pain and anxiety in practice.

Abstract
Objetivo: Identificar la eficacia de los tratamientos musicoterapéuticos que aborden la sintomatología en pacientes con cáncer y que constaten algún tipo de beneficio psicológico, fisiológico, espiritual, social o intelectual. Método: Se realizó un análisis documental que supuso un estudio comparativo de evidencias científicas. Resultados: La musicoterapia minimiza los efectos fisiológicos de tratamientos específicos oncológicos como la quimioterapia, se usa como complemento de la morfina o el sufentanilo disminuyendo el dolor e influye en la vida emocional del paciente. Conclusiones: Es una disciplina que demuestra evidencias positivas en situaciones de tipo emocional reduciendo la depresión, la ansiedad y el estrés, ayudando en la relajación y mejorando el umbral del dolor, postulándose como una opción no-farmacológica que debiera conducir a una implantación cada vez más normalizada en los centros hospitalarios.

Abstract
Background Patients with advanced cancer, receiving at-home palliative care, are subject to numerous symptoms that are changeable and often require attention, a stressful situation that also impacts on the family caregiver. It has been suggested that music therapy may benefit both the patient and the caregiver. We propose a study to analyse the efficacy and cost utility of a music intervention programme, applied as complementary therapy, for cancer patients in palliative care and for their at-home caregivers, compared to usual treatment. Method A randomised, double-blind, multicentre clinical trial will be performed in cancer patients in at-home palliative care and their family caregivers. The study population will include two samples of 40 patients and two samples of 41 caregivers. Participants will be randomly assigned either to the intervention group or to the control group. The intervention group will receive a seven-day programme including music sessions, while the control group will receive seven sessions of (spoken word) therapeutic education. In this study, the primary outcome measure is the assessment of patients’ symptoms, according to the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System, and of the overload experienced by family caregivers, measured by the Caregiver Strain Index. The secondary outcomes considered will be the participants’ health-related quality of life, their satisfaction with the intervention, and an economic valuation. Discussion This study is expected to enhance our understanding of the efficacy and cost-utility of music therapy for cancer patients in palliative care and for their family caregivers. The results of this project are expected to be applicable and transferrable to usual clinical practice for patients in home palliative care and for their caregivers. The approach described can be incorporated as an additional therapeutic resource within comprehensive palliative care. To our knowledge, no previous high quality studies, based on a double-blind clinical trial, have been undertaken to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of music therapy. The cost-effectiveness of the project will provide information to support decision making, thereby improving the management of health resources and their use within the health system. Trial registration The COMTHECARE study is registered at Clinical Trials.gov, NCT04052074. Registered 9 August, 2019.

Abstract
AbstractMusic interventions have been introduced in a range of pain management contexts, yet considerable inconsistencies have been identified across evaluation studies. These inconsistencies have been attributed to a lack of clarity around the prospective cognitive mechanisms of action underlying such interventions. The current systematic scoping review was conducted to examine the theoretical rationales provided in the literature for introducing music listening interventions (MLIs) in pain contexts. 3 search terms (music, listening, and pain) were used in four electronic databases, and 75 articles were included for analysis. Content analysis was used to identify that more intensive listening schedules were associated with chronic and cancer pain compared with procedural pain. The degree to which patients had a choice over the music selection could be categorized into 1 of 5 levels. Thematic synthesis was then applied to develop 5 themes that describe the cognitive mechanisms involved in MLIs for pain. These mechanisms were brought together to build the Cognitive Vitality Model, which emphasizes the role of individual agency in mediating the beneficial effects of music listening through the processes of Meaning-Making, Enjoyment, and Musical Integration. Finally, content analysis was used to demonstrate that only a small proportion of studies were explicitly designed to examine the cognitive mechanisms underlying MLIs and we have suggested ways to improve future practice and empirical research. We call on researchers to design and evaluate MLIs in line with the Cognitive Vitality Model of music listening interventions for pain.

Abstract
AIM AND OBJECTIVES To explore the experiences and views of nurses who provide nonpharmacological therapies for chronic pain management in palliative care. BACKGROUND Nursing expertise in palliative care is essential in providing pain relief to patients with chronic diseases. Examinations of the use of nonpharmacological therapies for chronic pain management in palliative care have revealed what nonpharmacological therapies have been used, but there is insufficient knowledge regarding nurses' attitudes, views and experiences regarding pain therapies in this context. DESIGN A qualitative descriptive design was chosen. METHODS Data were collected through individual interviews in a purposive sample with 15 nurses to ensure maximum variation. The data were analysed using qualitative content analysis. This study aligns with the consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ) checklist. RESULTS The analysis yielded four categories, as follows: "building and sustaining favourable therapeutic relationships" involved the creation of trust and a solid relationship; in "recognising the diversity of patients' needs," person-centred care is expressed as being vital for individualised nonpharmacological pain management; "incorporating significant others" describes how nurses can help to ease the patient's pain by identifying positive encounters with family members or friends; and in "recognising the existence of barriers," nurses highlight vulnerable groups such as children, for whom nurses require special education to enable optimal nonpharmacological pain management. CONCLUSION The unique knowledge that nurses gain about the patient through the nurse-patient relationship is central and crucial for successful nonpharmacological pain management. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE This study emphasises the need for nurses to get to know their patient and to be open and sensitive to patients' descriptions of their unique life situations, as this provides the necessary knowledge for optimal care and pain management. Nurses should be encouraged and given the opportunity to attend specialised training in palliative care and pain management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Effectiveness of music-based interventions (MI) on cancer patients' anxiety, depression, pain and quality of life (QoL) is a current research theme. MI are highly variable, making it challenging to compare studies. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS To summarize the evidence on MI in cancer patients, 40 studies were reviewed following the PRISMA statement. Studies were included if assessing at least one outcome among anxiety, depression, QoL and pain in patients aged ≥ 18, with an active oncological/onco-haematological diagnosis, participating to any kind of Music Therapy (MT), during/after surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy. RESULTS A positive effect of MI on the outcomes measured was supported. Greater reductions of anxiety and depression were observed in breast cancer patients. MI involving patients admitted to a hospital ward were less effective on QoL. CONCLUSION The increasing evidence about MI effectiveness, tolerability, feasibility and appreciation, supports the need of MI implementation in Oncology, Radiotherapy and Surgery wards, and promotion of knowledge among health operators.

Abstract
CONTEXT The quality of death has increasingly raised concern because of the physical and psychological suffering of patients with advanced disease. Music therapy has been widely used in palliative care; however, its physical and mental effectiveness remains unclear. OBJECTIVE To assess the effectiveness of music therapy during palliative care in improving physiology and psychology outcomes. METHODS Randomized controlled trials evaluating music therapy for terminally ill patients were searched and included from inception up to April 25, 2018. The quality of the studies was assessed using the risk of bias tool recommended by the Cochrane Handbook V.5.1.0. RESULTS In this study, 11 randomized controlled trials (inter-rater agreement, κ = 0.86) involving 969 participants were included. The quality of the included studies ranged from moderate to high. Compared with general palliative care, music therapy can reduce pain (standardized mean difference: -0.44, 95% confidence interval: -0.60 to -0.27, P < 0.00001) and improve the quality of life (standardized mean difference: 0.61, 95% confidence interval: 0.41 to 0.82, P < 0.00001) in terminally ill patients. In addition, anxiety, depression, and emotional function are improved as well. However, no significant differences were found in the patient's physical status, fatigue, and social function. CONCLUSION This meta-analysis study demonstrated that music therapy served as an effective intervention to alleviate pain and psychological symptoms of terminally ill patients. However, considering the limitation of the quantity of the studies included, these results would need to be further confirmed.

Abstract
RATIONALE Morphine is a representative pain killer. However, repeated use tends to induce addiction. Music therapy has been gaining interest as a useful type of therapy for neuropsychiatric diseases. OBJECTIVES The present study examined whether Korean traditional music (KT) could suppress morphine-seeking behavior and anxiety-like behavior induced by extinction from chronic morphine use and additionally investigated a possible neuronal mechanism. MATERIAL & METHODS Male Sprague-Dawley rats were trained to intravenously self-administer morphine hydrochloride (1.0 mg/kg) using a fixed ratio 1 schedule in daily 2 h session during 3 weeks. After training, rats who established baseline (variation less than 20% of the mean of infusion for 3 consecutive days) underwent extinction. Music was played twice a day during extinction. In the second experiment, the selective antagonists of GABAA and GABAB receptors were treated before the last playing to investigate the neuronal mechanism focusing on the GABA receptor pathway. Another experiment of elevated plus maze was performed to investigate whether music therapy has an anxiolytic effect at the extinction phase. RESULTS KT but not other music (Indian road or rock music) reduced morphine-seeking behavior induced by a priming challenge with morphine. And, this effect was blocked by the GABA receptor antagonists. In addition, KT showed anxiolytic effects against withdrawal from morphine. CONCLUSIONS Results of this study suggest that KT suppresses morphine-seeking behavior via GABA receptor pathway. In addition, KT showed to have anxiolytic effects, suggesting it has bi-directional effects on morphine.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study was intended to examine the effect of selective soothing music on fistula puncture-related pain in hemodialysis patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS This is a randomized clinical trial in which 114 participants were selected from two hemodialysis units by means of a non-random, convenience sampling method. The participants were then allocated in three groups of music (N = 38), headphone (N = 38), and control (N = 38). The fistula puncture-related pain was measured 1 min after venipuncture procedure in all three groups. The music group listened to their self-selected and preferred music 6 min before needle insertion into a fistula until the end of procedure. The headphone group wore a headphone alone without listening to music 6 min before needle insertion into a fistula until the end of procedure. The control group did not receive any intervention from the research team during needle insertion into a fistula. The pain intensity was measured immediately after the intervention in all three groups. RESULTS This study showed a significant difference between the music and control groups, and the music and headphone groups in terms of the mean pain score after the intervention. However, the analysis did not indicate any significant difference between the headphone and control groups with regard to the mean pain score after the intervention. CONCLUSION It is concluded that music can be used effectively for pain related to needle insertion into a fistula in hemodialysis patients. Future research should investigate the comparative effects of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions on fistula puncture-related pain.
