A Comparative Evaluation of Effect of Reinforced Autopolymerizing Resin on the Flexural Strength of Repaired Heat-polymerized Denture Base Resin before and after Thermocycling

An in vitro evaluation of bond strength and failure behavior between 3D-printed cobalt-chromium alloy and different types of denture base resins

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to evaluate the shear bond strength and failure behavior between cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloy and different types of denture base resins (DBRs) over time.

METHODS

Seventy-two disk-shaped specimens (8 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness) were manufactured using a selective laser melting technology-based metal 3D printer. Three types of DBRs were used: heat-cure (HEA group), cold-cure (COL group), and 3D-printable (TDP group) DBRs (n = 12 per group). Each DBR specimen was fabricated as a 5 mm × 5 mm × 5 mm cube model. The specimens of the TDP group were manufactured using a digital light processing technology-based 3D printer. Half of the DBRs were stored in distilled water at 37 °C for 24 h, whereas the remaining half underwent thermocycling for 10,000 cycles. Shear bond strength was measured using a universal testing machine; failure modes were observed, and metal surfaces were evaluated using energy dispersive spectrometry.

RESULTS

The shear bond strength did not differ between the DBR types within the non-thermocycled groups. Contrarily, the TDP group exhibited inferior strength compared to the HEA group (P = 0.008) after thermocycling. All three types of DBRs exhibited a significant decrease in the shear bond strength and an increased tendency toward adhesive failure after thermocycling.

CONCLUSIONS

The bond strength between 3D-printable DBRs and Co-Cr alloy was comparable to that of heat-and cold-cure DBRs before thermocycling. However, it exhibited a considerable weakening in comparison to heat-cure DBRs after simulated short-term use.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The application of 3D-printable DBR in metal framework-incorporated removable partial dentures may be feasible during the early phase of the treatment. However, its application is currently limited because the bond strength between the 3D-printable DBR and metal may weaken after short-term use. Further studies on methods to increase the bond strength between these heterogeneous materials are required.

Effect of repair methods and materials on the flexural strength of 3D-printed denture base resin

PURPOSE

The aim of this study was to evaluate the flexural strength of a 3D-printed denture base resin (Cosmos Denture), after different immediate repair techniques with surface treatments and thermocycling.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Rectangular 3D-printed denture base resin (Cosmos Denture) specimens (N = 130) were thermocycled (5,000 cycles, 5℃ and 55℃) before and after the different repair techniques (n = 10 per group) using an autopolymerized acrylic resin (Jet, J) or a hard relining resin (Soft Confort, SC), and different surface treatments: Jet resin monomer for 180 s (MMA), blasting with aluminum oxide (JAT) or erbium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser (L). The control group were intact specimens. A three-point flexural strength test was performed, and data (MPa) were analyzed by ANOVA and Games-Howell post hoc test (α = 0.05). Each failure was observed and classified through stereomicroscope images and the surface treatments were viewed by scanning electron microscope (SEM).

RESULTS

Control group showed the highest mean of flexural strength, statistically different from the other groups (P < .001), followed by MMA+J group. The groups with L treatment were statistically similar to the MMA groups (P > .05). The JAT+J group was better than the SC and JAT+SC groups (P < .05), but similar to the other groups (P > .05). Adhesive failures were most observed in JAT groups, especially when repaired with SC. The SEM images showed surface changes for all treatments, except JAT alone.

CONCLUSION

Denture bases fabricated with 3D-printed resin should be preferably repaired with MMA+J. SC and JAT+SC showed the worst results. Blasting impaired the adhesion of the SC resin.

Evaluation of flexural properties and dynamic mechanical analysis of glass fiber-reinforced polyamide resin

Purpose:

The aim of this study was to evaluate flexural strength, elastic modulus and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) of heat-polymerized polymethyl methacrylate resin, polyamide resin and glass fiber-reinforced polyamide resin.

Materials and methods:

Three groups were determined according to denture base materials as polymethyl methacrylate resin (H), polyamide resin (P) and glass fiber reinforced polyamide resin (R). Sixteen specimens for each denture base material were prepared with dimensions of 64x10x3.3 mm for three-point bending test. Two specimens for each denture base material were prepared with dimensions of 30x10x3 mm for DMA. Polymethyl methacrylate and polyamide specimens were prepared according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. The silane was applied to glass fibers (4.5 mm length) 2% by weight of the polyamide resin, they were placed in polyamide resin cartilages and injected to the mold. The thermal aging procedure was applied to half of specimens of each material (n=8). Flexural strength and elastic modulus of the specimens were determined by three-point bending test at a speed of 5 mm/ min. DMA was performed to 1 specimen from each group to evaluate viscoelastic properties. Data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA, Tukey and Paired t tests.

Results:

A statistically significant difference was found in flexural strength and elastic modulus values of denture base materials (p=0.00). The highest flexural strength and elastic modulus values were observed in polymethyl methacrylate group. There was no significant difference between polyamide and glass-fiber reinforced polyamide groups (p=0.497). No significant difference was determined in all threedenture base materials before and after aging procedure.

Conclusion:

The reinforcement with glass-fibers did not affect the flexural strength and elastic modulus of polyamide resin.

Effect of Antibacterial Silver-Releasing Filler on the Physicochemical Properties of Poly(Methyl Methacrylate) Denture Base Material

Colonization of polymeric dental prosthetic materials by yeast-like fungi and the association of these microorganisms with complications occurring during prosthetic treatment are important clinical problems. In previously presented research, submicron inorganic particles of silver sodium hydrogen zirconium phosphate (S-P) were introduced into poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) denture base material which allowed for obtaining the antimicrobial effect during a 90 day experiment. The aim of the present study was to investigate the flexural strength, impact strength, hardness, wear resistance, sorption, and solubility during three months of storage in distilled water. With increasing S-P concentration after 2 days of conditioning in distilled water, reduced values of flexural strength (107-72 MPa), impact strength (18.4-5.5 MPa) as well as enhanced solubility (0.95-1.49 µg/mm3) were registered, but they were at acceptable levels, and the sorption was stable. Favorable changes included increased hardness (198-238 MPa), flexural modulus (2.9-3.3 GPa), and decreased volume loss during wear test (2.9-0.2 mm3). The percentage changes of the analyzed properties during the 90 days of storage in distilled water were similar for all materials.

Bond Strength and Fracture Resistance of Flowable Bulk Fill Composite Posts and Cores in Endodontically Treated Teeth

OBJECTIVES

Smart dentin replacement (SDR) is a new flowable bulk fill composite with many useful characteristics such as low viscosity and higher depth of cure. This study aimed to evaluate the bond strength and fracture resistance of flowable bulk fill composite posts and cores versus that of fiber posts and cores.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Forty intact, extracted human maxillary central incisor roots were endodontically treated. Group A (n = 20) was prepared for the composite space and group B (n = 20) was prepared for the fiber post space. Group A and B were divided into two subgroups A1 and A2 and B1 and B2, respectively (10 roots for each subgroup). Root canal spaces of group A1 were filled with SDR composite, X-Post fiber post with Core X Flow composite was inserted into the root canal spaces of group B1. Group A2 was restored using SDR and group B2 was restored using post and core composite. Five hundred thermocycles were applied for the sample. Bond strength values were measured for segments in A1 and B1. Fracture force values were measured for specimens of A2 and B2.

RESULTS

No significant difference was observed between the two paired groups (A1 and B1) and (A2 and B2) in bond strength and fracture force values.

CONCLUSION

SDR could be used for restoring endodontically treated teeth.
