Corrosion suppression and strengthening of the Al-10Zn alloy by adding silica nanorods

Aluminum alloys have been widely studied because of their current engineering applications. Due to their high strength and lightweight, cracking can easily initiate on their surface, deteriorating their overall functional and structural properties and causing environmental attacks. The current study highlights the significant influence of incorporating 1 wt% silica nanostructure in aluminum-10 zinc alloys. The characteristics of the composites were examined using Vickers hardness, tensile, and electrochemical testing (OCP, Tafel, and EIS) at various artificial aging temperatures (423, 443, and 463 K). Silica nanorods may achieve ultrafine grains, increase hardness by up to 13.8%, increase σUTS values by up to 79% at 443 K, and improve corrosion rate by up to 89.4%, surpassing Al-10 Zn bulk metallics. We demonstrate that silica nanorods contribute to the creation of a superior nanocomposite that not only limits failure events under loading but also resists corrosion. Our findings suggest that silica nanocomposite can produce unique features for use in a variety of automotive, construction, and aerospace applications. This improvement can be attributed mainly to the large surface area of nano-silica particles, which alters the Al matrix. Microstructural, mechanical, and electrochemical studies revealed that the effects of structure refinement were dependent on nano-silica.

Enhancing 3D-printed denture base resins: A review of material innovations

The limited physical and mechanical properties of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), the current gold standard, necessitates exploring improved denture base materials. While three-dimensional (3D) printing offers accuracy, efficiency, and patient comfort advantages, achieving superior mechanics in 3D-printed denture resins remains challenging despite good biocompatibility and esthetics. This review investigates the potential of innovative materials to address the limitations of 3D-printed denture base materials. Thus, this article is organized to provide a comprehensive overview of recent efforts to enhance 3D-printed denture base materials, highlighting advancements. It critically examines the impact of incorporating various nanoparticles (zirconia, titania, etc.) on these materials' physical and mechanical properties. Additionally, it delves into recent strategies for nanofiller surface treatment and biocompatibility evaluation and explores potential future directions for polymeric composites in denture applications. The review finds that adding nanoparticles significantly improves performance compared to unmodified resins, and properties can be extensively enhanced through specific modifications, particularly silanized nanoparticles. Optimizing 3D-printed denture acrylics requires a multifaceted approach, with future research prioritizing novel nanomaterials and surface modification techniques for a novel generation of superior performance, esthetically pleasing, and long-lasting dentures.

Effect of titanium dioxide and zirconium dioxide nanoparticle incorporation on the thermal conductivity of heat-activated polymethylmethacrylate denture base resins: An in vitro experimental study

AIM

The aim is to determine thermal conduction by heat-activated polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) infiltrated with 1 weight% Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) and 1 weight% Zirconium Dioxide (ZrO2) nanoparticles and to compare with that of conventional PMMA.

STUDY SETTING AND DESIGN

In vitro experimental study.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Eighteen disc shaped specimens with a thickness of 5 mm and diameter of 50 mm, were fabricated and grouped according to the material used: Group B1 (resin infiltrated with 1 weight% TiO2), Group B2 (resin infiltrated with 1 weight% ZrO2), and Control Group B3 (heat-activated conventional PMMA resin). Disc-shaped specimens were analyzed for thermal conductivity using "modified guarded hot plate apparatus" in the thermal lab of the Indian Space Research Organisation.

STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED

One-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's post hoc test was used to compare the arithmetic means of all three groups.

RESULTS

A statistically significant difference was noted among all three groups. Group B2 had the maximum thermal conductivity, followed by Group B1. Thermal conductivity was the least for Group B3. A post hoc comparison revealed that the difference was significant between Group B2 and Group B3.

CONCLUSION

Nano ZrO2 addition in PMMA increased its thermal conductivity. There is evidence that it improves its mechanical properties as well. Hence, Nano ZrO2 addition in PMMA is highly recommended. Nano TiO2 addition in PMMA did not provide any significant advantage in terms of thermal conductivity, but its addition in PMMA is justified because of its mechanical and antimicrobial properties.

Effect of nanomodified 3D printed photopolymerizable resin on flexural strength, color, and antimicrobial efficacy: An in vitro study

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Three-dimensional (3D) printing has become popular in dentistry, but studies on the influence of incorporating organic and inorganic nanofillers on 3D printed materials are lacking.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to assess the flexural strength, color, and antimicrobial efficacy of 3D printed photopolymerizable resin upon adding titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) and silanized chitosan nanoparticles (sCS NPs).

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A stereolithographic material (VarseoSmile Crown plus; Bego) was used as a control group (VSC resin), and 3 nanocomposite resin groups were prepared by adding nanoparticles as follow: titanium dioxide group (VSC resin + 0.4% wt. TiO2 NPs), chitosan group (VSC resin + 0.4% wt. sCS NPs), and hybrid group (VSC resin + 0.2% wt. TiO2 NPs + 0.2% wt. sCS NPs). A total of 132 specimens were designed by using a free computer-aided design software program, printed, postpolymerized, and divided into 4 groups. The nanocomposite resins were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Bar shaped specimens (n=44) were tested for 3-point flexural strength using a universal testing machine followed by the color measurement of disk-shaped specimens (n=44) with a spectrophotometer. Antimicrobial capacity was measured with Streptococcus mutans, and absorbance was measured using a microplate reader (n=44). Statistical assessments were made with 1-way ANOVA followed by the Tukey post hoc test with Bonferroni adjustment (α=.05).

RESULTS

The hybrid group recorded the highest mean value of flexural strength 135.51 MPa, showing a significant difference compared with that of the control group (P=.022). Regarding color, the mean ∆E00 for titanium was 1.18, for chitosan was 4.26, and for the hybrid group was 3.23 (P<.001). The optical density of the chitosan (2.42) was significantly higher than that of the titanium 1.36 (P=.007) and that of the control 1.63 (P=.042).

CONCLUSIONS

The incorporation of nanofillers resulted in an increase in flexural strength, but it adversely affected the color of nanocomposite resins. Antimicrobial efficacy was improved by incorporating titanium nanofillers.

3D printed denture base material: The effect of incorporating TiO2 nanoparticles and artificial ageing on the physical and mechanical properties

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of three-dimensional (3D) printed denture base resin incorporating TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs), subjected to a physical ageing process.

METHODS

Acrylic denture base samples were prepared by a Stereolithography (SLA) 3D printing technique reinforced with different concentrations (0.10, 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75) of silanated TiO2 NPs. The resulting nanocomposite materials were characterized in terms of degree of conversion (DC), and sorption/solubility flexural strength, impact strength, Vickers hardness and Martens hardness and compared with unmodified resin and conventional heat-cured (HC) material. The nanocomposites were reassessed after subjecting them to ageing in artificial saliva. A fractured surface was studied under a scanning electron microscope (SEM).

RESULTS

The addition of TiO2 NPs into 3D-printed resin significantly improved flexural strength/modulus, impact strength, Vickers hardness, and DC, while also slightly enhancing Martens hardness compared to the unmodified resin. Sorption values did not show any improvements, while solubility was reduced significantly. The addition of 0.10 wt% NPs provided the highest performance amongst the other concentrations, and 0.75 wt% NPs showed the lowest. Although ageing degraded the materials' performance to a certain extent, the trends remained the same. SEM images showed a homogenous distribution of the NPs at lower concentrations (0.10 and 0.25 wt%) but revealed agglomeration of the NPs with the higher concentrations (0.50 and 0.75 wt%).

SIGNIFICANCE

The outcomes of this study suggested that the incorporation of TiO2 NPs (0.10 wt%) into 3D-printed denture base material showed superior performance compared to the unmodified 3D-printed resin even after ageing in artificial saliva. The nanocomposite has the potential to extend service life of denture bases in future clinical use.

Effect of denture cleansers on color stability and surface properties of denture base material containing titanium dioxide nanoparticles

PURPOSE

To investigate the effect of different denture cleansers on color stability, surface roughness, and hardness of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) infused with titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) at concentrations of 1% and 2% by weight on each.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

In this in vitro study, 90 disc-shaped specimens (10×10×2 mm) were divided into 3 main groups: the non-containing nanoparticle group (0wt% concentration), 1wt% concentration, and 2wt% concentration TiO2 NPs groups. Each group was further assorted into 3 subgroups (n = 10): immersed in distilled water, oxygenating tablet (Corega), and 0.5% sodium hypochlorite. Color change, surface roughness, and hardness values were assessed after 90 and 180 days of storage. Color changes (∆E) were measured with a spectrophotometer (VITA, Easy Shade V, Germany) and assessed using the CIE L*a*b* colorimetric system and the American National Bureau of Standards (NBS = 0.92×∆E). The surface roughness and surface hardness values were measured using a profilometer device and Vickers hardness tester, respectively. First, ANOVA-repeated measurements were performed, followed by the Tukey test. The significance level in this study was considered 0.05.

RESULTS

At all concentrations, there were significant differences in the mean color changes of samples immersed in cleansers compared to distilled water (p < 0.01). Moreover, hypochlorite caused a significant increase compared to Corega at 0wt% concentration after 90 days and at 1wt% concentration after 90 and 180 days. Evaluations also showed that the mean NBS values in all cleanser groups were in the range of appreciable change, except the water group. In addition, only hypochlorite changed the color higher than the clinically acceptable range (∆E >3.7). The mean roughness of samples immersed in hypochlorite at 0wt% concentration was significantly higher than the samples containing TiO2 NPs (p = 0.006). No significant difference was observed in surface roughness of samples containing different concentrations of TiO2 NPs immersed in different cleansers; however, hypochlorite increased the surface roughness of samples without TiO2 NPs compared to samples containing TiO2 NPs after 180 days. The immersion time in cleansers had a significant influence on the surface roughness and hardness while having no effect on the color.

CONCLUSION

In general, the cleansers had a significant effect on color change in all groups compared to distilled water. The adverse effect of hypochlorite was more than Corega. The cleansers in the samples containing TiO2 NPs did not make a significant difference in surface roughness in comparison with the distilled water groups. Surface hardness of the samples was not affected in a steady pattern by the cleansers.

Anti-adherent activity of nano-coatings deposited by thermionic vacuum arc plasma on C. albicans biofilm formation

BACKGROUND

The purpose of this study was to analyze the anti-adherent activity of nano-coatings deposited by Thermionic Vacuum Arc plasma on C. albicans ATCC 10231 biofilm.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A total of 80 disc-shaped (2 × 10 mm) polymethymethacrylate samples were prepared and divided into four groups with 10 samples in each group (Control, ZnO, SnO2, Ag) (n = 10). Using thermionic vacuum arc plasma, they were coated with ZnO, SnO2, and Ag. 3-(4,5-dimethyl-thiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) and Crystal Viole (CV) assays were conducted for biofilm quantification. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe biofilm images of C. albicans biofilm.

RESULTS

MTT and CV mean values differ statistically significantly between all groups (p ⩽ 0.05). The SnO2 group had the lowest mean value, whereas the control group received the highest value.

CONCLUSION

SnO2 coating shown greater anti-adherent activity than either metal oxides. C. albicans biofilm formation on denture base surfaces is reduced following Thermionic Vacuum Arc plasma coating with SnO2.

Corrosion behavior and microstructure of Al-10Zn alloy with nano CuO addition

The present study explores the preparation of Al-10wt.%Zn alloy by the casting process. Nano CuO was prepared by the Co-precipitation method. The effect of adding nanostructure of (1wt.% CuO) to Al-10Zn alloy was studied the corrosion effects as-cast and with different aging temperatures (423, 443, and 463 K) for 2 h in 3.5% NaCl aqueous solution after homogenized for 2 h at 500 K at room temperature. Electrochemical measurements (OCP, Tafel, and EIS) were performed to determine the corrosion rate (C.R.) and corrosion current density (Icorr.) to find out corrosion behavior. In addition, microstructures of Al-10Zn and Al-10Zn-1CuO were observed using a scanning electron microscope, EDX mapping, and the optical microscope to investigate the effect of the nanoparticle's addition before and after aging and the corrosion test. The average crystal size and the dislocation density were calculated from the XRD pattern. The results show that the appropriate addition of CuO nanoparticles can refine the Al-10Zn alloy and shift the Al-10Zn alloy to a more noble direction.

Effect of addition of titanium dioxide nanoparticles on the antimicrobial properties, surface roughness and surface hardness of polymethyl methacrylate: A Systematic Review

Background: Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA) denture-base resins have poor surface properties that facilitates microbial adhesion causing denture stomatitis. This systematic review aims to evaluate the effect of different sizes and percentages of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2NP) on the antimicrobial property, surface roughness and surface hardness of PMMA denture base resin.  Methods: A systematic search of English peer-reviewed articles, clinical trial registries, grey literature databases and other online sources was performed using the PRISMA-S Guidelines for In-Vivo and In-Vitro studies. Qualitative data synthesis was performed to analyse sample dimensions, acrylic used, treatments of nanoparticles, methods used for testing and effect of size and percentage of nanoparticle. Risk of bias assessment was done using modified Cochrane risk of bias tool. Results: Out of 1376 articles, 15 were included. TiO 2NP of size less than 30 nm was most frequently used. Both antimicrobial property and surface hardness improved irrespective of the size of the added TiO 2NP. Three studies reported increase in the surface roughness with less than 50 nm TiO 2NP.  3% TiO 2NP was most frequently used. On increasing the percentage, three studies reported an increase in antimicrobial property, while two studies found no change. With TiO 2NP greater than or equal to 3%, six studies reported an increase in surface hardness, while two reported increase in surface roughness. Large methodological variations were observed across studies. All studies except one were of moderate quality. Conclusions:   On addition of TiO 2NP to heat polymerized PMMA, the antimicrobial property and surface hardness improved irrespective of the size of the TiO 2NP, however, addition of nanoparticles less than 50 nm increased the surface roughness. Increasing the percentage of TiO 2NP increased the surface hardness but did not always increase the antimicrobial property. Addition of 3% TiO 2NP provided optimum results with regards to antimicrobial effect and surface hardness, but increase in the surface roughness.

Assessing the Antifungal Activity of a Soft Denture Liner Loaded with Titanium Oxide Nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs)

Aim: Soft denture lining materials are susceptible to be colonized by different microorganisms, especially by Candida albicans (C. albicans), causing denture-induced stomatitis. This study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of incorporating titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) into a soft denture liner towards reducing microbial activity. Method: A total of 40 PEMA-TiO2 nanocomposites samples were fabricated by adding 0.0 wt.% (control), 1.0 wt.%, 1.5 wt.%, and 2 wt.% TiO2 NPs to a heat cured soft denture lining material (polyethyl methacrylate, PEMA). The prepared samples were divided into four groups (n = 10) according to the content of TiO2 NPs. The uniformity of TiO2 NPS distribution within the denture liner matrix was assessed using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The viable count of C. albicans was evaluated to test the antifungal resistance of the developed composite. Results: The SEM images showed fairly homogeneous dispersion, with patches of TiO2 NPs agglomeration within the PEMA matrix and an increasing concentration of NPs with higher NP content. The particle map and EDX analysis confirmed the evidence of the TiO2 NPs. The mean viable count results for the control (0.0 wt.%) and 1.0 wt.%, 1.5 wt.%, and 2 wt.% TiO2 groups were 139.80, 12.00, 6.20, and 1.00, respectively, with a significant difference from the control group (p < 0.05). The antifungal activity also increased with the increase in the concentration of TiO2 NPs. Conclusions: The addition of TiO2 NPs into a heat-cured soft denture liner provided antifungal activity as evidenced by the reduced colonization of C. albicans. The antimicrobial activity of the liner material increased with the increased concentration of TiO2 NPS.

Influence of Incorporating 5% Weight Titanium Oxide Nanoparticles on Flexural Strength, Micro-Hardness, Surface Roughness and Water Sorption of Dental Self-Cured Acrylic Resin

Background: Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is used in fabricating acrylic denture bases. Repairing a fractured acrylic denture base can be done by self-cured PMMA, yet this is still a weak point after repair. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of incorporating 5% weight titanium oxide nanoparticles (TiO₂) to self-cured PMMA on flexural strength, surface micro-hardness, roughness, and water sorption. Methods: A total of 160 acrylic–resin specimens were used in this study. They were divided in two main groups; (a) control group, prepared by mixing self-cured PMMA powder to its liquid monomer, (b) treated group, prepared by blending 5% weight TiO₂ nanoparticles to self-cured PMMA powder then this blend was mixed with the liquid monomer. Flexure strength, surface micro-hardness, roughness, and water sorption were evaluated. Data were analyzed using independent sample t-tests (p ≤ 0.05). Results: There was a significant increase in the flexural strength of PMMA of the treated group after the addition of TiO₂ (137.6 MPa) compared with the control (75.4 MPa) (p ≤ 0.001). No significant difference between the two groups in terms of micro-hardness (p = 0.385) and surface roughness (p = 0.269). Water sorption showed a significant reduction in the treated group (p ≤ 0.001). Conclusions: Addition of 5% weight TiO₂ nanoparticles to the self-cured acrylic resin improved its flexural strength and reduced its water-sorption without impairing the surface micro-hardness and roughness.

PMMA-Based Nanocomposites for Odontology Applications: A State-of-the-Art

Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), a well-known polymer of the methacrylate family, is extensively used in biomedicine, particularly in odontological applications including artificial teeth, dentures and denture bases, obturators, provisional or permanent crowns, and so forth. The exceptional PMMA properties, including aesthetics, inexpensiveness, simple manipulation, low density, and adjustable mechanical properties, make it a perfect candidate in the field of dentistry. However, it presents some deficiencies, including weakness regarding hydrolytic degradation, poor fracture toughness, and a lack of antibacterial activity. To further enhance its properties and solve these drawbacks, different approaches can be performed, including the incorporation of nanofillers. In this regard, different types of metallic nanoparticles, metal oxide nanofillers, and carbon-based nanomaterials have been recently integrated into PMMA matrices with the aim to reduce water absorption and improve their performance, namely their thermal and flexural properties. In this review, recent studies regarding the development of PMMA-based nanocomposites for odontology applications are summarized and future perspectives are highlighted.

Polymethylmethacrylate denture base layering as a new approach for the addition of antifungal agents

PURPOSE

To introduce a new technique, denture base layering, for the addition of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO₂ NPs) to polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and to investigate the effects of the layering technique on Candida albicans (C. albicans) adhesion and on surface roughness, hardness, translucency, and flexural strength.

MATERIALS & METHODS

In total, 210 heat-polymerized acrylic resin specimens were prepared as discs (15 × 2 mm) for testing C. albicans adhesion (n = 70) and surface roughness, hardness, and translucency (n = 70); and as acrylic plates (65 × 10 × 2.5 mm) for testing flexural strength (n = 70). Specimens were divided into 4 groups: control (n = 30), one-layer (n = 60), double-layer (n = 60), and dotted-layer (n = 60) according to the packing and layering technique. Each group was divided according to the concentration of TiO₂ NPs 1% and 2.5% (n = 10). The control group comprised one layer of unmodified resin. The one-layer group comprised one layer of a mixture of PMMA/TiO₂ NPs packed conventionally. The double-layer group consisted of two different layers packed in two steps, as follows: unmodified resin first, followed by a continuous thin layer of the PMMA/TiO₂ NPs mixture. Similarly, the dotted-layer group consisted of two different layers packed in two steps, as follows: unmodified resin first, followed by a thin layer of the PMMA/TiO₂ NPs. However, the second mixture was added in a dotted manner. The direct culture method for C. albicans adhesion before and after ultraviolet light activation, and surface roughness, hardness, translucency, and flexural strength were measured. An analysis of variance and Tukey's post hoc test were used for data analysis (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

The addition of TiO₂ NPs reduced C. albicans adhesion (P ˂.001). However, no significant difference was found between both concentrations within the same group before and after ultraviolet light activation (P >0.05), except in the 1% dotted-layer (P = .022). Surface roughness and hardness were not affected by the additions of different concentrations of TiO₂ NPs (P = .905) and (P = .059), respectively. Translucency was significantly reduced in all the groups (P ˂.001) except in the 1% dotted-layer (P = .332). Flexural strength decreased as the TiO₂ NPs concentration increased, with the greatest reduction in strength observed in the one-layer group (P ˂.001).

CONCLUSIONS

The double and dotted layering techniques were effective in reducing C. albicans adhesion, without affecting surface roughness, hardness, or flexural strength. Comparative Effect of Incorporation of ZrO2, TiO2, and SiO2 Nanoparticles on the Strength and Surface Properties of PMMA Denture Base Material: An In Vitro Study

Objective

This study aimed to investigate the effects of nanoparticles (zirconium dioxide (ZrO₂), titanium dioxide (TiO₂), and silicon dioxide (SiO₂)) on the flexural strength, impact strength, hardness, and wear resistance of the acrylic resin denture base material.

Materials and Methods

Acrylic resin specimens were fabricated in dimensions according to American Dental Association (ADA) specifications per test. Specimens were divided according to nanofiller into four groups; unmodified as control, ZrO₂ (Z), TiO₂, (T), and SiO₂ (S) groups. Each one was subdivided into two subgroups according to nanoparticle concentrations; 3% and 7% (Z3, Z7, T3, T7, S3, and S7). A 3-point bending test, Charpy impact test, and Vickers hardness test were used for flexural strength, impact strength, and hardness measurements, respectively. Wear resistance was measured by the differences in surface roughness of tested specimens before and after the wear test. A scanning electron microscope was used to assess nanoparticle specifications and distributions and for fracture surfaces analysis. ANOVA, Bonferroni's post hoc test, and the Kruskal–Wallis test were applied for data analysis (α = 0.05).

Results

Regarding the flexural and impact strength, there was a statistically remarkable increase for all tested groups compared with the control group, except for the T7 and S7 groups (P value <0.001, effect size = 0.893) and (P value <0.001, effect size = 0.759), respectively. There was a statistically significant improvement in the hardness of all tested groups compared with the control group (P value <0.001, effect size = 0.67) except T3 and S3. Regarding wear, a statistically significant enhancement was noticed in the wear resistance of all tested groups (P value <0.001, effect size = 0.685), except for the T7 and S7 groups.

Conclusion

The flexural strength, impact strength, and wear resistance improved with both concentrations of ZrO₂ and low TiO₂ and SiO₂ concentrations. The hardness increased with both concentrations of ZrO₂ and high TiO₂ and SiO₂ concentrations.

Evaluation of microhardness in two types of denture bases after using sodium hypochlorite and NatureDent disinfecting agents

Background. Chemical agents, in combination with mechanical methods, play an important role in reducing microbial plaque on denture surfaces. However, these methods might change the mechanical behavior of acrylic resins, including microhardness and surface roughness. This in vitro study investigated the effect of two disinfectants, i.e., water and sodium hypochlorite, on the microhardness of conventional heat-cured and TiO₂ nanoparticle-reinforced acrylic resins. Methods. Sixty acrylic resin specimens were divided into two groups, and the samples in each group were randomly assigned to three subgroups (n=10). Heat-cured specimens and 1 wt% TiO₂ acrylic resin were prepared and immersed in three solutions: water, a solution prepared with NatureDent pills, and 1% sodium hypochlorite for 30, 60, and 90 days. Microhardness tests were performed on each sample at each immersion stage. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods, three-way and one-way ANOVA, repeated-measures t test, and Tukey HSD tests using SPSS 17. P values<0.05 were considered significant. Results. All three independent parameters, including resin, solution, and time, significantly affected microhardness (P<0.05). The microhardness of both specimen types, i.e., conventional heat-cured and TiO₂ nanoparticle-reinforced acrylic resins, immersed for 30, 60, and 90 days, was the highest and lowest in water and hypochlorite solutions, respectively. Regarding 90 days, the microhardness values of conventional heat-cured and TiO₂ nanoparticle-reinforced acrylic resins were 17.050±0.094 and 19.953±0.053 in water, 15.675±0.069 and 18.965±0.037 in hypochlorite, and 16.713±0.122 and 19.39±20.113 in NatureDent solutions, respectively. Conclusion. Disinfecting two types of acrylic resin specimens decreased their microhardness as a function of immersion time for up to 90 days in the three solutions. However, the magnitude of hardness lost was less for TiO₂ nanoparticles-reinforced acrylic resin.

Nanoparticles in Dentistry: A Comprehensive Review

In recent years, nanoparticles (NPs) have been receiving more attention in dentistry. Their advantageous physicochemical and biological properties can improve the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of numerous oral diseases, including dental caries, periodontal diseases, pulp and periapical lesions, oral candidiasis, denture stomatitis, hyposalivation, and head, neck, and oral cancer. NPs can also enhance the mechanical and microbiological properties of dental prostheses and implants and can be used to improve drug delivery through the oral mucosa. This paper reviewed studies from 2015 to 2020 and summarized the potential applications of different types of NPs in the many fields of dentistry.

Effect of titanium dioxide nanoparticle reinforcement on flexural strength of denture base resin: A systematic review and meta-analysis

The study was designed to assess the change in flexural strength of unmodified heat cure denture base polymer resin on reinforcement with titanium dioxide nanoparticles in different concentrations. In vitro, randomized control trials reporting flexural strength of titanium dioxide nanoparticle reinforced resin were selected. The review was formulated based on Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses- Protocol (PRISMA-P) guidelines. Quality assessment was performed according to Consolidated Standards Of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) guidelines and risk of bias Cochrane tool. Six articles in the category of 1%, 3%, 5% weight fractions of titanium dioxide nanoparticles were subjected to a meta-analysis. A meta-analysis was performed using random-effects at a 95% confidence interval. Within the limitations of the study, it can be assumed that there is no precise conformity on the ideal titanium dioxide nanoparticle concentration required to improve the flexural strength of the polymer. Stringent use of standard ISO guidelines may help in obtaining consistent results.

Prosthodontic Applications of Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA): An Update

A wide range of polymers are commonly used for various applications in prosthodontics. Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is commonly used for prosthetic dental applications, including the fabrication of artificial teeth, denture bases, dentures, obturators, orthodontic retainers, temporary or provisional crowns, and for the repair of dental prostheses. Additional dental applications of PMMA include occlusal splints, printed or milled casts, dies for treatment planning, and the embedding of tooth specimens for research purposes. The unique properties of PMMA, such as its low density, aesthetics, cost-effectiveness, ease of manipulation, and tailorable physical and mechanical properties, make it a suitable and popular biomaterial for these dental applications. To further improve the properties (thermal properties, water sorption, solubility, impact strength, flexural strength) of PMMA, several chemical modifications and mechanical reinforcement techniques using various types of fibers, nanoparticles, and nanotubes have been reported recently. The present article comprehensively reviews various aspects and properties of PMMA biomaterials, mainly for prosthodontic applications. In addition, recent updates and modifications to enhance the physical and mechanical properties of PMMA are also discussed.

Mechanical properties of new denture base material modified with gold nanoparticles

PURPOSE

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is the most commonly used material in the production of dental prostheses, and its application is often accompanied by the formation of biofilm. The aim of this work was the preparation of a PMMA/gold nanoparticles (AuNps) composite to improve the antimicrobial properties of heat-polymerised PMMA. The AuNPs were synthesised from gold (III) acetate by Ultrasonic Spray Pyrolysis (USP).In the present study, flexural strength and elastic modulus were investigated, as well as thermal conductivity, density and hardness of the PMMA/AuNps` nanocomposite, with different concentrations of AuNps. Flexural strength and elastic modulus were measured using a three-point bending test, and surface hardness was evaluated using the Vickers hardness test. The thermal conductivity of the samples was measured using the Transient Plane Source (TPS) technique. Density was determined by the pycnometry procedure. Statistical analysis was conducted on the data obtained from the experiments.

RESULTS

The flexural strength and elastic modulus of AuNps/PMMA nanocomposites decreased for all groups containing AuNps. Thermal conductivity and density increased in all groups containing AuNps compared to the control group, but it was not significant in all groups. Vickers hardness values increased significantly with an increase in AuNps` content, with the highest value 21.45 HV obtained at 0.74 wt% of AuNps. Statistical analysis was performed by means of the SPSS 19 software package.

CONCLUSIONS

Incorporation of AuNps into heat-polymerised PMMA resin led to decrease of the flexural strength and elastic modulus. At the same time, the density, thermal conductivity and hardness increased.

Effect of adding TiO2 nanoparticles on the SEM morphology and mechanical properties of conventional heat-cured acrylic resin

Background. The current study evaluated the compressive, flexural and impact strengths of heat-cured acrylic resins reinforced by TiO₂ nanoparticles (NPs).

Methods. TiO₂ NPs were provided and characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to determine their morphology and crystalline structure. For three mechanical tests, 12 acrylic resin groups (n=9), totaling 108 specimens, were prepared using a special mold for each test, with TiO₂ nanoparticle contents of 0, 0.5, 1 or 2 wt% in different groups. After curing, the compressive, flexural and impact strengths of the specimens were examined according to ISO 1567.

Results. In the SEM and XRD study of TiO2 NPs, anatase was identified as the major crystalline phase followed by rutile (average particle size: 20.4 nm). SEM images showed that the nanocomposite with 1 wt% NPs had a more homogenized blend. 1 wt% TiO₂ nanocomposite exhibited a higher, but non-significant, impact strength compared to the controls. ANOVA showed significant differences in the impact and flexural strengths between nanocomposites with various contents of TiO2 NPs.

Conclusion. The nanocomposite with 1 wt% TiO2 NPs exhibited fewer micro-pores and micro-cracks in the SEM crosssections. A non-significant increase was also observed in the impact strength with TiO₂ NPs at 1 wt%. Further increase in TiO₂ NPs decreased both the impact and flexural strengths. The compressive strength of the heat-cured acrylic resin was not affected by the incorporation of NPs.

TiO2 and PEEK Reinforced 3D Printing PMMA Composite Resin for Dental Denture Base Applications

The future of manufacturing applications in three-dimensional (3D) printing depends on the improvement and the development of materials suitable for 3D printing technology. This study aims to develop an applicable and convenient protocol for light-curing resin used in 3D industry, which could enhance antibacterial and mechanical properties of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) resin through the combination of nano-fillers of surface modified titanium dioxide (TiO₂) and micro-fillers of polyetheretherketone (PEEK). PMMA-based composite resins with various additions of TiO₂ and PEEK were prepared and submitted to characterizations including mechanical properties, distribution of the fillers (TiO₂ or/and PEEK) on the fractured surface, cytotoxicity, antibacterial activity, and blood compatibility assessment. These results indicated that the reinforced composite resins of PMMA (TiO₂-1%-PEEK-1%) possessed the most optimized properties compared to the other groups. In addition, we found the addition of 1% of TiO₂ would be an effective amount to enhance both mechanical and antibacterial properties for PMMA composite resin. Furthermore, the model printed by PMMA (TiO₂-1%-PEEK-1%) composite resin showed a smooth surface and a precise resolution, indicating this functional dental restoration material would be a suitable light-curing resin in 3D industry.

Experimental synthesis of size-controlled TiO2 nanofillers and their possible use as composites in restorative dentistry

The aim of this work was to obtain an efficient protocol with a green, fast and facile way to synthesize TiO2 NPs and its application as fillers for enhancement of desired dental properties of light curing dental composites. A comparative study comprised the fabrication of light curing restorative composite materials with incorporating different fillers with varying wt%, varying resin material composition, to determine optimal dental restoration by focusing on the physical properties of dental materials. It was observed that the as-prepared green synthesized TiO2 nanohybrid particles contributed to the improvement in physical properties, thus promoting the green and rapid synthesis of nanohybrid fillers. In addition, mechanical values for experimental cured resin materials with bare and surface modified fillers were obtained. The experimental light curing nanocomposites with 5 wt% (wt%) nanohybrid surface modified filler particles with BisGMA (60 wt%), TEGDMA (20 wt%) and UDMA (20 wt%) resin composition provided increased physical strength and durability with higher compressive stress 195.56 MPa and flexural stress 83.30 MPa. Furthermore, the dental property, such as polymerization shrinkage (PS) obtained from volumetric method was decreased up to 3.4% by the addition of nano-hybrid fillers. In addition to this, the biocompatible and antimicrobial nature of TiO2 and its aesthetics properties such as tooth-like color makes TiO2 favorable to use as fillers. This study presents a green and facile method for the synthesis of TiO2 nanohybrid particles that can be successfully used as fillers in an experimental light curing resin matrix for enhancing its dental properties. This describes the potential of the green synthesized TiO2 nanohybrid particles to use as fillers in restorative dentistry.

Determination of Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) mechanical properties as a denture material

Purpose

To optimize the gypsum mold temperatures for pressed PEEK, and to estimate the impact, tensile strength and flexural properties of pressed and milled PEEK. Where appropriate, these properties were compared with those of PMMA.

Materials and Methods

Since the mold temperature could affect the properties of the injected parts, the temperature of 20 gypsum specimens was monitored using the multi-thermocouple system (n = 5). A total of 210 specimens were prepared for mechanical tests according to the ISO standard for denture base polymer (n = 10). The Izod impact, tensile strength, and flexural behavior were assessed. PEEK-OptimaNI1 (PEEK-pressed) was tested after processing via the pressing method at4 different mold temperatures. Machining PEEK-Juvora (PEEK-milled) specimens were prepared using the CAD-CAM production method. Data were analyzed via one-way ANOVA performed at a confidence level of 95% and a significant P-value of (P ≤ 0.05).

Results

In comparison to the furnace temperature more heat was required to preheat the gypsum mold up to 100, 150, 175 and 200 °C for pressing purposes. The highest impact strength was 5.7 kJ/m² for PEEK-pressed at 100 °C mold temperature and 4 kJ/m² for PEEK-milled. The latter had a higher tensile strength of 118 MPa. The best result for PEEK-pressed was 97 MPa at 200 °C mold temperature. Under a 4-point bending test, Young’s modulus of PEEK-milled was 5591 MPa, while the highest for PEEK-pressed was 4936 MPa at 200 °C mold temperature.

Conclusions

Compared to PMMA, given the superior mechanical properties of PEEK, it may become the material of choice for future use. Dentures constructed from PEEK polymer could well be routinely constructed in the near future.

Behavior of PMMA Denture Base Materials Containing Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles: A Literature Review

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO₂NP) have gained interest in the dental field because of their multiple uses in addition to their antimicrobial effect. One of the applications in dentistry involves the incorporation into poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) resin. However, there is a lack of evidence on their effects on the behavior of the resulting nanocomposite. Therefore, the present review aims to screen literatures for data related to PMMA/TiO₂ nanocomposite to figure out the properties of TiO₂ nanoparticles, methods of addition, interaction with PMMA resin matrix, and finally the addition effects on the properties of introduced nanocomposite and evidence on its clinical performance. Regardless of the latest research progress of PMMA/TiO₂ nanocomposite, the questionable properties of final nanocomposite and the lack of long-term clinical evidence addressing their performance restrict their wide clinical use. A conclusive connection between nanoparticle size or addition method and nanocomposite properties could not be established.

Green synthesis of titanium dioxide nanoparticles with volatile oil of Eugenia caryophyllata for enhanced antimicrobial activities

Different chemo-physical methods are used to synthesise titanium oxide nanoparticles (TiO₂ NPs), which are often expensive, unfriendly to the environment, toxic, not biocompatible, with a small yield. To resolve these problems, the researchers use green procedures to synthesise TiO₂-NPs by plant extracts of Capsicum annum L. and Allium cepa (onion) and characterise using atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electronic microscopy, X-ray diffraction, ultraviolet (UV)-visible (Vis) spectra and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results indicate that most NPs synthesised by the first and second procedures of onion had an average diameter of 95.7 and 89.1 nm, while NPs synthesised by C. annum had an average diameter of 103.60 and 90.07 nm, respectively. In UV-Vis spectra, strong absorption was below 470 nm, and energy gap was 3.3 eV in each of the first procedure of A. cepa and the second procedure of C. annum compared with 270 nm, 6.3 eV for each of the second procedure of A. cepa and the first procedure of C. annum. The antimicrobial activities of NPs were evaluated and an attempt was made to enhance these activities by Eugenia caryophyllata plant's oil in combination therapies. There were synergistic effects between NPs and plant's oil.

Evaluation of Flexural Strength of Different Denture Base Materials Reinforced with Different Nanoparticles

PURPOSE

To evaluate the effect of adding Al₂ O₃ , SiO₂ , and TiO₂ nanoparticles in ratios of 1, 3, and 5 wt% to different acrylic resins on flexural strength.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A total of 210 specimens were prepared in 30 groups (n = 7/group) (Control, 1% Al₂ O₃ , 3% Al₂ O₃ , 5% Al₂ O₃ , 1% SiO₂ , 3% SiO₂ , 5% SiO₂ , 1% TiO₂ , 3% TiO₂ , 5% TiO₂ ). The specimens were polished with 200-, 400-, and 600-grit abrasive paper to provide a standard surface before testing and then suspended in distilled water for 30 days. Flexural strength was measured via three-point bending tests. Subsequently, SEM analysis was performed for one specimen from each group. Homogeneity of data was assessed by Kolmogov-Smirnov test followed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

There was a significant increase in the flexural strength of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) after addition of 1% nanoparticles in both heat-polymerized and autopolymerized acrylic resins (p ˂ 0.05). The flexural strength values of the groups to which Al₂ O₃ and TiO₂ nanoparticles were added exceeded those of the group with SiO₂ addition (p ˂ 0.05). The electron microscopy images revealed that the nanoparticles were more homogeneously dispersed in PMMA with higher flexural strength.

CONCLUSIONS

The mechanical properties of PMMA can be improved by the addition of nanoparticles to PMMA; however, the flexural strength values of PMMA decrease with the addition of nanoparticles at higher percentages (3-5%). Hence, the ideal filler ratio corresponds to 1%.

Effects of incorporation of 2.5 and 5 wt% TiO2 nanotubes on fracture toughness, flexural strength, and microhardness of denture base poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA)

PURPOSE

The aim of this preliminary study was to investigate, for the first time, the effects of addition of titania nanotubes (n-TiO2) to poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) on mechanical properties of PMMA denture base.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

TiO2 nanotubes were prepared using alkaline hydrothermal process. Obtained nanotubes were assessed using FESEM-EDX, XRD, and FT-IR. For 3 experiments of this study (fracture toughness, three-point bending flexural strength, and Vickers microhardness), 135 specimens were prepared according to ISO 20795-1:2013 (n of each experiment=45). For each experiment, PMMA was mixed with 0% (control), 2.5 wt%, and 5 wt% nanotubes. From each TiO2:PMMA ratio, 15 specimens were fabricated for each experiment. Effects of n-TiO2 addition on 3 mechanical properties were assessed using Pearson, ANOVA, and Tukey tests.

RESULTS

SEM images of n-TiO2 exhibited the presence of elongated tubular structures. The XRD pattern of synthesized n-TiO2 represented the anatase crystal phase of TiO2. Moderate to very strong significant positive correlations were observed between the concentration of n-TiO2 and each of the 3 physicomechanical properties of PMMA (Pearson's P value ≤.001, correlation coefficient ranging between 0.5 and 0.9). Flexural strength and hardness values of specimens modified with both 2.5 and 5 wt% n-TiO2 were significantly higher than those of control (P≤.001). Fracture toughness of samples reinforced with 5 wt% n-TiO2 (but not those of 2.5% n-TiO2) was higher than control (P=.002).

CONCLUSION

Titania nanotubes were successfully introduced for the first time as a means of enhancing the hardness, flexural strength, and fracture toughness of denture base PMMA.

TiO2-Nanofillers Effects on Some Properties of Highly- Impact Resin Using Different Processing Techniques

Background:

The criteria of conventional curing of polymethyl methacrylate do not match the standard properties of the denture base materials.

Objectives:

This research was conducted to investigate the addition of TiO₂ nano practical on impact strength, thermal conductivity and color stability of acrylic resin cured by microwave in comparison to the conventional cured of heat-polymerized acrylic resin.

Materials and Methods:

120 specimens made of high impact acrylic resin were divided into two main groups according to the type of curing (water bath, microwave), then each group was subdivided into two groups according to the addition of 3% TiO₂ nano-fillers and control group (without the addition of TiO₂ 0%). Each group was subdivided according to the type of test into 3 groups with 10 specimens for each group. Data were statistically analyzed using Student t-test to detect the significant differences between tested and control groups at significance level (P<0.05).

Results:

According to curing type methods, the results showed that there was a significant decrease in impact strength of microwaved cured resin, but there was no significant difference in the thermal conductivity and color stability of resin. In addition, by using nanofiller, there was a significant increase in the impact strength and color stability with the addition of 3% TiO₂ nanofillers, but no significant difference was found in the thermal conductivity of the acrylic resin.

Conclusion:

The microwave curing of acrylic resin had no change in the color stability and thermal conductivity in comparison to the water bath, but the impact strength was decreased. The addition of 3% TiO₂ improved the impact and the color stability, but the thermal conductivity did not change.
