The prevalence of Gasterophilus intestinalis (Diptera: Oestridae) in donkeys (Equus asinus) in Egypt with special reference to larvicidal effects of neem seed oil extract (Azadirachta indica) on third stage larvae

Innovative molecular and immunological approaches of heterophyiasis infecting some Egyptian marketed fishes

Heterophyiasis is a highly endemic disease in the Nile Delta, Egypt, where people consume raw or undercooked Oreochromis niloticus and Mugil cephalus. Birds and rats play a crucial role in fish-borne zoonotic trematode transmission since they serve as natural and experimental hosts. This study aimed to update the epidemiological information, morphological description, molecular identification and gene expression of two distinct heterophyid metacercariae in Giza, Wadi Al-Rayan, and Lake Manzala, Egypt, whereas various heterophyid infections could be expected. The present Centrocestus formosanus, Heterophyes heterophyes, and Heterophyes nocens with accession numbers OR947651.1, OR947700.1, and OR947719.1, respectively, matched with those recorded in the GenBank. Findings of the current investigation indicated that various cytokines like IL-1β, MHC-II, and TNF-α rapidly elevated in the infected pigeon's intestines. Additionally, the infection expanded due to the parasite's ejection from the host and the host's clinical affliction, which induced humoral immune responses. Interestingly, investigation of other trematode species is in extreme demand in terms of zoonoses. We suggest controlling snails, managing migratory birds, and examining and frying fishes to the point when the encysted metacercariae is destroyed.

Moringa oleifera as a Natural Alternative for the Control of Gastrointestinal Parasites in Equines: A Review

Studies have shown a wide variety of parasites that infect horses, causing major gastrointestinal damage that can lead to death, and although the main method of control has been synthetic anthelmintics, there are parasites that have developed resistance to these drugs. For generations, plants have been used throughout the world as a cure or treatment for countless diseases and their symptoms, as is the case of Moringa oleifera, a plant native to the western region. In all its organs, mainly in leaves, M. oleifera presents a diversity of bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, tannins, phenolic acids, saponins, and vitamins, which provide antioxidant power to the plant. The compounds with the greatest antiparasitic activity are tannins and saponins, and they affect both the larvae and the oocytes of various equine gastrointestinal parasites. Therefore, M. oleifera is a promising source for the natural control of gastrointestinal parasites in horses.

Unravelling the anthelmintic bioactives from Jasminum grandiflorum L. subsp. Floribundum adopting in vitro biological assessment

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE

Jasminum grandiflorum L. is a medicinal plant widely used in the traditional system of Medicine as an anthelmintic in ringworm infections, for treating ulcers, stomatitis, skin diseases, and wounds.

AIM OF THE STUDY

The emergence of resistance by different parasites to currently used chemicals has been reported. There are increasing needs for more effective and safer parasiticides. Therefore, the current study was designed to investigate the methanolic extract of the aerial parts of J. grandiflorum subsp. Floribundum (JGTE) to confirm its traditional uses as anthelmintic through a bioassay-guided fractionation and isolation of the active components with anthelmintic activity.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The JGTE was partitioned into dichloromethane (DCM-F) and n-butanol (BuOH-F) fractions. The JGTE, fractions, and the isolated compounds were tested in vitro for their anthelmintic activity using two nematodes; one larval stage of cestode and one arthropod. Four major compounds were isolated from the most active fraction (BuOH-F) including two flavonoids and two secoirridoid glycosides, identified as kaempferol-3-O-neohesperoside (1), rutin (2), oleuropein (3), and ligstroside (4).

RESULTS

Among the isolated compounds from most active fraction (BuOH-F), rutin (2) displayed the highest anthelmintic activity in a dose-dependent activity with IC₅₀ of 41.04 μg/mL against H. muscae adult worm, followed by ligstroside (4) with IC₅₀ of 50.56 μg/mL.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings could advocate the traditional use of J. grandiflorum L. and provide further insight into the anthelmintic activity of flavonoids.

The family Oestridae in Egypt and Saudi Arabia (Diptera, Oestroidea)

All known taxa of the family Oestridae (superfamily Oestroidea) in both Egypt and Saudi Arabia are systematically catalogued herein. Three oestrid subfamilies have been recorded in Saudi Arabia and/or Egypt by six genera: Gasterophilus (Gasterophilinae), Hypoderma, Przhevalskiana (Hypodermatinae), Cephalopina, Oestrus, and Rhinoestrus (Oestrinae). Five Gasterophilus spp. have been recorded in Egypt, namely, G. haemorrhoidalis (Linnaeus), G. intestinalis (De Geer), G. nasalis (Linnaeus), G. nigricornis (Loew), and G. pecorum (Fabricius). Only two of these species have also been recorded in Saudi Arabia, namely: G. intestinalis (De Geer) and G. nasalis (Linnaeus). The subfamily Hypodermatinae is represented in the two countries by only four species in two genera, namely, H. bovis (Linnaeus) and H. desertorum Brauer (in Egypt only), and H. lineatum (Villers) (in Saudi Arabia only) and Przhevalskiana silenus (Brauer) (in both countries). The subfamily Oestrinae is represented by two widely distributed species in both countries, namely, C. titillator (Clark) and O. ovis (L.), in addition to another species represented in Egypt only, R. purpureus (Brauer). For each species, synonymies, type localities, distribution, Egyptian and Saudi Arabian localities with coordinates, and collection dates are presented.
