[Mental Health Inventory - 5 (MHI-5) in peruvian adolescents: preliminary validation study]

OBJECTIVE

Given the evidence missing from validity studies that replicate the internal structure of the Mental Health Inventory - 5 (MHI-5) in Peruvian adolescents, this study performs a preliminary evaluation of the psychometric properties of MHI-5, specifically its internal structure.

METHODS

The sample was 75 students of both sexes from a private high school-level educational institution, in the Casma city (Lima, Peru). The analysis was performed by applying a confirmatory factor analysis approach within the modeling of structural equations.

RESULTS

A single significant dimension was found to be viable for interpreting the scores, but the fit was substantially improved when a factor was introduced that represented the effect of two item negative phrasing. On the other hand, the internal consistency was greater than .70, and it is considered satisfactory given its brevity.

CONCLUSIONS

It is concluded that the MHI-5 maintains the essential one-dimensionality, but it is required to introduce the possible effect of the method due to the content of some of its items. Consistency reliability was acceptable for screening purposes. The following steps are discussed to accumulate more validity evidence, suggesting to develop a shorter version without the problematic items, to reduce the potential response bias.

Prevalence of mental health problems among rural adolescents in India: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Adolescent mental health problems have been recognised as a major issue in low-income countries including India. Through a meta-analytic approach, the present review delineate the overall prevalence of each of the most discussed mental health problems among rural adolescents in India, comprising depression, anxiety disorders, generalised anxiety disorder, panic disorder, separation anxiety, social anxiety disorder, suicidality, hyperactivity, emotional problems, conduct problems and peer problems. The review also presents the potential determinants of such mental health problems. Using PRISMA guidelines, a total of thirty-five studies were finalized from databases such as PubMed, Science Direct, JSTOR, Web of Science, Google Scholar and ProQuest. From the findings, it is observed that male and female adolescents does not differ significantly in the prevalence of most mental health problems. However, social anxiety was found to be more prevalent among females when compared to males. In meta-regression, factors like tools used (screening tools vs diagnostic interviews), sample size, setting (school-based vs community-based), sampling technique and year of publication were found to influence the prevalence rates of certain mental health problems, reported in the studies. Major determinants influencing the prevalence of mental health problems in rural adolescents were age, socio-economic status, academic and family environment. Individual factors such as social media usage, physical activity, and substance use also contribute to mental health problems. As India accounts for one-fifth of the world's adolescent population, the findings of this review can have global implications.

Adolescent Soccer Athletes’ Irrational Beliefs About Basic Psychological Needs are Related to Their Emotional Intelligence and Mental Health

There has been a scarcity of research regarding the unique mental health risk factors that adolescent athletes face. The recently proposed Rational Emotive Self Determination Scale for Adolescents (RESD-A) has been suggested to understand some of the antecedent and associative factors of adolescent athlete mental health. The principal aim of this study is to examine the structural and criterion validity of the RESD-A in an athlete sample for the first time. To achieve this aim, two hundred and forty-two club level soccer athletes participated in the study. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted to test the validity of the RESD-A’s factor structure. Partial correlation analyses with the subscales of RESD-A, emotional intelligence, and mental health scores were used to examine criterion validity. Initial results for the structural and criterion validity of the RESD-A with an athlete population are promising. The potential importance, limitations and directions for future research are discussed.

DetectaWeb-Distress Scale: A Global and Multidimensional Web-Based Screener for Emotional Disorder Symptoms in Children and Adolescents

Emotional disorder symptoms are highly prevalent and a common cause of disability among children and adolescents. Screening and early detection are needed to identify those who need help and to improve treatment outcomes. Nowadays, especially with the arrival of the COVID-19 outbreak, assessment is increasingly conducted online, resulting in the need for brief online screening measures. The aim of the current study was to examine the reliability and different sources of validity evidence of a new web-based screening questionnaire for emotional disorder symptoms, the DetectaWeb-Distress Scale, which assesses mood (major depression and dysthymic disorder), anxiety (separation anxiety, generalized anxiety, social phobia, panic disorder/agoraphobia, and specific phobia), obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, suicidality (suicidal ideation, plans, and attempts), and global distress. A total of 1,499 participants (aged 8-18) completed the DetectaWeb-Distress Scale and specific questionnaires for emotional disorder symptoms, suicidal behaviors, and well-being through a web-based survey. Results indicated that a structural model of 10 correlated factors fits reasonably better in comparison to the remaining models; measurement invariance for age and gender; good internal consistency (McDonald's ω ranging from 0.65 to 0.94); and significant positive correlation with other measures of anxiety, depression, PTSD, or distress, and negative correlation with well-being measures, displaying support for convergent-discriminant validity. We also found that girls scored higher than boys on most of the subscales, and children had higher scores for social anxiety, specific phobia, panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms, whereas adolescents scored higher on depressive symptoms, suicidality, and generalized anxiety, but the effect sizes were small to medium for all comparisons. The DetectaWeb-Distress Scale is a valid, innovative, and useful online tool for the screening and evaluation of preventive programs for mental health in children and adolescents.

Occupational Stress and Employees Complete Mental Health: A Cross-Cultural Empirical Study

Given the shortcomings of previous research on occupational stress and mental health (e.g., predominantly in Western, educated, industrialized, rich and democratic (WEIRD) societies, based on the traditional mental health model and a lack of comparative studies), this study aimed to (a) examine the relationship between occupational stress and complete mental health among employees in Cabo Verde and China, and also explored the mediation and moderation roles of burnout and optimism in accounting for the empirical link. Mental health was defined as comprised of two distinguishable factors: positive and negative mental health. The Pearson correlation test, structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis, bootstrap analysis, hierarchical moderated regression and an independent t-test were used to analyze the data. The results indicated that, in both countries, occupational stress showed a negative relation to positive mental health and lower psychopathology symptoms—and job burnout mediated the relation between occupational stress and mental health. Optimism moderated the relation between occupational stress and burnout, but not the relation between occupational stress and complete mental health. The results are interpreted in light of the comparative framework.

The Revised Mental Health Inventory-5 (MHI-5) as an ultra-brief screening measure of bidimensional mental health in children and adolescents

The Mental Health Inventory-5 (MHI-5) is a brief, valid, and reliable international instrument for assessing mental health in adults. The aim of the present study is to examine the psychometric properties of the MHI-5 in children and adolescents. A sample of 595 students (10-15 years old) completed the MHI-5 Spanish version adapted for this study, as well as another measure of anxiety and depression symptoms, and a clinical interview as a gold standard. The overall coefficient obtained indicate good internal consistency. A unique factor solution explaining a 53.70% and a two-factor structure explaining 69.20% of the total variance were obtained. The correlations with total and subscale scores of anxiety and depression were significant. A ROC analysis showed good properties as a screening test to predict anxiety and depressive diagnoses in children and adolescents. The Revised MHI-5 presents two essential changes: a simplified 4-point response format and a new factor solution including distress and well-being. These outcomes show that the Revised MHI-5 is a brief, valid, and reliable measure to bidimensionally assess mental health and screening emotional disorders in children and adolescents.

Psychometric testing of the mental health inventory in an Arabian context: Cross-cultural validation study

AIM

The aim of this study is to establish a valid and reliable culturally adapted instrument which can be used in the Arabian context to measure emotional well-being.

DESIGN

The Mental Health Inventory tool was used to investigate the emotional well-being of Saudi nursing students. The instrument was originally developed in English and in a western cultural setting. As such, there was a need to translate and validate the instrument in Arabic for use in the Arabian setting.

METHODS

The Arabic version MHI 38 (AV-MHI-38) was translated, reviewed and revised, then evaluated with a sample of Arabic-speaking nursing students from Saudi Arabia using cross-sectional multicentre survey approach. An iterative forward-backward-forward sequence of item translation and review by a bilingual and bicultural expert panel was then completed. The psychometric properties of the AV-MHI-38 were examined through an exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, correlation among factors and reliability assessment.

RESULTS

The sample consisted of 252 nursing students from two different universities located in different geographic regions in Saudi Arabia. The mean age was 20.93 years, made up of 230 female and 22 male participants. An a priori two-factor model showed satisfactory fit with modifications. Results indicated two component AV-MHI-38 with 46.09% of the total variance and excellent internal consistency. The AV-MHI-38 had good psychometric properties and the two subscales had good internal consistency with Cronbach's and acceptable reliability measures. The AV-MHI can be used to assess emotional well-being among Arabic-speaking populations of nursing students, nurses and other healthcare providers. The instrument can be used to identify the emotional well-being of students and initiating strategies to support them to decrease their study and work-related stress, anxiety and depression.

Increased Substance Use and Poorer Mental Health in Adolescents With Problematic Musculoskeletal Pain

Study Design Cross-sectional study. Background Adolescents with musculoskeletal pain are thought to be at greater risk of modifiable health risk behaviors, but little is known about these behaviors in adolescents with problematic pain. Objective To describe the prevalence of substance use (tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption, and illicit drugs) and poor mental health in adolescents with problematic musculoskeletal pain, compared to those without such pain. Methods Data on self-reported pain, substance use, and poor mental health were collected from 1831 year 9 students (age range, 14-16 years). Participants were considered to have problematic pain if they reported experiencing pain at least monthly over a 6-month period that also required medication or impacted 1 or more of the following: school or work, daily activities, and leisure or sporting activities. Results Almost half (46%) of the participants experienced problematic pain. Adolescents with problematic pain, compared to those without pain, reported higher substance use and poorer mental health: tobacco smoking in the last 4 weeks, 12% versus 7% (odds ratio [OR] = 1.76; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.25, 2.28); alcohol consumption in the last 4 weeks, 30% versus 20% (OR = 1.68; 95% CI: 1.34, 2.11); illicit drug use, 13% versus 6% (OR = 2.18; 95% CI: 1.55, 3.07); lower Mental Health Inventory scores (β = -11.43; standard error [SE], 0.96; P<.05), indicating poorer mental health; and higher Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire total scores (β = 3.67; SE, 0.29; P<.05), indicating greater difficulties. Conclusion Adolescents with problematic pain report higher smoking, alcohol use, and use of illicit drugs and poorer mental health than adolescents without problematic pain. The experience of problematic pain could be an important consideration for substance use and chronic disease prevention. Resilience in the face of peer victimisation and discrimination: The who, when and why in five patterns of adjustment

Victimisation has a negative effect on psychosocial functioning. Based on the resilience theory, and with a sample of 2975 Portuguese students, the present study aims to: i) identify patterns of adjustment in the face of peer victimisation and perceptions of discrimination; ii) explore the association between the patterns of adjustment and the characteristics of participants (the who) and of the victimisation (the when and why). Cluster analysis revealed five patterns of adjustment: Unchallenged; Externally Maladjusted; Internally Maladjusted; Resilient, and At-Risk. The results suggest that there is no complete resilience in the face of social victimisation. Group differences were found regarding: i) gender, type of course, sexual orientation, ethnicity, nationality, parental educational level and religious beliefs; ii) the age at which peer victimisation was more frequent, and; iii) the motives underlying discrimination. Globally considered, peer victimisation is representative of the wider cultural environment and interventions should also target social prejudices.

Meta-Analyses of Predictors of Hope in Adolescents

The purposes of this study were to identify predictors of hope in the literature reviewed, to use meta-analysis to determine the mean effect size (ES) across studies between each predictor and hope, and to examine four moderators on each predictor–hope relationship. Using preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines for the literature reviewed, 77 published studies or doctoral dissertations completed between 1990 and 2012 met the inclusion criteria. Eleven predictors of hope were identified and each predictor in relation to hope was subjected to meta-analysis. Five predictors (positive affect, life satisfaction, optimism, self-esteem, and social support) of hope had large mean ESs, 1 predictor (depression) had a medium ES, 4 predictors (negative affect, stress, academic achievement, and violence) had small ESs, and 1 predictor (gender) had a trivial ES. Findings are interpreted for the 11 predictors in relation to hope. Limitations and conclusions are addressed; future studies are recommended.

Validation of a Portuguese Version of the Snyder Hope Scale in a Sample of High School Students

C. R. Snyder conceptualized hope as a cognitive construct that reflects people’s motivation and capacity to strive toward personally relevant goals. Using this definition, Snyder and colleagues developed and validated the Hope Scale (HS). This study is the first study to examine the psychometric properties of the HS in a sample of high school students ( N = 1,012 Portuguese students). Reliability, factor structure, and criterion-related validity were investigated. The results support the psychometric properties of the scale, as well as the two-factor structure of Agency and Pathways. Findings from this study suggest that the HS can be used with high school students and Portuguese-speaking samples.

ADad 3: the epidemiology of Anxiety Disorders among adolescents in a rural community population in India

OBJECTIVES

Despite being the most common mental health concern, there is paucity of literature on the epidemiology of anxiety disorders among the adolescent population in India. This study aimed to estimate the period prevalence of Anxiety Disorders (AD) among 11 to 19 y old adolescents in India.

METHODS

A representative sample of adolescents (N = 500) from a rural community in Southern India was assessed for the period prevalence of all and specific Anxiety Disorders using Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders (SCARED), and confirmed in a subsequent interview with Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children/Present and Lifetime Version (K-SADS-PL).

RESULTS

The prevalence for all AD using the international, Indian SCARED cut-offs and DSM-IV-TR criteria was 8.6 % (boys = 2%; girls = 6.6%), 25.8% (boys = 6.6%; girls = 19.2%) and 14.4 % (boys = 4.8%; girls = 9.6%) respectively. There were significant gender differences in the prevalence for all Anxiety Disorders (χ (2) = 3.61, df = 1; P < 0.05), Separation Anxiety Disorder (χ (2) = 22.27, df = 1; P < 0.001) and Social Anxiety Disorder (χ(2) = 4.29, df = 1; P < 0.03). Significant age difference in the prevalence of Panic Disorder (χ(2) = 10.32; df = 1; P = 0.00) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (χ(2) = 5.87; df = 1; P = 0.05) was noted.

CONCLUSIONS

The prevalence of Anxiety Disorders in South Indian adolescents was higher than found in the western literature. Prevalence of specific AD was age and gender specific. Adolescent and mental health policies must integrate anxiety disorder of public health significance.

Concurrent trajectories of BMI and mental health patterns in emerging adulthood

Affective disorders and weight status have been consistently linked in childhood and adult research, and this comorbidity has synergistic effects leading to more severe health consequences. We map the co-development of these developmental processes in the U.S. National Longitudinal Survey of Youth - 1997 (NLSY97) cohort ages 15 to 27 to inform the targeting of public health interventions. We estimate profiles of youth mental health and weight status through parallel process growth mixture modeling within a person-centered framework controlling for race/ethnicity, gender, and poverty status. Fit statistics indicate a 5-class parallel process model for the concurrent trajectories of BMI and mental health. The concurrent trajectories model reveals latent class trajectories of "stable normal weight, stable good mental health" (82.2%); "consistently obese, stable good mental health" (6.8%); "overweight becoming obese, declining mental health" (5.6%); "stable normal weight, improving mental health" (3.3%); and "morbid obesity, stable good mental health" (2.1%). The risk of developmental trajectories of poor mental health and BMI outcomes is greater for females, blacks, Hispanics, and individuals living below the poverty line. These results should help public health professionals to better target subpopulations approaching or already experiencing developmental pathways of risk for poor mental health and weight comorbidities. Multilevel investigation of lifestyle and contextual factors will foster further refinement of public health interventions.
