Abstract
The influence of the frequency of reading and writing habits (FRWH) on cognition has been investigated by several studies in the literature. However, the implications of FRWH on executive development, intelligence, and academic achievement are not yet clear in adolescents with healthy development. The aim was to verify whether there are differences in executive functions, intelligence, and academic achievement between adolescents with high and low FRWH. Moreover, we aimed to investigate if there are differences in the parental FRWH between adolescents with high and low FRWH. The sample was composed of 47 healthy adolescents, n = 24 with high FRWH and n = 23 with low FRWH. Adolescents with higher FRWH had better performance on measures of vocabulary, Speech Act analysis, and Oral Narrative Discourse. Therefore, a high FRWH has a positive influence on the cognitive development of healthy adolescents, especially with regard to pragmatic language. However, adolescents with low FRWH performed better than those with a high FRWH on an automatic counting task. The interpretation of cognitive performance and academic achievement scores in neuropsychological assessment should consider the FRWH of parents and adolescents. This factor should be targeted by early stimulation interventions to help adolescents achieve the highest possible levels of global development.

Abstract
Introduction: Reading disability (RD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
symptoms often co-occur in school-age children. Methods: The present study evaluated the performance of 216 Brazilian children from
3rd and 4th grades on “cool” executive function
(EF) abilities and phonological processing. The children were divided into
three groups: those with ADHD symptoms only, those with RD only, and
controls. Results: MANOVA analyses, controlling for age and nonverbal intelligence, showed worse
performance for the RD group, compared to the ADHD symptoms group, on
measures of phonological processing (phonemic awareness, phonological
short-term memory, and lexical access) and “cool” EF components
(orthographic verbal fluency and processing speed). The ADHD symptoms group
did not differ from the control group on the majority of the “cool” EF
tasks. Compared to the control group, the ADHD symptoms group and the RD
group both showed significantly more errors in rapid automatized naming of
figures, which evaluates the inhibition component of EF; performance on this
task was similar for these groups. Conclusion: We conclude that children with RD have greater impairment in phonological
processing and “cool” EF compared to those with ADHD symptoms. Furthermore,
deficits in inhibitory control may be shared among children with both
conditions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Verbal fluency (VF) tasks are widely used to investigate children's lexical knowledge and executive functions skills. Consistency of measurement of the strategic retrieval components is still an issue and performance of Brazilian-Portuguese speaking children are currently not available. A cross-sectional study investigated the effects of age, school type (public × private) and the influence of language, memory and inhibitory control on VF. METHOD We assessed 414 Brazilian children, aged 6-12, in the number of words produced and both clustering and switching components, with two measures of VF: letter (LVF) and semantic (SVF). RESULTS Analysis of the number of words produced showed a significant increase between 6-8-year-olds, 9-10-year-olds and 11-12-year-olds in SVF, while in LVF, the differences were significant only in the later age group. In SVF, the numbers of clusters and switches increased with age, whereas in LVF, the number of switches increased in all age groups, but clusters increased only in the older group. Structural equation model analyses showed that oral and written language, verbal memory and inhibitory control are associated with VF performance and IQ, while age mediated VF performance. CONCLUSIONS The results indicate a different development pattern between LVF and SVF in the number of words produced and in clustering and switching, with the latter predicting VF performance in words produced. VF development is shown to depend on language, memory and inhibitory control. Our results have important implications to clinical neuropsychology.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to examine the cognitive function and depressive traits most frequently associated with the clinical assessment of patients with epilepsy and if these clinical parameters are linked to glycolipid levels and inflammatory and apoptotic markers. METHODS Patients with epilepsy (n = 32) and healthy subjects (n = 41) were recruited to participate in this study. Neuropsychological evaluation was performed in both groups through a battery of cognitive tests. Inflammatory markers, apoptotic factors, and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) damage were measured in blood samples. Additionally, the metabolic markers total cholesterol (CHO), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), triglyceride (TG), and glucose (GLU) levels were analyzed. RESULTS Statistical analyses showed that patients with epilepsy presented decreased scores in memory, attention, language, and executive function tests compared with the control group. Analysis revealed that there was negative correlation in epilepsy for seizure duration vs. oral language (R = -0.4484, p < 0.05) and seizure duration vs. problem solving (executive functions) (R = -0.3995, p < 0.05). This was also observed when comparing depression with temporal-spatial orientation (TSO) (R = -0.39, p < 0.05). Furthermore, we observed a higher depression score in patients with epilepsy than in the healthy ones. Statistical analyses showed higher acetylcholinesterase (AChE) (p < 0.05), interleukin 1β (IL-1β, p < 0.001), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) (p < 0.001) levels compared with those in the control group. Moreover, patients with epilepsy had significantly higher serum levels of caspase 3 (CASP 3) (p < 0.001) and Picogreen (p < 0.001) compared with the control subjects. Regarding the metabolic markers, higher glycolipid levels were observed in the patients with epilepsy (CHO < 0.05*, LDL < 0.0001*, TG < 0.05*, GLU p < 0.05). High-density lipoprotein levels were not significant. The patients with epilepsy had significant correlation when comparing total language with TNF-α (R = -0.4, p < 0.05), praxes with CASP 3 (R = -0.52, p < 0.01), total CHO with total language (R = -0.48, p < 0.05), TG with semantic memory (R = -0.54, p < 0.05), TG with prospective memory (R = -0.2165, p < 0.02), TG with total memory (R = -0.53, p < 0.02), and GLU with total attention (R = -0.62, p < 0.002). CONCLUSION This study supports the evidence of a distinct neuropsychological profile between patients with epilepsy and healthy subjects. Furthermore, our findings suggest that inflammatory pathway, glycolipid profile, and depressive factors may be associated with cognitive dysfunction in patients with epilepsy.

Abstract
Drawing from just world theory and system justification theory, this study explores how privileged status influences perceptions of justice. Data from 475 Brazilian adolescents across three schools shed light on how adolescents' social demographics (ethnicity, education, and income) influence their perceptions of fairness. Adolescents from higher income or educational privilege backgrounds had higher personal belief in a just world (BJW), and better perceptions of legal authorities, but lower general BJW. The opposite was true for less privileged adolescents, indicating that those from lower income homes are less likely to differentiate between personal and general BJW. Contrary to the hypothesis, ethnicity was not a significant variable, but the results were in the expected direction. This research is discussed under the framework of system justification theory and just world theory and provides insight into how the theories complement each other in socially unequal contexts.

Abstract
Although the impact of education and age on executive functions (EF) has been widely studied, the influence of daily cognitive stimulation on EF has not been sufficiently investigated. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to evaluate whether the age, education, and frequency of reading and writing habits (FRWH) of healthy adults could predict their performance on measures of inhibition and cognitive flexibility. Inhibition speed, inhibitory control, and set shifting were assessed using speed, accuracy, and discrepancy scores on the Trail-Making Test (TMT) and Hayling Test. Demographic characteristics and the FRWH were assessed using specialized questionnaires. Regression analyses showed that age and the FRWH predicted speed and accuracy on the TMT. The FRWH predicted both speed and accuracy on the Hayling Test, for which speed and accuracy scores were also partly explained by age and education, respectively. Surprisingly, only the FRWH was associated with Hayling Test discrepancy scores, considered one of the purest EF measures. This highlights the importance of regular cognitive stimulation over the number of years of formal education on EF tasks. Further studies are required to investigate the role of the FRWH so as to better comprehend its relationship with EF and general cognition.
