Abstract
BACKGROUND Rabies is a zoonosis usually transmitted to mammals via contact between the saliva of infected animals and either the skin or mucosa of the attacked individual, and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is the only way to avoid the disease. This study aimed to perform a descriptive analysis of PEP after attacks by dogs and cats in the state of São Paulo. METHODS We analyzed the disease compulsory notification forms Human Anti-Rabies Care (CID10: W64), available in the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN), from 2013 to 2017. Treatment adequacy was analyzed according to the parameters established by the Brazilian Health Ministry. RESULTS A total of 572,889 notifications were reported during the study period, 94.1% (538,975) of which corresponded to dog or cat attacks, with an occurrence of 26.9 cases per 10,000 inhabitants. Among the recommended procedures, the most frequent was the observation of the animals for 10 days (44.4%), which was adopted inappropriately at a lower frequency. Prophylactic conduct was adequate in 68.8% of the cases, but only 55.5% of the individuals received adequate treatment. More than 112 thousand individuals (31,4%) received a correct recommendation for PEP but did not receive adequate treatment, leading to 246,787 doses of the vaccine and 8,888 doses of rabies immunoglobulin administered without following the recommendations of the Ministry of Health. CONCLUSIONS The use of immunobiologicals is excessive, indicating the need for investment in training health professionals to follow the recommendations of the Ministry of Health.

Abstract
The rabies virus (RABV) is characterized by a history dominated by host shifts within and among bats and carnivores. One of the main outcomes of long-term RABV maintenance in dogs was the establishment of variants in a wide variety of mesocarnivores. In this study, we present the most comprehensive phylogenetic and phylogeographic analysis, contributing to a better understanding of the origins, diversification, and the role of different host species in the evolution and diffusion of a dog-related variant endemic of South America. A total of 237 complete Nucleoprotein gene sequences were studied, corresponding to wild and domestic species, performing selection analyses, ancestral states reconstructions, and recombination analyses. This variant originated in Brazil and disseminated through Argentina and Paraguay, where a previously unknown lineage was found. A single host shift was identified in the phylogeny, from dog to the crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous) in the Northeast of Brazil. Although this process occurred in a background of purifying selection, there is evidence of adaptive evolution -or selection of sub-consensus sequences- in internal branches after the host shift. The interaction of domestic and wild cycles persisted after host switching, as revealed by spillover and putative recombination events.

Abstract
Rabies is an acute, progressive encephalitis caused by a lyssavirus, with the highest case fatality of any conventional infectious disease. More than 17 different lyssaviruses have been described, but rabies virus is the most widely distributed and important member of the genus. Globally, tens of thousands of human fatalities still occur each year. Although all mammals are susceptible, most human fatalities are caused by the bites of rabid dogs, within lesser developed countries. A global plan envisions the elimination of human rabies cases caused via dogs by the year 2030. The combination of prophylaxis of exposed humans and mass vaccination of dogs is an essential strategy for such success. Regionally, the Americas are well on the way to meet this goal. As one example of achievement, Costa Rica, a small country within Central America, reported the last autochthonous case of human rabies transmitted by a dog at the end of the 1970s. Today, rabies virus transmitted by the common vampire bat, Desmodus rotundus, as well as other wildlife, remains a major concern for humans, livestock, and other animals throughout the region. This review summarizes the historical occurrence of dog rabies and its elimination in Costa Rica, describes the current occurrence of the disease with a particular focus upon affected livestock, discusses the ecology of the vampire bat as the primary reservoir relevant to management, details the clinical characteristics of recent human rabies cases, and provides suggestions for resolution of global challenges posed by this zoonosis within a One Health context.

Abstract
Background: Animal bite due to the risk of rabies is a major public health problem. Rabies is of great importance because of fatalities and economic damage. Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the epidemiological patterns of animal bite in Najaf Abad during the years of 2012 to 2017. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. All records (4,104) were registered in the registration offices of animal bites during the years of 2012 to 2017 at the rabies treatment centres of Najafabad by census method. Demographic characteristics, animal type and sometime clinical patterns of the wounded were examined. Results: The mean age of the injured was 31.28 ± 15.28 years. Of the 4,104 injured, 3648 (88%) were male and the rest of them were women. In terms of residential area, 3645 people (88%) were in urban areas and the rest were in rural areas in the place of occurrence of bites. Most cases of animal biting occurred in dogs (70.9%) and then cat (24.3%). The most affected part was 51% with shoulder and hand. In this study, the incidence of animal bites is estimated as 100,000 people per year in Najaf Abad in in 2012 it was 206.4, with an increasing trend to 212.9 in 2019 (P < 0.001). Conclusion: The results of the study showed that most cases of animal bites were related to dogs, urban areas and male sex variables. The incidence of animal bites was also increasing. Due to the importance of this disease and its financial losses, it is recommended that prevention methods should be used to control stray dogs, vaccination of domesticated dogs and to raise awareness of the people.

Abstract
We developed a fast, rabies virus-free, in vitro method, based on a blocking ELISA (bELISA), to detect and accurately quantify anti-rabies glycoprotein antibodies in serum of several animal species. In this method, purified rabies virus-like particles (VLPs) are used as antigen to coat the plates, while the presence of specific rabies immunoglobulins is revealed through blocking the recognition of these VLPs by a biotinylated monoclonal antibody. A quality by design approach was carried out in order to optimize the method performance, improving the sensitivity and, thereby, reducing the limit of detection of this assay. After the method validation, we confirmed that the bELISA method is able to detect a concentration of 0.06 IU/mL rabies immunoglobulins, titer lower than the 0.5 IU/mL cutoff value established as indication for correct vaccination. Further, we assessed the correlation between bELISA, the MNT, and the Platelia methods, confirming the accuracy of this new assay. On the other hand, precision was evaluated, obtaining acceptable repeatability and intermediate precision values, showing that this bELISA could be proposed as a potential alternative method, replacing the gold standard techniques in vaccination schemes and becoming a routine control technique within regional rabies surveillance programs.
