Reducing the stress of mothers in the postpartum period: psychological inflexibility or mother-infant bonding

BACKGROUND

Parental stress is a critical problem because it affects both the mental health of the mother and children's development. In addition to many factors related to birth and marriage, mother - infant bonding and psychological inflexibility are essential factors that can affect stress. In this study, we examined the effects of the psychological processes of mothers and factors related to pregnancy, mother, environment on parental stress, and their relationships.

METHODS

A sociodemographic variables scale, Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II, Postpartum Bonding Questionnaire, and Parental Stress Scale were completed by 115 mothers in their first postpartum year. The model created with the correlation and regression results was subjected to path analysis.

RESULTS

Breastfeeding, psychological inflexibility, and mother - infant bonding are related to parental stress. The bonding problem is the mediator of the relationship between psychological inflexibility and parental stress. The entire effect of sleep quality on parental stress occurred through psychological inflexibility.

CONCLUSION

Efforts should be directed towards improving the bond between the mother and infant and enhancing the mother's psychological flexibility to lessen the negative impacts of stress. Breastfeeding should not be treated categorically, and its potential adverse effects should not be ignored.

Psychological maltreatment, meaning-centered coping, psychological flexibility, and suicide cognitions: A moderated mediation model

BACKGROUND

Mental health problems are currently diversifying, increasing the possibility of suicide. Exposure to psychological maltreatment is one of the factors that increases suicidal cognitions. In addition, psychological flexibility and meaning-centered approaches may be effective in coping with suicidal cognitions.

OBJECTIVE

A hypothesized model was tested to examine the relationships among psychological maltreatment, suicidal cognitions, psychological flexibility, and meaning-centered coping.

METHOD

Data were collected from a sample of 652 participants. Mediation and moderation analyses were conducted to examine the mediating and moderating role of psychological flexibility and meaning-centered coping in the relationship between childhood psychological maltreatment and suicide cognitions among Turkish adults.

RESULTS

The results of the study indicated significant negative and positive relationships between psychological maltreatment, suicide cognitions, psychological flexibility, and meaning-centered coping. The findings suggest that psychological flexibility and meaning-centered coping have a serial mediating effect on the relationship between psychological maltreatment and suicide cognitions. Furthermore, according to the study results, psychological flexibility plays a moderating role both between psychological maltreatment and suicidal cognitions and between meaning-centered coping and suicidal cognitions.

CONCLUSIONS

The study suggests that psychological maltreatment can be considered as a risk factor and meaning-centered coping and psychological flexibility as protective factors in suicide prevention studies.

The effects of psychological flexibility and resilience on psychopharmacological treatment response in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a challenging psychiatric condition to treat. Previous research has explored various aspects of treatment response, but limited attention has been given to the significance of psychological flexibility and resilience. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between psychological flexibility, resilience, and different dimensions of OCD, as well as their role in treatment response specifically concerning OCD symptom sub-dimensions. The study involved 50 OCD patients and 42 healthy individuals as controls. Participants completed the Dimensional Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (DOCS), Acceptance and Action Questionnaire (AAQ-2), and Resilience Scale for Adults (RS). Initial scale scores were compared to post-treatment scores obtained after a 3-month follow-up using pharmacotherapy. The patient group exhibited significantly higher AAQ-2 scores and lower RS scores compared to the control group. During the post-treatment follow-up, a reduction in DOCS and AAQ-2 scores was observed, along with an increase in RS scores. The impact of differences in AAQ-2 and RS scores on the change in DOCS total scores was analyzed using mixed model linear regression analysis. The results showed a statistically significant effect of changes in AAQ-2 and RS sub-dimension scores on the change in DOCS total scores. The findings highlight the importance of flexibility and resilience in influencing treatment response among patients with OCD. When conventional pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy approaches prove insufficient, interventions focused on enhancing flexibility and resilience may contribute to improved treatment outcomes.

Predictors of Procrastination in a Moderated Mediation Analysis: The Roles of Problematic Smartphone Use, Psychological Flexibility, and Gender

Research has revealed that problematic smartphone use is a cause of procrastination. This study investigated the predictive role of problematic smartphone use on procrastination with consideration of the mediating effect of psychological flexibility. The moderating role of gender in the frequency of checking smartphones was also tested in this mediational model. Of total, 471 undergraduate students (369 female, 102 male) with a mean age of 20.65 participated in the study. The study was conducted face to face in classroom settings, and the results of the analysis revealed that psychological flexibility indeed affected the relationship between problematic smart phone use and procrastination. In addition, moderated mediation analysis suggested that female university students were significantly impacted. Finally, it was observed that psychological flexibility played a significant role amongst the female university students surveyed in the relationship between problematic smart phone use and procrastination.

The mediating role of psychological flexibility in the relationship between psychotic symptom severity and depression in individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia

WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT THE SUBJECT?: Psychotic symptoms and depression are common problems in people diagnosed with schizophrenia. Psychological flexibility is a skill that facilitates coping with difficulties. There is limited research on the role of psychological flexibility in the relationship between psychotic symptoms and depression in people diagnosed with schizophrenia. WHAT DOES THE ARTICLE ADD TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: This article investigates the role of psychological flexibility in the link between psychotic symptom severity and depression in people diagnosed with schizophrenia. The article shows that psychological flexibility partially mediates the relationship between psychotic symptom severity and depression. The article suggests that interventions aimed at improving psychological flexibility may be beneficial in reducing depressive symptoms in people diagnosed with schizophrenia. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE?: Mental health nurses should consider psychotic symptom severity and psychological flexibility when assessing and intervening for depressive symptoms in people diagnosed with schizophrenia. Mental health nurses should receive training to improve psychological flexibility and pass this skill on to their patients. Mental health nurses should continue to research the effectiveness and outcomes of interventions aimed at improving psychological flexibility.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Psychological flexibility may help people diagnosed with schizophrenia (PWS) cope with their psychotic symptoms and reduce their depressive symptoms, but the mechanism of this effect is unclear.

AIM

To investigate whether psychological flexibility mediates the relationship between psychotic symptom severity and depression in PWS.

METHOD

A cross-sectional study was conducted, in which a total of 111 PWS were assessed with DSM-5 Clinician-Rated Dimensions of Psychosis Symptom Severity, Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia and Acceptance and Action Questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 25 and PROCESS macro.

RESULTS

Significant correlations were found between psychotic symptoms, depression and psychological flexibility. Psychological flexibility partially mediated the relationship between psychotic symptom severity and depression.

DISCUSSION

Psychological flexibility could weaken the impact of psychotic symptom severity on depression in PWS. Higher psychotic symptoms were associated with lower psychological flexibility and higher depression.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

Interventions to improve psychological flexibility may prevent depressive symptoms in PWS. Psychiatric nurses can use psychological flexibility as a goal for evaluation and intervention.

The relationship between psychological flexibility, self-compassion, and posttraumatic growth in cancer patients in the COVID-19 pandemic

PURPOSE

The COVID-19 pandemic may have an important long-term emotional impact on patients with cancer diagnosis, as they are in the high-risk group. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between self-compassion, psychological flexibility, and posttraumatic growth, and to examine whether psychological flexibility may serve as a mediator between self-compassion and posttraumatic growth.

METHODS

Two hundred fifty-three patients with cancer were included in the study. Sociodemographic and Clinical Features Data Form, Self-Compassion Scale (SCS), Freiburg Mindfulness Inventory (FMI), Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II (AAQ-II), Cognitive Fusion Questionnaire (CFQ), and Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI) were applied to all patients.

RESULTS

The multivariate analysis with independent variable SCS, FMI, AAQ-II, and CFQ scores explains 49% of the variance in PTGI (F(4,248) = 60,585, p < 0.001). SC and FMI scores were found to have a positive and AAQ-II and CFQ scores a negative predictive effect on PTGI scores. The partial mediational effect of psychological flexibility on the relationship between self-compassion and posttraumatic growth was found to be statistically significant.

CONCLUSION

In traumatic life events such as pandemics, the importance of self-compassion for posttraumatic growth and the mediator role of psychological flexibility in this relationship should be considered in order to manage the treatment process in cancer patients. These patients are more affected by the pandemic due to the nature of their malignancy and the strict protective measures they must follow as members of a high-risk group. The significance of therapies focused on psychological flexibility should be emphasized in comprehensive biopsychosocial approaches for the management of cancer patients.

Rumination Mediates the Relationship Between Childhood Traumas with Cognitive Defusion, Acceptance, and Emotion Regulation: A Qualitative and Quantitative Study

This study examines the intermediary role of rumination in the relationship between childhood traumas in young adults and cognitive defusion, psychological acceptance, and suppression which is one of the emotion regulation strategies. In the quantitative stage of the study formed according to the explanatory sequential design, the intermediary role of rumination by using a structural equation model while in the qualitative stage, the intermediary role of rumination was analyzed through interviews using the interpretive phenomenology design. Personal Information Form, Childhood Trauma Scale, Short Form Ruminative Response Scale, Acceptance and Action Form II, Drexel Defusion Scale, and Emotion Regulation Scale were used in the research. At the end of the research, it was determined that childhood traumas have a negative effect on cognitive defusion and acceptance, while they have a positive effect on suppression. It was seen that rumination has a partial intermediary role in the relationship of childhood traumas with cognitive defusion, acceptance, and suppression. As a result of the qualitative analysis, twelve themes such as "Constantly thinking about the past, not being able to move away from childhood traumas, not being able to forgive their parents, inability to get rid of negative thoughts, living in the past, moving away from a value-driven life, false expression of emotion, suppression of emotions, emotions reflected in behavior, coping with negative emotions and desired emotion regulation" emerged concerning participants' experiences of cognitive defusion, acceptance, and suppression. Although one of the purposes of using AAQ-II in the study was to support discussions about the scale via qualitative results, this was a limitation for the study. Therefore, although a high rate was obtained, it is not possible to infer that childhood traumas and rumination can explain acceptance behaviors. For this, much more quantitative and qualitative studies are needed. Other qualitative research findings are thought to support quantitative research findings.

Characteristics and predictors of family accommodation in Turkish individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder

BACKGROUND

Family accommodation (FA) is associated with disease severity and response to treatment rates in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and is therefore particularly important in this patient group. This study investigated the structure of FA and associated factors in a Turkish society sample.

METHODS

The study was carried out with 92 patients diagnosed with OCD for at least 1 year, who applied to Alanya ALKU Training and Research Hospital psychiatry outpatient clinic between February 2021 and March 2022. Sociodemographic data form, Family Accommodation Scale-Patient Form (FAS-PF), Dimensional Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (DOCS), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and Acceptance and Action Questionnaire (AAQ-II) were applied to all of the cases. Relatives filled out the Sociodemographic Data.

RESULTS

The mean age of the patients was 32.11 ± 11.56 years. Sixty-nine (75%) of the patients were women. Fifty (54.3%) patients weremarried. All participants reported FA behavior at least once in the previous week. FA exhibited no significant variation by sex (p = 0.679)or marital status (p = 0.256). Significant positive correlation was determined between DOCS-T (r = 0.370, p < 0.001), AAQ-II (r = 0.261, p = 0.013), BDI (r = 0.235, p = 0.024) and BAI (r = 0.342, p = 0.001) scores and the FAS-PF. In the regression analysis, only OCD disease severity predicted FA [(β = 0.295, p = 0.036, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) = 0.02 to 0.55)]. Higher FA scores were obtained in this study (23.93 ± 15.28) compared to previous research in Western societies (14.3 ± 15.2).

DISCUSSION

Clinicians should consider FA in the examination of OCD patients. High FA values for both frequency and severity suggestthat interventions directed toward FA may be associated with more positive outcomes in outpatient Turkish patients with OCD.

The effect of psychological inflexibility on health-related quality of life, depression, and anxiety in patients with chronic tinnitus without hearing loss

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between psychological inflexibility, depression, anxiety, and quality of life in patients with chronic tinnitus without hearing loss.

METHODS

The study was carried out involving 85 patients with chronic tinnitus without hearing loss and a control group of 80 individuals. All participants completed the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-Trait, the Beck Depression Inventory, and Short Form-36.

RESULTS

The patient group exhibited higher Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II (t=5.418, p<0.001), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-Trait (t=6.592, p<0.001), and Beck Depression Inventory (t=4.193, p<0.001) scores and lower physical component summary (t=4.648, p<0.001) and mental component summary (t=-5.492, p<0.001) scores than the control group. Psychological inflexibility predicted depression, anxiety, and impairment of quality of life. The effect of psychological inflexibility on physical component summary was mediated by depression (β=-0.15, [95%CI -0.299 to -0.017]), while its effect on mental component summary was mediated by anxiety and serial anxiety and depression (β=-0.17 [95%CI -0.344 to -0.055] and β=-0.06 [95%CI -0.116 to -0.100], respectively).

CONCLUSION

Psychological inflexibility plays an important role in patients with chronic tinnitus without hearing loss. It is associated with increased levels of anxiety and depression and decreased quality of life.

Anxiety and Psychological Flexibility in Women After Childbirth in the Rooming-in Unit during the COVID-19 Pandemic

INTRODUCTION

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has intensified perinatal anxiety disorders. Psychological flexibility (PF), considered a specific mental toughness, has not been examined with regard to its relationship with anxiety in women after childbirth. We aimed to compare levels of anxiety, PF, and pain in women depending on the mode of birth, parity, and the magnitude of risk of developing an anxiety disorder. We also investigated the association of anxiety with PF and pain.

METHODS

A total of 187 women after childbirth completed validated questionnaires for anxiety (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-Anxiety, Numerical Rating Scale for anxiety [NRS-A]), PF, and pain (Numerical Rating Scale for pain). Specific postpartum anxieties were assessed with a numerical scale from 0 to 10. The relationship of anxiety with PF and pain was examined. Women at low and high risk of developing anxiety disorder were compared in terms of PF, anxiety, and pain.

RESULTS

On the second postpartum day, women after cesarean birth demonstrated significantly greater anxiety on NRS-A and pain than those after vaginal birth. Primiparous women experienced significantly greater anxieties and pain compared to multiparous women. The higher the PF patients demonstrated, the less anxiety and pain they had. Patients at high risk of developing an anxiety disorder had a lower level of PF (P < .001) and higher levels of anxiety (P < .001) and pain (P < .01) than patients at low risk of developing an anxiety disorder. No difference in the anxiety of getting COVID-19 was observed between the groups (P > .05).

CONCLUSIONS

PF is an important psychological construct related to the mental and physical condition of women after childbirth. Increasing PF in women after childbirth may be considered as an important goal of preventive and intervention measures.

The Impact of Baseline Mindfulness Scores on Mindfulness-Based Intervention Outcomes: Toward Personalized Mental Health Interventions

A growing body of evidence has portrayed mindfulness as a useful tool for dealing with a broad range of psychological problems and disorders. This has created the impression that mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) can be used to treat nearly all psychological difficulties, in all cases. Nonetheless, little research has been done on how individual differences may contribute to intervention outcomes. The goal of this study was to evaluate the role of baseline mindfulness on participants’ outcomes by examining three prior Randomized Controlled Trials that addressed the impact of MBIs on mental health and mindfulness measures. The participants were 164 people, aged between 12 and 45, from both clinical and non-clinical samples. Our findings indicate that at least two thirds of the change produced by these interventions in terms of mindfulness scores can be predicted by the baseline scores of the same variables. We also found that many trajectories are not only strongly influenced by the initial status of the participants, but also by the intervention performed, as attested to by the significant interactions found. These results stress the need to continue doing research in a way that considers the diversity of participants’ trajectories, increasing the room for intervention improvements aligned with a more personalized health care model.

Childhood maltreatment and emotional distress: The role of beliefs about emotion and psychological inflexibility

The current study aimed to investigate the mediating role of negative beliefs about emotion and psychological inflexibility on the relationship between childhood maltreatment and emotional distress. A total of 519 participants completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21), the Leahy Emotional Schema Scale II (LESS-II), and the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II (AAQ-II). All scales were significantly correlated. Two mediation analyses were tested. In the first model negative beliefs about emotion and psychological inflexibility mediated the relationship between childhood maltreatment and emotional distress measured by DASS-21 total score. In the second model, negative beliefs about emotion and psychological inflexibility mediated the relationship between childhood maltreatment and depression, anxiety, and stress measured by the subscales of DASS-21. Results suggest that maltreatment in childhood is associated with the individuals' approaches, plans and strategies in response to emotions, and psychological inflexibility which together further determine emotional distress.

The effect of maladaptive schemas and psychological flexibility approaches on the addiction severity of drug addicts

PURPOSE

This study tested a model of the effect of maladaptive schemas on addiction severity and the mediating role of psychological flexibility between the two.

METHODS

The descriptive and methodological study was conducted with 661 opioid users. Data were collected using the questionnaire, including sociodemographic Characteristics, Addiction Profile Index, Young Schema Questionnaire 3 Short Form, Freiburg Mindfulness Inventory, Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II and Cognitive Fusion Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive and correlational analysis and structural equation model.

RESULTS

The mean age was 27.43 ± 7.04 years. Of participants, 52.3% had a secondary school degree, 76.7% had no children, 90.8% were men, 69.3% single, 71.9% unemployed, and 71.4% lived with their parents. Relationship between schemas and addiction severity was 0.36 (p < 0.05), which was reduced to 0.10 by psychological flexibility (p < 0.05). Psychological flexibility affects addiction severity directly, but maladaptive schemas affect addiction severity through psychological flexibility.

CONCLUSIONS

Maladaptive schemas and psychological flexibility are constructs that need to be addressed in substance use treatment.

Posttraumatic growth and positive determinants in nursing students after COVID-19 alarm status: A descriptive cross-sectional study

PURPOSE

To determine the relationship between posttraumatic growth (PTG), psychological flexibility, and psychological resilience of nursing students after the COVID-19 alarm status.

DESIGN AND METHODS

This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with nursing students (N = 292) studying at a nursing school of a university. The data collection instruments included a form on descriptive variables, and the PTG, psychological flexibility, and psychological resilience scales. Descriptive statistics, independent-samples t test, ANOVA, correlation, simple, and hierarchical linear regression analyses were used to analyze the data.

FINDINGS

The mean scores regarding psychological flexibility, psychological resilience, and PTG were 27.56 ± 11.06, 18.10 ± 5.75, and 63.49 ± 20.64, respectively. While psychological flexibility explained 36.7% of the total variance in psychological resilience, the predictive effect of seven descriptive variables, including psychological flexibility and psychological resilience, on PTG was determined as 13.4%.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

PTG, psychological flexibility, and psychological resilience may help nursing students prepare for their transition to the profession.

A randomized controlled trial of a mindfulness-based intervention in social workers working during the COVID-19 crisis

As one of the frontline professionals during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, social workers can face tremendous pressure, which can lead to mental health problems. The objective of this study was to investigate whether a brief mindfulness-based intervention had short- and middle-term effects on social workers working during the COVID-19 pandemic. In a randomized controlled trial, 49 social workers were assigned to an experimental group (n = 28) or a waitlist control group (n = 21). The intervention was a four-week mindfulness-based program. The outcome variables were measured at pre- and post-test, and at one-month follow-up test. At post-test and follow-up, the workers in the experimental group reported higher mean scores in psychological flexibility and self-compassion and lower mean scores in depression compared to the workers in the waitlist control group. Although the experimental group also showed lower mean scores than the waitlist control group in anxiety and stress at both post-test and follow, the differences were not statistically significant. The findings suggest that a brief mindfulness-based intervention can improve psychological flexibility, self-compassion, and depression in social workers working during the COVID-19 crisis, leading to protected mental health, adding support to continuing development of such efficient mindfulness-based programs. Future studies should use larger samples and examine brief interventions’ working mechanisms.

Effectiveness of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Patients with Psychosis Being Monitored at a Community Mental Health Center: A Six-Month Follow-up Study

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to examine the long-term efficacy of a short-term acceptance and commitment therapy-based (ACT) group psychotherapy on patients with psychosis in a community mental health center (CMHC).

METHODS

A total of 6 group-based ACT sessions were applied to 16 people diagnosed with psychotic disorders who met the inclusion criteria. They were evaluated at the start of, end of, and 6 months after the therapy using the acceptance and action questionnaire, the psychotic symptom rating scales, and the quality-of-life scale.

RESULTS

At the end of the 6 session group therapy and 6-month follow-up, a statistically significant decrease was found in patients' psychotic symptoms and experiential avoidance as well as a statistically significant increase in their quality of life (P < .001).

CONCLUSION

According to the results, ACT can be said to be an effective method for managing psychotic symptoms, reducing experiential avoidance, and improving the quality of life in patients diagnosed with psychotic disorders in CMHCs.

Experiential avoidance mediates the association between paranoid ideation and depressive symptoms in a sample from the general population

Psychotic experiences are prevalent in the general population and are associated with negative outcomes, including depressive symptoms. The mechanisms underlying this relationship remain unclear, but new insights could be obtained by exploring the role of transdiagnostic processes such as experiential avoidance, defined as a person's attempts or desires to suppress unwanted internal experiences like thoughts, emotions, memories, or bodily sensations. Studies analyzing the link between negative emotional states and psychotic experiences are scant. We explored the association between a specific kind of psychotic experience (paranoid ideation), experiential avoidance, and depressive, anxiety, and stress symptoms in a sample from the general population. We found that experiential avoidance partially mediates the associations between paranoid ideation and stress and anxiety symptoms and that it fully mediates the association between paranoid ideation and depressive symptoms. Our results suggest that the presence of paranoid ideation and the usage of experiential avoidance to cope with it are vulnerability factors associated with psychological distress.

The Relationship Among Anxiety, Depression, and Problematic Smartphone Use in University Students: The Mediating Effect of Psychological Inflexibility

OBJECTIVE

The number of studies that reveal the relationship between problematic smartphone use (PSU) and various health problems is increasing. In this study, we aimed to examine the relationship among PSU, depression, and anxiety and the mediating effect of psychological inflexibility (PI) in this relationship in university students.

METHODS

This study was conducted with 412 university students aged between 18-35 years studying at a state university. All participants completed the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II, Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory, and Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version. PROCESS macro in SPSS was used for mediation analysis.

RESULTS

Our analyses showed that both depression and anxiety were independent predictors of PSU even after controlling for each other. Our findings show that PI is the mediator variable in the effect of depression and anxiety on PSU.

CONCLUSION

Mental health professionals working with problematic smartphone use among university students should consider psychological inflexibility as well as depression and anxiety.

Rumination in major depressive and bipolar disorder - a meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

rumination, defined as repetitive thoughts about emotionally relevant experiences, has been linked extensively with mood disorders, especially major depressive disorder (MDD).¹ However, there is a growing body of evidence suggesting the importance of rumination in bipolar disorder (BD)² as well.

METHODS

we searched for studies that investigated rumination in both BD and MDD in four databases. Our systematic search identified 12 studies with an overall sample size of 2071 clinical patients.

RESULTS

results demonstrated no significant difference in the ruminative tendencies of the two patient groups when all rumination measures were included. We tested for the effect of rumination subtype, BD subgroups, and the current mood state of BD and MDD patients. There were no significant differences in terms of depressive rumination, however, BD patients reported more rumination on positive affect. This difference remained significant when examining in BD-I³ and BD-II⁴ patient groups, with similar effect sizes.

due to the lack of sufficient data in the literature, only a few self-report studies qualified to be included in our analysis. Thus additional moderating factors, such as the current mood state of the two patient groups could not be analyzed.

CONCLUSIONS

this review demonstrates that rumination is a significant process in both MDD and BD, highlighting the importance of interventions to reduce rumination in mood disorders. The two patient groups share several commonalities in terms of rumination, however, rumination subtype was found to be an important moderating variable underlining a difference in rumination on positive affect.

Psychological inflexibility mediates the relationship between fear of negative evaluation and psychological vulnerability

College students worldwide and in Turkey face many biopsychosocial spiritual and economic issues, in part due to developmental and contextual factors. Understanding these issues and their relationship with psychological inflexibility, which is the central concept to the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), is an unexplored gap in the literature. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to examine the mediating and moderating roles of Psychological Inflexibility (PI) in the relationship between Fear of Negative Evaluation (FNE) and Psychological Vulnerability (PV), and to set an empirical ground for developing evidence-based research and practices based on ACT. The study group consisted of 389 undergraduate students studying in various departments of a mid-sized urban state university. Regression-based mediation and moderation testing procedures revealed that PI partially mediates the relationship between FNE and PV. Moderating role of PI on the same relationship was not verified. The present findings are deemed to be useful for understanding the relationships of these constructs and developing future mental health research and interventions to address biopsychosocial spiritual issues and enhance wellbeing especially from an ACT perspective.

Coronavirus Stress, Optimism-Pessimism, Psychological Inflexibility, and Psychological Health: Psychometric Properties of the Coronavirus Stress Measure

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is currently a global health threat attributed to negatively affecting the mental health and well-being of people globally. The purpose of the present study is to examine the mediating role of optimism-pessimism and psychological inflexibility in the relationship of coronavirus stress with psychological problems among Turkish adults. The sample of the study included 451 adults (55% women). Participants mainly consisted of young adults with a mean age of 23.30 years, ranging from 18 to 65 years (SD = 6.97). A mediation model indicated that coronavirus stress had a significant predictive effect on optimism-pessimism, psychological inflexibility, and psychological problems. Further, optimism-pessimism and psychological inflexibility mediated the effect of coronavirus stress on psychological problems in adults. Lastly, optimism-pessimism predicted the psychological problems of adults through psychological inflexibility. These results elucidate our understanding of the role of mediators in coronavirus stress and psychological health problems. The findings are useful in terms of providing evidence for tailoring interventions and implementing preventative approaches to mitigate the psychopathological consequences of COVID-19. Based on the present findings, the potential utility of acceptance and commitment therapy is discussed within the context of COVID-19.

Reliability and Validity of a Turkish Version of the Acceptance and Action Diabetes Questionnaire

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study is to perform validity and reliability examination of the Turkish form of Acceptance and Action Diabetes Questionnaire, and to investigate whether this scale is a measurement tool for evaluation of psychological flexibility levels in a sample of patients with diabetes in Turkey.

METHODS

This study was conducted with 105 patients. Turkish forms of the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Problem Areas in Diabetes Questionnaire (PAID), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-I and STAI-II), Audit of Diabetes-Dependent Quality of Life (ADDQoL) and Turkish form of Acceptance and Action Diabetes Questionnaire (TAADQ) were applied. SPSS 20.0 and AMOS was used in statistical analysis.

RESULTS

56.12% of the patients were female and the mean of age was 54 (SD=±9.9) years. The mean duration of education was found 7.65 (SD=3.97) years. 74.8% of the patients most of whom (83.3%, n=85) had diabetes mellitus and the mean glycemic control calculated with HbA1c was 8.02±1.91. According to the final fit indices, we found that the revised and corrected 9-item model was superior over the previous model. Cronbach Alpha coefficient of TAADQ was found as 0.836.

CONCLUSION

TAADQ is a valid and reliable assessment tool in Turkish population. So TAADQ will be a powerfull tool in assessing psychological flexibility in diabetes patients.

Psychometric properties of the acceptance and action questionnaire (AAQ II) Malay version in cancer patients

OBJECTIVES

Acceptance and action questionnaire (AAQ II) is a scale used to assess psychological inflexibility. The aim of this study is to translate AAQ II into Malay language and evaluate the psychometric properties of AAQ II Malay version.

METHODS

The AAQ II which has been translated into Malay language via back translation procedure was distributed to 101 cancer patients and 100 non-cancer patients. The evaluation of psychometric properties in this study included content validity index, internal consistency, parallel reliability, exploratory factor analysis, concurrent validity, sensitivity and specificity of AAQ II Malay version.

RESULTS

AAQ II Malay version has established good content validity index, acceptable internal consistency with Cronbach's alpha value of 0.91, excellent parallel reliability and adequate concurrent validity. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) results demonstrated AAQ II Malay version is a unidimensional factor instrument. The result of sensitivity and specificity of AAQ II Malay version indicated cancer patients who scored more than 17.5 were having significant psychological inflexibility.

CONCLUSION

AAQ II Malay version is a reliable and valid instrument to measure psychological inflexibility among cancer patient in Malaysia.
