Abstract
PURPOSE Exploring the risk factors for mortality of hemodialysis patients undergoing COVID-19 and the changes in mortality before and after the opening of the epidemic in northern Hunan province, China. METHODS We analyzed 230 hemodialysis patients with COVID-19 in the Yiyang Central Hospital from November 01, 2022 to February 28, 2023. Demographic data, laboratory data and public diseases were collected. Cox regression analysis was used to identify risk factors and independent predictors of mortality. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to determine the diagnostic value of risk factors in hemodialysis COVID-19 patients. RESULTS The average duration of the disease was 12.53 days. The mortality rate in our cohort was 28.70%. Independent predictors of mortality in our cohort were: age (hazard ratio [HR] 1.09; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.05-1.14; P < 0.001), elevated procalcitonin (PCT) levels (HR 1.02; 95%CI, 1.01-1.03; P < 0.001), and higher white blood cell-neutrophil ratio (NWR) (HR 1.04; 95%CI, 1.04-1.07; P = 0.004). Areas under the ROC curve (AUC) for age, NWR, PCT, age*NWR were 0.70 (95%CI: 0.62-0.77), 0.82 (95%CI: 0.75-0.90), 0.64 (95%CI: 0.55-0.73), and 0.89 (0.85,0.94). CONCLUSION We discovered that old age, high levels of NWR and PCT might be predictors of mortality, reported the causes and prognostic predictors of mortality in hemodialysis populations with COVID-19 from northern Hunan, China.

Abstract
Fibrosis is the abnormal accumulation of extracellular matrix proteins such as collagen and fibronectin. Aging, injury, infections, and inflammation can cause different types of tissue fibrosis. Numerous clinical investigations have shown a correlation between the degree of liver and pulmonary fibrosis in patients and telomere length and mitochondrial DNA content, both of which are signs of aging. Aging involves the gradual loss of tissue function over time, which results in the loss of homeostasis and, ultimately, an organism's fitness. A major feature of aging is the accumulation of senescent cells. Senescent cells abnormally and continuously accumulate in the late stages of life, contributing to age-related fibrosis and tissue deterioration, among other aging characteristics. Furthermore, aging generates chronic inflammation, which results in fibrosis and decreases organ function. This finding suggests that fibrosis and aging are closely related. The transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) superfamily plays a crucial role in the physiological and pathological processes of aging, immune regulation, atherosclerosis, and tissue fibrosis. In this review, the functions of TGF-β in normal organs, aging, and fibrotic tissues is discussed: TGF-β signalling is altered with age and is an indicator of pathology associated with tissue fibrosis. In addition, this review discusses the potential targeting of noncoding.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Immune dysregulation in patients with acute COVID-19 under chronic hemodialysis (CHD) is fully not elucidated. The changes of mononuclear counts and mediators before and after HD and associations with final outcome were studied. METHOD In this prospective study, hospitalized patients with moderate-to-severe COVID-19 under CHD and matched comparators under HD were analyzed for their absolute counts of lymphoid cells and circulating inflammatory mediators. Blood samples were collected before start and at the end of the first HD session; dialysate samples were also collected. RESULT Fifty-nine patients with acute COVID-19 under CHD and 20 uninfected comparators under CHD were enrolled. Circulating concentrations of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFα), interleukin (IL)-10, interferon-γ and platelet-derived growth factor-A were increased in patients. Concentrations of mediators did not differ before and after HD. Significant decreases of CD4-lymphocytes and CD19-lymphocytes were found in patients. The decrease of the expression of HLA-DR on CD14-monocytes was associated with unfavorable outcome (defined as WHO-CPS 6 or more by day 28); increased counts of CD19-lymphocytes were associated with better outcomes. CONCLUSION Patients under CHD develop an inflammatory reaction to SARS-CoV-2 characterized by increase of inflammatory mediators, decrease of circulating T-lymphocytes and decrease of the expression of HLA-DR on CD14-monocytes.
