Abstract
BACKGROUND The stratum corneum (SC) is the main barrier of the skin, and cosmeceuticals are different from ordinary cosmetics in that they need to deliver active ingredients targeting specific skin problems through the SC into the deeper layers of the skin. Thus, we designed a compound essential oil (CEO) extracted from Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge and Cinnamomum cassia Presl, supplemented with borneol to deliver active ingredients through the SC. METHODS The CEO was prepared by flash extraction combined with the microwave method. Moreover, the main components of the CEO were determined using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCMS). Visualization techniques, such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), haematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining, and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), were used to study the permeationpromoting mechanism of the CEO on the skin. Furthermore, the permeation-promoting effects of the CEO on both hydrophobic and hydrophilic ingredients were tested via in vitro skin penetration experiments and in vivo microdialysis experiments. RESULTS The results indicated the ability of the CEO to alter the structure of the SC, leading to enhanced transdermal permeation of hydrophobic and hydrophilic ingredients. The 1.5% CEO group demonstrated the best permeation-promoting effect compared to the other CEO groups and blank groups (P<0.05). Furthermore, the CEO displayed an expedited permeability-promoting effect on hydrophobic ingredients compared to hydrophilic ingredients. CONCLUSION It is concluded that the prepared CEO can promote the transdermal permeation of hydrophobic and hydrophilic ingredients. This study will provide a reference for the application of the prepared CEO in the development of cosmeceuticals with natural efficacy.

Abstract
Oplopanax elatus is an endangered medicinal plant, and adventitious root (AR) culture is an effective way to obtain its raw materials. Yeast extract (YE) is a lower-price elicitor and can efficiently promote metabolite synthesis. In this study, the bioreactor-cultured O. elatus ARs were treated with YE in a suspension culture system to investigate the elicitation effect of YE on flavonoid accumulation, serving for further industrial production. Among YE concentrations (25-250 mg/L), 100 mg/L YE was the most suitable for increasing the flavonoid accumulation. The ARs with various ages (35-, 40-, and 45-day-old) responded differently to YE stimulation, where the highest flavonoid accumulation was found when 35-day-old ARs were treated with 100 mg/L YE. After YE treatment, the flavonoid content increased, peaked at 4 days, and then decreased. By comparison, the flavonoid content and antioxidant activities in the YE group were obviously higher than those in the control. Subsequently, the flavonoids of ARs were extracted by flash extraction, where the optimized extraction process was: 63% ethanol, 69 s of extraction time, and a 57 mL/g liquid-material ratio. The findings provide a reference for the further industrial production of flavonoid-enriched O. elatus ARs, and the cultured ARs have potential application for the future production of products.

Abstract
New antibacterial agents are needed to overcome the challenges of microbial food contamination. In this study, we investigated the potential of Elaeagnus mollis polysaccharide (EMP) to modify black phosphorus (BP) for use as a bactericide for foodborne pathogenic bacteria. The resulting compound (EMP-BP) displayed enhanced stability and activity compared with BP. EMP-BP exhibited an increased antibacterial activity (bactericidal efficiency of 99.999 % after 60 min of light exposure) compared to EMP and BP. Further studies revealed that photocatalytically generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) and active polysaccharides acted collectively on the cell membrane, leading to cell deformation and death. Furthermore, EMP-BP inhibited biofilm formation and reduced expression of virulence factors of Staphylococcus aureus, and material hemolysis and cytotoxicity tests prove that the material had good biocompatibility. In addition, bacteria treated with EMP-BP remained highly sensitive to antibiotics and did not develop significant resistance. In summary, we report an environmentally friendly method for controlling pathogenic foodborne bacteria that is efficient and apparently safe.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the physicochemical properties of the rice porous starch (HSS-ES) prepared by high-speed shear combined with double-enzymatic (α-amylase and glucoamylase) hydrolysis, and to reveal their mechanism. The analyses of 1H NMR and amylose content showed that high-speed shear changed the molecular structure of starch and increased the amylose content (up to 20.42 ± 0.04 %). FTIR, XRD and SAXS spectra indicated that high-speed shear did not change the starch crystal configuration but caused a decrease in short-range molecular order and relative crystallinity (24.42 ± 0.06 %), and a loose semi-crystalline lamellar, which were beneficial to the followed double-enzymatic hydrolysis. Therefore, the HSS-ES displayed a superior porous structure and larger specific surface area (2.962 ± 0.002 m2/g) compared with double-enzymatic hydrolyzed porous starch (ES), resulting in the increase of water and oil absorption from 130.79 ± 0.50 % and 109.63 ± 0.71 % to 154.79 ± 1.14 % and 138.40 ± 1.18 %, respectively. In vitro digestion analysis showed that the HSS-ES had good digestive resistance derived from the higher content of slowly digestible and resistant starch. The present study suggested that high-speed shear as an enzymatic hydrolysis pretreatment significantly enhanced the pore formation of rice starch.

Optimization of Flash Extraction of Akebia trifoliata Seed Oil by the Box-Behnken Response Surface Methodology and Comparison of Oil Yields from Different Origins. J CHEM-NY 2022. Abstract
The aim was to optimize the extraction process of Akebia trifoliata seed oil. Using Akebia trifoliata seed as raw material, the oil extraction rate was used as index. The effect of flash extraction on the yield of Akebia trifoliata seed oil was investigated. Taking the liquid-material ratio, extraction voltage, and extraction time as the investigation factors and the oil extraction rate of Akebia trifoliata seed as the response value and on the basis of the single-factor test, the extraction process of Akebia trifoliata seed oil was optimized by the Box-Behnken response surface method. The oil yields of Akebia trifoliata seeds from different origins in China were compared. The experimental results showed that the optimum technological conditions for flash extraction of Akebia trifoliata seed oil were as follows: liquid-material ratio, 12 : 1; extraction voltage, 150 V; extraction time, 90 s; and oil yield of Akebia trifoliata seed, 19.83%. For comparison, it is found that the oil yield of Akebia trifoliata seed produced in Qujing of Yunnan is relatively the highest, followed by Tongren of Guizhou and Zhangjiajie of Hunan; the oil yield of Akebia trifoliata seed produced in Shimian of Sichuan is the lowest. The flash extraction process of Akebia trifoliata seed oil is reasonable, and the oil yield of Akebia trifoliata seed produced in Qujing of Yunnan, China, is relatively the highest. It provides a theoretical and experimental reference for the research and development of Akebia trifoliata seed oil.

Abstract
Berry fruits have attracted increasing more attention of the food processing industry as well as consumers due to their widely acclaimed advantages as highly effective anti-oxidant properties which may provide protection against some cancers as well as aging. However, the conventional extraction methods are inefficient and wasteful of solvent utilization. This paper presents a critical overview of some novel extraction methods applicable to berries, including pressurized-liquid extraction, ultrasound-assisted extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, supercritical fluid extraction, enzyme-assisted extraction as well as some combined extraction methods. When combined with conventional methods, the new technologies can be more efficient and environmentally friendly. Additionally, high quality processing of the functional extracts from berry fruits, such as refined processing technology, is introduced in this review. Finally, progress of applications of berry functional extracts in the food industry is described in detail; this should encourage further scientific research and industrial utilization.

Abstract
Elaeagnus mollis oil extracted from the nuts of Elaeagnus mollis Diels can be used in food and pharmaceutical applications due to its excellent nutritional value. An ultrasound-assisted solvent enzymatic extraction (UASEE) method was used to extract oil from Elaeagnus mollis Diels with n-hexane solvent (1:11.6 g/mL) and 1.1% (w/w) mixed enzymes (neutral protease:hemicellulase:pectinase = 1:1:1, w/w/w). The physicochemical properties, fatty acid profile, bioactive compounds, antioxidant activity, morphology, and thermal stability of UASEE oil were investigated and compared with soxhlet extraction (SE) oil and cold pressing (CP) oil. The UASEE oil exhibited a higher content of unsaturated fatty acids (93.96 ± 0.28%), total tocopherols and tocotrienols (147.32 ± 2.19 mg/100 g), total phytosterols (261.78 ± 5.74 mg/100 g), squalene (96.75 ± 0.31 mg/100 g), total phenolic content (84.76 ± 2.37 mg GAE/kg), and antioxidant activity (12.52 ± 0.28 mg/mL) than SE and CP oil. The lower peroxide value and acid value in UASEE oil indicated its better quality and lower likelihood of rancidity. The oil obtained using UASEE had higher thermal stability as well, as indicated by thermogravimetric analysis. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the UASEE process causes damage to cell walls, and the leakage of substances in the cells facilitates extraction in the following step. Thus, UASEE is a promising processing method for the extraction of Elaeagnus mollis oil.

Abstract
To improve the extraction efficiency and quality, ultrasound-assisted solvent enzymatic extraction (UASEE) method was applied to extract oil from Elaeagnus mollis Diels. The soxhlet extraction (SE) and cold pressing (CP) were carried out to be compared with UASEE. The optimal UASEE conditions were liquid–solid ratio of 11.6 mL/g, enzyme amount of 1.1%, and ultrasound power of 583 W, which gave by Plackett–Burman and Box–Behnken design. Under optimum conditions, the oil yield of 43.35 ± 0.26% was reached, which was similar to that of SE (43.02 ± 0.77%). The oil obtained by UASEE is more desirable than that of SE, but similar with CP, especially on unsaturated fatty acids content and total tocopherol content. Overall, UASEE is a potential alternative to traditional methods for the efficient extraction of E. mollis oil for its higher oil yield and better quality.

Abstract
In this paper, we used the flash extraction method (FEM) to extract ginsenosides from mountain cultivated ginseng (MCG), optimized the FEM process by response surface methodology (RSM), and separated 23 kinds of ginsenosides from MCG, including rare ginsenoside Rg3, 20(R/S)-Rg2, Rk3, 20(S)-Rh2, 20(R)-Rh1, F1 and Rg6. Among them, notoginsenoside R1 was isolated from MCG for the first time. Additionally, we established an HPLC-FT-ICR-MS method to accurately identify 20 ginsenosides in MCG, and quantitatively analyzed the differences in the content of rare ginsenosides in MCG and Garden-Cultivated Ginseng (CG) by HPLC-UV. The results showed that the chemical components of MCG and CG were similar, but the ginsenoside content of MCG was double that of CG. Notably, the content of ginsenoside 20 (S)-Rh2 and 20 (R)-Rh1 had the largest difference, and the content in MCG was 33 and 24 times higher than that in CG, respectively. Through quantitative analysis, we clarified the reason why the activity of MCG is stronger than that of CG, which provided a theoretical basis for clinical application and further research of MCG. 23 ginsenosides, including rare ginsenosides, were separated from MCG by flash extraction technique. Through quantitative analysis, we found that the content of rare ginsenosides in MCG was higher than that in CG.![]()

Abstract
Supercritical fluid carbon dioxide (SF-CO₂) was used to extract oil from Elaeagnus mollis Diels (E. mollis Diels) seed and its antioxidant ability was also investigated. The effect of extraction pressure (20⁻35 MPa), extraction temperature (35⁻65 C), extraction time (90⁻180 min) and seed particle size (40⁻100 mesh) on the oil yield were studied. An orthogonal experiment was conducted to determine the best operating conditions for the maximum extraction oil yield. Based on the optimum conditions, the maximum yield reached 29.35% at 30 MPa, 50 C, 150 min, 80 mesh seed particle size and 40 g/min SF-CO2 flow rate. The E. mollis Diels seed (EDS) oil obtained under optimal SF-CO2 extraction conditions had higher unsaturated fatty acid content (91.89%), higher vitamin E content (96.24 ± 3.01 mg/100 g) and higher total phytosterols content (364.34 ± 4.86 mg/100 g) than that extracted by Soxhlet extraction (SE) and cold pressing (CP) methods. The antioxidant activity of the EDS oil was measured by DPPH and hydroxyl radical scavenging test. EDS oil extracted by different methods exhibited a dose-dependent antioxidant ability, with IC50 values of no significant differences. Based on the results of correlation between bioactive compounds, lupeol and -tocopherol was the most important antioxidant in EDS oil.
