Trends and prospects in graphene and its derivatives toxicity research: A bibliometric analysis

The purpose of this paper is to explore the current research status, hot topics, and future prospects in the field of graphene and its derivatives toxicity. In the article, the Web of Science Core Collection database was used as the data source, and the CiteSpace and VOSviewer were used to conduct a visual analysis of the last 10 years of research on graphene and its derivatives toxicity. A total of 8573 articles were included, and we analyzed the literature characteristics of the research results in the field of graphene and its derivatives toxicity, as well as the distribution of authors and co-cited authors; the distribution of countries and institutions; the situation of co-cited references; and the distribution of journals and categories. The most prolific countries, institutions, journals, and authors are China, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, RSC Advances, and Wang, Dayong, respectively. The co-cited author with the most citations was Akhavan, Omid. The five research hotspot keywords in the field of graphene and its derivatives toxicity were "nanomaterials," "exposure," "biocompatibility," "adsorption," and "detection." Frontier topics were "facile synthesis," "antibacterial activity," and "carbon dots." Our study provides perspectives for the study of graphene and its derivatives toxicity and yields valuable information and suggestions for the development of graphene and its derivatives toxicity research in the future.

Graphene-semiconductor nanocomposites for cancer phototherapy

Being a carbon-based hybrid, graphene-semiconductor composites have attracted considerable attention in recent decades owing to their potential features such as high photosensitivity, extended light absorption, and effective separation of charge carriers, thus have been regarded as a promising platform for environmental and biomedical applications, respectively. In this mini-review, we first summarized the recent advancements in the development of graphene-based semiconductor nanocomposites via sol-gel, solution mixing, in situ growth, hydrothermal, and solvothermal approaches, and then comprehensively reviewed their potential light activated cancer phototherapeutic applications. Finally, we rationally analyze the current challenges and new perspectives for the future development of more effective phototherapeutic nanoagents. We hope to offer enriched information to harvest the utmost fascinating properties of graphene as a platform to construct efficient graphene/semiconductor hybrids for cancer phototherapy.

Combination therapy with TiO2 nanoparticles and cisplatin enhances chemotherapy response in murine melanoma models

BACKGROUND

Despite recent progressions in the treatment of melanoma, the response to conventional therapies and the long-term survival in melanoma patients still remain poor. Recently, the use of nanoparticles (NPs) has been highlighted for promoting the chemotherapeutic effects of cytotoxic drugs in melanoma. The aim of this study is to mechanistically evaluate the potential of titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanoparticles (NPs) for enhancing chemotherapy effects in in vitro and in vivo models of murine melanoma.

METHODS

The F10 melanoma cells were exposed to different concentrations of TiO₂ NPs and/or cisplatin, then cell growth, cell viability, and cell death were evaluated. In parallel, C57BL/6 syngeneic melanoma mice were treated by TiO₂ NPs and/or cisplatin, and then drug responses, tumor size and mice's organs were studied pathologically. Autophagy was examined by evaluating the formation of autophagosomes and gene expression levels of autophagy markers (ATG5 and ATG6) by fluorescent microscopy and qPCR, respectively.

RESULTS

Nontoxic concentrations of TiO₂ NPs (50 µg/ml) promote anti-proliferative and cytotoxic effects of cisplatin in F10 melanoma cells, which is mediated through the induction of autophagy and necrotic cell death. Whereas TiO₂ NPs have no cytotoxic or metastatic effects in melanoma mice, its combination with cisplatin enhances drug responses (up to 50%), leading to higher inhibition of tumor growth compared with each monotherapy.

CONCLUSION

The combination of TiO₂ NP with cisplatin enhances chemotherapy response in both in vitro and in vivo melanoma models. In addition, autophagy plays an essential role during sensitizing melanoma cells to chemotherapy.

Antibacterial properties of a bacterial cellulose CQD-TiO2 nanocomposite

Antibacterial dressing can prevent the occurrence of many infections of wounds. Bacterial cellulose (BC) has the ability to carry and transfer the medicine to achieve a wound healing bandage. In this study, Carbon Quantum Dots-Titanium dioxide (CQD-TiO₂) nanoparticles (NP) were added to BC as antibacterial agents. FTIR Spectroscopy illuminated that NPs were well-bonded to BC. Interestingly, MIC test proved that BC/CQD-TiO₂ nanostructure (NS) has anti-bacterial properties against Staphylococcus aureus. The findings indicated that, CQD-TiO₂ NPs have stronger antibacterial properties with better tensile strength compared to CQD NPs, in a concentration-dependent manner. Toxicity of CQD-TiO₂ NPs on human L929 fibroblast cells was also evaluated. Most importantly, the results of the scratch test indicated that the NS was effective in wound healing in L929 cells. The approach in this study may provide an alternative to make an antibacterial wound dressing to achieve an effective drug-based bandage.
