Applications of Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer in Organic Synthesis

An Organocatalytic System for Z-Alkene Synthesis via a Hydrogen-Bonding-Assisted Photoinduced Electron Donor-Acceptor Complex

A general catalytic donor for the combination of a photoinduced electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complex and energy transfer was developed. This mild and metal-free protocol allows facile access to various Z-alkenes. Mechanism studies revealed that the organophotocatalyst, 4-CzIPN, formed a distinct three-component EDA complex with redox-active esters and (C6H5O)2P(O)OH to trigger the photoredox catalysis. The E → Z isomerization was achieved via electron exchange energy transfer from 4-CzIPN.

Template Assisted Formation of 32 and 34π Octaphyrins Embedded with Dithienopyrrole Cores: A New Scaffold to Unravel Proton Coupled Redox Switching and (Anti)Aromaticity

Herein, we report two distinct octaphyrins obtained by the condensation of new dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrrole based tetrapyrrane under two different acidic conditions. Fourfold meso-substituted octaphyrin was the major product when the reaction was performed in the presence of an aryl aldehyde using trifluoroacetic acid. Whereas, the sixfold meso-substituted octaphyrin was obtained when the precursor was condensed with pentafluorobenzaldehyde using para-toluenesulfonic acid. Such a template effect of aryl aldehydes in oxidative coupling reactions is realized for the first time in literature. Experimental and theoretical studies suggested that the oxidized form of fourfold meso-substituted octaphyrin is 32π antiaromatic and undergoes proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) to the protonated form of 34π aromatic congener upon treatment with protic acids. Furthermore, small organic molecules such as alcohols and amines were also found to promote chemical reduction. Single crystal X-ray structure revealed that the aromatic counterpart is highly planar and stabilized by several intermolecular H-bonding and F-F interactions, leading to a large 3D supramolecular arrangement and exhibited colorimetric sensing for fluoride and hydroxide anions. On the other hand, sixfold meso-substituted octaphyrin did not show (anti)aromatic features, PCET or anion sensing, but its intriguing absorption features associated with protonation could make it an ideal candidate for pH-dependent bioimaging.

Construction of α-Acyloxy Ketones via Photoredox-Catalyzed O-H Insertion of Sulfoxonium Ylides with Carboxylic Acids

Herein, a photoredox-catalyzed insertion of sulfoxonium ylides with carboxylic acids was advanced under mild and simple conditions, offering a practical approach for preparing α-acyloxy ketones with a broad scope of carboxylic acids. A combined experimental and computational study suggests that this reaction proceeds via a stepwise proton-assisted electron transfer mechanism.

Theoretical study on hydrogen transfer in the dissociation of dimethyl disulfide radical cations

Hydrogen transfer (HT) is of crucial importance in biochemistry and atmospheric chemistry. Here, HT processes involved in the dissociation reaction of dimethyl disulfide radical cations (DMDS˙⁺, CH₃SSCH₃˙⁺) are investigated using quantum chemical calculations. Four HTs from the C to S atom and one HT from the S to S atom are observed and the most probable paths are proposed in the dissociation channel from DMDS˙⁺ to CH_nS⁺ (n = 2-4). The mechanisms of all these five HTs are described as hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) and four of them are accompanied by electron transfer (ET). Considering the catalytic effect of water molecules existing in organisms and the atmosphere, five HT processes in the dissociation of the [DMDS + H₂O]˙⁺ complex are further explored, which show lower free energy barriers. With the participation of water molecules acting as a base, two HTs from the C to the S atom, which have the largest decrease in energy barriers, are characterized as concerted proton-coupled electron transfer (cPCET). These results can be extended to understand the mechanism of the HT process during the dissociation of disulfide and help provide a strategy to design a rare cPCET mechanism for the activation of the C-H bond.

Self Cycloaddition of o-Naphthoquinone Nitrosomethide to (±) Spiro{naphthalene(naphthopyranofurazan)}-one Oxide: An Insight into its Formation

2-Hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde oxime was oxidized by AgO (or Ag2O), in presence of N-methyl morpholine N-oxide (NMMO), to the title spiro adduct-dimer (±)-Spiro{naphthalene-1(2H),4'-(naphtho[2',1':2,3]pyrano[4,5-c]furazan)}-2-one-11'-oxide by a Diels-Alder(D-A) type self-cycloaddition, through the agency of an o-naphthoquinone nitrosomethide (o-NQM). Moreover, 2-hydroxy-8-methoxy-1-naphthaldehyde oxime was prepared and subjected to the same oxidation conditions. Its sterically guided result, 9-methoxynaphtho[1,2-d]isoxazole, was isolated, instead of the expected spiro adduct. The peri intramolecular H bonding in the oxime is considered to have a key contribution to the outcome. Geometry and energy features of the oxidant- and stereo-guided selectivity of both oxidation outcomes have been explored by DFT, perturbation theory and coupled cluster calculations. The reaction free energy of the D-A intermolecular cycloaddition is calculated at -82.0 kcal/mol, indicating its predominance over the intramolecular cyclization of ca. -37.6 kcal/mol. The cycloaddition is facilitated by NMMO through dipolar interactions and hydrogen bonding with both metal complexes and o-NQM. The 8(peri)-OMe substitution of the reactant oxime sterically impedes formation of the spiro adduct, instead it undergoes a more facile cyclodehydration to the isoxazole structure by ca. 4.9 kcal/mol.

Molecular Mechanism of the Mononuclear Copper Complex-Catalyzed Water Oxidation from Cluster-Continuum Model Calculations

Cluster-continuum model calculations were conducted to decipher the mechanism of water oxidation catalyzed by a mononuclear copper complex. Among various O-O bond formation mechanisms investigated in this study, the most favorable pathway involved the nucleophilic attack of OH^- onto the ^.+ L-Cu^II -OH^- intermediate. During such process, the initial binding of OH^- to the proximity of ^.+ L-Cu^II -OH^- would result in the spontaneous oxidation of OH^- , leading to OH⋅ radical and Cu^II -OH^- species. The further O-O coupling between OH⋅ radical and Cu^II -OH^- was associated with a barrier of 14.8 kcal mol^-1 , leading to the formation of H₂ O₂ intermediate. Notably, the formation of "Cu^III -O^.- " species, a widely proposed active species for O-O bond formation, was found to be thermodynamically unfavorable and could be bypassed during the catalytic reactions. On the basis the present calculations, a catalytic cycle of the mononuclear copper complex-catalyzed water oxidation was proposed.
