ABO and Rh blood groups in relation to ovarian, endometrial and cervical cancer risk among the population of South-East Siberia

Nomograms confirm serum IL-6 and CRP as predictors of immune checkpoint inhibitor efficacy in unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma

Background

Immunotherapy based on immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) has become the first-line treatment for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (uHCC). However, only a small portion of patients are responsive to ICIs. It is important to identify the patients who are likely to benefit from ICIs in clinical practice. We aimed to examine the significance of serum IL-6 and CRP levels in predicting the effectiveness of ICIs for uHCC.

Methods

We retrospectively recruited 222 uHCC patients who received ICIs treatment (training cohort: 124 patients, validation cohort: 98 patients). In the training cohort, patients are categorized into the response group (R) and no-response group (NR). The levels of serum IL-6 and CRP were compared between the two groups. Internal validation was performed in the validation cohort. Survival analysis was carried out using the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional hazard regression model. The nomograms were developed and assessed using the consistency index (C-index) and calibration curve.

Results

Serum levels of IL-6 and CRP were significantly lower in the R group than in the NR group (9.94 vs. 36.85 pg/ml, p< 0.001; 9.90 vs. 24.50 mg/L, p< 0.001, respectively). An ROC curve was employed to identify the optimal cut-off values for IL-6 and CRP in both groups, resulting in values of 19.82 pg/ml and 15.50 mg/L, respectively. Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that MVI (HR 1.751, 95%CI 1.059-2.894, p=0.029; HR 1.530, 95%CI 0.955-2.451, p=0.077), elevated IL-6 (HR 1.624, 95%CI 1.016-2.596, p=0.043; HR 2.146, 95%CI 1.361-3.383, p =0.001) and high CRP (HR 1.709, 95%CI 1.041-2.807, p=0.034; HR 1.846, 95%CI 1.128-3.022, p = 0.015) were independent risk factors for PFS and OS, even after various confounders adjustments. Nomograms are well-structured and validated prognostic maps constructed from three variables, as MVI, IL6 and CRP.

Conclusion

Low levels of IL-6 and CRP have a positive correlation with efficacy for uHCC patients receiving ICIs.

Association between ABO blood type and type I endometrial cancer: a retrospective study

This study aimed to assess the association between ABO blood type and incident of type I endometrial cancer (EC), as well as the stage and differentiation. 213 patients with type I EC and 300 healthy controls were included. As a result, the frequencies of A, B, O, and AB blood types among patients with type I EC were 51 (23.9%), 59 (27.7%), 93 (43.7%) and 10 (4.7%), respectively. There were no significant differences in age, body mass index, and other baseline covariates between groups of ABO blood types (p > .05). Logistic regression model showed that women with blood type O was more likely to develop type I EC than those with type A (odds ratio (OR): 1.66, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.05-2.63). However, there was no significant association of ABO blood type with stage and differentiation of type I EC (p > .05). In conclusion, blood type O was the most prevalent ABO blood type among patients with type I EC and was associated with increased risk of type I EC, while ABO blood type was not significantly associated with stage or differentiation of type I EC.IMPACT STATEMENTWhat is already known on this subject? Previous studies have produced inconsistent findings on association of ABO blood type with EC. Those studies also did not explore the relationship between ABO blood type and stage or differentiation of type I EC.What the results of this study add? The present study showed that women with blood type O was more likely to develop type I EC than those with type A and there was no significant association of ABO blood type with stage or differentiation of type I EC.What the implications are of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? Gynaecologists should pay more attention to women with blood type O, who should undergo more active EC screening.

Effect of ABO blood group on postoperative overall survival and recurrence-free survival rate in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma after hepatectomy: a multi-center retrospective cohort study

BACKGROUND

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common malignancies worldwide. The survival rate after hepatectomy as the first line of treatment for HCC depends on various factors. This study evaluated the association of the ABO blood group and Rh with overall survival (OS) and Recurrence-free survival (RFS) rate after hepatectomy.

METHODS

This multicenter retrospective cohort study reviewed the medical files of 639 HCC patients who underwent hepatectomy from 2010 to 2022 in three medical centers affiliated with the Iran University of Medical Sciences. Patient data, including demographic, clinical, tumor characteristics, and post-surgery outcomes, were collected by referring to the patient's medical profiles. The Cox proportional hazard investigated the relationship between ABO blood group type and OS and RFS rate after hepatectomy.

RESULTS

The five-year OS and RFS rates were 25.4% and 18.7%, respectively. The five-year OS (Lok rank:40.89, P:0.001) and RFS rate in patients with blood type A were significantly lower than in non-A patients. (Lok rank:10.8, P:0.001) The multivariate Cox analysis showed that blood type A, age < 45 years, tumor size > 5 cm, Poor tumor differentiation, presence of metastasis, The number of involved lymph nodes ≤ 2, and serum Alpha-Fetoprotein)AFP( level ≥ 400 were significantly related to the decreased survival rate of HCC patients after hepatectomy (P < 0.05) There was no significant association between Rh with OS and RFS (P > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Blood group type A, compared to non-A, can be associated with decreased OS and RFS rates in patients with HCC after hepatectomy.

Effect of blood type on mortality among patients with brain metastases

OBJECTIVE

ABO blood type has been associated with mortality among patients with cancer, but this association has thus far not been investigated among patients with brain metastases. Hence, we aimed to investigate the association between ABO blood type and mortality among patients who underwent surgical resection of brain metastases.

METHODS

A single-center retrospective study of patients who underwent surgical resection of brain metastases between 2011 and 2019 was conducted. Cox proportional hazards models were constructed, adjusting for potential confounders, to evaluate whether blood type was independently associated with overall mortality.

RESULTS

A total of 158 patients were included in the analysis. The mean (SD) age of the cohort was 59.3 (12.0) years, and 67.7% of patients were female. The median overall survival of patients with blood type AB was 11.2 months, while the median overall survival of patients with blood types O, B, and A were 11.7, 13.5, and 14.4 months respectively. On univariate analysis, patients with blood type AB had a higher risk of overall mortality (p = 0.017). On multivariate analysis adjusting for potential confounders, blood type AB was again associated with a higher risk of overall mortality (HR: 2.29, 95% CI: 1.11-4.72, p = 0.025).

CONCLUSION

Blood type AB was independently associated with a higher risk of overall mortality among patients who underwent surgical resection of brain metastases, indicating the potential prognostic value of ABO blood type in brain metastases.

The Prognostic Impact of ABO Blood Group in Hepatocellular Carcinoma Following Hepatectomy

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE

The effect of the ABO blood group on the survival of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is unclear. The aim of the present study is to determine the prognostic impact of ABO blood types on the survival of a Japanese population of patients with HCC who underwent surgical resection.

METHODS

Patients with HCC (n = 480) who underwent an R0 resection between 2010 and 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. Survival outcomes were investigated according to ABO blood type (A, B, O, or AB). Outcomes for type A (n = 173) and non-type A (n = 173) groups after surgery were compared using 1-to-1 propensity score matching to control for variables.

RESULTS

In the study cohort, 173 (36.0%), 133 (27.7%), 131 (27.3%), and 43 (9.0%) of participants had Type A, O, B, and AB, respectively. Type A and non-type A patients were successfully matched based on liver function and tumor characteristics. Recurrence-free survival (RFS; hazard ratio [HR] 0.75, 95% confidence interval [Cl] 0.58-0.98, p = 0.038) and overall survival (OS; HR: 0.67, 95% Cl: 0.48-0.95, p = 0.023) for patients with blood type A were both significantly decreased relative to non-type A patients. Cox proportional hazard analysis demonstrated that patients with HCC who have blood type A had a worse prognosis than those with non-type A blood.

CONCLUSION

ABO blood type may have a prognostic impact on patients with HCC after hepatectomy. Blood type A is an independent unfavorable prognostic factor for recurrence-free and overall survival (RFS and OS) after hepatectomy.

The temporal trend of women’s cancer in Changle, China and a migrant epidemiological study

Background

Although the etiology of women’s cancer has been extensively studied in the last few decades, there is still little evidence comparing the temporal pattern of these cancers among different populations.

Methods

Cancer incidence and mortality data from 1988 to 2015 were extracted from the Changle Cancer Register in China, and cancer incidence data for Los Angeles were extracted from Cancer Incidence in Five Continents plus database. A Joinpoint regression model was used to analyze the temporal trends of incidence and mortality for breast, cervical, corpus uteri and ovarian cancers. The standardized incidence ratios were applied to compare the cancer risk across populations.

Results

An increasing trend of incidence rate for breast, cervical, corpus uteri and ovarian cancer was observed in Changle, although the rate leveled off for breast and cervical cancer after 2010, although not statistically significant. The mortality rate of breast and ovarian cancer was slightly increased during this period, while we found a decreased mortality of cervical cancer from 2010. The mortality of corpus uteri cancer showed a decreasing and then increasing trend. The incidence of breast, corpus uteri and ovarian cancer in Chinese American immigrants in Los Angeles was significantly higher than indigenous Changle Chinese and lower than Los Angeles whites. However, the incidence of cervical cancer in Chinese American immigrants shifted from significantly exceeding to lower than Changle Chinese.

Conclusion

The incidence and mortality of women’s cancers in Changle were generally on the rise, and this study concluded that environmental changes were important factors affecting the occurrence of these cancers. Appropriate preventive measures should be taken to control the occurrence of women’s cancers by addressing different influencing factors.

ABO blood groups and expression of blood group antigens of epithelial ovarian cancer in Chinese women

BACKGROUND

ABO blood groups has been associated with risk of several cancers; however, the results for an association with ovarian cancer are inconsistent and little is known about the expression of histo-blood group (ABH) antigens and ABO gene in ovarian tumor tissues.

METHODS

To assess the impact of genotype-derived ABO blood types on the risk of EOC, we conducted a case-control study in 1,870 EOC and 4,829 controls. Expression of A and B antigen in 70 pairs of ovarian tumor tissues and adjacent normal tissues were detected by immunohistochemistry. Gene expression and DNA methylation profiling was conducted in ovarian tumor tissues.

RESULTS

We identified that blood group A was associated with increased risk for EOC compared to blood group O (OR = 1.18, 95% CI = 1.03-1.36, p = 0.019). Increased frequency of aberrant expression of histo-blood group antigens was observed in patients with blood group A (76.5%) compared to patients with blood group O (21.1%) and B (5.0%) by immunohistochemistry (p < 0.001). ABO gene expression was down-regulated in ovarian tumor tissues compared with paired adjacent normal tissues (p = 0.027). In addition, ABO gene expression was positively correlated with NFYB (r = 0.38, p < 0.001) and inversely correlated with DNA methylation level of four CpG sites on ABO gene (cg11879188, r = - 0.3, p = 0.002; cg22535403, r = - 0.30, p = 0.002; cg13506600, r = - 0.22, p = 0.025; cg07241568, r = - 0.21, p = 0.049) in ovarian tumor tissues.

CONCLUSION

We identified blood group A was associated with increased EOC risk in Chinese women and provided the clues of the possible molecular mechanisms of blood group A related to ovarian cancer risk.

The frequency and prognostic significance of ABO/Rh blood groups in male breast cancer patients: A multicenter study

The study evaluated the distributions and prognostic significance of ABO and rhesus (D) groups in male breast cancer (MBC) patients. The data of 137 patients were retrospectively reviewed. Clinical, histopathological data and ABO/Rh blood groups of the patients were recorded. The ABO/Rh blood group distributions were compared to the healthy men control group (n = 120,160) by the chi-square test. Overall distributions of ABO blood groups were different between the patients (17.5% AB, 38% A, 19% B, and 25.5% O) and control group (7.88% AB, 42.06% A, 15.22% B, and 34.84% O) (P < .001). There were significant differences between the patients and control group with respect to AB vs non-AB blood group distributions (P < .001, odds ratio: 2.43, 95% CI) and O vs non-O blood group distributions (P = .016, odds ratio: 0.62, 95% CI). However, A vs non-A and B vs non-B blood group distributions were not significantly different. The distribution of the Rh factor was similar between patients and the control group (P = .93). In univariate analysis, ABO/Rh blood groups were not a prognostic factor on OS (P = .29). The frequency of the AB blood group in MBC patients is increased than in the healthy control group. AB blood group may be a risk factor for MBC, whereas O blood group may be a protective factor.

ABO Blood Group and the Risk of Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Kashmir, a High Risk Region

BACKGROUND

ABO blood group has been linked with a number of diseases including cancer. Association of ABO blood type with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) has been sparsely reported and the results are inconsistent. We undertook this study to analyze if any association exists between the ABO and Rh blood groups and ESCC risk.

METHODS

We conducted a hospital-based case control study to analyze ABO and Rh blood groups in patients with histologically proven diagnosis of ESCC and compared them with healthy donors from the same population. ABO and Rh blood group status of general population was obtained from the blood bank at Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) and from original articles published from time to time. Chi-Square test was performed to look for statistical significance.

RESULTS

For this study, 206 patients were prospectively enrolled. Seventy-four (35.9%) patients had blood group O. Blood groups type A and type B was found each in 59 (28.6%) patients. In 108,014 healthy donors, 35.3% had blood type O followed by type B (33.66%). There was no significant difference in any of the blood types between patients with ESCC and donors (P = 0.31).

CONCLUSION

No association exists between ABO blood type and the risk of ESCC.

Associations between Genetically Predicted Circulating Protein Concentrations and Endometrial Cancer Risk

Simple Summary

Endometrial cancer is the leading female reproductive tract cancer in developed countries. Discovering new biomarkers is critical for understanding the etiology this cancer and identifying women with a higher risk of this cancer from the general population. Several blood protein biomarkers have been linked to endometrial cancer in previous studies, but these studies have assessed only a limited number of biomarkers usually among a small number of participants. The current study aimed at identifying novel circulating protein biomarkers of endometrial cancer by using the largest available dataset to date. Our finding suggested nine proteins to be associated with endometrial cancer risk, and five of the identified associations showed suggestive associations with risk of non-endometrioid EC, a much more lethal subtype. If validated by additional studies, our findings may contribute to understanding the pathogenesis of endometrial tumor development and facilitating the risk assessment of endometrial cancer.

Abstract

Endometrial cancer (EC) is the leading female reproductive tract malignancy in developed countries. Currently, genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified 17 risk loci for EC. To identify novel EC-associated proteins, we used previously reported protein quantitative trait loci for 1434 plasma proteins as instruments to evaluate associations between genetically predicted circulating protein concentrations and EC risk. We studied 12,906 cases and 108,979 controls of European descent included in the Endometrial Cancer Association Consortium, the Epidemiology of Endometrial Cancer Consortium, and the UK Biobank. We observed associations between genetically predicted concentrations of nine proteins and EC risk at a false discovery rate of <0.05 (p-values range from 1.14 × 10⁻¹⁰ to 3.04 × 10⁻⁴). Except for vascular cell adhesion protein 1, all other identified proteins were independent from known EC risk variants identified in EC GWAS. The respective odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) per one standard deviation increase in genetically predicted circulating protein concentrations were 1.21 (1.13, 1.30) for DNA repair protein RAD51 homolog 4, 1.27 (1.14, 1.42) for desmoglein-2, 1.14 (1.07, 1.22) for MHC class I polypeptide-related sequence B, 1.05 (1.02, 1.08) for histo-blood group ABO system transferase, 0.77 (0.68, 0.89) for intestinal-type alkaline phosphatase, 0.82 (0.74, 0.91) for carbohydrate sulfotransferase 15, 1.07 (1.03, 1.11) for D-glucuronyl C5-epimerase, and 1.07 (1.03, 1.10) for CD209 antigen. In conclusion, we identified nine potential EC-associated proteins. If validated by additional studies, our findings may contribute to understanding the pathogenesis of endometrial tumor development and identifying women at high risk of EC along with other EC risk factors and biomarkers.

Prognostic impact of ABO blood group on type I endometrial cancer in a population of Iranian patients

BACKGROUND

Inherited ABO blood group has been shown to play an important role in the pathogenesis of various gynecological cancers including endometrial carcinoma (EC).

OBJECTIVE

Our study aimed to determine the prevalence of ABO blood groups in Iranian patients with EC and to investigate the relationship between the blood group and several clinicopathologic parameters in Imam Hossein Hospital.

METHODS

One hundred and seventy-five EC patients were selected and analyzed for their clinicopathologic details including ABO blood group, age, menopausal status, body mass index (BMI), tumor grade, and stage of the International Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecology (FIGO).

RESULTS

Endometrioid carcinoma was the most common histological type in this case study. Early stages (I and II) were present in 135 individuals (77.1%) and advanced stages (III and IV) appeared in 40 (22.9%) patients. Blood group A was prominent in patients with EC. There was a significant relationship between blood group A and cancer grade (P= 0.024). 23.1% of group A had grade III EC, while this grade appeared in 35.2% of the non-A blood group. There was no significant association between ABO blood groups and other EC clinic-pathological results (P> 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Although there was no significant relationship between the ABO blood group and the patients' clinicopathological characteristics, more studies could provide extensive information about any possible relation between the blood group, especially blood group A, EC, and the grade of the tumor.

Is ABO blood group a risk or prognostic factor for patients with endometrioid endometrial cancer? A retrospective analysis in Germany

BACKGROUND

A relationship is known to exist between gastric and pancreatic cancers and ABO antigens, caused by various immune modulations related to the ABO blood group of the patient. A similar relationship with regard to gynaecological cancers remains controversial.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Patients who underwent surgery for endometrioid endometrial cancer in International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage I, II, III or IV from 2006 to 2018 were identified. The research explored the existence of a relationship between the patients' blood group or Rhesus factor and the incidence of endometrial cancer, grade (G1, G2, G3), FIGO stage, nodal status, recurrence, menopausal status, parity, and body mass index. Statistical methods such as the chi-square test, analysis of variance and the Scheffé post-hoc test were used.

RESULTS

Two hundred and two patients with endometrioid endometrial cancer were included: 96 had blood group A, 19 blood group B, 75 blood group 0, and 12 had blood group AB. This distribution corresponds to the general blood group distribution in Germany. The vast majority of the dependent variables, such as grade, FIGO stage, nodal status or recurrence were not significantly associated with ABO blood group or Rhesus factor status. The relative frequencies of G1 and G3 endometrial cancers with respect to blood group were similar. Menopausal status, parity, and body mass index were not related to more advanced FIGO stages at initial diagnosis or to ABO blood group.

DISCUSSION

Blood group screening would probably not be helpful in the diagnosis of endometrioid endometrial carcinomas in early stages compared to the current gold standard. Furthermore, a specific blood group does not increase either the risk of recurrence or the risk of a dedifferentiated type of endometrial carcinoma.

Association of ABO polymorphisms and pancreatic Cancer/ Cardiocerebrovascular disease: a meta-analysis

Background

ABO gene polymorphisms have been reported to be associated with the risk of multiple cancers and cardiocerebrovascular diseases. However, the results remained controversial. In this study, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to clarify the association between two SNPs (rs505922 and rs657152) in ABO gene and cancers/cardiocerebrovascular diseases.

Method

All eligible case-control studies come from PubMed, Embase and Web of Science up to Jan. 1, 2019. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to assess the corresponding associations. Sensitivity analysis, publication bias assessment, and heterogeneity test were performed using STATA 12.0.

Results

A total of nineteen articles involving twenty-two case-control populations were included according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Twelve populations (20,820 cases and 27,837 controls) were used to evaluate the relationship between rs505922 and overall cancers and nine populations (22,275 cases and 71,549 controls) were included to assess the association between rs505922 and cardiocerebrovascular diseases. The results showed a significant association between the rs505922 polymorphism and cancers (CvsT: OR = 1.13, 95%CI = 1.05–1.22, P = 0.001), and cardiocerebrovascular diseases (OR = 1.36, 95%CI = 1.19–1.57, P < 0.001). Five populations (8660 cases and 10,618 controls) were included to evaluate association between rs657152 and cancers and five populations (8105 cases and 6712 controls) were included to estimate the relationship between rs657152 and cardiocerebrovascular diseases. The result of meta-analysis reveals that rs657152 was significantly associated with cancers (OR = 1.18, 95%CI = 1.13–1.23, P < 0.001) and cardiocerebrovascular diseases (OR = 1.54, 95%CI = 1.24–1.92, P < 0.001).

Conclusion

Our study suggested that ABO polymorphisms might serve as a risk factor of pancreatic cancers and cardiocerebrovascular diseases.

Prognostic value of ABO blood group in a Chinese population in Northwest China region with curatively resected rectal cancer

A positive association between the ABO blood types and survival has been suggested in several malignancies. However, little is known about the relationship between ABO blood group and survival in rectal cancer patients. The aim of this study was to assess the role of the ABO blood types in predicting the prognosis of a Chinese population in Northwest China region with curatively resected rectal cancer. We retrospectively analyzed 1613 consecutive patients who underwent curative surgery for rectal cancer between June, 2011 and December, 2016. The relationship between the ABO blood types and overall survival (OS) was analyzed. The median follow-up period of the 1613 rectal cancer patients was 69.6 months with 1427 alive. There was a significance difference of survival among ABO blood groups (P=0.007). The mean overall survival (OS) of the blood type B patients was 70.8 months, O was 64.3, whereas the mean OS of the AB and A blood type patients was significantly lower, 58.4 months and 59.7 months respectively (P=0.007, log-rank test). Compared with patients with A and AB blood types, patients with blood type B and O were more likely to have better survival(P=0.001). A blood groups were associated with significantly decreased overall survival in rectal cancer patients (hazard ratio = 1.263; 95% confidence interval = 0.776-2.054, P =0.010). In order to confirm our above results, we performed the same investigation in an independent cohort from another hospital of 505 Chinese patients and get the similar results. Our study showed that ABO blood group is associated with survival in Northwest Chinese patients with rectal cancer and the blood type B and O were favourable prognostic factors for patients with rectal cancer.

AB0 Blood Group and Ovarian Cancer Survival

Background: Epithelial ovarian cancer is the most lethal gynecological malignancy because is usually diagnosed at advanced stage. New prognostic factors have been investigated but these biomarkers do not have a strong direct relationship with survival. Several studies investigated the association between AB0 blood group with ovarian cancer but with conflicting results. We investigated the association between AB0 blood group and epithelial ovarian cancer patients consecutively surgically treated at our department from 2004 to 2015.

Methods: Clinical charts of ovarian cancer patients treated and followed from 2004 to 2015 were checked for inclusion and exclusion criteria. Clinical and pathological data were recorded in an electronic separate, anonymous, password-protected database. All relevant data were extrapolated and used for final analysis.

Results: A population of 265 ovarian cancer patients was analyzed in this study. 121 (45.6%) patients presented blood type 0, 112 (42.3%) had blood type A, 23 (8.7%) B and 9 (3.4%) AB. A significantly lower percentage of death (8.7%) in patients with blood type B in comparison with patients presenting different genotypes (group 0: 34.7%, group A: 32.1%, group AB: 22.2%) was found. In invasive serous ovarian cancer patients the analysis showed a 5 fold significant reduction of the risk of death in patients with B genotype. However, postoperative residual tumor resulted the most important prognostic factor for overall survival.

Conclusions: AB0 blood group might be a preoperative prognostic factor in epithelial ovarian cancer patients. According to the literature, postoperative residual disease remain the most important prognostic factor also in our study.

Role of genetic factors and ethnicity on the multiplicity of Plasmodium falciparum infection in children with asymptomatic malaria in Yaoundé, Cameroon

In this cross-sectional study, we investigated host genetic factors and ethnic variation in circulating Plasmodium falciparum merozoite surface protein 2 (msp-2) clones among children with asymptomatic malaria. Isolates from seventy two asymptomatic malaria children were used for genotyping block 3 of msp-2 gene by nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Sickle cell trait and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency were analysed by restriction fragment length polymorphism of DNA products from PCR targeting codons 6 and 68 of the beta-globin (HBB) and G6PD genes respectively. ABO blood group was typed by agglutination method. A total of forty two msp-2 genotypes (20 for 3D7 and 22 for FC27) were detected for an average (standard error of mean) multiplicity of infection (MOI) of 2.45 (0.16). The MOI was statistically the same among the five identified ethnic groups (P = 0.83). The overall prevalence of sickle cell trait and G6PD deficiency were 12.50 % and 22.22 % respectively. MOI was similar between children with Hb AA and Hb AS genotypes (P = 0.42). MOI was significantly high among children with a mutant G6PD genotype (P = 0.017). MOI was significantly higher in blood group O than group A (P = 0.03). Our findings show that although ethnicity and sickle cell trait have no association with MOI, the association was observed with G6PD genotype and ABO group. The results suggest the need for extension and expansion of the current study in order to investigate the mechanisms involved.

ABO blood groups as a prognostic factor for recurrence in ovarian and vulvar cancer

The relationship between ABO blood groups (BG) and risk of incidence in cancers including gynecological cancers has been widely studied, showing increased incidence risk for BG A patients. As available data are inconsistent we investigated whether BG and their anti-glycan antibodies (anti-A and anti-B) have prognostic values in gynecological cancers. We retrospectively evaluated 974 patients with gynecological cancers in three cancer centers (Switzerland and Australia) between 1974 and 2014 regarding the relationships between clinico-pathological findings and the BG. Time to disease recurrence was significantly influenced by BG in patients with ovarian (n = 282) and vulvar (n = 67) cancer. BG O or B patients showed a significantly increased risk for ovarian cancer relapse compared to A, 59% and 82%, respectively (p = 0.045; HR O vs A = 1.59 (CI 1.01-2.51) and (p = 0.036; HR A vs B = 0.55 (CI 0.32-0.96). Median time to relapse for advanced stage (n = 126) ovarian cancer patients was 18.2 months for BG O and 32.2 for A (p = 0.031; HR O vs A = 2.07 (CI 1.07-4.02)). BG also significantly influenced relapse-free survival in patients with vulvar cancer (p = 0.002), with BG O tending to have increased relapse risk compared to A (p = 0.089). Blood groups hence associate with recurrence in ovarian and vulvar cancer: women with BG O seem to have a lower ovarian cancer incidence, however are more likely to relapse earlier. The significance of the BG status as a prognostic value is evident and may be helpful to oncologists in prognosticating disease outcome and selecting the appropriate therapy.

ABO Blood Group and Endometrial Carcinoma: A Preliminary Single-Center Experience from Saudi Arabia

Introduction: Inherited ABO blood groups have been shown to play possible contributions in the pathogenesis of various gynecologic and non-gynecologic carcinomas. With regard to gynecologic carcinomas, there is a confined number of studies that explored the relationship between ABO blood group and endometrial carcinoma (EC) in the PubMed-indexed literature. To the best of our knowledge, no such study has ever been conducted in Saudi Arabia.

Objectives: Our study has two objectives: (I) to determine the prevalence of ABO blood groups among Saudi patients with EC, and (II) to explore the relationship between ABO blood group and several clinico-pathological prognostic parameters (namely: menopausal status [age], body mass index [BMI], tumor grade, FIGO [Fédération Internationale de Gynécologie et d'Obstétrique] stage and recurrence) in Saudi patients with EC.

Materials and Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study from 01-January-2010 to 31-July-2014 was conducted at King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia — a referral tertiary healthcare institute. One-hundred and fourteen patients (n=114) were included in the study. Clinico-pathological data were extrapolated from medical records, and their association with ABO blood groups were evaluated. Categorical data were presented as number of cases (n) and percentages (%). Two-tailed Chi-square test was used for univariate analysis. For all purposes, p values <0.05 were regarded as statistically significant.

Results: The mean age and BMI were 59.5 ± 10.8 years (range: 31 – 90) and 36.6 ± 8.6 kg/m² (range: 17 – 60), respectively. The vast majority of patients were post-menopausal (86%), had BMI >28 kg/m² (84.2%), diagnosed with early FIGO stage I-II (76.3%) and developed no recurrence (86.8%). The frequencies of ABO blood group types A, B, AB, and O were 28.1%, 12.3%, 3.5% and 56.1%, respectively. When ABO blood groups were analyzed as four different types (A, B, AB and O), O-type was the most common ABO blood group in pre- and post-menopausal EC patients (43.8% and 58.2%, respectively; p=0.14). There were no statistically significant correlations between ABO blood groups and all the examined clinico-pathological factors. Moreover, when ABO blood groups were analyzed as two different types (O and non-O), similar results were obtained; no statistically significant correlations were found between ABO blood groups and all the examined clinico-pathological factors.

Conclusions: O-type was the most prevalent ABO blood group among Saudi Arabian patients with EC, and our finding was different from the existing literature, probably highlighting an ethnic-related variance. Furthermore, no statistically significant correlations were identified between ABO blood groups and all the examined clinico-pathological factors. Also, routine ABO blood group may emerge as a clinically accessible, beneficial and economical biomarker for a possible EC vulnerability. A large-sized case-control study is needed to withdraw solid conclusions.

Glioblastoma and ABO blood groups: further evidence of an association between the distribution of blood group antigens and brain tumours

BACKGROUND

Glioblastoma is a highly malignant brain tumour that usually leads to death. Several studies have reported a link between the distribution of ABO blood group antigens and a risk of developing specific types of cancer, although no consensus has been reached. This study aims to investigate the relationship between the distribution of ABO blood group antigens and the incidence of glioblastoma.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The study cohort consisted of 115 glioblastoma patients who were diagnosed at King Abdullah University Hospital, Jordan, between 2004 and 2015. Three different patient populations made up three control groups and these were selected from among patients at the same institution between 2014 and 2015 as follows: 3,847 healthy blood donors, 654 accidental trauma patients admitted to the Departments of Neurosurgery and Orthopaedics, and 230 age- and sex-matched control subjects recruited blindly from the Departments of Paediatrics and Internal Medicine.

RESULTS

There was a significant association between the distribution of ABO blood group antigens and the incidence of glioblastoma. Post hoc residual analysis revealed that individuals with group A had a higher than expected chance of developing glioblastoma, while individuals with group O had a lower than expected chance. Furthermore, individuals with group A were found to be at a 1.62- to 2.28-fold increased risk of developing glioblastoma compared to individuals with group O.

DISCUSSION

In the present study, we demonstrate that, in Jordan, individuals with group A have an increased risk of developing glioblastoma, while individuals with group O have a reduced risk. These findings suggest that the distribution of ABO blood group antigens is associated with a risk of brain tumours and may play an important role in their development. However, further clinical and experimental investigations are required to confirm this association.

Prognostic Impact of ABO Blood Group on Type I Endometrial Cancer Patients- Results from Our Own and Other Studies

Objectives: The ABO blood group antigens were found on most epithelial cells and in secretions. In the normal endometrium there is a variable expression of histo-blood group and related antigens suggesting a hormonal regulation. A relationship between ABO blood groups and endometrial cancer has been investigated with contradictory results. In this study we investigated the influence of blood types on clinical and pathological characteristics of endometrial cancer patients.

Method: Retrospective cohort study. Clinical and pathological data were extrapolated and their association with blood groups were assessed.

Results: A total of 203 type I endometrial cancer patients were included in the final analysis. Univariate analysis indicated that a lower frequency of G3 undifferentiated tumors was observed in patients with A blood group (P=0.027). Multivariate analysis, including also clinical features such as Age, BMI, parity, hypertension and diabetes confirmed that patients with A group present a lower risk of G3 tumors in comparison with not A patients. (OR=0.32, P=0.011).

Conclusions: Patients with A genotype have a lower risk to develop G3 type I endometrial cancer. ABO blood group might represent a useful, easy access and cheap biomarker for patients' selection and for management personalization of endometrial cancer patients.

Lack of associations of the COMT Val158Met polymorphism with risk of endometrial and ovarian cancer: a pooled analysis of case-control studies

This meta-analysis was conducted to examine whether the genotype status of Val158Met polymorphism in catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) is associated with endometrial and ovarian cancer risk. Eligible studies were identified by searching several databases for relevant reports published before January 1, 2014. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) were appropriately derived from fixed-effects or random-effects models. In total, 15 studies (1,293 cases and 2,647 controls for ovarian cancer and 2,174 cases and 2,699 controls for endometrial cancer) were included in the present meta-analysis. When all studies were pooled into the meta-analysis, there was no evidence for significant association between COMT Val158Met polymorphism and ovarian cancer risk (Val/Met versus Val/Val: OR=0.91, 95% CI=0.76-1.08; Met/Met versus Val/Val: OR=0.90, 95% CI=0.73-1.10; dominant model: OR=0.90, 95% CI=0.77-1.06; recessive model: OR=0.95, 95% CI=0.80-1.13). Similarly, no associations were found in all comparisons for endometrial cancer (Val/Met versus Val/Val: OR 0.97, 95% CI=0.77-1.21; Met/Met versus Val/Val: OR=1.02, 95% CI=0.73-1.42; dominant model: OR=0.98, 95% CI=0.77-1.25; recessive model: OR=1.02, 95% CI=0.87-1.20). In the subgroup analyses by source of control and ethnicity, no significant associations were found in any subgroup of population. This meta-analysis strongly suggests that COMT Val158Met polymorphism is not associated with increased endometrial and ovarian cancer risk.

ABO blood groups in relation to breast carcinoma incidence and associated prognostic factors in Moroccan women

The association between blood groups ABO and different types of diseases was established in several previous studies. Our aim was to seek the possible association between the ABO blood group and breast cancer-associated prognostic factors. The Chi-squared analytic test was used to compare phenotypic ABO distribution among Moroccan blood donors and 442 cases of women suffering from breast carcinoma with archived files in Maternity Ward of University Hospital C.H.U Ibn Rochd between 2008 and 2011. High incidence of breast carcinoma was observed in blood type B patients (p < 0.05). Blood type B was associated with breast carcinomas overexpressing human epidermal growth factor receptor HER2 (p < 0.05) and high risk of cancer at age over 70 years (p < 0.001). Blood type A was associated with high risk of cancer among women younger than 35 years old. Blood type A and AB were associated with high incidence of lymph node metastasis (p < 0.05). Multivariate analysis has shown correlation between O blood type and estrogen receptor-positive tumor. Patients with blood group A, B, and AB were more likely to develop aggressive breast carcinoma. Further follow-up studies are necessary to clarify the role of ABH antigens in the progression of breast carcinoma.

The role of the histoblood ABO group in cancer

Since the first link between blood type and cancer was described in 1953, numerous studies have sought to determine whether the histoblood ABO group is associated with tumorigenesis. In 2009, the first significant association between a SNP located within the ABO glycosyltransferase gene and increased risk of pancreatic cancer was reported. Here, we describe the history and possible functions of the histoblood ABO group and then provide evidence for a role of blood group antigens in the most common cancer types worldwide using both blood type and SNP data. We also explore whether confusion regarding the role of blood type in cancer risk may be attributable to heterogeneity within tumor types.

Lay abstract: ABO encodes the protein responsible for defining blood groups as A, B, AB or O. Despite over a century of investigation, it is not well known whether the blood group antigens have a function or if they contribute to human health. Over the last 60 years, associations between blood type and cancer risk have been reported, although the data have often been conflicting. To better understand the possible role of the ABO blood group in tumorigenesis, we review the data for the most common tumor types worldwide.

Assessing ABO/Rh Blood Group Frequency and Association with Asymptomatic Malaria among Blood Donors Attending Arba Minch Blood Bank, South Ethiopia

Background. Determination of the various ABO/Rh blood group distributions and their association with malaria infection has paramount importance in the context of transfusion medicine and malaria control. Methods. Facility based cross-sectional study was conducted from February to June, 2015, to assess ABO/Rh blood groups distribution and their association with asymptomatic malaria. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data. Blood grouping was done using monoclonal antibodies. Thin and thick blood films were examined for Plasmodium parasites. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 20.0. Results. A total of 416 blood donors participated with median age of 22 ± 0.29 (median ± standard error of the mean). Distribution of ABO phenotypes, in decreasing order, was O (175, 42.1%), A (136, 32.7%), B (87, 20.9%), and AB (18, 4.3%). Most of them were Rh+ (386, 92.8%). The overall malaria prevalence was 4.1% (17/416). ABO blood group is significantly associated with malaria infection (P = 0.022). High rate of parasitemia was seen in blood group O donors (6.899, P = 0.003) compared to those with other ABO blood groups. Conclusion. Blood groups O and AB phenotypes are the most and the least ABO blood groups, respectively. There is significant association between ABO blood group and asymptomatic malaria parasitemia.

Prognostic Impact of ABO Blood Group on the Survival in Patients with Ovarian Cancer

PURPOSE

The impact of ABO blood group on the survival of patients with ovarian cancer remains uncertain. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic value of the ABO blood group in ovarian cancer patients.

METHODS

256 ovarian cancer patients who received a cytoreductive surgery were retrospectively reviewed. The prognostic impact of the ABO blood group with respect to overall survival (OS) was analyzed.

RESULTS

The median follow-up time was 57 months and the 5-year OS was 70.1%. The 5-year OS were 55.0%, 83.3%, 82.5%, and 70.0% in patients with A, B, AB, and O blood type, respectively (p = 0.003). Patients with blood type A had a poorer 5-year OS than patients with blood type non-A (55.0% vs. 75.0%, p = 0.001), especially in patients with age > 50 years (40.0% vs. 62.5%, p = 0.004). Univariate Cox analyses showed that blood type A was significantly associated with OS than those with non-A types (hazard ratio (HR) 2.210, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.373-3.557, p = 0.001). Blood type A remained an independent prognostic factor for OS than those with non-A blood types in multivariate analyses (HR 2.235, 95% CI 1.360-3.674, p = 0.002).

CONCLUSION

ABO blood group is associated with survival in patients with ovarian cancer, patients with blood type A had a significantly worse OS than patients with non-A blood types, especially in patients with age > 50 years.

Clinical characteristics of acute lymphoblastic leukemia in male and female patients: A retrospective analysis of 705 patients

The aim of the present study was to compare the clinical characteristics of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) that occurred in male and female patients at one institution in Southern China. The medical electronic records of Nanfang Hospital, affiliated to Southern Medical University, were searched for patients with a definite diagnosis of ALL that were diagnosed between January 1, 2001 and December 31, 2012. The clinical data of the patients were collected and analyzed. A total of 705 eligible patients were identified. The gender ratio of male to female patients was 1.84:1. The average ages at the time of diagnosis were 16.43 and 19.54 years for male and female patients, respectively (P=0.007). No significant differences were identified in the seasonal occurrence distribution, blood group distribution or ratio for the presence of the Ph chromosome between males and females. However, a higher incidence of T-cell type ALL was identified in males (P=0.023). The present study reveals that ALL demonstrates a male predominance, but similar clinical characteristics of ALL are present in males and females in Southern China.

Is ABO blood type associated with ovarian stimulation response in patients with diminished ovarian reserve?

PURPOSE

Recent studies have explored the relationship between ABO blood type and serum markers of ovarian reserve, specifically follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and anti-mullerian hormone (AMH). The primary objective of this study is to investigate whether there is an association between ABO blood type and ovarian stimulation response in patients with serum markers of diminished ovarian reserve (DOR).

METHODS

This is a retrospective study of all patients undergoing controlled ovarian stimulation (COS) for in vitro fertilization (IVF) between May 2010 and July 2013. Patients were sub-grouped, a priori, based on serum AMH levels: ≤1 ng/mL, ≤0.5 ng/mL and ≤0.16 ng/mL. Within each sub-group, demographic, baseline IVF characteristics and COS response parameters based on ABO blood types were compared. The number of mature oocytes retrieved was considered the primary outcome. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Chi-square tests were used to compare means and percentages between ABO blood types within groups.

RESULTS

Complete data was available for 2575 patients. The mean (± SD) age and BMI of the study cohort was 38.9 (±3.97) years, 23.4 (±5.91) kg/m(2), respectively. The distribution of ABO blood types in the cohort was as follows: 36.8 % (A), 6.56 % (AB), 17.3 % (B), and 39.3 % (O). The demographics and baseline IVF characteristics were comparable among patients with blood types A, AB, B, and O within each AMH group. Within each AMH sub-group, no difference was found in the total days of COS, total gonadotropins administered, peak estradiol level, or number of mature oocytes retrieved based on blood type.

CONCLUSIONS

Our results suggest no association between ABO blood type and ovarian stimulation response in patients with DOR. The predictive value of ABO blood type in determining ovarian stimulation response in such patients is currently limited.

ABO blood groups and risk of cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

For decades, studies have been performed to evaluate the association between ABO blood groups and risk of cancer. However, whether ABO blood groups are associated with overall cancer risk remains unclear. We therefore conducted a meta-analysis of observational studies to assess this association.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A search of Pubmed, Embase, ScienceDirect, Wiley, and Web of Knowledge databases (to May 2013) was supplemented by manual searches of bibliographies of key retrieved articles and relevant reviews. We included case-control studies and cohort studies with more than 100 cancer cases.

RESULTS

The search yielded 89 eligible studies that reported 100,554 cases at 30 cancer sites. For overall cancer risk, the pooled OR was 1.12 (95%CI: 1.09-1.16) for A vs. non- A groups, and 0.84 (95%CI: 0.80-0.88) for O vs. non-O groups. For individual cancer sites, blood group A was found to confer increased risk of gastric cancer (OR=1.18; 95%CI: 1.13-1.24), pancreatic cancer (OR=1.23; 95%CI: 1.15-1.32), breast cancer (OR=1.12; 95%CI: 1.01-1.24), ovarian cancer (OR=1.16; 95%CI: 1.04-1.27), and nasopharyngeal cancer (OR=1.17; 95%CI: 1.00-1.33). Blood group O was found to be linked to decreased risk of gastric cancer (OR=0.84; 95%CI: 0.80-0.88), pancreatic cancer (OR=0.75; 95%CI: 0.70-0.80), breast cancer (OR=0.90; 95%CI: 0.85-0.95), colorectal cancer (OR=0.89; 95%CI: 0.81-0.96), ovarian cancer (OR=0.76; 95%CI: 0.53-1.00), esophagus cancer (OR=0.94; 95%CI: 0.89-1.00), and nasopharyngeal cancer (OR=0.81; 95%CI: 0.70-0.91).

CONCLUSIONS

Blood group A is associated with increased risk of cancer, and blood group O is associated with decreased risk of cancer.

Blood type predicts live birth in the infertile population

PURPOSE

To determine if blood type in infertile women relates to the likelihood for live birth (LB) following IVF, and to the etiology for infertility.

METHODS

Retrospective study of patients undergoing IVF at two academic centers in the northeast US. Relationships between blood type (A, B, AB, O) and patient characteristics, IVF cycle parameters and LB were assessed utilizing multivariable logistic regression analyses.

RESULTS

In the studied population (n=626), women with type O were significantly more likely to have baseline FSH > 10 IU/L after adjusting for age, BMI and race (OR 5.09, 95 % CI 1.4-18.7, p=0.01). Conversely, women with blood type A were significantly more likely to have ovulatory infertility compared to those with blood type O after adjusting for age and BMI (OR 3.2, 95 % CI 1.7-6.2). Blood type B was associated with increased likelihood of live birth (OR 1.9, 95 % CI 1.10-3.41, p=0.03) after adjusting for factors recognized to impact IVF outcome.

CONCLUSION

Ovulatory infertility and baseline FSH > 10 IU/L were more prevalent in women with blood type A and O respectively. However, those of blood type B had significantly higher odds for LB compared to other blood types after adjusting for factors recognized to impact on IVF cycle outcome. While underlying mechanisms are unclear, for infertile women, patient's blood type is seemingly relevant for IVF cycle outcome.

Hemostasis, cancer, and ABO blood group: the most recent evidence of association

Human ABO blood group antigens are expressed on the surface of red blood cells and a variety of human cells and tissues. However, an increasingly number of studies show that the ABO blood group, in addition to its fundamental role in transfusion medicine and in several other disciplines, has a causal role in predisposing to several human diseases, including hemostasis and neoplastic disorders, which will be the focus of this narrative review.

The ABO blood group is an independent prognostic factor in patients with resected non-small cell lung cancer

Background

The ABO blood group is reported to be associated with the incidence and patient survival for several types of malignancies. We conducted a retrospective study to evaluate the prognostic significance of the ABO blood group in patients with resected non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Methods

A total of 333 patients (218 men and 115 women) with resected NSCLC were included in this study. In addition to age, sex, smoking status, preoperative serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) level, operative procedure, histology of tumors, pathological stage (p-stage), and adjuvant therapy, the association between the ABO blood group and survival was explored.

Results

The 5-year overall and disease-free survival rates were 83.0% and 71.6% for blood group O, 67.2% and 62.3% for blood group A, 68.8% and 68.8% for blood group B and 69.2% and 65.3% for blood group AB, respectively. A multivariate analysis for overall survival showed the ABO blood group (group A vs. group O: HR 2.47, group AB vs. group O: HR 3.62) to be an independent significant prognostic factor, in addition to age, sex, smoking status, p-stage, and serum CEA level. A multivariate analysis for disease-free survival also showed the ABO blood group to be an independent significant prognostic factor.

Conclusions

The ABO blood group is an independent prognostic factor in patients with resected NSCLC. Studies of other larger cohorts are therefore needed to confirm the relationship between the ABO blood group and the prognosis among patients with resected NSCLC.

ABO blood group and the risk of cancer among middle-aged people in Taiwan

AIM

The relationship between ABO blood group and cancer was observed in many epidemiological researches. Our aim is to study the relationship between ABO blood group and the risk of cancer in the Taiwanese population.

METHODS

We followed 3180 men and 3124 women with baseline ages ranging from 20 to 65 years for 27 years. Blood group information was obtained from registration on Identity Card. Cancer incidence information was confirmed by reviewing National Cancer Registry. Hazard ratios (HRs) for cancers according to ABO blood group were calculated using Cox proportional hazards models with multivariate adjustment.

RESULTS

During an average of 27 years of follow-up, the adjusted HR of total cancer was 1.66 (95% CI, 1.20-2.30) for blood group AB in men and 1.28 (95% CI, 1.03-1.59) for blood group A in women, compared to blood group O of their respective gender. A significant excess risk was found among subjects with presence of A antigen. This positive association was mainly observed in cancers from lung cancer (HR: 1.88 [95% CI: 1.29-2.75]) and gastrointestinal cancer (HR: 1.25 [95% CI: 1.00-1.61]) in men, as well as liver cancer (HR: 1.69 [95% CI: 1.02-2.79]) and gastrointestinal cancer (HR: 1.49 [95% CI: 1.10-2.04]) in women.

CONCLUSION

These data suggest that ABO blood group is significantly associated with cancer risk. Men with blood group AB, women with blood group A, and subjects with presence of A antigen were more likely to develop cancers.

Genome-wide association study identifies new susceptibility loci for epithelial ovarian cancer in Han Chinese women

Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death from gynaecological malignancies worldwide. Here we perform a three-stage genome-wide association study (GWAS) in Han Chinese women to identify risk genetic variants for epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). We scan 900,015 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 1,057 EOC cases and 1,191 controls in stage I, and replicate 41 SNPs (P(meta)<10(-4)) in 960 EOC cases and 1,799 controls (stage II), and an additional 492 EOC cases and 1,004 controls (stage III). Finally, we identify two EOC susceptibility loci at 9q22.33 (rs1413299 in COL15A1, P(meta) = 1.88 × 10(-8)) and 10p11.21 (rs1192691 near ANKRD30A, P(meta) = 2.62 × 10(-8)), and two consistently replicated loci at 12q14.2 (rs11175194 in SRGAP1, P(meta) = 1.14 × 10(-7)) and 9q34.2 (rs633862 near ABO and SURF6, P(meta) = 8.57 × 10(-7)) (P<0.05 in all three stages). These results may advance our understanding of genetic susceptibility to EOC.

ABO blood groups are not associated with treatment response and prognosis in patients with local advanced non- small cell lung cancer

BACKGROUND

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death, late diagnosis being the main obstacle to improving the outcomes with stage at diagnosis as an important prognostic factor. Relationships between ABO blood groups and risk of benign or malignant diseases have been observed and in this study, we aimed to investigate whether they might affect prognosis and response to chemoradiotherapy in patients with local advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Eighty-one patients with non-metastatic local advanced NSCLC were included in the study. ABO blood groups were A in 45 (55.6%), B in 7 (8.6%), AB in 8 (9.9%), and O in 21 (25.9%) patients. The patients were also divided two groups according to blood group A (45 patients) and non-A (B, AB and O; 36 patients). Response to chemoradiotherapy was complete remission in 10 (12.3%), disease regression in 42 (51.9%), stable disease in 12 (14.8%), and disease progression in 17 (21.0%) patients.

RESULTS

There was no significant difference among ABO blood group categories or between patients with A blood group and those with non-A blood group in terms of responses to chemoradiotherapy (p>0.05). There were also no significant differences regarding overall and disease-free survival rates.

CONCLUSION

The ABO blood group system has no significant effect on prognosis and response to chemoradiotherapy in patients with non-metastatic NSCLC.
