Abstract
Breast cancer is the primary cause of cancer-related deaths in women, especially in developing nations where early detection and comorbidity management are challenging. Coagulopathy significantly enhance the disease severity, but its impact on Ethiopian patients is unclear. Therefore, this study aims to investigate and compare coagulation profiles in chemotherapy-experienced, chemotherapy-naive breast cancer patients, and healthy controls. An Institutional-based comparative cross-sectional study was conducted at the University of Gondar and Felege Hiwot Comprehensive Specialized Hospitals from 15 May 2023 to 30 August 2023 on a total of 180 participants. Participants socio-demographic and clinical data were collected using structured questionnaires in face-to-face interviews and medical record reviews. Blood sample for laboratory tests were taken, with 3 ml in ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, 3 ml in trisodium citrate, and 2 ml in serum separator tubes. Coagulation parameters were measured using Genrui coagulation analyser (CA51) and Sysmex KX-21 hematology analyser. Data entry was done using Epi Data version 4.6 and transform to SPSS version 25 for analysis then descriptive statistics was presenting with tables. One-way ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to compare coagulation parameters among the three study groups, considering normal and skewed data, respectively. The activated partial thromboplastin time in chemotherapy-experienced, chemotherapy-naïve patients, and healthy controls showed median ± IQR values of 34.3 ± 15.8, 35 ± 13.3, and 29.2 ± 5.9 s, respectively, indicating a significant difference (p: 0.016). Similarly, the prothrombin time in the same groups had median ± IQR values of 15 ± 3.9, 15.3 ± 2.9, and 13.2 ± 1.9 s, respectively, with a significant difference (p < 0.001). Platelet count mean ± SD in chemotherapy-experienced, chemotherapy-naïve patients, and healthy controls were 351.3 ± 99.6, 345.6 ± 117.5, and 284.3 ± 79.3, respectively, showing a significant difference (p < 0.001). The mean ± SD of mean platelet volume in the same groups were 10.4 ± 2.7, 9.5 ± 2.4, and 9 ± 1.2, respectively, with a significant difference (p: 0.003). Coagulation parameters of both chemotherapy-experienced and chemotherapy-naïve patients were abnormally prolonged compared to healthy controls. This event indicates in vivo coagulation and it may increase bleeding tendency in patients. Therefore, early laboratory investigation of the coagulation profiles of breast cancer patients is critical for early detection and intervention of the coagulopathy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have underscored the significance of hematocrit (HCT) in different tumors. However, further research is needed to explore its causal relationship with various tumors. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS A retrospective analysis and a Mendelian randomization analysis were conducted on a sample of 3,580,275 samples to investigate the causal relationships between high HCT levels and the risks of developing the 15 prevalent malignant tumors. Additionally, using an in-house cohort, Kaplan-Meier curves were utilized to examine the relationship between HCT levels and the prognosis of patients with prostate cancer (PCa). RESULTS An elevated HCT level was identified as a protective factor against six types of cancers, including PCa (odds ratio [OR] < 1.000, p < 0.05), and a risk factor for cervical cancer, melanoma, and non-melanoma skin cancer (OR > 1.000, p < 0.05). A potential causal association was found between high HCT levels and decreased risks of developing PCa (OR = 0.887, p < 0.05) and breast cancer (OR = 0.893, p < 0.05). HCT was identified as a protective factor against PCa (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS This study identified significant associations between HCT and nine tumors. HCT levels may serve as a protective factor against PCa.

Abstract
Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) may be indicative of breast cancer (BC); however, this remains inconclusive. With the aim to assess the current literature to evaluate the diagnostic roles of NLR PLR and LMR in BC, a systematic literature search was performed using the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Database, VIP database and China Biology Medicine disc databases up to August 29, 2023. The standardized mean deviation and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for each outcome was reported, and heterogeneity and publication bias were assessed. Overall, 39 studies were included in the present study. Pooled analysis with the random-effects model demonstrated that patients with BC had significantly higher NLR and PLR, and a lower LMR, compared with non-BC subjects. The pooled sensitivities of the NLR and PLR were 0.68 (95% CI, 0.59-0.75) and 0.55 (95% CI, 0.36-0.72), respectively, and the pooled specificities of the NLR and PLR were 0.75 (95% CI, 0.68-0.81) and 0.80 (95% CI, 0.51-0.94), respectively. However, the limited number of studies included hindered the evaluation of the diagnostic role of LMR. In summary, a higher NLR and PLR and lower LMR were associated with the presence of BC. NLR and PLR may be potential blood-based biomarkers for the differentiation of BC. Despite these findings, further studies are needed to validate their clinical applicability and practicality. Abstract
BACKGROUND The role of hemoglobin (HGB) in common malignant tumors remains unclear. METHODS A retrospective analysis was conducted to identify the correlation between HGB levels and risk of 15 malignant tumors using 50,085 samples from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Mendelian Randomization analyses (MRAs) were performed based on genome-wide association study data to assess the causal relationship between HGB levels and these malignant tumors using more than 700,000 samples. The robustness of the MRA results was confirmed through various analytical methods. Fifty-six in-house samples were used to investigate the correlation between HGB levels and the prognosis in prostate cancer (PRCA) using the Kaplan-Meier curve. RESULTS High HGB levels were associated with a higher risk for patients with cervix cancer, melanoma, and non-melanoma skin cancer (OR > 1.000, p < 0.05). It served as a protective factor for colon cancer, esophagus cancer, stomach cancer, bone cancer, lung cancer, renal cancer, and PRCA (OR < 1.000, p < 0.05). Furthermore, MRAs suggested that elevated HGB levels were correlated with a reduced risk of PRCA (OR = 0.869, p < 0.05), with no significant association observed between this marker and the remaining 14 malignant tumors. No pleiotropy or heterogeneity was found in the ultimate results for MRAs (p-values > 0.05), suggesting the robustness of the results. The results derived from the in-house data revealed a relationship between higher HGB values and a more favorable prognosis in PRCA (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION High circulating HGB levels may play a protective prognostic role for PRCA and serve as a protective factor against the occurrence of PRCA.

Abstract
PURPOSE Investigating the association between red cell distribution width (RDW) and all-cause mortality in patients with breast cancer, to evaluate the potential clinical prognostic value of RDW. METHODS Based on the RDW index, patients with breast cancer in the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC-IV) database were categorized into quartiles. The primary outcomes included in-hospital mortality from all causes during the first six months, the first year, and the first three years. Cox hazards regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) models were developed to investigate the effects of RDW on primary outcomes. RESULTS The study included 939 patients (female). The 6-month, 1-year, and 3-year mortality rates were 14.0%, 21.4%, and 28.4%, respectively. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards analyses demonstrated that RDW exhibited an autonomous association with an increased risk of all-cause mortality. After adjusting for confounders, higher RDW quartiles were significantly associated with 6-month mortality (adjusted hazard ratio (HR), 3.197; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.745-5.762; P < 0.001), 1-year mortality (adjusted HR, 2.978; 95% CI, 1.867-4.748; P < 0.001), and 3-year mortality (adjusted HR, 2.526; 95% CI, 1.701-3.750; P < 0.001). The RCS curves demonstrated that high RDW (> 14.6) was associated with a greater risk of all-cause mortality. Subgroup analyses revealed no statistically significant differences in the interactions between the subgroups. CONCLUSION The study revealed a highly pronounced relationship between RDW and overall mortality, indicating its potential as an autonomous prognostic factor for increased mortality among patients with breast cancer.

Abstract
To explore the analytical worth of prognostic nutritional index (PNI) and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in patients with cervical squamous cell carcinoma. The clinical data of 539 patients with cervical cancer in the Affiliated Tumor Hospital of Nantong University from December 2007 to October 2016 were analyzed retrospectively. The ROC is used to select the best cutoff values of PNI and NLR, which are 48.95 and 2.4046. Cox regression analysis was used for univariate and multivariate analysis. Survival differences were assessed by Kaplan-Meier (KM) survival method. Finally, a 3-layer artificial neural network (ANN) model is established. In cervical squamous cell carcinoma, the KM survival curve showed that the overall survival (OS) rate of high-level PNI group was significantly higher than that of low-level PNI group (P < .001), while the OS rate of low-level NLR group was significantly higher than that of high-level NLR group (P = .002). In non-squamous cell carcinoma, there was no significant difference in OS between the 2 groups (P > .005). According to Cox multivariate analysis, preliminary diagnosed PNI and NLR were independent prognostic factors of cervical squamous cell carcinoma (P < .001, P = .008), and pathological type and International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage also had a certain impact on tumor progression (P = .042, P = .048). The increase of PNI and the decrease of NLR will help patients with cervical squamous cell carcinoma live longer. ANN showed that PNI and NLR were of great importance in predicting survival. Preoperative PNI and NLR are independent predictors of cervical squamous cell carcinoma patients related to clinicopathological features, and have particular value in judging prognosis.

Abstract
Exploring the potential association between peripheral blood leukocyte counts and breast cancer risk by Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis methods. Genetic data related to peripheral blood sorting counts of leukocytes were collected from a genome-wide association study by Blood Cell Consortium (BCX). Single nucleotide polymorphic loci predicting peripheral blood sorting counts of these leukocytes were selected as instrumental variables according to the correlation assumption, independence assumption and exclusivity assumption of MR. The data on breast cancer and its subtypes were obtained from Breast Cancer Association Consortium (BCAC) and FinnGen Consortium. In this study, the Inverse-Variance Weighted (IVW), Weighted Median, MR-Egger, Maximum Likelihood (ML), MR-PRESSO and Constrained Maximum Likelihood and Model Averaging (cML-MA) methods of random effects models were used for MR analysis. Cochran's Q analysis, and MR-Egger intercept analysis were applied for sensitivity analysis. IVW and cML-MA were considered the primary analytical tools, and the results of the other 4 MRs were used as complementary and validation. The results suggest that there is no significant causal relationship between leukocyte count and breast cancer risk (IVW OR = 0.98 [95% CI: 0.93-1.03], p-value = 0.35; CML-MA OR = 1.01 [95% CI: 0.98-1.05], p-value = 0.51). In addition, we analyzed whether there was a potential correlation between the five main types of categorized leukocyte counts and different breast cancer subtypes. We did not find significant evidence to support a significant correlation between leukocyte counts and breast cancer subtypes.

Abstract
CONTEXT The role of platelet parameters as markers of inflammation in various diseases is now in limelight. The interaction between cancer cells and platelets is a well-established phenomenon. Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a premalignant disorder with a malignant transformation rate of 2-8%. This study aimed to evaluate platelet parameters in OSMF and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) in the background of OSMF. This cross-sectional study was performed using secondary data retrieved between January 2019 and December 2019 in the Department of Oral Pathology and the Hematology Laboratory. METHODS AND MATERIALS The data retrieved included 44 histopathologically proven OSCC in a background of OSMF (group III) and 36 OSMF (group II). The haematological parameters of these selected cases were retrieved from the Sysmex XN-1000 automated hematology analyser database. A control group (group I) comprises 50 subjects with normal (negative/unflagged) haematological parameters. All data were statistically analysed using SPSS 20.0. The significance level of tests was set at 5%. RESULTS The mean platelet volume (MPV) (9.60 [±0.95] P < 0.001), platelet distribution width (PDW) (10.45 [±1.9], P < 0.001), platelet large cell ratio (PLCR) (21.70 [±7.98], P < 0.001), and the ratio of mean platelet volume to total platelet count (MPV/PLT) (0.03 [0.01], P < 0.001) were lower in group III when compared to the other two groups. CONCLUSIONS Platelet parameters may be used as indices in the OSCC in the background of OSMF. However, large-scale prospective studies are necessary to evaluate the utility of these parameters during the malignant transformation of OSMF, thereby encouraging prompt treatment to prevent morbidity and mortality.

Abstract
Aim: This study was designed to investigate the prognostic value of the platelet volume index in patients with invasive breast cancer (IBC). Methods: A total of 524 patients with IBC were enrolled in this study, with a median follow-up time of 6.76 years. The relationship between platelet volume indices and breast cancer prognosis was analyzed. Results: There is a strong correlation between a higher platelet distribution width-to-platelet count ratio (PDW/P) and poorer disease-free survival (DFS) in patients with IBC. The DFS rate was significantly lower among individuals with elevated PDW/P ratios compared with those with lower ratios. Conclusion: The PDW/P ratio is an independent risk factor for predicting DFS in patients with IBC.

Abstract
Background: This study investigated and compared clinical serum biomarkers and developed a diagnostic nomogram for breast cancer. Methods: A total of 1224 breast cancer and 1280 healthy controls were enrolled. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify factors and a nomogram was developed. Discrimination, accuracy and clinical utility values were evaluated by receiver operating characteristic, Hosmer-Lemeshow, calibration plots, decision curve analysis and clinical impact plots. Results: carcinoembryonic antigen, CA125, CA153, lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, fibrinogen and platelet distributing width were effectively identified to predict breast cancer. The nomogram showed the area under the curve of 0.708 and 0.710 in the training and validation set. Calibration plots, Hosmer-Lemeshow, decision curve analysis and clinical impact plots confirmed great accuracy and clinical utility. Conclusion: We developed and validated a nomogram that is effectively used for risk prediction of Chinese breast cancer.

Abstract
Introduction Platelet indices changes in severely ill people and in dogs with inflammation are compatible findings. This study aimed to compare platelet indices between dogs with clinical benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and healthy controls. Additionally, to determine whether there is a correlation between the relative prostatic size (S rel) and the platelet indices in BPH dogs. Methods Thirty-five adult intact male dogs of different breeds were allocated to the experimental groups: dogs with clinical BPH (groups A; n = 24; median age of 6 years; the median weight of 8.50 kg) and healthy dogs (group B; n = 11; median age 5.50 years; the median weight of 7.00 kg) based on physical examination, clinical signs, and S rel detected by ultrasonographic findings. The individual prostatic volume (IPV) was divided by the expected prostatic volume (EPV) to determine the relative prostatic size in dogs over 4 years old. Platelet indices were compared between the two groups, and a correlation between S rel and these indices was calculated. Results The median S rel of dogs in group A was significantly higher (P = 0.001), and the mean plateletcrit (PCT) was significantly lower (P = 0.003) compared with those in group B. S rel showed a significant negative correlation with PLT and PCT (r = -0.388; P = 0.02 and r = -0.402; P = 0.01). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis showed PLT and PCT thresholds for estimating S rel > 1 with 75% and 87.5% sensitivity and 71.82 and 63.64% specificity. Discussion The findings of this study support the use of platelet indices like PLT and PCT to detect clinical BPH in dogs. However, more research is needed to confirm their utility in conjunction with other previously described diagnostic factors.

Abstract
Breast cancer represents a heterogeneous condition in which the interaction between host immune response and primary oncogenic events can impact disease progression. Ratios of systemic blood-based immunocytes have emerged as clinically-relevant prognostic biomarkers in cancer patients. The NLR (neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio) has been shown to be prognostic in a variety of cancers, including breast cancer. However, evaluation of the prognostic value for overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) of other key immunocyte ratios-neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), neutrophil-to-white cell count ratio (NWR), lymphocyte-to-white cell count ratio (LWR), monocyte-to-white cell count ratio (MWR), platelet-to-lymphocyte (PLR)-by breast cancer subtypes in a neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) cohort remains to be fully explored. An NAC-treated breast cancer cohort, comprised of Luminal A, Luminal B, HER2-positive, and triple negative/basal breast cancers, treated at a tertiary referral center (minimum 3-year follow-up), was used to calculate immunocyte ratios and immunocyte cut-off values, calculated with >80% specificity (using decision tree modeling). The association with subtype-specific OS, DFS, and tumor grade was analyzed using cut offs calculated using both receiver operating characteristic curves and decision tree modelling. Decision tree calculated ratios showed that LMR (5.29) and MWR (0.06) were significantly associated with Luminal A OS (p = 0.004 and p = 0.022) and DFS (p = 0.004 and p = 0.022), and Luminal B OS (p = 0.027 and p = 0.008) and DFS (p = 0.005 and p = 0.007). NLR (1.79) and LWR (0.30) were significantly associated with HER2-positive OS (p = 0.013 and p = 0.043). NLR (1.79) and NWR (0.62) were significantly associated with DFS (p = 0.035 and p = 0.021). No significant association we observed between any immunocyte ratio in the triple negative cohort. Our results demonstrate the subtype-specific prognostic value of immunocyte ratios in NAC-treated breast cancer patients. Further validation of immunocyte ratios will provide clinicians with a new prognostic aid for disease management and monitoring.

Abstract
Purpose Clinical responses of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) are associated with prognosis in patients with breast cancer. The selection of suitable variables for the prediction of clinical responses remains controversial. Herein, we developed a predictive model based on ultrasound imaging and clinical indices to identify patients most likely to benefit from NACT. Patients and Methods We recruited a total of 225 consecutive patients who underwent NACT followed by surgery and axillary lymph node dissection at the Sixth Hospital of Ning Bo City of Zhe Jiang Province between January 1, 2018, and March 31, 2021. All patients had been diagnosed with breast cancer following the clinical examination. First, we created a training cohort of patients who underwent NACT+surgery (N=180) to develop a nomogram. We then validated the performance of the nomogram in a validation cohort of patients who underwent NACT+ surgery (N=45). Multivariate logistic regression was then used to identify independent risk factors that were associated with the response to NACT; these were then incorporated into the nomogram. Results Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified several significant differences as to clinical responses of NACT, including neutrophil–lymphocyte ratio (NLR), body mass index (BMI), pulsatility index (PI), resistance index (RI), blood flow, Ki67, histological type, molecular subtyping, and tumor size. The performance of the nomogram score exhibited a robust C-index of 0.89 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.83 to 0.95) in the training cohort and a high C-index of 0.87 (95% CI: 0.81 to 0.93) in the validation cohort. Clinical impact curves showed that the nomogram had a good predictive ability. Conclusion We successfully established an accurate and optimized nomogram incorporated ultrasound imaging and clinical indices that could be used preoperatively to predict clinical responses of NACT. This model can be used to evaluate the risk of clinical responses to NACT and therefore facilitate the choice of personalized therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancer development is among other factors driven by tumor immune escape and tumor-mediated changes in the immune response. Investigating systemic immune changes may provide important knowledge for the improvement of patient prognosis and treatment opportunities. METHODS The systemic immune profile of patients with ER-positive breast cancer (n = 22) and healthy controls (n = 30) was investigated based on complete blood counts, flow cytometric analysis of T cell subsets including regulatory T cells (Tregs), and immune assays investigating soluble (s)HLA-G and the cytokine profile in plasma. We further examined the correlation between the immune markers and clinical parameters including tumor size, tumor grade and lymph node involvement. RESULTS Results indicated that breast cancer patients possessed a higher amount of neutrophils and monocytes and fewer lymphocytes and eosinophils compared with healthy controls. Breast cancer patients had significantly more CD25+CD127low Tregs than controls, and both lymphocyte and Treg numbers were negatively correlated with tumor size. Furthermore, Treg numbers were elevated in grade I tumors compared with grade II tumors and with healthy controls. No difference in sHLA-G levels was observed between patients and controls. Higher levels of IL-6 and TNF-α were observed in breast cancer patients. Cytokine and sHLA-G levels were not associated with clinical parameters. CONCLUSION The results of this exploratory study contribute to the elucidation of the systemic immune response in breast cancer indicating a potential use of peripheral immune cell counts and Tregs to distinguish patients from healthy controls and as potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers to be investigated in future studies.

Abstract
Background: The objective of this study was to assess the prognostic value of pretreatment platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and lymphocyte-to-white blood cell ratio (LWR) of CRC patients who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Methods: We analyzed the peripheral blood routine parameters and other clinical data of 145 patients with colorectal cancer who had undergone neoadjuvant chemotherapy between January 2011 and February 2014. Pretreatment blood parameters of 145 patients were collected, and PLR, NLR, and LWR were calculated. The utility of PLR, NLR, and LWR in predicting treatment efficacy and patient survival was statistically evaluated using the chi-square test, log-rank test, Kaplan-Meier curves and logistic regression models, and Cox regression models. Results: Receiver operating characteristic curve showed that the best cutoff values of PLR, NLR, and LWR were 154.31, 3.01, and 0.22, respectively. In univariate analysis, tumor location (P = 0.044), differentiation degree (P = 0.001), lymph node metastasis (P = 0.020), and high PLR (P = 0.042) were significantly correlated with a lower overall response rate (ORR). In addition, clinical stage, lymph node metastasis, and high PLR were correlated with short OS (P < 0.01) and DFS (P < 0.01). Moreover, WBC count was correlated with a short OS. Multivariate analysis showed that tumor location (P = 0.013), differentiation degree (P = 0.001), and lymph node metastasis (P = 0.033) were independent predictors of ORR. In addition, lymph node metastasis independently predicted a shorter OS (P = 0.011). Lymph node metastasis (P = 0.013) and high PLR (P = 0.022) were independent prognostic factors for short DFS. Conclusions: For CRC patients who received NAC, clinical pathological stage and lymph node metastasis were correlated with lower ORR and survival, while a high PLR that may be of prognostic relevance in CRC patients receiving NAC.

Abstract
Purpose Among patients with breast cancer, pathological complete response (pCR) to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) is an important prognostic predictor of survival. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) along with overall pCR. Method A total of 150 patients with breast cancer who were first administered NAC and then operated on were retrospectively evaluated. Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and PLR obtained from the complete blood count analysis performed immediately before NAC treatment were analyzed. The cut-off value was calculated as 150 for PLR and 2.24 for NLR. We studied the predictive value of NLR and PLR levels for the pathologic response of breast cancer to NAC. Results Pathological complete response was observed in 34.7% (n = 52) of the patients, pCR in the breast in 42.7% (n = 64), and that in the axilla in 44% (n = 66). There was a statistically significant difference between the pCR rates according to the PLR levels (p = 0.013). In addition, a statistically significant difference was found in the pCR rates in the breast and axilla according to PLR levels (p = 0.018, p = 0.009). Patients with low PLR in the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER-2) group had significantly higher axillary pCR rates than in those with high PLR (p = 0.019). Conclusions A low PLR level showed high chemotherapy sensitivity independent of molecular subtypes in the treatment of breast cancer with NAC. The PLR level can serve as a predictive marker of the therapeutic effect of NAC on the breast and axilla. Low PLR levels in HER-2 enriched groups can predict pCR in the axilla.

Abstract
Neutrophils and lymphocytes are key regulators of breast cancer (BC) development and progression. Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) values have been found to offer clear prognostic utility when evaluating BC patients. In this study, we sought to determine whether BC patient baseline NLR values are correlated with pathological complete response (pCR) following neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NCT) treatment. In total, 346 BC patients underwent NCT at our hospital from January 1, 2014 to October 31, 2019, and data pertaining to these patients were retrospectively analyzed. Correlations between clinicopathological characteristics and pCR rates were assessed via multivariate logistic regression analyses. A predictive scoring model was used to gauge the likelihood of pCR based upon regression coefficient (β) values for each significant variable identified through these analyses. NLR cut-off values suitable for identifying patients likely to achieve pCR following NCT treatment were calculated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. All patients in the present study were females with a median age of 48 years old (range 22–77). An optimal NLR cut-off value of 1.695 was identified and was associated with respective sensitivity and specificity values of 63.6% and 45.5%. We found that higher NLR values were significantly associated with younger age, premenopausal status, and non-pCR status. Logistic regression analyses indicated that NLR, tumor size, hormone receptor (HR) status, and Ki-67 expression were all independent predictors of pCR. The area under the curve (AUC) for the resultant predictive scoring model was 0.705, and this model was assessed via K-fold cross-validation (k = 10) and bootstrapping validation, yielding respective AUC values of 0.68 and 0.694. Moreover, the incorporation of NLR into this predictive model incrementally improved its overall prognostic value relative to that of a model not incorporating NLR (AUC = 0.674). BC patients with a lower baseline NLR are more likely to exhibit pCR following NCT treatment, indicating that NLR may be a valuable biomarker for BC patient prognostic evaluation and treatment planning. Overall, our results demonstrate that this NLR-based predictive model can efficiently predict NCT efficacy in early BC patients with a high degree of accuracy.

Abstract
Multiple studies have found the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) to be associated with adverse breast cancer (BC) prognosis and survival. Very limited data exist on the role of NLR and risk of BC. The BREOGAN study is a population-based case-control study conducted in Galicia, Spain. We examined the WBC- and NLR-BC relationships. The risk of BC increased with increasing levels of neutrophils percentage (NE%) (multivariable OR for the highest category (95% CI) = 2.14 (1.39-3.32), P-trend < 0.001) and of the NLR (multivariable OR for the highest category (95% CI) = 1.93 (1.26-2.97), P-trend < 0.001). Lymphocytes absolute (L#) and percentage (L%) were associated with a decreased risk of BC (multivariable OR for the highest category (95% CI) = 0.54 (0.35-0.83), and 0.51 (0.33-0.79), P-trend = 0.001 and < 0.001, respectively). The NLR-BC association was more pronounced among Luminal A BC (multivariable OR for the highest category (95% CI) = 2.00 (1.17-3.45), P-trend < 0.001), HER2-negative BC (multivariable OR for the highest category (95% CI) = 1.87 (1.16-3.02), P-trend < 0.001), and those with high total cholesterol and low H2O2 levels.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Gall bladder cancer (GBC) tends to present in advanced stages, therefore, early diagnosis of GBC is necessary. There is no ideal single tumor marker available presently for the diagnosis and prognosis of GBC. Platelet distribution width (PDW) is an early marker for activated platelets and has been used in a variety of tumors to assess prognosis. This study was designed to evaluate the utility of PDW in identifying GBC patients and its association with tumor markers, staging and resectability of GBC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross sectional study was done on 100 patients of GBC and 100 age- and sex- matched healthy controls. PDW was evaluated and compared between GBC and healthy controls. Receiver-operating characteristics was plotted to determine optimal cut-off for identifying GBC patients and to determine sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) of PDW. Correlation between serum tumor markers (carbohydrate antigen 19-9, carcinoembryonic antigen, and carbohydrate antigen 125) and PDW were evaluated. Association of PDW with hyperbilirubinemia, staging and resectability of GBC was also studied. RESULTS: A significantly higher PDW with a median of 18.1 was observed in GBC as compared to healthy controls with median value of 13. PDW was found to have a very high sensitivity (90%), specificity (95%), PPV (94%) and NPV (90%) in identifying GBC at cut-off of 16 with area under the curve (AUC) of 0.97. An increase of PDW was observed with increasing stage and unresectable GBC. However, it was not statistically significant. Significant positive correlation was observed between PDW and all three serum tumor markers and good positive correlation with r = 0.61 was observed with CA 19-9. CONCLUSION: PDW was associated with GBC and may be considered as a cost- effective marker in adjunct to other investigations for the diagnosis of GBC.

Abstract
Background: Cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer mortality in women, which seriously threatens the health of women worldwide. Platelet (PLT)-related parameters, including PLT count, mean platelet volume (MPV), plateletcrit (PCT), and platelet distribution width (PDW), are correlated with tumor prognosis. Methods: In total, 110 patients with cervical carcinoma were recruited in this study. The patients were divided into 2 groups according to the receiver operating characteristic analysis cutoff values of PLT, MPV, PCT, or PDW. The post-/preradiotherapy ratios were defined as the rate of preradiotherapy PLT-related parameters counts and the corresponding ones obtained after radiotherapy. Results: Higher pretreatment PLT level was correlated with Higher Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage (II). Higher pretreatment PLT level was correlated with worse progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Increased post-/preradiotherapy ratio of PLT was correlated with worse PFS and OS. Changes in PCT, MPV, or PDW levels had no effects on PFS or OS. Cox regression analysis model indicated that larger tumor size, higher pretreatment PLT level, and increased post-/preradiotherapy PLT ratio were independently associated with worse PFS; higher FIGO stage (II) and increased post-/preradiotherapy PLT ratio were independently associated with worse OS. Conclusion: Pretreatment PLT level and increased post-/preradiotherapy PLT ratio are correlated with outcomes of cervical cancer.

Abstract
Background Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the female population. Platelet-related indicators can be used as prognostic markers of cancers. The present study investigated the potential values of platelet count (PLT), plateletcrit (PCT), mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in the prognosis of advanced breast cancer (ABC). Methods This retrospective study recruited 94 locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer cases who had histologic and cytologic evidence. The patients were divided into two groups according to the median baseline values of PLT, PCT, MPV, PDW, and PLR. To evaluate the individual value changes after treatment, we introduced the concept of post/pre-treatment ratio (≤1 indicated value was not increased after treatment, while >1 suggested increased value). Responses to chemotherapy, including partial response (PR), stable disease (SD), and progressive disease (PD), were recorded. Kaplan-Meier curves were constructed to show overall survival (OS). Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analysis models were employed to identify the independent risk factors Results A lower baseline PCT level was correlated with a better OS. A lower baseline PLT level and a higher baseline PDW level were related to better chemotherapeutic efficacy of breast cancer patients. Univariate analysis and multivariate analysis both revealed that a higher baseline PCT level was an independent prognostic factor for OS. Conclusions PCT level may be a potential prognosis factor for ABC.

Abstract
Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive subtype with limited therapeutic options. New opportunities are emerging from current comprehensive characterization of tumor immune infiltration and fitness. Therefore, effectiveness of current chemotherapies and novel immunotherapies are partially dictated by host inflammatory and immune profiles. However, further progress in breast cancer immuno-oncology is required to reach a detailed awareness of the immune infiltrate landscape and to determine additional reliable and easily detectable biomarkers. In this study, by analyzing gene expression profiles of 54 TNBC cases we identified three TNBC clusters displaying unique immune features. Deep molecular characterization of immune cells cytolytic-activity and tumor-inflammation status reveled variability in the local composition of the immune infiltrate in the TNBC clusters, reconciled by tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes counts. Platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), a blood systemic parameter of inflammation evaluated using pre-surgical blood test data, resulted negatively correlated with local tumoral cytolytic activity and T cell–inflamed microenvironment, whereas tumor aggressiveness score signature positively correlated with PLR values. These data highlighted that systemic inflammation parameters may represent reliable and informative markers of the local immune tumor microenvironment in TNBC patients and could be exploited to decipher tumor infiltrate properties and consequently to select the most appropriate therapies.

Abstract
The development of new approaches to breast cancer (BC) early diagnosis is an important objective of modern oncology. Although the role of the immune system in cancer initiation process was experimentally well established, the prognostic value of cellular blood immunological parameters (CBIPs) for BC onset prediction was not demonstrated either in clinics or in mouse models. In this study, we focused on revealing informative CBIPs for mammary cancer (MC) onset prediction in the BLRB/BYRB mouse model with a high incidence of natural MC development. Blood samples were collected from 80 aging females of these original mouse strains, 12 basic CBIPs were estimated by flow cytometry. Then mice were followed up for 28 weeks, and the outcome of females (MC diagnosis, death without MC or MC-free survival) was registered. We estimated the patterns of changes in CBIPs with age and in accordance with the outcome. An increasing imbalance in 11 CBIPs during natural aging of females clearly resembled human immunosenescence phenomenon and several patterns corresponded to the results obtained on cancer-free members of BC-affected families. We stratified heterogeneous female population into middle-aged and old subgroups. Low NK-cell levels in middle-aged mice and low B-cell along with high T-helper levels in old mice distinguished females with developed MC from the other groups. We found a reliable correlation of several CBIPs with age at MC diagnosis and survival of cancer-bearing females. Thus, we demonstrated the predictive potential of CBIPs as a basis for the development of prognostic models for BC onset in clinics.

Abstract
Breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease that among Korean women has a peak incidence in the perimenopausal period. The full epidemiological characteristics of breast cancer in Korean women are not yet properly understood. We investigated whether white blood cell (WBC) is related to breast cancer burden according to estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) status in the context of body mass index and menopausal status. We conducted a large case-control study and compared WBC counts between patients with breast cancer (N = 4,402) and propensity score-matched controls (N = 4,402) selected from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). We stratified the study sample by ER/PR status, menopausal status, and body mass index and assessed the association between WBC count and breast cancer burden using multinomial logistic regression. Compared with controls, non-obese patients with ER+/PR+ breast cancer had significantly higher WBC counts regardless of menopausal status (OR 1.293 95% CI 1.139–1.363, p < 0.001 in premenopausal and OR 1.049 95% CI 1.019–1.295, p = 0.023 in postmenopausal). There was no relationship between WBC count and ER+/PR+ breast cancer among premenopausal obese women. Furthermore, premenopausal non-obese women and postmenopausal obese women with ER+/PR+ breast cancer had higher WBC counts than those with ER−/PR− breast cancer. Further larger-scale prospective cohort studies are warranted to determine these associations in the future.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Breast cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers, and the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths in females worldwide. Activated platelets play a key role in tumor growth and tumor metastasis. Platelet distribution width (PDW) is a platelet index, and is altered in patients with malignancies. The aim of this study was to explore whether PDW can effectively predict death outcome of breast cancer patients. STUDY DESIGN The clinical data of 271 breast cancer patients in our hospital between January 2009 and December 2009 were retrospectively analyzed. Survival analysis was performed using the log-rank test and Cox proportional hazards regression analysis. RESULT There were significant correlations between increased PDW and tumor size, molecular subtype, differentiation grade, and cancer stages (T, N, or TNM). Moreover, survival analysis revealed that the overall survival of patients with PDW > 16.8%, which was significantly shorter than those with PDW ⩽ 16.8%. Multivariate analysis indicated that PDW > 16.8% predicts a poor overall survival of breast cancer patients. CONCLUSIONS Elevated PDW may serve as a marker of adverse prognosis in breast cancer. However, these data are preliminary and should be interpreted with caution pending validation by additional clinical and molecular/genomics studies in various populations.

Abstract
Response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy in breast cancer patients is of prognostic value in determining short- and mid-term outcomes. Inflammatory biomarkers, such as platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), have been proposed as predictive factors of response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Currently, there are no studies in Colombian patients reporting the role of inflammatory biomarkers as response predictors in patients receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Therefore, in this study we performed a cross-sectional study and analyzed the association between inflammatory biomarkers and pCR (pathological complete response) in patients diagnosed with breast cancer–of different molecular subtypes- and treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy. A total of 288 patients were included in the study, with a median age of 51 years old. Disease was locally advanced in 83% of the participants, and 77.7% had compromised lymph nodes. In our cohort, the most frequent tumor molecular subtype was luminal B/Her2- (27.8%) followed by triple negative [TN] (21.5%), luminal B/Her2+ (19.8%), Her2-enriched (16%) and luminal A (13.5%). PLR was not associated with age, menopausal status, baseline tumor size, histologic grade, axillary lymph node involvement, disease stage, estrogen receptor status, or Ki67; however, complete pathological response was significantly higher in the low PLR group (PLR<150) compared with the high PLR group (35.1% Vs. 22.2%, p = 0.03). In addition, Her2-enriched tumors achieved the highest pCR rates (65%), followed by TN (34%) tumors. Our results suggest that breast cancer patients with low platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR <150), treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy achieve higher complete pathological response, independently of primary tumor molecular subtype.

Abstract
The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a biomarker that indicates systemic inflammation and can be estimated using array-based DNA methylation data as methylation-derived NLR (mdNLR). We assessed the relationship between prediagnosis mdNLR and lung cancer risk in a nested case-control study in the β-Carotene and Retinol Efficacy Trial (CARET) of individuals at high risk for lung cancer due to heavy smoking or substantial occupational asbestos exposure. We matched 319 incident lung cancer cases to controls based on age at blood draw, smoking, sex, race, asbestos, enrollment year, and time at risk. We computed mdNLR using the ratio of predicted granulocyte and lymphocyte proportions derived from DNA methylation signatures in whole blood collected prior to diagnosis (median 4.4 years in cases). Mean mdNLR was higher in cases than controls (2.06 vs. 1.86, P = 0.03). Conditional logistic regression models adjusted for potential confounders revealed a 21% increased risk of lung cancer per unit increase in mdNLR [OR 1.21; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.01-1.45]. A 30% increased risk of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) was observed for each unit increase in mdNLR (n = 240 pairs; OR 1.30, 95% CI, 1.03-1.63), and there was no statistically significant association between mdNLR and small-cell lung cancer risk. The mdNLR-NSCLC association was most pronounced in those with asbestos exposure (n = 42 male pairs; OR 3.39; 95% CI, 1.32-8.67). Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between platelet distribution width (PDW) and cancer has been evaluated by a few studies, but the influence of PDW on cancer prognosis is unclear. Therefore, we conducted the present meta-analysis. MATERIAL AND METHODS We identified relevant research using identical search strategies. The influence of PDW level on cancer prognosis, as well as clinical characteristics, was analyzed. RESULTS A total of 11 studies comprising 2625 cancer patients were included in our meta-analysis. The results suggested that high PDW level was obviously related to poor OS (HR=1.54, 95%CI 1.18-2.00), especially for breast cancer (HR=1.21, 95%CI 1.07-1.36) and pharyngolaryngeal cancer (HR=3.06, 95%CI 1.68-5.57). Furthermore, high PDW was obviously related to poor OS both in older and younger subgroups, with combined HR estimates of 1.58 (95%CI 1.15-2.16) and 1.64 (95%CI 1.19-2.26), respectively. High PDW level was notably related to poor OS in the cut-off value ³16% subgroup (HR=1.84, 95%CI 1.01-3.40). Moreover, high PDW level was obviously associated with lymph node metastasis (OR=1.43, 95%CI 1.04-1.99). CONCLUSIONS The findings of this study suggest that PDW is an effective and convenient indicator of cancer prognosis. Furthermore, high PDW level is obviously associated with lymph node metastasis.

Abstract
Breast cancer (BC), obesity, and metabolic syndrome (MetS) shared a common mechanism of dysregulated metabolism and inflammatory response in disease initiation. Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is associated with adverse survival of BC patients. The aim of this study is to identify risk effect between NLR and BC in Chinese population with or without obesity and MetS. BC and age-matched breast benign disease (BBD) patients were retrospectively analyzed from Comprehensive Breast Health Center, Shanghai Ruijin Hospital. MetS was defined using AHA/NHLBI criteria. Individuals were classified into very low (0-1.30), low (1.31-1.67), intermediate (1.68-2.20), and high (>2.20) NLR subsets by each NLR quartile. In all, 1540 BC and 1540 BBD patients were included. Univariate and multivariate analysis found that NLR (OR: 1.27, 95% CI: 1.16-1.39, P < .001) and obesity (OR: 1.19, 95% CI: 1.00-1.42, P = .046) but not MetS (P = .060) were significantly associated with increased BC risk. Intermediate or high NLR substantially increased BC risk compared to very low NLR group (OR: 1.57, 95% CI: 1.29-1.92, P < .001; OR: 1.84, 95% CI: 1.50-2.25, P < .001; respectively) in whole population. Subgroup analysis found that the impact of higher NLR on BC risk was more obvious in patients without obesity (intermediate NLR, OR: 1.72, 95% CI: 1.37-2.16, P < .001; high NLR, OR: 1.92, 95% CI: 1.53-2.41, P < .001) or without MetS (intermediate NLR, OR: 1.70, 95% CI: 1.35-2.14, P < .001; high NLR, OR: 1.98, 95% CI: 1.57-2.51, P < .001). Higher preoperative NLR was found in BC patients compared with BBD patients. Intermediate to high NLR level substantially increased BC risk, which was more relevant for those without obesity or MetS.

Abstract
Gallbladder cancer (GBC) represents the most common biliary tract malignancy. Activated platelets play an essential
role in cancer development and progression. Mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW) are
commonly used indexes of activated platelets in clinical practice. The aim of the current study was to investigate the
association of MPV and PDW with GBC. 104 GBC patients and 109 normal control subjects were entered in this
study between January 2015 and December 2015. We collected all participants’ clinical and laboratory characteristics
at initial diagnosis. The odds ratios (ORs) for GBC were calculated using multivariate logistic regression analysis after
adjusting for confounding variables across MPV and PDW quartiles. MPV levels were markedly lower and PDW levels
were remarkably higher in GBC patients than control subjects. A significant correlation between PDW and lymph node
metastasis was detected. In addition, after adjusting for other risk factors, the ORs (95% CIs) for GBC in each MPV
quartile were 5.117 (1.939-13.506), 2.444 (0.917-6.516), 3.718 (1.381-10.007), and 1.000, respectively. The ORs (95%
CIs) for GBC in each PDW quartile were 1.000, 2.063 (0.825-5.162), 3.070 (1.108-8.507), and 12.108 (4.243-34.553),
respectively. In conclusion, decreased MPV and elevated PDW were independently associated with GBC. Our findings
suggest that MPV and PDW are available parameters for early detection of GBC.

Abstract
Background Increasing attention is focused on the relationship of inflammation biomarkers with malignant tumors. The purpose of the present study was to detect whether the preoperative the red distribution width (RDW) and the platelet distribution width (PDW) can be used to distinguish patients with gastric cancer (GC) or early stage GC from the healthy controls and predict the progression and prognosis of the GC. Methods The RDW and PDW values of 227 patients with GC and 164 patients with early GC were retrospectively analyzed comparing with 101 healthy controls. In addition, the clinicopathological features, survival curves and prognosis of the patients with GC were compared between the high and low groups according to the RDW and PDW values. Results Significant higher RDW and lower PDW were detected in patients with GC and early GC compared to the healthy controls. A higher RDW was significantly associated with older age, a larger tumor diameter, deeper tumor infiltration, and lymph node metastasis while a lower PDW was significantly associated with male, older age, a larger tumor diameter, deeper tumor infiltration, elevated CEA and CA125. Increased RDW was significantly associated with worse overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) for GC (P = 0.042 and P = 0.033, respectively) and early GC (P = 0.037 and P = 0.009, respectively) while decreased PDW indicated a significantly association with poor DFS for early GC (P = 0.006). Univariate and multivariate survival analysis showed that RDW and PDW can act as independent prognostic factors for DFS (P = 0.028 and P = 0.020) in patients with early GC. Conclusion The preoperative RDW and PDW were simple and convenient predictive factors for the progression and prognosis of patients with GC.

Abstract
This study aimes to evaluate platelet and leucocyte indicators, such as the mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width, plateletcrit, white blood cell count, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio in nasopharyngeal cancer patients and also to evaluate the relationship between these indicators and nasopharyngeal cancer with distant metastasis. The medical records of 118 patients diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer in our hospital between January 2006 and August 2015 were reviewed. The nasopharyngeal cancer group was further sub grouped according to the presence or absence of distant metastasis and TNM (tumour - T, node - N, metastasis - M) classification. A control group consisted of 120 healthy patients. The platelet and leucocyte values at the time of the initial diagnosis were recorded. Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and platelet distribution width values were significantly higher in the nasopharyngeal cancer group. But only platelet distribution width values were significantly higher in the nasopharyngeal cancer group with distant metastasis compared to the nasopharyngeal cancer group without distant metastasis. Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and platelet distribution width values may increase in nasopharyngeal cancer. But only the platelet distribution width values may give us an idea about the distant metastasis in nasopharyngeal cancer.

Abstract
Breast cancer is one of the leading malignant tumors that endanger women's health worldwide. Despite the rapid progress on the therapies, including chemotherapy, surgical resection, and other auxiliary methods, there were still numerous people died of breast cancer, which promoted the researchers to concentrate on the prognostic factor of breast cancer. In recent years, an increasing number of studies have been focused on the prognostic value of pretreatment neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio in breast cancer. This article is a brief review of the associations between neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and the prognosis of breast cancer patients, which may give a greater insight into the development of breast cancer and enable clinicians to cure it completely.

Abstract
Platelets play a multifaceted role in cancer progression and metastasis. Mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW) are commonly used platelet parameters from routine blood test. The aim of the present study was to investigate the correlation between platelet indices and prognosis in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). A total of 270 patients who were diagnosed with NSCLC between January 2009 and December 2009 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients’ characteristics and hematologic tests data at initial diagnosis were collected. The overall survival rate was estimated using Kaplan-Meier method. The prognostic analysis was carried out with univariate and multivariate Cox regressions model. Reduced PDW was significantly correlated with T stage, N stage, TNM stage, and histological type of the disease. Moreover, survival analysis showed that the overall survival of patients with PDW ≥ 16.3% was significantly longer than that of those with PDW < 16.3% (P < 0.001). In multivariate Cox regression model, age, sex, TNM stage, and PDW were identified as independent prognostic factors for overall survival (for PDW, P < 0.001). In conclusion, reduced PDW is an unfavorable predictive factor of NSCLC patient survival. Further studies are warranted.

Abstract
Platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) is a hematological parameter which is investigated as a biomarker for prognosis in patients with breast cancer. Due to the controversial results from previous studies, we performed a meta-analysis. Databases of PubMed, Embase and Web of Science were searched to identify eligible studies. STATA version 12.0 was used for statistical analysis. Seven studies with 3,741 patients were ultimately included in this meta-analysis. High PLR was associated with poor overall survival (OS) (HR = 1.55, 95% CI = 1.07-2.25, p = 0.022) and disease-free survival (DFS) (HR = 1.73, 95% CI = 1.3-2.3, p < 0.001) in breast cancer patients. Subgroup analyses disclosed that elevated PLR could predict worse OS in Asian populations and poor DFS in both Asian and non-Asian patients. In addition, PLR remains a significant prognostic marker for OS in patients receiving systemic treatment (HR = 1.78, 95% CI = 1.06-2.99, p = 0.03) and patients receiving chemotherapy (HR = 2.82, 95% CI = 1.09-7.26, p = 0.032). High PLR also indicates poor DFS in patients who receive chemotherapy (HR = 2.6, 95% CI = 1.47-4.61, p = 0.001), surgery (HR = 1.8, 95% CI = 1.12-2.89, p = 0.016) and systemic treatment (HR = 2.03, 95% CI = 1.03-4.01, p = 0.042). Moreover, PLR was also in association with HER-2 positivity (OR = 1.48, 95% CI = 1.2-1.83, p < 0.001). In conclusion, this meta-analysis revealed that PLR could serve as an indicator of poor prognosis in patients with breast cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In this study, we aimed to determine platelet indices such as platelet count (PLT), mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), Plateletcrit (PCT) platelet count (PLT) in lung cancer cases, and evaluate any relationships between these parameters and stage or histologic types. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study covered 44 lung cancer patients and 47 healthy subjects. Platelet indices including PLT, PCT, MPV, PDW were estimated and compared with normal subjects. The results were evaluated statistically. RESULTS The PDW value was significantly higher in the cancer group compared to the control group; however, the values for PCT and MPV were lower. CONCLUSIONS We suggest potential use of platelet indices in diagnosis of lung cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Determination of the hematological indices is a useful prognostic laboratory investigation in the cancer research. The neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (LNR), red cell distribution width (RDW) and the platelet distribution width (PDW) are useful markers for the prediction and the prognosis of breast cancer. The aims of this study were to assess the hematological indices in breast cancer women survivals and to show if there were significant differences in these indices between pre- and postmenopausal women. METHODS This observational study was carried out in the Nanakali Hospital in Erbil, Kurdistan region, Iraq. A total number of 120 women with breast cancer under different modalities of management were enrolled in this study. The patients were grouped into premenopausal (group I, n = 30) and postmenopausal (group II, n = 90) women and the hematological indices of all patients were determined. RESULTS Significant low hemoglobin levels and red cell counts were observed among group II compared with group I patients. Group II women had significant high values of RDW and mean platelet volume (MPV) (16.68 ± 2.51 and 9.980 ± 1.271) compared with group I (15.12 ± 2.27 and 9.535 ± 1.082). There were insignificant differences between group I and group II regarding the values of the PWD, plateletcrit (PCT), NLR and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR). CONCLUSIONS We conclude that the low hemoglobin levels, and the high RDW and PDW are significantly existing in postmenopausal compared with premenopausal survival women, indicating that there are specific hematological indices associated with the postmenopausal survival of the breast cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The red cell distribution width (RDW) has also been reported to reliably reflect the inflammation and nutrition status and predict the prognosis across several types of cancer, however, the prognostic value of RDW in esophageal carcinoma has seldom been studied. METHODS A retrospective study was performed to assess the prognostic value of RDW in patients with esophageal carcinoma by the Kaplan-Meier analysis and multivariate Cox regression proportional hazard model. All enrolled patients were divided into high RDW group (≧15%) and low RDW group (<15%) according to the detected RDW values. RESULTS Clinical and laboratory data from a total of 179 patients with esophageal carcinoma were retrieved. With a median follow-up of 21months, the high RDW group exhibited a shorter disease-free survival (DFS) (p<0.001) and an unfavorable overall survival (OS) (p<0.001) in the univariate analysis. The multivariate analysis revealed that elevated RDW at diagnosis was an independent prognostic factor for shorter PFS (p=0.043, HR=1.907, 95% CI=1.020-3.565) and poor OS (p=0.042, HR=1.895, 95% CI=1.023-3.508) after adjustment with other cancer-related prognostic factors. CONCLUSION The present study suggests that elevated preoperative RDW(≧15%) at the diagnosis may independently predict poorer disease-free and overall survival among patients with esophageal carcinoma.
