Abstract
INTRODUCTION With the advent of new tobacco products, poly-tobacco use among adolescents is increasing. Smoking among adolescents negatively impacts both their physical and mental health. This study aimed to determine poly-tobacco use among adolescents in South Korea and to identify the mental health problems caused by single-, dual-, and poly-tobacco use. METHODS Data from 54948 adolescents in the 2020 Korea Youth Behavior Web-based Survey were included. Mental health variables of our primary outcome were loneliness, anxiety, and depression. Descriptive statistics, Rao-Scott χ2 test and complex sample multivariable logistic regression analysis were conducted to determine the association between the type of tobacco product use and mental health. RESULTS Among the subjects, 95.2% were non-tobacco users, followed by single (3.0%), dual (1.1%), and poly users (0.7%). The subjects with poly-tobacco use had significantly higher rates of loneliness (33.2%, p<0.001), anxiety (22.3%, p<0.001), and depression (49.9%, p<0.001) than those who used fewer tobacco products. Subjects who used poly-tobacco products were 2.13 (95% CI: 1.61-2.83) times more likely to report loneliness, 1.52 (95% CI: 1.12-2.07) times more likely to report anxiety, and 2.18 (95% CI: 1.68-2.82) times more likely to report depression than non-tobacco users. CONCLUSIONS Among adolescents, poly-tobacco use is associated with symptoms of loneliness, depression, and anxiety, which are internalized mental health problems. Poly-tobacco use warrants early assessment of high-risk groups, education on the need for tobacco-use cessation, and active intervention for the psychological difficulties that these high-risk groups experience.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Emerging evidence points to tobacco experimentation being associated with a vast array of mental disorders, particularly anxiety and depression. We aimed to assess the prevalence of tobacco experimentation, its predictive factors and its potential links with anxiety and depressive disorders among in school adolescents in a Tunisian delegation. METHODS We carried out a cross sectional study among adolescents schooling in middle and high schools in the delegation of Nfidha, Sousse, Tunisia, during the period from January to March of the 2019-2020 school year using an anonymous questionnaire self-administered to a representative sample of 1,353 randomly selected pupils. Data were collected using the Arabic versions of the Beck Depression Inventory short form (13 items) and the Screen for Child Anxiety Related Disorders (SCARED-C) and a socio-demographic questionnaire with reference to the literature. RESULTS Tobacco was experimented by (17.5 %; CI 95 %: 14.8-18.8 %) of pupils. Almost three out of four pupils (73.2 %; CI 95 %: 70.8-75.6 %) reported experiencing depressive symptoms and (65 %; CI 95 %: 62.5-67.5 %) anxiety symptoms. Pupils who exhibited depressive disorder indicators were significantly more prone to experiment with tobacco (20.2 vs. 9.9 %, p<0.001; crude OR=2.301 CI 95 %: 1.74-3.58). Similarly, the prevalence of tobacco experimentation was found to be higher among pupils who reported having experienced anxiety disorders (21.0 vs. 14.5 %, p<0.001; crude OR=1.56 CI 95 %: 1.06-2.27). Being a male pupil (AOR=5.48 95 % CI: 3.62-8.31), being be enrolled in a high school (AOR=2.86, 95 % CI: 1.92-4.26), tobacco use by father and siblings (respectively AOR=1.76, 95 % CI: 1.19-2.60; AOR=2.47, 95 % CI: 1.52-4.02) and experiencing depressive disorders (AOR=2.69, 95 % CI: 1.60-4.53) were the determinants of tobacco experimentation in the multivariate analysis. CONCLUSIONS Tobacco experimentation in adolescence has been shown to be significantly associated with anxiety and depression. National smoking prevention strategies should be reinforced with a focus on mental health disorders.

Abstract
Anxiety and depression are common psychological disorders in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), which was upsurging worldwide amid the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to explore factors associated with anxiety and depression among T2DM patients in Bangladesh during the COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional study was conducted among T2DM patients using face-to-face interviews. Anxiety and depressive symptoms were measured using the CAS and PHQ-9 scales. Outcomes were assessed including sociodemographic, lifestyle, anthropometric, and challenges of getting routine medical and healthcare access-related questions. The prevalence of anxiety and depressive symptoms were 29.8% and 22.7%, respectively. Regression analysis reported that males older than 50 years, illiterate, unemployed or retired, urban residents, below the recommended level of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA), low dietary diversity score (DDS) and obese respondents were associated with higher odds of anxiety and depressive symptoms. Moreover, respondents with transport difficulties, unaffordable medicine, medicine shortages, close friends or family members diagnosed with COVID-19 and financial problems during COVID-19 had higher odds of anxiety and depressive symptoms than their counterparts, respectively. Our study suggests providing psychological support, such as home-based psychological interventions, and highlighting policy implications to ensure the well-being of T2DM patients in Bangladesh during the pandemic.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Smoking and alcohol consumption were associated with the development of depression and anxiety. 3'UTR APA quantitative trait loci (3'aQTLs) have been associated with multiple health states and conditions. Our aim is to evaluate the interactive effects of 3'aQTLs-alcohol consumption/tobacco smoking on the risk of anxiety and depression. METHODS The 3'aQTL data of 13 brain regions were extracted from the large-scale 3'aQTL atlas. The phenotype data (frequency of cigarette smoking and alcohol drinking, anxiety score, self-reported anxiety, depression score and self-reported depression) of 90,399-103,011 adults aged 40-69 years living in the UK and contributing to the UK Biobank during 2006-2010, were obtained from the UK Biobank cohort. The frequency of cigarette smoking and alcohol drinking of each subject were defined by the amount of smoking and alcohol drinking of self-reported, respectively. The continuous alcohol consumption/smoking terms were further categorized in tertiles. 3'aQTL-by-environmental interaction analysis was then performed to evaluate the associations of gene-smoking/alcohol consumption interactions with anxiety and depression using generalized linear model (GLM) of PLINK 2.0 with an additive mode of inheritance. Furthermore, GLM was also used to explore the relationship between alcohol consumption/smoking with hazard of anxiety/depression stratified by allele for the significant genotyped SNPs that modified the alcohol consumption/smoking-anxiety/depression association. RESULTS The interaction analysis identified several candidate 3'aQTLs-alcohol consumption interactions, such as rs7602638 located in PPP3R1 (β = 0.08, P = 6.50 × 10-6) for anxiety score; rs10925518 located in RYR2 (OR = 0.95, P = 3.06 × 10-5) for self-reported depression. Interestingly, we also observed that the interactions between TMOD1 (β = 0.18, P = 3.30 × 10-8 for anxiety score; β = 0.17, P = 1.42 × 10-6 for depression score), ZNF407 (β = 0.17, P = 2.11 × 10-6 for anxiety score; β = 0.15, P = 4.26 × 10-5 for depression score) and alcohol consumption was not only associated with anxiety, but related to depression. Besides, we found that relationship between alcohol consumption and hazard of anxiety/depression was significantly different for different SNPs genotypes, such as rs34505550 in TMOD1 (AA: OR = 1.03, P = 1.79 × 10-6; AG: OR = 1.00, P = 0.94; GG: OR = 1.00, P = 0.21) for self-reported anxiety. LIMITATIONS The identified 3'aQTLs-alcohol consumption/smoking interactions were associated with depression and anxiety, and its potential biological mechanisms need to be further revealed. CONCLUSIONS Our study identified important interactions between candidate 3'aQTL and alcohol consumption/smoking on depression and anxiety, and found that the 3'aQTL may modify the associations between consumption/smoking with depression and anxiety. These findings may help to further explore the pathogenesis of depression and anxiety.

Abstract
Background and objectives Emotional and cognitive deficits are prevalent in strokes involving the thalamus. In contrast to cognitive deficits, emotional deficits have not been studied prospectively in isolated thalamic stroke. Methods In 37 ischemic thalamic stroke patients (57.0 [50.0; 69.5] years [median (Q1; Q3)], 21 males, 5 anterior, 12 paramedian, 20 inferolateral vascular territory), and 37 non-stroke control patients matched for age and sex, we prospectively examined depression, anxiety, activities of daily living, and quality of life at 1, 6, 12, and 24 months post-stroke using the Hospital-Anxiety-and-Depression Scale (HADS), Nürnberger-Alters-Alltagsaktivitäten scale (NAA), and Short Form-36 (SF36) questionnaire. Voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping (VLSM) and lesion-subtraction analyzes were performed to determine associations between questionnaire scores and thalamic stroke topography. Results At 1 month post-stroke, anterior thalamic stroke patients had higher depression scores [8.0 (7.5; 10.5)] than paramedian [4.5 (1.0; 5.8)] and inferolateral [4.0 (1.0; 7.0)] thalamic stroke patients. Furthermore, anterior thalamic stroke patients had higher anxiety scores [11.0 (8.0; 14.5)] than their matched controls [2.5 (2.0; 2.5)], paramedian [4.5 (1.0; 5.8)] and inferior [4.0 (1.0; 7.0)] thalamic stroke patients. Depression and anxiety scores in anterior thalamic stroke patients remained high across the follow-up [depression: 9.0 (3.5; 13,8); anxiety:10.05 (2.8, 14.5)].Physical health assessed by SF36 was intact in anterior [1 month post-stroke: T-score = 55.9 (37.0; 57.6)] but reduced in inferolateral [44.5(32.4; 53.1)] thalamic stroke, whereas mental health was reduced in anterior thalamic stroke [32.0 (29.8; 47.3)].VLSM confirmed that voxels in the anterior thalamus around Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI) coordinates X = -8, Y = -12, Z = 2 were more often affected by the stroke in depressed (HADS-score ≥ 8) than non-depressed (HADS-score < 8) patients and voxels around coordinates X = -10, Y = -12, Z = 2 were more often affected in anxious (HADS-score ≥ 8) than non-anxious (HADS-score < 8) patients. Conclusion Anterior, but not paramedian or inferolateral thalamic stroke was associated with depression and anxiety. Even though our results are mostly significant in the left thalamus, this observation on stroke laterality might be confounded by the fact that the right hemisphere was underrepresented in our study.

Abstract
Background A healthy lifestyle is beneficial to individuals' health. However, little is known about the associations of lifestyle factors with mental health and well-being. This study examined the associations of lifestyle factors with mental health (i.e., depression, anxiety, loneliness, perceived pressure, and self-rated health status) and well-being in Chinese adults. Methods A nationally representative survey was conducted in China from 20 June 2022 to 31 August 2022. Data from the survey were analyzed using multiple linear regression to determine the associations of lifestyle with mental health and well-being in Chinese adults. Standardized regression coefficients (β) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using multiple linear regression. Results The survey included 28,138 Chinese adults. Multiple linear regression results showed that there were significant negative associations of lifestyle scores with scores of depression (β = -0.93, 95% CI: -0.98, -0.88), anxiety (β = -0.71, 95% CI: -0.76, -0.67), loneliness (β = -0.23, 95% CI: -0.24, -0.21), and perceived pressure (β = -0.19, 95% CI: -0.22, -0.16). Moreover, there were significant positive associations of lifestyle with self-rated health status (β = 1.99, 95% CI: 1.79, 2.20) and well-being (β = 0.96, 95% CI: 0.91, 1.02). Conclusion This study provides insight into the associations of lifestyle factors with mental health and well-being and highlights the importance of improving and maintaining healthy lifestyle behaviors for favorable mental health and well-being.

Abstract
Disrupted brain structures and several life environmental factors have been shown to influence depression and anxiety, but their interactions with anxiety and depression remain elusive. Genome-wide association study datasets of 15 brain structure longitudinal changes (N = 15,640) were obtained from the published study. Genotype and phenotype-related data of depression, anxiety, and life environmental factors (including smoking, alcohol drinking, coffee intake, maternal smoking, physical activity, vitamin D, insomnia, sleep duration, and family satisfaction) were collected from UK Biobank. We calculated the polygenic risk scores (PRS) of 15 brain structure changes and then conducted linear regression analyses to explore the interactions of brain structure changes and life environmental factors on depression and anxiety using 15 brain structure change-related PRS, life environmental factors and interactions of them as instrumental variables, and depression score or anxiety score as outcomes. Sex stratification in all analyses was performed to reveal sex-specific differences in the interactions. We found 14 shared interactions related to both depression and anxiety in total sample, such as alcohol drinking × cerebellum white matter 3 (WM; beta = -.003, p = .018 for depression; beta = -003, p = .008 for anxiety) and maternal smoking × nucleus accumbens 2 (beta = .088, p = .002 for depression; beta = .070, p = .008 for anxiety). We also observed sex-specific differences in the interactions, for instance, alcohol drinking × cerebellum WM 3 was negatively associated with depression and anxiety in males (beta = -.004, p = .020 for depression; beta = -.005, p = .002 for anxiety). Our study results reveal the important interactions between brain structure changes and several life environmental factors on depression and anxiety, which may help to explore the pathogenesis of depression and anxiety.

Abstract
Objectives: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) accounts for a majority of the disability associated with LBP, which can produce long-term negative effects. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the association between smoking and pain, dysfunction and psychological status in patients with CLBP. Methods: The 54 patients with CLBP were recruited and divided into smoking and non-smoking groups. Their pain, dysfunction, anxiety, depression, fear and quality of life were evaluated. The amount of cigarettes smoked daily was recorded. Results: Significant differences in VAS, ODI, RMDQ and FABQ and the impact of LBP on life and work were found between smoking and non-smoking patients. In addition, a correlation was found between the daily cigarette smoking amount and VASmax, FABQtotal, SDS and FABQ-W. Moreover, a correlation was observed between the amount of cigarettes smoked daily and the degree of impact of low back pain on work. Conclusion: The study found that smoking affected the aggravation of symptoms in patients with CLBP, which indicated that patients with CLBP and people at risk of LBP should be aware of the harm caused by smoking.

Abstract
Cultivating and maintaining good mental health and a healthy lifestyle during adolescence-the period when physical and psychological development occurs-is important. Further, an unhealthy lifestyle can have long-term effects on health. Few studies have examined the multiple effects of lifestyle risk behavior on mental health, and the behaviors that interact with this relationship remain unclear. This study aimed to explore the associations between anxiety, depressive symptoms, and suicidal ideation and a cumulative unhealthy lifestyle. The study included 54,948 participants from the 2020 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey. The generalized anxiety disorder-7 scale was used to define the disorder. Depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation were evaluated using a self-reported questionnaire. The relationship between mental health and lifestyle risk scores was examined using multiple logistic regression analysis. There was a significantly positive relationship of a high lifestyle risk score with the risk of generalized anxiety disorder, depressive symptoms, and suicidal ideation. There were interaction effects between sex and academic achievement. Insufficient/prolonged sleep was strongly associated with poor mental health among Korean adolescents. Our findings showed an association between poor mental health and high lifestyle risk scores. Longitudinal studies to identify potential risk behaviors and to reveal causal relationships are warranted.

Abstract
Osteoporosis is the most common metabolic bone disease. The complications of osteoporosis have influence on people's lives and lead to anxiety and depression. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between osteoporosis and depression among Iranian patients. This cross-sectional analytical survey study conducted among 500 patients referred to a Bone Densitometry Center in Iran. They were assigned into with osteoporosis group (n = 250) and non-affected group (n = 250). The Persian version of the 13-item Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) was used to assess depression. ANOVA, independent t-test, chi-square were used to compare the data. All analyses were done using SPSS version 22 software. A P value ≤ 0.05 represented statistical significance. The majority of people with osteoporosis (86.9%), suffered from mild to moderate depression and the majority of normal people (84.6%) were non-depressed. The mean scores (SD) of depressions in the patients with osteoporosis and normal status was 6.94 (2.39) and 2.50 (1.01), respectively. Statistical analyses showed that the mean scores of depressions significantly different between the two groups (P < 0.05). The results indicate that depression is associated with osteoporosis. As a result, physicians are expected to pay attention to depression in people with osteoporosis and to treat it.

Determining health-promoting behavior in smokers preparing to quit: a holistic and personalized approach. EPMA J 2019; 10:115-123. Abstract
Background Smoking cessation practices enable health professionals to identify lifestyle of their patients as an initial step to achieve predictive, preventive, and personalized medicine (PPPM). In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between the smoking habit and health-promoting behavior of patients who planned to quit smoking. Methods In this descriptive study, Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile II (HPLP-II) was implemented to current smokers admitted to smoking cessation outpatient clinics of two tertiary hospitals. Patients without any comorbidities were included. Sociodemographic variables, Fagerström dependency test, and smoking habit were recorded. Descriptive and analytical statistical evaluations were performed. Results A total of 200 patients, 134 men (67%) and 66 women (33%) with a mean age of 34.49 ± 8.82, were included to the study. Among them, 90 (45%) were white collar, and 110 (55%) were blue-collar workers. Patients with BMI ≥ 25 were 126 (63%); Fagerström test score median was 7. Packages per year, dependency scores, the age the patients started smoking, and cigarettes smoked per day inversely correlated with health-promoting behavior. Our patients had high scores in spiritual growth and interpersonal relationships and had low scores in physical activity and stress management. Health-promoting behavior, health responsibility, self-actualization, and interpersonal relationships were less favorable in blue-collar workers than white-collar workers. Conclusions Smoking behavior affects especially physical activity and stress management in the study population preparing for smoking cessation. Health-promoting activities in smokers are influenced by occupation as well as dependency levels and smoking habits. Differences exist among white and blue-collar workers in health-promoting behavior. Defining and screening multiple health risk behavior in smokers empower predictive measures and targeted preventive medicine, such as maintaining healthy nutrition and leaving sedentary lifestyle along with efforts to quit smoking. Awareness about health-promoting behavior and thus identifying smokers who need lifestyle interventions can provide and attenuate a holistic and personalized approach in preventive medicine.

Abstract
Background The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between anxiety proneness and aggressive behavior in adolescents. Methods A quantitative, large scale cross-sectional study was conducted in Korea. The survey questionnaire included general health behavior and scales for assessing anxiety (Revised Children’s Manifest Anxiety Scale; RCMAS) and aggressive behavior (The Aggression Questionnaire; AQ) in adolescents. Results A total of 2432 students participated in the survey, and 1933 individuals completed the questionnaire, indicating a response rate of 79.5%. Based on RCMAS, 163 (8.4%) subjects were classified as the anxiety group. Aggressive behavior was significantly associated with higher anxiety scores. In particular, among four subdomains of aggression, anger and hostility had a stronger relationship with anxiety than did physical and verbal aggression. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that anxiety was independently associated with gender, age, headache, constipation, asthma, and aggression score. Adolescents with total aggression scores of 69 or higher showed a 9-fold (AOR = 9.00, CI = 6.33–13.51) higher risk of anxiety compared to those with under 69. Conclusion Aggression and anxiety are important aspects of mental health in adolescents. Our results demonstrated that higher risk of anxiety was associated with total aggression scores. In particular, indirect aggression (i.e. anger and hostility) was more closely associated with anxiety than direct aggression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Smoking is a leading modifiable cause of global morbidity and mortality. Research from high-income countries has found a high prevalence of smoking among people with depression and suggested that this may partially contribute to the increased premature mortality in this population. Limited research has investigated smoking behaviors across the depression spectrum and in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This study explored the relationship between depression and smoking across 48 LMICs. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional, community-based study comprising 242,952 people [mean age 38.4 (SD = 16.1) years, 50.8% females] from the World Health Survey. Multivariable binary logistic regression analyses were performed to investigate the relationship between depression (including subsyndromal, brief depressive episode and depressive episodes) and smoking behaviours. RESULTS Overall, the prevalence of current smoking was lowest in Africa (13.5%) and highest in Asia (32.2%). A depressive episode was present in 6.7% of the sample. Compared to people without depression, subsyndromal depression, brief depressive episode, and depressive episodes were all significantly associated with smoking with similar effect sizes (ORs: 1.36-1.49). Countrywide meta-analysis found that the pooled overall OR for smoking in depression was 1.42 (95%CI = 1.32-1.52, I2 = 39.7%). Furthermore, alcohol consumption and male gender were consistently associated with smoking across all regions and smoking was consistently less common in those who were wealthier and had a higher education. CONCLUSION These data suggest that the depression spectrum is consistently associated with high levels of smoking behaivours in LMICs. Given that most of the world's smokers reside in LMICs, future smoking cessation interventions are required to target people with depression.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the joint association of passive and active smoking with self-rated health and life satisfaction among Iranian children and adolescents. METHODS Using a multistage random cluster sampling method, a representative sample of 14 880 school students were selected from urban and rural areas of 30 provinces of Iran. Data were gathered using a questionnaire, a weight scale and metre. Participants were classified into four groups based on their smoking patterns: 'non-smoker', 'only active smoker', 'only passive smoker' and 'active and passive smoker'. Life satisfaction (LS) and self-rated health (SRH) were assessed by self-administered validated questionnaires based on the WHO-Global School-based student Health Survey (WHO-GSHS). Data were analysed using a t-test, χ2 test and multiple logistic regression. RESULTS A total of 13 486 individuals (6640 girls and 6846 boys) out of 14 880 invited participated in the study (response rate 90.6%). LS and good SRH showed linearly negative associations with smoking status in both sexes. The proportions of LS and SRH categories were significantly different among all subsets of smoking status. Those classified as 'non-smokers' had the highest proportions of LS and good SRH, followed by 'only passive smokers' and 'only active smokers', while those with 'active and passive smoking' had the lowest proportions of LS and good SRH. In a multivariate model, students in the 'active and passive smoking' group had lower odds of LS (OR 0.43; 95% CI 0.32 to 0.57) and good SRH (OR 0.51; 95% CI 0.38 to 0.68) than those in the 'non-smoker' group. Students in the 'only passive smoker' group also had lower odds of LS (OR 0.75; 95% CI 0.67 to 0.83) and good SRH (OR 0.72; 95% CI 0.66 to 0.80) compared with the 'non-smoker' group. CONCLUSIONS Adolescents with different smoking habits and exposure patterns have poorer SRH and LS than non-smokers. Both active and passive smoking status could affect LS and SRH in adolescents. Therefore, smoking prevention strategies should be considered as a health priority in school health services for promoting psychological well-being in children and adolescents.
