The antimicrobial action of polyaniline involves production of oxidative stress while functionalisation of polyaniline introduces additional mechanisms

Highly Durable Antibacterial Textiles: Cross-Linked Protonated Polyaniline-Polyacrylic Acid with Prolonged Electrical Stability

This study addressed the limited antibacterial durability of textile materials, which has suppressed their applications in preventing infectious disease transmission. A class of highly durable antibacterial textiles was developed by incorporating protonated polyaniline (PANI) textile with poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) as the functional binder via cross-linking polymerization. The resulting PAA-PANI textile exhibits exceptional electrical conductivity, reaching 8.33 ± 0.04 × 10-3 S/cm when cross-linked with 30% PAA. Remarkably, this textile maintains its electrical stability at 10-3 S/cm even after 50 washing cycles, demonstrating unparalleled durability. Furthermore, the PANI-PAA textile showcases remarkable antibacterial efficacy, with 95.48% efficiency against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and 92.35% efficiency against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, even after 50 washing cycles. Comparatively, the PAA-PANI textile outperforms its PANI counterpart by achieving an astounding 80% scavenging activity rate, whereas the latter only displayed a rate of 3.22%. This result suggests a solid integration of PAA-PANI into the textile, leading to sustainable antioxidant release. The successful cross-linking of PAA-PANI in textiles holds significant implications for various industries, offering a foundation for the development of wearable textiles with unprecedented antibacterial durability and electrical stability. This breakthrough opens new avenues for combating infectious diseases and enhancing the performance of wearable technologies.

Synthesis and characterization of antimicrobial colloidal polyanilines

The potential application of colloidal polyaniline (PANI) as an antimicrobial is limited by challenges related to solubility in common organic solvents, scalability, and antimicrobial potency. To address these limitations, we introduced a functionalized PANI (fPANI) with carboxyl groups through the polymerisation of aniline and 3-aminobenzoic acid in a 1:1 molar ratio. fPANI is more soluble than PANI which was determined using a qualitative study. We further enhanced the solubility and antimicrobial activity of fPANI by incorporating Ag nanoparticles onto the synthesized fPANI colloid via direct addition of 10 mM AgNO3. The improved solubility can be attributed to an approximately 3-fold reduction in size of particles. Mean particle sizes are measured at 1322 nm for fPANI colloid and 473 nm for fPANI-Ag colloid, showing a high dispersion and deagglomeration effect from Ag nanoparticles. Antimicrobial tests demonstrated that fPANI-Ag colloids exhibited superior potency against Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus, Gram-negative Escherichia coli, and Bacteriophage PhiX 174 when compared to fPANI alone. The minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) and minimum virucidal concentration (MVC) values were halved for fPANI-Ag compared to fPANI colloid and attributed to the combination of Ag nanoparticles with the fPANI polymer. The antimicrobial fPANI-Ag colloid presented in this study shows promising results, and further exploration into scale-up can be pursued for potential biomedical applications.

Effective antibacterial agents in modern wound dressings: a review

Wound infections are a significant concern in healthcare, leading to long healing times. Traditional approaches for managing wound infections rely heavily on systemic antibiotics, which are associated with the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Therefore, the development of alternative antibacterial materials for wound care has gained considerable attention. In today's world, new generations of wound dressing are commonly used to heal wounds. These new dressings keep the wound and the area around it moist to improve wound healing. However, this moist environment can also foster an environment that is favorable for the growth of bacteria. Excessive antibiotic use poses a significant threat to human health and causes bacterial resistance, so new-generation wound dressings must be designed and developed to reduce the risk of infection. Wound dressings using antimicrobial compounds minimize wound bacterial colonization, making them the best way to avoid open wound infection. We aim to provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of the latest advancements in antibacterial materials for wound management.

Intrinsic Light-Activated Oxidase Mimicking Activity of Conductive Polyaniline Nanofibers: A Class of Metal-Free Nanozyme

In recent decades, studies have focused on inorganic nanozymes to overcome the intrinsic drawbacks of bioenzymes due to the demands of improving the reaction conditions and lack of robustness to harsh environmental factors. Many biochemical reactions catalyzed by enzymes require light activation. Light-activated nanozymes have distinct advantages, including being regulated by light stimuli, activating the molecular oxygen to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) without interfering supplementary oxidants, and often showing a synergistic effect to catalyze some challenging reactions. Only a few studies have been done on this connection. Therefore, it is still a big challenge to develop a nanozyme regulated by light activation. Herein, we uncovered the light-activated oxidase mimicking activity of a conducting polymer polyaniline nanofibers (PANI-NFs). PANI-NFs exhibit intrinsic light-activated brilliant oxidase-like activity, can catalyze the colorless tetramethyl benzidine (TMB) to produce a blue product TMBox, and have a distinct K_m = 0.087 mM and a high V_max = 2.32 μM min^-1 value, measured by using Hanes-Woolf kinetics. We also report the light-activated oxidase activity of some other renowned carbocatalysts graphene oxide and graphitic carbon nitride and compare them with PANI-NFs. This type of property shown by the conductive polymer is amazing. The density functional theory is used to verify the stability and the mode of adsorption of the PANI NFs-TMB composite, which corroborates the experimental results. Furthermore, the current nanozyme demonstrated a significant ability to kill both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria as well as effectively destroy biofilms under physiological conditions. We believe that this work provides the motivation to create a link between optoelectronics and biological activity in the near future.

Emerging Applications of Versatile Polyaniline-Based Polymers in the Food Industry

Intrinsically conducting polymers (ICPs) have been widely studied in various applications, such as sensors, tissue engineering, drug delivery, and semiconductors. Specifically, polyaniline (PANI) stands out in food industry applications due to its advantageous reversible redox properties, electrical conductivity, and simple modification. The rising concerns about food safety and security have encouraged the development of PANI as an antioxidant, antimicrobial agent, food freshness indicator, and electronic nose. At the same time, it plays an important role in food safety control to ensure the quality of food. This study reviews the emerging applications of PANI in the food industry. It has been found that the versatile applications of PANI allow the advancement of modern active and intelligent food packaging and better food quality monitoring systems.

Betaine-Based Deep Eutectic Solvent as a New Media for Laccase-Catalyzed Template-Guided Polymerization/Copolymerization of Aniline and 3-Aminobenzoic Acid

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) can compensate for some of the major drawbacks of traditional organic solvents and ionic liquids and meet all requirements of green chemistry. However, the potential of their use as a medium for biocatalytic reactions has not been adequately studied. In this work we used the DES betaine-glycerol with a molar ratio of 1:2 as co-solvent for enzymatic template-guided polymerization/copolymerization of aniline (ANI) and 3-aminobenzoic acid (3ABA). The laccase from the basidial fungus Trametes hirsuta and air oxygen served as catalyst and oxidant, respectively. Sodium polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) was used as template. Interpolyelectrolyte complexes of homopolymers polyaniline (PANI) and poly(3-aminobenzoic acid) (P3ABA) and copolymer poly(aniline-co-3-aminobenzoic acid) (P(ANI-3ABA)) were prepared and their physico-chemical properties were studied by UV-Vis and FTIR spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. According to the results obtained by atomic force microscopy, PANI/PSS had a granular shape, P(ANI-3ABA)/PSS had a spherical shape and P3ABA/PSS had a spindle-like shape. The copolymer showed a greater antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylcocus aureus as compared with the homopolymers. The minimal inhibitory concentration of the P(ANI-3ABA)/PSS against the gram-positive bacterium S. aureus was 0.125 mg mL⁻¹.

Resveratrol-Schiff Base Hybrid Compounds with Selective Antibacterial Activity: Synthesis, Biological Activity, and Computational Study

Nowadays, antimicrobial resistance is a serious concern associated with the reduced efficacy of traditional antibiotics and an increased health burden worldwide. In response to this challenge, the scientific community is developing a new generation of antibacterial molecules. Contributing to this effort, and inspired by the resveratrol structure, five new resveratrol-dimers (9a−9e) and one resveratrol-monomer (10a) were synthetized using 2,5-dibromo-1,4-diaminobenzene (8) as the core compound for Schiff base bridge conformation. These compounds were evaluated in vitro against pathogenic clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus sp., and Listeria monocytogenes. Antibacterial activity measurements of resveratrol-Schiff base derivatives (9a−9e) and their precursors (4−8) showed high selectivity against Listeria monocytogenes, being 2.5 and 13.7 times more potent than chloramphenicol, while resveratrol showed an EC50 > 320 µg/mL on the same model. Moreover, a prospective mechanism of action for these compounds against L. monocytogenes strains was proposed using molecular docking analysis, finding a plausible inhibition of internalin C (InlC), a surface protein relevant in bacteria−host interaction. These results would allow for the future development of new molecules for listeriosis treatment based on compound 8.

Antibacterial Performance of Protonated Polyaniline-Integrated Polyester Fabrics

During the last few years, there has been an increase in public awareness of antimicrobial fabrics, as well as an increase in commercial opportunities for their use in pharmaceutical and medical settings. The present study reports on the optimized fabrication of protonated polyaniline (PANI)-integrated polyester (PES) fabric. Para-toluene sulfonic acid (pTSA) was used to protonate the PANI fabric and thus grant it antibacterial performance. The results of a 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging assay showed high antioxidant activity of protonated PANI fabric at a scavenging efficiency of 84.83%. Moreover, the findings revealed remarkably sensitive antibacterial performance of PANI-integrated fabric against the following Gram-positive bacteria: methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), S. epidermidis, and S. aureus; and also against the following Gram-negative bacteria: P. aeruginosa, E. coli, and S. typhi. Attenuated total reflectance–Fourier transform infrared (ATR–FTIR) spectroscopy and energy dispersive X–ray fluorescence (EDXRF) were used to determine the changes in the structural and elemental compositions of PANI fabric upon treatment with bacterial strains. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) revealed that the electrical conductivity value of protonated PANI fabric decreased by one (1) order of magnitude against P. aeruginosa and S. aureus, from 3.35 ± 7.81 × 10⁻³ S cm⁻¹ to 6.11 ± 7.81 × 10⁻⁴ S cm⁻¹ and 4.63 ± 7.81 × 10⁻⁴ S cm⁻¹, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis showed the disruption of bacterial membranes and their structures when exposed to protonated PANI fabric; meanwhile, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) demonstrated that the fabric retained its thermal stability characteristics. These findings open up potential for the use of antimicrobial fabrics in the pharmaceutical and medical sectors.

Highly efficient, bioactive, and bifunctional sorbent p-n-p visible light heterogeneous photocatalyst utilizing ultra-fine ZnS nanoparticles embedded in a polymeric nanocomposite

This study reports the successful synthesis of a ZnS@GO@Pani polymeric nanocomposite (NC) via chemical polymerization. The product was used for simultaneous photocatalytic degradation-adsorption of malachite green (MG), a carcinogenic and widely used dye. The physicochemical properties of the prepared NC were characterized by various techniques. Morphological and XRD results confirmed the fine size of ZnS nanoparticles (NPs) with an approximate mean size of 5 nm, uniformly distributed within the polymeric matrix. For comparative purposes, photocatalytic dye degradation-adsorption of this nanohybrid was explored both in the dark and under natural light. It was observed that 0.1 g of the ternary NC in MG aqueous solution (20 ppm) leads to dye adsorption within 15 minutes with an efficiency of 70% under dark conditions. Also, MG removal efficiency of up to 90% was achieved in 15 minutes under natural light owing to integrated photocatalytic degradation-adsorption mechanisms. Adsorption isotherm studies were performed considering Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) models. The results showed that the Freundlich isotherm with R 2 = 0.988 is well consistent with the experimental data. Integrated photocatalytic degradation-adsorption kinetics were modeled with pseudo-first-order (PFO) and pseudo-second-order (PSO) models where PSO with R 2 = 0.999 best fitted the data, implying the predominant role of chemical adsorption in the dye removal process. Antibacterial tests revealed superior antibacterial activity of the prepared ZnS@GO@Pani NC against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, demonstrating the remarkable synergistic effect of ZnS NPs embedded in the GO@Pani matrix. Accordingly, the prepared NC could be regarded as a promising candidate for wastewater treatment applications. The leaching and regeneration studies also confirmed that the prepared NC is a non-toxic dye removal agent with good reusability.

Recent Advancement of the Current Aspects of g-C3 N4 for its Photocatalytic Applications in Sustainable Energy System

Being one of the foremost enticing and intriguing innovations, heterogeneous photocatalysis has also been used to effectively gather, transform, and conserve sustainable sun's radiation for the production of efficient and clean fossil energy as well as a wide range of ecological implications. The generation of solar fuel-based water splitting and CO₂ photoreduction is excellent for generating alternative resources and reducing global warming. Developing an inexpensive photocatalyst can effectively split water into hydrogen (H₂ ), oxygen (O₂ ) sources, and carbon dioxide (CO₂ ) into fuel sources, which is a crucial problem in photocatalysis. The metal-free g-C₃ N₄ photocatalyst has a high solar fuel generation potential. This review covers the most recent advancements in g-C₃ N₄ preparation, including innovative design concepts and new synthesis methods, and novel ideas for expanding the light absorption of pure g-C₃ N₄ for photocatalytic application. Similarly, the main issue concerning research and prospects in photocatalysts based g-C₃ N₄ was also discussed. The current dissertation provides an overview of comprehensive understanding of the exploitation of the extraordinary systemic and characteristics, as well as the fabrication processes and uses of g-C₃ N₄ .

Polyaniline-Conjugated Boron Nitride Nanoparticles Exhibiting Potent Effects against Pathogenic Brain-Eating Amoebae

Free-living amoebae include Acanthamoeba castellanii and Naegleria fowleri that are opportunistic protozoa responsible for life-threatening central nervous system infections with mortality rates over 90%. The rising number of cases and high mortality rates are indicative of the critical unmet need for the development of efficient drugs in order to avert future deaths. In this study, we assess the anti-amoebic capacity of a conducting polymer nanocomposite comprising polyaniline (PANI) and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) against A. castellanii and N. fowleri. We observed significant amoebicidal and cysticidal effects using 100 μg/mL PANI/hBN (P < 0.05). Further, the nanocomposite demonstrated negligible cytotoxicity toward HaCaT and primary human corneal epithelial cells (pHCECs). In evaluating the mode of inhibition of A. castellanii due to treatment with PANI/hBN, increased intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) was measured and scanning microscopy visualized the formation of pores in the amoebae. Overall, this study is suggestive of the potential of the PANI/hBN nanocomposite as a promising therapy for amoeba infections.

Thermochromic Polymeric Films for Applications in Active Intelligent Packaging-An Overview

The need for passive sensors to monitor changes in temperature has been critical in several packaging related applications. Most of these applications involve the use of bar codes, inks and equipment that involve constant complex electronic manipulation. The objective of this paper is to explore solutions to temperature measurements that not only provide product information but also the condition of the product in real time, specifically shelf-life. The study will explore previously proposed solutions as well as plans for modified approaches that involve the use of smart polymers as temperature sensors.

Multifunctional SGQDs-CORM@HA nanosheets for bacterial eradication through cascade-activated "nanoknife" effect and photodynamic/CO gas therapy

Infection associated with multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria has become a serious threat to public health, and there is an urgent demand of developing new antibiotics that offer combinatorial therapy to effectively combat MDR. Herein, a multifunctional two-dimensional nanoantibiotic was facilely designed and established on the basis of the covalent conjugation of CO-releasing molecule (CORM-401) and electrostatic adsorption of hyaluronic acid (HA) onto single-layered graphene quantum dots (SGQDs) to assemble SGQDs-CORM@HA nanosheets, abbreviated as SCH. Upon the enrichment of as-prepared nanoantibiotics in the community of targeted microbe, bacterial-secreted hyaluronidase (HAase) would cleave HA on SCH, and the sharp edges as well as the reactive sites on SGQDs-CORM nanosheets were exposed for cascade activation of synergistic antibacterial effects. Specifically, ultrathin SGQDs-CORM nanosheets can penetrate into bacterial cells deemed as the unique "nanoknife" effect. Under white light irradiation, SGQDs-CORM nanosheets can act as a high-efficient photosensitizer to generate cytotoxic singlet oxygen (¹O₂), as a well-recognized reactive oxygen species (ROS), to produce high oxidative stress and damage bacteria. As a complementary to photodynamic therapy (PDT), the accumulation of local ROS further triggered the release of CO to hinder the bacterial growth via causing plasma membrane damage and inducing metabolic disorders. Such synergistic treatment regimen arising from cascade-activated "nanoknife" effect and photodynamic/CO gas therapy, was devoted to outstanding on-demand antibacterial performance both in vitro and in vivo. Fascinatingly, the nanoplatform showed good biocompatibility toward both normal somatic cells and non-targeted bacteria. The remarkable antibacterial capability and admirable biocompatibility endow SCH with great potential to fight against MDR pathogens for in-coming clinical translations.

Synthesis of Polyaniline Coated Magnesium and Cobalt Oxide Nanoparticles through Eco-Friendly Approach and Their Application as Antifungal Agents

Plant-mediated synthesis of nanoparticles exhibits great potential to minimize the generation of chemical waste through the utilization of non-toxic precursors. In this research work, we report the synthesis of magnesium oxide (MgO) and cobalt oxide (Co₃O₄) nanoparticles through a green approach using Manilkara zapota leaves extract, their surface modification by polyaniline (PANI), and antifungal properties against Aspergillus niger. Textural and structural characterization of modified and unmodified metal oxide nanoparticles were evaluated using FT-IR, SEM, and XRD. The optimal conditions for inhibition of Aspergillus niger were achieved by varying nanoparticles’ concentration and time exposure. Results demonstrate that PANI/MgO nanoparticles were superior in function relative to PANI/Co₃O₄ nanoparticles to control the growth rate of Aspergillus niger at optimal conditions (time exposure of 72 h and nanoparticles concentration of 24 mM). A percentage decrease of 73.2% and 65.1% in fungal growth was observed using PANI/MgO and PANI/Co₃O₄ nanoparticles, respectively, which was higher than the unmodified metal oxide nanoparticles (67.5% and 63.2%).

Combined use of Bacillus strains and Miscanthus for accelerating biodegradation of poly(lactic acid) and poly(ethylene terephthalate)

Background

The aim of this study was to verify whether the presence of Bacillus strains and of miscanthus influence biodegradation and formed of biofilm of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET).

Methods

The experiment conducted in compost soil showed that strains Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus cereus isolated from heavy metal contaminated environment have biochemical activity and accelerate biodegradation of both plastic materials.

Results

For PLA film it was found that the carbonyl index dropped by over 15% in the presence of B. subtilis, while the film tensile strength decreased by 35% and the oxygen to carbon O/C ratio was higher by 3% in the presence of B. cereus, and the presence of miscanthus resulted in a loss of weight. For PET film, a decrease in the carbonyl index by 16% was observed following inoculation with B. cereus. The metabolic activity of this strain contributed to the reduction of the film’s tensile strength by 17% and to the increase in the permeability to O₂ and CO₂. The most intense degradation of PET film was observed in the presence of bacteria and plants. B. subtilis strain combined with miscanthus plantings may be a promising method for accelerating PLA and PET degradation in compost soil.

Design and characterization of PANI/starch/Fe2O3 bio composite for wastewater remediation

A new synthesized polyaniline/starch/hematite bio composite (PANI/S/Fe₂O₃ BC) has been studied as an effective material for on-site water remediation. PANI/S/Fe₂O₃ BC was developed by combining the techniques of co-precipitation and interfacial polymerization in the presence of aqueous starch solution in an acidic medium under ultrasonic irradiation. The nano-morphologies and structures of the designed PANI/S/Fe₂O₃ BC were evaluated by various techniques relative to PANI and Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles. In single and multiple systems, PANI/S/Fe₂O₃ BC was evaluated as a possible adsorbent for different heavy metals, including As³⁺, Zn²⁺, and Co²⁺, relative to PANI and Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles. In terms of pH value, operating temperature, initial heavy metal concentration, contact time, adsorbent dose and competitive ions in the solutions, the adsorption process was optimized. For 92% overall adsorption of Co²⁺ and 100% overall adsorption of both As³⁺ and Zn²⁺, the adsorption equilibrium was achieved within 60 and 120 min, respectively. In addition, adsorption thermodynamic analysis shows that the As³⁺ ions adsorption process was not random and the pseudo-second-order fitted with experimental results. Moreover, PANI/S/Fe₂O₃ BC was evaluated as an antibacterial agent against Gram-negative bacteria (Salmonella typhimurium) and Gram-positive bacteria (S. aureus, Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus, Aureus Clinical isolate and Bacillus subtilis). The reported performances indicated that the PANI/S/Fe₂O₃ BC is a potent candidate for industrial water bioremediation.

Synthesis of gold nanoparticles/polyaniline boronic acid/sodium alginate aqueous nanocomposite based on chemical oxidative polymerization for biological applications

Gold nanoparticles/polyaniline boronic acid/sodium alginate aqueous nanocomposite ((PABA-SAL)@AuNPs) was fabricated. Aniline boronic acid (ABA) served as reductant of gold salt, all within the SAL solution. While ABA reduced gold salt to its nanoparticles, the ABA monomer was also oxidized to its conducting polymeric form (PABA). The presence of PABA in the reaction mixture exerted solubility and stability challenge, thus SAL was used as stabilizer and solubilizer for PABA. The numerous cis-diol groups of SAL could bind to boronic acid groups of PABA to furnish PABA-SAL repeating polymer structure for AuNPs anchoring. Sparkling ruby red (PABA-SAL)@AuNPs have absorption peaks at 529 and 718 nm. Average particle sizes of nanocomposite were within 15-20 nm, with hydrodynamic diameter of 48.6 ± 0.9 nm, zeta potential of -32.5 ± 1.6 mV and conductivity value of 2015.3 ± 3.2 μS/cm. (PABA-SAL)@AuNPs possessed antibacterial activities against seafood associated bacterial isolates, with MIC and MBC ranging from 4 to 8 μg/mL. The moderate antioxidant capacity of (PABA-SAL)@AuNPs was observed, without any deleterious damages on human red blood cells. It also has good biocompatibility on Caco-2 and RAW 264.7, with cell viability not less than 70%. These results confirm the high prospect of (PABA-SAL)@AuNPs for possible biomedical applications.

Suspended and polycaprolactone immobilized Ag @TiO2/polyaniline nanocomposites for water disinfection and endotoxin degradation by visible and solar light-mediated photocatalysis

In the present study, water contaminated with Escherichia coli (E. coli) cells was photocataytically disinfected using Ag core-TiO₂ shell/Polyaniline nanocomposite (Ag@TiO₂/PANI) under visible light irradiation. Ag@TiO₂/PANI containing 13 weight % of Ag@TiO₂ was found to offer maximum disinfection activity. Band gap energy of Ag@TiO₂/PANI was found to be 2.58 eV. Ag@TiO₂/PANI nanocomposites were efficient in water disinfection in their suspended and immobilized form. Rate of disinfection with Ag@TiO₂/PANI was faster than that with Ag@TiO₂ nanoparticles. Water containing 50 × 10⁸ CFU/mL cells was completely disinfected within 120 min with 1 g/L Ag@TiO₂/PANI nanocomposite. Simultaneous disinfection and endotoxins degradation were achieved. The photocatalytic disinfection of water and endotoxin degradation using Ag@TiO₂/PANI nanocomposite under visible light irradiation followed second order kinetics. The nanocomposite also exhibited a good solar photocatalytic activity.

Potential Applications of Conducting Polymers to Reduce Secondary Bacterial Infections among COVID-19 Patients: a Review

The COVID-19 pandemic is a motivation for material scientists to search for functional materials with valuable properties to alleviate the risks associated with the coronavirus. The formulation of functional materials requires synergistic understanding on the properties of materials and mechanisms of virus transmission and disease progression, including secondary bacterial infections that are prevalent in COVID-19 patients. A viable candidate in the struggle against the pandemic is antimicrobial polymer, due to their favorable properties of flexibility, lightweight, and ease of synthesis. Polymers are the base material for personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves, face mask, face shield, and coverall suit for frontliners. Conducting polymers (CPs) are polymers with electrical properties due to the addition of dopant in the polymer structure. The conductivity of polymers augments their antiviral and antibacterial properties. This review discusses the types of CPs and how their properties could be exploited to ward off bacterial infections in hospital settings, specifically in cases involving COVID-19 patients. This review also covers common CPs fabrication techniques. The key components to produce CPs at several possibilities to fit the current needs in fighting secondary bacterial infections are also discussed.

Antimicrobial and biological effects of polyaniline/polyvinylpyrrolidone nanocomposites loaded with silver nanospheres/triangles

Two Ag–PANI/PVP nanocomposites were prepared using in situ integration of AgNPs during oxidative aniline polymerization, accelerated by the presence of PVP, which as well minimized the risk of particle agglomeration and macroscopic precipitation.

Synthesis and Antibacterial Aspects of Graphitic C3N4@Polyaniline Composites

In this work, Pani and Pani@g-C3N4 was synthesized by in situ oxidative polymerization methodology of aniline, in the presence of g-C3N4. The as prepared Pani@g-C3N4 was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The morphological analysis showed well dispersed Pani in g-C3N4, as well as the coating of Pani on g-C3N4. The XRD further revealed this, and peaks of Pani as well as g-C3N4 was observed, thereby suggesting successful synthesis of the composite. The DC electrical conductivity studies under isothermal and cyclic aging conditions showed high stability of composites over 100 °C. Further, the synthesized composite material proved to be an excellent antimicrobial agent against both type i.e., gram positive Streptococcus pneumoniae and negative bacteria Escherichia coli. In the zone inhibition assay 18 ± 0.5, 16 ± 0.75 and 20 ± 0.5, 22 ± 0.5 mm zone diameter were found against E. coli and S. pneumoniae in presence of pure g-C3N4 and Pani@g-C3N4 at 50 µg concentrations, respectively. Further antimicrobial activity in the presence of sunlight in aqueous medium showed that Pani@g-C3N4 is more potent than pure g-C3N4.

Progress in Conductive Polyaniline-Based Nanocomposites for Biomedical Applications: A Review

Inherently conducting polymers (ICPs) are a specific category of synthetic polymers with distinctive electro-optic properties, which involve conjugated chains with alternating single and double bonds. Polyaniline (PANI), as one of the most well-known ICPs, has outstanding potential applications in biomedicine because of its high electrical conductivity and biocompatibility caused by its hydrophilic nature, low-toxicity, good environmental stability, and nanostructured morphology. Some of the limitations in the use of PANI, such as its low processability and degradability, can be overcome by the preparation of its blends and nanocomposites with various (bio)polymers and nanomaterials, respectively. This review describes the state-of-the-art of biological activities and applications of conductive PANI-based nanocomposites in the biomedical fields, such as antimicrobial therapy, drug delivery, biosensors, nerve regeneration, and tissue engineering. The latest progresses in the biomedical applications of PANI-based nanocomposites are reviewed to provide a background for future research.
