Abstract
OBJECTIVES Previous efforts led to the development of two different polymeric biomaterials for periodontal regeneration with antibacterial photodynamic surface activity. The present study aimed to investigate osseointegration and bone formation of both materials in an ovine model. METHODS Both biomaterials: 1) urethane dimethacrylate-based Biomaterial 1 (BioM1) and 2) tri-armed oligoester-urethane methacrylate-based Biomaterial 2 (BioM2) are enriched with beta-tri-calcium phosphate and the photosensitizer meso-tetra(hydroxyphenyl)chlorin (mTHPC). These materials were implanted in non-critical size bone defects in the sheep femur (n = 16) and tibia (n = 8). Empty defects served as controls (n = 16). Polyfluorochrome sequential bone labeling was carried out at baseline and after 3, 6, and 12 months. Animals were sacrificed after 12 months. Bone specimens (n = 40) were fixed and subjected to microtomographic analysis (µCT) for the evaluation of the bone-volume-fraction (BV/TV), trabecular number and trabecular thickness. Subsequently, histological sections were arranged and polyfluorochrome sequential bone labeling was analyzed by confocal laser scanning microscopy (cLSM). RESULTS cLSM analysis revealed that highest remodeling and bone formation activity occurred during the second half of the study period (6-12 months). Bone formation in the tibia was significantly lower for the control (2.71 ± 1.26%) as compared to BioM1 (6.01 ± 2.99%) and BioM2 (6.45 ± 2.12%); (p = 0.006, p = 0004). Micro-computed tomography revealed a BV/TV volume fraction of 44.72 ± 9.01% in femur defects filled with BioM1 which was significantly higher compared to the control (32.27 ± 7.02%; p = 0.01). Bone architecture (trabecular number, trabecular thickness) did not significantly differ from the self-healed defects. SIGNIFICANCE Both biomaterials, especially BioM1 showed good osseointegration and bone formation characteristics and can be recommended for further examination in periodontal regeneration studies.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Promotion of the psychosocial health of individuals, groups and society, is becoming an increasingly important task for healthcare professions. In the Department of Health Professions at the Bern University of Applied Sciences, an interdisciplinary team of professors and researchers developed an e-learning programme, which highlights a new action model. This innovative model guides health professionals in systematically utilizing health promotion and prevention, to promote psychosocial health among their target groups. Internationally, such a model does not exist. Therefore, it offers an new and systematic approach to promoting psychosocial health among various population health levels.
Objectives
2019-2023: utilization of programme by department professors and researchers, and transfer of this knowledge to students, or to research projects (via internal marketing and incentives); integration of programme into interdisciplinary bachelor curriculum (via learning packages designed for use with students); national and international dissemination of the new model. How is the programme and model perceived among the professors and researchers? What is the models' relevance for public health?
Results
Preliminary results according to various professors, suggest that the programme is user-friendly and very useful. It has been integrated into the interdisciplinary bachelor curriculum. Researchers provided less feedback; however, ongoing incentives should result in its increased integration into research projects. Additional feedback is that the model is an innovative tool, and is relevant for health professionals at the international level. Its dissemination will begin in spring 2020, through its submission for publishing.
Conclusions
This e-learning programme and model are considered to be valuable and innovative. Upon publication, this systematic approach to improving the psychosocial health of target group(s) will be widely available for health professionals.
Key messages
An innovative action-model has been developed for the promotion of psychosocial health. A new understanding of how health promotion and prevention can applied to promote psychosocial health is offered.

Abstract
Abstract
The speaker will present the perspective of civil society, as well as its extensive work to raise awareness and bring together stakeholders committed to tackling AMR across Europe. The Stakeholder Network on AMR, hosted within the European Commission's Healthcare Policy Platform, along with the resulting Roadmap for Action on AMR will be presented. The speaker will explain how the Roadmap and the key strategies and targets identified encompass a 'One-Health' approach, emphasising that AMR can only be addressed through concerted cross-sectoral actions, ranging from infection prevention, better diagnostics and supporting Member States in implementing National Action Plans. The links between AMR and other EU initiatives such as the emerging Cancer Plan, the Farm to Fork Strategy and the European Green Deal will also be elaborated on. Finally, the role of the European Parliament in ensuring that AMR stays high on the agenda and mobilising Member States to act, will be discussed in the context of a newly established MEP Interest Group on AMR with an ambitious strategic work programme for the Parliamentary term 2019 - 2024.

Background/Introduction: Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) is characterized by replacement of the myocardium with fibrous and fatty tissue that may lead to an increased risk of ventricular arrhythmias and heart failure. Although left ventricular (LV) and biventricular forms have been identified post-mortem resulting in the increased use of the term arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy, there is only inclusion of right ventricular wall motion abnormalities in the taskforce diagnostic criteria.
Purpose
The aim of our study was to examine the utility of cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging in characterizing LV or biventricular involvement with late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) in a large cohort of patients with suspected ARVC.
Methods
Retrospective, single-institution, chart review of 76 patients diagnosed with ARVC between January 2009 and July 2019. Data collection and analysis included baseline demographics and parameters specific to diagnosis (definite, borderline, or possible) and risk stratification of ARVC based on 2019 modified taskforce criteria, as well as detailed CMR evaluation.
Results
Of the 76 patients with ARVC, 66 (87%) had at least one CMR with gadolinium administered. In that subset of patients, 27 (41%) had LGE. Of those with LGE, LV involvement was identified in 23 (85%) patients. The pattern of LGE was not localized to one myocardial region but demonstrated variable LV enhancement patterns including anterior, inferior, lateral, septal, basal, mid, apical, and from the sub-epicardium into the mid-myocardium.
Conclusions
Left ventricular involvement reflected by LGE was identified in a high percentage of patients with suspected ARVC, and there was significant variation in the pattern of distribution in terms of region and depth of myocardial involvement. While post-mortem examination of patients with ARVC demonstrates a high prevalence of left ventricular involvement, this study shows that CMR can consistently detect late gadolinium enhancement, and ARVC should be considered in the differential diagnosis for biventricular cardiomyopathy. The identification of variable locations of LGE within the LV suggests there is more than one phenotype, and this imaging modality may help to clarify the implications of left ventricular involvement in disease progression.

Abstract
Background Ulnar nerve compression at the cubital tunnel is the second commonest upper limb neuropathy. Unlike carpal tunnel surgery, most of decompression procedures for this condition are undertaken using general anesthesia (GA). This has inherent economic and patient safety implications. We aimed to assess if there is a difference in early and medium-term outcome scores in patients who have cubital tunnel decompression under general versus local anesthesia (LA). Materials and Methods We undertook a patient outcome evaluation of patients who were under the care of two upper limb surgeons. Patients were evaluated postoperatively using the patient-related ulnar nerve evaluation (PRUNE) questionnaire. Patients were contacted by phone, mail, and face to face in clinics. Results A total of 34 patients were identified in the study. Eleven were excluded from the study. Thirteen patients underwent surgery under LA. The LA group had their procedures performed using local infiltration of the surgical site with 20 mL of 0.5% bupivacaine with adrenaline. Ten patients had their procedures using standard GA and tourniquet. The average PRUNE score in the LA group was 33.8, and that in the GA group was 34.1. This difference in PRUNE score was not statistically significant p > 0.05. Discussion Our data suggest that there is no significant difference in early and midterm outcomes between patients who undergo cubital tunnel decompression using either GA or LA. We advocate the use of LA as it does lead to decreased anesthetic risk and has obvious economic benefits such as lowering the demands on theater and anesthetic resources.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Biomaterials for periodontal regeneration may have insufficient mechanical and antimicrobial properties or are difficult to apply under clinical conditions. The aim of the present study was to develop a polymeric bone grafting material of suitable physical appearance and antimicrobial photodynamic activity. METHODS Two light curable biomaterials based on urethane dimethacrylate (BioM1) and a tri-armed oligoester-urethane methacrylate (BioM2) that additionally contained a mixture of β-tricalcium phosphate microparticles and 20wt% photosensitizer mTHPC (PS) were fabricated and analyzed by their compressive strength, flexural strength and modulus of elasticity. Cytotoxicity was observed by incubating eluates and in direct-contact to MC3T3-E1 cells. Antimicrobial activity was ascertained on Porphyromonas gingivalis and Enterococcus faecalis upon illumination with laser light (652nm, 1×100J/cm2, 2×100J/cm2). RESULTS The compressive strength, flexural strength and elastic modulus were, respectively, 311.73MPa, 22.81MPa and 318.85MPa for BioM1+PS and 742.37MPa, 7.58MPa and 406.23MPa for BioM2+PS. Both materials did not show any cytotoxic behavior. Single laser-illumination (652nm) caused total suppression of P. gingivalis (BioM2+PS), while repeated irradiation reduced E. faecalis by 3.7 (BioM1+PS) and 3.1 (BioM2+PS) log-counts. SIGNIFICANCE Both materials show excellent mechanical and cytocompatible properties. In addition, irradiation with 652nm induced significant bacterial suppression. The manufactured biomaterials might enable a more efficient cure of periodontal bone lesions. Due to the mechanical properties functional stability might be increased. Further, the materials are antimicrobial upon illumination with light that enables a trans-mucosal eradication of residual pathogens.

Abstract
Loading macroalgae into existing anaerobic digestion (AD) plants allows us to overcome challenges such as low digestion efficiencies, trace elements limitation, excessive salinity levels and accumulation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs), observed while digesting algae as a single substrate. In this work, the co-digestion of the brown macroalgae Saccharina latissima with mixed municipal wastewater sludge (WWS) was investigated in mesophilic and thermophilic conditions. The hydraulic retention time (HRT) and the organic loading rate (OLR) were fixed at 19 days and 2.1 g l-1 d-1 of volatile solids (VS), respectively. Initially, WWS was digested alone. Subsequently, a percentage of the total OLR (20%, 50% and finally 80%) was replaced by S. latissima biomass. Optimal digestion conditions were observed at medium-low algae loading (≤50% of total OLR) with an average methane yield close to [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] in mesophilic and thermophilic conditions, respectively. The conductivity values increased with the algae loading without inhibiting the digestion process. The viscosities of the reactor sludges revealed decreasing values with reduced WWS loading at both temperatures, enhancing mixing properties.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Investigate cardiorespiratory outcomes in children surviving previable preterm premature rupture of membranes (PV-PPROM) before 22 weeks' gestational age (GA) with minimum 2 weeks latency. STUDY DESIGN Single institution, follow-up of retrospectively identified children who were born after PV-PPROM during 2000-2004, and individually matched preterm-born controls. RESULTS Eleven PV-PPROM and matched control children were included at mean age of 10.5 and 10.7 years. Rupture of membranes occurred at mean GA 182 and 276 weeks and birth at 283 and 286 weeks, respectively. Compared to controls, the PV-PPROM group had significantly poorer lung function, findings on echocardiography indicating mild pulmonary hypertension, and lower peak oxygen consumption. Chart reviews suggested more motor difficulties and a tendency towards more problems with learning and attention. CONCLUSION The findings highlight a preterm-born sub-group in need of targeted long-term monitoring and possibly interventions regarding future cardiorespiratory and neurodevelopmental function.

Abstract
Dibutyltin dichloride (DBTC) is an organotin compound used as model for acute and chronic pancreatitis. Oxidative stress is one of the mechanisms of propagation of acinar cell injury in acute pancreatitis. Selenium is an essential cofactor in the antioxidant glutathione peroxidase pathway. Selenium levels are described to be subnormal in patients with acute and chronic pancreatitis. The aim of our studies was to determine the prophylactic effect of Na-selenite [5 mg kg-1 body weight (b.w.) per os (p.o.) 7 days] on the pathogenesis and course of DBTC- induced pancreatitis. Male inbred rats (LEW-1W Charles River) of 150 g body weight were used in this study. Experimental pancreatitis was induced by intravenous administration of 6 mg kg-1 b.w. DBTC in rats. Na-selenite was administered as daily oral dose of 5 mg kg-1 b.w. 7 days before induction of DBTC-pancreatitis. Malondialdehyde (MDA) was measured for monitoring levels of oxidative stress. Elimination of DBTC was reflected as tin concentration in bile and urine. Organ changes were indicated by serum parameters as well as histology. A prophylactic Na-selenite application significantly diminished MDA- and bilirubin concentration in serum, activities of lipase and transaminases as well as organ injuries compared to DBTC- treated rats in the absence of Na-selenite. The prophylactic oral treatment with Na-selenite in the scope of DBTC-induced pancreatitis points to a reduced oxidative stress characterized by diminished MDA serum levels and a milder course of pancreatitis suggesting prophylactic substitution with Na-selenite to probably elicit beneficial effect on the clinical outcome in patients with endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).

Abstract
MeDALL (Mechanisms of the Development of ALLergy; EU FP7-CP-IP; Project No: 261357; 2010-2015) has proposed an innovative approach to develop early indicators for the prediction, diagnosis, prevention and targets for therapy. MeDALL has linked epidemiological, clinical and basic research using a stepwise, large-scale and integrative approach: MeDALL data of precisely phenotyped children followed in 14 birth cohorts spread across Europe were combined with systems biology (omics, IgE measurement using microarrays) and environmental data. Multimorbidity in the same child is more common than expected by chance alone, suggesting that these diseases share causal mechanisms irrespective of IgE sensitization. IgE sensitization should be considered differently in monosensitized and polysensitized individuals. Allergic multimorbidities and IgE polysensitization are often associated with the persistence or severity of allergic diseases. Environmental exposures are relevant for the development of allergy-related diseases. To complement the population-based studies in children, MeDALL included mechanistic experimental animal studies and in vitro studies in humans. The integration of multimorbidities and polysensitization has resulted in a new classification framework of allergic diseases that could help to improve the understanding of genetic and epigenetic mechanisms of allergy as well as to better manage allergic diseases. Ethics and gender were considered. MeDALL has deployed translational activities within the EU agenda.

Abstract
We combined femtosecond (fs) VIS pump-IR probe spectroscopy with fs VIS pump-supercontinuum probe spectroscopy to characterize the photoreaction of the hexacoordinated Al(tpfc-Br8)(py)2 in a comprehensive way. Upon fs excitation at ∼400 nm in the Soret band, the excitation energy relaxes with a time constant of (250 ± 80) fs to the S2 and S1 electronic excited states. This is evident from the rise time of the stimulated emission signal in the visible spectral range. On the same time scale, narrowing of broad infrared signals in the C=C stretching region around 1500 cm(-1) is observed. Energy redistribution processes are visible in the vibrational and electronic dynamics with time constants between ∼2 ps and ∼20 ps. Triplet formation is detected with a time constant of (95 ± 3) ps. This is tracked by the complete loss of stimulated emission. Electronic transition of the emerging triplet absorption band overlaps considerably with the singlet excited state absorption. In contrast, two well separated vibrational marker bands for triplet formation were identified at 1477 cm(-1) and at 1508 cm(-1). These marker bands allow a precise identification of triplet dynamics in corrole systems.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Six years after introduction of a law for advance directives (AD) in 2009, AD are still discussed controversially. For the first time in Germany, this study investigates intensive care physicians' perspectives on implementation of AD, and corresponding experience of ethical issues. METHODS A standardized questionnaire was sent to German hospitals with > 300 beds and anesthesiologist-led intensive care units. The questionnaire was based on results of a previous qualitative study and was intended to be answered by one leading intensive care physician per hospital. RESULTS N = 222/299 (74.2 % response) physicians answered the survey. Despite a number of reported problems regarding the implementation of AD, 70.6 % (n = 154/218) rated AD generally as helpful. 86.5 % (n = 185/214) would prefer a more goal-oriented approach to an intervention-oriented approach to formulate AD. Furthermore 95.9 % (n = 207/216) plead for qualified professional counseling for intensive care topics in AD. Acceptance for interventions that equal termination of treatment can be perceived. Terminal extubation in correspondence with the patient's will is done in 79.4 % (n = 173/218) of hospitals, however 54.8 % (n = 113/206) of the physicians experience terminal extubations as burdening. DISCUSSION Supporting concepts and measures will be necessary in order to prepare valid AD and to effectively improve implementation in intensive care practice.

Abstract
Background Data on the long‐term impact of hydrolyzed formulas on allergies are scarce. Objective To assess the association between early intervention with hydrolyzed formulas in high‐risk children and allergic outcomes in adolescence. Methods GINI trial participants (n = 2252) received one of four formulas in the first four months of life as breastmilk substitute if necessary: partial or extensive whey hydrolyzate (pHF‐W, eHF‐W), extensive casein hydrolyzate (eHF‐C) or standard cow′s milk formula (CMF) as reference. Associations between these formulas and the cumulative incidence and prevalence of parent‐reported physician‐diagnosed asthma, allergic rhinitis (AR) and eczema, as well as spirometric indices and sensitization, were examined using generalized linear models. Results Between 11 and 15 years, the prevalence of asthma was reduced in the eHF‐C group compared to CMF (odds ratio (OR) 0.49, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.26–0.89), which is consistent with the spirometric results. The cumulative incidence of AR was lower in eHF‐C (risk ratio (RR) 0.77, 95% CI 0.59–0.99]) and the AR prevalence in pHF‐W (OR 0.67, 95% CI 0.47–0.95) and eHF‐C (OR 0.59, 95% CI 0.41–0.84). The cumulative incidence of eczema was reduced in pHF‐W (RR 0.75, 95% CI 0.59–0.96) and eHF‐C (RR 0.60, 95% CI 0.46–0.77), as was the eczema prevalence between 11 and 15 years in eHF‐C (OR 0.42, 95% CI 0.23–0.79). No significant effects were found in the eHF‐W group on any manifestation,nor was there an effect on sensitization with any formula. Conclusion In high‐risk children, early intervention using different hydrolyzed formulas has variable preventative effects on asthma, allergic rhinitis and eczema up to adolescence.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the effect of massage therapy on the growth and development of infants of HIV-infected mothers in a low socio-economic community in Cape Town. It was a prospective, randomised, controlled intervention trial that included massage therapy and control groups of HIV-infected mothers and their normal birth weight infants who were enrolled in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) programme. Participants were recruited at the 6-week clinic visit and followed up every 2 weeks until their infants were 9 months of age. Mother-infant pairs in the massage therapy and control groups included 73 and 88 at 6 weeks and 55 and 58 at 9 months, respectively. Mothers in the intervention group were trained to massage their infants for 15 min daily. The socioeconomic status, immunity, relationship with the partner and mental pain of mothers; the infants' dietary intake, anthropometry and development (Griffiths Mental Development Scales); and haematological and iron status of mothers and infants were assessed at baseline and follow-up. Nine infants (5.3%) were HIV-infected on the HIV DNA PCR test at 6 weeks. Despite significantly higher levels of maternal mental pain, infants in the massage therapy compared to control group scored higher in all five of the Griffiths Scales of Mental Development and significantly higher in the mean quotient (p=0.002) and mean percentile (p=0.004) for the hearing and speech scale at 9 months. Based on the mean difference in scores, the massage therapy group showed greater improvement for all five scales compared to the control group. The mean difference in scores was significantly greater for the hearing and speech quotient (21.9 vs. 11.2) (p<0.03) and the general quotient percentile (19.3 vs. 7.7) (p=0.03) in the massage therapy compared to the control group. These scales remained significant when adjusting for the relationship with the partner and maternal mental pain. Both groups had lower scores in the performance scale at 9 months although this was significantly worse in the control compared to the massage therapy group when adjusting for maternal CD4 count, anaemia, relationship with the partner and mental pain. There were no significant differences in the anthropometric measurements between the two groups. In conclusion, based on the Griffiths Scales, massage therapy improved the overall development and had a significant effect on the hearing and speech and general quotient of HIV-exposed infants in this study.

Abstract
Background: Recent identification of a specific role of HSF1 in cancer progression has led to new relevance of HSF1 as both a prognostic and a predictive marker. The role of HSF1 in endometrial cancer has so far been unexplored. Methods: A total of 823 lesions from endometrial carcinoma precursors, primary tumours and metastases were prospectively collected and explored for HSF1 protein expression in relation to established markers for aggressive disease and survival. Transcriptional alterations related to HSF1 protein level were investigated by microarray analysis for 224 freshly frozen samples in parallel. Results: High expression of HSF1 protein in endometrial carcinoma is significantly associated with aggressive disease and poor survival (all P-values ⩽0.02), also among ERα-positive patients presumed to have good prognosis. The HSF1-related gene signatures increase during disease progression and were also found to have prognostic value. Gene expression analyses identified HSP90 inhibition as a potential novel therapeutic approach for cases with high protein expression of HSF1. Conclusions: We demonstrate for the first time in endometrial cancer that high expression of HSF1 and measures for transcriptional activation of HSF1 associate with poor outcome and disease progression. The HSP90 inhibitors are suggested as new targeted therapeutics for patients with high HSF1 levels in tumour in particular.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Concern about weight gain after quitting smoking is often cited as a barrier to smokers making a quit attempt or seeking treatment. AIM To identify whether smokers who are non-treatment seekers (NTS) are more concerned about weight gain and have lower confidence to maintain weight after quitting smoking as compared with treatment-seeking smokers (TS). METHODS Participants were smokers recruited from Penn State Hershey Medical Center and family practice outpatient clinics. A total of 102 NTS and 186 TS, who participated in a smoking cessation trial, completed a survey regarding tobacco use, weight concern and diet. Stepwise logistic regression was used to identify variables associated with treatment seeking, overall and stratified by those who gained and did not gain weight on a previous quit attempt. RESULTS Fifty three per cent of the overall sample (47.1% NTS vs. 56.5% TS, p = 0.127) had gained weight on a prior quit attempt. Among smokers who had gained weight, higher weight gain concern (WGC) and lower confidence in ability to maintain weight were significantly associated with being a NTS after adjusting for other factors. CONCLUSION Among smokers who gained weight on a previous quit attempt, NTS had greater concern about gaining weight and less confidence in their ability to maintain their weight after quitting than treatment seekers. Clinicians can identify smokers for whom WGC may be a barrier to seeking treatment by asking if they gained weight on a previous quit attempt. These smokers should be assured that this issue will be addressed in treatment.

Abstract
The beneficial role of physical exercise on glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus has been confirmed by several controlled trials including both aerobic and resistance exercise protocols. Exercise has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity, lower blood sugar levels, reduce body fat and improve physical fitness. Grade A scientific evidence has been assigned to the effect of regular physical activity on glycemic control for both endurance and resistance exercise.The recommendations for endurance exercise are: aerobic physical activity of moderate intensity (40-60% of VO(2)max or 50-70% of maximum heart rate) for at least 150 min/week and/or at least 90 min/week of vigorous aerobic exercise (> 60% of VO(2)max or > 70% of maximum heart rate). The physical activity should be distributed over at least 3 days/week and with no more than 2 consecutive days without physical activity. The recommendations for resistance exercise are: resistance exercise should be performed at least 3 times a week, including all major muscle groups, progressing to 3 sets of 8-10 repetitions at a weight that cannot be lifted > 8-10 times.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) have experienced a rapid growth in popularity but little is known about how they are used. AIM The aim of this study was to identify the e-cig products used by experienced e-cig users, their pattern of e-cig use and the impact on tobacco use. METHOD Face-to-face survey of 104 experienced e-cig users. RESULTS Of all the e-cig users, 78% had not used any tobacco in the prior 30 days. They had previously smoked an average of 25 cigarettes per day, and had tried to quit smoking an average of nine times before they started using e-cigs. Two-thirds had previously tried to quit smoking using an FDA-approved smoking cessation medication. The majority of the sample had used e-cigs daily for at least a year. Three quarters started using e-cigs with the intention of quitting smoking and almost all felt that the e-cig had helped them to succeed in quitting smoking. Two-thirds used e-cig liquid with a medium to high concentration of nicotine (13 mg +). Only 8% were using the most widely sold types of cigarette-sized e-cigs that are typically powered by a single 3.7 volt battery. Instead most used e-cigs designed to enable the atomizer to more consistently achieve a hotter more intense vapour. CONCLUSION Until we have more evidence on the safety and efficacy of e-cigs for smoking cessation, smokers should be advised to use proven treatments (e.g. counselling and FDA-approved medicines). However, for those who have successfully switched to e-cigs, the priority should be staying off cigarettes, rather than quitting e-cigs.
