Abstract
Worldwide women have increased their participation in STEM, but we are still far from reaching gender parity. Although progress can be seen at the bachelor's and master's level, career advancement of women in research still faces substantial challenges leading to a 'leaky pipeline' phenomenon (i.e., the continuous decrease of women's participation at advanced career stages). Latin America exhibits encouraging rates of women participation in research, but the panorama varies across countries and stages in the academic ladder. This study focuses on women's participation in research in natural sciences in Colombia and investigates career progression, leadership roles, and funding rates by analyzing data on scholarships, grants, rankings, and academic positions. Overall, we found persistent gender imbalances throughout the research ecosystem that were significant using classical statistical analyses. First, although women constitute >50% graduates from bachelors in natural sciences, <40% of researchers in this field are female. Second, women win <30% of research grants, and in turn, their scientific productivity is 2X lower than that of men. Third, because of the less research funding and output women have, their promotion to senior positions in academic and research rankings is slower. In consequence, only ~25% of senior researchers and full professors are women. Fourth, the proportion of women leading research groups and mentoring young scientist in Colombia is <30%. Our study deepens our understanding of gender gaps in STEM research in Colombia, and provides information to design initiatives that effectively target gender disparities by focusing on key areas of intervention, and then gradually building up, rather than tackling structural inequities all at once.

Abstract
Standardizing and translating species names from different databases is key to the successful integration of data sources in biodiversity research. There are numerous taxonomic name-resolution applications that implement increasingly powerful name-cleaning and matching approaches, allowing the user to resolve species relative to multiple backbones simultaneously. Yet there remains no principled approach for combining information across these underlying taxonomic backbones, complicating efforts to combine and merge species lists with inconsistent and conflicting taxonomic information. Here, we present Treemendous, an open-source software package for the R programming environment that integrates taxonomic relationships across four publicly available backbones to improve the name resolution of tree species. By mapping relationships across the backbones, this package can be used to resolve datasets with conflicting and inconsistent taxonomic origins, while ensuring the resulting species are accepted and consistent with a single reference backbone. The user can chain together different functionalities ranging from simple matching to a single backbone, to graph-based iterative matching using synonym-accepted relations across all backbones in the database. In addition, the package allows users to 'translate' one tree species list into another, streamlining the assimilation of new data into preexisting datasets or models. The package provides a flexible workflow depending on the use case, and can either be used as a stand-alone name-resolution package or in conjunction with existing packages as a final step in the name-resolution pipeline. The Treemendous package is fast and easy to use, allowing users to quickly merge different data sources by standardizing their species names according to the regularly updated database. By combining taxonomic information across multiple backbones, the package increases matching rates and minimizes data loss, allowing for more efficient translation of tree species datasets to aid research into forest biodiversity and tree ecology.

Abstract
Type material and additional collections of 11 taxa of Gautieria described in Europe and North Africa have been studied, namely G. dubia, G. graveolens, G. morchelliformis var. globispora, G. morchelliformis var. magnicellaris, G. morchelliformis var. morchelliformis, G. morchelliformis var. stenospora, G. otthii, G. pseudovestita, G. retirugosa, G. trabutii and G. villosa. At the same time, morphological and genetic studies on recent and herbarium collections from several European countries have been carried out. This enabled clarification of sections within Gautieria and differentiation of 28 taxa, of which 21 are new to science. However, the deeper relationships and nomenclature changes related to the phylogenetic position of the genus Gautieria within Gomphaceae will not be addressed in this study because they would require a more complete molecular analysis together with that of related genera, e.g., Gomphus, Turbinellus, and the four subgenera of Ramaria. In addition, a lectotype for G. villosa var. villosa and reference specimens for G. graveolens and G. morchelliformis var. morchelliformis are selected, and the new combination G. morchelliformis var. dubia is proposed. Detailed descriptions, macro- and microphotographs and distribution maps of all taxa are provided, as well as extensive information on their ecology, chorology and phylogeny. Abstract
Monitoring biodiversity change is key to effective conservation policy. While it is difficult to establish in situ biodiversity monitoring programs at broad geographical scales, remote sensing advances allow for near-real time Earth observations that may help with this goal. We combine periodical and freely available remote sensing information describing temperature and precipitation with curated biological information from several groups of animals and plants in the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest to design an indirect remote sensing framework that monitors potential loss and gain of biodiversity in near-real time. Using data from biological collections and information from repeated field inventories, we demonstrate that this framework has the potential to accurately predict trends of biodiversity change for both taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity. The framework identifies areas of potential diversity loss more accurately than areas of species gain, and performs best when applied to broadly distributed groups of animals and plants.

Abstract
BackgroundPatients with rheumatic diseases (RD) have a higher risk of developing infections due to disease and immunosupressor treatment factors1. Biologic disease -modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARD) have been associated with the development of opportunistic infections, nevertheless their impact on severe infections has not been consistent2.ObjectivesTo describe the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of patients with RD on bDMARD treatment with and without infections, using data from the Mexican Adverse Events Registry (BIOBADAMEX), as well as to identify factors associated with the presence of infections.MethodsBIOBADAMEX is a Mexican ongoing cohort of patients using bDMARDs. In this analysis we included all patients registered in Biobadamex from 2016 to 2021. We compared sociodemographic, clinical and treatment characteristics between patients who developed infections with to those who did not. We used descriptive statistics, Chi square and Kruskal Wallis tests to analyze differences between the groups.ResultsA total of 780 patients registered in Biobadamex were included in this study, among them 42 (5%) patients presented infections and 738 (95%) did not. At baseline, patients had a median (IQR) age of 50 (40-58) years and median disease duration of 7 (3-15) years. The most common diagnosis was rheumatoid arthritis with 512 (66%) patients, followed by ankylosing spondylitis in 115 (15%), psoriatic arthritis in 44 (6%), systemic lupus erythematosus in 30 (4%) and idiopathic juvenile arthritis in 27 (3%) patients. Comorbidities were present in 351 (45%) of the patients. Conventional DMARD (cDMARD) were used by 626 (80%) patients, and 290 (37%) used steroids. The most frequently used bDMARDs were adalimumab in 166 (21%) patients, certolizumab in 129 (16%), tocilizumab in 103 (13%) and abatacept 94 (12%).Table 1 shows baseline characteristics in the groups with and without infections. Patients with infections presented more severe adverse events 3 (7%) compared to those who did not 11 (2%), p=0.007, with a complete recovery without sequels. Most common infection site was skin (21%) followed by superior airways (12%). Most common infectious agents were gram negative bacteria. BackgroundRheumatic diseases prevalence and characteristics in Mexico may vary depending on the country´s region1. To acknowledge these differences is needed to develop focused strategies for early diagnosis and treatment2.ObjectivesIdentify the sociodemographic, clinical and treatment characteristics of the rheumatic diseases in the different regions in Mexico using data from the Mexican Adverse Events Registry (BIOBADAMEX).MethodsIn this analysis we included all patients registered from 2016 to 2021. We described the prevalence in the northern region of Mexico (NR), central (CR) and southern region (SR). We compared sociodemographic, clinical and treatment characteristics between these three regions. We used descriptive statistics, Chi square and Kruskal Wallis tests to analyze differences between the groups.ResultsA total of 780 patients were included in this study, 248 patients (32%) were from the NR, 471 (60%) were from the CR and 61 (8%) from the SR. At baseline, patients had a median (IQR) age of 50 (40-58) years and median disease duration of 7 (3-15) years. NR patients had longer disease duration (9.7 years, p <0.001) and SR patients had higher BMI (29, p 0.001). Overall, 351 (45%) had comorbidities. In CR and SR more than the half of the patient had comorbidities, while in NR only 29% (p 0.001).The most common diagnosis was rheumatoid arthritis with 512 (66%) patients, followed by ankylosing spondylitis in 115 (15%), psoriatic arthritis in 44 (6%), systemic lupus erythematosus in 30 (4%) and idiopathic juvenile arthritis in 27 (3%), this proportions were maintained when analyzed by regions. Overall, the most used bDMARDs were adalimumab, certolizumab, tocilizumab and abatacept.At the time of the analysis 238 (36%) had discontinued bDMARDs treatment, 132 (47%) due to lack of response, being this the most frequent cause reported overall, with the highest rate in NR (62%, p <0.001). All NR patients have social security compared to 83% in CR and 79% in SR.ConclusionThere are regional differences between patients with rheumatic diseases registered in Biobadamex. It was remarkable that all patients form NR had social security, which may impact in the access to treatment. There were differences in the treatments between regions. The data from this analysis may be useful to policy makers, pharmaceutical companies and physicians. Abstract
BackgroundDecrease treatment persistence in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients has been associated with several factors, including number of previous biological DMARDs (bDMARDs), female gender and higher disease activity or lower function at baseline [1].ObjectivesDetermine if drug discontinuation of bDMARDs differs by disease activity level at baseline in patients with RA in the Mexican Adverse Events Registry (BIOBADAMEX).MethodsBIOBADAMEX is a Mexican ongoing cohort of patients using bDMARDs. In this analysis we included all patients with RA registered from 2016 to 2021 with at least two assessments. Survival on bDMARDs was estimated using Kaplan-Meier analysis. Predictors of discontinuation, including high disease activity defined as DAS28-ESR>5.1, were investigated by Cox regression analyses.ResultsAmong 528 RA patients in the registry, 302 had at least two assessments. Of patients analyzed, 276 (91%) were women. At baseline, patients had a median (IQR) age of 52.7 (44-60) years old, median disease duration of 9.3 (4-16) months. A total of 142 (47%) had comorbidities, 34 (11%) had more than 2 morbidities. At baseline DAS28-ESR was 4.8 (4-6), 59 (20%) patients had low (DAS28-ESR<=3.2) and 130 (43%) had high disease activity. The most common bDMARDs received at baseline were abatacept 68 (23%), tocilizumab 59 (20%), adalimumab 50 (17%) and certolizumab 41 (14%). At the time of analysis, the median bDMARDs treatment duration was 17.2 (12-27) months. Overall, 130 (43%) patients had discontinued treatment, the most common causes of discontinuation were inefficacy in 64 patients, 15 for remission, 12 for adverse events and 26 for others. Figure 1 shows discontinuation rate curves in patients by disease activity. Cox proportional hazards demonstrated significant difference in bDMARD discontinuation between patients with baseline high disease activity (HR 1.3, 95% CI 1.1-1.7, p=0.03), but not differences were found regarding baseline age (HR 1.0, 95% CI 0.9-1.0, p=0.16), sex (HR 0.9, 95%CI 0.6-1.4), disease duration (HR 1.0, 95%CI 0.9-1.0, p=0.92), smoking (HR 1.2, 95% CI 0.7-2.1, p=0.44), number of comorbidities (HR 1.0, 95%CI 0.9-1.2, p=0.51) or other factors. Abstract
Background:Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the most common autoimmune disease. Older patients treated with biologic DMARDs (bDMARDs) are at a significantly greater risk of adverse effects (AEs) [1]. However, the rate of drug discontinuation because of adverse effects caused by bDMARDs has not differed in elderly compared to younger patients in different registries.Objectives:Determine if drug discontinuation of bDMARDs differs by age in patients with rheumatoid arthritis in the Mexican Adverse Events Registry (BIOBADAMEX).Methods:BIOBADAMEX is a Mexican ongoing cohort of patients using bDMARDs since 2016. In this analysis we included all patients with diagnosis of RA with at least two assessments. Survival on bDMARDs was estimated using Kaplan-Meier analysis. Predictors of discontinuation, including age older than median age in the sample were investigated by Cox regression analyses.Results:Among 743 patients in the registry, 497 had RA diagnosis, from which, 214 had at least two assessments. At baseline, patients had a median (IQR) age of 53.4 (45-61) years old, median disease duration of 10.7 (6-17) months and median DAS28 of 4.7 (3-6). Conventional DMARDS were used by 185 (87%) patients and 94 (44%) patients used corticosteroids. Comorbidities were present in 194 (91%). The most common bDMARDs received at baseline were abatacept 59 (27%), tocilizumab 45(21%), adalimumab 31 (15%) and certolizumab 30 (14%). At the time of analysis, the median bDMARDs treatment duration was 21.0(13-34) months, 128 (59%) had discontinued treatment, 66 for inefficacy, 32 for adverse events and 30 for others. Fig 1 shows discontinuation rate curves in patients younger and older than median age. Cox proportional-hazards demonstrated no significant differences regarding age older than median age (HR 1.1, 95% CI 0.8-1.4, p=0.7), female sex (HR 1.2, 95% CI 0.7-1.9, p=0.44), use of corticosteroids (HR 1.2, 95% CI 0.9-1.6, p=0.20), comorbidities (HR 0.9, 95% 0.6-1.5, p=0.78), DAS28 (HR 0.9, 95% 0.9-1.1, p=0.93) or other factors.Figure 1.Discontinuation rate curves in patients younger and older than median age (< 53.4 and >=53.4 years old)Conclusion:This analysis did not show a role of age on discontinuation of bDMARDs in Mexican RA patients. Abstract
There is not in Argentina publications regarding the presentation of patients with COVID-19 requiring hospitalized and emergency care in vulnerable populations (lower incomes and less education tend at greater risk for poor health status and healthcare access), and it has few reports in developing countries. The objective is to determine whether in the care of vulnerable patients, to succeed against COVID-19, multiple public health tools and interventions will be needed to minimize morbidity and mortality. The study is a prospective cohort investigation of patients with lab-confirmed COVID-19, who required to any of the Health Centers response from April 8, 2020, to August 18, 2020. In Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA), April 8, 2020 the virus was identified in patients hospitalized in the "Southeast Network" (SN), AMBA. SN covering an area of 661 square kilometers, with 1.8 million inhabitants residing in urban, and rural areas. A total of 14 health centers with different levels of care complexity provide care to patients in the region. The information of each patient with COVID-19 evaluated by SN, was incorporated in an Epidemiological Dashboard. The investigation was designed and reported with consideration of observational studies in epidemiology. We describe the hospitals presentation and care of persons who required SN response and were ultimately diagnosed with COVID-19. From April 8, 2020, to August 18, 2020, were included 1495 patients with lab-confirmed COVID-19 in SN. A total of 58% patients were men, and the mean age (SD) was 48.9 (15.59) years. Eighty one percent patients with pre-existing diseases, most frequent hypertension and diabetes, but hypertension, chronic lung disease, and cardiovascular disease presented higher risk. A total of 13% were hospitalized in Intensive Therapy Unit. The mortality of the cohort was 9.77%. Mortality was higher for patients aged 65 or more (OR 5.09), and for those had some pre-existing disease (OR 2.61). Our observations are consistent with reports demonstrating older persons, and those with comorbidities have the highest risk of mortality related to COVID-19. However, unlike other reports from developed or some developing countries, the mortality in our study is lower. This finding may be related to age of our cohort is younger than other published. Also, the health system was able to respond to the demand.

Abstract
Introduction The present work describes the clinical characteristics and interventions to minimize morbidity and mortality in hospitalized patients diagnosed with COVID-19. Methods It is a prospective cohort investigation of patients who received a response from the Health Centers in the southeast region (RS) of the metropolitan area (AMBA) from April 8 to September 30, 2020. A Situation Room was used epidemiological with two monitoring and follow-up boards, one for bed management and the other for patient management. Results During the analyzed period, 2,588 patients with confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis were admitted, 1,943 with suspected COVID-19 pathology, and 1,464 subjects with other pathologies. 55% of the patients were men and the mean age was 51 years. There were 82.8% patients with pre-existing diseases, hypertension and diabetes were the most frequent. 14% were hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit. The mortality of the cohort was 15.05%, mortality was higher for men, with a mean age of 60 years, 92.65% had some pre-existing disease. Conclusion Our cohort is younger than other published works. Older people, men, and people with comorbidities are at increased risk for COVID-19-related mortality. The public health system was able to respond to the demand without collapsing the hospital institutions.

Abstract
Background:Access to biosimilar drugs in Mexico started on 2014. Although biosimilar drugs safety has proved comparability to originator drugs on trials, information about its safety on real-life data is limited.Objectives:To compare safety in terms of adverse events of biosimilar etanercept (BEt) to originator etanercept (OEt) using information from the Mexican Adverse Events Registry (BIOBADAMEX).Methods:BIOBADAMEX is a Mexican cohort that collects the information of biologic and biosimilar drugs used in patients with rheumatic diseases in public and private practice since 2016. Patients enrolled are followed- up yearly. For this study we included patients from 18 to 65 years old who were or are currently in treatment with OEt or BEt and analyzed the frequency of adverse events (AE), the severity and the outcome of these. Baseline time was considered at enrolment to the cohort. We used logistic regression to analyze univariable and multivariable associations.Results:At the time of analysis a total of 119 have received treatment with OEt, 38 with BEt. Mean follow up time was 1.35 years. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) was the most common disease for all the groups followed by ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA). Both groups had similar baseline characteristics (Table 1). AE occurred in 4 (3.4%) patients with OEt and in 6 (15.8%) with BEt (OR 0.2, 95% CI 0.04-0.7). The most frequent AE in OEt group was allergic reaction, (2(2.5%) of patients), and infections were the most frequent AE in BEt group (2 (5.3%)). Of patients with BEt, 2(5.3%) had severe AE compared to none in the OEt (p=0.012). In the multivariable adjusted analysis comparing development of AE vs no AE including BEt, comorbidities and glucocorticoids, we found that use of BEt (OR 4.6, 95%CI 1.1-19.5) and presence of comorbidities (OR 4.6, 95%CI 1.01-20.5), were associated with AE. Abstract
Background:Most autoimmune diseases are more prevalent in women. Symptom severity, disease progression, response to therapy and overall survival differ between males and females with rheumatic diseases.Objectives:To identify the characteristics of autoimmune diseases presentation and treatment between male and female population using information from the Mexican Adverse Events Registry (BIOBADAMEX).Methods:BIOBADAMEX is a Mexican ongoing cohort that collects the information of patients using biologic and biosimilar drugs since 2016. For this study we included all patients enrolled in the registry and compared baseline clinical and disease characteristics, treatment and presence of adverse events between genders. We used logistic regression to analyze univariable associations.Results:A total of 655 participants were analysed, of which 82% were female (Table 1). We found women were older with a median of 53 years compared to 46 years in men (OR 1.02, CI 1.0-1.1). Smoking was higher in men (16%) compared to women (5%), (OR 0.3, CI 0.2-0.6). Women had longer disease duration, 9 years compared to 7 years in men (OR 1, CI 1.0-1.1). Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) was more prevalent in women (OR 2.7, CI 1-6.9), while ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) were more prevalent in men (OR 0.2, CI 0.1-0.4, and OR 0.3, CI 0.1-0.9 respectively). Women had more comorbidities than men (OR 1.8, CI 1.1-2.8) and used steroids more frequently (OR 1.7, CI 1.1-2.7). As expected, the prevalence of RA was higher in women and AS and PsA in men. Overall, women used more steroids than men. An interesting finding was that patients had high disease activity. Abstract
Ecological studies of species pairs showed that biotic interactions promote phenotypic change and eco-evolutionary feedbacks. However, it is unclear how phenotypes respond to synergistic interactions with multiple taxa. We investigate whether interactions with multiple prey species explain spatially structured variation in the skin toxins of the neotropical poison frog Oophaga pumilio. Specifically, we assess how dissimilarity (i.e., beta diversity) of alkaloid-bearing arthropod prey assemblages (68 ant species) and evolutionary divergence between frog populations (from a neutral genetic marker) contribute to frog poison dissimilarity (toxin profiles composed of 230 different lipophilic alkaloids sampled from 934 frogs at 46 sites). We find that models that incorporate spatial turnover in the composition of ant assemblages explain part of the frog alkaloid variation, and we infer unique alkaloid combinations across the range of O. pumilio. Moreover, we find that alkaloid variation increases weakly with the evolutionary divergence between frog populations. Our results pose two hypotheses: First, the distribution of only a few prey species may explain most of the geographic variation in poison frog alkaloids; second, different codistributed prey species may be redundant alkaloid sources. The analytical framework proposed here can be extended to other multitrophic systems, coevolutionary mosaics, microbial assemblages, and ecosystem services.

Abstract
A comprehensive morphological and genetic study of type material and new collections of sequestrate Russulales species formerly belonging to the genera Arcangeliella, Elasmomyces, Gymnomyces, Hydnangium, Hymenogaster, Macowanites, Martellia, Secotium and Zelleromyces is here undertaken, for the purpose of providing a complete taxonomical revision of sequestrate Russulaceae species in the Mediterranean and temperate regions of Europe. As a result, seven distinct taxa in the genus Lactarius and 18 in the genus Russula are identified. Six of them are new species: L. populicola, L. subgiennensis, R. bavarica, R. candidissima, R. hobartiae and R. mediterraneensis, and seven represent new combinations: L. josserandii (≡ Zelleromyces josserandii), L. soehneri (≡ Hydnangium soehneri), R. candida (≡ Hydnangium candidum), R. cerea (≡ Hydnangium cereum), R. messapica var. messapicoides (≡ Macowanites messapicoides), R. meridionalis (≡ Zelleromyces meridionalis) and R. neuhoffii (≡ Hydnangium neuhoffii). Twenty-two of the 25 taxa are illustrated, while descriptions, microscopy images, as well as extensive information on the ecology, chorology and phylogeny for all taxa are provided. A key is further included to facilitate their identification.

Abstract
Males of several animals have intromittent organs and may use these in a communicative context during sexual or intrasexual interactions. In some lizards, hemipenes eversion behavior have been observed, and the aim of this study is to find out whether this behavior is functionally significant under a communicative approach. Here, we investigated the eversion of hemipenes in the Light Blue Lizard (Liolaemus coeruleus Cei and Ortiz-Zapata, 1983) and in the Valley Lizard (Liolaemus quilmes Etheridge, 1993) by filming the response of male focal lizards in different experimental settings: (i) an agonistic context, i.e., with a conspecific male, (ii) a sexual context, i.e., with a conspecific female, and (iii) a control treatment, i.e., without a treatment lizard. In both species, focal lizards showed this behavior only in an agonistic context, with interspecific differences as follows. Liolaemus coeruleus has longer times until eversion and dragging of hemipenes; however, it has shorter time of eversion and exposition of the hemipenes. Liolaemus quilmes has the opposite pattern compared with L. coeruleus. These indicate that eversion of the hemipenes can act as a visual display and as a signal of aggressive behavior towards conspecific rival males. The present study offers a new behavioral perspective on the use of masculine genitalia in lizards.

Abstract
Leishmaniases are neglected tropical diseases exhibiting complex transmission cycles due to the number of parasite species circulating, sand fly species acting as vectors and infected mammals, including humans, which are defined in the New World as accidental hosts. However, current transmission scenarios are changing, and the disease is no longer exclusively related to forested areas but urban transmission foci occur, involving some species of domestic animals as suspected reservoirs. The aim of this study was to determine the transmission cycles in urban environments by evaluating sand fly diversity, detection of Leishmania DNA, and bloodmeal sources through intra and peridomestic collections. The study was carried out in Colombia, in 13 municipalities of Cordoba department, implementing a methodology that could be further used for the evaluation of vector-borne diseases in villages or towns. Our sampling design included 24 houses randomly selected in each of 15 villages distributed in 13 municipalities, which were sampled in two seasons in 2015 and 2016. Sand flies were collected using CDC light traps placed in intra and peridomestic habitats. In addition to the morphological identification, molecular identification through DNA barcodes was also performed. A total of 19,743 sand flies were collected and 13,848 of them (10,268 females and 3,580 males) were used in molecular procedures. Circulation of two known parasite species–Leishmania infantum and Leishmania panamensis was confirmed. Blood source analyses showed that sand flies fed on humans, particularly in the case of the known L. infantum vector, P. evansi; further analyses are advised to evaluate the reservoirs involved in parasite transmission. Our sampling design allowed us to evaluate potential transmission cycles on a department scale, by defining suspected vector species, parasite species present in different municipalities and feeding habits.

Abstract
Background Malaria remains a worldwide public health concern and, in Colombia, despite the efforts to stop malaria transmission, the incidence of cases has increased over the last few years. In this context, it is necessary to evaluate vector diversity, infection rates, and spatial distribution, to better understand disease transmission dynamics. This information may contribute to the planning and development of vector control strategies. Results A total of 778 Anopheles mosquitoes were collected in fifteen localities of Córdoba from August 2015 to October 2016. Six species were identified and overall, Anopheles albimanus was the most widespread and abundant species (83%). Other species of the Nyssorhynchus subgenus were collected, including Anopheles triannulatus (13%), Anopheles nuneztovari (1%), Anopheles argyritarsis (< 1%) and two species belonging to the Anopheles subgenus: Anopheles pseudopunctipennis (3%) and Anopheles neomaculipalpus (< 1%). Four species were found naturally infected with two Plasmodium species: Anopheles nuneztovari was detected naturally infected with Plasmodium falciparum and Anopheles pseudopunctipennis with Plasmodium vivax, whereas An. albimanus and An. triannulatus were found infected with both parasite species and confirmed by nested PCR. Conclusions In general, the obtained results were contrasting with previous studies in terms of the most abundant and widespread collected species, and regarding infection rates, which were higher than those previously reported. A positive relationship between mosquito local abundance at the locality level and human infection at the municipality level was found. Mosquito local abundance and the number of houses with mosquitoes in each village are factors explaining malaria human cases in these villages. The obtained results suggest that other factors related to the apparent variation in malaria eco-epidemiology in northern Colombia, must be identified, to provide health authorities with better decision tools aiming to design control and prevention strategies. Abstract
Elaphomyces ('deer truffles') is one of the most important ectomycorrhizal fungal genera in temperate and subarctic forest ecosystems, but also one of the least documented in public databases. The current systematics are mainly based on macromorphology, and is not significantly different from that proposed by Vittadini (1831). Within the 49 species recognised worldwide, 23 were originally described from Europe and 17 of these were described before the 20th century. Moreover, very recent phylogenetic treatments of the genus are mainly based on a few extra-European species and most common European species are still poorly documented. Based on an extensive taxonomic sampling mainly made in the biogeographically rich Cantabrian area (Spain), complemented with collections from France, Greece, Italy, Norway, Portugal and Sweden, all currently recognized species in Europe have been sequenced at the ITS and 28S of the rDNA. Combined phylogenetic analyses yielded molecular support to sections Elaphomyces and Ceratogaster (here emended), while a third, basal lineage encompasses the sections Malacodermei and Ascoscleroderma as well as the tropical genus Pseudotulostoma. Species limits are discussed and some taxa formerly proposed as genuine species based on morphology and biogeography are re-evaluated as varieties or forms. Spore size and ornamentation, features of the peridial surface, structure of the peridium, and the presence of mycelium patches attached to the peridial surface emerge as the most significant systematic characters. Four new species: E. barrioi, E. quercicola, E. roseolus and E. violaceoniger, one new variety: E. papillatus var. sulphureopallidus, and two new forms: E. granulatus forma pallidosporus and E. anthracinus forma talosporus are introduced, as well as four new combinations in the genus: E. muricatus var. reticulatus, E. muricatus var. variegatus, E. papillatus var. striatosporus and E. morettii var. cantabricus. Lectotypes and epitypes are designated for most recognised species. For systematic purposes, new infrageneric taxa are introduced: E. sect. Ascoscleroderma stat. nov., E. subsect. Sclerodermei stat. nov., E. subsect. Maculati subsect. nov., E. subsect. Muricati subsect. nov., and E. subsect. Papillati subsect. nov. Lastly, E.laevigatus, E. sapidus, E. sulphureopallidus and E. trappei are excluded from the genus and referred to Rhizopogon roseolus, Astraeus sapidus comb. nov., Astraeus hygrometricus and Terfezia trappei comb. nov. (syn.: Terfezia cistophila), respectively.

Abstract
Colombia is the country with the largest number of bird species worldwide, yet its avifauna is seriously threatened by habitat degradation and poaching. We built a DNA barcode library of nearly half of the bird species listed in the CITES appendices for Colombia, thereby constructing a species identification reference that will help in global efforts for controlling illegal species trade. We obtained the COI barcode sequence of 151 species based on 281 samples, representing 46% of CITES bird species registered for Colombia. The species analysed belong to nine families, where Trochilidae and Psittacidae are the most abundant ones. We sequenced for the first time the DNA barcode of 47 species, mainly hummingbirds endemic of the Northern Andes region. We found a correct match between morphological and genetic identification for 86-92% of the species analysed, depending on the cluster analysis performed (BIN, ABGD and TaxonDNA). Additionally, we identified eleven cases of high intraspecific divergence based on K2P genetic distances (up to 14.61%) that could reflect cryptic diversity. In these cases, the specimens were collected in geographically distant sites such as different mountain systems, opposite flanks of the mountain or different elevations. Likewise, we found two cases of possible hybridization and incomplete lineage sorting. This survey constitutes the first attempt to build the DNA barcode library of endangered bird species in Colombia establishing as a reference for management programs of illegal species trade, and providing major insights of phylogeographic structure that can guide future taxonomic research.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Early lymphocyte recovery after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is related to the prevention of serious infections and the clearing of residual tumor cells. METHODS We analyzed the absolute lymphocyte count at 20 (D+20) and 30 (D+30) days after HSCT in 100 patients with malignant hematologic diseases and correlated with the risk of transplant-related mortality, overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), nonrelapsed mortality (NRM), and risk of infection. RESULTS Patients presenting with lymphocyte counts of <300 × 103/μL on D+30 have a 3.76 times greater risk of death in <100 days. Over a medium follow-up of 20 months OS, DFS, and NRM were similar between the groups. CONCLUSION In our group of patients delayed lymphocyte recovery after HSCT was a predictor of early death post-HSCT.

Abstract
Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is caused by the trypanosomatid parasite Leishmania infantum (=Leishmania chagasi), and is epidemiologically relevant due to its wide geographic distribution, the number of annual cases reported and the increase in its co-infection with HIV. Two vector species have been incriminated in the Americas: Lutzomyia longipalpis and Lutzomyia evansi. In Colombia, L. longipalpis is distributed along the Magdalena River Valley while L. evansi is only found in the northern part of the Country. Regarding the epidemiology of the disease, in Colombia the incidence of VL has decreased over the last few years without any intervention being implemented. Additionally, changes in transmission cycles have been reported with urban transmission occurring in the Caribbean Coast. In Europe and North America climate change seems to be driving a latitudinal shift of leishmaniasis transmission. Here, we explored the spatial distribution of the two known vector species of L. infantum in Colombia and projected its future distribution into climate change scenarios to establish the expansion potential of the disease. An updated database including L. longipalpis and L. evansi collection records from Colombia was compiled. Ecological niche models were performed for each species using the Maxent software and 13 Worldclim bioclimatic coverages. Projections were made for the pessimistic CSIRO A2 scenario, which predicts the higher increase in temperature due to non-emission reduction, and the optimistic Hadley B2 Scenario predicting the minimum increase in temperature. The database contained 23 records for L. evansi and 39 records for L. longipalpis, distributed along the Magdalena River Valley and the Caribbean Coast, where the potential distribution areas of both species were also predicted by Maxent. Climate change projections showed a general overall reduction in the spatial distribution of the two vector species, promoting a shift in altitudinal distribution for L. longipalpis and confining L. evansi to certain regions in the Caribbean Coast. Altitudinal shifts have been reported for cutaneous leishmaniasis vectors in Colombia and Peru. Here, we predict the same outcome for VL vectors in Colombia. Changes in spatial distribution patterns could be affecting local abundances due to climatic pressures on vector populations thus reducing the incidence of human cases.

Abstract
The prevalence of antibodies to the protozoan parasites Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum were investigated by the direct agglutination test (DAT) and cELISA, respectively, in 160 roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), 177 sheep and 178 cattle sharing pastures in Galicia (Northwest Spain). The seroprevalence for T. gondii was 13.7% in roe deer, 57% in sheep and 7.3% in cattle. The seroprevalence for N. canimum was 6.8%, 10.1% and 24.1% in roe deer, sheep and cattle, respectively. Statistically significant differences were observed between sheep and the other species for T. gondii and between cattle and the other ruminants for N. caninum. Only 19/515 animals were positive for both, T. gondii and N. caninum. Statistically significant differences were observed among different geographical areas for T. gondii but not for Neospora, seroprevalence being higher in the coastal area lower than in other areas. This study reveals a widespread exposure to T. gondii in Galician ruminants, and therefore, those species, particularly sheep, should be regarded as a potential source of infection for humans.

Abstract
In this study, we have calculated distances between genomes based on our previously developed compositional spectra (CS) analysis. The study was conducted using genomes of 39 species of Eukarya, Eubacteria, and Archaea. Based on CS distances, we produced two different consensus dendrograms for four- and two-letter (purine-pyrimidine) alphabets. A comparison of the obtained structure using purine-pyrimidine alphabet with the standard three-kingdom (3K) scheme reveals substantial similarity. Surprisingly, this is not the case when the same procedure is based on the four-letter alphabet. In this situation, we also found three main clusters-but different from those in the 3K scheme. In particular, one of the clusters includes Eukarya and thermophilic bacteria and a part of the considered Archaea species. We speculate that the key factor in the last classification (based on the A-T-G-C alphabet) is related to ecology: two ecological parameters, temperature and oxygen, distinctly explain the clustering revealed by compositional spectra in the four-letter alphabet. Therefore, we assume that this result reflects two interdependent processes: evolutionary divergence and superimposed ecological convergence of the genomes, albeit another process, horizontal transfer, cannot be excluded as an important contributing factor.

Abstract
We analyzed precursor messenger RNAs (pre-mRNAs) of 12 eukaryotic species. In each species, three groups of highly expressed genes, ribosomal proteins, heat shock proteins, and amino-acyl tRNA synthetases, were compared with a control group (randomly selected genes). The purine-pyrimidine (R-Y) composition of pre-mRNAs of the three targeted gene groups proved to differ significantly from the control. The exons of the three groups tested have higher purine contents and R-tract abundance and lower abundance of Y-tracts compared to the control (R-tract-tract of sequential purines with Rn>or=5; Y-tract-tract of sequential pyrimidines with Yn>or=5). In species widely employing "intron definition" in the splicing process, the Y content of introns of the three targeted groups appeared to be higher compared to the control group. Furthermore, in all examined species, the introns of the targeted genes have a lower abundance of R-tracts compared to the control. We hypothesized that the R-Y composition of the targeted gene groups contributes to high rate and efficiency of both splicing and translation, in addition to the mRNA coding role. This is presumably achieved by (1) reducing the possibility of the formation of secondary structures in the mRNA, (2) using the R-tracts and R-biased sequences as exonic splicing enhancers, (3) lowering the amount of targets for pyrimidine tract binding protein in the exons, and (4) reducing the amount of target sequences for binding of serine/arginine-rich (SR) proteins in the introns, thereby allowing SR proteins to bind to proper (exonic) targets.

Skin biopsies were taken at 0, 6, 12, 48 and 96 h post-infection (h.p.i.). In primary infected animals the penetration of Hypoderma larvae was characterized by moderate inflammatory responses. The pattern of cellular changes in previously infected animals suggested an allergic or rheumatic process, probably as a consequence of the development of a type III hypersensitivity reaction against the second or successive reinfections. Perivascular infiltration with CD3(+) T lymphocytes was marked in infected groups, but especially in previously infected animals, with a significant increase with respect to uninfected controls at 48 h.p.i. B cells remained close to control values during primary infection, while they increased significantly 12 h.p.i. in reinfected animals. IgG(+) plasma cells were also very abundant during secondary infections, with significant differences from primary infected and uninfected animals from 6 h.p.i. onwards. These results suggest that secondary infections allow cellular responses which may be effective in killing some of the entering larvae, resulting in a degree of resistance.

Abstract
We applied genome-wide gene expression analysis to the evolutionary processes of adaptive speciation of the Israeli blind subterranean mole rats of the Spalax ehrenbergi superspecies. The four Israeli allospecies climatically and adaptively radiated into the cooler, mesic northern domain (N) and warmer, xeric southern domain (S). The kidney and brain mRNAs of two N and two S animals were examined through cross-species hybridizations with two types of Affymetrix arrays (mouse and rat) and muscle mRNA of six N and six S animals with spotted cDNA mouse arrays. The initial microarray analysis was hypothesis-free, i.e., conducted without reference to the origin of animals. Principal component analysis revealed that 20-30% of the expression signal variability could be explained by the differentiation of N-S species. Similar N-S effects were obtained for all tissues and types of arrays: two Affymetrix microarrays using probe oligomer signals and the spotted array. Likewise, ANOVA and t test statistics demonstrated significant N-S ecogeographic divergence and region-tissue specificity in gene expression. Analysis of differential gene expression between species corroborates previous results deduced by allozymes and DNA molecular polymorphisms. Functional categories show significant N-S ecologic putative adaptive divergent up-regulation of genes highlighting a higher metabolism in N, and potential adaptive brain activity and kidney urine cycle pathways in S. The present results confirm ecologic-genomic separation of blind mole rats into N and S. Gene expression regulation appears to be central to the evolution of blind mole rats.

Abstract
Several species-specific characteristics of genome organization that are superimposed on its coding aspects were proposed earlier, including genome signature (GS), genome accent, and compositional spectrum (CS). These notions could be considered as representatives of genome dialect (GD). We measured within the Proteobacteria some GD representatives, the relative abundance of dinucleotides or GS, the profiles of occurrence of 10 nucleotide words (CS), and the profiles of occurrence of 20 nucleotide words, using a degenerate two-letter alphabet (purine-pyrimidine compositional spectra [PPCS]). Here, we show that the evolutionary distances between DNA repair and recombination orthologous enzymes (especially those of the nucleotide excision repair system) are highly correlated with PPCS and GS distances. Orthologous proteins involved in structural or metabolic processes (control group) have significantly lower correlations of their evolutionary distances with the PPCS and GS distances. We hypothesize that the high correlation of the evolutionary distances of the DNA repair orthologous enzymes with their GD is a result of the coevolution of the DNA repair enzymes' structures and GDs. Species GDs could be substantially influenced by the function of DNA polymerase I (the bacterial major DNA repair polymerase). This might cause the correlation of species GDs differentiation with evolutionary changes of species DNA polymerase I. Simultaneously, the structures of DNA repair-recombination enzymes might be evolutionarily sensitive and responsive to changes in the structure of their substrate-the DNA (including those that are represented by GD differentiation). We further discuss the rationale and mechanisms of the hypothesized coevolution. We suggest that stress might be an important cause of changes in the repair-recombination genes and the GD and the trigger of the aforementioned coevolution process. Other triggers might be massive horizontal gene transfer and ecological selection.

Abstract
Twelve batches of 100 Cochlicella barbara (Mollusca, Helicidae) were deposited monthly, from January to December in plots (0.5 x 0.5 m) with faeces of sheep containing first-stage larvae of Neostrongylus linearis in order to be naturally infected, and another 12 batches acted as uninfected controls. Every 2 weeks dead molluscs were removed from the plots and three to five specimens were examined to study larval development in the snail. Infected and control snails did not differ in their mortality, which may be associated with the low rate of infection of snails. The highest number of molluscs that were infected and the maximum level of infection were observed in batches deposited in summer months. There was a positive correlation between the percentage of infected snails and temperature. Molluscs harboured higher number of infectious third-stage larvae (L3) from mid-spring to mid-autumn and especially in summer months; thus under these climatic conditions and periods small ruminants are more likely to get infected by N. linearis.

Abstract
The larval development of the cat lungworm Aelurostrongylus abstrusus was studied for the first time in the helicid mollusc Cernuella (Cernuella) virgata, in order to know its performance as intermediate host (I.H.). This snail is very common in the north-west of Spain. First-stage larvae (L1) of A. abstrusus were obtained by the Baermann-Wetzel method from the faeces of a naturally infected cat. Then, 120 specimens of C. (C.) virgata were infected with 500 L1/snail and maintained under laboratory conditions (20+/-2 degrees C). Every 2 days, from day 8 to day 76 post-infection (p.i.), three snails were killed in order to study the larval development of the parasite. Morphological features of the different larval stages were also recorded. The apparent rate of penetration of L1 into the snail foot was 65.5%, but only 4.78% completed their development to the infective stage (L3). The total number of larvae was 49.8+/-28.8 larvae/snail and the average number of L3 was 23.9+/-18.4 L3/snail. The first L2 and L3 were observed on day 12 and day 18 p.i., respectively. From day 52 p.i. onwards, all larvae were at the infective stage in the snail. Considering those results, it was concluded that C. (C.) virgata is a suitable I.H. for A. abstrusus.

Abstract
Bladder carcinoma is the fourth most common cancer in men and the eighth most common cancer among women. Our study is aimed to characterise tumour-associated antigen peptides of transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder (TCC). A DNA micro-array-based differential display analysis of 10 000 genes was carried out, and MAGE-A8 gene expression was detected in the tumour, and not in the normal bladder. High occurrence of MAGE-A8 expression was observed in fresh tumour samples (17 out of 23) and TCC lines (four of eight). The MAGE-A8 protein sequence was screened for HLA-A2.1-binding motifs, six potential peptides were synthesised, and peptides binding to HLA-A2.1 were assured. Immunogenicity and antigenicity of the MAGE-A8 peptides were examined in the HHD system, murine class I MHC knockout mice, transgenic for HLA-A2.1. The MAGE-A8 peptide immunogenicity was examined in three modes of vaccination, delivered intranasally with cholera toxin, injected into the tail base with complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA), or presented directly as loaded onto cell surface HLA-A2.1 molecules. Two peptides, 8.1 and 8.3, induce CTL that kills the T24 TCC line in vitro, and prime human lymphocyte response of healthy donors. These results demonstrate the potential use of the MAGE-A8 peptides for specific immunotherapy of TCC.
