Abstract
Presently, demyelinating diseases have been reported to affect the reproductive life of patients who suffer from them, but the progression of the alterations is unknown, especially in men. To better understand these effects, it is necessary to perform studies in animal models, such as the male taiep rat, which exhibits progressive demyelination of the central nervous system, altered kisspeptin expression at the hypothalamic level, and decreased luteinizing hormone, which could alter sperm quality and testicular diameter. Thus, the objective of the present study was to analyze the diameter of the seminiferous tubules, the sperm motility, and the testosterone levels of 90-day-old male taiep rats. The obtained results indicate that male taiep rats show an increase in testicular size accompanied by an increase in the diameter of the seminiferous tubules of the left testicle. There was also a decrease in progressive motility in sperm samples from the left epididymis of male taiep rats compared to the control group, with no changes in serum testosterone concentration. Therefore, we conclude that male taiep rats with central demyelination show altered testicular diameter and decreased motility in sperm from the left side. This type of studies serves as a basis for proposing possible reproductive strategies to improve the fertility and testicular function of men with demyelinating diseases of the central nervous system.

Abstract
The ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus (VMH) is located in the tuberal region of the hypothalamus and is traditionally considered the satiety center. In obese Zucker rats, which express a mutation in the leptin receptor gene and exhibit obesity from the first weeks of life, the morphology of VMH neurons is unknown. In the present study, we found that the dendritic length of VMH neurons in obese Zucker rats was significantly shorter than that in Long Evans rats. This finding allows us to suggest that obese Zucker rats exhibit both neuronal metabolic alterations related to leptin and a reduction in the flow of information within the neuronal circuits in which the VMH nucleus participates to regulate foraging.

Abstract
Hyperactivity in the sympathetic nervous system has been shown to be related to the development of ovarian pathologies. In addition, obesity has been found to be associated with multiple reproductive anomalies and is considered a chronic stress condition of low intensity with changes in the peripheral sympathetic activity. Therefore, in the present study, we aimed to evaluate if the information reaching the ovaries through the superior ovarian nerve (SON) modifies the ovarian function of Zucker fatty rats. We performed a unilateral section of the SON at 32 days of age and autopsies were carried out on the day of the first vaginal estrus. The results showed that fatty animals do not ovulate on the day of the first vaginal estrus and exhibit an increase in catecholaminergic fibers and the presence of precystic structures in the ovaries, without changes in the onset of puberty or in the secretion of ovarian and hypophyseal hormones. We also found that the section of the right SON resulted in ovulation on the day of the first vaginal estrus, which was accompanied by a decrease in ovarian noradrenaline content. The section of the left SON caused a delay in puberty without changes in the rest of the parameters. These results provide functional evidence that the peripheral sympathetic innervation participates in the regulation of ovarian functions in an animal model of genetic obesity.

Abstract
AIMS In the cyclic rat in estrus, the vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) has an impact on ovarian function, which depends on the endocrine status of the animal. In this work, we aimed to clarify the participation of VIP in the pathophysiological condition of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) using a model of PCOS induced by estradiol valerate (EV-PCOS) in rats. MAIN METHODS In the cyclic rat in estrus and in the EV-PCOS model, we analyzed the acute effects of blocking VIP receptors with the use of an antagonist (Ant-VIP) injected into the left or right ovarian bursa on the steroidogenic response and ovarian catecholamine levels. KEY FINDINGS In the cyclic animal in estrus, the treatment with Ant-VIP in the left ovarian bursa resulted in a reduction in testosterone serum levels and in ovarian levels of dopamine and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC), without changes in 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl (MHPG) and norepinephrine (NE). When the treatment was applied on the right side, only MHPG levels increased. In the EV-PCOS model, the treatment with Ant-VIP in the left ovarian bursa increased testosterone, estradiol, MHPG, and NE levels. When the treatment was performed on the right side, progesterone levels decreased and estradiol increased, without changes in ovarian catecholamines. SIGNIFICANCE The binding of VIP to its receptors differentially regulates steroidogenesis in the cyclic animal in estrus and in the EV-PCOS model. The blocking of VIP signaling produces changes in ovarian catecholamines.

Abstract
Yawning is a stereotyped behavioral pattern characterized by wide opening of the mouth associated with deep inspiration followed by short expiration. All vertebrate species yawn, but with low frequencies. We obtained two sublines of Sprague–Dawley (SD) rats by a strict inbreeding process: one with a high-yawning frequency (HY) of 20 yawns/h, which is one order of magnitude higher with respect to the low-yawning frequency (LY) subline, with 2 yawns/h. Outbred SD rats had a yawning frequency of 1 yawn/h. HY dams had a different organization of maternal care with respect to that displayed by LY and SD dams because HY dams constructed lower quality nests and had more re-retrieving and atypical retrieving. The aim of this study was to analyze the changes in maternal care using in- and cross-fostering between the sublines and SD dams and to measure spontaneous and dopaminergic-induced yawning, penile erections, grooming and scratching bouts. We also measured the expression of dopamine D2 receptors in the striatum using Western blot analysis. Our results showed that HY male rats reared by SD or LY dams did not significantly differ in yawning frequencies with respect to HY male rats reared by mothers of their own phenotype. Maternal care did not differ between sublines and SD dams independent of the litter they reared. However, LY rats reared by HY dams showed a significant increase in the number of spontaneous penile erections. Importantly, in-fostered HY male rats had the highest number of yawns induced by systemic administration of (−)-quinpirole supporting that higher maternal care display can influence the frequency of dopaminergic-induced yawning. In fact HY male rats in all conditions yawned more than did LY and SD male rats independent of the dam that raised them supporting a strong influence of genetic background. However SD male rats raised by LY dams showed significantly increased the dopamine D2 receptor expression. In conclusion, maternal care and the environmental nest conditions during the lactation period did not change the phenotypic characteristics of the yawning sublines supporting that their genetic background is fundamental for the expression of spontaneous or dopaminergic-induced yawning.

Abstract
This paper describes the results obtained using a simulated test for administration of activity in nuclear medicine between 2002 and 2004. Measurements in the radionuclide calibrator are made during the different stages of the procedure. The test attempts to obtain supplementary information on the quality of the measurement, with the aim of evaluating in a more complete way the accuracy of the administered activity value compared with the prescribed one. The participants' performance has been assessed by means of a statistical analysis of the reported data. Dependences between several attributes of the simulated administration tests results are discussed. Specifically, the proportion of satisfactory results in the 2003-2004 period was found to be higher than in 2002. It reveals an improvement of the activity administration in the Cuban nuclear medicine departments since 2003.

Abstract
A national program of ongoing comparisons for assaying gamma-emitting radiopharmaceuticals for amount of radioactivity using radionuclide calibrators was begun in 2000. Nuclides of the most wide-spread use in Cuban nuclear medicine, 131I, 201Tl and (99m)Tc, as well as two measurement geometries, glass vials and plastic syringes, were employed. In this paper, the participants' performance is assessed by mean of a statistical analysis of the reported data. Performance tables have been obtained and a chi2 statistic is calculated from observed and expected frequencies, with the aim of testing the hypothesis about the independence of some characteristics of the comparison results, at a significance level alpha=0.05. The proportion of satisfactory results in the years 2002-2004 were found to be at the same level, but higher than in 2000. It reveals an improvement of the measurement quality since 2002. The causes of improvement were investigated using the statistical treatment of several data available as supplementary information.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the pathways of calcium influx routes in non-stimulated cerebellar granule neurones by use of standard microspectrofluorimetric techniques. Repetitive application of Ca2+-free solutions for various time intervals induced decreases of resting cytosolic free Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) which were followed, on Ca2+ readmission, by a full recovery, always to the initial resting [Ca2+]i levels. Use of drugs to deplete calcium stores (thapsigargin, alone or combined with low levels of ionomycin) did not cause release of Ca2+ from the intracellular stores nor enhanced the activity of the Ca2+ entry pathway. This influx was mainly independent of voltage operated calcium channels, since both L-type channel blockers (nitrendipine) and the hyperpolarizing agent pinacidil (a K+-channel opener) were without effect. Contribution from glutamate receptors to this influx was eliminated since a combination of blockers of NMDA and AMPA glutamate receptors (NBQX and D-AP5) did not affect the properties of the Ca2+ response. The Ca2+ leak pathway was sensitive to micromolar levels of lanthanum and gadolinium, and to the compound 2-APB, features shared by several channels of the TRP superfamily. In summary, our results show the presence of a Ca2+ permeable pathway, active and patent in resting conditions in cerebellar granule neurones, and which is different from the voltage-operated calcium channels and not operated by depletion of the stores.

Abstract
The correct administration to a patient of the prescribed activity of a radiopharmaceutical is an important factor to ensure the confidence in the diagnosis or the therapeutic efficiency, while at the same time keeping the unnecessary human exposure as low as possible. Comparisons of activity measurements for 131I, 201Tl and 99mTc with radionuclide calibrators were organized the first time in Cuba during 2002 with the aim of obtaining information about the quality of administration of radiopharmaceuticals. Ten Cuban nuclear medicine departments and the laboratories involved in the production of these kinds of compounds participated in the comparison runs. The results presented in this paper facilitated the identification of several problems and initiated corrective actions. In addition, they indicate the necessity of establishing Quality Systems in nuclear medicine in Cuba.

Abstract
A simplified procedure for the standardization of gamma reference sources, for use in quality assurance of activity measurements during production and application of radiopharmaceuticals in Cuban nuclear medicine laboratories, is described. The method is based on the reliable achievement of consistent measurements by both gamma-spectrometry and ionization chamber techniques, and allows to obtain reference sources with uncertainties lower than 2%. Experimental setup, validation procedure and typical results obtained for 99mTc, 131I, 201Tl and 153Sm are described and discussed. The method will serve also as a secondary reference system for radioactivity measurements in the country.
