Abstract
Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) or exercise training (ExT) is beneficial to hypertension, but their combined effects remain unknown. In this study, lentivirus containing enhanced green fluorescent protein (eGFP) and ACE2 were microinjected into the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of young male spontaneous hypertensive rats (SHRs), and SHRs were assigned into 5 groups: sedentary (SHR), SHR-ExT, SHR-eGFP, ACE2 gene (SHR-ACE2), ACE2 gene combined with ExT (SHR-ACE2-ExT). Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats were used as a control. ACE2 gene or ExT significantly delayed the elevation of blood pressure, the combined effect prevented the development and progression of prehypertension. Either ACE2 over-expression or ExT improved arterial baroreflex sensitivity (BRS), while combined effect normalized BRS in SHR. Compared with SHR, SHR-ACE2 and SHR-ExT displayed a significantly higher level in ACE2 protein, but had lower plasma norepinephrine (NE) and angiotensin II (AngII) as well as angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1) protein expression in the PVN. SHR-ACE2-ExT showed the largest decrease in AngII and AT1 protein expression. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) level and NADPH oxidase (NOX2 and NOX4) protein expression in PVN were also decreased in SHR-ACE2-ExT group than in SHR-ACE2 and SHR-ExT groups. It was concluded that the combined effect has effectively prevented prehypertension progression and baroreflex dysfunction in SHR, which is associated with the reduction in AngII/AT1 axis function and oxidative stress in the PVN.

Abstract
The shuttling of soluble lithium polysulfides between the electrodes leads to serious capacity fading and excess use of electrolyte, which severely bottlenecks practical use of Li-S batteries. Here, selective catalysis is proposed as a fundamental remedy for the consecutive solid-liquid-solid sulfur redox reactions. The proof-of-concept Indium (In)-based catalyst targetedly decelerates the solid-liquid conversion, dissolution of elemental sulfur to polysulfides, while accelerates the liquid-solid conversion, deposition of polysulfides into insoluble Li2 S, which basically reduces accumulation of polysulfides in electrolyte, finally inhibiting the shuttle effect. The selective catalysis is revealed, experimentally and theoretically, by changes of activation energies and kinetic currents, modified reaction pathway together with the probed dynamically changing catalyst (LiInS2 catalyst), and gradual deactivation of the In-based catalyst. The In-based battery works steadily over 1000 cycles at 4.0 C and yields an initial areal capacity up to 9.4 mAh cm-2 with a sulfur loading of ≈9.0 mg cm-2 .

Abstract
In this study, novel Fe3C-porous carbon composites (Fe3C-C) were prepared via the pyrolysis of Fe2O3 loaded MOF-74(Zn), which could integrate both strong adsorption properties and excellent peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activating performance for the removal of bisphenol A (BPA) in water. Results indicated that the composite obtained at 1000 °C (Fe3C-C1000) exhibited optimal catalytic capability. Specifically, 0.1 mM BPA could be completely removed by 0.1 g/L Fe3C-C1000 within 10 min after the adsorption enrichment. Afterwards, the mechanism of Fe3C-C/PMS system was unveiled based on quenching tests, electron spin resonance analysis, electrochemical analysis, PMS consumption detection and solvent exchange (H2O to D2O) test. The BPA degradation pathways were also analyzed through identifying its decomposition intermediates. Results showed that the Fe3C and porous carbon constituents could activate PMS via radical and non-radical mechanisms respectively, and BPA was readily degraded through both pathways. Additionally, it was found that the Fe3C-C1000/PMS system could maintain conspicuous catalytic performance in a variety of complicated water matrices with wide pH application range and long-time use stability. This study suggests a new insight for the design and development of novel catalyst which can be used for the removal of refractory organic contaminants with high concentrations in water media.

Abstract
UV/sulfite systems with oxygen have recently been considered as advanced oxidation processes in view of the participation of oxysulfur radicals. However, the contribution of •OH and the efficiency of destructing emerging contaminants (ECs) in water remain largely unclear. Here, the UV/S(IV) process was applied with natural reoxygenation to degrade two typical ECs, diethyl phthalate (DEP) and bisphenol A (BPA) showing different properties. Solution pH played the key role in determining the reactive species, and both DEP and BPA were more favorably degraded at more alkaline conditions with higher utilization efficiency of SO32-. Specifically, the H•, O2•-, •OH and SO3•- were identified at acidic condition, but the amount of •OH accumulated significantly with the elevation of pH. Competitive quenching experiments showed that eaq- and •OH dominated the degradation of DEP and BPA at alkaline condition, respectively. Besides, DEP showed higher quantum efficiency for the indirect photolysis and mineralization degree than that of BPA at pH 9.2 mainly due to the direct use of the primary photoproduct. The possible transformation mechanisms of S(IV) and mineralization routes of both pollutants were proposed. This study may provide new insights into the mechanisms involved in UV/S(IV) process and a promising alternative for efficient removal of ECs in water.

Abstract
The verification of exposure to nerve agents is a serious challenge, especially in cases of soman (GD) poisoning. Protein adducts are reliable biomarkers, that provide forensic information and evidence during incidents of terrorism or sporadic poisoning. Mass spectrometry, coupled with a proteomics approach, was established for the forensic analysis of GD-based protein adducts. The fragmentation pathways of GD-based protein adducts were investigated for the first time using electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry. Three abundant natural loss product ions, [M+2H-54]2+ (loss of two carbon cations), [M+2H-72]2+ (loss of tert-butyl and methyl moieties), and [M+2H-84]2+ (loss of the pinacolyl moieties), were observed in each of the GD-labeled adducts, and the product ions were independent of protein structure and exposure route. A unique mechanism for the formation of product ions involving GD-protein adducts is proposed here. These findings support the development of a simple and precise forensic analysis technique to rapidly verify GD poisoning using these three GD-related product ions.

Abstract
Preserving the integrity of carbon fibers when recycling carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRPs) has been unfeasible due to the harsh reaction conditions required to remove epoxy resin matrixes, which adversely affect the properties of carbon fibers. We establish a practicable and environmentally friendly reclamation strategy for carbon fibers. Carbon fibers are recycled from waste CFRPs by an electrochemical catalytic reaction with the assistance of phosphotungstic acid (PA), which promotes the depolymerization of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A/ethylenediamine (DGEBA/EDA) epoxy resin. The removal rate, mechanical strength, and microstructure of the recycled carbon fibers are analyzed to explore the mechanism of the electrochemical treatment. The influence of three factors—current density, PA concentration, and reaction time—are studied via an orthogonal method. Range analysis and variance analysis are conducted to investigate the significance of the factors. The optimal conditions are determined accordingly. The underlying CFRP degradation mechanism is also investigated.

Abstract
Background: Both hepatitis B (HB) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are related to metabolic syndrome (MetS); however, this relationship remains controversial. In this study, we determined the effects of NAFLD and HB infection on the risk of MetS among elderly individuals. Methods: In total, 24,500 individuals aged >65 years were enrolled; they were classified into four groups: normal individuals (N), patients with only HB infection without abnormal echogenicity (HB-alone), patients with only abnormal echogenicity or fatty liver alone (FL-alone), and patients with both HB infection and abnormal echogenicity (HB-FL). Results: After adjustment for age, compared with group N, men and women with NAFLD (FL-alone and HB-FL) had a significantly higher risk of MetS, whereas no significant difference was observed in the incidence of MetS between groups HB-alone and N. However, group HB-FL had a lower risk of MetS than did group FL-alone. HB infection (HB-alone and HB-FL) was associated with a lower risk of high triglycerides (TGs) and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) than HB infection absence (groups N and FL-alone) in men and women. Lower risk of TG derangement was observed in group HB-alone than in group N. In addition, both men and women in group HB-FL had a lower risk of TG and FPG abnormalities than in group FL-alone, whereas a decrease in incidence of high waist circumference and blood pressure was observed only in men. Conclusion: HB infection protects against MetS development, only in patients with HB infection and NAFLD, but not in normal individuals. Additional studies are warranted to clarify the pathogenesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Glucose effectiveness (GE) is the capacity of glucose to increase its own uptake and to maintain endogenous hepatic glucose output under basal insulin levels. In addition to decreased insulin sensitivity (IS) and impaired insulin secretion, GE plays a critical role in glucose balance in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). In the study, we developed an equation for predicting GE. METHODS We enrolled 227 participants with glucose tolerances ranging from normal glucose tolerance to diabetes. Of the participants, 75% (171) participants were randomly assigned to the study group, whose data were used to construct the equation for estimating GE. The remaining 56 participants comprised the validation group. All participants underwent a frequently sampled intravenous glucose tolerance test; IS, GE, and the acute insulin response after the glucose load were determined. RESULTS Age, triglyceride (TG), and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) were independently correlated with GE and selected for inclusion in multiple linear regression analysis. We constructed the following equation: GE = (29.196 - 0.103 × age - 2.722 × TG - 0.592 × FPG) × 10-3. Using this same equation, we also calculated the GE of the validation group. The calculated GE was significantly correlated with the measured GE (r = 0.430, P = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Using the equation based on routine measurements enabled the GE to be predicted with acceptable accuracy (r = 0.430). This method of predicting GE may aid clinicians in further understanding the underlying pathological mechanisms of T2DM.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the expression of transcription factors snail and slug in epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT) of human lens epithelial cells (HLEC) induced by transforming growth factor-β2 (TGF-β2). METHODS Experimental research. HLEC were treated with different concentrations of TGF-β2 (1.0 and 10.0 μg/L) for different time. The morphological changes were observed under inverted microscope. The expression and cellular localization of snail and slug were evaluated by immunofluorescence. Expressions of snail, slug, E-Cadherin and α-SMA were further determined by Western blot analysis. Single factor analysis of variance, rank sum test and Pearson correlation were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS Cultured HLEC were polygonal monolayer cells with tight intercellular adhesion closely and patchy distribution. After treatment of different doses of TGF-β2 for 24 h, HLEC became isolated, exhibited long spindle-like shape as fibroblastic phenotype. The immunofluorescence staining indicated that snail and slug were localized in the nuclei. The expressions of snail and slug appeared to be positive correlative to TGF-β2 dose (snail protein expression: 0.74±0.16, 1.13±0.03, 1.54±0.18 and slug protein expression: 1.96±0.02, 3.12±0.09, 4.07±0.12 in HLEC treated with 0.1, 1.0 and 10 μg/L TGF-β2 respectively) (χ(2)=9.62,P=0.022;F=241.10,P<0.01). In addition, the expression of α-SMA and E-Cadherin showed the similar form (α-SMA protein expression: 0.87±0.04, 1.42±0.11, 2.17±0.36 and E-Cadherin protein expression: 2.50±0.36, 1.65±0.32, 0.41±0.14 in HLEC treated with 0.1, 1.0 and 10.0 μg/L TGF-β2 respectively) (χ(2)=9.97,P=0.019;F=19.99,P<0.01). All Pearson correlation coefficient were close to 1. The expression of snail and slug in HLEC were also increased with extending duration of TGF-β2 (1.0 μg/L). The expression levels of both proteins were modestly up-regulated at 8 hours, robustly increased at 24 h, reached peak at 48h and began to decline at 72 h (snail protein expression: 0.90±0.13, 1.43±0.14, 1.96±0.27, 1.57±0.16 and slug protein expression: 0.91±0.36, 1.24±0.16, 2.44±0.26, 1.43±0.16 in HLEC treated with 1.0 μg/L TGF-β2 for 8 h, 24 h, 48 h and 72 h respectively) (F=12.49,P=0.001;F=14.03,P<0.01). Abstract
BACKGROUND Metabolic syndrome (MetS) has an important implication from a preventive medicine perspective as early recognition and intervention will reduce associated mortality and morbidity. To better identify patients at risk for developing MetS and cardiovascular disease, we conduct a combined cross-sectional and longitudinal study to shed light on the elevated white blood cell (WBC) level in elderly. METHODS A total of 10,463 subjects were eligible for analysis. In the first stage of study, subjects were enrolled in the cross-sectional study to find out not only the correlation between WBC and MetS but also the optimal cut-off value of WBC with higher chances to have MetS. In the second stage of current study, subjects with MetS at baseline were excluded from the same study group, and performed a median 6.8-year longitudinal study to validate the optimal cut-off value of WBC predicting MetS. RESULTS WBC is significantly higher in the group with than without MetS in both genders. All MetS components were associated with WBC in multivariate analysis except diastolic blood pressure and fasting plasma glucose. In the longitudinal study, WBC showed to be a good predictor of MetS in both genders. CONCLUSION WBC is a good marker to identify the high risk subjects having MetS in the current status or in the future. Elderly with a higher WBC and without any underlying chronic diseases should receive more attention on the potential to develop MetS.

Abstract
Aims/Introduction How to measure insulin resistance (IR) accurately and conveniently is a critical issue for both clinical practice and research. In the present study, we tried to modify the β‐cell function, insulin sensitivity, and glucose tolerance test (BIGTT) in patients with normal glucose tolerance (NGT) and abnormal glucose tolerance (AGT) by oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) components. Materials and Methods There were 327 participants enrolled and divided into NGT or AGT. Data from 75% of the participants were used to build the models, and the remaining 25% were used for external validation. Steady‐state plasma glucose (SSPG) concentration derived from the insulin suppression test was regarded as the standard measurement for IR. Five models were built from multiple regression: model 1 (MetS model with sex, age and MetS components); model 2 (simple OGTT model with sex, age, plasma glucose, and insulin concentrations at 0 and 120 min during OGTT); model 3 (full OGTT model with sex, age, and plasma glucose and insulin concentrations at 0, 30, 60, 90, 120, and 180 min during OGTT); model 4 (simple combined model): model 1 and model 2; and model 5 (full model): model 1 and 3. Results In general, our models had higher r2 compared with surrogates derived from OGTT, such as homeostasis model assessment‐insulin resistance and quantitative insulin sensitivity check index. Among them, model 5 had the highest r2 (0.505 in NGT, 0.556 in AGT, respectively). Conclusions Our modified BIGTT models proved to be accurate and easy methods for estimating IR, and can be used in clinical practice and research.

Abstract
The major contributors to the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes are impaired insulin action and insulin secretion, including second phase insulin secretion (2nd ISEC). This study aimed to compare surrogates derived from the mixed meal tolerance test (MTT) with 2nd ISEC derived from modified low-dose graded glucose infusion (M-LDGGI) in patients with type 2 diabetes. We were subsequently able to decide which surrogate would be performed easily and accurately. Twenty type 2 diabetes patients were enrolled. They received both MTT and M-LDGGI. The standardized MTT meals were provided at 8:00 A.M. and 12:00 P.M. The M-LDGGI was a simplified version of the Polonsky method; only two 80-min stages of glucose infusion (2 and 6 mg/kg/min) were given. The slopes of the insulin to glucose curve during the test were regarded as the 2nd ISEC. First, we used the area under the insulin curve (AUC(IN)) during MTT to quantify the 2nd ISEC. The best correlated AUC(IN) was from 60-240 min. Second, the slopes between any two time points of the plasma insulin to glucose level (SLOPE(I/G)) were also assessed. The time period best correlated with 2nd ISEC was from 0-120 min (SLOPE₀₋₁₂₀). Finally, the insulin-to-glucose ratio (IGr) of each time point was used to estimate the 2nd ISEC, and the best correlation was observed at 180 min. In conclusion, estimating 2nd ISEC surrogates derived from MTT proved to be possible. The most accurate surrogate is the SLOPE₀₋₁₂₀, while IG(r180) is another less precise but more convenient method.

Abstract
The bolus delivery method is designed to deliver a dose to the desired location in the lung, and it has the advantage of fewer side effects and a more efficient way of delivery. Based upon the lung deposition model developed for continuously inhaling aerosols of constant concentration, a mathematical model of aerosol bolus deposition is proposed. The calculated results show that the recovery depends on the bolus penetration depth, flow rate, particle size, breath holding time and bolus volume. Three sets of published experimental data with different controlling factors (particle size, flow rate and breath holding time) are adopted to make the quantitative comparisons with the calculated results. The predictions and data for the low intrinsic motion particles (∼1 μm) have good agreement, as do the coarse particles in the shallow airways region. For females, the recovery was found to be consistently lower than that for males.

Abstract
This study uses the Delphi method in interviewing experts to identify critical risks in the development of assistive devices. Critical risks included product planning, technology development, production, performance, schedule management, and cost management, comprising 26 risk factors in 6 constructs. This study determined which factors were of high importance, finding a total of 7 market analysis errors. Mind mapping was used to create a knowledge map; and layer expansion was used to understand risk distribution to facilitate risk mitigation and monitoring. Organizational risk strategies could be developed to reduce risk and maintain stability while achieving the objective of developing new products.

Abstract
Thirty-two pregnant adult LACA mice were randomly assigned to one of five exposure groups: control, 38 degrees C, 42 degrees C, irradiation, and 42 degrees C + irradiation. Animals were exposed on gestation day 9 to either 38 degrees C waterbath for 5 min, 42 degrees C waterbath for 5 min, treatment with 0.5 Gy of 60Co gamma irradiation, or pretreatment at 42 degrees C waterbath for 5 min following by 0.5 Gy of 60CO gamma irradiation. On postnatal day 7, litters were reduced to a maximum of eight pups per litter, with equal members of male and female offspring whenever possible. A total of 216 pups were observed for the age of acquisition of four physiological landmarks (pinna detachment, incisor eruption, eye opening, testes descent), six developmental reflexes (surface righting, cliff avoidance, auditory startle, air righting, visual placing, hindlimb splaying), and examination of learning and memory function. These studies, at threshold exposure levels to hyperthermia and ionizing radiation, indicate there is no consistent significant additional postnatal effect when pregnant mice are exposed to both of these agents. These studies are important for our understanding of the relative long-range effects of prenatal exposure to hyperthermia and acute dose irradiation early in gestation on neurobehavioral teratogenesis.
