The Acute Effects of Ischemic Preconditioning on Short-Duration Cycling: A Randomized Crossover Study

There is recent interest from coaches and athletes regarding IPC as an effective way to generate better competitive outcomes. Regarding cycling specifically, the impact of IPC remains unclear. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of IPC treatment for improving athletic performance during short-duration cycling. After the exclusion and inclusion criteria, there were 11 volunteers for the 3-minute cycling TT and 13 volunteers for the 6-minute cycling TT. All volunteers were competitive athletes of aerobic sports. The IPC treatment consisted of three alternating cycles of 5 minutes of 100% occlusion followed by 5 minutes of reperfusion to each leg. The sham treatment consisted of three alternating cycles of 1 minute of 100% occlusion followed by 1 minute of reperfusion to each leg. The main finding was that IPC significantly improved (p<0.05) power output during 3-minute (4.22%) and 6-minute (2.29%) cycling TT relative to a sham. Additionally, about one-third of our participants required a tourniquet pressure higher than 220 mmHg to achieve 100% occlusion. These findings indicate ischemic preconditioning, administered bilaterally as three rounds of 5 minutes of total occlusion and ensuing reperfusion 20 minutes before a cycling TT, significantly enhanced average power output.

Outpatient frozen sections by telepathology in a Veterans Administration medical center

A relatively simple telepathology system is described for evaluating the margins of excision of cutaneous basal and squamous carcinomas. The system uses a microscope with a built-in television camera, but no eyepieces. The image is projected onto an adjacent monitor and transmitted by T1 line at 768 Kbs to a remote, large screen monitor. The microscope is operated by the surgeon under the telephone direction of the pathologist at the remote site. In a series of 66 cases involving more than 400 individual tissue blocks, we have had only 2 cases with false-negative interpretations and 2 in which the block was not fully displayed on the frozen section. In 15 cases, 1 or more surgical margins were positive, and the surgeon proceeded to excise additional tissue. Our success is attributed to dedicated involvement by the surgeon, very high-quality frozen sections, and the experience of the pathologist.

The importance of intelligence in western societies

There are many different questions about intelligence that easily become confused. They concern its measurement, its psychological basis (if any), its heritability and its relevance to human group differences. Even a discussion of the importance of intelligence could range widely. (1) The evolution of intelligence might consider what selection pressures generate and maintain the higher levels of intelligence that humans are generally thought to possess. (2) The persistence of individual differences in human intelligence could consider whether such differences serve some ‘group’ function in establishing clear bases for social hierarchy: individuals might differ just because intelligence is irrelevant to fertility under conditions of social hierarchy. Or the differences might be temporary, because Western social hierarchies depend on intelligence differences that they will soon undermine. (3) Is intelligence an explanatory concept in psychology? Or must attribution of scholastic or other successes to ‘intelligence’ always yield to further analyses that somehow break down intelligence into hypothetical ‘components’? (4) Educational relevance might be the issue: is it important to take intelligence differences into account when deciding on how to educate children? (5) Or the concern might be with democratic sentiment and the importance people attach to intelligence for themselves and in their spouses and children.
