A Novel Simple Approach to Material Parameters from Commonly Accessible Rheometer Data

When characterizing the viscoelastic properties of polymers, shear rheological measurements are commonly the method of choice. These properties are known to affect extrusion and nozzle-based processes such as fiber melt spinning, cast film extrusion and 3D-printing. However, an adequate characterization of shear thinning polymers can be challenging and still insufficient to not only describe but predict process relevant influences. Furthermore, the evaluation of rheological model systems in literature is mostly based on stress–relaxation experiments, which are rarely available for various polymeric materials. Therefore, a simple approach is presented, that can be used to evaluate and benchmark a wide range of rheological model systems based on commonly accessible frequency sweep data. The approach is validated by analyzing alginate PH176 solutions of various concentrations, a thermoplastic poly-urethane (TPU) Elastollan 1180A melt, the liquid silicon rubber Elastosil 7670 and a polycaprolactone (PCL) fiber-alginate composite system. The used rheological model systems, consisting of simple springs and dashpots, are suitable for the description of complex, viscoelastic material properties that can be observed for polymer solutions and gel-like systems. After revealing a suitable model system for describing those material properties, the determination and evaluation of relevant model parameters can take place. We present a detailed guideline for the systematic parameter revelation using alginate solutions of different concentrations as example. Furthermore, a starting point for future correlations of strut spreading in 3D-bioprinting and model parameters is revealed. This work establishes the basis for a better understanding and potential predictability of key parameters for various fabrication techniques.

Structural and mechanical evolution of reactively and non-reactively sputtered Zr-Al-N thin films during annealing

The influence of reactive and non-reactive sputtering on structure, mechanical properties, and thermal stability of Zr1 - xAlxN thin films during annealing to 1500 °C is investigated in detail. Reactive sputtering of a Zr0.6Al0.4 target leads to the formation of Zr0.66Al0.34N thin films, mainly composed of supersaturated cubic (c) Zr1 - xAlxN with small fractions of (semi-)coherent wurtzite (w) AlN domains. Upon annealing, the formation of cubic Zr-rich domains and growth of the (semi-)coherent w-AlN domains indicate spinodal-like decomposition. Loss of coherency can only be observed for annealing temperatures above 1150 °C. Following these decomposition processes, the hardness remains at the as-deposited value of ~ 29 GPa with annealing up to 1100 °C. Using a ceramic (ZrN)0.6(AlN)0.4 target and sputtering in Ar atmosphere allows preparing c-Zr0.68Al0.32N coatings with a well-defined crystalline single-phase cubic structure combined with higher hardnesses of ~ 31 GPa. Due to the absence of (semi-)coherent w-AlN domains in the as-deposited state, which could act as nucleation sites, the decomposition process of c-Zr1 - xAlxN is retarded. Only after annealing at 1270 °C, the formation of incoherent w-AlN can be detected. Hence, their hardness remains very high with ~ 33 GPa even after annealing at 1200 °C. The study highlights the importance of controlling the deposition process to prepare well-defined coatings with high mechanical properties and thermal stability.

A simplified technique for producing platelet-rich plasma and platelet concentrate for intraoral bone grafting techniques: a technical note

A method to produce platelet-rich plasma and platelet concentrate using a double centrifuge technique in combination with the fibrin adhesive Tisseel is described. This technique constitutes the basic mixture for augmenting and improving an inadequate bone site. Also described is a procedure by which autologous bone or bone substitute is added to this mixture to increase the volume of grafting material. Platelet concentrates cause growth factors to be delivered to graft sites in an intense form, while Tisseel serves as a standardized, pharmaceutically manufactured fibrin adhesive.
