Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD), affecting nearly 6.5 million people, is the fifth leading cause of death in individuals 65 years or older in the USA. Prior research has shown that AD disproportionality affects females; females have a greater incidence rate, perform worse on a variety of neuropsychological tasks, and have greater total brain atrophy. Recent research has linked these sex differences to neuroimaging markers of brain pathology, such as hippocampal volumes. Specifically, research from our lab found that functional connectivity from the hippocampus to the precuneus cortex and brain stem was significantly stronger in males than in females with mild cognitive impairment. The aim of this study was to extend our understanding to individuals with AD and to determine if these potential sex-specific functional connectivity biomarkers extend through different disease stages. The resting state fMRI and T2 MRI of cognitively normal individuals (n = 32, female = 16) and individuals with AD (n = 32, female = 16) from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) were analyzed using the Functional Connectivity Toolbox (CONN). Our results demonstrate that males had a significantly stronger interhemispheric functional connectivity between the left and right hippocampus compared to females. These results improve our current understanding of the role of the hippocampus in sex differences in AD. Understanding the contribution of impaired functional connectivity sex differences may aid in the development of sex-specific precision medicine for improved AD treatment.

Abstract
Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is the prodromal stage of Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Prior research shows that females are more impacted by MCI than males. On average females have a greater incidence rate of any dementia and current evidence suggests that they suffer greater cognitive deterioration than males in the same disease stage. Recent research has linked these sex differences to neuroimaging markers of brain pathology, such as hippocampal volumes. Specifically, the rate of hippocampal atrophy affects the progression of AD in females more than males. This study was designed to extend our understanding of the sex-related differences in the brain of participants with MCI. Specifically, we investigated the difference in the hippocampal connectivity to different areas of the brain. The Resting State fMRI and T2 MRI of cognitively normal individuals (n = 40, female = 20) and individuals with MCI (n = 40, female = 20) from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) were analyzed using the Functional Connectivity Toolbox (CONN). Our results demonstrate that connectivity of hippocampus to the precuneus cortex and brain stem was significantly stronger in males than in females. These results improve our current understanding of the role of hippocampus-precuneus cortex and hippocampus-brainstem connectivity in sex differences in MCI. Understanding the contribution of impaired functional connectivity sex differences may aid in the development of sex specific precision medicine to manipulate hippocampal-precuneus cortex and hippocampal-brainstem connectivity to decrease the progression of MCI to AD.

Abstract
We previously reported the remarkable potency of uttroside B (Utt-B), saponin-isolated and characterized in our lab from Solanum nigrum Linn, against HCC. Recently, the U.S. FDA approved Utt-B as an ‘orphan drug’ against HCC. The current study validates the superior anti-HCC efficacy of Utt-B over sorafenib, the first-line treatment option against HCC. The therapeutic efficacies of Utt-B vs. sorafenib against HCC were compared in vitro, using various liver cancer cell lines and in vivo, utilizing NOD.CB17-Prkdcscid/J mice bearing human HCC xenografts. Our data indicate that Utt-B holds an augmented anti-HCC efficacy over sorafenib. Our previous report demonstrated the pharmacological safety of Utt-B in Chang Liver, the normal immortalized hepatocytes, and in the acute and chronic toxicity murine models even at elevated Utt-B concentrations. Here, we show that higher concentrations of sorafenib induce severe toxicity, in Chang Liver, as well as in acute and chronic in vivo models, indicating that, apart from the superior therapeutic benefit over sorafenib, Utt-B is a pharmacologically safer molecule, and the drug-induced undesirable effects can, thus, be substantially alleviated in the context of HCC chemotherapy. Clinical studies in HCC patients utilizing Utt-B, is a contiguous key step to promote this drug to the clinic.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many physical, biological and neural systems behave as coupled oscillators, with characteristic phase coupling across different frequencies. Methods such as n : m phase locking value (where two coupling frequencies are linked as: mf 1 = nf 2) and bi-phase locking value have previously been proposed to quantify phase coupling between two resonant frequencies (e.g. f, 2f/3) and across three frequencies (e.g. f 1, f 2, f 1 + f 2), respectively. However, the existing phase coupling metrics have their limitations and limited applications. They cannot be used to detect or quantify phase coupling across multiple frequencies (e.g. f 1, f 2, f 3, f 4, f 1 + f 2 + f 3 - f 4), or coupling that involves non-integer multiples of the frequencies (e.g. f 1, f 2, 2f 1/3 + f 2/3). NEW METHODS To address the gap, this paper proposes a generalized approach, named multi-phase locking value (M-PLV), for the quantification of various types of instantaneous multi-frequency phase coupling. Different from most instantaneous phase coupling metrics that measure the simultaneous phase coupling, the proposed M-PLV method also allows the detection of delayed phase coupling and the associated time lag between coupled oscillators. RESULTS The M-PLV has been tested on cases where synthetic coupled signals are generated using white Gaussian signals, and a system comprised of multiple coupled Rössler oscillators, as well as a human subject dataset. Results indicate that the M-PLV can provide a reliable estimation of the time window and frequency combination where the phase coupling is significant, as well as a precise determination of time lag in the case of delayed coupling. This method has the potential to become a powerful new tool for exploring phase coupling in complex nonlinear dynamic systems.

Abstract
Background Aging is a major risk factor for a range of chronic diseases. Oxidative stress theory of aging has been previously proposed as one of the mechanisms responsible for the age-related decline in organ/tissue function and the development of age-related diseases. Urine contains rich biological information on the health status of every major organ system and can be an important noninvasive source for biomarkers of systemic oxidative stress in aging. Aims The objective of this cross-sectional study was to validate a novel panel of urinary oxidative stress biomarkers. Methods Nucleic acid oxidation adducts and oxidative damage markers of lipids and proteins were assessed in urine samples from nondiabetic and currently nonsmoking subjects (n = 198) across different ages (20 to 89 years old). Urinary parameters and chronological age were correlated then the biological age of enrolled individuals was determined from the urinary oxidative stress markers using the algorithm of Klemera and Doubal. Results Our findings showed that 8-oxo-7,8-deoxyguanosine (8-oxoG), 8-oxo-7,8-dihydroguanosine (8-OHdG), and dityrosine (DTyr) positively correlated with chronological age, while the level of an F2-isoprostane (iPF2 α-VI) correlated negatively with age. We found that 8-oxoG, DTyr, and iPF2 α-VI were significantly higher among accelerated agers compared to nonaccelerated agers and that a decision tree model could successfully identify accelerated agers with an accuracy of >92%. Discussion. Our results indicate that 8-oxoG and iPF2 α-VI levels in the urine reveal biological aging. Conclusion Assessing urinary biomarkers of oxidative stress may be an important approach for the evaluation of biological age by identifying individuals at accelerated risk for the development of age-related diseases.

Abstract
We report the demonstration of quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) with improved efficiency emitting at a wavelength of 4.9 µm in pulsed and continuous-wave (CW) operation. Based on an established design and guided by simulation, the number of QCL-emitting stages is increased in order to realize a 29.3% wall plug efficiency (WPE) in pulsed operation at room temperature. With proper fabrication and packaging, a 5-mm-long, 8-µm-wide QCL with a buried ridge waveguide is capable of 22% CW WPE and 5.6 W CW output power at room temperature. This corresponds to an extremely high optical density at the output facet of ∼35 MW/cm2, without any damage.

Abstract
Delineation of the bladder under a dynamic contrast enhanced (DCE)-MRI protocol requires robust segmentation. However, this method is subject to errors due to variations in the content of fluid within the bladder, as well as presence of air and similarity of signal intensity in adjacent organs. Introduction of the contrast media into the bladder also causes signal errors due to alterations in the shape of the bladder. To circumvent such errors, and to improve the accuracy, we adapted a machine learning paradigm that utilizes the global bladder shape. The ML system first uses the combination of low level image processing tools such as filtering, and mathematical morphology as preprocessing step. We use neural network for training the network using extracted features and application of trained model on test slices to compute the delineated bladder shapes. This ML-based integrated system has an accuracy of 90.73% and time reduction of 65.2% in over manual delineation and can be used in clinical settings for IC/BPS patient care. Finally, we apply Jaccard Similarity Measure which we report to have a mean score of 0.933 (95% Confidence Interval 0.923, 0.944).

Abstract
Diabetes and atherosclerosis are the predominant causes of stroke and cardiovascular disease (CVD) both in low- and high-income countries. This is due to the lack of appropriate medical care or high medical costs. Low-cost 10-year preventive screening can be used for deciding an effective therapy to reduce the effects of atherosclerosis in diabetes patients. American College of Cardiology (ACC)/American Heart Association (AHA) recommended the use of 10-year risk calculators, before advising therapy. Conventional risk calculators are suboptimal in certain groups of patients because their stratification depends on (a) current blood biomarkers and (b) clinical phenotypes, such as age, hypertension, ethnicity, and sex. The focus of this review is on risk assessment using innovative composite risk scores that use conventional blood biomarkers combined with vascular image-based phenotypes. AtheroEdge™ tool is beneficial for low-moderate to high-moderate and low-risk to high-risk patients for the current and 10-year risk assessment that outperforms conventional risk calculators. The preventive screening tool that combines the image-based phenotypes with conventional risk factors can improve the 10-year cardiovascular/stroke risk assessment.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the feasibility of gender assignment in 46,XY disorders of sex development (DSD) with severe undermasculinisation mainly based on molecular diagnosis. Methods: A retrospective study of 45 patients of 46, XY DSD with severe undermasculinisation were admitted between November 2015 and October 2018 at Children's Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine. The initial social gender were all female, of whom the external genital manifestations were Prader 0 to 2; the degree of masculinity was scored using external masculinisation score (EMS); the position and development of the gonads were examined by ultrasound, cystoscopy and laparoscopy, also including assessing the development of the Wolffian tube and the Müllerian tube. The level and ratio of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone before and after hCG stimulation were evaluated for the function of Leydig cell and 5α-reductase-2. Gender role scales and sandbox games were used to assess gender role behavior. Genital sensitivity to androgen stimulation was assessed; A panel including 163 genes related to gender development were determined by second-generation sequencing in all 45 patients. Finally, a multidisciplinary team (MDT) makes a gender assignment after a comprehensive analysis mainly based on the molecular etiological diagnosis. Results: Thirty-nine out of 45 patients (87%) had an identifiable genetic etiology, and the remaining 6 (13%) were negative for genetic testing. Forty-five patients had EMS less than or equal to 3 points. Sexual psychological assessment was performed in 39 patients, with male dominance in 24 (62%) and female dominance in 15 (38%). The gender assignment was 23 cases (51%) for male and 19 cases (42%) for female, and 3 cases (7%) were not completely determined. Conclusions: Molecular diagnosis provides a strong basis for appropriate gender assignment of 46, XY DSD children with severe undermasculinisation. Based on molecular diagnosis, each DSD should be analyzed by professional MDT to analyze the clinical symptoms/signs, gonadal development, gonad tumor risk, external genital morphology, sexual psychological assessment, potential fertility opportunities, parental views, Social and cultural factors, etc. make appropriate gender assignment.

Abstract
Acute phase after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) is associated with several metabolic derangements including stress-induced hyperglycemia (SIH). The present study is designed to identify objective radiological determinants for SIH to better understand its contributory role in clinical outcomes after aSAH. A computer-aided detection tool was used to segment admission computed tomography (CT) images of aSAH patients to estimate intracranial blood and cerebrospinal fluid volumes. Modified Graeb score (mGS) was used as a semi-quantitative measure to estimate degree of hydrocephalus. The relationship between glycemic gap (GG) determined SIH, mGS, and estimated intracranial blood and cerebrospinal fluid volumes were evaluated using linear regression. Ninety-four [94/187 (50.3%)] among the study cohort had SIH (defined as GG > 26.7 mg/dl). Patients with SIH had 14.3 ml/1000 ml more intracranial blood volume as compared to those without SIH [39.6 ml (95% confidence interval, CI, 33.6 to 45.5) vs. 25.3 ml (95% CI 20.6 to 29.9), p = 0.0002]. Linear regression analysis of mGS with GG showed each unit increase in mGS resulted in 1.2 mg/dl increase in GG [p = 0.002]. Patients with SIH had higher mGS [median 4.0, interquartile range, IQR 2.0-7.0] as compared to those without SIH [median 2.0, IQR 0.0-6.0], p = 0.002. Patients with third ventricular blood on admission CT scan were more likely to develop SIH [67/118 (56.8%) vs. 27/69 (39.1%), p = 0.023]. Hence, the present study, using unbiased SIH definition and objective CT scan parameters, reports "dose-dependent" radiological features resulting in SIH. Such findings allude to a brain injury-stress response-neuroendocrine axis in etiopathogenesis of SIH.

Abstract
OBJECTIVEThe orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) is understood to have a role in outcome evaluation and risk assessment and is commonly involved with infiltrative tumors. A detailed understanding of the exact location and nature of associated white matter tracts could significantly improve postoperative morbidity related to declining capacity. Through diffusion tensor imaging–based fiber tracking validated by gross anatomical dissection as ground truth, the authors have characterized these connections based on relationships to other well-known structures.METHODSDiffusion imaging from the Human Connectome Project for 10 healthy adult controls was used for tractography analysis. The OFC was evaluated as a whole based on connectivity with other regions. All OFC tracts were mapped in both hemispheres, and a lateralization index was calculated with resultant tract volumes. Ten postmortem dissections were then performed using a modified Klingler technique to demonstrate the location of major tracts.RESULTSThe authors identified 3 major connections of the OFC: a bundle to the thalamus and anterior cingulate gyrus, passing inferior to the caudate and medial to the vertical fibers of the thalamic projections; a bundle to the brainstem, traveling lateral to the caudate and medial to the internal capsule; and radiations to the parietal and occipital lobes traveling with the inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus.CONCLUSIONSThe OFC is an important center for processing visual, spatial, and emotional information. Subtle differences in executive functioning following surgery for frontal lobe tumors may be better understood in the context of the fiber-bundle anatomy highlighted by this study.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Supplementary motor area (SMA) syndrome is a constellation of temporary symptoms that may occur following tumors of the frontal lobe. Affected patients develop akinesia and mutism but often recover within weeks to months. With our own case examples and with correlations to fiber tracking validated by gross anatomical dissection as ground truth, we describe a white matter pathway through which recovery may occur. METHODS Diffusion spectrum imaging from the Human Connectome Project was used for tractography analysis. SMA outflow tracts were mapped in both hemispheres using a predefined seeding region. Postmortem dissections of 10 cadaveric brains were performed using a modified Klingler technique to verify the tractography results. RESULTS Two cases were identified in our clinical records in which patients sustained permanent SMA syndrome after complete disconnection of the SMA and corpus callosum (CC). After investigating the postoperative anatomy of these resections, we identified a pattern of nonhomologous connections through the CC connecting the premotor area to the contralateral premotor and SMAs. The transcallosal fibers have projections from the previously described frontal aslant tract (FAT) and thus, we have termed this path the "crossed FAT." CONCLUSIONS We hypothesize that this newly described tract may facilitate recovery from SMA syndrome by maintaining interhemispheric connectivity through the supplementary motor and premotor areas.

PURPOSE To comprehensively compare four computed tomography (CT) scanner shielding design methods using RadShield, a Java-based graphical user interface (GUI). METHODS RadShield, a floor plan based GUI, was extended to calculate air kerma and barrier thickness using accepted methods from the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP), the British Institute of Radiology, and a method using isodose maps, for spatially distributed points beyond user defined barriers. For a stationary CT scanner, the overall shielding recommendations found using RadShield were also compared to those found by American Board of Radiology certified diagnostic medical physicists using the conventional NCRP dose length product method and the isodose map method. RESULTS The results between methods differed significantly for calculation point locations beyond the gantry and to the rear of the gantry. Overall shielding design recommendations across the four methods yielded similar average air kerma and thickness values for the barriers. CONCLUSIONS RadShield was extended to perform CT shielding design and proved reliable using four methods.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Interest in the function of the inferior parietal lobule (IPL) has resulted in increased understanding of its involvement in visuospatial and cognitive functioning, and its role in semantic networks. A basic understanding of the nuanced white-matter anatomy in this region may be useful in improving outcomes when operating in this region of the brain. We sought to derive the surgical relationship between the IPL and underlying major white-matter bundles by characterizing macroscopic connectivity. METHODS Data of 10 healthy adult controls from the Human Connectome Project were used for tractography analysis. All IPL connections were mapped in both hemispheres, and distances were recorded between cortical landmarks and major tracts. Ten postmortem dissections were then performed using a modified Klingler technique to serve as ground truth. RESULTS We identified three major types of connections of the IPL. (1) Short association fibers connect the supramarginal and angular gyri, and connect both of these gyri to the superior parietal lobule. (2) Fiber bundles from the IPL connect to the frontal lobe by joining the superior longitudinal fasciculus near the termination of the Sylvian fissure. (3) Fiber bundles from the IPL connect to the temporal lobe by joining the middle longitudinal fasciculus just inferior to the margin of the superior temporal sulcus. CONCLUSIONS We present a summary of the relevant anatomy of the IPL as part of a larger effort to understand the anatomic connections of related networks. This study highlights the principle white-matter pathways and highlights key underlying connections.

Abstract
We evaluated serum total bilirubin levels as a predictor for metabolic syndrome (MetS) and investigated the relationship between serum total bilirubin levels and MetS prevalence. This cross-sectional study included 1728 participants over 65 years of age from Eastern China. Anthropometric data, lifestyle information, and previous medical history were collected. We then measured serum levels of fasting blood-glucose, total cholesterol, triglycerides, and total bilirubin, as well as alanine aminotransferase activity. The prevalence of MetS and each of its individual component were calculated per quartile of total bilirubin level. Logistic regression was used to assess the correlation between serum total bilirubin levels and MetS. Total bilirubin level in the women who did not have MetS was significantly higher than in those who had MetS (P<0.001). Serum total bilirubin quartiles were linearly and negatively correlated with MetS prevalence and hypertriglyceridemia (HTG) in females (P<0.005). Logistic regression showed that serum total bilirubin was an independent predictor of MetS for females (OR: 0.910, 95%CI: 0.863-0.960; P=0.001). The present study suggests that physiological levels of serum total bilirubin might be an independent risk factor for aged Chinese women, and the prevalence of MetS and HTG are negatively correlated to serum total bilirubin levels.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to introduce and describe the development of RadShield, a Java-based graphical user interface (GUI), which provides a base design that uniquely performs thorough, spatially distributed calculations at many points and reports the maximum air-kerma rate and barrier thickness for each barrier pursuant to NCRP Report 147 methodology. Semiautomated shielding design calculations are validated by two approaches: a geometry-based approach and a manual approach. A series of geometry-based equations were derived giv-ing the maximum air-kerma rate magnitude and location through a first derivative root finding approach. The second approach consisted of comparing RadShield results with those found by manual shielding design by an American Board of Radiology (ABR)-certified medical physicist for two clinical room situations: two adjacent catheterization labs, and a radiographic and fluoroscopic (R&F) exam room. RadShield's efficacy in finding the maximum air-kerma rate was compared against the geometry-based approach and the overall shielding recommendations by RadShield were compared against the medical physicist's shielding results. Percentage errors between the geometry-based approach and RadShield's approach in finding the magnitude and location of the maximum air-kerma rate was within 0.00124% and 14 mm. RadShield's barrier thickness calculations were found to be within 0.156 mm lead (Pb) and 0.150 mm lead (Pb) for the adjacent catheteriza-tion labs and R&F room examples, respectively. However, within the R&F room example, differences in locating the most sensitive calculation point on the floor plan for one of the barriers was not considered in the medical physicist's calculation and was revealed by the RadShield calculations. RadShield is shown to accurately find the maximum values of air-kerma rate and barrier thickness using NCRP Report 147 methodology. Visual inspection alone of the 2D X-ray exam distribution by a medical physicist may not be sufficient to accurately select the point of maximum air-kerma rate or barrier thickness.

Abstract
OBJECTIVEGliomas invading the anterior corpus callosum are commonly deemed unresectable due to an unacceptable risk/benefit ratio, including the risk of abulia. In this study, the authors investigated the anatomy of the cingulum and its connectivity within the default mode network (DMN). A technique is described involving awake subcortical mapping with higher attention tasks to preserve the cingulum and reduce the incidence of postoperative abulia for patients with so-called butterfly gliomas.METHODSThe authors reviewed clinical data on all patients undergoing glioma surgery performed by the senior author during a 4-year period at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. Forty patients were identified who underwent surgery for butterfly gliomas. Each patient was designated as having undergone surgery either with or without the use of awake subcortical mapping and preservation of the cingulum. Data recorded on these patients included the incidence of abulia/akinetic mutism. In the context of the study findings, the authors conducted a detailed anatomical study of the cingulum and its role within the DMN using postmortem fiber tract dissections of 10 cerebral hemispheres and in vivo diffusion tractography of 10 healthy subjects.RESULTSForty patients with butterfly gliomas were treated, 25 (62%) with standard surgical methods and 15 (38%) with awake subcortical mapping and preservation of the cingulum. One patient (1/15, 7%) experienced postoperative abulia following surgery with the cingulum-sparing technique. Greater than 90% resection was achieved in 13/15 (87%) of these patients.CONCLUSIONSThis study presents evidence that anterior butterfly gliomas can be safely removed using a novel, attention-task based, awake brain surgery technique that focuses on preserving the anatomical connectivity of the cingulum and relevant aspects of the cingulate gyrus.

Abstract
PURPOSE Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome is a bladder pain disorder associated with voiding symptomatology and other systemic chronic pain disorders. Currently diagnosing interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome is complicated as patients present with a wide range of symptoms, physical examination findings and clinical test responses. One hypothesis is that interstitial cystitis symptoms arise from increased bladder permeability to urine solutes. This study establishes the feasibility of using contrast enhanced magnetic resonance imaging to quantify bladder permeability in patients with interstitial cystitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS Permeability alterations in bladder urothelium were assessed by intravesical administration of the magnetic resonance imaging contrast agent Gd-DTPA (Gd-diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid) in a small cohort of patients. Magnetic resonance imaging signal intensity in patient and control bladders was compared regionally and for entire bladders. RESULTS Quantitative assessment of magnetic resonance imaging signal intensity indicated a significant increase in signal intensity in anterior bladder regions compared to posterior regions in patients with interstitial cystitis (p <0.01) and significant increases in signal intensity in anterior bladder regions (p <0.001). Kurtosis (shape of probability distribution) and skewness (measure of probability distribution asymmetry) were associated with contrast enhancement in total bladders in patients with interstitial cystitis vs controls (p <0.05). Regarding symptomatology interstitial cystitis cases differed significantly from controls on the SF-36®, PUF (Pelvic Pain and Urgency/Frequency) and ICPI (Interstitial Cystitis Problem Index) questionnaires with no overlap in the score range in each group. ICSI (Interstitial Cystitis Symptom Index) differed significantly but with a slight overlap in the range of scores. CONCLUSIONS Data suggest that contrast enhanced magnetic resonance imaging provides an objective, quantifiable measurement of bladder permeability that could be used to stratify bladder pain patients and monitor therapy.

Abstract
Sixteen new microsatellites were, identified by screening 7533 expressed sequence tags of Chinese mitten crab, Eriocheir sinensis from GenBank data we published. They were polymorphic with the PIC value ranged from 0.349 to 0.957, the number of alleles ranged from 22 to 48, and the observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.375 to 1.000 and 0.366 to 0.983, respectively. Five loci could be applicable to genetic diversity and population structure of E. sinensis.

Abstract
This work examines the feasibility and implementation of information service-orientated architecture (ISOA) on an emergent literature domain of human papillomavirus, head and neck cancer, and imaging. From this work, we examine the impact of cancer informatics and generate a full set of summarizing clinical pearls. Additionally, we describe how such an ISOA creates potential benefits in informatics education, enhancing utility for creating enduring digital content in this clinical domain.

Abstract
We have investigated the effect of IMM-H004 (7-hydroxy-5-methoxy-4-methyl-3-(4-methylpiperazin-1-yl)-2H-chromen-2-one), a coumarin derivative, on the amyloid beta (Aβ)-induced neurotoxicity in primary culture cortical neurons and pheochromocytoma (PC12) cells. Our results showed that treatment with IMM-H004 markedly reduced the number of apoptotic cells after exposure to Aβ25-35 or Aβ1-42, determined by MTT, TUNEL staining and Flow cytometry. Further study indicated that IMM-H004 significantly inhibited Aβ-induced cytotoxicity and apoptosis by reversing Aβ-induced mitochondrial dysfunction, including MMP (mitochondrial membrane potential) decrease, reactive oxygen species production, and mitochondrial release of cytochrome c. IMM-H004 can regulate the interaction between Bax and Bcl-2, decreased levels of p53 and active caspase-3 protein induced by Aβ25-35. Furthermore, IMM-H004 also reduced translocation of AIF (apoptosis-inducing factor) induced by Aβ25-35. These results demonstrated that IMM-H004 was capable of protecting neuronal cells from Aβ-induced degeneration through a mitochondrial-dependent apoptotic pathway. The results of this study lend further credence to the notion that IMM-H004 is a 'multipotent therapeutic agrent' that reduces toxic levels of brain Aβ, and holds the potential to protect neuronal mitochondrial function in Alzheimer's disease.

Abstract
PURPOSE To study the temporal changes of dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) perfusion patterns during the radiation therapy (RT) course and their influence on local control and survival in cervical cancer. METHODS AND MATERIALS DCE-MRI was performed in 98 patients with Stage IB(2)-IVA cervical cancer before RT (pre-RT) and during early RT (20-25 Gy) and mid-RT (45-50 Gy). Signal intensity (SI) from the DCE-MRI time-SI curve was derived for each tumor voxel. The poorly perfused low-DCE tumor subregions were quantified as lower 10th percentiles of SI (SI10). Local control, disease-specific survival, and overall survival were correlated with DCE parameters at pre-RT, early RT, and mid-RT. Median follow-up was 4.9 (range, 0.2-9.0) years. RESULTS Patients (16/98) with initial pre-RT high DCE (SI10 >or=2.1) had 100% 5-year local control, 81% disease-specific survival, and 81% overall survival, compared with only 79%, 61%, and 55%, respectively, in patients with pre-RT low DCE. Conversion from pre-RT low DCE to high DCE in early RT (28/82 patients) was associated with higher local control, disease-specific survival, and overall survival (93%, 74%, and 67%, respectively). In comparison with all other groups, outcome was worst in patients with persistently low DCE from pre-RT throughout the mid-RT phase (66%, 44%, and 43%; p = 0.003, 0.003, and 0.020; respectively). CONCLUSION Longitudinal tumor perfusion changes during RT correlate with treatment outcome. Persistently low perfusion in pre-RT, early RT, and mid-RT indicates a high risk of treatment failure, whereas outcome is favorable in patients with initially high perfusion or subsequent improvements of initially low perfusion. These findings likely reflect reoxygenation and may have potential for noninvasive monitoring of intra-treatment radio-responsiveness and for guiding adaptive therapy.

Abstract
In this work, InAs quantum dots (QDs) grown on a linear graded InGaAs metamorphic buffer layer by molecular beam epitaxy have been investigated. The growth of the metamorphic buffer layers was carefully optimized, yielding a smooth surface with a minimum root mean square of roughness of less than 0.98 nm as measured by atomic force microscopy (AFM). InAs QDs were then grown on the buffer layers, and their emission wavelength at room-temperature is 1.49 microm as measured by photoluminescence (PL). The effects of post-growth rapid thermal annealing (RTA) on the optical properties of the InAs QDs were investigated. After the RTA, the PL peak of the QDs was blue-shifted and the full width at half maximum decreased.

Abstract
PURPOSE To introduce, implement, and assess an iterative modification to the active deformational image segmentation method as applied to cervical cancer tumors. MATERIALS AND METHODS A comparison by Jaccard similarity (JS) between this active deformational method and manual segmentation was performed on tumors of various sizes across preradiation, 3 weeks postradiation, and 6 weeks postradiation using a General Linear Mixed Model across 121 studies from 52 patients with Stage IIB-IV cervical cancers. RESULTS The deformable segmentation method produced promising levels of agreement including JS factors of 0.71+/-0.11 in the preradiation studies. The analysis illustrated a rate of improvement in JS with increasing tumor volume that differed between the preradiation and 6 weeks postradiation stage (P=0.0474). In the large preradiated tumors each additional cm3 of volume was associated with an increase or improvement in JS of 0.0008 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.0003, 0.0014). In the smaller postradiation tumors, each additional cm3 of volume was associated with a more robust improvement in JS of 0.0046 (95% CI: 0.0009, 0.0082). CONCLUSION Agreement was strongly affected by tumor volume, and its performance was most impacted across volume in the later stages of radiation therapy. The deformation-based segmentation method appears to demonstrate utility for delineating cervical cancer tumors, particularly in the earliest stages of radiation treatment, where agreement is greatest.

Abstract
Subject head movement, during the experimental and/or clinical procedure is an inevitable part of the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) brain mapping methods despite the availability of a large variety of head fixation devices employed in these studies. Thus, image registration is an essential processing step in fMRI. This is due to the fact that there is inevitable movement during the course on an fMRI experiment. An additional challenge is the explicit geometrical deformations associated with MRI. It is known that orientational changes are problematic in MRI in the presence of susceptibility differences especially between bone-tissue and air-tissue interfaces. This paper presents two registration strategies for fMRI registration, one using rigid registration based on maximization of mutual information, and the second is non-rigid registration adapted from Thirion's demons algorithm to demonstrate the importance and impact on fMRI in regions of susceptibility and its dependence on the image registration methodology.

Abstract
This paper reports the light emission from aligned multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) under continuous wave CO(2) laser (λ = 10.6 µm) irradiation. Results indicate that the light emission is dependent on the angle θ between the laser incident direction and the nanotube axis. The relative intensity of the light emission at certain wavelengths shows a Lorentzian feature when θ varies from 0° to 90°. The Lorentzian fitting curve displays a distinct tendency between shorter (λ<600 nm) and longer wavelength (λ>700 nm). A minimum intensity was observed at θ(m) close to 67° under shorter wavelength, whereas a maximum intensity was shown at θ(m) of about 60° at longer wavelength. These results show the anisotropic property of aligned MWNTs.

Abstract
Degenerative joint disease is a major source of disability in the world with over 43 million individuals suffering from the affliction in the United States alone. It is the most common cause of activity limitation in individuals over 65 years of age. While much of the focus in recent years has been on osteoarthritis of the hips and knees, shoulder degenerative disease is becoming a more commonly recognized source of morbidity with a wide range of associated lifestyle-limiting disabilities. At the same time therapeutic options for treatment of degenerative joint disease are rapidly increasing, both medically and surgically. This combination of factors makes it necessary to determine a reliable, noninvasive means by which to accurately diagnose the early changes of shoulder degenerative disease. The clinical diagnosis of shoulder osteoarthritis is extremely challenging. There are numerous existing mimickers such as rotator cuff injuries, bursitis, and impingement syndrome. While the conventional radiographic findings are well recognized, they are generally late developments in the course of the disease when therapeutic options are more limited and less effective. Additionally, plain film evaluation has poor sensitivity for the detection of many of the alternative diagnoses that may underlie chronic shoulder pain. Though correlative findings are seen in MR imaging, its role in evaluating glenohumeral degenerative changes has been limited, with much of the focus being on the identification of tendinous and ligamentous disease or osseous tumors. A retrospective analysis is presented which demonstrates the efficacy of MR imaging in assessing GHJ OA, as well as shows that dedicated evaluation for specific degenerative findings results in improved detection rates of GHJ degenerative disease. It is believed that with improved detection and reporting, improved clinical care for this prevalent disorder may be achieved.

Abstract
We applied hydrostatic pressure (up to 10 GPa) to single-walled carbon nanotube bundles at low temperature (down to 2 K) to measure their magnetoresistance (MR) in a field up to 12 T. We found a pressure-induced transition in MR from positive to negative in the high-field regime. The onset of the transition occurs at approximately 1.5 GPa, which correlates closely with the tube shape transitions. The characteristics of the high-pressure MR are consistent with a model of pressure-induced two-dimensional weak localization.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the patterns and distribution of tumor shape and its temporal change during radiation therapy (RT) in cervical cancer and the effect of tumor configuration changes on the correlation between region of interest (ROI)-based and diameter-based MRI tumor measurement. MATERIALS AND METHODS Serial MRI examinations (T1-weighted and T2-weighted images) were performed in 60 patients (age range, 29-75 years; mean, 53.3 years) with advanced cervical cancer (stages IB2-IVB/recurrent) who were treated with RT at four time points: start of RT, during RT (at 2-2.5 and at 4-5 weeks of RT), and post-RT. Tumor configuration was classified qualitatively into oval, lobulated, and complex based on MR film review. Two methods of tumor volume measurement were compared: ellipsoid computation of three orthogonal diameters (diameter based) and ROI volumetry by delineating the entire tumor volume on the MR workstation (ROI based). Temporal changes of tumor shape and the respective tumor volumes measured by the two methods were analyzed using linear regression analysis. RESULTS Most tumors (70%) had a non-oval (lobulated and complex) shape before RT and became increasingly irregular during and after RT: 84% at 2-2.5 weeks of RT (p = 0.037), 86% (p = 0.025) at 4-5 weeks, and 96% post-RT (p = 0.010), compared with 70% pre-RT. Diameter-based and ROI-based measurement correlated well before RT (r = 0.89) but not during RT (r = 0.68 at 2-2.5 weeks, r = 0.67 at 4-5 weeks of RT). CONCLUSION Most cervical cancers are not oval in shape pretherapy, and they become increasingly irregular during and after therapy because of nonconcentric tumor shrinkage. ROI-based volumetry, which can optimally measure irregular volumes, may provide better response assessment during treatment than diameter-based measurement.

Abstract
Rousettus leschenaulti is an abundant species in many countries of South‐East Asia, including south China. We isolated seven microsatellite loci in R. leschenaulti from genomic DNA enriched for CA repeats with the enriched library method. A total of 56 samples from a population in the Guangxi Province of China were tested with these microsatellite markers. The polymorphism ranged from seven to 16 alleles, and the observed heterozygosity was 84–94%. It is the first time microsatellite markers were characterized from R. leschenaulti, and these markers can be an important tool for analysing population structure and genotypic diversity.

Abstract
Radiation therapy for cervical cancer involves a team of specialists, including diagnostic radiologists (DRs), radiation oncologists (ROs), and medical physicists (MPs), to optimize imaging‐based radiation therapy planning. The purpose of the study was to investigate the interobserver variations in tumor delineation on MR images of cervical cancer within the same and among different specialties. Twenty MRI cervical cancer studies were independently reviewed by two DRs, two ROs, and two MPs. For every study, each specialist contoured the tumor regions of interest (ROIs) on T2‐weighted Turbo Spin Echo sagittal images on all slices containing tumor, and the total tumor volume was computed for statistical analysis. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare the differences in tumor volume delineation among the observers. A graph of all tumor‐delineated volumes was generated, and differences between the maximum and minimum volumes over all the readers for each patient dataset were computed. Challenges during the evaluation process for tumor delineation were recorded for each specialist. Interobserver variations of delineated tumor volumes were significant (p<0.01) among all observers based on a repeated measures ANOVA, which produced an F(5,95)=3.55. The median difference between the maximum delineated volume and minimum delineated volume was 33.5 cm3 (which can be approximated by a sphere of 4.0 cm diameter) across all 20 patients. Challenges noted for tumor delineation included the following: (1) partial voluming by parametrial fat at the periphery of the uterus; (2) extension of the tumor into parametrial space; (3) similar signal intensity of structures proximal to the tumor such as ovaries, muscles, bladder wall, bowel loops, and pubic symphysis; (4) postradiation changes such as heterogeneity and necrosis; (5) susceptibility artifacts from bowels and vaginal tampons; (6) presence of other pathologies such as atypical myoma; (7) factors that affect pelvic anatomy, including the degree of bladder distension, bowel interposition, uterine malposition, retroversion, and descensus. Our limited study indicates significant interobserver variation in tumor delineation. Despite rapid progress in technology, which has improved the resolution and precision of image acquisition and the delivery of radiotherapy to the millimeter level, such “human” variations (at the centimeter level) may overshadow the gain from technical advancement and impact treatment planning. Abstract
The PEARLS study prospectively monitored selected nosocomial pathogens from 38 centres in 13 European, three Middle Eastern countries and South Africa during 2001-2002. Extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) production rates among Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Enterobacter spp. were 5.4% (142/2609), 18.2% (401/2,206) and 8.8% (204/2,328), respectively, for all study sites. The overall ESBL production rate for the combined Enterobacteriaceae was 10.5% (747/7,143), highest in Egypt, 38.5%, and Greece, 27.4%, and lowest in The Netherlands, 2.0%, and Germany, 2.6%. IEF, PCR and DNA sequencing determined 10.7% false positives among Enterobacter spp. when using NCCLS guidelines to screen for ESBL production. The prevalence of nosocomial methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium was 32.4% (294/908) and 8.7% (83/949), respectively. PEARLS provides baseline data against which prospective changes in resistant determinants and outcomes can be measured in this ongoing study.

Abstract
Mucoid degeneration of the ACL is an unusual entity that has only been recently described. The imaging features of this entity have been described to a sufficient degree to provide diagnostic criteria, and its appearance can be characteristic. It is important to recognize this entity as a chronic process as its presentation and appearance can mimic a tear of the ACL. The etiology of mucoid degeneration of the ACL is unclear, but it may represent part of a continuum between early degeneration of the collagen fibrils of the ACL and frank formation of a ganglion cyst. The mucoid degeneration usually produces symptoms similar to those of an intra-articular mass, but pain may also be associated with this process. Treatment may require partial or complete resection of the ACL, but percutaneous aspiration of the fluid components of the affected ACL may also be effective at alleviating the associated symptoms.

Abstract
In the processes that are used to produce single-walled nanotubes (electric arc, laser ablation, and chemical vapor deposition), the typical lengths of tangled nanotube bundles reach several tens of micrometers. We report that long nanotube strands, up to several centimeters in length, consisting of aligned single-walled nanotubes can be synthesized by the catalytic pyrolysis of n-hexane with an enhanced vertical floating technique. The long strands of nanotubes assemble continuously from arrays of nanotubes, which are intrinsically long.

Abstract
Superior mesenteric arteriovenous fistula is rarely encountered. Unrecognized in early stage, it can cause hazardous sequelae of portal hypertension. Herein we report a rare case of portal obstruction associated with an aneurysmal dilatation of the superior mesenteric vein, which was caused by a superior mesenteric arteriovenous fistula. The patient was a 74-year-old woman admitted for continuous hemetemesis, presenting with a palpable abdominal mass. The computed tomogram revealed a 6.5 cm superior mesenteric venous aneurysm and thrombotic portal venous obstruction. On account of impending shock, an emergent portal venous thrombectomy and portocaval shunt was carried out. Superior mesenteric arterial angiography performed 4 months later confirmed the diagnosis. Being without symptoms, the patient was clinically followed and remained in stable condition for 3 and a half years. The clinical presentation of a mesenteric arteriovenous fistula varies, with occasional gastrointestinal tract hemorrhage. When complicated with portal obstruction, the condition can be disastrous. We believe that creation of a porto-systemic shunt with resection of the arterio-venous fistula is the proper treatment. This patient is now under close observation.

Abstract
Here we describe the cloning, localization, and characterization of a novel mammalian endo-apyrase (LALP1) in human and mouse. The predicted human LALP1 gene encodes a 604-amino acid protein, whereas the mouse Lalp1 gene encodes a 606-amino acid protein. The human and mouse genes have 88% amino acid sequence identity. These genes share considerable homologies with hLALP70, a recently discovered mammalian lysosomal endo-apyrase. The human LALP1 gene resides on chromosome 10q23-q24 and contains 12 exons and 11 introns covering a genomic region of approximately 46 kilobase pairs. The subcellular localization and enzymatic activity of LALP1 indicated that LALP1 is indeed an endo-apyrase with substrate preference for nucleoside triphosphates UTP, GTP, and CTP.

Abstract
The specific functions of the amino acid residues in the streptokinase (SK) gamma-domain were analyzed by studying the interactions of human plasminogen (HPlg) and SK mutants prepared by charge-to-alanine mutagenesis. SK with mutations of groups of amino acids outside the coiled coil region of SK gamma-domain, SK(K278A,K279A,E281A,K282A), and SK(D360A,R363A) had similar HPlg activator activities as wild-type SK. However, significant changes of the functions of SK with mutations within the coiled coil region were observed. Both SK(D322A,R324A,D325A) and SK(R330A,D331A,K332A,K334A) had decreased amounts of complex formation with microplasminogen and failed to activate HPlg. SK(D328A,R330A) had a 21-fold reduced catalytic efficiency for HPlg activation. The studies of SK with single amino acid mutation to Ala demonstrate that Arg(324), Asp(325), Lys(332), and Lys(334) play important roles in the formation of a HPlg.SK complex. On the other hand, amino acid residues Asp(322), Asp(328), and Arg(330) of SK are involved in the virgin enzyme induction. Potential contact between Lys(332) of SK and Glu(623) of human microplasmin and strong interactions between Asp(328) and Lys(330), Asp(331) and Lys(334), and Asp(322) and Lys(334) of SK are noticed. These interactions are important in maintaining a coiled coil conformation. Therefore, we conclude that the coiled coil region of SK gamma-domain, SK(Leu(314)-Ala(342)), plays very important roles in HPlg activation by participating in virgin enzyme induction and stabilizing the activator complex.

The thiosemicarbazone moiety and the benzene ring are essentially coplanar, with mean and maximum deviations of 0.03 and 0. 11 A, respectively. The dimethylformamide molecules bridge the thiosemicarbazone moieties, forming two-dimensional sheets through N-H.O hydrogen bonds.

Abstract
We present experimental results on eigenfunctions of a wave chaotic system in the continuous crossover regime between time-reversal symmetric and time-reversal symmetry-broken states. The statistical properties of the eigenfunctions of a two-dimensional microwave resonator are analyzed as a function of an experimentally determined time-reversal symmetry-breaking parameter. We test four theories of one-point eigenfunction statistics and introduce a new theory relating the one-point and two-point statistical properties in the crossover regime. We also find a universal correlation between the one-point and two-point statistical parameters for the crossover eigenfunctions.

Abstract
The novel mutant streptokinase, SK-K59E, can activate human plasminogen as efficiently as the purified commercially available streptokinase. Several peptide bonds including Lys59-Ser60 in native streptokinase were hydrolyzed in reaction with plasmin and peptides of small molecular masses were generated. The plasminogen activator activity of native streptokinase in reaction with human plasmin declined to 25% of the original activity in a 120-min incubation. On the other hand, the NH2-terminal peptide of SK-K59E remained intact in reaction with plasmin and the activator activity of streptokinase decreased to 75% of the original activity in 120 min. The major degraded peptide fragments of native streptokinase in reaction with plasmin had molecular masses of 36 and 30 kDa. However, two major peptide fragments of 42 and 34 kDa were observed in the reaction of SK-K59E with human plasmin. The 42 kDa peptide fragment, which contained NH2-terminal of streptokinase, could activate human plasminogen as efficiently as the native streptokinase. SK-K59E can induce greater degree of caseinolysis and fibrinolysis than the native streptokinase. In conclusion, the results demonstrate that the prevention of cleavage at Lys59 of streptokinase prolongs the half-life of streptokinase in complex with plasmin and that the NH2-terminal of streptokinase (Ile1-Lys59) plays an important role in maintaining its stability.
