Abstract
OBJECTIVE In anorexia nervosa (AN), the traits of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are associated with poor outcomes. However, the subtle nature of these characteristics remains poorly understood. We investigated the in-depth patterns of ASD traits using Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-Second Edition (ADOS-2) in women with AN. METHODS Of 28 women with ICD-10 AN, 16 (age 19-30 years) participated in the ADOS-2, a video-recorded, semistructured diagnostic assessment for social communication and interaction and restricted, repetitive behaviors and interests related to ASD. None of the participants had previously been diagnosed with ASD. Other measurements included the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire and the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence-IV. RESULTS Five individuals (18% of all, 31% of those assessed) scored above the cutoff for autism in ADOS-2. They had challenges in social communication and interaction, manifesting as sustained difficulties in social relationships and deficits in conversation skills. Few described being frequently misunderstood by others, including in the eating disorder treatment settings. Three individuals showed prominent restricted and repetitive behaviors such as ritual seeking, eating-related routines, sensory sensitivity related to food texture and selective eating, and intense interest in specific topics. The mean duration of AN in women above the cutoff was twice as long compared with those below (12.3 vs. 6.2 years). DISCUSSION The ASD-related characteristics and behavior appear to contribute to the manifestation and duration of AN in a subgroup of women. Among these women, the traits of ASD appear to be mixed with eating disorder symptoms, which should be taken into account in the treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Girls/women with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are suggested to exhibit different symptom profiles than boys/men with ASD. Accumulating evidence suggests that intellectual disability (ID) may affect sex/gender differences in ASD. However, a systematic review and meta-analysis on this topic is missing. METHODS Two databases (MEDLINE and PsycINFO) were used to search for studies reporting sex/gender differences (girls/women versus boys/men) in social communication and interaction, restrictive and repetitive behaviour and interests (RRBIs), sensory processing, and linguistic and motor abilities in ASD. The final sample consisted of 79 studies. The meta-analysis was performed with Review Manager using a random-effects model. Participants with ASD without and with ID were analysed as separate subgroups, and the effects in these two subgroups were also compared with each other. RESULTS Girls/women with ASD without ID displayed fewer RRBIs, more sensory symptoms and less problems in linguistic abilities than their boys/men counterparts. In contrast, girls/women with ASD with ID displayed more social difficulties and RRBIs, poorer linguistic abilities and more motor problems than boys/men with ASD with ID. Comparisons of groups of participants with ASD without ID versus participants with ASD with ID confirmed differences in sex/gender effects on social difficulties, sensory processing, linguistic abilities and motor abilities. CONCLUSIONS Our results clearly suggest that the female phenotype of ASD is moderated by ID. Among individuals with ASD with ID, girls/women seem to be more severely affected than boys/men, whereas among individuals with ASD without ID, girls/women with ASD may have less symptoms than boys/men. Such phenotypic differences could be a potential cause of underrecognition of girls/women with ASD, and it is also possible that observed phenotypic differences may reflect underdiagnosing of girls/women with ASD.

Abstract
PURPOSE Anorexia nervosa (AN) is associated with challenges in recognizing, understanding, and interpreting one's own and other's emotional states, feelings, and thoughts. It is unknown whether difficulties in emotion processing occur independently of common comorbid symptoms of AN and predict acute eating disorder characteristics. We aimed to examine emotion recognition, alexithymia, emotion regulation, and empathy in individuals with AN and to assess whether these predict eating disorder symptoms independently from comorbid symptoms. METHODS Participants included 42 women with AN and 40 healthy control (HC) women between 18-30 years. Basic and complex emotion recognition was assessed with face photos and video clips. Alexithymia, empathy, emotion regulation, and comorbid symptoms (anxiety, depressive, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms and ASD traits) were assessed with self-assessment questionnaires. RESULTS Participants with AN exhibited difficulties in basic and complex emotion recognition, as well as increased alexithymia, decreased empathy, and challenges in emotion regulation when compared to HCs. After controlling for comorbid symptoms, differences remained only in complex emotion recognition. Challenges in emotion recognition were associated with lower body mass index, and increased alexithymia was associated with increased eating disorder symptoms. Increased challenges in emotion regulation were associated with a shorter duration of illness, higher body mass index, and increased eating disorder symptoms. CONCLUSIONS Participants with AN displayed widespread deficit in emotion processing, but only challenges in complex emotion recognition occurred independently from comorbid symptoms. Deficits in emotion processing may contribute to the illness severity and thus could be an important treatment target. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level III, case-control analytic study.

Abstract
Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a potentially severe eating disorder whose core characteristics include energy intake restriction leading to low body weight. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder characterized by deficits in social interaction and communication as well as repetitive, stereotyped behavior and interests. Both high ASD traits and diagnosed ASD are overrepresented among individuals with AN, and AN and ASD appear to share certain neurocognitive features. These features are associated with the severity of eating disorder symptoms and prolongation of AN. Thus, individuals with AN and high ASD traits or ASD may benefit less from traditional treatment when compared to those with low ASD traits. No previous reviews have summarized what is known about treatment adaptations for individuals with AN and high ASD traits or ASD. The purpose of this narrative review was to investigate the feasibility of cognitive remediation therapy (CRT), cognitive remediation and emotional skill training (CREST), and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and give an overview of treatment modifications for individuals with AN and co-occurring ASD or high ASD traits. We found nine studies that fulfilled our inclusion criteria. The combined results suggest that individuals with AN and high ASD traits or ASD benefit less from CRT, CREST, and CBT than those with AN and low ASD traits. However, CRT and CREST administered in individual format may be associated with improved cognitive flexibility, motivation for change, and decreased alexithymia among adults with AN and high ASD traits or ASD. Individuals with comorbid AN and ASD themselves highlight the importance of treatment adaptations that take the characteristics of ASD into account. In the future, controlled studies of the treatment strategies for individuals with AN and ASD/high ASD traits are needed in order to improve the outcome of individuals with this challenging comorbidity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Elevated autism spectrum disorder (ASD) traits are associated with anorexia nervosa (AN). Conversely, eating disturbances, which are core characteristics of AN, are common in ASD. Among individuals with ASD, atypical sensory processing is associated with eating disturbance. Because AN and ASD appear to overlap, it would be crucial to understand whether sensory processing atypicality exist also in AN. Further, it would be essential to find if atypical sensory processing is associated with eating disturbances in individuals with AN, since treatment modifications may be needed. We therefore aimed to examine whether atypical sensory processing is associated with AN and its core characteristics. METHODS Participants of the current study included 42 individuals with AN and 40 healthy controls (HCs). All participants were adult women. Sensory processing, other ASD traits, and eating disorder symptoms were assessed with self-report questionnaires. RESULTS Individuals with AN reported lower registration, decreased sensation seeking, increased sensory sensitivity, and increased sensation avoiding compared to HCs. When analyzing groups with restrictive AN (AN-R) and binge-purge type AN (AN-BP) separately, only individuals with AN-R exhibited decreased sensation seeking, and only those with AN-BP exhibited lower registration. After controlling for body mass index as a covariate, group differences remained significant only in sensory sensitivity between individuals with AN and HCs. Increased atypical sensory processing predicted lower body mass index and increased disordered eating. CONCLUSION Results suggest that sensory processing appears to differ between AN and HC women, and AN subtypes may exhibit distinct sensory processing atypicality. Sensory sensitivity may be stable traits whereas other aspects of atypical sensory processing may be related to acute AN. Atypical sensory processing may contribute to the severity of AN, and thus it is crucial to recognize sensory processing differences when treating individuals with AN.

Abstract
Autism and psychopathy are both disorders of social cognition and share numerous of their features but still differ distinctively in their clinical phenotype. The lower grey matter volumes in the right temporal pole and the left inferior frontal gyrus are the most prominent findings distinguishing violent offenders with high psychopatic from ASD individuals. Violent offenders with high psychopatic traits and individuals with ASD both present similar lower grey matter volumes in the right precentral cortex compared to controls.
The goal of this study was to elucidate the anatomical brain basis of social cognition through two disorders with distinctively different phenotypes of social interaction. We compared structural MR images of 20 individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), 19 violent offenders with high psychopathic traits, and 19 control participants using voxel-based morphometry (VBM). Our earlier study showed lower grey matter volume (GMV) values in the insula, frontal cortex, and sensorimotor cortex of the offender group compared to controls. In the present study, the images of the ASD group revealed lower GMV in the left precuneus, right cerebellum, and right precentral gyrus in comparison with controls. The comparison between the offender and ASD groups showed lower GMV values for the right temporal pole and left inferior frontal gyrus in the offender group. There was also an overlap of both disorders in the right pre-central cortex, showing lower GMV compared to controls. Our findings suggest structural differences between violent offenders with high psychopathy traits and ASD individuals in the frontotemporal social brain network areas, previously associated with empathy. We also provide evidence of similar abnormal structures in the motor cortex for both of these disorders, possibly related to uniting issues of social cognition.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Traits of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are overrepresented among individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) and may also moderate the behavioral manifestation of AN. This review aims to provide an overview of AN and comorbid ASD. RECENT FINDINGS Elevated ASD traits do not seem to precede AN among some individuals but are rather related to the illness stage. However, studies have suggested that there are ASD-specific mechanisms for developing AN in a subgroup of individuals with AN. Pronounced traits of ASD and diagnosed ASD are associated with illness prolongation and poorer outcomes in AN, and individuals with AN and elevated ASD traits may benefit less from many of the current treatments. Studies do not support a specific genetic relationship between ASD and AN. SUMMARY Recent research encourages the improved recognition of elevated ASD traits in individuals with AN and provides grounds for developing tailored treatments for those with this comorbidity.

OBJECTIVE Anorexia nervosa (AN) is associated with neuropsychological characteristics such as impairments in central coherence, cognitive flexibility, and emotion recognition. The same features also manifest in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and have been suggested to be associated with illness prolongation in AN. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to examine whether pronounced neuropsychological characteristics related to ASD are associated with illness duration in AN. METHOD Four databases (Medline, PsycINFO, Scopus, PubMed) were searched for eligible studies. Search terms were (a) "anorexia nervosa" and (b) "cognitive flexibility" or "set-shifting" or "central coherence" or "emotion recognition" or "theory of mind". The final sample consisted of 53 studies. Duration of AN was divided into three categories in order to investigate differences between the groups with varying illness duration. The meta-analysis was performed with Review Manager using a random-effects model. RESULTS Deficits in central coherence, cognitive flexibility, and emotion recognition were pronounced among individuals with prolonged AN compared to those with shorter illness duration. DISCUSSION A prolonged course of AN appears to be associated with underlying neuropsychological characteristics that are also distinctive to ASD. Neuropsychological impairments may lead to prolonged AN, and prolonged illness may contribute to the subsequent "neurological scar effect," further strengthening these impairments.

Abstract
Introduction: Slow-wave sleep (SWS) slow waves and sleep spindle activity have been shown to be crucial for memory consolidation. Recently, memory consolidation has been causally facilitated in human participants via auditory stimuli phase-locked to SWS slow waves. Aims: Here, we aimed to develop a new acoustic stimulus protocol to facilitate learning and to validate it using different memory tasks. Most importantly, the stimulation setup was automated to be applicable for ambulatory home use. Methods: Fifteen healthy participants slept 3 nights in the laboratory. Learning was tested with 4 memory tasks (word pairs, serial finger tapping, picture recognition, and face-name association). Additional questionnaires addressed subjective sleep quality and overnight changes in mood. During the stimulus night, auditory stimuli were adjusted and targeted by an unsupervised algorithm to be phase-locked to the negative peak of slow waves in SWS. During the control night no sounds were presented. Results: Results showed that the sound stimulation increased both slow wave (p = .002) and sleep spindle activity (p < .001). When overnight improvement of memory performance was compared between stimulus and control nights, we found a significant effect in word pair task but not in other memory tasks. The stimulation did not affect sleep structure or subjective sleep quality. Conclusions: We showed that the memory effect of the SWS-targeted individually triggered single-sound stimulation is specific to verbal associative memory. Moreover, the ambulatory and automated sound stimulus setup was promising and allows for a broad range of potential follow-up studies in the future.

Abstract
The brain is constantly generating predictions of future sensory input to enable efficient adaptation. In the auditory domain, this applies also to the processing of speech. Here we aimed to determine whether the brain predicts the following segments of speech input on the basis of language-specific phonological rules that concern non-adjacent phonemes. Auditory event-related potentials (ERP) were recorded in a mismatch negativity (MMN) paradigm, where the Finnish vowel harmony, determined by the first syllables of pseudowords, either constrained or did not constrain the phonological composition of pseudoword endings. The phonological rule of vowel harmony was expected to create predictions about phonologically legal pseudoword endings. Results showed that MMN responses were larger for phonologically illegal than legal pseudowords, and P3a was elicited only for illegal pseudowords. This supports the hypothesis that speech input is evaluated against context-dependent phonological predictions that facilitate speech processing.

Abstract
A longitudinal study was performed on eleven persons, who had been chronically exposed to mercury (Hg) (3 to 31 years, median 5 years) in 1977, 1980 resp., and 1982. During their work in a chemical plant they had had contact to elemental Hg and various inorganic as well as organic mercury compounds. The main purpose of the investigation was the evaluation of possible adverse effects to the nervous system caused by mercury. The internal Hg-exposure was measured by mercury analysis in blood (Hg-B) and in urine (Hg-U). Furthermore "time-weighted average" levels were calculated on the basis of former Hg-determinations from 1974 to 1982. For Hg-B these values ranged between 26 and 104 microgram/dl (median 42 microgram/l) and for Hg-U between 73 and 434 microgram/g creatinine (median 233 microgram/g creatinine) (upper normal levels: Hg-B: 5 microgram/l; Hg-U: 5 microgram/g creatinine). The determination of the peripheral nerve conduction velocities (NLG) of motor and sensory fibers as well as the registration of somatosensory-evoked potentials (SEP) revealed no pathological results, except one borderline case. The NLG- and SEP-values did not significantly differ from those of non exposed persons or from those of former NLG-determinations. No correlations were found between indicators of Hg-exposure and neurophysiological parameters regarding dose-effect-relationship. Statistical differences resulted in the time-dependent test of the psychological test battery performed in comparison to age-matched control persons of equal socio-economous status. In additional, significant relationships were calculated between Hg-exposure and these tests. Considering the inter- and intraindividual variations of the psychological test results, there were no substantial alterations in the total findings over the observed period except for one case. Workers with Hg-exposure below the current BAT-values (Hg-B 50 microgram/l, Hg-U 200 microgram/l) showed no pathological findings in the neurological, neurophysiological and neuropsychological examinations.

Abstract
We studied 31 employees (26 men, five women) from three firms, between the ages of 16 and 56 years, who had been exposed to trichloroethylene (TRI) from 1 month to 35 years, mean 7 years. To objectify the actual solvent-exposure we performed "biological monitoring" and determined TRI- and the metabolites trichloroethanol (TCE) and trichloroacetic acid (TCA) in blood- and/or urine-samples. The following concentrations were found in the urine-samples: TCE 19.0-357.0 mg/g creatinine, median 90.0; TCA 2.0-201.0 mg/g creatinine, median 48.0; TTC (TCE + TCA) 31.0-416.0 mg/g creatinine, median 112.5. Additionally three results of former urine-analyses in the period 1978-1980 from 10 workers were obtained to calculate "time-weighted-average (TWA)"-levels (TWA-TTC in urine: 53-640 mg/g creatinine). Nerve conduction velocity (NLG)-measurements of motor and/or sensory fibers of the ulnar and median nerve were performed to test peripheral nerve function. Seven employees were excluded. They had possible competitive risks of peripheral neuropathy, or were of less than 10 months exposed. For controls we examined 24 healthy persons of identical sex and age (matched pairs), but without known risks of a peripheral neuropathy. In comparing the nerve conduction velocities there were no significant differences between TRI-exposed and non-exposed persons. Correlation analyses and the individual assessment of the data concerning exposure/dose and effect revealed no signs of a "dose-effect-relationship".
