Abstract
Background Coats plus syndrome, cerebroretinal microangiopathy with calcifications and cysts, is a rare disease with autosomal recessive pattern occurring due to a mutation in CTC1, encoding conserved telomere maintenance component 1, gene. Besides retinal involvement, abnormalities in brain and osteopenia, serious life-threatening bleeding in gastrointestinal tract and portal hypertension can be observed. Case presentation A 6-year-old girl with Coats plus syndrome presented to the pediatric emergency department with vomiting blood and blood in stool. An upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed esophageal varices and vascular telangiectasia in the pyloric antrum, duodenum, and colon. She received palliative care and the bleeding was stopped after receiving intravenous octreotide. She then was followed in the pediatric gastroenterology, neurology, and ophthalmology clinics. She was later hospitalized and admitted to the intensive care unit as she continued to have intermittent gastrointestinal system bleeding. She eventually died due to severe gastrointestinal system bleeding. Conclusions Coats plus syndrome can lead to life-threatening gastrointestinal bleeding and portal hypertension. As Coats plus syndrome is quite rare, there is little published data on this syndrome. This report presents a case of Coats plus syndrome as a rare cause of gastrointestinal bleeding and portal hypertension.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
It was previously demonstrated that in patients with ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) high-sensitive troponin-T (Hs-cTnT) makes two peaks. However, the clinical significance of the second peak (early vs late) in patients undergoing successful primary percutaneous intervention (pPCI) is not known. We investigated the role of early second peak on clinical outcomes.
Methods
Patients who underwent successful pPCI were included. Baseline characteristics, angiographic variables and kinetics of Hs-cTnT levels following pPCI were recorded. Second peak of Hs-cTnT was defined as re-elevation of troponin levels above plateau levels. The second peak of Hs-cTnT is defined as early second peak, if re-elevation is detected earlier than 72 hours after the diagnosis and late second peak, when re-elevation is detected later than 72 hours.
Results
We included 250 patients divided into two groups; patients with early second peak as group 1 (n=118) and rest of the patients as group 2 (n=132). Baseline characteristics and comorbidities were similar. Peak level of Hs-cTnT, Hs-CRP and pro-BNP levels were significantly lower in group 1 patients. Left ventricular ejection fraction was higher in group 1 patients (47.48±7.7 vs 43.80±9.3, p-value: 0.001). There was no significant difference with respect to new-onset heart failure (24% vs %28, p: 0.503) between groups however cardiac mortality was significantly lower in group 1 patients (%2 vs %11, p: 0.007).
Conclusion
The early second peak of Hs-cTnT in patients with STEMI is associated with successful reperfusion and predictors of better clinical outcome. Moreover, early second peak of Hs-cTnT is associated with decreased cardiac mortality and has a potential to be used as a marker of good prognosis.

Abstract
AbstractPituitary stalk interruption syndrome is a congenital anomaly characterized by interrupted or thin pituitary stalk, hypoplastic or absent anterior pituitary, and an absent or ectopic posterior pituitary gland. The exact incidence rate of this syndrome is not known. However, the estimated incidence rate is 0.5/1,000,000 births. In this case report, we wanted to present a case of interrupted pituitary stalk syndrome, which presented with seizures and thyroid hormone deficiency. A 5-year-old female patient was admitted to our emergency department with vomiting, fever, and seizures with new onset. She had a twin who was ex-utero intrapartum in taken history. She was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and started on levothyroxine. Her height was in 25 to 50th percentile and her weight was in 10 to 25th percentile. She had mild mental retardation. On contrast-enhanced cranial magnetic resonance imaging scan, the pituitary stalk was absent, posterior pituitary was ectopic, and anterior pituitary was hypoplastic. The patient was diagnosed with interrupted pituitary stalk syndrome. After the symptoms were relieved, patient started on carbamazepine for epileptic seizures and hormone replacement therapy with levothyroxine and hydrocortisone. She was routinely followed up after the proper diagnosis. Leuprolide (gonadotropin-releasing hormone) and Norditropin (biosynthetic growth hormone) were added to medical therapy. Her height and weight were in 25th percentile after the long-term follow-up of approximately 10 years. On neurological examination, situation of mild mental retardation persisted. Pituitary stalk interruption syndrome is a very rare entity. However, radiologists should keep this syndrome in mind for patients who present with hypoglycemia, seizures, jaundice, cryptorchidism, and hypothyroidism in neonatal period and growth retardation with pituitary hormone deficiencies in childhood.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Central tegmental tract is an extrapyramidal tract between red nucleus and inferior olivary nucleus which is located in the tegmentum pontis bilaterally and symmetrically. The etiology of the presence of central tegmental tract hyperintensity on MRI is unclear. PURPOSE In this study our aim is to evaluate the frequency of central tegmental tract lesions in patients with cerebral palsy and control group, as well as to determine whether there is an association between central tegmental tract lesions and cerebral palsy types. MATERIALS AND METHODS Clinical and MRI data of 200 patients with cerebral palsy in study group (87 female, 113 male; mean age, 5.81years; range, 0-16years) and 258 patients in control group (114 female, 144 male; mean age, 6.28years; range, 0-16years) were independently evaluated by two reader for presence of central tegmental tract hyperintensity and other associated abnormalities. RESULTS Central tegmental tract hyperintensities on T2WI were detected in 19% of the study group (38/200) and 3.5% of the control group (9/258) (p<0.0001). Among the total of 38 central tegmental tract lesions in study group, the frequency of central tegmental tract hyperintensity was 16% (24/150) in spastic cerebral palsy and 35% (14/40) in dyskinetic cerebral palsy (p=0.0131). CONCLUSION The prevalence of central tegmental tract hyperintensity is higher in patients with cerebral palsy particularly in dyskinetic type. We suggest that there is an increased association of the tegmental lesions with dyskinetic CP. Patients with cerebral palsy and ischemic changes were more likely to have central tegmental tract lesions. According to our results we advocate that an ischemic process may have a role in the etiopathogenesis.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Liliequist membrane (LM) is the most important anatomic structure for the success of endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV). Identification of this membrane is difficult with conventional MRI techniques. The purpose of this retrospective study is to determine the impact of three-dimensional sampling perfection with application-optimized contrasts using different flip-angle evolutions (3D-SPACE) sequence with variant flip-angle mode (VFAM) in the assessment of LM at 3-T MRI devices. METHODS 3D-SPACE with VFAM images were obtained in 445 patients. LM visibility and integrity were scored as 0 (good), 1 (moderate), and 2 (poor) on these images for each parts (sellar, diencephalic, and mesencephalic) and overall of the membrane. RESULTS According to the LM overall integrity scores, 11 % (48 cases) of the patients had perforated membrane. According to subsegmental integrity scores, sellar part was completely intact in 63 % of patients, diencephalic segment was completely intact in 60 % of the patients, and mesencephalic segment was completely intact in 95 % of the patients. Visibility scores of the third ventricle inferior wall were significantly higher in the patients with intact LM (p = 0.001). There was not any statistically significant relationship between LM pattern and overall integrity (p = 0.352). LM attachment sites could be detected easier in the patients who had better visibility of third ventricle inferior wall or intact LM (p < 0.001 for both). CONCLUSION 3D-SPACE technique is a useful alternative for the evaluation of morphology, integrity, individual variations, topographic relationships, and visibility of LM since it has some advantages including lower SAR values, fewer artifacts, and high-resolution images.

Abstract
In this case report we present an adolescent girl who was referred to our radiology department for assessment with advanced magnetic resonance (MR) imaging on suspicion of low-grade quadrigeminal cistern neoplasm on 1.5 Tesla MR examination. We were able to evaluate detailed cerebellar anatomy more clearly, and detected that the lesion was compatible with ectopic cerebellar tissue (a very rare developmental variation) on submillimetric 3-dimensional (3D) images from a 3 Tesla MR unit which has a 32-channel head coil. Our findings were further supported by diffusion tensor imaging which clearly indicated that the lesion was a part of the cerebellum. Furthermore, MR spectroscopic metabolite ratios were in accordance with the characteristics of normal neuronal tissue. As far we know there is no published report that contains similar findings to those of our patient. In conclusion, cranial MR images, if possible in 3D format (with very small isotropic voxels) should be obtained for the precise diagnosis of the lesions located in this region; in addition, the differential diagnostic list should be well known and advanced imaging techniques should be used when necessary.

Abstract
Backround The purpose of our study is to examine the correlation of the residual red bone marrow areas of distal femoral metaphysis with the age, gender, weight and hemoglobin (hgb) values; evaluate the results, and comprehend the importance of these residual areas in the light of the results. Material/Methods 140 nonsmoking patients between the ages of 26 and 72 (92 women, 48 men) who had knee MR examinations were included in the study. The residual red bone marrow areas in the distal femoral metaphysis in MR images were examined by a radiologist. The areas were separated into grades according to their sizes. The hemoglobin values of the cases were measured. The size of the residual red bone marrow area and the age, gender, weight and hemoglobin values of the cases were compared by using the Tukey and Chi-Square Tests. Results Although no significant differences were observed between the mean ages, weights and hemoglobin values of the grades, a significant difference was detected between the gender distribution The male group had less residual red bone marrow in the distal femoral metaphysis than the female group (p=0.003). Conclusions We observed that the hypointensities due to residual red bone marrow observed in the T1WS of the distal femoral metaphysis are not related with the age, weight and hemoglobin values. No grade 2 and grade 3 patient was detected in male group. We observed that these hypointense areas showed difference according to the gender variable; however, were not affected by the hemoglobin values over certain levels.

Abstract
OBJECT
The goal of this study was to determine the value of the 3D sampling perfection with application-optimized contrasts using different flip-angle evolutions (3D-SPACE) technique in the evaluation of endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) patency.
METHODS
Twenty-six patients with ETV were examined using 3-T MRI units. Sagittal-plane 3D-SPACE with variant flip-angle mode, 3D T1-weighted (T1W), and 3D heavily T2-weighted (T2W) images were obtained with isotropic voxel sizes. Also, sagittal-axial plane phase-contrast cine (PC)-MR images were obtained. The following findings were evaluated: diameters of stoma and third ventricle, flow-void sign on 3D-SPACE and PC-MR images, integrity of the third ventricle on heavily T2W images, and quantitative PC-MRI parameters of the stoma. Obtained sequences were evaluated singly, in combination with one another, and all together.
RESULTS
The mean area, flow, and velocity values measured at the level of stoma in patients with patent stoma were significantly higher than those measured in patients with closed stoma (p < 0.05). There was significant correlation among PC-MRI, 3D-SPACE, and 3D heavily T2W techniques regarding assessment of ETV patency (p < 0.001). The 3D-SPACE technique provided the lowest rate of ambiguous results.
CONCLUSIONS
The 3D-SPACE technique seems to be the most efficient one for determination of ETV patency. The authors suggest the use of 3D-SPACE as a stand-alone first-line sequence in addition to routine brain MRI protocols in assessing patients with ETV, thereby decreasing scan time and reserving the use of a combination of additional sequences such as PC-MRI and 3D heavily T2W images in suspicious or complex cases.

Abstract
Cholecystenteric fistula is one of the rarest complications of biliary lithiasis, with a frequency of less than 1%. Bouveret syndrome is a gastric outlet obstruction produced by gallstone(s) located in the distal stomach or proximal duodenum. The route of gallstone migration to the bowel is most commonly via a cholecystoduodenal fistula; however, fistulization of the stomach is a rarer variation. Early diagnosis of this situation is crucial to reduce morbidity and mortality. In this report, we present a patient with cholecystogastric fistula and Bouveret syndrome. To our knowledge, there is no published paper in the literature related to the diagnosis of Bouveret syndrome with multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) (64 detectors) and/or contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (CE-MRCP). Our aim was to discuss the efficacy of MDCT and CE-MRCP in the detection and evaluation of cholecystenteric fistulas. We showed the exact localization and relation of biliary stones and the fistula by MDCT and CE-MRCP. We also evaluated the biliary system with CE-MRCP physiologically. In conclusion, when biliary lithiasis and ileus are detected in plain radiography, the first-line diagnostic tool should be MDCT. In complicated cases or when biliary obstruction is suspected, CE-MRCP can give important morphological and physiological information regarding the whole abdomen and biliary system.

Abstract
Hypertrophic column of Bertin (HCB) may mimic renal mass and may lead to unnecessary nephrectomy in some conditions. In this case report we present a patient with HCB, which mimics renal mass in ultrasonography (US) examination with its US, Doppler US and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings. In contrast to the US, excretory urography (EU) and computed tomography (CT) findings of HCB, MRI findings of this entity could not take part in the literature sufficiently. We suggest that this case report could be useful in preventing the unnecessary biopsy and surgical procedures. In conclusion, however, US is often sufficient in the diagnosis of HCB, unusual lesions could be seen. In the final diagnosis of these lesions, MRI is very useful and more responsive technique. Understanding the imaging characteristics of HCB could prevent unnecessary interventional or surgical procedures.

Abstract
Pseudoaneurysms rarely occur as a serious complication following incomplete hemostasis of an arterial puncture site. As a result of the increase in diagnostic and therapeutic angiography, the frequency of iatrogenic pseudoaneurysm has increased as well. Iatrogenic pseudoaneurysms associated with angiographic catheterization occur most commonly in the common femoral artery. Here we report a case of iatrogenic superficial external pudendal artery (SEPA) pseudoaneurysm following cardiac catheterization, which was diagnosed with Doppler ultrasound (US) and multidetector computed tomographic angiography (MDCTA) before Doppler US-guided compression therapy. To the best of our knowledge, iatrogenic SEPA pseudoaneurysm, which is an unusual vessel location for pseudoaneurysm occurrence, has not been reported in the literature. In patients in whom anticoagulant-thrombolytic therapy or therapeutic catheterization with larger sized sheath is planned, determination of the precise localization of arterial puncture site is important for the prevention of iatrogenic pseudoaneurysm development. Arterial puncture guided with Doppler US might reduce complications. When suspected, MDCTA is useful in the diagnosis and demonstration of iatrogenic pseudoaneurysms. Treatment of US-guided compression should be the first choice for iatrogenic pseudoaneurysms. Interventional radiologists and cardiologists should have enough experience about the catheterization complications and their treatment in order to decrease the morbidity and mortality related to the intervention.

Abstract
We investigated the protective effects of L-carnitine on hippocampus tissue damage in rats during experimental formaldehyde (FA) intoxication. Male Wistar albino rats were assigned into four groups: (1) control (C), (2) formaldehyde (FA), (3) formaldehyde + 0.5 g/kg of L-carnitine (FA + 0.5 LC) (4) formaldehyde + 1 g/kg L-carnitine (FA + 1 LC). At the end of the 14 day trial period, animals were sacrificed by decapitation under anesthesia. The hippocampus tissue samples were extracted to measure MDA, GSH and SOD activity. Neuronal degeneration was assessed based on histopathological (hematoxylin and eosin) and immunohistochemical (anti-ubiquitin) examination. To detect oxidative stress, specimens were reacted with anti-Cu/Zn-SOD antibody. After administering L-carnitine with FA to the animals, the activities of SOD and GSH increased, but the levels of MDA decreased in hippocampus tissue. Neuronal degeneration was observed in the FA group. L-carnitine administration reduced neuronal degeneration and histological structure was similar to controls. After FA application, degenerated hippocampus neurons were stained with anti-ubiquitin and Cu/Zn-SOD antibodies; weakly positive staining was observed in L- carnitine-treated groups. L-carnitine may be useful for preventing oxidative damage in the hippocampus tissue due to formaldehyde intoxication.

Abstract
Uterine leiomyomas are the most common gynecological tumors in adult women. These benign tumors are rarely seen in the adolescent population: there are only a few cases that have been reported so far in this age group. In this case report, we present a giant uterine leiomyoma that mimicked an ovarian tumor in a 15-year-old girl.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many studies in literature point out that inflammation related to nasal polyp is mostly dependent on eosinophils and their inflammatory products. Beside eosinophils, platelets may have a role in nasal polyp development. Platelets are involved in haemostasis, tissue repairing and inflammation. However, to our knowledge, there are no reports in the literature that study the association between platelet parameters and nasal polyps. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Forty-three patients with nasal polyps and forty-nine healthy controls were enrolled in the study, retrospectively. Laboratory data of patients with nasal polyp were obtained at the time of diagnosis. RESULTS There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in terms of white blood count, haemoglobin, haematocrit and platelet count. The mean platelet volume (MPV) value of the nasal polyp group was significantly lower than the control group (p = 0.025). Mean eosinophil count was significantly elevated in the nasal polyp group compared to the control group (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Reduction in MPV may be an indicator for nasal polyp formation. Further studies with a larger study population are needed to detect the possible correlation between eosinophil count and MPV values in patients with nasal polyps.

Abstract
Colloid cysts are among rare benign tumours of the third ventricle. Although the most frequent symptoms are headache and syncope, arrest hydrocephalus or sudden death could appear with colloid cysts. The aim of this pictorial essay was to increase awareness of the clinical presentation, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging spectrum, and treatment options of the colloid cysts. The data of 11 patients with histopathologically and/or clinically proven colloid cyst were analysed, retrospectively; and the neuroradiologic appearances of the cysts were evaluated. The CT and MR appearance of colloid cysts may change, depending on the viscosity or the cholesterol content of the cysts. However, the cystic content is the most important factor that could affect the success of treatment. Cysts that are especially rich in protein and cholesterol tend to be hyperdense on CT, hypointense on T2-weighted sequences and hyperintense on T1-weighted sequences. These cysts are viscous, and the success of aspiration is significantly low. In the diagnosis and evaluation of small-sized cysts that have an ingredient similar to cerebrospinal fluid, 3-dimensional sequences might be useful. The radiologic appearances of colloid cysts could play an important role in directing these patients to alternative surgical modalities, including resection.

Abstract
Virchow-Robin spaces are lesions often seen in the brain parenchyma but their etiopathogenesis remains unsettled. Giant Virchow-Robin spaces placed in the midbrain are extremely rare. We describe three patients with a diagnosis of giant Virchow-Robin spaces in the midbrain, and their clinical and radiologic findings. We reviewed the literature in terms of the etiopathology, anatomic and radiologic appearance and differential diagnosis of the giant Virchow-Robin spaces. The diagnostic role of the high Tesla magnetic resonance devices and new sequences techniques such as three dimensional isotropic acquisition and diffusion tensor imaging were also evaluated in this case series.

Abstract
Urinary fistulas and leakages of lower urinary tract are serious complications of various surgical procedures. Radiologists need to have enough information about these situations to perform precise diagnosis and treatment. Various techniques [such as intravenous pyelography, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), CT urography, cystoscopy, cystography and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging] are used for the diagnosis of these conditions. Application of all these techniques reduces the comfort and cooperation of the patients and increases the cost. Here we present four postoperative patients with lower urinary tract fistula or leakage. To the best of our knowledge, there is no report regarding the use of contrast-material-enhanced MR urography (CE-MRU) in the demonstration of postoperative lower urinary tract fistulae and leakages. In conclusion, CE-MRU could show the existence and location of the urinary fistulae and leakages clearly without the need for another investigation technique, as described in our patients. Also, CE-MRU is a safe and relatively inexpensive technique that avoids exposure to radiation as well as nephrotoxic and more allergic contrast-material administration.

Abstract
Desmoid tumors (DTs) are benign tumors which are not seen very often, and most of the radiologists and clinicians do not know the characteristics of them very well. Correct and early diagnosis of DTs is important for decreasing mortality and morbidity. Computed tomography enterography (CTE) is a new modality for small bowel imaging which combines the improved spatial and temporal resolution of multidetector computed tomography (CT) with large volumes of ingested enteric contrast material to permit evaluation of the small bowel wall and lumen and also the entire abdomen. We report a familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) patient with localized mesentery and abdominal wall DTs. We showed the exact location of the DTs and their relation with the small bowel by CTE. In conclusion, CTE is a useful technique for DT localization, the degree of extension and invasion to local structures, presence of partial and complete small bowel obstruction, and the relationship of the tumors with vasculature and whether ischemia has occurred as a result or not.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To measure the oxidant/antioxidant status of newborn babies with oesophageal atresia and their mothers, compared with healthy control subjects. METHODS: This case—control study included 40 participants: 10 newborns with oesophageal atresia and their mothers, and 10 healthy newborns and their mothers. Whole blood malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and the activities of antioxidant enzymes (catalase, carbonic anhydrase [CA], glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase [G-6-PD], and superoxide dismutase [SOD]) were measured. RESULTS: MDA levels and CA activity were significantly higher, and catalase, SOD and G-6-PD activities were significantly lower, in newborns with oesophageal atresia and their mothers than in healthy newborns and their mothers. Although CA activity was similar between the newborns and mothers in the patient group, it was significantly lower in newborns than in mothers in the healthy group. CONCLUSIONS: Increased lipid peroxidation might play an important role in the pathogenesis of oesophageal atresia. Impairment of the free radical/antioxidant balance may lead to increased free radical and decreased antioxidant levels in oesophageal atresia.

Abstract
The diagnosis of chronic radiation enteritis (CRE) is considerably challenging both for clinicians and radiologists. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of magnetic resonance enterography (MRE) in the diagnosis of CRE. To the best of our knowledge, there are no reports on the role of MRE in the diagnosis of CRE specifically. In this report, we present MRE findings of 4 patients with CRE. The most important factors in CRE diagnosis are the clinical findings and medical history, but focal abnormal bowel loop in the region of a known radiation field is the most important information. This abnormal loop is generally located in the distal ileum as present in our patients. Other associated findings helpful for the diagnosis are small bowel thickening, contrast material enhancement in a long segment, mesenteric stranding and luminal narrowing. MRE can be sufficient and useful in the diagnosis of CRE and for treatment planning, especially in patients with significant comorbidities who have had radiotherapy in the past. Adding MRE into the diagnostic algorithm can be helpful in post-radiotherapy patients with acute/subacute gastrointestinal symptoms.

Abstract
Background: Extensive research has been performed regarding the association between platelet activity indices and various cardiovascular disorders. Less clear data, however, are present between these indices and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between platelet activity indices and DVT in a relatively large population. Methods: Mean platelet volume (MPV), mean platelet mass (MPM), and mean platelet component (MPC) were measured by an autoanalyzer in a total of 203 patients with DVT and the results were compared with 210 age- and sex-matched controls without DVT. Results: There were significant differences between the study and control groups in MPV (8.6 ± 1.3 fL vs 7.9 ± 0.5 fL [95% CI −0.82 to −0.44], P < .001, respectively), MPM (2.2 ± 0.3 pg vs 2.0 ± 0.1 pg [95% CI −0.20 to −0.11], P < .001, respectively), and MPC (24.9 ± 3.2 g/dL vs 26.3 ± 1.6 g/dL [95% CI 0.91 to 1.89], P < .001, respectively). These 3 platelet activity indices were also found to be significant predictors of the presence of DVT (all Ps < .001). Conclusion: In patients with DVT, the presence of DVT was closely associated with increased platelet activation. The MPV, MPM, and MPC may identify patients requiring aggressive antiplatelet treatment.

Abstract
A total of 25 (13 male, 12 female) adult, healthy Swiss albino mice were used to investigate the origin, course and anastomoses of coronary arteries. Coloured latex was injected into the aortic arch to enable these arteries to be clearly discerned. A. coronaria sinistra was larger than A. coronaria dextra. It was divided into a Ramus interventricularis paraconalis and a Ramus circumflexus sinister. However, in 2 specimens, the septal ramus, was observed to stem directly from the left coronary artery, and only 1 ventricular branch arose from the left circumflex. The collateral branches of the paraconal interventricular ramus had a larger diameter and more extensive distribution was observed in these specimens. The A. coronaria dextra was divided into a Ramus septalis and Ramus circumflexus dexter. The Ramus interventricularis subsinuosis was not detected in this study. The ventricular branches of the left coronary artery run intramyocardially whereas the branches of the right coronary artery course subendocardially.

Abstract
The drainage of the thoracic limb of the Van cat was performed by the superficial and deep vein systems. The superficial system was constituted by the cephalic vein and its branches. The deep vein system was constituted by the axillary vein and its branches. The two vein systems anastomosed with each other at various points along their courses. The cephalic vein emerged from the external jugular vein together with the superficial cervical vein. The axillary vein continued the subclavian vein. It ran caudoventrally and gave off the subscapular vein, at the level of the shoulder joint, then gave off two independent branches, which were the external thoracic veins. Then the rest of the vessel continued as the brachial vein. The thoracodorsal vein was formed by the communicate ramus vein which arose between the subscapular vein and the brachial vein. The cranial circumflex humeral vein arose double from the subscapular vein. One of them anastomosed with the deep brachial vein and the other one drained the biceps and the deep pectoral muscles. The cranial interosseous vein from the caudal aspects of the brachial vein and passed the interosseous space of the antebrachium then ran to the lateral aspect of the forearm. The caudal interosseous vein arose from the ulnar vein (in two specimens) and the median vein together with the ulnar vein (in two specimens) or independently from the median vein (in one specimen). Although many similarities were found in the veins of the thoracic limb of the Van cat as compared with the domestic cat, some significant differences were noted in the origin, course, anastomosing and ramification of veins of the thoracic limb.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Psychiatric comorbidity in patients with skin disorders has been reported. OBJECTIVE To find out the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in dermatology outpatients and to investigate the factors that affect the psychiatric symptoms. METHODS 256 patients attending our dermatology outpatient clinic completed a 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) following their dermatologic examination. A standardized personal interview was performed to establish a psychiatric diagnosis in patients sampled by using a stratified random sampling method. RESULTS The prevalence of psychiatric disorders was found to be 33.4% in the study group. The mean of the total GHQ scores of the sample group (n = 256 patients) was 3.656. The duration of the dermatologic complaints, sex of the subjects, localization of the lesions, and dermatologic diagnosis did not affect the total GHQ scores of the patients. CONCLUSION Psychiatric comorbidity in 33.4% of the dermatology outpatients indicates the need for considering emotional factors for an effective management of the cutaneous disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The reported prevalence of acne in adolescence is variable; improved treatment may have modified its prevalence and severity; acne has been related to psychiatric morbidity for many years. METHODS Two thousand six hundred and fifty-seven high school students were examined, and adolescents with acne were interviewed about the subject of acne vulgaris. The severity of acne was graded using the Global Acne Grading System (GAGS). The Hospital Anxiety and Depression (HAD) scale was evaluated for one of every two subjects with acne (n = 308) and for the same number of sex-matched control subjects (n = 308) to determine the prevalence of depression and anxiety. RESULTS Six hundred and fifteen of the subjects (23. 1%) were determined to have acne. Acne prevalence in girls and boys was 16.1% and 29.2%, respectively (P < 0.001). Two hundred and twenty-five (15.8%) of 1424 boys and only 109 (8.8%) of 1233 girls had moderate or severe/very severe acne (P < 0.001), but the GAGS scores in the groups of boys and girls with acne were not significantly different. The acne and control groups showed no significant differences in the HAD anxiety and depression subscale scores. The HAD anxiety subscale scores of girls were significantly higher than those of boys in the acne group. The severity of acne was not correlated with the HAD anxiety or depression subscale scores. CONCLUSIONS Acne results in higher anxiety in adolescent girls. Although acne and moderate/severe acne are more common in adolescent boys, the severity of acne was found to be similar in boys and girls with acne. Adolescent girls are more vulnerable than boys to the negative psychological effects of acne.

Abstract
Implantation of a permanent pacemaker requires a psychological effort on the patient's part for adaptation in the acute term, and chronically, it restricts activities of the patient and may cause some psychiatric disturbances. To investigate psychiatric morbidity and depressive symptomatology of the patients with permanent pacemakers, 84 pacemaker patients were diagnosed using the DSM-III-R criteria and depressive symptoms were determined by modified Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (mHDRS). Sixteen (19.1%) patients had been given a psychiatric diagnosis. The most frequent diagnoses were adjustment disorder (5.9%) and major depressive episode (4.7%). Nine patients (10.7%) were diagnosed as having clinical depression (mHDRS > or = 17). The mean score of mHDRS was 7.57 +/- 7.46, and the severity of depression was significantly higher in females. The most frequent symptoms are difficulties in work and activities (53.6%), psychic anxiety (48.8%), loss of energy (42.9%), and hypochondriasis and insomnia (39.3%). Depressed mood, psychic anxiety, loss of energy, loss of interest, insomnia, and hypochondriasis were significantly more frequent in females. Uneducated patients had a more significant loss of energy than educated patients. Depressed mood, psychic anxiety, and somatic concerns and symptoms were more frequent in patients with permanent pacemakers than in the general population. These symptoms, resembling mixed anxiety-depression disorder, were related to fears of having a permanent pacemaker, since our series were composed of uneducated patients who did not have enough knowledge about the device.

Abstract
Self-expandable metal stents (7 mm in diameter) combined with coaxial double-j stents were placed in 10 ureters in ten patients with malignant ureteral obstruction. After 2 and 3 months, when the double-j stents were removed in seven patients, six patients developed hydronephrosis and one patient tolerated removal of the double-j stent and had no signs of urinary obstruction until she died in the fifth month. A double-j stent was inserted again in six patients who developed hydronephrosis. Endoscopy performed during insertion of the double-j stents showed urothelial hyperplasia and incrustations which reduced the lumen of the metal stent. Their double-j stents were exchanged with new ones every 3 months. In the last three patients, double-j stents were not removed, but exchanged with new ones every 3 months. Endoscopy performed regularly during the exchange of the double-j stents in the follow-up of nine patients showed that urothelial hyperplasia, although mild, persisted until the sixth month in three patients. We conclude that urothelial hyperplasia and incrustations limit the use of metal stents in malignant ureteral obstruction. Metal stents, however, when used together with the coaxially placed double-j stents, contributed to the achievement of internal urinary drainage in this study. Since a metal stent provides a buttress for the previously obstructed segment of the ureter, the lumen, although decreased by hyperplasia and incrustations, is held open, which allows an easy exchange of the double-j stent. Regarding the high cost of metal stent, use of it with a coaxial double-j stent should be spared for the malignant ureteral obstructions when a previously placed double-j stent alone fails to achieve efficient drainage.

Abstract
This study examined appraisal of self and others, as measured by semantic differential ratings of Police, State, Society, Family, Friend, Myself as a Man/Woman, and Myself as a Political Person, in 55 tortured political activists in Turkey, 55 nontortured political activists, and 55 nontortured, politically noninvolved controls. There were no remarkable differences between tortured and nontortured political activists; both groups differed from controls in having a more negative appraisal of the police and the state and stronger perceptions of danger, mistrust, and injustice in relation to state authority. Lack of beliefs concerning a "benevolent state" may have protected the survivors from the traumatic effects of state-perpetrated torture. Further research into the possible protective role of belief systems in posttraumatic stress disorder is needed.

Abstract
A total of 65 women with ureteral stone who underwent ureteroscopy were divided randomly into two groups between April 1993 and March 1994. URS was performed under general anaesthesia in the first group (35 patients), and under local anaesthesia with sedation analgesia in the second group (30 patients). Only 2 patients of the second group did not tolerate the operation. The success rate was 88% in the first group and 83.3% in the second. There was no significant difference between the two groups. Since URS under local anaesthesia is time-saving, cost-effective, and highly tolerable in women, it is a good choice for ureteral stones.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine factors related to long-term psychological functioning in political ex-prisoners who had been subjected to systematic torture. DESIGN The psychological status of 55 tortured political activists, 55 nontortured political activists, and 55 subjects with no history of torture or political activism was assessed using Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III for psychiatric assessment, Semi-structured Interview for Survivors of Torture, and other self-rated and assessor-rated measures of anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Correlational and multiple regression analyses were used to assess the independent effects of precaptivity, captivity, and postcaptivity variables as predictors of long-term psychological status among the torture survivors. SETTING Istanbul, Turkey. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Number of lifetime and current PTSD symptoms, and scores on the Beck Depression Inventory, Hamilton Depression Rating, Hamilton Anxiety Scale, and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. RESULTS Effect of captivity experience on various life areas (eg, family and social, economic, and employment status) and other postcaptivity psychosocial stressors were associated with PTSD symptoms, anxiety, and depression. Perceived severity of torture was related to PTSD symptoms but not to anxiety or depression. Lack of social support predicted anxiety and depression but not PTSD. Family history of psychiatric illness correlated with higher scores on most measures. Impact of captivity experience on family was the strongest predictor of PTSD symptoms. CONCLUSIONS These findings point to three types of stressors related to different aspects of psychopathology in survivors of torture: perceived severity of torture, secondary effects of captivity experience on various life areas, and general psychosocial stressors following captivity. Different interventions may be needed for three components of survivors' traumatic experience: cognitive and behavioral strategies for treatment of PTSD symptoms, marital or family strategies for minimizing the impact of the trauma on the family, and strategies for enhancing social support to minimize postcaptivity depression and anxiety.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to investigate the long-term effects of torture in a group of former political prisoners. METHOD The study was carried out in Istanbul, Turkey, where 55 Turkish political activists who had been tortured were compared with a closely matched group of 55 activists who had not been tortured. The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R, the Semistructured Interview for Survivors of Torture, and other self-rated and assessor-rated measures of anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were used. The tortured and the nontortured activists were similar in age, sex, marital and socioeconomic status, political ideology, political involvement, stressful life events other than torture, and other features. RESULTS The torture survivors reported an average of 291 exposures to a mean of 23 forms of torture. The mean length of their imprisonment was 47 months. The survivors of torture had significantly more symptoms of PTSD and anxiety/depression than the nontortured comparison subjects, although their PTSD symptoms were only moderately severe and their general mood was normal. Despite the severity of their torture experiences, the survivors had only a moderate level of psychopathology. CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that torture has long-term psychological effects independent of those related to uprooting, refugee status, and other traumatic life events in a politically repressive environment. Prior knowledge of and preparedness for torture, strong commitment to a cause, immunization against traumatic stress as a result of repeated exposure, and strong social supports appear to have protective value against PTSD in survivors of torture.

Abstract
An unusual case with a blind-ending ureteral duplication containing stones is reported. A patient who had undergone two consequent unsuccessful operations attempted to extract a lower ureteral stone was later found to have the missing stone in the blind-ending branch of a duplicated ureter. The clinical significance of such malformation is discussed in light of the literature.
