Approaching the hard sphere limit in colloids suitable for confocal microscopy - the end of a decade lasting quest

PMMA-PHSA particles serve as the hard sphere model system since the 1980s. We investigate the fluid structure of fluorescent ones in three different solvents by laser scanning confocal microscopy: a decalin-tetrachloroethylene (TCE)-mixture and a decalin-cyclohexylbromide (CHB)-mixture with and without tetrabutylammoniumbromide (TBAB). The experimental 3D radial distribution functions are modeled by analytical theory and computer simulations taking polydispersity and the experimental position uncertainty into account. The quantitative comparison between experiment and simulation/theory establishes hard sphere like behavior for particles in decalin-TCE for a wide range of particle packing fractions. To the best of our knowledge, we present the first experimental dataset of a fluid structure that agrees convincingly with Percus-Yevick over a wide concentration range. Furthermore, charged sphere behavior is confirmed both for the decalin-CHB and the decalin-CHB-TBAB solvents, and it is demonstrated that a finite particle concentration reduces screening in the decalin-CHB-TBAB system compared to the bulk solvent.

A Hitchhiker's Guide to Particle Sizing Techniques

Accurate characterization of particle size and particle size distributions is mandatory in nanotechnology and a broad range of colloidal sciences. The size of colloidal particles can be determined using various techniques in direct and reciprocal space, including electron microscopy and static and dynamic light scattering. Differential dynamic microscopy was introduced recently and offers a new alternative. In this paper we present a systematic study of particle size determination using various techniques. We compare the results and highlight advantages and disadvantages. Unexpectedly we find that differential dynamic microscopy offers the unique possibility to determine the particle size in highly turbid samples.

Entropic Identification of the First Order Freezing Transition of a Suspension of Hard Sphere Particles

We analyze the experimental particle current autocorrelation function of suspensions of hard spheres. Interactions between the particles are mediated by thermally activated acoustic excitations in the solvent. Those acoustic modes are tantamount to the system's (energy) microstates and by their orthogonality, each of those modes can be identified with an independent Brownian particle current. Accordingly, partitioning of the system's energy states is impressed on the current autocorrelation function. This impression provides a novel measure of the entropy and location of a partitioning or entropy limit at a packing fraction that coincides with that of the observed suspension's first order freezing transition.

Coincidence of the freezing and the onset of caging in hard sphere and Lennard-Jones fluids

In this article, we examine the collective particle dynamics, as expressed by the time correlation function of the longitudinal particle current density, of several different fluids in the vicinity of their freezing points/lines. We consider and compare results obtained by dynamic light scattering for a suspension of hard spheres and by molecular dynamics for fluids with hard sphere and Lennard-Jones interactions. The latter are performed along both an isotherm and an isochore. In all cases, we find a qualitative change in the collective dynamics, within the resolution of the data, when their respective freezing lines are crossed. We associate this change with the onset of caging. The new results for the Lennard-Jones fluid reported here confirm that the occurrence of caging, found previously for systems of hard spheres, is a more general feature that distinguishes a metastable fluid from one in thermodynamic equilibrium.

Solidification of a colloidal hard sphere like model system approaching and crossing the glass transition

We investigated the process of vitrification and crystallization in a model system of colloidal hard spheres. The kinetics of the solidification process was measured using time resolved static light scattering, while the time evolution of the dynamic properties was determined using time resolved dynamic light scattering. By performing further analysis we confirm that solidification of hard sphere colloids is mediated by precursors. Analyzing the dynamic properties we can show that the long time dynamics and thus the shear rigidity of the metastable melt is highly correlated with the number density of solid clusters (precursors) nucleated. In crystallization these objects convert into highly ordered crystals whereas in the case of vitrification this conversion is blocked and the system is (temporarily) locked in the metastable precursor state. From the early stages of solidification one cannot clearly conclude whether the melt will crystallize or vitrify. Furthermore our data suggests that colloidal hard sphere glasses can crystallize via homogeneous nucleation.

Charged colloidal model systems under confinement in slit geometry: a new setup for optical microscopic studies

A new experimental setup for optical microscopic studies of charged colloidal model systems under confinement between two flat walls is presented. The measurement cell consists of optically flat quartz substrates attached to piezo actuators. Those facilitate fast and flexible adjustment of the confining geometry. Optionally, the local cell height can be quantitatively controlled by in situ interferometric measurements. Proper choice of materials guarantees sufficient chemical inertia against contamination with salt ions. For efficient preparation of charged colloidal suspensions under strongly deionized conditions, the cell can be connected to a conventional pump circuit including a mixed bed ion exchanger column. The usefulness of this setup, in particular for investigating the equilibrium phase behavior of colloids at low background salt concentrations, is demonstrated recalling recent experiments.

Self-organized cooperative swimming at low Reynolds numbers

Investigations of swimming at low Reynolds numbers (Re < 10(-4)) so far have focused on individual or collectively moving autonomous microswimmers consisting of a single active building unit. Here we show that linear propulsion can also be reproducibly generated in a self-assembled dynamic complex formed from a granular, HCl-releasing particle settled on a charged quartz wall and a swarm of micrometer-sized negatively charged colloids. In isolation, none of the constituents shows motion beyond diffusion. When brought together, they self-assemble into a complex capable of directed swimming. It is stabilized by toroidal solvent flow centered about the granular particle. Propulsion is then launched by an asymmetric distribution of the colloids. Motion is self-stabilizing and continues for up to 25 min with velocities of 1-3 μm/s. Although the details of the mechanisms involved pose a formidable experimental and theoretical challenge, our observations offer a conceptually new, well-reproduced, versatile approach to swimming and transport at low Reynolds numbers.

Micro-structure evolution of wall based crystals after casting of model suspensions as obtained from Bragg microscopy

Growth of heterogeneously nucleated, wall based crystals plays a major role in determining the micro-structure during melt casting. This issue is here addressed using a model system of charged colloidal spheres in deionized aqueous suspension observed by Bragg microscopy which is a combination of light scattering and microscopy. We examine the evolution of the three-dimensional size, shape, and orientation of twin domains in monolithic crystals growing from two opposing planar walls into a meta-stable (shear-) melt. At each wall crystal orientation and twinning emerges during nucleation with small domains. During growth these widen and merge. From image analysis we observe the lateral coarsening velocities to follow a power law behaviour L(XY) ∝ t(1/2) as long as the vertical growth continues at constant speed. Lateral coarsening terminates upon intersection of the two solids and hardly any further ripening is seen. Initial lateral coarsening velocities show a Wilson Frenkel type dependence on the melt meta-stability.

Crystalline multilayers of charged colloids in soft confinement: experiment versus theory

We combine real-space experiments and lattice sum calculations to investigate the phase diagram of charged colloidal particles under soft confinement. In the experiments we explore the equilibrium phase diagram of charged colloidal spheres in aqueous suspensions confined between two parallel charged walls at low background salt concentrations. Motivated by the experiments, we perform lattice sum minimizations to predict the crystalline ground state of point-like Yukawa particles which are exposed to a soft confining wall potential. In the multilayered crystalline regime, we obtain good agreement between the experimental and numerical findings: upon increasing the density we recover the sequence [structure: see text].

Easy-use and low-cost fiber-based two-color dynamic light-scattering apparatus

We present a small and compact two-color cross-correlation light-scattering setup designed to study the structure and dynamics of colloidal suspensions in the regime of considerable turbidity. Using a homemade concentric four-arm goniometer, combined with fiber-optical illumination and detection devices, allows an easy and long time stable alignment-even under a temperature variation of ∼5 °C. Tests with a nearly multiple scattering free suspension of small Rayleigh scatterers show intercepts in cross correlation near 0.4 over a wide range of scattering angles from 20° to 150°. Measuring slightly turbid samples in cross-correlation mode multiple scattering is sufficiently suppressed allowing the determination of multiple scattering free dynamic structure factors as well as particle form factors.

Crystallization in suspensions of hard spheres: a Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulation study

The crystallization of a metastable melt is one of the most important non-equilibrium phenomena in condensed matter physics, and hard sphere colloidal model systems have been used for several decades to investigate this process by experimental observation and computer simulation. Nevertheless, there is still an unexplained discrepancy between the simulation data and experimental nucleation rate densities. In this paper we examine the nucleation process in hard spheres using molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulation. We show that the crystallization process is mediated by precursors of low orientational bond-order and that our simulation data fairly match the experimental data sets.

Seed- and wall-induced heterogeneous nucleation in charged colloidal model systems under microgravity

Understanding the process that drives an undercooled fluid to the crystal state is still a challenging issue for condensed matter physics and plays a key role in designing new materials. The crystallization kinetics and the resulting polycrystalline morphology are given by a complex interplay of crystal nucleation, growth, and ripening. A great deal of progress has been made in recent years using colloidal suspensions as model systems in the study of crystallization. Close analogies to atomic systems are observed which can be exploited to address questions not accessible in atomic solidification. Here we present systematic measurements of the crystallization kinetics of a charged colloidal model system adding small amounts of seeds using time resolved scattering techniques. Large seeds show strong sedimentation under gravity even on the time scale of the crystallization process. To avoid this problem we performed our measurements under microgravity during parabolic flights. We report how the seed size and structure affect crystal nucleation and growth as functions of metastability giving the possibility to modify the crystallization process and the resulting microstructure of the polycrystal.

Precursor-mediated crystallization process in suspensions of hard spheres

We report on a large scale computer simulation study of crystal nucleation in hard spheres. Through a combined analysis of real- and reciprocal-space data, a picture of a two-step crystallization process is supported: First, dense, amorphous clusters form which then act as precursors for the nucleation of well-ordered crystallites. This kind of crystallization process has been previously observed in systems that interact via potentials that have an attractive as well as a repulsive part, most prominently in protein solutions. In this context the effect has been attributed to the presence of metastable fluid-fluid demixing. Our simulations, however, show that a purely repulsive system (that has no metastable fluid-fluid coexistence) crystallizes via the same mechanism.

Phase behaviour of deionized binary mixtures of charged colloidal spheres

We review recent work on the phase behaviour of binary charged sphere mixtures as a function of particle concentration and composition. Both size ratios Γ and charge ratios Λ are varied over a wide range. Unlike the case for hard spheres, the long-ranged Coulomb interaction stabilizes the crystal phase at low particle concentrations and shifts the occurrence of amorphous solids to particle concentrations considerably larger than the freezing concentration. Depending on Γ and Λ, we observe upper azeotrope, spindle, lower azeotrope and eutectic types of phase diagrams, all known well from metal systems. Most solids are of body centred cubic structure. Occasionally stoichiometric compounds are formed at large particle concentrations. For very low Γ, entropic effects dominate and induce a fluid-fluid phase separation. Since for charged spheres the charge ratio Λ is also decisive for the type of phase diagram, future experiments with charge variable silica spheres are suggested.

Competition between heterogeneous and homogeneous nucleation near a flat wall

We studied the competition between heterogeneous and homogeneous nucleation of an aqueous suspension of charged colloidal spheres close to the container walls. Samples of equilibrium crystalline structure were shear-melted and the metastable melt left to solidify after the cessation of shear. The crystallization kinetics was monitored using time-resolved scattering techniques: at low particle number densities n we applied an improved static light scattering method while at large particle concentrations ultra-small-angle x-ray scattering was applied for the first time. Our results show some unexpected behavior: the heterogeneous nucleation at the container walls is delayed in comparison to the homogeneous bulk nucleation and its rate density appears surprisingly slightly smaller, demonstrating the complexity of the observed crystallization process.

Enhanced crystal stability in a binary mixture of charged colloidal spheres

We report on the phase behavior of a binary charged sphere mixture of size ratio Gamma=0.68 and charge ratio Lambda approximately 1 as a function of composition p and number density n . For p=0.1-0.3 we observe freezing at densities well below the freezing densities of the pure components. At all compositions our data indicate the formation of substitutional alloy crystals of body centered cubic structure. No indications for compound formation were observed. Rather, our findings point at the first observation of an upper azeotrope. Measurements of the crystallization kinetics reveal a combined density and composition dependence of growth velocities and nucleation rate densities, with small but significant anomalies at p*=0.2 . These correlated deviations can be rationalized within classical theories of solidification and suggest an increased similarity between melt and solid for this particular composition.

Ripening-dominated crystallization in polydisperse hard-sphere-like colloids

We report on the crystal growth scenario in gravity-matched, polydisperse hard-sphere-like colloids at increasing particle concentration. In the fluid-crystal coexistence region, the crystal size as a function of time shows two separate regimes corresponding to crystal growth and crystal ripening. At higher supersaturation the crystal size grows according to the same power law through the whole experimental window of a few days: crystal growth and ripening merge together. We show that our observations cannot be explained by considering the slowing down of single-particle dynamics due to increasing volume fraction. We suggest that size fractionation occurring at the crystal-fluid interface is the dominant mechanism.

Exotic crystal superstructures of colloidal crystals in confinement

Colloidal model systems have been used for over three decades for investigating liquids, crystals, and glasses. Colloidal crystal superstructures have been observed in binary systems of repulsive spheres as well as oppositely charged sphere systems showing structures well known from atomic solids. In this work we study the structural transition of colloidal crystals under confinement. In addition to the known sequence of crystalline structures, crystal superstructures with dodecagonal and hexagonal symmetry are observed in one component systems. These structures have no atomic counterpart.

Preparation and characterization of particles with small differences in polydispersity

Colloidal particles are widely used both in fundamental research and in materials science. One important parameter influencing the physical properties of colloidal materials is the particle size distribution (polydispersity) of the colloidal particles. Recent work on colloidal crystallization has demonstrated that even subtle changes in polydispersity can have significant effects. In this study we present centrifugation techniques for subtly manipulating the width and the shape of the particle size distribution, for polydispersities less than 10%. We use scanning electron microscopy as well as dynamic and static light scattering to characterize the particle size distributions. We compare the results and highlight the difficulties associated with the determination of accurate particle size distributions.

Construction and stability of a close-packed structure observed in thin colloidal crystals

We have characterized a close-packed structure of confined charged colloidal spheres, which has been recently discovered. Using different microscopy experiments, the vertically arranged hexagonal planes of n - hcp perpendicular are found to continuously evolve from the horizontally oriented stacks of n hexagonal planes (nDelta) following the maximum packing criterion, but discontinuously transform to a stack of n+1 square planes [(n+1)[SHAPE OF A SQUARE]]. Large mechanically stable domains with threefold twin structures are regularly observed in the suspended state at packing fractions between 0.4 and 0.58.

Effect of polydispersity on the crystallization kinetics of suspensions of colloidal hard spheres when approaching the glass transition

We present a comprehensive study of the solidification scenario in suspensions of colloidal hard spheres for three polydispersities between 4.8% and 5.8%, over a range of volume fractions from near freezing to near the glass transition. From these results, we identify four stages in the crystallization process: (i) an induction stage where large numbers of precursor structures are observed, (ii) a conversion stage as precursors are converted to close packed structures, (iii) a nucleation stage, and (iv) a ripening stage. It is found that the behavior is qualitatively different for volume fractions below or above the melting volume fraction. The main effect of increasing polydispersity is to increase the duration of the induction stage, due to the requirement for local fractionation of particles of larger or smaller than average size. Near the glass transition, the nucleation process is entirely frustrated, and the sample is locked into a compressed crystal precursor structure. Interestingly, neither polydispersity nor volume fraction significantly influences the precursor stage, suggesting that the crystal precursors are present in all solidifying samples. We speculate that these precursors are related to the dynamical heterogeneities observed in a number of dynamical studies.

Nucleation kinetics in deionized charged colloidal model systems: a quantitative study by means of classical nucleation theory

We have studied the nucleation kinetics of charged colloidal model systems under salt free conditions crystallizing in bcc structure covering a wide range of particle number densities 18 microm(-3) < or =n< or =66.3 microm(-3). We employed direct video-microscopic observation of individual nucleation events to obtain time resolved nucleation rate densities. Polarization microscopy and static light scattering on the resulting solids in combination with Avrami theory is used to determine the steady state nucleation rate at high undercoolings. The final nucleation rate densities J from different methods are observed to be consistent with each other. By increasing the difference in the chemical potential between melt and crystal Delta mu about one order of magnitude J increases from 10(9)m(-3)s(-1) to 10(17)m(-3)s(-1) over approximately seven orders of magnitude. The data can be well analyzed and interpreted using classical nucleation theory (CNT) leading to a linearly increasing melt-crystal surface tension. Surprisingly, the reduced surface tension is about one order of magnitude larger compared to other system (metals; hard sphere colloids). The critical radius of the crystal nuclei is decreasing down to a very small value of 1.5 coordination shells. The determined kinetic prefactors are up to 10 orders of magnitude smaller than the prefactor calculated by CNT.

Small changes in particle-size distribution dramatically delay and enhance nucleation in hard sphere colloidal suspensions

We present hard-sphere crystallization kinetics for three samples with small differences in polydispersity. We show that an increase in polydispersity of 1% is sufficient to cause dramatic changes in the crystallization kinetics: crystallization is delayed by almost one decade in time and quantitative and qualitative changes in the crystallization scenario are observed. Surprisingly the nucleation rate density is enhanced by almost a factor of 10. We interpret these results in terms of polydispersity limited growth, where local fractionation processes lead to a delayed but faster nucleation.

Effective charges along the melting line of colloidal crystals

The shear modulus G of charged colloidal crystals was measured at several constant particle densities n and varying salt concentrations c up to the melting salt concentration cM using torsional resonance spectroscopy. Far from the phase boundary the samples are polycrystalline and the shear modulus stays roughly constant as a function of c. Upon approaching the melting transition an increasing amount of wall based crystal material is formed surrounding a shrinking polycrystalline core and G drops nearly linearly. When the transition is complete G again stays constant. The morphologic transitions may be scaled upon a single master curve. For the polycrystalline morphology, the elastic data are evaluated in terms of a pairwise additive screened Coulomb interaction yielding a particle effective charge Z(G)*. Under de-ionized conditions Z(0,G)* is independent of n and significantly lower than expected from charge renormalization theory. With increasing salt concentration Z(G)* increases. The increase becomes more pronounced at larger n. By extrapolation we further obtain the melting line effective elasticity charge Z(M,G)*. Z(M,G)* shows a steplike increase with increasing nM and cM to values consistent with charge renormalization theory. Interestingly, the increase coincides semi-quantitatively with the one expected from the universal melting line for charged spheres, thus facilitating a consistent description of phase behavior and elasticity over an extended range of the phase diagram.

Two-step crystallization kinetics in colloidal hard-sphere systems

The crystallization kinetics of colloidal hard spheres was studied using a special Bragg spectrometer with high sensitivity. In contrast with the classical scenario we observe a two-step nucleation process: the number of crystallites increases slowly at early times, followed by a dramatic reduction at intermediate times, prior to undergoing a rapid increase at late times. We explain these results in terms of a polydispersity limited growth of crystallites, where the crystallization at early times is governed by local fractionation processes, leading to a long delay prior to final crystallization.

Fast microscopic method for large scale determination of structure, morphology, and quality of thin colloidal crystals

We present a novel fast microscopic method to analyze the crystal structures of air-dried or suspended colloidal multilayer systems. Once typical lattice spacings of such films are in the range of visible light, characteristic Bragg scattering patterns are observed. If in microscopic observations these are excluded from image construction, a unique color coding for regions of different structures, morphologies, and layer numbers results. Incoherently scattering defect structures, however, may not be excluded from image construction and thus remain visible with high resolution.

Microscopic investigations of homogeneous nucleation in charged sphere suspensions

We studied the homogeneous nucleation kinetics of an aqueous suspension of charged colloidal spheres under de-ionized conditions. Samples of equilibrium crystalline structure were shear molten and the metastable melt left to solidify after cessation of shear. At low particle number densities n, corresponding to low metastability of the melt, nucleation was monitored directly via video microscopy. We determined the nucleation rates gamma(t) by counting the number of newly appearing crystals in the observation volume per unit time. Using a suitable discrete adaptation of Avrami's [J. Chem. Phys. 7, 1003 (1939); ibid.8, 212 (1940); ibid.9, 177 (1941)] model for solidification via homogeneous nucleation and subsequent growth, we calculate the remaining free volume VF(t) to obtain the rate densities J(t) = gamma(t)/VF(t). We observe J(t) to rise steeply, display a plateau at a maximum rate density Jmax, and to decrease again. With increased n the plateau duration shrinks while Jmax increases. At low to moderate number densities fully solidified samples were analyzed by microscopy to obtain the grain-size distribution and the average crystallite size angle brackets(L). Under the assumption of stationarity, we obtained the nucleation rate density J(Avr), which increased strongly with increasing n. Interestingly, J(Avr) agrees quantitatively to Jmax and to J(Avr) as obtained previously from scattering data taken on the same sample at large n. Thus, by combination of different methods, reliable nucleation rate densities are now available over roughly one order of magnitude in n and eight orders of magnitude in J.

Crystallization in charged two-component suspensions

We report on the crystallization of colloidal crystals comprising of charged particles with different size ratio dispersed in thoroughly deionized water. Single components were characterized carefully and their nucleation behavior was investigated before the preparation of mixtures. Mixtures investigated at constant particle number densities showed body centred cubic structure, conductivity, and shear moduli comply with the assumption of a randomly substituted crystal. Most importantly, for the first time we obtain the dependence of the nucleation rate densities in dependence on the composition and (for one fixed composition) the particle number density. The process of nucleation in random substitutional crystals is found to be similar to the one-component case.
