Abstract
BACKGROUND Although the effectiveness of robotic hepatectomy (RH) has been evaluated in several studies, the superiority of RH over other approaches has not been definitely established. Therefore, in the present propensity score-matched cohort study, we compared RH and laparoscopic hepatectomy (LH) in terms of perioperative and oncologic outcomes. METHODS This retrospective study included patients who underwent RH or LH for benign and malignant liver lesions at a single center in Taiwan at any time between 2014 and 2020. Confounding factors, specifically age, sex, body mass index, American Society of Anesthesiologists score, IWATE criteria, and Charlson comorbidity index, were adjusted through propensity score matching (PSM). RESULTS A total of 329 patients were finally included in this study. Two homogeneous groups (RH and LH; n, 72 each) were formed using PSM. The RH group had a longer operative time (median: 231 vs.180 min, respectively; P = .001) and lower conversion (to open surgery) rate (9.7% vs.0.0%, respectively; P = .013) than did the LH group. However, the two groups did not differ in terms of other perioperative outcomes, specifically blood loss, hospital stay, intensive care unit admission, mortality, morbidity, or tumor margin status. CONCLUSIONS The rate of conversion to open surgery is lower in RH than in LH. Although operative time is longer in RH than in LH, RH is feasible and safe for patients with benign or malignant liver lesion. Our study also demonstrated comparable oncological results in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma between LH and RH group.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Kidney transplantation is the most important treatment for end-stage renal disease. Immunosuppressive therapies can prevent acute rejection for kidney transplant recipients. Tacrolimus is usually administered to prevent graft rejection after transplantation. Previous studies have indicated that once-daily tacrolimus may improve medication adherence. Therefore, this meta-analysis aimed to compare clinical outcomes between once-daily and twice-daily tacrolimus in de novo renal transplant patients. METHODS Eligible studies were identified from the Cochrane Library Database, PubMed, and Embase until July 2022. Those randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating once-daily versus twice-daily tacrolimus formulations in de novo renal transplantation were included. A summary risk ratio (RR) and standardized mean difference (SMD) with the 95% confidence interval (CI) were estimated using a random-effects model. RESULTS In total, nine RCTs were included. There were no differences in biopsy-confirmed acute rejection rates between patients with once-daily and those with twice-daily tacrolimus (RR, 0.91; 95% CI, 0.73-1.13) in 12 months. Regarding renal function, there was no significant difference between the once-daily and twice-daily tacrolimus groups (SMD, -0.03; 95% CI, -0.12 to 0.07). In addition, the risk of graft failure, death, and adverse events in the first year was similar for the once-daily and twice-daily tacrolimus groups. CONCLUSION Our major findings suggest that de novo renal transplantation recipients receiving once-daily tacrolimus immediately after transplantation have comparable efficacy and safety with those recipients who received twice-daily tacrolimus. Therefore, once-daily tacrolimus medication can be an alternative for de novo renal transplantation recipients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Colorectal cancer (CRC) is highly prevalent and lethal globally, and its prognosis remains unsatisfactory. Drug resistance is regarded as the main cause of treatment failure leading to tumor recurrence and metastasis. The overexpression of fucosylated epitopes, which are usually modifications of glycoproteins, was reported to occur in various epithelial cancers. However, the effects of treatments that target these antigens in colorectal cancer remain unclear. METHODS This study investigated the expression of heavily fucosylated glycans (HFGs) in 30 clinical samples from patients with CRC and other normal human tissues. The complement-dependent cytotoxicity was explored in vitro through treatment with anti-HFG monoclonal antibody (mAb) alone or in combination with chemotherapeutic agents. In vivo inhibitory effects were also examined using a xenograft mouse model. RESULTS Immunohistochemistry staining and western blotting revealed that HFG expression was higher in human colorectal cancer tissues than in normal tissues. In DLD-1 and SW1116 cells, which overexpress fucosylated epitopes, anti-HFG mAb produced observable cytotoxic effects, especially when it was combined with chemotherapeutic agents. The xenograft model also demonstrated that anti-HFG mAb had potent and dose-dependent inhibitory effects on colorectal tumor growth. CONCLUSIONS As a novel cancer antigen, HFGs are a promising treatment target, and the implementation of anti-HFG mAb treatment for CRC warrants further investigation.

Abstract
Sorafenib, a small-molecule inhibitor targeting several tyrosine kinase pathways, is the standard treatment for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, not all patients with HCC respond well to sorafenib, and 30% of patients develop resistance to sorafenib after short-term treatment. Galectin-1 modulates cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions and plays a crucial role in HCC progression. However, whether Galectin-1 regulates receptor tyrosine kinases by sensitizing HCC to sorafenib remains unclear. Herein, we established a sorafenib-resistant HCC cell line (Huh-7/SR) and determined that Galectin-1 expression was significantly higher in Huh-7/SR cells than in parent cells. Galectin-1 knockdown reduced sorafenib resistance in Huh-7/SR cells, whereas Galectin-1 overexpression in Huh-7 cells increased sorafenib resistance. Galectin-1 regulated ferroptosis by inhibiting excessive lipid peroxidation, protecting sorafenib-resistant HCC cells from sorafenib-mediated ferroptosis. Galectin-1 expression was positively correlated with poor prognostic outcomes for HCC patients. Galectin-1 overexpression promoted the phosphorylation of AXL receptor tyrosine kinase (AXL) and MET proto-oncogene, receptor tyrosine kinase (MET) signaling, which increased sorafenib resistance. MET and AXL were highly expressed in patients with HCC, and AXL expression was positively correlated with Galectin-1 expression. These findings indicate that Galectin-1 regulates sorafenib resistance in HCC cells through AXL and MET signaling. Consequently, Galectin-1 is a promising therapeutic target for reducing sorafenib resistance and sorafenib-mediated ferroptosis in patients with HCC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the deadliest cancers worldwide and long-term survival is not guaranteed in metastatic disease despite current multidisciplinary therapies. A new compound 2,3,5,4'-Tetrahydroxystilbene (TG1), derived from THSG (2,3,5,4'-Tetrahydroxystilbene-2-O-β-D-Glucoside), has been developed, and its anticancer ability against CRC is verified in this study. METHODS HCT116, HT-29, and DLD-1 were treated with TG1 and the IC50 was measured using a sulforhodamine B assay. A Xenograft mouse model was used to monitor tumor growth. Apoptosis and autophagy, induced by TG1 in CRC cells, were examined. RNA-sequencing analysis of CRC cells treated with TG1 was performed to discover underlying pathways and mechanisms. RESULTS The results demonstrated that treatment with TG1 inhibited CRC proliferation in vitro and in vivo and induced apoptotic cell death, which was confirmed by Annexin V-FITC/PI staining and Western blotting. Additionally, TG1 treatment increased the level of autophagy in cells. RNA-sequencing and GSEA analyses revealed that TG1 was associated with MYC and the induction of ferroptosis. Furthermore, the ferroptosis inhibitor Bardoxolone abrogated the cytotoxic effect of TG1 in CRC cells, indicating that ferroptosis played a crucial role in TG1-induced cytotoxicity. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that TG1 might be a potential and potent compound for clinical use in the treatment of CRC by inhibiting proliferation and inducing ferroptosis through the MYC pathway.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most lethal cancers worldwide. Long-term survival is not achieved in metastatic CRC despite the current multidisciplinary therapies. Bromelain, a compound extracted from the pineapple plant, has multiple functions and anticancer properties. Previously, bromelain has been chromatographically separated into four fractions. Fraction 3 (F3) exhibits the highest proteolytic activity. The anticancer effects of F3 bromelain in CRC cells is unknown. METHODS In vitro cytotoxicity was verified through a sulforhodamine B assay. Apoptosis in CRC cells induced by unfractionated or F3 bromelain was examined using Annexin V-FITC/PI staining and Western blot analysis. ROS status, autophagy and lysosome formation were determined by specific detection kit. RESULTS The cytotoxicity of F3 bromelain in CRC cells was found to be comparable to that of unfractionated bromelain. F3 bromelain induces caspase-dependent apoptosis in CRC cells. Treatment with unfractionated or F3 bromelain increased superoxide and oxidative stress levels and autophagy and lysosome formation. ATG5/12 and beclin-1 were upregulated, and the conversion of LC3B-I to LC3B-II was increased significantly by treatment with F3 bromelain. Treated CQ, autophagy inhibitor, with unfractionated or F3 bromelain enhances the cytotoxic effects. Finally, the combination of unfractionated and F3 bromelain with a routine chemotherapeutic agent (5-fluourouracil, irinotecan, or oxaliplatin) resulted in synergistically higher cytotoxic potency in CRC cells. CONCLUSION Unfractionated and F3 bromelain inhibits CRC cell proliferation in vitro, and the cytotoxic effects of unfractionated bromelain are equivalent to F3 bromelain. F3 bromelain may be a potential and potent drug for clinical use due to its anticancer efficacy and high synergistic cytotoxicity when combined with a routine chemotherapeutic agent for CRC.

Abstract
Metastasis in breast cancer usually lead to the majority of deaths on clinical patients. Accordingly, diagnosis of metastasis at the early stage in breast cancer is important to improve the prognosis. We observed that Dicer protein levels are significant decrease in highly invasive breast cancer cells and usually correlated with poor clinical outcomes. Following, we aim to clarify the molecular regulatory mechanism of this phenomenon in breast cancer to provide a new therapeutic target. In this study, we obtained that Dicer expression correlated with metastasis and invasion without affect cell stability in breast cancer cells. Importantly, we identified the regulatory mechanism of Dicer protein degradation, the chaperone-mediated autophagy (CMA)-mediated degradation that is major mechanism to decrease Dicer protein expression and lead to cancer metastasis. We discovered that heat shock cognate 71-kDa protein (Hsc70) which as a CMA-related factor interacts with the CMA-targeting motif I333A/K334A on Dicer to promote degradation through CMA. Taken together, our findings hint that Dicer highly correlated with cancer metastasis, we reveal the tumor-promoting effect of CMA-mediated Dicer degradation in breast cancer.

Abstract
Two-dimensional (2D) all-inorganic Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) perovskite Cs7Pb6I19 nanosheets (NSs) were successfully developed for the first time by employing a structural recrystallization process with additional passivation of small organic sulfide molecules. The structure of Cs7Pb6I19 NSs is confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction measurements, atomically-resolved STEM measurements and atomic force microscopy (AFM) studies. Cs7Pb6I19 NSs with a specific n value of 6 exhibits unique absorption and emission spectra with intense excitons at 560 nm due to quantum confinement effects in 2D perovskite slabs. The formation mechanisms of 2D Cs7Pb6I19 NSs and 3D γ-CsPbI3 phases were investigated by in situ photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy and the activation energies of their formation reactions were calculated to be 151 kJ mol-1 and 95.3 kJ mol-1, respectively. The phase stability of 2D Cs7Pb6I19 NSs can be maintained at temperatures below 14 °C for more than 4 weeks. The overall results indicate that 2D Cs7Pb6I19 NSs demonstrate unique optical properties and structural stability compared with other 3D perovskite materials. We have opened a new path to the future discovery of 2D perovskite structures with metastable phases by using this recrystallization method and the assistance of sulfur-derived organic molecules.

Abstract
Objective Dicer is an enzyme that processes microRNAs (miRNAs) precursors into mature miRNAs, which have been implicated in various aspects of cancer progressions, such as clinical aggressiveness, prognosis, and survival outcomes. We previously showed that high expression of Dicer is associated with gemcitabine (GEM) resistance in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC); thus, in this study, we aimed to focus on how Dicer is involved in GEM resistance in PDAC, including cancer prognosis, cell proliferation, and metabolic regulation. Methods We generated stable shRNA knockdown of Dicer in GEM-resistant PANC-1 (PANC-1 GR) cells and explored cell viability by MTT and clonogenicity assays. Metabolomic profiling was employed to investigate metabolic changes between parental cells, PANC-1, and PANC-1 GR cells, and further implied to compare their sensitivity to the glutaminase inhibitor, CB839, and GEM treatments. To identify putative phosphorylation site involves with Dicer and its effects on GEM resistance in PDAC cells, we further generated phosphomimetic or phosphomutant Dicer at S1016 site and examined the changes in drug sensitivity, metabolic alteration, and miRNA regulation. Results We observed that high Dicer levels in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma cells were positively correlated with advanced pancreatic cancer and acquired resistance to GEM. Metabolomic analysis indicated that PANC-1 GR cells rapidly utilised glutamine as their major fuel and increased levels of glutaminase (GLS): glutamine synthetase (GLUL) ratio which is related to high Dicer expression. In addition, we found that phosphomimetic Dicer S1016E but not phosphomutant Dicer S1016A facilitated miRNA maturation, causing an imbalance in GLS and GLUL and resulting in an increased response to GLS inhibitors. Conclusion Our results suggest that phosphorylation of Dicer on site S1016 affects miRNA biogenesis and glutamine metabolism in GEM-resistant pancreatic cancer. Dicer expression is positively correlated with advanced pancreatic cancer. Dicer expression is significantly correlated with high level of GLS and GLS/GLUL ratio. Phosphomimetic Dicer S1016E enhances glutamine consumption and GLS inhibitor sensitivity. Phosphomimetic Dicer S1016E facilitates miRNAs maturation to increase GLS/GLUL ratio.

Abstract
"Spin" has been recently reported as an important degree of electronic freedom to improve the performance of electrocatalysts and photocatalysts. This work demonstrates the manipulations of spin-polarized electrons in CsPbBr3 halide perovskite nanoplates (NPLs) to boost the photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) efficiencies by doping manganese cations (Mn2+) and applying an external magnetic field. Mn-doped CsPbBr3 (Mn-CsPbBr3) NPLs exhibit an outstanding photocatalytic CO2RR compared to pristine CsPbBr3 NPLs due to creating spin-polarized electrons after Mn doping. Notably, the photocatalytic CO2RR of Mn-CsPbBr3 NPLs is significantly enhanced by applying an external magnetic field. Mn-CsPbBr3 NPLs exhibit 5.7 times improved performance of photocatalytic CO2RR under a magnetic field of 300 mT with a permanent magnet compared to pristine CsPbBr3 NPLs. The corresponding mechanism is systematically investigated by magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy, ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy, and density functional theory simulation. The origin of enhanced photocatalytic CO2RR efficiencies of Mn-CsPbBr3 NPLs is due to the increased number of spin-polarized photoexcited carriers by synergistic doping of the magnetic elements and applying a magnetic field, resulting in prolonged carrier lifetime and suppressed charge recombination. Our result shows that manipulating spin-polarized electrons in photocatalytic semiconductors provides an effective strategy to boost photocatalytic CO2RR efficiencies.

Abstract
The notorious growth of lithium (Li) dendrites and the instability of the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) during cycling make Li metal anodes unsuitable for use in commercial Li-ion batteries. Herein, the use of simple sugar coating (α-d-glucose) is demonstrated on top of Li metal to halt the growth of Li dendrites and stabilize the SEI. The α-d-glucose layer possesses high surface and adhesive energies toward Li, which promote the homogenous stripping and plating of Li ions on top of the Li metal. Density functional theory reveals that Li-ion diffusion within the α-d-glucose layer is governed by hopping around the bare sides of the O atoms and along the apparent passages formed by the glucose molecules. Stable cycling performance is achieved when combining α-d-glucose-coated Li (G|Li) anodes with sulfur- and LiFePO4 -based cathodes in both LiTFSI (ether) and LiPF6 (carbonate) electrolyte systems. A G|Li-based symmetrical cell operates at a current density of 1 mA cm-2 and areal capacity of 1 mAh cm-2 displays a stable overpotential profile for over 9 months (7000 h) of continuous charge/discharge cycling.

Abstract
Pancreatic cancer is one of the most lethal diseases which lack an early diagnostic marker. We investigated whether serum ferritin (SF) reflects risk for pancreatic cancer and potential genes that may contribute ferritin and pancreatic cancer risks. We performed a meta-analysis of relevant studies on SF and pancreatic cancer risk by searching articles in PUBMED and EMBASE published up to 1 March 2020. We also collected serum samples from Taipei Medical University Joint Biobank and compared SF levels in 34 healthy controls and 34 pancreatic cancer patients. An Oncomine database was applied as a platform to explore a series of genes that exhibited strong associations between ferritin and pancreatic cancer. Herein, we show that high levels of SF can indicate risk of pancreatic cancer, suggesting SF as the new tumor marker that may be used to help pancreatic cancer diagnosis. We also found that expressions of iron homeostasis genes (MYC, FXN) and ferroptosis genes (ALOX15, CBS, FDFT1, LPCAT3, RPL8, TP53, TTC35) are significantly altered with pancreatic tumor grades, which may contribute to differential expression of ferritin related to pancreatic cancer prognosis.

Abstract
In this study, the morphology and sorption behavior of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastics during the aging process are investigated. To clarify the sorption mechanism of aged PET microplastics, the common sunblock 4-methylbenzylidene camphor (4-MBC) was chosen as the target contaminant, and UV irradiation was used for the laboratory aging simulation. The results show that oxygen-containing functional groups (carboxylic, carbonyl, ketone and hydroxyl groups) increase on the surface of aged PET microplastics. Based on density functional theory (DFT) simulations, the camphor part of 4-MBC acts as a hydrogen bond acceptor, whereas the carboxylic group on aged PET microplastics acts as a hydrogen bond donor. The formation of hydrogen bonding causes increased sorption of 4-MBC on aged PET microplastics. The sorption capacity increased from 5 to 11 μg g-1 for 50 ppb 4-MBC with 100 mg PET microplastics after a five-day aging process. Other environmental factors that affect sorption were also identified; a higher pH value and the presence of salinity reduced the amount of sorption. The sorption of virgin PET ranged from 8.0 to 3.4 μg g-1 and the sorption of aged PET ranged from 22 to 5 μg g-1 at pH 4 to 10. In the presence of salinity (10% seawater), the virgin PET sorption dropped to 2.1 μg g-1 while the aged PET sorption dropped to 4 μg g-1. A similar phenomenon was also observed in the sorption behavior under natural sunlight (the sorption of PET increased from 0.4 to 0.8 μg g-1 after 6 months of aging). The potential risk to ecosystems of aged PET microplastics under prolonged sunlight exposure in the natural environment could be greater than that predicted for virgin microplastics.

Abstract
A novel laser-assisted LED for adaptive-driving-beam (ADB) headlights employing an ultra-reliable Ce3+: YAG-based single crystal phosphor (SCP)-converter layer for use in autonomous vehicles is demonstrated. The SCP fabricated at a high-temperature of 1,940°C exhibited better thermal stability than other phosphor-converter materials, evidenced by a thermal aging test. The high-beam pattern of the ADB is measured at a luminous intensity of 88,436 cd at 0°, 69,393 cd at ± 2.5°, and 42,942 cd at ± 5°, which well satisfies the ECE R112 class B regulation. The advantage of introducing the laser-assisted LED system employing the highly reliable SCP is to produce the high intensity for the ADB, which enables the increase of the field of view by 20% and the brightness by 28% for the ADB headlight and results in improving the visibility from ± 7° to ± 8.5° and the illumination distance up to 200 m. This proposed advance ADB headlight with the ultra-reliable SCP and the novel laser-assisted LED is favorable as one of the most promising ADB light source candidates for use in the next-generation autonomous vehicle applications.

Abstract
AXL which is a chemosensitizer protein for breast cancer cells in response to epidermal growth factor receptor-tyrosine kinase inhibitor and suppresses tumor growth. The clinical information show nuclear factor I (NFI)-C and NFI-X expression correlate with AXL expression in breast cancer patients. Following, we establish serial deletions of AXL promoter to identify regions required for Adenovirus-5 early region 1A (E1A)-mediated AXL suppression. All of the NFI family members were extensively studied for their expression and functions in regulating AXL. Moreover, E1A post-transcriptionally downregulates AXL expression through NFI. NFI-C and NFI-X, not NFI-A and NFI-B, resulting in cell death in response to EGFR-TKI. Our finding suggests that NFI-C and NFI-X are crucial regulators for AXL and significantly correlated with poor survival of breast cancer patients.

Abstract
Gemcitabine has been a commonly used therapeutic agent for treatment of pancreatic cancer. In the clinic, a growing resistance to gemcitabine has been observed in patients with pancreatic cancer, and investigation of the underlying mechanism of gemcitabine resistance is urgently required. The microRNA (miRNA)-producing enzyme, Dicer, is crucial for the maturation of miRNAs, and is involved in clinical aggressiveness, poor prognosis, and survival outcomes in various cancers, however, the role of Dicer in acquired gemcitabine resistance of pancreatic cancer is still not clear. Here, we found that Dicer expression was significantly increased in gemcitabine-resistant PANC-1 (PANC-1/GEM) cells compared with parental PANC-1 cells and observed a high level of Dicer correlated with increased risk of pancreatic cancer. Suppression of Dicer obviously decreased gemcitabine resistance in PANC-1/GEM cells; consistently, overexpression of Dicer in PANC-1 cells increased gemcitabine resistance. Moreover, we identified that transcriptional factor Sp1 targeted the promoter region of Dicer and found ERK/Sp1 signaling regulated Dicer expression in PANC-1/GEM cells, as well as positively correlated with pancreatic cancer progression and suggest that targeting the ERK/Sp1/Dicer pathway has potential therapeutic value for pancreatic cancer with acquired resistance to gemcitabine.

Abstract
Hepatocellular carcinoma is a common type of liver cancer. Resistance to chemotherapeutic agents is a major problem in cancer therapy. MicroRNAs have been reported in cancer development and tumor growth; however, the relationship between chemoresistance and hepatocellular carcinoma needs to be fully investigated. Here, we treated hepatocellular carcinoma cell line (HA22T) with a histone deacetylase inhibitor to establish hepatocellular carcinoma-resistant cells (HDACi-R) and investigated the molecular mechanisms of chemoresistance in HCC cells. Although histone deacetylase inhibitor could not enhance cell death in HDACi-R but upregulation of miR-107 decreased cell viability both in parental cells and resistance cells, decreased the expression of cofilin-1, enhanced ROS-induced cell apoptosis, and dose-dependently sensitized HDACi-R to HDACi. Further, miR-107 upregulation resulted in tumor cell disorganization in both HA22T and HDACi-R in a mice xenograft model. Our findings demonstrated that miR-107 downregulation leads to hepatocellular carcinoma cell resistance in HDACi via a cofilin-1-dependent molecular mechanism and ROS accumulation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/PURPOSE Although laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) is a common surgical procedure for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), its suitability for large HCCs (≥5 cm) remains controversial. This study compared surgical outcomes of open hepatectomy with LLR for large HCCs. METHODS A total of 313 patients with HCC who underwent hepatectomy between January 2010 and June 2017 were analyzed retrospectively. Demographic data, short-term outcomes, and long-term survivals were analyzed. RESULTS Among patients with large HCCs (n = 122), the open group (n = 85) had larger tumor sizes (10.91 ± 4.72 vs. 7.45 ± 2.95 cm; p < 0.001) and more advanced stages (stages 3/4: 71.8% vs. 45.9%; p = 0.029) than the LLR group (n = 37), while LLR group achieved less blood loss (623.24 ± 841.75 mL vs. 1091.76 ± 1004.72 mL, p = 0.014) and shorter LOS (9.00 ± 5.13 d vs. 12.82 ± 8.51 d, p = 0.013). There were no significant differences in complication and mortality rates between groups. The 5-year overall and recurrence-free survival rates between the two groups were not significantly different (p = 0.408 and 0.644 respectively). The surgical outcomes showed equal benefit of the two operation types. CONCLUSION With sufficient surgeon experience and appropriate patient selection, LLR is a feasible treatment choice for large HCCs.

Abstract
Revealing the process-structure-property (PSP) relationships of chemically complex mixed-ion perovskite requires comprehensive insights into correlations between microstructures and chemical compositions. However, experimentally determining the microstructural information about complex perovskites over the composition space is a challenging task. In this study, a machine learning enabled energy model was trained for MAyFA1-yPb(BrxI1-x)3 mixed-ion perovskite for fast and extensive sampling over the compositional/permutational spaces to map the ion-mixing energies, chemical ordering, and atomic strains. Correlation analysis indicated the strong lattice distortion in the high-MA/Br concentration regime is the primary reason for poor device performance-strong lattice distortion induces high mixing energy, resulting in phase segregation and defect formation. Hence, mitigating lattice distortion to retain the single-phase solid solution is one necessary condition of the optimal composition of mixed-ion perovskites. The present study therefore provides insights into the microstructures as well as the guidelines for determining the optimal composition of mixed-ion perovskite materials.

Abstract
Atropine is a common treatment used in children with myopia. However, it probably affects intraocular pressure (IOP) under some conditions. Our research aims to analyze clinical data by using machine learning models to evaluate the effect of 19 important factors on intraocular pressure (IOP) in children with myopia treated with topical atropine. The data is collected on 1545 eyes with spherical equivalent (SE) less than -10.0 diopters (D) treated with atropine for myopia control. Four machine learning models, namely multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS), classification and regression tree (CART), random forest (RF), and eXtreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), were used. Linear regression (LR) was used for benchmarking. The 10-fold cross-validation method was used to estimate the performance of the five methods. The main outcome measure is that the 19 important factors associated with atropine use that may affect IOP are evaluated using machine learning models. Endpoint IOP at the last visit was set as the target variable. The results show that the top five significant variables, including baseline IOP, recruitment duration, age, total duration and previous cumulative dosage, were identified as most significant for evaluating the effect of atropine use for treating myopia on IOP. We can conclude that the use of machine learning methods to evaluate factors that affect IOP in children with myopia treated with topical atropine is promising. XGBoost is the best predictive model, and baseline IOP is the most accurate predictive factor for endpoint IOP among all machine learning approaches.

Abstract
Background Breast cancer is one of the most prevalent gynecologic malignancies worldwide. Despite the high sensitivity in response to chemotherapy, drug resistance occurred frequently in clinical treatment. Cryptotanshinone (CTS) is a herbal medicine and has been identified as an anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative drug. Methods In vitro assays, including the cell proliferation assay, colony formation assay, Western blot analysis, transwell migration/invasion assays, and cell scratch assay were used to explore the biological activities and working mechanism of CTS. Breast cancer cells were also transfected with PKM2 expressing vectors to define the molecular mechanisms involved in CTS-mediated anti-tumor activity. Results We found that CTS shows anti-proliferative effects and decreases the clonogenic ability of breast cancer cells. We also found that CTS inhibited the migration and invasion activity of MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells by different analyzed methods. CTS also downregulated the levels of glycolysis-related proteins, such as PKM2, LDHA, and HK2. In addition, overexpression of PKM2 recovered CTS-mediated suppression of cell proliferation, colony formation, and cell mobility of breast cancer cells. We also found PKM2 was significantly overexpressed in tumor tissues and invasive ductal breast carcinoma compared to normal tissues and patients with high PKM2 expression had worse overall survival and metastasis-free survival outcomes. Conclusion CTS inhibited the proliferation, migration, and invasion of breast cancer cells. The involved mechanism may refer to the downregulation of the PKM2/β-catenin axis.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Many risk prediction models of diabetes remission after bariatric and metabolic surgery have been proposed. Most models have been created using Roux-en-Y gastric bypass cohorts. However, validation of these models in sleeve gastrectomy (SG) is limited. The objective of our study is to validate the performance of risk prediction models of diabetes remission in obese patients with diabetes who underwent SG. METHOD This retrospective cohort study included 128 patients who underwent SG with at least 1 year follow-up from Dec 2011 to Sep 2016 as the validation cohort. A literature review revealed total 11 models with 2 categories (scoring system and logistic regression), which were validated by our study dataset. Discrimination was evaluated by area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUC) while calibration by Hosmer-Lemeshow test and predicted versus observed remission ratio. RESULTS At 1 year after surgery, 71.9% diabetes remission (HbA1c < 6.0 off medication) and 61.4% excess weight loss were observed. Individual metabolic surgery, ABCD, DiaRem, Advanced-DiaRem, DiaBetter, Ana et al., and Dixon et al. models showed excellent discrimination power (AUC > 0.8). In calibration, all models overestimated diabetes remission from 5 to 30% but did not lose their goodness of fit. CONCLUSION This is the first comprehensive external validation of current risk prediction models of diabetes remission at 1 year after SG. Seven models showed excellent predicting power, and scoring models were recommended more because of their easy utility.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a worldwide health problem. Currently, there is no effective clinical therapeutic strategy for HCC. Smoking is associated with several malignant diseases including cancers. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH However, the impact of smoking on HCC is still unresolved. Retrospectively reviewed HCC patients diagnosed between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2015 at Taipei Medical University-Shuang Ho Hospital (Ministry of Health and Welfare). We found that smoking was associated with a poor prognosis, especially recurrence and patient survival after curative surgery using a clinicopathological analysis. RESULTS Our univariate and multivariate analyses showed that the α7-nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7-nAChR) was an oncogene and risk factor for post-resection recurrence. The α7-nAChR was overexpressed in HCC tissues compared to their non-tumor counterparts. Silencing the α7-nAChR reduced the viability of HCC cells, suppressed cellular proliferation, attenuated migration and invasion, and diminished the tumor's sphere-formation ability, with concurrent downregulation of expression levels of the TGR5, p-JAK2, p-STAT3 (Tyr705/Ser727), RhoA, ROCK1, MMP2, and MMP9 proteins. Furthermore, a positive correlation was found between α7-nAChR and JAK2 expressions (p = 0.01) in HCC specimens, as well as their membranous co-localization. CONCLUSION Together, we demonstrated that the α7-nAChR may be an independent prognosticator of the progression and prognosis of HCC patients. These findings suggest that the α7-nAChR drives the progression and recurrence of HCC through JAK2/STAT3 signaling and is a novel target for anti-HCC therapy.

Abstract
Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite materials are promising materials for photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications. Nevertheless, the construction of a computationally efficient potential model for atomistic simulations of perovskite with high fidelity to ab initio calculations is not a trivial task given the chemically complex nature of perovskite in terms of its chemical components and interatomic interactions. In the present study, we demonstrate that artificial neural network (ANN) models can be employed for efficient and accurate potential energy evaluation of MAPbI3 perovskite materials. The ANN models were trained using training sets composed of thousands of atomic images of tetragonal MAPbI3 crystals, with their respective energies and atomic forces obtained from ab initio calculations. The trained ANN models were validated by predicting the lattice parameters and energies/atomic forces of cubic MAPbI3 perovskite and had excellent agreement with ab initio calculations. The phonon modes could also be extracted using the trained ANN model with good agreement with ab initio calculations, provided that the atomic forces were incorporated into the training processes. Finally, we demonstrate that for a given system size, the trained ANN model offers 104 to 105 faster time consumption per energy evaluation relative to ab initio calculations using Vienna Ab initio Simulation Package, demonstrating the potential of the ANN model for exhaustively sampling the configuration spaces of chemically complex materials for predictions of thermodynamic properties and phase stabilities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The pathology change of renal tubulointerstitial fibrosis is a critical feature of chronic kidney disease (CKD), regardless of the primary insults. The infiltration of inflammatory cells and the consecutive secretion of profibrotic factors are frequently and conspicuously observed during the development of renal fibrosis. Icariin, an active polyphenol of the Epimedium genus, has been found to alleviate the symptoms of chronic diseases like diabetes, neurodegeneration, and heart and renal diseases. The effect and mechanism of icariin on the prevention of CKD-associated renal fibrosis still needed clarification. PURPOSE The aims of this study were to investigate whether icariin treatment improves the development of CKD-associated renal fibrosis and its possible mechanism. METHODS An experimental unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO)-induced chronic renal fibrosis mouse model was used. Mice were orally administered with icariin (20 mg/kg/day) for 3 consecutive days before and 14 consecutive days after UUO surgery. RESULTS The pathological changes, collagen deposition, and protein expressions of profibrotic factors (transforming growth factor-β and connective tissue growth factor) and fibrotic markers (α-smooth muscle actin and fibronectin), which were significantly elevated in the kidneys of UUO mice, could be significantly reversed by icariin treatment. Icariin treatment also significantly inhibited the increased Smad2/3 and decreased E-cadherin protein expressions in the kidneys of UUO mice. Icariin treatment prominently mitigated the protein expression of proinflammatory factors like nuclear factor-κB, cyclooxygenase-2, interleukin 1-β and prooxidative enzyme (NADPH oxidase-4), and it increased the protein expression of antioxidative enzymes (superoxide dismutase and catalase). CONCLUSION Icariin treatment protects against CKD-associated renal fibrosis via its antifibrotic and anti-inflammatory properties. Icariin may serve as a therapeutic agent in the prevention of CKD-associated renal fibrosis.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The immunosuppressant agents in kidney transplantation (KT) may lead to various complications such as opportunistic infections and malignancies. BK virus associated nephropathy is a significant complication following KT, and it can result in graft failure. BK virus causes tubulointerstitial nephritis, ureter stenosis, and even graft failure in KT recipients with impaired immune system. We described a 63-year-old woman, who was a hepatitis C carrier and on dialysis for 22 years before KT, who received cadaveric-donor KT 2 years previously. She reported decreasing urine output and general weakness. The serum creatinine level was slightly increased from 2.94 to 4.38 mg/dL. METHODS Immunosuppressant medications including prednisolone, everolimus, cyclosporin, and mycophenolate sodium were continued as maintenance therapy post KT. Kidney biopsy was performed due to deterioration of graft function. RESULTS The kidney biopsy showed consistent results with early-stage polyomavirus nephropathy, characterized by focal viral cytopathic changes with positive immunohistochemical signals and mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis, immune-complex-mediated (Fig 1 and Fig 2). Negative C4d staining at peritubular capillary was reported. The dosage of mycophenolate sodium was tapered from 720 to 360 mg daily and that of everolimus increased from 0.5 to 1.0 mg daily due to BK viral infection with BK nephropathy. The serum creatinine level was 2.75 mg/dL after treatment. CONCLUSION Early detection of BK nephropathy and decreasing immunosuppressant agents are the mainstay of treatment. Substituting leflunomide for mycophenolate sodium and increasing dosage of everolimus has been proposed to solve BK nephropathy. We presented that the use of leflunomide in such situation is in a timely manner.

Abstract
Dissolution of lithium polysulfide (LiPS) into the electrolyte during discharging, causing shuttling of LiPS from the cathode to the lithium (Li) metal, is mainly responsible for the capacity decay and short battery life of lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). Herein, we designed a separator comprising polypropylene (PP) coated with MoO3 nanobelts (MNBs), prepared through facile grinding of commercial MoO3 powder. The formation of Li2Sn-MoO3 during discharging inhibited the polysulfide shuttling; during charging, Li passivated LixMoO3 facilitated ionic transfer during the redox reaction by decreasing the charge transfer resistance. This dual-interaction mechanism of LiPS-with both Mo and the formation of LixMoO3-resulted in a substantially high initial discharge capacity at a very high current density of 5C, with 29.4% of the capacity retained after 5000 cycles. The simple fabrication approach and extraordinary cycle life observed when using this MNB-coated separator suggest a scalable solution for future commercialization of LSBs.

Abstract
An advanced laser headlight module (LHM) employing highly reliable glass phosphor is demonstrated. The novel glass-based YAG phosphor-converter layers fabricated by low-temperature of 750°C exhibited better thermal stability. The LHM consisted of a 5 × 1 blue laser diode array, an aspherical lens, a glass phosphor-converter layer with an aluminum thermal dissipation substrate, and a dichroic filter to allow pass blue light and reflect yellow phosphor light. The 5 × 1 blue laser array was packaged with five blue lasers having optical power of 1.2 W per laser. The LHM exhibited total output optical power of 6 W, luminous flux of 1860 lm, relative color temperature of 4100 K, and efficiency of more than 310 lm/W. The high-beam patterns of the LHMs were measured to be 45,000 luminous intensity (cd) at 0°, 31,000 cd at ± 2.5°, and 12,500 cd at ± 5°, which were well satisfied the ECE R112 class B regulation. The proposed high-performance LHM with highly reliable glass-based phosphor-converter layer fabricated by low temperature is favorable as one of the promising LHM candidates for use in the next-generation automobile headlight applications.

Abstract
Despite issues related to dendrite formation, research on Li metal anodes has resurged because of their high energy density. In this study, graphene oxide (GO) layers are decorated onto Li metal anodes through a simple process of drop-casting and spray-coating. The self-assembly of GO is exploited to synthesize coatings having compact, mesoporous, and macroporous morphologies. The abilities of the GO coatings to suppress dendrite formation are compared through Li|Li symmetrical cell charging at a current density of 5 mA cm-2 for 2000 cycles-a particularly abusive test. The macroporous structure possesses the lowest impedance, whereas the compact structure excels in terms of stability. Moreover, GO exhibits a low nucleation overpotential and is transformed into reduced GO with enhanced conductivity during the operation of the cells; both factors synergistically mitigate the issue of dendrite formation. Li-S batteries incorporating the GO-decorated Li anodes exhibit an initial capacity of 850 mA h g-1 and maintain their stability for 800 cycles at a C-rate of 1 C (1675 mA h g-1), suggesting the applicability of GO in future rechargeable batteries.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pulmonary complications remain relatively high in morbidities that arise after liver surgery and are associated with increased length of hospital stay and higher cost. Identification of possible risk factors in this retrospective analysis may help reduce operative morbidity and achieve better outcomes. METHODS In all, 363 consecutive patients underwent elective hepatectomies between July 2008 and November 2013 and these were identified and analyzed retrospectively. Patient demographics and perioperative variables were collected. The main outcome was an analysis of risk factors associated with postoperative pleural effusion (PPE). RESULTS Of 363 patients receiving hepatectomies, 80 patients (22.0%) developed pulmonary complications. The predominant pulmonary complication in this series is pleural effusion (76 patients, 95%). Univariate analysis found that older age, higher body mass index (BMI), chronic obstructive lung disease, asthma, heart disease, hepatitis C infection, heavy smoking, American Society of Anesthesiology class III and IV, hepatectomy site, combined surgeries, perioperative blood transfusion, and cirrhosis of liver were associated with PPE. Only older age, higher BMI, asthma, heavy smoker, combined gastrointestinal surgeries, and perioperative blood transfusion were identified as independent risk factors in multivariate analysis. CONCLUSION This study identifies 6 risk factors for PPE. Identification and management of some of these factors could possibly reduce morbidity and improve short-term surgical outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Central neck dissection and total thyroidectomy are standard treatments for patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) with clinically involved central nodes. However, prophylactic central neck dissection (pCND) in patients with clinically uninvolved cN0 has been beneficial in some studies but ineffective in others. We conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy and safety of pCND in patients with central neck lymph nodes cN0 PTC. METHODS The PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and Scopus databases and the ClinicalTrials.gov registry were electronically searched for studies published until September 2017. The meta-analysis was conducted to calculate the pooled effect size by using random-effects model. Treatment efficacies were measured by determining locoregional recurrence (LRR). Secondary outcomes included transient recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury, permanent RLN injury, transient hypocalcemia, and permanent hypocalcemia. RESULTS Twenty-three retrospective and prospective cohort studies involving 18,376 patients were reviewed. Patients who underwent pCND had significantly lower LRR (odds ratio [OR] 0.65; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.48-0.88) but significantly higher incidence rates of transient RLN injury (OR 2.03; 95% CI 1.32-3.13), transient hypocalcemia (OR 2.23; 95% CI 1.84-2.70), and permanent hypocalcemia (OR 2.22; 95% CI 1.58-3.13) than that of no pCND group. CONCLUSION Compared with no pCND, pCND significantly reduces LRR but is accompanied by numerous adverse effects. The clinical decision should be made after the shared decision-making process of clinicians and patients.

BACKGROUND This retrospective study compared the short- and long-term outcomes of laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) and open liver resection (OLR) and identified patients who might gain more benefits from LLR. METHODS The demographic and perioperative data, short-term surgical outcomes, and long-term oncological results of all 313 patients who received elective liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) between January 2010 and June 2017 were analyzed. The patients were then divided into stage-specific subgroups according to the TNM staging system for comparison. RESULTS LLR was performed in 153 patients and OLR in 160 patients. LLR is associated with less blood loss (p < 0.001), shorter surgical time (p = 0.001), shorter length of hospital stay (p < 0.001), and lower morbidity rate (p = 0.034). The 5-year overall survival (OS) rates in the LLR group were higher than those in the OLR group (78.1 vs. 57.6%; p = 0.002). Stage-specific subgroup analysis revealed similar 5-year OS in the two groups (stage I: 82.8 vs. 82.6%, p = 0.845; stage II: 80.3 vs. 69.2%, p = 0.638; stage III: 55.6 vs. 34.8%, p = 0.681), as did the 5-year recurrence-free survival. Moreover, the short-term outcomes were better in the LLR group in terms of surgical time, blood loss, and length of hospital stay, and these benefits attenuated with advancing tumor stage. CONCLUSIONS LLR for HCC is a safe and feasible procedure that does not compromise long-term oncological outcomes. In early tumor stages, LLR might be better in terms of short-term surgical outcomes.

Abstract
The cancer stem cells (CSCs) theory recently became a focus of heightened attention in cancer biology, with the proposition that CSCs may constitute an important therapeutic target for effective anticancer therapy, because of their demonstrated role in tumor initiation, chemo-, and radio-resistance. Liver CSCs are a small subpopulation of poorly- or undifferentiated liver tumor cells, implicated in tumorigenesis, metastasis, resistance to therapy and disease relapse, enriched with and associated with the functional markers corresponding to the CSCs-enriched side population (SP), high aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) activity, and enhanced formation of in vitro liver CSCs models, referred to herein as hepatospheres. In this study, we found YAP1 was significantly expressed in the SP cells, as well as in generated hepatospheres compared to non-SP or parental HCC cells, at transcript and/or protein levels. In addition, downregulation of YAP1 expression levels by small molecule inhibitor and siRNA transfection, in the HCC cell lines, PLC/PRF/5 and Mahlavu, were associated with marked loss of ability to form hepatospheres and increased sensitivity to sorafenib. Consistent with the above, we demonstrated that YAP1 expression positively correlated with that of Sox2, Oct4, c-Myc and GRP78, markers of stemness and drug resistance. This is suggestive of YAP1's role as a modulator of cancer stemness, ER stress and chemoresistance. For the first time, we demonstrate that Ovatodiolide significantly attenuates YAP1 expression and subsequently suppressed YAP1-modulated CSCs phenotypes and associated disease progression, consistent with our previous finding in breast cancer. Taken together, our findings suggest that YAP1, highly expressed in malignant liver tumours, contributes to hepatocellular CSCs phenotype and is a molecular target of interest for CSCs targeted therapy in liver cancer patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Cholecystectomy is generally performed to treat patients with gallstone disease (GSD) in clinical practice. The present study aimed to investigate whether type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) may influence the overall survival of GSD patients. METHODS The National Health Insurance Research Database, a population-based registry data in Taiwan, was used to identify GSD patients from 2001 to 2008. The risk of cancers and effects of T2DM on the overall survival of GSD patients receiving cholecystectomy were estimated by hazards ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs using the Cox proportional hazard model. RESULTS Among 392,028 eligible GSD patients, 81,971 underwent cholecystectomy, whereas 310,057 did not. After cholecystectomy, the HR for developing cancer was 1.14. The HR for the overall survival was 0.74-fold lower for patients who underwent cholecystectomy than that for patients who did not. GSD patients without T2DM who underwent cholecystectomy (0.78-fold lower risk) had a longer survival, whereas those with T2DM had shorter survival (1.64-fold higher risk without cholecystectomy and 1.13-fold higher risk with cholecystectomy) compared with those without T2DM who did not undergo cholecystectomy. CONCLUSIONS Our major findings suggest that T2DM may worsen the prognosis of GSD patients after cholecystectomy, which provides useful insight into the treatment of T2DM among GSD patients in clinical settings.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Angiopoietin-like protein 1 (ANGPTL1) has been shown to act as a tumor suppressor by inhibiting angiogenesis, cancer invasion, and metastasis. However, little is known about the effects of ANGPTL1 on sorafenib resistance and cancer stem cell properties in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and the mechanism underlying these effects. Here, we show that ANGPTL1 expression positively correlates with sorafenib sensitivity in HCC cells and human HCC tissues. ANGPTL1 significantly decreases epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-driven sorafenib resistance, cancer stemness, and tumor growth of HCC cells by repressing Slug expression. ANGPTL1 directly interacts with and inactivates MET receptor, which contributes to Slug suppression through inhibition of the extracellular receptor kinase/protein kinase B (ERK/AKT)-dependent early growth response protein 1 (Egr-1) pathway. ANGPTL1 expression inversely correlates with Slug expression, poor sorafenib responsiveness, and poor clinical outcomes in HCC patients. CONCLUSION ANGPTL1 inhibits sorafenib resistance and cancer stemness in HCC cells by repressing EMT through inhibition of the MET receptor-AKT/ERK-Egr-1-Slug signaling cascade. ANGPTL1 may serve as a novel MET receptor inhibitor for advanced HCC therapy. (Hepatology 2016;64:1637-1651).

Abstract
End-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients commonly have a higher risk of developing cardiovascular diseases than general population. Chronic kidney disease is an independent risk factor for atrial fibrillation (AF); however, little is known about the AF risk among ESRD patients with various modalities of renal replacement therapy. We used the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database to determine the incident AF among peritoneal dialysis (PD) and hemodialysis (HD) patients in Taiwan.Our ESRD cohort include Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, we identified 15,947 patients, who started renal replacement therapy between January 1, 2002 and December 31, 2003. From the same data source, 47,841 controls without ESRD (3 subjects for each patient) were identified randomly and frequency matched by gender, age (±1 year), and the year of the study patient's index date for ESRD between January 1, 2002 and December 31, 2003.During the follow-up period (mean duration: 8-10 years), 3428 individuals developed the new-onset AF. The incidence rate ratios for AF were 2.07 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.93-2.23) and 1.78 (95% CI = 1.30-2.44) in HD and PD groups, respectively. After we adjusted for age, gender, and comorbidities, the hazard ratios for the AF risk were 1.46 (95% CI = 1.32-1.61) and 1.32 (95% CI = 1.00-1.83) in HD and PD groups, respectively. ESRD patients with a history of certain comorbidities including hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have significantly increased risks of AF.This nationwide, population-based study suggests that incidence of AF is increased among dialysis ESRD patients. Furthermore, we have to pay more attention in clinical practice and long-term care for those ESRD patients with a history of certain comorbidities.

Abstract
Paclitaxel is a standard-of-care chemotherapy for breast cancer, despite the increasing recognition of its poor effectiveness in the treatment of patients with advanced disease. Here, we report that adenovirus-type 5 E1A-mediated elevation of the miRNA-processing enzyme Dicer is sufficient to enhance paclitaxel sensitization and reduce cancer stem-like cell properties in this setting. Elevating Dicer expression increased levels of the AXL kinase targeting miRNA miR-494, thereby repressing AXL expression to increase paclitaxel sensitivity. We found that Dicer expression was regulated at the transcription level by E1A, through activation of an MAPK14/CEBPα pathway. Our findings define a mechanism of E1A-mediated chemosensitization for paclitaxel, which is based upon the suppression of breast cancer stem-like cells, with potential implications for the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer patients. Abstract
Elevated expression of heat shock protein 5 (HSPA5) promotes drug resistance and metastasis and is a marker of poor prognosis in breast cancer patients. Adenovirus type 5 E1A gene therapy has demonstrated antitumor efficacy but the mechanisms of metastasis-inhibition are unclear. Here, we report that E1A interacts with p300 histone acetyltransferase (HAT) and blocks p300-mediated HSPA5 acetylation at K353, which in turn promotes HSPA5 ubiquitination by GP78 (E3 ubiquitin ligase) and subsequent proteasome-mediated degradation. Our findings point out the Ying-Yang regulation of two different post-translational modifications (ubiquitination and acetylation) of HSPA5 in tumor metastasis.

Abstract
Abstract
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) was the tenth leading cause of death in Taiwan. as the fifth stage of progressive CKD. Various therapeutic modalities including hemodialysis (HD),peritoneal dialysis (PD) and renal transplantation (RT) modify the risks of systemic chronic diseases in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients remains unclear.
A total of 18,081 newly diagnosed ESRD patients and 54,243 controls matched for age, gender and index date were recruited from the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan. The ESRD status was confirmed by the registry of catastrophic illness. The incidence of cancer was identified through cross-referencing with the National Cancer Registry Database. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated by a Cox proportional hazards model. Kaplan-Meier method were used for all analyses. Significant higher incidence rate ratios (IRRs) of bladder cancer of 7.0, 9.5 and 14.4 were found for ESRD patients undergoing HD, PD and RT, respectively. The IRRs of kidney cancer also represent a similar risk pattern. We observed that significant bladder cancer risks were observed among ESRD patients undergoing HD (HR = 10.0), PD (HR = 12.8) and RT (17.7) after the adjustment for age, gender and co-morbidities. In addition, significant kidney cancer risks of 11.2, 17.1 and 33.7 were also found for ESRD patients undergoing HD, PD and RT, respectively. In conclusion, different therapeutic modalities could modify the risks of bladder and kidney cancers in ESRD patients in Taiwan.

Abstract
Vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 3 (VEGFR-3) supports tumor lymphangiogenesis. It was originally identified as a lymphangiogenic factor expressed in lymphatic endothelial cells. VEGFR-3 was detected in advanced human malignancies and correlated with poor prognosis. Our previous studies show that activation of the VEGF-C/VEGFR-3 axis promotes cancer metastasis and is associated with clinical progression in patients with lung cancer, indicating that VEGFR-3 is a potential target for cancer therapy. In this study, we developed eight peptides targeting VEGFR-3. Two peptides strongly inhibited the kinase activity of VEGFR-3 and suppressed VEGF-C-mediated invasion of cancer cells. Moreover, these peptides abolished VEGF-C-induced drug resistance and tumor initiating cell formation. This study demonstrates the therapeutic potential of VEGFR-3-targeting peptides.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is defined by reduced expression of the estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, and HER2. TNBC is an especially aggressive group of breast cancers with poor prognosis. There are currently no validated molecular targets to effectively treat this disease. Thus, it is necessary to identify effective molecular targets and therapeutic strategies for TNBC patients. METHODS The expression of HSPA5 in patients with breast cancer was examined by immunohistochemistry. The association of HSPA5 expression with tumor grade and metastatic events in TNBC patients was analyzed using the Oncomine database. The knockdown and overexpression of HSPA5 protein were performed to investigate the effects on E1A-suppressed cell migration/invasion of TNBC using in vitro transwell assays and tumor growth/experimental metastasis studies in animal models. RESULTS The expression of HSPA5 was positively correlated with high-grade tumors, metastatic events, and poor overall survival in breast cancer patients with TNBC. E1A-inhibited HSPA5 expression suppressed cell migration/invasive ability of TNBC cell lines. Moreover, E1A significantly abolished lung metastases from breast cancer cells by inhibiting HSPA5 expression in a xenograft tumor model. CONCLUSIONS The overexpression of HSPA5 is critical for high-risk metastasis of breast cancer and TNBC. The results of our study suggest that HSPA5 may be a crucial mediator of E1A-suppressed metastatic ability of breast cancer cells. Thus, E1A may be a potential target for diagnosis and individualized treatment in clinical practice.

Abstract
Several previous studies have investigated the association between the SULT1A1 Arg213His polymorphism and the risk of bladder cancer in various populations. However, these results remain inconsistent. Therefore, we performed this meta-analysis to evaluate the relationship between the SULT1A1 Arg213His polymorphism and the risk of bladder cancer. An extensive literature search was performed to identify all eligible studies regarding this association. The odds ratios (ORs) with 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) were used to estimate the strength of risk under fixed and random effects models. We identified and included eight case-control studies including 2,036 cases and 2,273 controls. No significant association was found between the SULT1A1 Arg213His polymorphism and the risk of bladder cancer under the dominant model; however, those with the SULT1A1 Arg/Arg genotype had a significantly increased risk (OR = 1.218, 95 % CI = 1.067-1.392, P = 0.0044) under the recessive model. In the subgroup analysis of ethnicity, a significant association was observed in Caucasians under the recessive model (OR = 1.269, 95 % CI = 1.069-1.506, P = 0.007). Furthermore, an increased risk of bladder cancer was observed between the Arg213His polymorphism and never smokers in the recessive model (OR = 1.428, 95 % CI = 1.079-1.890, P = 0.013). The results of this meta-analysis indicate that the SULT1A1 Arg213His polymorphism is associated with the risk bladder cancer under a recessive model; however, a possibly higher risk for Caucasians with the Arg/Arg genotype and never smokers needs further investigation.

Abstract
NAD(P)H quinine oxidoreductase (NQO1) plays an important role in the metabolism of several carcinogens contained in cigarettes. Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression had been detected in urinary bladder tumors. The aim of this study was to investigate the interaction of iNOS and NQO1 on bladder cancer (BC) risk stratified by cigarette smoking status. METHODS A total of 159 BC patients and 150 cancer-free controls were recruited from December 2003 to November 2004. Genotyping of NQO1 rs1800566 polymorphism and iNOS (CCTTT)n pentanucleotide repeat polymorphism was determined using the polymerase chain reaction-restricted fragment length polymorphism and sequencing method. The odds ratio and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated as a measure of the joint effect of NQO1 rs1800566 and iNOS (CCTTT)n polymorphisms on BC risk among cigarette smokers. RESULTS Compared with study participants carrying the C/C genotype of NQO1 gene, those with C/T and T/T genotypes had a significantly increased BC risk of 1.8 (95% CI = 1.1-2.9). Among cigarette smokers, those who carried the 12-repeat allele of iNOS (CCTTT)n polymorphism had a significantly increased BC risk of 2.7 (95% CI = 1.0-6.7). Furthermore, a significant combined effect of the C/T and T/T genotypes of NQO1gene and the 12-repeat allele of iNOS (CCTTT)n repeat polymorphism on BC was found among cigarette smokers (odds ratio = 4.4, 95% CI = 1.3-14.9). CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that a significant combined effect of NQO1 C/T and T/T genotypes and the 12-repeat allele of iNOS (CCTTT)n polymorphism on BC exists, especially in those with the habit of cigarette smoking.

Abstract
The aberrant activation of Wnt/β-catenin signaling plays an important role in the carcinogenesis and progression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Therefore, the Wnt/β-catenin signaling molecules are attractive candidates for the development of targeted therapies for this disease. The present study showed that destruxin B (DB) inhibits the proliferation and induces the apoptosis of HCC cells by decreasing the protein expression of anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL and increasing the expression of the proapoptotic protein Bax. More importantly, DB also attenuates Wnt-signaling in HCC cells by downregulating β-catenin, Tcf4, and β-catenin/Tcf4 transcriptional activity, which results in the decreased expression of β-catenin target genes, such as cyclin D1, c-myc, and survivin. Furthermore, DB affects the migratory and invasive abilities of Sk-Hep1 cells through the suppression of markers of the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). A synergistic anti-proliferative and migratory effect was achieved using the combination of DB and sorafenib in Sk-Hep1 cells. In conclusion, DB acts as a novel Wnt/β-catenin inhibitor and reduces the aggressiveness and invasive potential of HCC by altering the cells' EMT status and mobility. DB in combination with sorafenib may be considered for future clinical use for the management of metastatic HCC.

AIM To determine whether replacing Mg(2+) in magnesium lithospermate B (Mg-LSB) isolated from danshen (Salvia miltiorrhiza) with other metal ions could affect its potency in inhibition of Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase activity. METHODS Eight metal ions (Na(+), K(+), Mg(2+), Cr(3+), Mn(2+), Co(2+), Ni(2+), and Zn(2+)) were used to form complexes with LSB. The activity of Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase was determined by measuring the amount of inorganic phosphate (Pi) liberated from ATP. Human adrenergic neuroblastoma cell line SH-SY5Y was used to assess the intracellular Ca(2+) level fluctuation and cell viability. The metal binding site on LSB and the binding mode of the metal-LSB complexes were detected by NMR and visible spectroscopy, respectively. RESULTS The potencies of LSB complexed with Cr(3+), Mn(2+), Co(2+), or Ni(2+) increased by approximately 5 times compared to the naturally occurring LSB and Mg-LSB. The IC50 values of Cr-LSB, Mn-LSB, Co-LSB, Ni-LSB, LSB, and Mg-LSB in inhibition of Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase activity were 23, 17, 26, 25, 101, and 128 μmol/L, respectively. After treatment of SH-SY5Y cells with the transition metal-LSB complexes (25 μmol/L), the intracellular Ca(2+) level was substantially elevated, and the cells were viable for one day. The transition metals, as exemplified by Co(2+), appeared to be coordinated by two carboxylate groups and one carbonyl group of LSB. Titration of LSB against Co(2+) demonstrated that the Co-LSB complex was formed with a Co(2+):LSB molar ratio of 1:2 or 1:1, when [Co(2+)] was less than half of the [LSB] or higher than the [LSB], respectively. CONCLUSION LSB complexed with Cr(3+), Mn(2+), Co(2+), or Ni(2+) are stable, non-toxic and more potent in inhibition of Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase. The transition metal-LSB complexes have the potential to be superior substitutes for cardiac glycosides in the treatment of congestive heart failure.
