Abstract
Deliberation between possible options before making a decision is crucial to responding with an optimal choice. However, the neural mechanisms regulating this deliberative decision-making process are still unclear. Recent studies have proposed that the locus coeruleus-noradrenaline (LC-NA) system plays a role in attention, behavioral flexibility, and exploration, which contribute to the search for an optimal choice under uncertain situations. In the present study, we examined whether the LC-NA system relates to the deliberative process in a T-maze spatial decision-making task in rats. To quantify deliberation in rats, we recorded vicarious trial-and-error behavior (VTE), which is considered to reflect a deliberative process exploring optimal choices. In experiment 1, we manipulated the difficulty of choice by varying the amount of reward pellets between the two maze arms (0 vs. 4, 1 vs. 3, 2 vs. 2). A difficulty-dependent increase in VTE was accompanied by a reduction of choice bias toward the high reward arm and an increase in time required to select one of the two arms in the more difficult manipulation. In addition, the increase of c-Fos-positive NA neurons in the LC depended on the task difficulty and the amount of c-Fos expression in LC-NA neurons positively correlated with the occurrence of VTE. In experiment 2, we inhibited LC-NA activity by injection of clonidine, an agonist of the alpha2 autoreceptor, during a decision-making task (1 vs. 3). The clonidine injection suppressed occurrence of VTE in the early phase of the task and subsequently impaired a valuable choice later in the task. These results suggest that the LC-NA system regulates the deliberative process during decision-making.

Abstract
It is widely accepted that an efficient flood alarm system may significantly improve public safety and mitigate economical damages caused by inundations. In this paper, a modified adaptive neuro-fuzzy system is proposed to modify the traditional neuro-fuzzy model. This new method employs a rule-correction based algorithm to replace the error back propagation algorithm that is employed by the traditional neuro-fuzzy method in backward pass calculation. The final value obtained during the backward pass calculation using the rule-correction algorithm is then considered as a mapping function of the learning mechanism of the modified neuro-fuzzy system. Effectiveness of the proposed identification technique is demonstrated through a simulation study on the flood series of the Citarum River in Indonesia. The first four-year data (1987 to 1990) was used for model training/calibration, while the other remaining data (1991 to 2002) was used for testing the model. The number of antecedent flows that should be included in the input variables was determined by two statistical methods, i.e. autocorrelation and partial autocorrelation between the variables. Performance accuracy of the model was evaluated in terms of two statistical indices, i.e. mean average percentage error and root mean square error. The algorithm was developed in a decision support system environment in order to enable users to process the data. The decision support system is found to be useful due to its interactive nature, flexibility in approach, and evolving graphical features, and can be adopted for any similar situation to predict the streamflow. The main data processing includes gauging station selection, input generation, lead-time selection/generation, and length of prediction. This program enables users to process the flood data, to train/test the model using various input options, and to visualize results. The program code consists of a set of files, which can be modified as well to match other purposes. This program may also serve as a tool for real-time flood monitoring and process control. The results indicate that the modified neuro-fuzzy model applied to the flood prediction seems to have reached encouraging results for the river basin under examination. The comparison of the modified neuro-fuzzy predictions with the observed data was satisfactory, where the error resulted from the testing period was varied between 2.632% and 5.560%. Thus, this program may also serve as a tool for real-time flood monitoring and process control.

Abstract
Electron microscopy showed that whole-body gamma-irradiation in sublethal doses led to the appearance of injuries in pinealocytes, glial cells, and vessels of the pineal gland in rats. Limitation of the nonspecific effect of gamma-irradiation via inhibition of adrenocortical function with metopirone in physiological doses reduced the radiation-induced ultrastructural damage to the pineal gland.

Abstract
The emptying of gastric and colonic conduits following esophagectomy was evaluated. Ten consecutive patients who underwent esophagectomy for malignant diseases were divided into two groups as follows: Group I which consisted of 5 patients who underwent pyloroplasty and in whom the gastric greater curvature was used for reconstruction; and Group II which consisted of 5 patients in whom the colonic conduit was used because of previous gastrectomy. The conduits were placed in the retrosternal spaces in all the patients. The radiopaque markers swallowing test and digestive tract scintigraphy were performed to evaluate emptying two months after surgery. The radiopaque markers swallowing test demonstrated that marker rings quickly disappeared from the gastric conduits but remained in the colonic conduits for as long as three hours. Digestive tract scintigraphy demonstrated that there was no significant difference in the 60-minute clearance rate of 99mTc-DTPA from the conduits between the two groups. The results suggested that tiny food fragments remained in the haustral pockets of the colonic conduits, which may be a disadvantage of these conduits.

Abstract
The effect of gastrectomy on the subsequent development of esophageal cancer was investigated, focusing on its multicentric occurrence. We retrospectively evaluated 28 patients who underwent subtotal esophagectomy for intrathoracic esophageal cancer between 1985 and 1999. They were divided into two groups according to whether or not they had previously undergone a gastrectomy: group 1, comprising 7 patients who had undergone gastrectomy and group 2, comprising 21 patients who had not. Clinical profiles of the patients were obtained from the medical records and the whole resected esophagus was histopathologically examined. The interval between gastrectomy and esophagectomy in group 1 was significantly shorter in the patients who had undergone gastrectomy for gastric cancer than in those who had undergone gastrectomy for a peptic ulcer, and also in the patients for whom anastomosis had been performed by Billroth I compared with Billroth II. The patients in group 1 were significantly younger than those in group 2. The multiple occurrence of esophageal cancer was found in 4 of 5 patients (80%) in group 1, and in 2 of 18 patients (11%) in group 2, with significantly higher frequency being seen in group 1. More than two coexisting cancer lesions apart from the primary tumor were detected in all four patients. Histological examination of all the coexisting cancer lesions showed well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma confined within the superficial mucosal layer. No significant differences were noted in the location of the coexisting lesions between the oral and anal side of the primary tumors. Squamous dysplasia was randomly observed, especially around the cancer lesions. These findings suggest that gastrectomy precipitated subsequent chronic gastroesophageal reflux which in turn induced the development of squamous dysplasia and carcinoma at multiple locations in the esophagus.

Abstract
We examined changes in the concentrations of serum progesterone (P4), estradiol-17beta (E2), FSH, LH, prolactin (PRL), and inhibin to determine their interaction and their effect on the reproductive endocrine controls of pregnant and nonpregnant female Japanese black bears. Fourteen female bears were used in this study over a 2-yr period. In the first year, six of the bears were divided into two groups; a pseudopregnant group and a nonpregnant group. In the second year, the remaining eight bears were also divided into two groups; a pregnant group and a nonpregnant group. Pregnant and pseudopregnant bears had similar P4 trends with both groups exhibiting a significant increase in December, which is the suspected time of implantation in pregnant bears. These trends correlated with an increase in PRL levels, whereas low levels of LH were maintained throughout the year. Nonpregnant bears maintained low concentrations of P4, and compared with pregnant and pseudopregnant bears, they also exhibited a delayed elevation in PRL. Luteinizing hormone activity varied among individual animals, but regardless of reproductive status, fluctuation patterns of E2, FSH, and inhibin did not differ among bears. Our results suggest that PRL may play a luteotropic role in both pregnant and pseudopregnant bears, and is possibly responsible for inducing reactivation of the dormant corpus luteum that precedes implantation in the Japanese black bear.

Abstract
Among the diverse clinical presentations of gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST), spontaneous rupture with peritonitis is extremely rare. We report herein the unusual case of a 75-year-old man found to have a spontaneously ruptured gastric stromal tumor after presenting with generalized peritonitis. The patient was brought to the emergency department of our hospital by ambulance, with generalized severe abdominal pain. On examination, his abdomen was extensively distended with generalized severe rebound tenderness. Abdominal computed tomography scan showed a giant mass arising from the anterior gastric wall with an irregular internal low-density area and a small amount of ascites. An emergency laparotomy revealed a ruptured gastric tumor with dissemination of its necrotic tissue throughout the peritoneal cavity. The tumor was excised together with normal gastric tissue around its base. The tumor, which was 15 x 11 x 4.4cm in size, had a coarse laceration over its well-capsulated smooth serosal surface with massive necrosis and clotted blood inside. Immunohistochemical examination revealed positive reactivity to C-kit protein, which was consistent with the newly introduced diagnostic criteria of GIST. The patient had an uneventful postoperative course and remains well.

Abstract
The Japanese black bear, Ursus thibetanus japonicus, is a seasonal breeder and shows delayed implantation for several months during pregnancy. The objective of this study was to clarify the steroidogenic capability of the corpus luteum and placenta during pregnancy, including both delayed implantation and fetal development, by immunolocalization of steroidogenic enzymes in these organs of the Japanese black bear. Ovaries and placentae from 15 wild Japanese black bears, which had been killed legally by hunters and were thought to be pregnant, were used in an immunocytochemical study to localize the cholesterol side chain cleavage cytochrome P450 (P450scc), 3beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3betaHSD), 17alpha-hydroxylase cytochrome P450 (P450c17) and aromatase cytochrome P450 (P450arom) by the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex method using polyclonal antisera raised in mammals against P450scc, 3betaHSD, P450c17 and P450arom. P450scc and 3betaHSD were localized in all luteal cells throughout pregnancy. P450c17 was present in a few luteal cells, especially in the outer area of the corpus luteum throughout pregnancy, but the number of positively immunostained cells decreased during the post-implantation period. Cells positively immunostained for P450c17 were significantly smaller than negatively immunostained cells (P < 0.01). P450arom was present sporadically in a few luteal cells throughout pregnancy, but the number of positively immunostained cells decreased during the post-implantation period. The size of cells positively immunostained for P450arom was not significantly different from that of negatively immunostained cells. The whole placenta was negatively immunostained for P450scc, 3betaHSD and P450c17, but P450arom was present in the syncytiotrophoblasts and endothelial cells of maternal blood vessels. These results indicate that, in the Japanese black bear, corpora lutea are a source of progesterone which may play an important role in the maintenance of delayed implantation and fetal development during pregnancy. Corpora lutea have a minimum capability to synthesize androgen in small luteal cells and oestrogen in normal-sized luteal cells during pregnancy, and placentae have the ability to synthesize oestrogen during late pregnancy.

Abstract
This study characterized semen collected from the Japanese black bear, Ursus thibetanus aponicus, to provide information on semen cryopreservation for artificial breeding. Preliminary studies using a beagle dog as the model species showed that sperm concentration and total sperm count were lower in semen collected by electroejaculation than in semen collected by digital manipulation, but that sperm motility, viability and morphology were similar. Characterization of semen obtained from Japanese black bears by electroejaculation under general anesthesia revealed that semen volume and total number of spermatozoa collected were lower; but that sperm concentration, motility, viability and morphology were equivalent to those reported in other ursids. When semen was collected via a catheter inserted into the urethra during the stimulation for ejaculation, the sperm concentration, total sperm count and motility were relatively higher than when semen was collected directly in a test tube. Specific normal semen characteristics (mean +/- SEM) were pH, 7.6 +/- 0.0; volume, 0.212 +/- 0.038 mL; sperm concentration, 361 +/- 100 x 10(6)/mL; total sperm count, 84.0 +/- 32.2 x 106; +++ motility, 30 +/- 5%; motility, 77 +/- 3%; viability 77 +/- 2%; and abnormal morphology, 11+/- 2%. These results suggest that semen can be collected from Japanese black bears by electroejaculation.

Abstract
Yawing was induced by microinjections of L-glutamate, cyanide and a nitric oxide-releasing compound (NOC12) into the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN) in anesthetized, spontaneously breathing rats. To evaluate physiological aspects of yawning, we monitored intercostal electromyogram (EMG) as an index of inspiratory activity, digastric EMG, blood pressure and electrocorticogram (ECoG). Microinjection of L-glutamate in the medial parvocellular subdivision (mp) elicited a stereotyped yawning response, i.e. an initial depressor response and an arousal shift in ECoG followed by a single large inspiration with mouth opening. The same sequential events were observed during spontaneous yawning, indicating that the mp is responsible for triggering yawning. Microinjection of cyanide into the mp caused the same yawning responses as the ones elicited by microinjection of L-glutamate, suggesting that the mp is sensitive to chemical hypoxia or ischemia within the PVN. Microinjection of NOC12 into the mp elicited a single large inspiration with a variable onset delay, suggesting that diffusible nitric oxide (NO) within the mp may act as a paracrine agent to cause a yawning response. We hypothesize that the mp of the PVN contains an oxygen sensor that causes a yawning response.

Abstract
The present study attempts to clarify the properties of force-time curves in the force-development phase during static explosive grip exertion and to determine force-time parameters in relation to static explosive strength. 80 healthy young males (age 17.8 +/- 2.5 yr.) exerted maximal isometric force as fast and forcefully as possible. In total, 21 variables, e.g., time to fixed level, integrated area, average force, integrated area to fixed time, force at the maximal rate of force development, and maximal rate of force development, were selected as force-time parameters. Good reliability was obtained for average force in force levels above 90% of maximal strength (.64-.93), integrated area to a fixed time of 1.0-2.0 sec. (.86-.93), force at the maximal rate of force development (.67), and maximal rate of force development (.73). In addition, these values correlated closely with maximal grip strength (r= .65-.93). Further, significant differences in maximal grip strength, average force in force levels above 90% of maximal strength, integrated area to fixed time, and force at the maximal rate of force development were found among three groups categorized by average force in force levels of maximal strength. These results suggested that individual differences were present in the force-time curve patterns during the force-development phase of static explosive grip exertion and that the average force in force levels of maximal strength might be a valuable tool for evaluating static explosive strength.

Abstract
Progesterone (P4) and estradiol-17beta (E2) concentrations were measured in serum samples obtained from 23 captive and 23 free-ranging adult female Japanese black bears. We then determined the relationship between changes in these sex steroid hormones and pregnancy. In all captive bears, which included animals of both known and unknown reproductive status, serum P4 concentrations were low from April to July, then tended to become higher after August. The levels then became much higher still in November and December, but returned to low levels in March. Serum P4 concentrations in eight captive pregnant bears, which had parturitions the following spring, increased gradually from August (0.5-2.4 ng/ml) to October (0.9-3.6 ng/ml), and achieved significantly higher maximum levels in December (7.2-18.0 ng/ml). Thereafter, serum P4 concentrations tended to decrease (3.5-6.4 ng/ml in January and 0.3-0.7 ng/ml in March). In all captive bears, serum E2 concentrations varied from April to October but showed low levels in November and December, and became high in January. Serum E2 concentrations in the eight pregnant bears were high in May (95.6-191.4 pg/ml) and varied from August to October (35.6-143.3 pg/ml). Subsequently, serum E2 concentrations in December dropped to significantly lower minimum levels (5.3-11.9 pg/ml) and increased again in January (67.6-153.1 pg/ml). Among the free-ranging bears, the data on serum P4 concentrations in eight bears led to expectations of pregnancy, whereas serum E2 concentrations showed no distinct evidence related to pregnancy. These results, particularly in captive pregnant bears, indicate that a marked increase of P4 in December might be accompanied by reactivation of the corpus luteum preceding implantation. Furthermore, changes in E2 concentrations suggested the possibility that a decline in December and an increase in January are associated with implantation and parturition, respectively.

Abstract
To clarify whether or not the lymphatic routes that have long been generally accepted are indeed correct, we retrospectively examined the clinical records of patients with solitary lymph node metastasis from gastric carcinoma. From 735 patients gastrectomized with lymph node dissection (more than D1), 51 (7%) were histologically proven to have only one lymph node involved. In 44 of these 51 patients, the involved nodes were all in the perigastric region (N1). There were also 7 patients with a jumping metastasis to the N2-N3 nodes. Three of them were found along the left gastric artery (#7 according to Japanese classification) and the other 4 were found along either the common hepatic artery (#8) or the proper hepatic artery (#12). The depth of invasion was submucosal in 2, proper-muscular in 2, subserosal in 1, and serosa-exposed in 2, and the conclusive stage was II in 2, IIIa in 3, and IIIb in 2. However, 1 of these patients died of liver cirrhosis and 2 died of pneumonia, while the other 4 were still alive at the time of this report more than 5 years after surgery. These results suggest that not every sentinel node is located in the perigastric region near the primary tumor and that, if the preoperative examination indicates submucosal invasion, then a systematic regional lymph node dissection should therefore be carried out.

Abstract
Yawning was evoked by electrical or chemical stimulation in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of anesthetized, spontaneously breathing rats. To evaluate physiological aspects of yawning, we monitored polygraphic measures as follows; a coordinated motor pattern of yawning was assessed by monitoring breathing [intercostal electromyogram (EMG)], mouth opening (digastric EMG), and stretching of the trunk (back EMG). We also recorded blood pressure (BP), heart rate, and the electrocorticogram (ECoG) to evaluate autonomic function and arousal responses during yawning. A stereotyped yawning response was reproducibly evoked by electrical stimulation or microinjection of -glutamate or NOC-7, a nitric oxide (NO)-releasing compound, into the PVN. The stereotyped yawning response consisted of two sequential events, an initial response represented a depressor response and an arousal shift in the ECoG to lower voltage and faster rhythms. These initial changes were followed by a yawning behavior characterized by a single large inspiration with mouth opening and stretching of the trunk. A similar sequence of events occurred during spontaneous yawning; a fall in BP and ECoG arousal preceded a yawning behavior. An increase in the frequency of spontaneous yawns was also observed after microinjection of -glutamate or NOC-7 into the PVN. Intravenous administration of NG-monomethyl--arginine, an inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase (NOS), prevented the stereotyped yawning response evoked by chemical stimulation of the PVN. Histological examination revealed that effective sites for the yawning responses were located in the medial part of the rostral PVN, the site of parvocellular and magnocellular neurons. NADPH-diaphorase histochemistry showed the existence of NOS-containing cells in yawning-evoked sites of the PVN. In summary, the sequential events of yawning may be generated by NOS-containing parvocellular neurons in the medial part of the rostral PVN projecting to the lower brain stem.

Abstract
We report herein the unusual case of a 59-year-old woman with Plummer-Vinson syndrome who developed gastric cancer. The patient had a longstanding history of dysphagia and iron deficiency anemia, for which she had sporadically taken iron supplements that improved the dysphagia to some extent, but not completely. Owing to her tolerance of the dysphagia, she had not been taking iron supplements for the past 17 years. On admission, she was in fair nutritional condition and not anemic. Blood chemistry results were all normal, including the serum iron level. Gastrointestinal radiographic series demonstrated cervical esophageal webs and advanced gastric cancer. Her dysphagia was successfully treated by endoscopic bougienage through the webs, and a distal partial gastrectomy with nodal dissection was performed. Histology of the resected stomach revealed atrophic mucosal change and, by chance, an adenomatous lesion in addition to adenocarcinoma. Her postoperative course was uneventful and she is now well, without any signs of recurrence. Although Plummer-Vinson syndrome is known to be associated with upper alimentary tract cancers, gastric cancer is extremely rare. A discussion on the etiology of Plummer-Vinson syndrome and its link with potential carcinogenesis follows this case report.

Abstract
We evaluated the therapeutic efficacy of intraarterial infusion chemotherapy in advanced gastric cancer, its side effect and patient prognosis, in comparison with systemic infusion. Of 125 cases of advanced gastric cancer, 41 cases received intraarterial chemotherapy (A group) and the rest were given systemic infusion (S group). Protocols of chemotherapy were 5-FU + MTX in 49 cases, 5-FU + cisplatin in 62, and 5-FU + MMC in 14. Location of the disease was the peritoneum in 69 cases, nodes in 59, liver in 38, and other sites, 33. The response rate of A group was significantly higher than that of S group, at 31% and 13% respectively. Although 41% of cases showed side effects (> or = grade 2), there was no significant difference between the 2 groups. The median survival period and 1-year survival rate were 8.4 months and 35%, respectively, and there was no significant difference between the 2 groups. In cases with liver metastasis, the prognosis of A group was better than that of S group. The results suggest that intra-arterial infusion chemotherapy is an effective treatment for liver metastasis from gastric cancer.

Abstract
The postural control system has been extensively studied in terms of somatic motor function but little is known about its connection with human autonomic function. The purpose of this study was to determine the cardiorespiratory changes in response to the 1-min balance test that was performed by standing on one leg with eyes closed (SOLEC) or eyes open (SOLEO) in 12 healthy young women [mean age 20.7 (SD 3.3) years]. Heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), duration of inspiration and expiration, tidal volume (VT), and oxygen uptake (VO2) were measured during the test. The SOLEC test produced rapid increases in HR at the onset. There were significant increases in HR later during the test (P < 0.05). Metabolic rate (VO2) showed a gradual increase during the SOLEC test, indicating that the late responses could have been partly due to metabolic changes. The RR increased significantly at the onset of the test (P < 0.05), and remained elevated until the end of the test. The early responses were considered to be mediated neurally through the postural control system which receives the afferent inputs arising from the vestibular system and from muscle proprioceptors of the leg. In contrast, SOLEO caused small insignificant changes in HR, RR, VT and VO2, suggesting that a visual input is essential for balancing a postural change. The SOLEC test may have potential as a test of autonomic function.

Abstract
This study examined the effects of negative air ion exposure on the human cardiovascular and endocrine systems during rest and during the recovery period following moderate endurance exercise. Ten healthy adult men were studied in the presence (8,000-10,000 cm-3) or absence (200-400 cm-3) of negative air ions (25 degrees C, 50% humidity) after 1 h of exercise. The level of exercise was adjusted to represent a 50-60% load compared with the subjects' maximal oxygen uptake, which was determined using a bicycle ergometer in an unmodified environment (22-23 degrees C, 30-35% humidity, 200-400 negative air ions.cm-3). The diastolic blood pressure (DBP) values during the recovery period were significantly lower in the presence of negative ions than in their absence. The plasma levels of serotonin (5-HT) and dopamine (DA) were significantly lower in the presence of negative ions than in their absence. These results demonstrated that exposure to negative air ions produced a slow recovery of DBP and decreases in the levels of 5-HT and DA in the recovery period after moderate endurance exercise. 5-HT is thought to have contributed to the slow recovery of DBP.

Abstract
Thirteen patients with advanced gastric cancer treated by palliative radiotherapy were retrospectively analyzed. The radiation sites were abdominal cavities in 8 cases, superficial masses in 5 and lung metastasis in one. The purposes were to diminish mass size in 5 cases, to relieve pain in 3 and to reduce stenosis in 6. The total doses were more than 40 Gy in 10 patients. In 2 cases, the intracavitary irradiation was performed using 192Ir. In one case, radiation had to be stopped at the dose of 22.5 Gy because of poor general condition. Partial response was obtained in 6 of 12 cases (RP, 50%). The sites of responders were superficial lesions in 4 and hepatic hilar mass in 2, which were given intracavitary as well as external radiation. Pain relief was achieved in all patients suffering from it. One of 3 cases with esophageal stenosis showed marked improvement in swallowing. Two patients showed a decrease in the levels of tumor markers. Five patients had side effects of more than grade 2. Two of them were grade 3, one thrombocytopenia and one diarrhea. The median survival time of all cases was 9 months, and 5 patients could shift to home care. These results suggest that palliative radiotherapy could be one of the most useful locoregional therapies for advanced gastric cancer, in the aspect of improvement of patient's QOL.

Abstract
We analyzed the clinical response, toxicities, out-patient and overall survival time among 41 gastric cancer patients with peritoneal metastasis to evaluate chemotherapies and drug delivery routes. Sixteen patients were treated by arterial infusion (AI) and 25 by systemic therapy (ST), with either 5-FU/MTX (FMTX) therapy or 5-FU/CDDP (FP) therapy. Partial response was observed in 8 patients (50%) among 16 with AI and in 6 (24%) among 25 with ST (p = 0.09). There were no differences in the incidence of side effects (> or = grade 2 according to WHO criteria) between AI and ST group, at 25% and 36%, respectively. No significant differences were observed in either survival time or home care duration among patients with AI chemotherapy and those with ST procedure.

Abstract
Immunolocalization for four steroidogenic enzymes was performed on an ovary taken from a Hokkaido brown bear during the mating season. This specimen is considered to be in the follicular phase because of the presence of large follicles. In large follicles, cholesterol side-chain cleavage (P450scc) and 3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3 beta HSD) were immunolocalized in theca interna cells and granulosa cells. 17 alpha-hydroxylase/C17-C20 lyase cytochrome P450 (P450c 17) was immunolocalized in theca interna cells but not in granulosa cells. Aromatase cytochrome P450 (P450arom) was immunolocalized only in granulosa cells. In medium follicles, however, P450scc and 3 beta HSD were immunolocalized only in theca interna cells, and the immunoreactivity of P450arom was detected in neither theca interna cells nor granulosa cells. Immunoreactivities of P450scc, 3 beta HSD and P450c 17 but not P450arom were detected in interstitial cells. This study suggests that estrogen biosynthesis takes place through interrelation between theca cells and granulosa cells and is explained by the so-called two-cell mechanism. Furthermore, the granulosa cells in large follicles have the capability for pregnenolone and progesterone biosynthesis, and the interstitial cell in the bear ovary is also a steroidogenic site.

Abstract
We present a case of portal-systemic encephalopathy due to a congenital splenorenal shunt. A 69 year old woman was admitted to hospital because of recurrent episodes of disturbed consciousness. The present episode had begun 3 months prior to admission. Although the patient demonstrated mildly slurred speech, the remainder of her neurological examination was unremarkable. She showed no clinical signs of portal hypertension and her liver function, except for a serum hepaplastin test of 58% and an ICG retention rate of 28% at 15 min, was normal. Her serum ammonium level was 210 micrograms/dL. The venous phase of a superior mesenteric arteriogram revealed a splenorenal shunt and narrowing of the portal vein, which was 4 mm in diameter. The histological findings, demonstrated by a needle liver biopsy specimen, were consistent with mild fibrosis and lymphocytic infiltration. Following the diagnosis of a splenorenal shunt in the absence of liver cirrhosis, ligature of the shunt was performed with a splenectomy. The portal vein pressure after ligature of the shunt rose from 12.5 to 18.8 mmHg. This shunt was thought to be of congenital origin. The high preoperative serum ammonia concentration decreased to the normal range postoperatively and the serum hepaplastin test and ICG retention rate similarly improved postoperatively. A follow-up superior mesenteric arteriogram was performed during the venous phase, demonstrating resolution of the shunt and decreased portal vein narrowing. The patient has suffered no further episodes of disturbed consciousness postoperatively.

Abstract
We report herein two cases of carcinoma in situ of the gallbladder associated with cholesterosis. The patient in case 1 was an 81-year-old man who underwent a cholecystectomy for cholelithiasis. The resected specimens revealed gallbladder cancer in the fundus which was diagnosed histologically as mucinous carcinoma. Other findings included 13-mm, 12-mm, and 5-mm polypoid lesions in the neck of the gallbladder which macroscopically appeared to be cholesterol polyps, but histologically demonstrated carcinoma in situ with cholesterosis. The patient in case 2 was a 76-year-old man in whom ultrasonography revealed a highly echogenic, elevated lesion in the gallbladder. Cholecystectomy was performed, and a 33 x 28-mm papillary, elevated lesion with cholesterosis was resected from the neck of the gallbladder. Histologically, this was demonstrated to be papillary adenocarcinoma in situ with cholesterosis surrounded by glandular dysplasia. The distribution of the carcinomas and cholesterosis in both of these patients suggests that the adenoma or carcinoma of the gallbladder had occurred first. Then, the tumor epithelium absorbed cholesterol from the bile, and foamy cells were produced. Thus, when treating cholesterol polyps, it should be remembered that it is often difficult to distinguish between cholesterol polyp and gallbladder cancer with cholesterosis.

Abstract
Postural control system has been extensively studied in terms of somatic motor function, but little is known about its connection with human autonomic function. The purpose of this study was to determine the cardiorespiratory changes in response to the 3-min load that was performed by balancing one's whole body on one leg with eyes closed (SOLEC load) or eyes open (SOLEO load) in 11 healthy young subjects (5 males and 6 females, mean age 20.8 +/- 1.9 year). Blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), inspiratory and expiratory duration (Ti and Te), tidal volume (VT), and oxygen uptake (VO2) were measured before, during, and after the load. The SOLEC load produced significant increases in HR and systolic BP within 1 min. There were further increases in systolic and diastolic BP during the late period of the load. Metabolic rate (VO2) showed a gradual increase during the SOLEC load, indicating that the late responses would be partly due to metabolic alteration. The early responses are considered to be mediated neurally through the postural control system which receives the afferent inputs arising from vestibular system and from muscle proprioceptors of the leg. Abstract
Corpora lutea of the sika deer (Cervus nippon, Cervidae) were histologically examined in order to elucidate their retrograding processes after parturition. They showed a remarkable regression within one month as luteal cells decreased in number and, by nine months after parturition, turned into masses of blood vessels containing many arterioles with a diameter of 30 microns or less. In retrograde corpora lutea (RCL), older than 1.5 years after parturition, arterioles of these dimensions decreased markedly, while those measuring 50 microns or more became dominant. These findings indicate that an examination of RCL can distinguish females less than nine months after parturition from those more than 1.5 years after parturition. Based on the findings of RCL from the ovaries of a 10.5-year-old female, it is suggested that RCL remain in the ovaries for at least 8.5 years after parturition. It was, however, difficult to distinguish RCL of pregnancy from retrograde accessory corpora lutea (RACL). In order to arrive at a complete count of RCL, the ovaries should be examined at thicknesses of 0.5 mm. To check the presence/absence of RCL of pregnancy within nine months or less after parturition, sectioning at thicknesses of 2 mm is sufficient.

Abstract
We analyzed the clinical response, toxicities, ambulatory and overall survival time among 51 patients with inoperable gastric cancer, to evaluate chemotherapies and drug delivery routes. Twenty-nine patients were treated by Methotrexate/5-FU (FMTX) therapy and 22 by 5-FU/CDDP (FP) therapy. Twenty-five patients were treated by intra-arterial (IA) route and 26 by intra-venous (IV). The response rate of IA therapy was higher than that of IV therapy (p < 0.05), 48% and 19%, respectively. Median survival times of FMTX and FP were 361 and 289 days, respectively, and the 1-year survival rates of FMTX and FP were 44% and 33%, respectively, with no significant differences. Duration of home chemotherapy with FMTX was longer than that with FP, at 130 and 85 days, respectively. There was no difference between duration of home chemotherapy of IA and that of IV. IA chemotherapy showed a higher response rate than IV, but there were no differences in the incidence of side effects and ambulatory and overall survival time.

Abstract
The response of gastric cancer to intravenous application of low-dose CDDP plus 5-fluorouracil (FP) was assessed by changes in DNA indices (DIs) and PCNA labeling indices (LIs) by flow cytometry, and by the thymidylate synthetase inhibition rate (TSIR). Pretherapy samples were compared to specimens resected at operation. FP therapy was performed in 10 of 26 specimens and not in the others (C). There was no difference between change in DIs of FP group and that of C group. In FP group, PCNA LI of resected specimen was higher than that of biopsy, although they showed almost the same values in C group. Change in PCNA LIs correlated to TSIR in FP group. These results suggest that FP therapy affects gastric cancer cells in PCNA LIs and TSIR, and that PCNA LIs could be an indicator of the effect of FP therapy as TSIR.

Abstract
We report a rare case of gallbladder cancer associated with a common bile duct neuroma, and a cystic liver lesion with histologic findings similar to an inflammatory pseudotumor, in a patient who had had no previous abdominal surgery. The patient was a 62-year-old man whose major complaint was fever. Ultrasonography and a computed tomography scan revealed gallstones, an elevated lesion in the gallbladder, and a cystic liver lesion. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography demonstrated stenosis of the common bile duct. Cultures of the cystic fluid and gallbladder bile were positive for Staphylococcus aureus. The patient underwent hepatectomy (inferior S4, S5, and S6), cholecystectomy, resection of the common bile duct, and right hemicolectomy. The resected specimens revealed gallbladder cancer with the microscopic appearance of a papillary adenocarcinoma, and a 12 x 4.5 x 3.5 cm cystic liver lesion with a wall 7 mm thick. Histologic studies of the wall of the cystic liver lesion revealed infiltration by histiocytes and plasma cells, and the presence of fibrous connective tissue, which findings are characteristic of inflammatory pseudotumors. A 9 x 6 mm elevated lesion, with the microscopic appearance of a neuroma, was resected from the common bile duct.

Abstract
Mammary glands and teats were examined to estimate the reproductive history of Japanese serows. The presence of milk was an indicator of reproduction in the previous year. The thickness of the mammary glands is indicative of their function. The females whose mammary glands are more than 10 mm thick may be regarded as having delivered half a year before. The distance between teats is not always indicative of the function of the mammary glands. Animals with teats 10 mm or less in length and those with teats longer than 10 mm may be judged to be nulliparous and multiparous, respectively.

Abstract
1. The retrograde labelling study revealed that there are at least two independent descending pathways from the limbic system to the ventral medulla, i.e., the hypothalamo-medullary pathway and the amygdalo-medullary pathway. 2. The stimulation in the lateral hypothalamic area produced parasympathetic excitation and vocalization response: the recruited motor unit of CT muscle occurred in the late expiratory phase. By contrast, the stimulation at the medial part of the amygdala evoked sympathetic excitation and expiratory braking: the recruited motor unit of CT muscle occurred in the early expiratory phase or in the post-in-spiratory phase. 3. The present physiological study provided further important information on dual innervation of the cricothyroid muscle of the larynx: one motor unit with inspiratory firing is generated in the medulla, whereas the other motor unit with expiratory firing is evoked by a descending input from the limbic system.

Abstract
Two cases of hepatic metastasis of colorectal cancer were treated effectively by intrahepatic-arterial infusion immunotherapy using OK-432 (2 KE/week or 2 weeks), recombinant IL-2 (35 x 10(4) JRU or 40 x 10(4) JRU/week or 2 weeks), MMC (4 mg/week or 2 weeks) and 5-FU (250 mg/day during admission, 250 mg/week or 2 weeks during outpatient treatment). The levels of CEA were decreased from 17.2 ng/ml to 2.4 ng/ml after 8 weeks in the first case (50 y. o. male) and from 521 ng/ml to 66 ng/ml after 8 weeks in the second case (36 y. o. female), respectively. Abdominal CT revealed a partial response for 11 months in the first case and 6.5 months in the second case.

Abstract
We have proposed a hypothesis that secondary neurons mediating central respiratory chemoreception are not restricted to the medullary superficial layer. This idea was further examined in the present physiological and morphological studies. We identified the 'S' area, i.e. the medullary surface area where cold blockade produced apnea, in anesthetized, spontaneously breathing cat. We then evaluated how the apnea was modified by injection of CO2-saturated saline into the vertebral-basilar artery. The CO2 injection caused immediate reappearance of respiratory rhythm, although intensity of inspiratory activity was smaller than in the control. This incomplete recovery suggests that the responsive structure extends deeply below the surface. The extent of the cell group underlying the 'S' area was evaluated by morphological study. Medullary transverse sections including the 'S' area were treated with three distinct antisera against phenylethanolamine N-methyltransferase (PNMT), dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (DBH), and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT). The PNMT-labelled cell group was found to exactly underlie the 'S' area, although the DBH- and the 5-HT-labelled cell groups did not show close topographic correlation with the 'S' area. PNMT cells were located in the region ventral to retrofacial nucleus within 0.5-1.5 mm depth beneath the surface. These results suggest that adrenergic cells in the rostral ventrolateral medulla are important candidates for secondary neurons mediating central respiratory chemoreception.

Abstract
Eighteen patients with gastric cancer with peritoneal metastasis were treated with methotrexate/5-fluorouracil sequential therapy. In four patients, a partial response was obtained and in another four, symptomatic relief was obtained by the therapy. As side effects, BM suppression was seen in 9 and GI symptoms in 6 patients. Intraaortic, low-dose and 3-hour-interval procedure are recommended in the therapy.

Abstract
The objective was the immunocytochemical localization of steroidogenic enzymes in the corpus luteum of Hokkaido brown bears during the period of delayed implantation. Cholesterol side-chain cleavage cytochrome P450 (P450scc), 3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3 beta HSD), 17 alpha-hydroxylase cytochrome P450 (P450c17) and aromatase cytochrome P450 (P450arom) were localized as biosynthetic sites of pregnenolone, progesterone, androgens, and oestrogens, respectively. Ovaries containing corpora lutea were obtained from three mature bears during the expected delayed implantation period and ovarian sections were immunostained by the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex method using polyclonal antibodies generated against steroidogenic enzymes of mammalian origin. P450scc and 3 beta HSD were localized in all luteal cells, whereas P450c17 (0.4-5.1% of 1000 cells) and P450arom (7.1-11.2% of 1000 cells) were localized in only a few luteal cells. These data suggest that luteal cells contain steroidogenic enzymes required for progesterone synthesis but also have a minimum capability for synthesizing androgen and oestrogen during the delayed implantation period in Hokkaido brown bears.

Abstract
The present study has revealed that a hiccup-like response (a brief powerful inspiratory activity accompanied by glottic adduction) can be generated by electrical stimulation to a limited area within the medullary reticular formation of the cat. This finding indicates that there is a neuronal network coordinating the hiccup reflex within the lower brain stem.

Abstract
Histological characteristics of retrograde corpora lutea (RCL) were examined for 105 pairs of ovaries of adult female sika deer, Cervus nippon. Animals were captured in various seasons at Mt. Goyo, Iwate Prefecture, the northern part of Japan. No histological differences were recognizable between RCL of pregnancy and retrograde accessory corpora lutea (RACL), so far as examined by means of hematoxylin-eosin and Weigert's resorcin-fuchsin staining. They were both irregularly shaped and had well developed arteries in their thick capsules and a number of small arteries in the parenchyma. These arteries showed the proliferation of elastic fibers showing elastosis in older RCL. The total number of these retrograded bodies per female increased with age, suggesting that both the retrograded bodies would retain in the ovaries over 7 years. RCL of estrus were small hyaline bodies scattered with some degenerated luteal cells in the hyaline matrix. They were distinguishable from those of pregnancy since the capsule and parenchyma in those of estrus were poorer in blood vessels. RCL of estrus appeared in October and November but were rarely seen in February and March, suggesting that they will disappear within three months after ovulation.

Abstract
Out of 2,138 pregnant Japanese serows (Capricornis crispus), one case of the maceration of fetus was found in the winter of 1991, and examined pathologically. Because the fetus was covered with the hairs in the head and the neck regions, the fetus seemed to be implanted in the last breeding season and retained. The endometrium lacked the placentomes completely and showed metaplasia to the keratinized or non-keratinized squamous epithelium. In the non-keratinized region, the accumulation of neutrophils, eosinophils, lymphocytes, plasma cells and foreign giant cells was prominent in the subepithelial connective tissue.

Abstract
Changes in serum and intrapancreatic enzyme content and protein synthesis in pancreas were studied in acute oedematous pancreatitis (AOP). Male Wistar rats (n = 111) were divided into 2 groups, controls with a sham operation and those with AOP. Serum amylase levels rose immediately after the procedure causing AOP and then fell gradually, while serum lipase and ribonuclease levels remained higher than control values over 48 h. (p < 0.05, 0.01). Serum deoxyribonuclease (DNase) II levels were unchanged. Intrapancreatic enzyme levels were scarcely affected by AOP. 3H-leucine uptake into pancreatic tissue of rats with AOP was decreased throughout the study (p < 0.001), but some protein synthesis continued. Intrapancreatic enzyme contents are maintained despite diffusion into the blood because the pancreas retain its ability to synthesize enzymes.

Abstract
Hokkaido brown bears (Ursus arctos yesoensis) are seasonal breeders and the profile of their serum testosterone concentrations undergoes annual changes. However, precise sites of steroidogenesis in the bear testis have not been identified. Therefore, our objective was to localize steroidogenic enzymes by immunocytochemistry using polyclonal antibodies generated against steroidogenic enzymes of mammalian origin. The steroidogenic enzymes localized were cholesterol side-chain cleavage cytochrome P450 (P450scc), 3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3 beta-HSD), 17 alpha-hydroxylase cytochrome P450 (P450c17), and aromatase cytochrome P450 (P450arom) as biosynthetic sites of pregnenolone, progesterone or androstenedione, androgens, and estrogens, respectively. Testes were collected from three adult bears prior to the mating season (April, Hokkaido, Japan) and prepared for immunostaining with primary antibodies, followed by an avidin-biotin-peroxidase method. P450scc was localized in Leydig cells and spermatids. 3 beta-HSD was found only in Leydig cells. P450c17 was identified in Leydig cells and spermatids. Finally, P450arom was found in Leydig cells and in spermatids that stained very intensely. Therefore, Leydig cells appear to be a site of progestin (both delta 4 and delta 5 C21 steroids), androgen, and estrogen production, whereas spermatids appear to be a site of pregnenolone, androgen, and estrogen production. Immunolocalization of steroidogenic enzymes suggests that steroidogenesis may occur not only in Leydig cells, but also in spermatids of the Hokkaido brown bear testis prior to the mating season. We also suggest that Leydig cells and spermatids are the predominant sites of androgen and estrogen synthesis, respectively, in the Hokkaido brown bear testis.

Abstract
A cellular association demarcated by two perpendiculars which were drawn between adjacent bundles of elongate spermatids from the tubular lumen to the basement membrane, was made the unit of histometrical observation in this study (provisionally called a "column"). Cell counting revealed that the average numbers per column of various types of germ cells do not show any significant differences among 5 fowls and between paired testes. The frequency of spermiogenic steps (numbered 1-8) was investigated in each column. A definite and common pattern was found in the frequency distribution in the 5 fowls observed. A relationship between spermiation and younger spermatid steps was also investigated in each column. The spermiation was found at different steps, but most frequently at step 2 (30.6%). Based on these observations and referring to other author's information, an average time interval between two successive spermiations was calculated roughly at 3.3 +/- 1.2 days. Theoretically, this value is equal to an average length of one epithelial cycle. Such a variable cycle may have caused irregular cellular associations in this species.

Abstract
It was investigated in the domestic fowl, whether a mechanism for a synchronous start of the proliferation of the differentiating spermatogonia in a transversely cut seminiferous tubule (called the "co-ordination" between germ cell association) operates effectively in this species. A trapezoid-shaped cellular association demarcated by two perpendiculars from the tubular lumen to the basement membrane was the unit of observation (provisionally called a "column" Each column is composed of a bundle of elongate spermatids and the neighbouring, various types of germ cells). The extent of closeness of the co-ordination was examined in a total of 2,650 columns, based on the continuity of the spermiogenic step-number of the youngest generation of spermatids within adjacent columns. In no case did all columns in a tubular cross section show the same-step spermatids. In most cases (50.2% of 2,650 columns), the same number was kept in only 2 to 6 adjacent columns. The arrangement of different but consecutive numbers (e.g., 1-2-3 or 1-2-1) was observed in a total of 882 columns. The co-ordination mechanism, therefore, is considered to work, albeit incomplete, among a limited number of adjacent columns in this species.

Abstract
Sixteen patients with recurrent or unresectable gastric cancer were treated by intraarterial infusion chemotherapy. The tip of the catheter was located at the 9-10th Th level in the aorta of 14 patients and in the common hepatic artery of two. The drug combination was methotrexate + 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), cisplatin, mitomycin C (MMC) + etoposide and MMC + 5-FU. Side effects such as bone marrow suppression, diarrhea and appetite loss were seen in 63% (10/16). The response rate was 36% (4/11) in those who were evaluated, and another three showed relief from symptoms. Median survival time was 11 months, and the one year survival rate was 41%, while two patients showing PR have been alive for more than one year.

Abstract
This study was performed to clarify the movement of calcium in the pancreas of dogs with chronic pancreatitis, using scanning and transmission electron microscopes (SEM, TEM) equipped with X-ray elemental microanalyzers. Eleven adult mongrel dogs underwent incomplete ligation of the pancreatic duct. After the procedure, the levels of pancreatic enzymes in the serum did not change for 9 mo, but the endocrine function was reduced gradually. Of all dogs, 5 revealed pancreatic sclerosis, and 2 at 9 mo had calculi, 2-4 mm in size, in the small pancreatic duct. SEM examination revealed the intralobular fibrosis and irregularity of the pancreatic duct wall, and TEM examination revealed the intralobular fibrosis and irregularity of the pancreatic duct wall, and TEM examination demonstrated the amorphous or crystalloid substances and secreted granules in the acinar lumen or ductule. In elemental analysis spectra using SEM, a high calcium peak was seen in the pancreatic duct wall. In elemental analysis spectra using TEM, a high calcium peak was observed in the amorphous or crystalloid substances, and a high ratio of Ca/K was seen in these substances. Calcium was also detected in the secreted granules or microvilli. These results suggest that there is a process of calculus formation based on the congregation of the intraductular substances containing a large quantity of calcium.

Abstract
This paper describes a case of a mucin-producing tumor of the pancreas, histologically diagnosed as multifocal intraductal papillary adenocarcinoma. The patient had a markedly dilated main pancreatic duct, detected by ultrasound (US) and computed tomography (CT), and endoscopy showed a papillary tumor projecting from the patulous orifice of the enlarged papilla of Vater. Several biopsies taken from the tumor indicated a diagnosis of papillary adenocarcinoma. Total pancreatectomy was thus performed, revealing a multifocal papillary tumor growing along the main duct in the head, body, and tail of the pancreas. Microscopically, these multiple tumors were found to be mucin-producing papillary adenocarcinoma of the main and subsidiary pancreatic ducts with nodular and microfocal periductal invasion. The surgical treatment of multifocal tumors, may therefore necessitate total pancreatectomy to achieve curative resection, in some cases.

Abstract
This study was undertaken in order to evaluate the effect of intraoperative intraperitoneal (IP) administration of cisplatin (CDDP) and/or mitomycin C (MMC) on patients who underwent an operation for gastric cancer, compared with an untreated group. There were no differences between the effect of CDDP and that of MMC. No differences were found between the survival rate of IP and untreated group in no liver and no peritoneal metastasis cases, nor in non-resection cases. However, the median survival time was longer at 377 days in IP group than at 213 days in the untreated group (p less than 0.1). The free CDDP levels in the serum after 50 mg IP injection remained effective for 15-30 min. On the other hand, the MMC levels in the serum after 20 mg IP proved in effective.

Abstract
Five Syrian hamsters were exposed to a short photoperiod (8L:16D) during 159 days. Atrophied testes were removed, fixed in Allen's solution; paraffin sections of the testicular tissues and whole-mounted seminiferous tubules were prepared. The numbers of various types of spermatogonia were investigated and compared with those in animals maintained in natural photoperiod (12L:12D). All the types of differentiated spermatogonia (A1, A2, In, B1, B2) were significantly decreased in number after the treatment of short photoperiod exposure, while undifferentiated spermatogonia (isolated, paired and aligned type) were significantly increased at stages V-VI and VII-VIII of the seminiferous epithelial cycle. This strictly local reaction of the undifferentiated spermatogonia to the loss of the differentiated spermatogonia suggests the presence of a feedback effect of a certain type(s) of differentiated cells to the undifferentiated spermatogonial proliferation. This feedback mechanism may also play an important role for regulating annual changes in spermatogenesis of seasonal breeders, not only in laboratory but also in natural habitat.
