Occurrence of Salmonella spp. in backyard poultry in Bosnia and Herzegovina

BACKGROUND

Infected poultry is one of the most important reservoirs of Salmonella.

AIMS

The investigation presented here was conducted to examine the occurrence of Salmonella in fecal samples among selected flocks of backyard poultry in Bosnia and Herzegovina (B&H).

METHODS

Isolation and identification of Salmonella was performed in accordance with BAS EN ISO 6579/AMD 1:2007. When genus Salmonella was confirmed, the determination of the antigenic formula of Salmonella isolates was performed in accordance with BAS CEN ISO/TR 6579-3:2015. After that, Salmonella serotypes were subjected to antibiotic susceptibility testing using EUVSEC sensititre microtiter plates impregnated with different concentrations of antibiotics. At the end, real-time PCR was used to detect extended spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL) and carbapeneamase encoding genes (bla _TEM, bla _SHV, bla _CTX-M, bla _CMY, bla _KPC, bla _NDM, bla _OXA-48, bla _VIM and bla _GES).

RESULTS

Salmonella spp. was detected in pooled feces from four backyards, housed by chickens only. Three isolates were confirmed by slide agglutination as serotype Enteritidis and one as serotype Typhimurium. Antibiotic susceptibility testing by microdilution did not reveal phenotypical resistance among these four isolates. Real-time PCR used to detect ESBL and carbapeneamase encoding genes revealed the bla _TEM gene in one S. Enteritidis isolate.

CONCLUSION

Data presented in this study provide further evidence on the circulation of different Salmonella serotypes in backyard poultry in B&H. These findings emphasize the potential role of backyard poultry in the epidemiology of salmonellosis and the risks it poses for keepers, consumers, and general public health.

Correlation between blood lead level and hemoglobin level in mitrovica children

Introduction:

Lead toxicity is a serious health threat, especially in developing countries due to environmental pollution. It was thus aimed to investigate correlation between blood lead level and concentration level of hemoglobin in the blood of children involved in research.

Material and methods:

The research included 250 children of which 31(12.4%) kindergarten children, 166 (66.4%) of primary school pupils in Mitrovica and 53(21.2%) of primary school pupils in Shtime as control group. From the 250 children included in the survey 129 or 51.6% were female children and 48.4% male children. Children were selected randomly, while tests for concentration of Pb and blood hemoglobin were done at the National Institute of Public Health.

Results:

The average value of blood lead level of Mitrovica pupils was 2.4 µg/dL (SD±1.9µg/dL), range 0.5 to 16.3µg/dL. The average value of blood lead level of Shtime pupils was 2.3µg/dL (SD±0.7µg/dL), range 1.2 to 5.2 µg/dL with no statistical difference (P = 0.191). The average value of blood lead level in kindergarten children of Mitrovica was 3.8µg/dL (SD±1.3µg/dL), range 2.2 to 7.7µg/dL with significant difference between the average values of blood lead levels of pupils and kindergarten children of Mitrovica (P <0.0001). The average value of hemoglobin in the pupils of Mitrovica was 14.0g/dL(SD± 3.7g/dL), range 9.4 to 25.6 g/dL. The average value of hemoglobin to pupils of Shtime was 11.4g/dl(SD±0.8 g/dl), range 9.2 to 13.0 g/dl with significant difference between mean values of hemoglobin pupils of Mitrovica and Shtime (U ‘= 6440.0, P <0.0001). With Spearman correlation is found significant correlation of a medium scale (r = -0.305, df = 248, p <0.0001) between blood lead levels and hemoglobin level in the blood.

Erythrocyte D -Aminolevulinic Acid Dehydratase (Ala-D) Activity and Blood Lead Level (Pb-B) of Tortoise (Testudo Hemanni, Gmel.) of Vicinity of Lead and Zinc Smelter “Trepca” in Kosova

In comparison with control animals, a significant negative correlation (r = 0.77 -), between lead level and the activity of daminolevulinic acid dehydratase activity in the blood of land turtle (Testudo hermanni, Gmel.) caught in five different localities from heavy polluted environment of lead and zinc smelter “Trepca” was found. The concentration ratio of lead level in blood between control animals and those from the vicinity of smelter was 10:160 % and ratio of ALA-D activity was 10:18,3 U/LE.

Comparison of embryos and chicks that developed as single individuals in double yolk eggs with those that developed in single yolk eggs

Body weight and muscle characteristics of 18- to 20-d-old broiler strain embryos developing in double yolk eggs (DY) that contained one embryo and one infertile ovum were compared with embryos in single yolk eggs (SY). Similar comparisons were made in the posthatching period. In some DY eggs, the embryos were bathed in a watery yolk-like fluid with no distinct second yolk present (Type 1 embryo). In others, the second yolk was contained within the vitelline membrane and surrounded by a vascularized membrane (Type 2). These embryos were heavier than Type 1 or embryos in SY eggs by 20 d of incubation. Their Pectoralis superficialis were heavier and had significantly more protein and DNA. Chicks that hatched from the DY eggs were heavier than those that hatched from SY eggs and they had heavier P. superficialis through at least 14 d of age. Pectoralis superficialis myofibers of chicks from DY eggs had greater cross-sectional area than those from SY eggs. Myofibers in the Semimembranosus of 7- and 14 d-old chicks from DY eggs tended to be larger than those from SY eggs, but the differences were not significant. There was no difference in apparent myofiber number in the Semimembranosus of the two types of chicks. The difference in BW between the two types of chicks diminished over time, so that by 42 d of age they were virtually identical. In summary, a nutritionally enriched in ovo environment resulted in embryos and chicks with enhanced growth and muscle mass, but the effects of enrichment diminished during posthatching life and eventually disappeared.
