Abstract
The beef industry is organized around different stakeholders, each with their own expectations, sometimes antagonistic. This article first outlines these differing perspectives. Then, various optimization models that might integrate all these expectations are described. The final goal is to define practices that could increase value for animal production, carcasses and meat whilst simultaneously meeting the main expectations of the beef industry. Different models previously developed worldwide are proposed here. Two new computational methodologies that allow the simultaneous selection of the best regression models and the most interesting covariates to predict carcass and/or meat quality are developed. Then, a method of variable clustering is explained that is accurate in evaluating the interrelationships between different parameters of interest. Finally, some principles for the management of quality trade-offs are presented and the Meat Standards Australia model is discussed. The "Pareto front" is an interesting approach to deal jointly with the different sets of expectations and to propose a method that could optimize all expectations together.

Abstract
The vast majority of P300-based brain-computer interface (BCI) systems are based on the well-known P300 speller presented by Farwell and Donchin for communication purposes and an alternative to people with neuromuscular disabilities, such as impaired eye movement. The purpose of the present work is to study the effect of speller size on P300-based BCI usability, measured in terms of effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction under overt and covert attention conditions. To this end, twelve participants used three speller sizes under both attentional conditions to spell 12 symbols. The results indicated that the speller size had, in both attentional conditions, a significant influence on performance. In both conditions (covert and overt), the best performances were obtained with the small and medium speller sizes, both being the most effective. The speller size did not significantly affect workload on the three speller sizes. In contrast, covert attention condition produced very high workload due to the increased resources expended to complete the task. Regarding users' preferences, significant differences were obtained between speller sizes. The small speller size was considered as the most complex, the most stressful, the less comfortable, and the most tiring. The medium speller size was always considered in the medium rank, which is the speller size that was evaluated less frequently and, for each dimension, the worst one. In this sense, the medium and the large speller sizes were considered as the most satisfactory. Finally, the medium speller size was the one to which the three standard dimensions were collected: high effectiveness, high efficiency, and high satisfaction. This work demonstrates that the speller size is an important parameter to consider in improving the usability of P300 BCI for communication purposes. The obtained results showed that using the proposed medium speller size, performance and satisfaction could be improved.

Abstract
The beef cattle industry is facing multiple problems, from the unequal distribution of added value to the poor matching of its product with fast-changing demand. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the interactions between the main variables, evaluating the nutritional and organoleptic properties of meat and cattle performances, including carcass properties, to assess a new method of managing the trade-off between these four performance goals. For this purpose, each variable evaluating the parameters of interest has been statistically modeled and based on data collected on 30 Blonde d'Aquitaine heifers. The variables were obtained after a statistical pre-treatment (clustering of variables) to reduce the redundancy of the 62 initial variables. The sensitivity analysis evaluated the importance of each independent variable in the models, and a graphical approach completed the analysis of the relationships between the variables. Then, the models were used to generate virtual animals and study the relationships between the nutritional and organoleptic quality. No apparent link between the nutritional and organoleptic properties of meat (r = -0.17) was established, indicating that no important trade-off between these two qualities was needed. The 30 best and worst profiles were selected based on nutritional and organoleptic expectations set by a group of experts from the INRA (French National Institute for Agricultural Research) and Institut de l'Elevage (French Livestock Institute). The comparison between the two extreme profiles showed that heavier and fatter carcasses led to low nutritional and organoleptic quality.

Abstract
Most people have left-hemisphere dominance for various aspects of language processing, but only roughly 1% of the adult population has atypically reversed, rightward hemispheric language dominance (RHLD). The genetic-developmental program that underlies leftward language laterality is unknown, as are the causes of atypical variation. We performed an exploratory whole-genome-sequencing study, with the hypothesis that strongly penetrant, rare genetic mutations might sometimes be involved in RHLD. This was by analogy with situs inversus of the visceral organs (left-right mirror reversal of the heart, lungs and so on), which is sometimes due to monogenic mutations. The genomes of 33 subjects with RHLD were sequenced and analyzed with reference to large population-genetic data sets, as well as 34 subjects (14 left-handed) with typical language laterality. The sample was powered to detect rare, highly penetrant, monogenic effects if they would be present in at least 10 of the 33 RHLD cases and no controls, but no individual genes had mutations in more than five RHLD cases while being un-mutated in controls. A hypothesis derived from invertebrate mechanisms of left-right axis formation led to the detection of an increased mutation load, in RHLD subjects, within genes involved with the actin cytoskeleton. The latter finding offers a first, tentative insight into molecular genetic influences on hemispheric language dominance.

Abstract
We herein propose an atlas of 32 sentence-related areas based on a 3-step method combining the analysis of activation and asymmetry during multiple language tasks with hierarchical clustering of resting-state connectivity and graph analyses. 144 healthy right-handers performed fMRI runs based on language production, reading and listening, both with sentences and lists of over-learned words. Sentence minus word-list BOLD contrast and left-minus-right BOLD asymmetry for each task were computed in pairs of homotopic regions of interest (hROIs) from the AICHA atlas. Thirty-two hROIs were identified that were conjointly activated and leftward asymmetrical in each of the three language contrasts. Analysis of resting-state temporal correlations of BOLD variations between these 32 hROIs allowed the segregation of a core network, SENT_CORE including 18 hROIs. Resting-state graph analysis applied to SENT_CORE hROIs revealed that the pars triangularis of the inferior frontal gyrus and the superior temporal sulcus were hubs based on their degree centrality (DC), betweenness, and participation values corresponding to epicentres of sentence processing. Positive correlations between DC and BOLD activation values for SENT_CORE hROIs were observed across individuals and across regions regardless of the task: the more a SENT_CORE area is connected at rest the stronger it is activated during sentence processing. DC measurements in SENT_CORE may thus be a valuable index for the evaluation of inter-individual variations in language areas functional activity in relation to anatomical or clinical patterns in large populations. We considera regression model in which the variable of interest is censored. We present various nonparametric estimators of the conditional distribution function and of conditional quantiles. In a simulation study, we compare the performance of these estimators. Moreover, the local linear estimator of conditional quantile is applied on a dataset dealing with the effect of age on survival time of kidney transplant patients.

Abstract
Microarrays are part of a new class of biotechnologies, which allow the monitoring of expression levels of thousands of genes simultaneously. In microarray data analysis, the comparison of gene expression profiles with respect to different conditions and the selection of biologically interesting genes are crucial tasks. Multivariate statistical methods have been applied to analyze these large data sets. To identify genes with altered expression under two experimental conditions, we propose a nonparametric statistical approach. Specifically, we propose estimating the distributions of a t-type statistic and its null statistic, using kernel methods. A comparison of these two distributions by means of a likelihood ratio test can identify genes with significantly changed expressions. A new method to provide more stable estimates of tail probabilities is proposed, as well as a method for the calculation of the cut-off point and the acceptance region. The methodology is applied to a leukaemia data set containing expression levels of 7129 genes, and is compared with normal mixture model and the traditional t-test.

Abstract
Reference curves which take time into account, such as those for age, are often required in medicine, but simple systematic and efficient statistical methods for constructing them are lacking. Classical methods are based on parametric fitting (polynomial curves). Semi-parametric methods are also widely used especially in Europe. Here, we propose a new methodology for the estimation of reference intervals for data sets, based on non-parametric estimation of conditional quantiles. The derived methods should be applicable to all clinical (or more generally biological) variables that are measured on a continuous quantitative scale. As an example, we analyse a data set collected to establish reference curves for biophysical properties of the skin of healthy French women. The results are compared to those obtained with Royston's polynomial parametric method and the semi-parametric LMS approach.

Abstract
PURPOSE To describe significant positive or negative psychotropic effects of lamotrigine (LTG) observed in epilepsy patients with mental retardation (MR). METHODS Seven mentally retarded epilepsy patients, [5 with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS)] who experienced significant behavioral improvements or worsening after addition of LTG to their medication regimen were studied. RESULTS LTG produced behavioral improvements in 4 patients. Patient 1, a 14-year-old girl, had LTG added to valproate (VPA) and thioridazine, resulting in diminished lethargy, less hyperactivity, and more appropriate speech. In a 17-year-old boy (patient 2) LTG added to VPA, phenytoin (PHT), and gabapentin (GBP) lessened irritability and hyperactivity. In patient 3, a 41-year-old woman, LTG added to PHT, VPA, and carbamazepine (CBZ) diminished lethargy and enhanced her social interactions. In patient 4, a 27-year-old man, LTG monotherapy diminished irritability and hyperactivity. Adverse behavioral effects were noted in 3 patients. In patient 5, a 43-year-old man, LTG added to PHT, phenobarbital (PB), lorazepam, sertraline, and thioridazine produced irritability, hyperactivity, and poor cooperation. In patient 6, a 29-year-old woman, LTG added to VPA produced frequent screaming, temper tantrums, increased rocking movements, and hyperactivity. In patient 7, a 29-year-old man, LTG added to VPA and PHT resulted in severe exacerbation of baseline behaviors, including self-injurious activity, temper tantrums, and failure to obey simple instructions. CONCLUSIONS In some patients with epilepsy and MR, LTG has significant positive or negative effects on behavior.
