Abstract
Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients treated with high-dose cisplatin concurrently with radiotherapy (hdCis-RT) commonly suffer kidney injury leading to acute and chronic kidney disease (AKD and CKD, respectively). We conducted a retrospective analysis of renal function and kidney injury-related plasma biomarkers in a subset of HNSCC subjects receiving hdCis-RT in a double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trial (NCT02508389) evaluating the superoxide dismutase mimetic, avasopasem manganese (AVA), an investigational new drug. We found that 90 mg AVA treatment prevented a significant reduction in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) three months as well as six and twelve months after treatment compared to 30 mg AVA and placebo. Moreover, AVA treatment may have allowed renal repair in the first 22 days following cisplatin treatment as evidenced by an increase in epithelial growth factor (EGF), known to aid in renal recovery. An upward trend was also observed in plasma iron homeostasis proteins including total iron (Fe-blood) and iron saturation (Fe-saturation) in the 90 mg AVA group versus placebo. These data support the hypothesis that treatment with 90 mg AVA mitigates cisplatin-induced CKD by inhibiting hdCis-induced renal changes and promoting renal recovery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the relationship between maternal corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) levels in second trimester sera, and the risk of preterm delivery in an ethnically heterogeneous sample of pregnant women. METHODS This nested case-control study included two case groups (97 women who delivered before 35 weeks' gestation, 144 who delivered at 35--36 weeks' gestation), and a control group (244 women who delivered at or after 37 weeks' gestation) frequency matched by ethnicity (black, white) and by alpha-fetoprotein levels (normal, unexplained high). Corticotropin-releasing hormone was evaluated in stored maternal sera collected at 15--19 weeks' gestation from cases and controls. RESULTS Delivery before 35 weeks' gestation was associated positively with a second trimester, ethnic-specific CRH above 1.5 multiples of the median in white women [odds ratio (OR) 2.3, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.1, 5.1] and black women (OR 5.0, 95% CI 1.8, 13.3). Sensitivity was 29% in whites and 41% in blacks; specificity was 84% in whites and 80% in blacks. We estimated the positive and negative predictive values to be 6% and 97%, respectively, in white women, and 16% and 93%, respectively, in black women. It was also noted that, within case and control groups, black women had consistently lower CRH levels than white women. CONCLUSION Factors that lead to a premature increase in placental CRH production and are associated with an increased risk of preterm birth are evident as early as 15--19 weeks' pregnancy. When considering potential links between stressors, placental changes, CRH levels, and preterm birth, it might be important to stratify or adjust for ethnicity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To estimate the relative risk of sleep problems associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), its pharmacotherapy, and its comorbid psychopathology. METHOD Standard sleep questionnaires were used to assess sleep problems and characteristics in ADHD (n = 122) and non-ADHD (n = 105) comparison youths. RESULTS ADHD was associated with 10 of 19 sleep problems assessed. However, after controlling for psychiatric comorbidity and pharmacotherapy with stimulants, the majority of these differences were no longer evident. Rather, treatment with stimulants and comorbidity with anxiety and behavior disorders were significantly associated with sleep disturbances. Positive family history of ADHD was associated with none of the sleep problems assessed here after adjusting for age, psychiatric comorbidity, and treatment with anti-ADHD medication. CONCLUSIONS Although subjective sleep difficulties are common in ADHD youths, they are frequently accounted for by comorbidity and pharmacotherapy. Furthermore, the lack of an association between a positive family history of ADHD and sleep difficulties suggests that ADHD is not a misdiagnosis of the consequences of disruption of normal sleep.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Because attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is relatively infrequent among girls, little is known about the causes of ADHD in girls. To help fill this gap in the literature, the authors assessed the familial transmission of ADHD in families ascertained through girls. METHOD Interviewers who were blind to diagnosis administered structured psychiatric interviews to 140 girls with ADHD and their 417 first-degree relatives and to 122 girls without ADHD and their 369 first-degree relatives. RESULTS The relatives of the ADHD girls had a significantly higher prevalence of ADHD, according to either the DSM-III-R or DSM-IV definition, than the relatives of the comparison girls. However, this did not differ from the prevalence the authors reported previously for families of boys with ADHD. Like the boys' families, the relatives of the girl probands also had significantly higher prevalences of antisocial, mood, anxiety, and substance use disorders, although the prevalence of familial antisocial disorders was lower than had been observed in the boys' families. There was no association between the DSM-IV subtypes of the probands and relatives. CONCLUSIONS The familial transmission of ADHD and comorbid disorders generalizes to families of girls with ADHD. Neither proband gender nor subtype influences the familial transmission of ADHD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The scientific literature about attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is based almost exclusively on male subjects, and girls with ADHD may be underidentified and undertreated. The aim of this study was to examine clinical correlates of ADHD in females using comprehensive assessments in multiple domains of functioning. METHOD Subjects were 140 girls with ADHD and 122 comparison girls without ADHD ascertained from pediatric and psychiatric referral sources of the same age and social class. Subjects were assessed with structured diagnostic interviews, psychometric tests assessing intellectual functioning and academic achievement, as well as standardized assessments of interpersonal, school, and family functioning by raters who were blind to clinical diagnosis. RESULTS Compared with female controls, girls with ADHD were more likely to have conduct, mood, and anxiety disorders; lower IQ and achievement scores; and more impairment on measures of social, school, and family functioning. CONCLUSIONS These results extend to girls previous findings in boys indicating that ADHD is characterized by prototypical core symptoms of the disorder, high levels of comorbid psychopathology, and dysfunction in multiple domains. These results not only support findings documenting phenotypic similarities between the genders but also stress the severity of the disorder in females.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We tested the hypothesis that administration of magnesium sulfate in labor protects against the development of neonatal brain lesions and cerebral palsy (CP) in low birth weight infants. METHODS Magnesium exposure was ascertained in a population-based cohort of 1105 infants weighing 2000 g or less through review of medical records of maternal magnesium sulfate administration and, where available, elevated maternal serum magnesium levels. Neonatal germinal matrix/intraventricular hemorrhage and parenchymal brain lesions were ascertained by a prospective, timed ultrasound scanning protocol in the first week of life. CP was ascertained at 2 years of age by clinical examination in 80% of survivors and by interview and medical record review in another 6% and was classified as disabling or nondisabling. RESULTS No significant reduction in risk of nondisabling CP (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 1.00; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.53 to 1.88) or disabling CP [DCP] (adjusted OR, 0.63; 95% CI, 0.32 to 1.24) CP with magnesium exposure was found in a logistic regression model that controlled for gestational age, fetal growth, gender, multiple birth status, mode of delivery, amnionitis, and hypertensive disorders. In a small subset of infants, those with onset of parenchymal lesions at 7 days of age or later (n = 29), magnesium exposure was associated with a significantly reduced risk of DCP (OR, 0.10; 95% CI, 0.02 to 0.65). Magnesium sulfate exposure was not associated with germinal matrix/intraventricular hemorrhage (adjusted OR, 0.89; 95% CI, 0.64 to 1.25) or with parenchymal brain lesions (adjusted OR, 0.83; 95% CI, 0.53 to 1.30). CONCLUSIONS The hypothesis that magnesium sulfate use reduces the risk of neonatal brain lesions or CP in low birth weight infants was not statistically supported in this study, although a modest reduction in risk of DCP cannot be excluded. The data further suggest that magnesium exposure may be associated with reduction in risk of CP in low birth weight infants who have late-onset brain lesions, but this unpredicted observation requires confirmation in another data set.
