Abstract
OBJECTIVES Neighborhood walkability has been found to be positively related to physical activity and negatively associated with risks of noncommunicable diseases. However, limited studies have examined its association with sarcopenia in older adults. Thus, this study aimed to examine the association between neighborhood walk score and risks of sarcopenia in a sample of older Taiwanese adults. DESIGN AND SETTING This study was a cross-sectional investigation using telephone-based survey. PARTICIPANTS A nationwide telephone-based survey targeting older adults (≥ 65 years) was conducted in Taiwan. MEASUREMENTS Data on neighborhood walkability (determined by walk score of residential neighborhood), sarcopenia scores (measured by SARC-F), and personal characteristics were obtained. The relationships between walk score and risks of sarcopenia were examined using generalized additive models. RESULTS A total of 1,056 older adults participated in the survey. In model 1 (sex and age) and model 2 (full-adjusted model), a nonlinear association between neighborhood walk score and risks of sarcopenia was observed. Results showed that risks of sarcopenia appear to be lower in neighborhoods with a 40-walk score (Car-Dependent; most errands require a car) and an 80-walk score (Very Walkable) and highest in the neighborhood with a 60-walk score (Somewhat Walkable). CONCLUSIONS The study revealed a nonlinear relationship between neighborhood walkability and risks of sarcopenia in older adults in Asian context. Results provided information to urban designers and public health practitioners that more walkable neighborhood may not necessarily protect older adults from risks of sarcopenia.

Abstract
Information on the optimal conditions to promote the germination of Lamprocapnos spectabilis (L.) Fukuhara seeds is limited; consequently, this study was conducted to establish the requirements to break seed dormancy and promote germination. The selected seeds had morphophysiological dormancy and had not begun embryo development. To study the dormancy breaking and embryo development processes, seeds were subjected to constant or changing temperature treatments during moist stratification. High temperature and humidity resulted in vigorous embryo growth, with the longest embryos occurring after 1 month of incubation at 20 °C. At 4 °C, the seeds required incubation period of at least 3 months to germinate. Embryo growth and germination were higher with changing high and low temperatures than under a constant temperature, and changing temperatures also considerably changed the endogenous hormone levels, embryo development and germination. Bioactive gibberellin (GA) content was higher in seeds incubated at 20 °C for 1 month, then at 4 °C for 2 months. The content of endogenous abscisic acid in seeds subjected to the same treatment decreased by 97.6% compared with that of the untreated seeds. Embryo growth and seed germination require changing high and low temperatures; however, exogenous GA3 could substitute for high temperatures, as it also causes accelerated germination. In this study, the seeds of L. spectabilis were identified as an intermediate simple type, a sub-level of morphophysiologically dormant seeds.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Previous studies revealed that interventricular septal thickness is related to right ventricular dysfunction after anterior myocardial infarction. This finding suggest that interventricular septal function can affect right ventricular function in myocardial infarction patients. We assumed that right ventricular free wall strain values measured using dedicated software can be affected in the setting of ischemic insult on interventricular septum in long-term follow up.
Methods
The patients diagnosed as acute myocardial infarction due to left anterior descending artery disease who underwent successful revascularization were enrolled. Echocardiographic exams were performed at least 2 times, within 72 hours and 1 year after the revascularization. Strain values of interventricular septum and right ventricular free wall were derived from the raw-dicom images. The analysis was performed using the dedicated software for the measurement of right ventricular strain.
Results
Total 65 patients were enrolled. The values of global left ventricular strain were increased after the follow up. There were no changes in global longitudinal strain of the right ventricle. But longitudinal stain values acquired from right ventricular free walls were decreased even the strain values measured at left ventricle and interventricular septum were improved.
Conclusion
Interventricular septal dysfunction due to ischemic injury can affect long term right ventricular dysfunction. This finding suggests the interventricular dependence between cardiac chambers and can provide the development of heart failure in myocardial infarction patient even after the successful revascularization.

Abstract
This study was conducted to establish the optimal application conditions of barley straw biochar (BC) for rice cultivation and to determine the effects of combined application of BC and inorganic fertilizer (IF) on rice cultivation in a paddy field. Based on the characteristics of rice growth in pot-based experiments, the selected optimal application conditions of BC were application of 20 ton ha-1 at 14 days before rice transplanting. The effects of BC application on rice cultivation in a paddy field when using those conditions were then evaluated. Each treatment was separated by a control (Cn), IF, BC, and combined BC + IF treatments, respectively. The rice yields in the BC + IF treatment were 38.6, 21.7, and 24.5% greater than those in the Cn, IF, and BC treatments, respectively. In addition, yield components of rice were significantly improved in the BC + IF treatment relative to the other treatments. Following rice harvest, soil status was improved, showing greater soil aggregation stability, decreased bulk density, and increased porosity in the BC-treated areas compared to those in the Cn- and IF-treated areas. At the time of rice harvesting, soil chemical properties such as pH, EC, SOC, TN, Avail. P2O5, and CEC in the BC-treated areas were improved over those in other areas. The results of this study indicate that using BC as a soil amendment is effective at improving rice cultivation and can benefit the soil environment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES There is a great deal of interest in the possibility that environmental factors may influence the risk of developing allergic rhinitis (AR) in early life. We investigated the simultaneous effects of mode of delivery and duration of breastfeeding on the development of AR in children. METHODS Data from 1,374 children participating in the Allergic Rhinitis Cohort Study for kids (ARCO-kids study) was analyzed. All subjects were divided into AR or non-allergic rhinitis (NAR) groups. Data on environmental factors, mode of delivery and duration of breastfeeding were collected using a questionnaire. RESULTS Compared with short-term breastfeeding (<6 months), long-term breastfeeding (≥12 months) was significantly associated with a lower prevalence of AR (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 0.54; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.34 to 0.88). Children in the AR group also had a higher cesarean delivery rate than those in the NAR group (39.1% vs. 32.8%, P=0.05). Regarding the combined effects of mode of delivery and duration of breastfeeding, long-term breastfeeding with a vaginal delivery strongly suppressed the development of AR, compared to short-term breastfeeding with a cesarean delivery (aOR, 0.47; 95% CI, 0.30 to 0.73). CONCLUSION Long-term breastfeeding (≥12 months) and a vaginal delivery are associated with a lower risk of developing childhood AR.

Abstract
The phosphorus (P) adsorption characteristic of sesame straw biochar prepared with different activation agents and pyrolysis temperatures was evaluated. Between 0.109 and 0.300 mg L(-1) in the form of inorganic phosphate was released from raw sesame straw biochar in the first 1 h. The release of phosphate was significantly enhanced from 62.6 to 168.2 mg g(-1) as the pyrolysis temperature increased. Therefore, sesame straw biochar cannot be used as an adsorbent for P removal without change in the physicochemical characteristics. To increase the P adsorption of biochar in aqueous solution, various activation agents and pyrolysis temperatures were applied. The amount of P adsorbed from aqueous solution by biochar activated using different activation agents appeared in the order ZnCl2 (9.675 mg g(-1)) > MgO (8.669 mg g(-1)) ⋙ 0.1N-HCl > 0.1N-H2SO4 > K2SO4 ≥ KOH ≥ 0.1N-H3PO4, showing ZnCl2 to be the optimum activation agent. Higher P was adsorbed by the biochar activated using ZnCl2 under different pyrolysis temperatures in the order 600 °C > 500 °C > 400 °C > 300 °C. Finally, the amount of adsorbed P by activated biochar at different ratios of biochar to ZnCl2 appeared in the order 1:3 ≒ 1:1 > 3:1. As a result, the optimum ratio of biochar to ZnCl2 and pyrolysis temperature were found to be 1:1 and 600 °C for P adsorption, respectively. The maximum P adsorption capacity by activated biochar using ZnCl2 (15,460 mg kg(-1)) was higher than that of typical biochar, as determined by the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Therefore, the ZnCl2 activation of sesame straw biochar was suitable for the preparation of activated biochar for P adsorption.

Abstract
Spray-drying and the nanoscale Kirkendall diffusion process are used to prepare nickel sulfide hollow nanospheres/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composite powders with excellent Na-ion storage properties. Metallic Ni nanopowder-decorated rGO powders, formed as intermediate products, are transformed into composite powders of nickel sulfide hollow nanospheres/rGO with mixed crystal structures of Ni3S2 and Ni9S8 phases by the sulfidation process under H2S gas. Nickel sulfide/rGO composite powders with the main crystal structure of Ni3S2 are also prepared as comparison samples by the direct sulfidation of nickel acetate-graphene oxide (GO) composite powders obtained by spray-drying. In electrochemical properties, the discharge capacities at the 150(th) cycle of the nickel sulfide/rGO composite powders prepared by sulfidation of the Ni/rGO composite and nickel acetate/GO composite powders at a current density of 0.3 A g(-1) are 449 and 363 mA h g(-1), respectively; their capacity retentions, calculated from the tenth cycle, are 100 and 87%. The nickel sulfide hollow nanospheres/rGO composite powders possess structural stability over repeated Na-ion insertion and extraction processes, and also show excellent rate performance for Na-ion storage.

Abstract
Purpose Allergen-specific immunotherapy is the only currently available treatment to modify the natural history of allergic rhinitis (AR). If patients are polysensitized, it is difficult to identify the allergen causing the allergic symptoms. We evaluated the effectiveness of immunotherapy against house dust mites (HDMs) in AR patients polysensitized to both HDMs and seasonal allergens. Methods Thirty AR patients polysensitized to both HDMs and seasonal allergens (group A) and 30 patients sensitized to HDMs only (group B) were enrolled in this study. All subjects who received immunotherapy against HDMs for more than 2 years were evaluated by the multiple allergen simultaneous test (MAST) to determine the specific IgE level in luminescence units, total eosinophil counts in peripheral blood, serum total IgE, total nasal symptom scores, and the rhinoconjunctivitis quality of life questionnaire (RQLQ) before and after immunotherapy. Results There were no statistical differences in levels of total and specific IgE, or total eosinophil count between the two groups. The total nasal symptom scores, RQLQ and medication scores significantly decreased after immunotherapy in both groups, however no significant differences were noted between the two groups. Conclusions We determined that the primary causative allergen of AR in Seoul, Korea is perennial allergens, such as HDMs, rather than seasonal allergens. This study provides a reference for the selection of allergens to use in immunotherapy for polysensitized AR patients living in an urban environment.

Abstract
Abstract
Background: Metastasis-associated in colon cancer 1 (MACC1) plays a role in cancer invasion and metastasis through the upregulation of hepatocyte growth factor/mesenchymal epithelial transition-pathway, which is a known critical regulator of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascades. However, the potential involvement of MACC1 in breast cancer has not been assessed.
Materials and Methods: To investigate whether MACC1 expression is a prognostic marker in breast cancer, we performed immunohistochemical staining for MACC1 expression in tissue microarrays consisting of 198 invasive breast carcinomas. To demonstrate the potential correlation between MACC1 and MAPK cascades, phospho-p44/42 MAPK (ERK1/2) expression was also analyzed.
Results: Expression of MACC1 was detected in 109 (55.1%) of 198 invasive breast carcinomas. MACC1 expression was significantly associated with several clinicopathologic parameters, including ER negativity (P < 0.01), PR negativity (p < 0.01), and HER-2 positivity (p < 0.01). The rate of metastatic relapse was significantly higher in the MACC1-positive group (87.8%, 36/41) than in the MACC1-negative group (46.5%, 73/157) (p < 0.001). MACC1 expression was significantly correlated with phospho-p44/42 MAPK expression (p < 0.05). On univariate survival analysis, a significant association was observed between MACC1 expression and decreased disease-free survival (p < 0.001) and overall survival (p = 0.001). On multivariate analysis, MACC1 expression was one of the statistically significant independent risk factors for disease-free survival (p = 0.001).
Conclusion: Our results suggest that MACC1 may serve as a new parameter for the prognostic prediction in patients with invasive breast carcinoma. MACC1 is likely to be involved in the regulation of MAPK cascades in invasive breast carcinoma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is reported as the most influential factor that triggers hyperreactivity of the airway and causes asthma in infants and children. However, the mechanisms remain to be elucidated. The study evaluated the changes in the levels of four types of histamine receptor (HR) and CC chemokines, such as eotaxin and regulated on activation, normal T cell expressed and presumably secreted (RANTES), in nasal epithelial cells and fibroblasts after RSV infection. METHODS Nasal cavity mucosa attained from 20 patients who had undergone inferior turbinoplasty were cleaned by normal saline mixed with gentamicin. Each sample was divided in half. One-half was used for incubation of epithelial cells, and the other half was used for culturing fibroblasts. The levels of HR 1 (H1R), 2 (H2R), 3 (H3R), 4 (H4R), eotaxin, and RANTES were measured by real-time polymerase chain reaction 0, 12, and 36 hours after infection with RSV. RESULTS H1R was significantly increased at 12 and 36 hours compared with 0 hours in both cell types. The level of H2R was significantly increased in epithelial cells from 0 to 36 and 12 to 36 hours and in fibroblasts from 0 to 12 and 0 to 36 hours. There were significant increases of H3R level in fibroblasts from 0 to 12 and 0 to 36 hours, and of H4R in epithelial cells and fibroblasts from 0 to 12 and 0 to 36 hours. Eotaxin and RANTES were also significantly increased in both epithelial cells and fibroblasts from 0 to 12 and 0 to 36 hours. CONCLUSION RSV infection increases the levels of all four HRs, especially H1R and H2R, as well as the levels of eotaxin and RANTES in nasal epithelial cells and fibroblasts. These findings suggest that RSV infection might cause respiratory tract hyperreactivity by increasing the content of HRs and CC chemokines.

Abstract
Objective: Depending on the inflammatory cell infiltration, nasal polyps can be categorized as eosinophilic type or non-eosinophilic type. There is a geographical difference in the prevalence of a certain pathological type of polyp. More than 80% of polyps in Western people are the eosinophilic type, while this type is rarely found among Eastern people. The periodical change in the prevalence of histological types of polyps was evaluated in this study. Method: Two hundred total patients, each confirmed to the polyp biopsy, were enrolled between 1993 and 2010. Specimens were fixed in formalin, then made to a paraffin block and H&E stained slide, which was reviewed by 2 authors. The number of eosinophils per high power field (HPF) and other cellular, epithelial, and stromal markers were reviewed. Results: We compared the nasal polyp eosinophil count by periods, the average eosinophil count/HPF increased from 7.22 (±1.695) in 1993 to 20.44 (±3.635) in 2010 ( P = .001). Eosinophilic polyp (showing over 5 eosinophils/HPF) increased significantly from 26% in 1993 to 52% in ( P = .000 -> P < .001). Among other histologic markers, lymphocytes, basement membrane thickening, and gland hypertrophy showed significant difference. Conclusion: After comparative studies between histopathologic findings of nasal polyps from 1993 and 2010 respectively, the percentage of eosinophilic nasal polyp, known to be rare among Asians, including Koreans, have increased significantly.

Abstract
The effects of stressful events, such as surgery, on patients with allergic diseases are unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) are more susceptible to stress and oxidative stress than non-allergic individuals. 20 AR patients and 20 non-allergic rhinitis (NAR) patients were recruited to this study and underwent nasal septoplasty. To evaluate the degrees of stress and oxidative stress, we collected urine and blood samples 1 day before and 1 day after surgery. Stress was assessed by measuring urine cortisol levels. Oxidative stress was assessed by calculating the balance of reactive oxygen metabolites (ROM) measured by the diacron reactive oxygen metabolites test, and antioxidant capacity (AC) was measured by the biological antioxidant potential test. In both groups, the level of post-operative urine cortisol was significantly higher than the pre-operative level, with no significant difference between the two groups. ROM levels were significantly higher in both groups after surgery than before surgery. The antioxidant capacity of the AR group was lower after surgery than before surgery, while it was greater in the NAR group after surgery. There were no significant differences in pre- or post-operative ROM or AC levels between the two groups. The ROM/AC ratio was significantly higher after surgery in the AR group than it was in the NAR group. The post-operative ROM/AC imbalance of AR patients suggests that these patients might be vulnerable to stress, especially oxidative stress.

Abstract
CONCLUSION This study shows the possibility that multilevel surgery for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is helpful to improve the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and adipokines, which are related to complications of OSA. OBJECTIVES The effects of multilevel surgery on adipokines and pro-inflammatory cytokines in patients with OSA were assessed. METHODS Fifty-one patients with OSA underwent uvulopalatopharyngoplasty and radiofrequency tongue base reduction. Body mass index (BMI), Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS) and subjective symptoms using visual analog scales were assessed at baseline and 4 weeks after treatment. Adiponectin, leptin, interleukin (IL)-6, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α were measured with a LINCOplex Human Immunoassay at baseline and 4 weeks after surgical treatment. RESULTS Significant improvements in subjective symptoms and ESS were found at 4 weeks after multilevel surgery. No significant change in BMI was observed. Adiponectin level was significantly increased after surgical treatment. Postoperative leptin, IL-6, and TNF-α levels were significantly decreased. The percent changes of adiponectin, leptin, IL-6, and TNF-α after multilevel surgery were not significantly different among patients with mild, moderate, and severe OSA.

Abstract
The abnormal phosphorylations of tau, GSK3beta, and beta-catenin have been shown to perform a crucial function in the neuropathology of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The primary objective of the current study was to determine the manner in which overexpressed htau23 interacts and regulates the behavior and phosphorylation characteristics of tau, GSK3beta, and beta-catenin. In order to accomplish this, transgenic mice expressing neuron-specific enolase (NSE)-controlled human wild-type tau (NSE/htau23) were created. Transgenic mice evidenced the following: (i) tendency toward memory impairments at later stages, (ii) dramatic overexpression of the tau transgene, coupled with increased tau phosphorylation and paired helical filaments (PHFs), (iii) high levels of GSK3beta phosphorylation with advanced age, resulting in increases in the phosphorylations of tau and beta-catenin, (iv) an inhibitory effect of lithium on the phosphorylations of tau, GSK3beta, and beta-catenin, but not in the non-transgenic littermate group. Therefore, the overexpression of NSE/htau23 in the brains of transgenic mice induces abnormal phosphorylations of tau, GSK3beta, and beta-catenin, which are ultimately linked to neuronal degeneration in cases of AD. These transgenic mice are expected to prove useful for the development of new drugs for the treatment of AD.

Abstract
A human androgen response element (hARE), identified within intron 8 of the human sterol regulatory element-binding protein cleavage-activating protein, interacts with both glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and androgen receptors (AR). The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that human GR (hGR) might modulate the expression of a hARE-linked reporter gene by dexamethasone (Dex). The hypothesis was tested by: a) co-transfecting HepG2 cells with a hGR and a luciferase (Luc)-reporter gene for performing in vitro investigations and b) by their co-injection into the tail vein of mice for in vivo investigation. In vitro co-transfected cells and the in vivo co-injected mice were then treated with Dex. Our results have led us to concluded that both transfection and injection of the hGR leads to a repression in the Dex-mediated induction of hARE-linked Luc activity both in vitro and in vivo settings. These findings suggest that this assay system allows screening of drug candidates affecting to a signal transduction pathway of the GR and AR and may help in the future discovery and analysis of novel and selection of GR and AR agonists.

Abstract
To treat cutting oil wastewater produced in metal surface treatment industry, Ultrasonication (US)-Fenton process, which is one of the advanced oxidation processes, was used. The optimum conditions to treat non-biodegradable pollutants using the US-Fenton process were that the application rates of H2O2 and FeSO4 were 10% and 3 g/L, respectively, the value of pH was 3, and the ultrasonication time was 30 min. It identified non-degradable pollutants such as ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) and Triethanolamine (TEA) in the cutting oil wastewater. TLC analysis of two compounds of treated water by the coagulation process was similar to that of raw water. However, TLC analysis of two compounds of US-Fenton process was different from that of raw water, meaning that US-Fenton process decomposed the EDTA and TEA. To study the possibility of application with the US-Fenton process to pilot plant, the pollutants treatment efficiency of three different methods, such as US-Fenton process, activated sludge process and coagulation process, in continuous experiments were compared. The removal rate of pollutants by the US-Fenton process according to the effluent time was higher than any other processes. The removal rates of COD, SS, T-N and T-P by US-Fenton process were 98, 93, 75 and 95%, respectively.

Abstract
A heavy metal resistant bacterium Bacillus spp. strain CPB4 was isolated from heavy metal contaminated soil in Korea and further characterised. The CPB4 strain showed a high capacity for uptake of heavy metal Pb (Pb > Cd > Cu > Ni > Co > Mn > Cr > Zn) both in single and in mixed heavy metal solution. Optimal conditions for heavy metal uptakes of CPB4 strain were 20-40 degrees C culture temperature, 5-7 pH and 24 h pre-culture times. TEM showed that large amounts of the electron-dense granules (heavy metal complexes) were found mainly on the cell wall and cell membrane. Furthermore, more than 90% of adsorbed heavy metals were distributed both in cell wall and in cell membrane fractions. The amount of heavy metal uptake was remarkably decreased by reducing the crude protein contents when cells were treated by alkali solutions. Therefore, this study showed one of the possible examples for useful bioremediation.

Abstract
We investigated the characteristic features of cervical lymph node B cells to determine whether their behavior differs from that of B cells located elsewhere, because cervical lymph nodes may be exposed to continual antigenic stimulation from the naso- and/or oropharynx. B cells were isolated from cervical lymph nodes, spleen and peritoneal fluid of mice, cultured in medium, and exposed to various stimuli. The expression of various surface molecules characteristic of lymphoid B cells was assayed by flow cytometry, and immunoglobulin secreted into the culture supernatants was evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. B220+ cells were cultured in medium alone or with lipopolysaccharide, and their entrance into S phase in response to stimuli was measured by proliferative assays. Phenotypic characteristics of cervical lymph node B cells included CD5 low, CD23high, CD43low, B7.1low, B7.2low, and Syndecan-1low. Unstimulated lymphoid B cells did not secrete immunoglobulin, but, upon stimulation, secretion of IgM was increased more than secretion of IgA and IgG. B cells actively entered S phase after 48 hr stimulation. These results show that B cells in cervical lymph nodes are conventional B2 cells, like splenic B cells.

Abstract
Time spectra of neutron and sonoluminescence emissions were measured in cavitation experiments with chilled deuterated acetone. Statistically significant neutron and gamma ray emissions were measured with a calibrated liquid-scintillation detector, and sonoluminescence emissions were measured with a photomultiplier tube. The neutron and sonoluminescence emissions were found to be time correlated over the time of significant bubble cluster dynamics. The neutron emission energy was less than 2.5 MeV and the neutron emission rate was up to approximately 4 x 10(5) n/s. Measurements of tritium production were also performed and these data implied a neutron emission rate due to D-D fusion which agreed with what was measured. In contrast, control experiments using normal acetone did not result in statistically significant tritium activity, or neutron or gamma ray emissions.

Abstract
In this paper, we present the first measurement of radon concentrations in drinking groundwater from private and public deep-bored wells located in the south-eastern area of Korea. The measurements were carried out on 439 samples by using a liquid scintillation method. The results show that the radon concentrations of the samples range from 0 to about 300 Bq l(-1). We find that Sasang ward shows the highest median value of radon concentration among 13 different wards, while Jung ward has the lowest. We find that the radon concentrations are highly dependent on the type of geological rock aquifers.

Abstract
AIMS The aims of this study were to investigate whether endogenous steroid hormones are (1) related to pathogenesis of stress urinary incontinence after menopause, (2) are related to severity of stress urinary incontinence, and (3) are related to prognostic parameters of stress urinary incontinence. METHODS Twenty post-partum women with clinically diagnosed stress urinary incontinence and 20 age-matched postmenopausal women without stress urinary incontinence (control group) were evaluated. We compared urinary profile of the endogenous steroid hormones patients with stress urinary incontinence and controls, and between grade I and grade II of stress urinary incontinence. We also investigated the relationship between urinary profile of the endogenous steroid hormones and prognostic parameters of stress urinary incontinence (maximal urethral closure pressure, functional urethral length, Valsalva leak point pressure, cough leak point pressure, posterior urethrovesical angle, bladder neck descent, and stress urethral axis). The ages of the patients and those in the control group were 64.3 +/- 5.6 and 57.5 +/- 3.8 years old and the body mass indexes were 24.96 +/- 3.14 and 22.11 +/- 2.73 kg/m2 in patients and in normal subjects, respectively. Nine patients were grade I and 11 were grade II. Estrone and 17beta-estradiol only were detected in all subjects, regardless of control or patient group. It is noteworthy that there were no significant differences (P > 0.05) in the levels of estrone and 17beta-estradiol in the urine of postmenopausal normal subjects compared with in the urine of postmenopausal patients with urinary incontinence. E2/E1 ratio was not different between the two groups (P > 0.05). Among the objective steroids, DHEA, Delta4-dione, Delta5-diol, Te, DHT, 16alpha-DHT, 11-keto An, THDOC, and THB were not detected either in the urine of normal subjects and nor in the urine of the patients. After comparing androgen levels between normal subjects and patients, no significant differences (P>0.05) were detected, except for 5alpha-THB and 5alpha-THF. Neither 5alpha-THB or 5alpha-THF were detected in the patients' urine. Et/An (11beta-OH Et/11beta-OH An) concentration ratios were not significantly different between the two groups, either (P > 0.05). There were not significant differences of concentrations (micromol/g creatinine) of urinary steroids between grade I and grade II of stress urinary incontinence. Pregnanediol was significantly related to bladder neck descent in supine and sitting positions (R = 0.79, P = 0.01, and R = 0.73, P = 0.03, respectively), and pregnanetriol was significantly related to maximal urethral closure pressure and functional urethral length (R = 0.68, P = 0.04, and R = -0.79, P = 0.01, respectively). Androsterone was significantly related to bladder neck descent in supine and sitting positions (R = 0.68, P = 0.04, and R = 0.78, P = 0.01, respectively). 5-AT was significantly related to bladder neck descent in sitting position and stress urethral axis (R = 0.72, P = 0.03, and R = -0.71, P = 0.03). 11-keto Et was significantly related to bladder neck descent in supine and sitting positions and related to stress urethral axis (R = 0.82, P = 0.01, and R = 0.81, P = 0.01, R = -0.67, P = 0.04, respectively). THS was significantly related to bladder neck descent in supine and sitting positions and related to stress urethral axis (R = 0.76, P = 0.02, and R = 0.74, P = 0.02, R = -0.68, P = 0.04, respectively). THE was significantly related to bladder neck descent in sitting position (R = 0.67, P = 0.04).beta-Tetrahydrocortisol/alpha-tetrahydrocortisol (beta-THF/alpha-THF) and alpha-cortol were significantly related to maximal urethral closure pressure and functional urethral length (R = 0.74, P = 0.02, and R = -0.92, P = 0.01; R = 0.71, P = 0.36, and R = -0.87, P = 0.000, respectively). 17beta-estradiol (E2) was significantly related to bladder neck descent in supine position (R = -0.62, P = 0.04) and 17beta-estradiol/estrone (E2/E1) was significantly related to cough leak point pressure (R = 0.79, P = 0.01). In conclusion, the urinary concentrations of endogenous steroid metabolites in postmenopausal patients with stress urinary incontinence were not significantly different from normal patients and were not significantly different between grade I and grade II patients with stress urinary incontinence. Some endogenous steroid metabolites were positively or negatively significantly related to prognostic parameters of stress urinary incontinence.

Abstract
In cavitation experiments with deuterated acetone, tritium decay activity above background levels was detected. In addition, evidence for neutron emission near 2.5 million electron volts was also observed, as would be expected for deuterium-deuterium fusion. Control experiments with normal acetone did not result in tritium activity or neutron emissions. Hydrodynamic shock code simulations supported the observed data and indicated highly compressed, hot (10(6) to 10(7) kelvin) bubble implosion conditions, as required for nuclear fusion reactions.

Abstract
The cytochrome P450 enzymes (P450s or CYPs) are a superfamily of hemeproteins that catalyze the monooxygenation of a wide range of endobiotic and xenobiotic substrates. A typical strategy in toxicological research and testing involves applying a toxicant at high doses for a short period to homogeneous animals under controlled conditions. However, the conditions of this approach have very little in common with actual human exposure. Transgenic (Tg) mice carrying human genes encoding a drug-metabolizing enzyme (CYP) offer a solution to many of the difficulties in the evaluation of chemical toxicity. It has been demonstrated that the expression of human CYP transgenes under the control of mammalian-inducible promoters exhibits relatively poor fold increases after induction. In this study, we used the tetracycline-regulated (tet) promoter system to increase the expression of the human CYP1B1 (hCYP1B1) gene in the tissues of transgenic mice. By mating two lineages of transgenic mice, double transgenic (dTg) mice expressing both tTA and hCYP1B1 genes under the control of the tet promoter were successfully produced, into which the two transgenes were introduced in an embryo. The expression pattern of tTA-driven hCYP1B1 transgene featured a fold induction of more than 3 to 12 in the brain, heart, and lung and 2- to 4-fold induction in the liver, kidney, and intestine upon doxycycline removal. Immunohistochemical staining with hCYP1B1 antibody was also increased by the removal of doxycycline. In addition, the activities of CYP liver microsomes in the dTg mice without doxycycline showed an increase compared to that in the dTg mice treated with doxycycline. The level of activities correspond to the levels of human CYP1B1 protein expression in the Tg mice (-dox) that was increased by 2-fold induction as compared to that of the dTg mice with doxycycline. Thus, overproduction in Tg can be purified and the activity of purified human CYP1B1 can be characterized by alterations to the coding sequence in order to solve the physiological function of this enzyme in a humanized in vivo system. It is also possible to examine the activity of purified human CYP1B1 using several environmental toxicants such as procarcinogens.

Abstract
Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD1) catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide radicals produced during biological oxidations and environmental stress. Here we have investigated the effect of the most toxic dioxin, 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), on the promoter of the Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD1) gene in HepG2 and HeLa cells using the chloramphenicol acetyltransferase gene as a reporter. The SOD1 promoter was activated 4- to 5-fold by TCDD treatment, in a concentration-dependent manner. In addition, the level of SOD1 mRNA and the enzymatic activity of the SOD1 protein were also enhanced on exposure of the cells to TCDD. Functional analysis of the regulatory region of the SOD1 gene by deletion and point mutation, and the use of a heterologous promoter system, showed that the SOD1 gene was transactivated by TCDD via the xenobiotic-responsive element (XRE). Gel mobility shift assays also confirmed the induction and the inducible binding of a receptor-ligand complex to XRE. Yeast cells that overexpress hSOD1 appeared to be more resistant to TCDD than the wild type. These results demonstrate that SOD1 is induced by TCDD via the XRE. The induced SOD1 may accelerate the neutralization of the superoxide anion and thus reduce the oxidative damage associated with dioxin toxicity.

Abstract
Sixty-five consecutive patients undergoing nonemergent repair of an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) originating above the visceral and/or renal arteries were studied to determine operative results and identify factors influencing outcome of proximal AAA repair. Factors associated with postoperative morbidity were analyzed using multivariate analysis. There were no postoperative deaths, paraplegia/paraparesis, or symptomatic visceral ischemia. Proximal AAA repair can be accomplished with acceptable mortality. If renal artery bypass or reimplantation is anticipated, cold renal perfusion may protect against renal dysfunction. Postoperative pulmonary dysfunction can be reduced by avoiding radial division of the diaphragm.

Abstract
In this paper, we suggest an automatic fat region setting method in computed tomography to measure body fat. Quantitative measurement of body fat is important for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases related to obesity. The evaluation methods of obesity such as weight and height ratio, waiste and hip circumference ratio, and subcutaneous fat thickness by clipper, have a weak point that they do not measure body fat quantitatively. To overcome the weak point a body fat measurement method by computed tomography has been tried recently. The body fat measurement by computed tomography presents volume of body fat quantitatively at a specific region such as subcutaneous and abdominal fats. Computed tomography provides an image consisting of voxels with Hounsfield unit which is proportional to the density at the voxels. In general, the Hounsfield units of the body fat is known as it has the values from -150 to -50. However, the Hounsfield unit range of the fat is different for every person and every region of a person. In this paper, we show the difference of the body fat range in the Hounsfield units for 20 persons and various regions of a person, and we suggest an automatic setting method of the body fat region in the Hounsfield units due to the Gaussian function fitting of the histogram in the computed tomography image.

Abstract
We propose an optimal buffered compression algorithm for shape coding as defined in the forthcoming MPEG-4 international standard. The MPEG-4 shape coding scheme consists of two steps: first, distortion is introduced by down and up scaling; then, context-based arithmetic encoding is applied. Since arithmetic coding is "lossless," the down up scaling step is considered as a virtual quantizer. We first formulate the buffer-constrained adaptive quantization problem for shape coding, and then propose an algorithm for the optimal solution under buffer constraints. Previously, the fact that a conversion ratio (CR) of 1/4 makes a coded image irritating to human observers for QCIF size was reported for MPEG-4 shape coding. Therefore, careful consideration for small size images such as QCIF should be given to prevent coded images from being unacceptable. To this end, a low bit rate tuned algorithm is proposed in this paper as well. Experimental results are given using an MPEG-4 shape codec.

Abstract
The human papillomaviruses (HPV)-16 and HPV-18 referred to as high-risk HPVs are strongly associated with anogenital malignancies as well as benign epithelial cysts. It has been demonstrated that transgenic mice carrying HPV-16 E6-E7 under the control of the MMTV LTR developed malignant tumors including salivary gland carcinoma, lymphoma, skin histiocytomas and testicular tumors in a non-mammary gland specific manner. Another regulatory unit of rat beta-casein gene can confer the expression of fusion gene preferentially in the mammary glands of transgenic mice in a developmentally regulated manner. In order to generate mammary tumor formation in transgenic mice directing HPV16E6 gene alone into the mammary gland, this regulatory unit was fused to the E6 gene of HPV-16 type to constructing fusion gene. By screening 51 newborn founder transgenic mice, three mice carrying transgenes were identified. One line termed TG32 developed in a mammary gland tumor with large subcutaneous mass in the left rib region at 17 months of age. The levels of E6 transcript in the mass-tumor of TG32 line were lower than those in non-tumor mammary gland of identical TG32 and of TG250. In each tissue of TG32 line, high expression of E6 transcript was detected both in the mammary gland and brain. Histological analysis showed that cells from mammary gland tumor of the TG32 line had also hyperplasia appearance, with irregular or increased total number of mitotic rate. These observations suggest that developing phenotype and the level of E6 transcripts in the process of malignant transformation may have different mechanisms involving the capacity to bind and destabilize p53, although for confirmation it is necessary to investigate many more transgenic mice.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Erosion of pancreatic pseudocysts into adjacent vessels is a rare but highly lethal cause of intra-abdominal hemorrhage. Percutaneous angiographic embolization (PAE) of the bleeding artery has recently been advocated as the preferred therapy. This study was undertaken to survey the outcome after treatment of this complication and to make recommendations for its management. METHODS An 11-year retrospective analysis was performed of all patients treated at a large tertiary care referral center for visceral artery pseudoaneurysms associated with pancreatic pseudocysts. RESULTS From 1988 to 1998, 256 patients were admitted for complications of pancreatic pseudocysts. Sixteen patients (11 men and 5 women) were identified in whom a pseudocyst had eroded into a major blood vessel with hemorrhage or development of a false aneurysm. The mean age was 45 years (range, 23-67 years). Active bleeding was present in 13 patients, whereas three had evidence of recent hemorrhage. Ten of 16 patients initially underwent operative therapy, four elective and six emergency, whereas six stable patients were initially treated with PAE. Technical failures of the initial treatment or secondary complications required both therapeutic modalities in six patients, which resulted in 13 total surgical interventions and 10 PAEs. The surgical morbidity rate was 62% (8 of 13), whereas that of PAE was 50% (5 of 10). Three deaths occurred after emergency operations, two of which failed to stop the bleeding, accounting for all of the deaths in the series (3 [19%] of 16). A trend was noted toward increased death with necrotizing pancreatitis (P =.07) and emergency surgery (P =.06). Ranson's criteria were not found to be predictive of death in this series. Surgical drainage procedures were required in seven (44%) of 16 patients for infections (n = 3) or mass effect of the pseudoaneurysm (n = 3). The mean size of pseudoaneurysms that required operative intervention for secondary complications was 13.9 cm, compared with 7.7 cm for all others in the series (P =.046). Long-term follow-up was available in all 13 survivors at a mean of 44 months (range, 1-108 months). CONCLUSIONS The management of pancreatic pseudocyst-associated pseudoaneurysms remains a challenging problem with high morbidity and death rates. Operation and PAE play complementary management roles. PAE is recommended as the initial therapy for hemodynamically stable patients. Surgery should be reserved for actively bleeding, hemodynamically unstable patients; for failed embolization; and for other secondary complications such as infection or extrinsic compression.

Abstract
PURPOSE To describe the computed tomographic (CT) findings of heterotopic pancreas in the stomach. MATERIALS AND METHODS CT findings in 12 patients with heterotopic pancreas in the stomach were reviewed. Surgical resection (n = 11) or endoscopic excision (n = 1) was performed in cases of symptomatic heterotopic pancreas (n = 4), suspected submucosal tumors (n = 7), and gastric carcinoma (n = 1). Seven patients underwent helical CT with water as an oral contrast agent; five underwent nonhelical CT with water-soluble contrast material. RESULTS Nine heterotopic pancreata were in the antrum and one each was in the body, fundus, and perigastric fat. Seven lesions were on the greater curvature aspect; five, on the lesser curvature aspect. Common CT findings were well-defined oval or round masses with smooth or serrated margins in the gastric antral wall. Four of the seven lesions in which helical CT was performed enhanced similarly to normal pancreas. Preoperatively, CT depicted 11 of the 12 lesions, but CT findings were interpreted correctly as heterotopic pancreas in only two; the remaining 10 were misinterpreted as other lesions. Atypical findings were cystic dilatation of heterotopic pancreatic duct in two, unusual location in the fundus or perigastric fat in two, and malignant transformation in one. CONCLUSION CT findings of heterotopic pancreas in the stomach appear to be nonspecific for diagnosis, except for location.

Abstract
PURPOSE Thrombolysis protects the structural and functional integrity of vein wall in an experimental model of acute deep venous thrombosis (DVT) immediately after treatment, but late sequelae have not been studied. We designed experiments to compare the effects of thrombolysis and surgical thrombectomy at 4 weeks after the treatment of DVT. METHODS DVT was produced bilaterally in male mongrel dogs by proximal and distal femoral vein ligation. Five dogs underwent sham operation. After 48 hours, the ligatures were removed, and the thrombosis was treated with either Fogarty balloon catheter thrombectomy (shear force, 60 g; n = 6) or catheter-directed urokinase infusion (4000 U/min for 90 minutes; n = 6). At 4 weeks, patency and valvular competence were determined by duplex ultrasound scanning. Thrombogenicity was studied by the measurement of radiolabeled fibrin and platelet deposition. Veins were explanted and prepared for histologic examination, scanning electron microscopy, and functional studies in organ chambers. RESULTS All veins were patent at 1 month. Recanalized thrombus was observed histologically in four (66%) thrombectomized veins, one (17%) thrombolyzed vein, and none of the sham-operated veins (P =.04). Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated similar luminal endothelial cell loss (11%-25%) in all three groups. Platelet and fibrin depositions were not different among groups. Valvular incompetence (reflux duration, >0.5 sec) did not differ significantly in the groups (thrombectomized veins, 2 of 12 (17%); thrombolyzed veins, 0 of 12 (0%); P = NS). In organ chamber studies, endothelium-dependent relaxations to calcium ionophore, but not adenosine diphosphate, were inhibited by an antagonist of nitric oxide production after thrombectomy (P <.05, thrombectomy vs sham- and thrombolysis-treated veins). All veins relaxed to exogenous nitric oxide. CONCLUSION Both thrombectomy and thrombolysis restored patency and achieved similar valvular competence. Surgical thrombectomy, however, resulted in more residual thrombus and contributed to changes in endothelium-mediated relaxations at 4 weeks. Thrombolysis maintained both structural integrity and endothelial function.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Our purpose was to evaluate the usefulness of early diastolic notch depth in predicting adverse perinatal outcome. STUDY DESIGN Uterine artery Doppler velocimetry is widely applied in predicting pregnancy outcomes. Recent studies of uterine artery early diastolic notch have demonstrated its usefulness as a marker for fetal well-being. The early diastolic notch represents the reflected blood flow of uteroplacental circulation. This study was carried out under the hypothesis that when early diastolic notch is present evaluating its depth plays a significant role in predicting poor pregnancy outcomes. Its ability to predict adverse perinatal outcomes was evaluated in 198 pregnant women with early diastolic notch after 28 weeks' gestation. RESULTS The incidence of adverse perinatal outcome (5-minute Apgar score <7, cesarean delivery because of fetal distress, admission to neonatal intensive care unit, fetal growth restriction, or perinatal death) was 90.5% when the notch index was </=0.70. When the notch index range was 0.70 to 0.79, 0.80 to 0.89, and >/=0.90, the respective incidences were 72.3%, 46. 9%, and 28.1%. CONCLUSION This study suggests that evaluating notch depth in the presence of early diastolic notch on uterine artery velocimetry during the third trimester would be a useful method for predicting adverse perinatal outcomes.

Abstract
Endoglucanase A from Clostridium thermocellum resistant to pancreatic proteinase was selected out of a range of microbial cellulases expressed in lactobacilli. Two Lactobacillus-E. coli expression vectors, harboring the endoglucanase gene from C. thermocellum under the control of its own promoter (pSD1) and the Lactococcus lactis lac A promoter (pSD2), were constructed separately. Intestinal Lactobacillus strains, L. gasseri and L. johnsonii, were electrotransformed with pSD1 and pSD2, and the stability of each plasmid was evaluated. The endoglucanase activities of 0.722 and 0.759 U/ml were respectively found in culture medium of L. gasseri and L. johnsonii containing pSD1, and of 0.407 U/ml in medium of L. gasseri harboring pSD2. When the probiotic characteristics such as acid-tolerance, bile-salt tolerance, and antibiotic susceptibility were investigated, L. gasseri and L. johnsonii were resistant to low pHs of 2 and 3. Also, L. johnsonii was bile-salt resistant in the presence of 0.5% oxgall and porcine bile extract. L. johnsonii and L. gasseri showed a rather homogeneous resistant pattern against tested antibiotics. Both strains were resistant to amikacin, bacitracin, gentamicin, streptomycin, kanamycin, and colistin.

Abstract
Unexplained maternal serum-fetoprotein (MSAFP) elevation has been known to be associated with adverse obstetric outcomes, however it is not sufficiently useful as a screening test. This study was undertaken to determine whether uterine artery Doppler velocimetry could define a subset of patients with an elevated MSAFP level in whom complications of pregnancy might develop. The subjects included 179 women between 26 and 28 weeks' gestation with MSAFP > or = 2.5 multiples of the median, in whom either the presence of an early diastolic notch or a resistance index 0.6 was considered as an abnormal Doppler velocimetry finding. Those subjects who displayed abnormal Doppler velocimetry findings showed an increased incidence of preeclampsia, preterm birth, IUGR, and IUFD compared to those subjects with only elevated MSAFP (p < 0.05). No differences were observed in the incidence of LBW. Positive predictive values of adverse obstetric outcomes were significantly higher in the group having both elevated MSAFP and abnormal Doppler velocimetry compared to the group with only elevated MSAFP (p < 0.05). Uterine artery Doppler velocimetry in the second trimester can improve the value of unexplained MSAFP elevation in the prediction of adverse obstetric outcomes.

Abstract
Neohesperidin dihydrochalcone (NHDC), a sweet compound derived from citrus fruits, was modified to a series of its oligosaccharides by transglycosylation activity of Bacillus stearothermophilus maltogenic amylase (BSMA). Maltotriose as a donor was reacted with NHDC as an acceptor to glycosylate for the purpose of increasing the solubility of NHDC. Maltosyl-NHDC was a major transglycosylation product among the several transfer products by TLC analysis. The structure of the major transglycosylation product was determined to be maltosyl-alpha-(1,6)-neohesperidin dihydrochalcone by MALDI-TOF/MS and (1)H and (13)C NMR. Maltosyl-NHDC was 700 times more soluble in water and 7 times less sweet than NHDC.

Abstract
Fibrinolytic properties have been detected in animal and human gallbladder (GB) bile. Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) has been reported in greater concentration in GB stone bile and may be a nucleating factor in the pathogenesis of GB stone formation. It is unknown whether or not human choledochal bile has similar properties, which could have a role in choledocholithiasis. The aims of this study were to determine the presence of fibrinolytic properties of human choledochal bile and to compare those properties among normal, acalculous, and calculous-infected choledochal bile. Tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) and PAI-1 of choledochal bile were measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay in patients with cholangitis due to acalculous bile duct obstructions (n = 9), choledocholithiasis with cholangitis (n = 20), and normal bile (n = 7). The t-PA concentration of choledochal bile was no different among the three groups (acalculous-infected bile, median 4.61 ng/ml, and calculous-infected bile, 4.61 ng/ml, versus normal bile, 7.33 ng/ml). PAI-1 was detected in choledochal bile in significantly greater concentrations in patients with acalculous cholangitis due to bile duct obstructions and choledocholithiasis with cholangitis (acalculous-infected bile, median 0.36 ng/ml, and calculous-infected bile, 0.1 ng/ml, versus normal bile, 0.02 ng/ml, p < 0.05), but the bile concentration of PAI-1 was no different between the acalculous and calculous-infected choledochal bile. Human choledochal bile possesses t-PA and PAI-1. PAI-1 was present in greater concentrations in both acalculous and calculous-infected choledochal bile. Increased levels of PAI-1 may be an epiphenomenon of cholangitis rather than a factor in the pathogenesis of choledocholithiasis.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the densities of antral gastrin and somatostatin-immunoreactive cells in Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection were related to the bacterial expression of cytotoxin-associated gene A (CagA). 32 patients who had underwent diagnostic esophagogastroduodenoscopy were studied. On the histologic examination all patients had antral gastritis. We divided the subjects into three groups. Group I consisted of 6 patients who had chronic superficial gastritis, group II, 9 patients who had H. pylori-associated gastritis but with no expression of CagA, and group III, 17 patients who had H. pylori-associated gastritis with the expression of CagA. In group I and II, serum gastrin levels, and antral G cell and D-cell were measured. In group III, serum gastrin levels, and antral G cell and D-cell were measured, before and after the eradication of H. pylori. The results were as follows. Firstly, serum gastrin concentrations were significantly higher in the patients with H. pylori infection than in the negative controls. Nextly, there was no correlation between the changes in antral G or D-cell density and H. pylori infection. Thirdly, group III had a significant increase in serum gastrin concentrations and a significant decrease in antral D-cell density than group I. Forthly, eradication of H. pylori in group III showed a significantly increased antral D-cell density. Our results suggest that hypergastrinemia in H. pylori-associated gastritis is relevant to the presence of CagA, and the possible mechanism of hypergastrinemia may be related to antral D-cell deficiency, which is caused by H. pylori infection with the expression of CagA.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To demonstrate that the introduction of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) type II receptor (TbetaR-II) decreases tumorigenicity in an aggressive murine renal carcinoma line, Renca. These cells do not express TbetaR-II. Because the presence of TbetaR-II in benign epithelial cells is ubiquitous, the ability to restore tumor suppressor activity in the Renca cell line with its introduction would elucidate the role of TbetaR-II as a tumor suppressor gene. METHODS Renca cells were stably transfected with a retrovirus-mediated TbetaR-II expression vector. In vitro sensitivity to growth inhibitory effect of TGF-beta was assessed by the 3H-thymidine incorporation assay. For in vivo testing, xenograft tumors were produced by subcutaneous injection of tumor cells into immunodeficient nude mice. The tumorigenicity of these TbetaR-II transfected cells was tested. Wild-type Renca cells and cells transfected with the control vector were also tested for comparison. RESULTS Expression of TbetaR-II mRNA was evident in Renca cells after transfection with the TbetaR-II construct. In vitro sensitivity to the growth inhibitory effect of TGF-beta was restored. This effect of TGF-beta was reversible with a neutralizing antibody specific for the extracellular domain of TbetaR-II. Xenografts grown from TbetaR-II transfected cells were significantly smaller, weighed less, and developed tumors later than those developed from wild-type Renca cells and those transfected with the control vector. CONCLUSIONS We conclude that TbetaR-II is a central mediator of tumorigenicity in Renca cells. As with other tumor suppressor genes, the loss of TbetaR-II expression allows for the development of an aggressive phenotype.
