Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate semen cryopreservation with ACP-Lact® diluent, which consists of coconut water powder (ACP) added to goat milk powder. After thawing, the samples were evaluated for sperm kinetics, membrane evaluation and in vivo insemination. For cryopreservation, a pool was made with the ejaculate of six goats, diluted in four equal aliquots for the respective treatments: T1 (ACP-Lact®); T2 (ACP-Lact® 50%); T3 (ACP + 2.5% egg yolk) and T4 (Tris + 2.5% egg yolk). After dilution of the treatments, the samples were placed in 0.5 ml straws and chilled at a rate of -1.07°C/min. After reaching 4°C and stabilizing for one hour, the straws were placed in nitrogen vapour at -60°C for 15 minutes and then immersed in liquid nitrogen (-196ºC). The straws were thawed in a 37°C water bath and kinetic assessments were performed immediately using a computerized semen analysis program (CSA), viability (EN), membrane functionality (HOST), mitochondrial activity (DAB) and DNA integrity assessment of spermatozoa. For the in vivo experiment, ten goats were inseminated, divided into two groups of five goats each, G1 inseminated with ACP-Lact® and G2 with ACP, by fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI). Regarding the kinetic parameters, the ACP-Lact® treatment showed higher progressive motility (PM) and sperm velocity than the other treatments (36.77%). In the VSL parameter the ACP-Lact diluent was superior to ACP and Tris. In viability the treatment with ACP-Lact® was superior to the treatment with Tris, 95% and 83% respectively. In FTAI two goats were born out of the 5 goats inseminated with ACP-Lact®. It was concluded that the use of ACP-Lact® for cryopreservation of caprine semen is efficient in maintaining seminal parameters during thawing in vitro and in vivo and proved to be a good alternative extender for the caprine species.

Abstract
Effects were assessed of the dilutants TRIS and ACP - 101c® with the addition of different guinea fowl (Numida meleagris) egg yolk concentrations. Fifteen ejaculates were collected from five goats of the Anglo Nubian breed. The ejaculates were pooled and then divided into 12 groups, two control groups (GC1 TRIS, with 2.5% Gallus gallus domesticus hen egg yolk GOGD), (GC2 Control Group ACP - 101c®, with the addition of 2.5% Gallus gallus domesticus hen egg yolk GOGD) and ten experimental groups (EG), containing TRIS and ACP added with different concentrations of egg yolk from guinea hen (Numida meleagris) (TRIS 2,5% GONM; TRIS 5% GONM; TRIS 10% GONM; TRIS 15% GONM; TRIS 20% GONM; ACP® 2,5% GONM; ACP® 5% GONM; ACP® 10% GONM; ACP® 15% GONM; ACP® 20% GONM). Then cryopreservation was carried out and the samples stored in liquid nitrogen (-196 °C). After seven days, the samples were thawed and assessed for spermatic kinetics, immunofluorescence and sperm morphology. Analysis of GOMN by the CASA system showed that the various parameters were similar to those of GOGD (P>0.05). The membrane integrity, mitochondrial potential and the acrosome were not influenced by the treatment (P>0.05) nor by the dilutant used for cryopreservation (P>0.05). The spermatic morphology was also preserved by the different GOGD and GONM concentrations in the ACP® and TRIS dilutants, with no statistically significant differences (P<0.05). It was concluded that Numida meleagris egg yolk, as external membrane cryoproctant added to the dilutants ACP-101c® and TRIS, improved goat semen quality.

Abstract
The study aimed to evaluate the effect of powdered coconut water-based diluent (ACP-101c) associated with extra virgin coconut oil (CO) as an external cryoprotectant in the conservation of cryopreserved buck sperm. For cryopreservation, the ejaculates from four bucks were pooled and divided into three aliquots and diluted at 37°C for treatments T1 (ACP-101c + 2.5% egg yolk +7% glycerol), T2 (ACP-101c + 2.5% CO +7% glycerol), and T3 (ACP-101c + 5% CO +7% glycerol). Then, the samples were packaged and cooled at a rate of 1.07°C/min decrease. Upon reaching 4°C, the samples were stored in a refrigerator at 4°C for 30 minutes for stabilization. After this period, the straws were frozen in nitrogen vapor for 15 minutes and then immersed and stored in liquid nitrogen at -196°C. After thawing, the samples were evaluated for sperm kinetics, plasma membrane integrity, acrosomal integrity, membrane functionality, mitochondrial activity (MA), and sperm morphology. In this study, no statistically significant differences were observed between the three treatments regarding the kinetic parameters (p > 0.05; Table 1). However, in relation to the velocities, a reduction was observed beyond the expected. There were no statistically significant differences between the diluents T1, T2, and T3 for the three velocities (curvilinear velocity [VCL], linear velocity [VSL], average path velocity [VAP]). Furthermore, no statistically significant differences were observed (p > 0.05) among treatments regarding the evaluation of membrane integrity, the functional membrane, MA, and sperm morphology after thawing. In conclusion, the use of CO in concentrations of 2.5% and 5.0% is effective in maintaining goat sperm quality, presenting itself as an alternative diluent for international programs of artificial insemination and embryo transfers.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to evaluate the physical and chemical characteristics of coconut water and to analyze the use of coconut water solution for the conservation of human corneas. METHODS This was an experimental and controlled study performed at the Eye Bank of the General Hospital of Fortaleza. The coconut water-based solution was prepared at the Goat Seed Technology Laboratory of the Department of Veterinary Medicine of the State University of Ceará. Discarded corneas from the Eye Bank were divided into two groups for sequential experiments: G1, coconut water-based solution (experimental group), and G2, conservative treatment with OPTISOL GS® (control group). The osmolality of corneas in G1 was analyzed sequentially at 275, 300, 325, 345, 365, and 400 mOsm/L. The viability of the corneas was determined by specular microscopy and biomicroscopy on the first, third, and seventh days. RESULTS Corneas preserved in a solution of 365 and 345 mOsm/L had a transparency of 8 mm until the third day and had diffuse edema in the periphery, central folds, and partial epithelium loss until the seventh day. The 365-mOsm/L solution was associated with the worst results during follow-up. Corneas placed in Optisol-GS retained their original aspects. CONCLUSIONS Coconut water-based preservative partially maintained corneal transparency and epithelial integrity, especially during the first three days of follow-up. The coconut water-based solutions used were not effective for use as preservatives in a human eye bank.

Abstract
Background: Sperm sexing aims to separate sperm populations in carriers of the “X” or “Y” chromosome. Currently, flow cytometry is a technique that allows greater accuracy; however, it causes structural changes in sperm, reduces viability, and has a high cost. As a result, other methods have been researched, including immunosexing, which uses monoclonal antibodies to detect sex-specific surface antigens. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the immunosexing technique using a monoclonal antibody against sex-specific protein (HY) in the conservation of ram and goat semen in ACP101/102c.Materials, Methods & Results: Ejaculates from 5 rams and 5 goats were collected with the aid of an artificial vagina; they were evaluated and submitted to the immunosexing protocol, according to the manufacturer's recommendations, using the Monoclonal Antibody Kit specific for mammalian sperm with “Y” chromosomes (HY; HY Biotechnology, Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil). After sexing, the supernatant was resuspended in the cryopreservation diluent: ACP ram (ACP101/102c + 20% egg yolk + 7% glycerol) and ACP goat (ACP101/102c + 2.5% egg yolk + 7% glycerol), packaged in 0.25 mL straws, refrigerated at 4°C, stabilized for 30 min, frozen in liquid nitrogen vapor (-60°C) for 15 min, immersed in liquid nitrogen, and stored in cryogenic cylinders. The samples were evaluated in natura (T1), after immunosexing (T2) and after thawing (T3) for sperm motility subjectively using conventional microscopy (40x). Plasma membrane integrity (IMP) and sperm cell morphology were evaluated by the smear staining technique using eosin-nigrosine dye, and the percentages of healthy and morphologically defect spermatozoa were determined. In the evaluation of ram semen regarding sperm motility and IMP, no statistically significant differences were observed between treatments after sexing in the evaluation of absolute data (P > 0.05), with the difference being observed only between T1 and T2, and T3 (P < 0.05). Regarding the relative percentage and sperm morphology, no statistically significant differences were observed (P > 0.05). Regarding the evaluation of goat semen samples, the motility parameters were consistent with the technique submitted; however, the IMP data did not appear as expected, requiring further evaluation for a better assessment of the technique for this species.Discussion: The data obtained from ram semen submitted to the immunosexing protocol, regarding the absolute evaluation of motility and IMP, demonstrated that the non-sexed semen (T1) was superior to the sexed treatments (T2 and T3); however, it is noteworthy that freezing started with approximately 50% of the cells, since the immunosexing technique results in a loss of viability of approximately 50% of the sperm, which corresponds to the ratio of sperm carrying the X chromosome. In addition, when the data in this study were transformed into relative values, no statistical differences were observed, indicating that the immunosexing protocol, as well as the freezing protocol, did not significantly affect the quality of ram sperm cells. In relation to the immunosexing of goat semen, future studies should be conducted in vitro to define a more appropriate protocol for the species and, in addition, in vivo studies should be performed to prove the quality of the technique. It was concluded that the immunosexing process using a monoclonal antibody against sex-specific protein (HY) associated with the use of powdered coconut water diluent (ACP101/102c) in the cryopreservation of semen proved to be efficient in the in vitro evaluation of ovine species.

Abstract
Background: Sperm sexing is increasing in use because pre-determining the sex of the calf allows greater profitability and promotes significant gains in the productive systems that utilize the technique. Deployment of a low-cost and practical preservation methodology may further favor the cost-benefit ratio. Flow cytometry, the most commonly used sexing technique, has high costs and is very restricted. As an alternative, immunosexing has been studied, which uses sex-specific monoclonal antibodies. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the immunosexing technique in conjunction with cryopreservation in ACP-102c and examine its economic aspects with regard to ram semen.Materials, Methods & Results: Ejaculates from two ram individuals were collected with the aid of an artificial vagina, evaluated, and submitted to the immunosexing protocol, according to the manufacturer's recommendations, using the Monoclonal Antibody Kit specific for mammalian sperm with “Y” chromosomes (HY; HY Biotechnology, Rio de Janeiro-RJ, Brazil). After sexing, the supernatant was resuspended in the cryopreservation diluent: ACP (ACP-102c + 20% egg yolk + 7% glycerol), packaged in 0.25 mL straws, refrigerated to 4°C, stabilized for 30 min, frozen in liquid nitrogen vapors (-60°C) for 15 min, immersed in liquid nitrogen, and stored in cryogenic cylinders. The samples were thawed and evaluated for sperm kinetics both by using computerized semen analysis with SCA® software (Sperm Class Analyzer version 5.0) and subjectively comparing specimens from the two animals using conventional microscopy (40x). Plasma membrane integrity (IMP) and sperm cell morphology were evaluated by the smear staining technique using eosin-nigrosine dye, and the percentages of healthy and normal spermatozoa were determined. A bibliographic survey and a market study of similar products and technologies were carried out to provide an economic viability metanalysis of the bioproduct (ACP-102c) and bioprocess (immunosex). The data were analyzed using R-project©, and comparisons made between animals and between thawing periods using T test. There were no statistically significant differences between animals and between periods (P > 0.05), except for the normal sperm parameter, in which animal A1 had the lowest percentage (P < 0.05). As for the cost-benefit ratio, flow cytometry as a technique is more laborious and expensive, while immunosexing associated with cryopreservation in ACP-102c diluent has proven more practical, with regards to both sperm sexing techniques and diluents for sperm conservation.Discussion: In general, the quality of cryopreserved sexed semen was lower than that of non-sexed semen; however, in this study, both in the comparison between animals and between evaluation periods, similar values of motility, viability, and sperm morphology were obtained for sexed and several non-sexed cryopreserved semen samples, demonstrating that immunosexing did not severely affect the sperm structure, and that the ACP-102c conservation medium was efficient at maintaining the plasma membrane of these sperm. In the evaluation of economic aspects, it was observed that immunosexing, associated with cryopreservation in ACP-102c diluent, proved to be the most practical technique, requiring only conventional equipment, and allowing a greater field of application, since the immunosexing semen can be used for primiparous and multiparous females. Thus, it was concluded that immunosexing associated with cryopreservation in an ACP-102c diluent was more cost-effective, more practical, and had significantly improved sperm quality results after sexing.

Abstract
Background: Semen extenders are required to protect and preserve semen, and the development of suitable extenders is key for artificial insemination. Although the use of Tris-based diluent is widespread, new diluents such as powdered coconut water have been developed for better sperm protection. One way to evaluate the effectiveness of diluents is through microscopic analyses that evaluate sperm motility, vigor, and concentration. However, these analyses are limited, and may not provide accurate results. New evaluation techniques have been studied, and one of the tests that can be used to add reliability to these analyses is mitochondrial activity evaluation, which can sum all the parameters, and provide a more accurate evaluation. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of ACP-102c in cryopreserved ram semen.Materials, Methods & Results: Five semen samples were collected from two ram breeders using artificial vagina (n = 10). Each ejaculate was divided into the following two treatments: T1 - ACP-102c + 20% egg yolk + 7% glycerol and T2 - TRIS + 20% egg yolk + 7% glycerol. Extended semen samples were then packed in 0.5 mL plastic straws, subjected through the refrigeration curve up to 4°C (0.35° C/min), and equilibrated for 2 h at 4°C. Subsequently, the straws were placed at 4 cm above liquid nitrogen level (-60°C) for 15 min, immersed, and then finally stored in the liquid nitrogen at -196°C. Both fresh and thawed samples were evaluated for total and progressive sperm motility using conventional microscopy (40x), and the same evaluator on each occasion. For plasma membrane integrity (IMP), the smear staining technique with the Eosin-Nigrosin staining was used; 200 sperms were counted and classified as whole (unstained) and unhealthy (stained). Mitochondrial activity was evaluated using a cytochemical technique based on the oxidation of 3,3'-diaminobenzidine (DAB); 200 sperms were counted, and classified into four classes (I, II, III, and IV) according to the degree of coloration of the intermediate part. Fresh semen showed no significant difference (P > 0.05) between treatments with respect to motility parameters; however, T2 showed significantly inferior results regarding plasma membrane integrity. After thawing, T2 was significantly higher in sperm motility parameters compared to T1. The mitochondrial activity and plasma membrane integrity parameters did not show any significant difference between the treatments.Discussion: The TRIS-based diluent showed higher motility values than ACP-102c; however, motility rates in ACP-102c diluent, although lower, are considered satisfactory for insemination, which requires semen with minimal progressive motility of 30%. Notably, the cryopreservation protocol used in this study is the standard for TRIS-based diluent, and it is known that the optimal rate of refrigeration and cryopreservation may differ according to the composition of the storage medium; therefore, we may assume that the protocol used is not yet appropriate for the ACP-102c diluent, and further studies are required. IMP is an essential attribute for fertilization, and cryopreservation can affect the plasma membrane as observed in this study. Cryopreserved semen reduced the percentage of class I mitochondrial reaction sperms in both treatments, demonstrating that cryopreservation affects the mitochondrial activity of the intermediate portion of the sperm; however, there was no difference between treatments in thawed semen. Thus, we concluded that the ACP-102c conservation medium maintains seminal quality after thawing, and it can be used in artificial insemination processes.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of coconut water as a component of extender in different formulations for cooling equine sperm. One ejaculate of fourteen stallions was collected. Sperm was diluted to 50 × 106 sperm/mL using five different extenders: ACP-105: powdered coconut water extender (ACP-105, ACP Biotecnologia, Brazil); ACP-Milk: ACP-105 + 20 g/L of skimmed milk; ACP-EY 2.5%: ACP-105 + 2.5% of egg yolk; ACP-EY 5%: ACP-105 + 5% of egg yolk; and BotuSêmen (Botupharma, Botucatu, Brazil) and cooled in passive cooling device (BotuFlex, Botupharma, Botucatu, Brazil) at 5 and 15°C for 24 hours. Sperm kinetics and plasma membrane integrity (PMI) were evaluated by computer-assisted sperm analysis and fluorescence staining, respectively, at T0 (before cooling) and T24 (24 hours after cooling). Sperm kinetics did not differ at T0 among groups (P > .05); however, at T24, these parameters were significantly lower in ACP-105 (5°C, total motility [TM]: 9.2 ± 3.6%; progressive motility [PM]: 2.7 ± 1.6%; percentage of fast-moving spermatozoa [RAP]: 4.8 ± 3.0%; 15°C, TM: 10.6 ± 3.0%; PM: 1.1 ± 0.5%; RAP: 4.8 ± 1.9%) and ACP-EY 5% (5°C, TM: 28.0 ± 6.3%; PM: 5.7 ± 1.8%; RAP: 15.9 ± 6.0%; 15°C, TM: 30.0 ± 6.0%; PM: 6.9 ± 2.1%; RAP: 17.6 ± 5.3%) compared with BotuSêmen (5°C, TM: 66.2 ± 5.6%; PM: 21.1 ± 2.8%; RAP: 53.9 ± 6.1%; 15°C, TM: 63.4 ± 5.4%; PM: 17.2 ± 2.8%; RAP: 51.4 ± 6.3%) (P < .05). All groups exhibited similar PMI at tested moments and cooling temperatures (5°C: 83%; 15°C: 84%) (P > .05). Further studies are necessary to evaluate powdered coconut water in different compositions of sperm extender; however, coconut-based extender as used in this study was not an alternative to preserve sperm parameters of cooled equine sperm.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to access the genetic diversity and relatedness between Canindé and British Alpine goat breeds in the States of Piauí and Ceará using microsatellite markers. Genomic DNA was isolated from hair samples of 99 goats belonging to six different flocks. A panel of polymorphic heterologous microsatellite loci was used to genotype individuals. The microsatellite markers resulted in a total number of 145 alleles, with an average of 8.5 alleles per locus. The observed and expected heterozygosities were ≥0.687 and ≥0.627, respectively, for all loci. The polymorphic information content showed that all loci were highly informative with an overall mean of 0.757. Overall FST across all populations and loci was 18%, which was consistent with the coefficient of gene differentiation (GST = 0.104). AMOVA revealed that 12.8% of the variation was captured between breeds. The Bayesian STRUCTURE clustering detected the maximum likelihood for a model of two genetically distinct groups, in agreement with the number of predefined studied breeds and the two-dimensional plot from the PCoA analysis. The exotic British Alpine breed and the naturalized Brazilian Canindé breed were clearly differentiated by the microsatellite markers, indicating that these two breeds have distant genetic identities, despite the phenotypic similarity.

Abstract

Abstract
A new piggyBac-related transposable element (TE) was found in the genome of a mutant Anticarsia gemmatalis multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus interrupting an inhibitor of apoptosis gene. This mutant virus induces apoptosis upon infection of an Anticarsia gemmatalis cell line, but not in a Trichoplusia ni cell line. The sequence of the new TE (which was named IDT for iap disruptor transposon) has 2531 bp with two DNA sequences flanking a putative Transposase (Tpase) ORF of 1719 bp coding for a protein with 572 amino acids. These structural features are similar to the piggyBac TE, also reported for the first time in the genome of a baculovirus. We have also isolated variants of this new TE from different lepidopteran insect cells and compared their Tpase sequences.

Abstract

Abstract
Helioid bodies are exceedingly rare, intranuclear, rounded inclusions with peripheral radiating filaments. These structures, which were formerly observed in only three cases of proliferative breast epithelial lesions, appeared in 0.5-1% of the neoplastic cells of a case of dedifferentiated acinic cell carcinoma of the parotid gland. Helioid bodies are related to rough endoplasmic reticulum cisternae, which suggests that they are the result of the condensation and partial crystallization of their contents when sequestrated into the nuclear compartment of the cell. The presence of helioid bodies may be related to secretory dysfunction of the tumor cells associated with the process of neoplastic dedifferentiation.

Abstract
The case of a patient with a large goitre associated with hypercalcitoninaemia and fasting hypoglycaemia is reported. Pentagastrin (PG) test was negative. Repeated measurements of fasting glycaemia, insulin and C peptide established the diagnosis of insulinoma. After localization by endoscopic ultrasonography, a distal pancreatectomy was performed and a small insulinoma was recovered. Glycaemia and calcitonin (CT) became normal. The tumour cells displayed a strong immunoreactivity for insulin and CT. Cytogenetical evaluation of the tumour revealed a translocation t(1;9) (p13;p22).

Abstract
Mitochondria-rough endoplasmic reticulum complexes identical to the ones usually found in chordoma were frequently observed in tumors cells of a malignant fibrous histiocytoma arising in the left thigh of a 48-year-old woman. Although the significance of these structures is unknown, this finding is consistent with the known transformation of chordoma into malignant fibrous histiocytoma.

Abstract
Central neurocytomas are a well-characterized group of neuronal tumors usually arising in the supratentorial ventricular cavities. We describe the anatomical and clinical study of seven of these neoplasms. Patients were in the first four decades of life, and tumors were usually located in one of the lateral ventricles. Surgical resection was subtotal in 6 cases. Light microscopic examination revealed predominantly benign lesions with morphological features similar to the so-called ependymoma of the foramen of Monro, of the oligodendrogliomas, and of the neuroblastomas. Immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy confirmed the diagnosis in each case, showing expression of neuron specific enolase and synaptophysin and containing microtubuli, neurosecretory granules, and presynaptic vesicles. In agreement with the literature, the authors stress the benign behaviour of most of these tumors and the need for systematic immunohistochemical and ultrastructural study. The actual roles of the extent of resection and of postoperative radiotherapy are still a matter of discussion.

Abstract
Preoperative bilateral and simultaneous catheterization of the inferior petrosal sinuses was performed in a patient with Cushing's syndrome. This procedure revealed parallel intersinus gradients for ACTH, PRL, GH and a response of all these hormones to CRH. The patient had transphenoidal surgery and a soft white-yellowish mass occupying the whole sella conditioned a total hypophysectomy. Morphologic studies and immunostaining techniques revealed a rare mixed pituitary adenoma of ACTH and GH containing cells and failed to demonstrate PRL immunoreactivity in the tumor cells. These results are of clinical and speculative interest. Whether GH and PRL secretion in response to CRH stems from the tumor or reflect hormone release by non-tumor cells via a paracrine effect remains to be defined.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A kindred affected by multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2A (MEN 2A), associated with symmetric, bilateral, scapular pruritic skin lesions (PSL), is reported. METHODS There were 21 members, including the propositus, in four generations. Screening of 10 family members showed a palpable thyroid tumor in 1 and positive results for a pentagastrin test in 7 others. Two of these patients had surgically confirmed pheochromocytoma. Two others had a biochemical diagnosis of pheochromocytoma but did not have surgery. RESULTS Medullary thyroid carcinoma was confirmed in five patients and nodular C-cell hyperplasia in another. In five affected adults, PSL were observed in the interscapular region, crossing the midline in some. These lesions were characterized by hyperkeratosis and hyperpigmentation. In all the patients, the pruritus had been present long before the clinical or biochemical diagnosis. Skin biopsies were performed in two of these patients. No amyloid deposits were found (Congo red stain and electron microscopic examination were used). Two children (14 and 6 years old) in the fourth generation complained of scapular pruritus, although skin lesions were not apparent. CONCLUSIONS Localized PSL must be sought when screening for MEN 2A.

Abstract
Enlarged mitochondria and intramitochondrial dense structures have been reported to occur in a great variety of animal and human cells under normal, pathologic, and experimental conditions. Three cases of benign thyroid lesions are described in which large cytoplasmic inclusions were seen on light microscopy. These inclusions were stained with toluidine blue but not with Sudan black B, as was seen in consecutive sections. Ultrastructural observation showed that they corresponded to giant mitochondria. Bundles of dense filaments and round, electron-dense bodies were observed in the matrix of the enlarged mitochondria. Incubation of ultrathin sections with proteolytic enzymes (pepsin, trypsin, and type XVI-protease) led to a striking decrease in the electron density of both types of intramitochondrial matrical structures. These observations demonstrate that a major proteic component exists in intramitochondrial filamentous bundles and in dense bodies.

Abstract
The authors studied the clinical and ultrastructural features of 8 cases of Neuronal Ceroid-Lipofuscinosis (NCL). Five cases of the late-infantile type and 3 cases of the juvenile type. The clinical diagnosis of all cases was confirmed by the electron microscopy analysis of the peripheral blood lymphocytes and biopsy material from the skin, palpebral conjunctiva, skeletal muscle and rectal mucosa. Our observations agree with previous reports concerning the predominance of curvilinear bodies in the cells of the late infantile type, and fingerprint-like structures in those of the juvenile type. The finding of parallel tubular arrays and NCL inclusions associated in the same lymphocyte (frequently in the same vacuole) suggests that those structures could be related to the metabolic error of NCL. Ultrastructural examination of microbuffycoats of peripheric blood lymphocytes is a simple, time-saving and reliable method that allows specific confirmation of a clinical diagnosis of Neuronal Ceroid-Lipofuscinosis.

Abstract
A case of plasma cell granuloma of the tongue in an otherwise symptomless 48-year-old caucasian female is reported. The polyclonal nature of the plasmocytes was revealed by immunostaining of kappa and lambda light chains. Electron microscopic observations showed typical mature plasmocytes. A parasitic etiology of this type of lesion is suggested.

Abstract
A simple method of obtaining analogue images from traced models of biological specimens is presented. It consists of the photographic defocusing of traced models and it is illustrated with negatively stained cylindrical forms of the ASFV; the black lines of the trace in the model correspond to the negative stain surrounding the viral morphological subunits as seen in the electron micrograph. The photographic defocusing is the means by which the traced model is filtered and is used to introduce grey levels on an otherwise black and white image. The right amount of defocusing is attained when the width of the trace of the model equals the width of the rim of the negative stain appearing between the morphological subunits in the electron micrograph.

Abstract
We studied the ultrastructural alterations of the dense bodies of peripheral blood lymphocytes in one case of neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis. These cytoplasmic vesicles were characterized by vacuolar transformation and "fingerprint" content. When we tilted the specimens, the "fingerprint" arrangement was shown to be the same as the arrangement of the crystalloid inclusions found in the same cells. Both vacuoles and periodic cytoplasmic inclusions could be due to a disorder of secondary lysosomes--the lymphocytic dense bodies.

Abstract
A method for the electron microscopic study of human peripheral lymphocytes by which very small buffy coats are obtained through centrifugation of heparinized whole blood in glass or plastic microhematocrit tubes is presented. This method is time saving and efficient, yielding well preserved material and a comparatively large number of mononuclear cells (mainly lymphocytes) in each thin section.

Abstract
Ovariectomized rats, chronically treated with cannabis extract or control solution, were given different hormonal treatments. Results indicated that both cannabis-treated and estrogen-treated animals were more aggressive than controls. Furthermore, aggressiveness was virtually abolished when cannabis-treated females were made sexually receptive by estrogen and progesterone treatments. After 25 days of cannabis or control solution treatment, all subjects were sacrificed. The levels and turnover rate of brain 5-HT and peripheral plasma corticosterone were then assayed. Data indicated both a significant inverse relationship between plasma corticosterone and whole brain levels of 5-HT(r = -0.742 to -0.985) for all groups and a significant positive relationship between aggressive behavior and plasma corticosterone (r = +0.675 to +0.946) in all groups that were fighting prior to decapitation. Results are tentatively explained, suggesting that the variability of the female response to stress during the different phases of the estrus cycle, permitted them to perform differently after chronic cannabis treatment. 5-HT is apparently involved, either directly in its effects on aggressive behavior or indirectly through the pituitary-adrenocortical axis activation.

Abstract
Cultures from pig bone marrow cells were infected with ASFV and the replication cycle was studied. In the cytoplasmic replication areas there are a differentiation of membrane segments. Some of them are polygonal, which give rise to virus particles. An over production of viral coded materials, including non-polygonal membranes seems to be an important feature of the replicative cycle of ASFV in this cell system. Viruses are released enveloped with a cellular membrane. Paracrystalline arrays of viruses are seldom seen in the cytoplasm. At no time did we see viruses in the nucleus. Infected cells showed marked cytopathic effect, beginning at early times post infection.
