Farmers' knowledge, attitudes and practices towards management of cassava pests and diseases in forest transition and Guinea savannah agro-ecological zones of Ghana

Background: Cassava is a major staple root crop in Ghana, which serves as a food security and an income generating crop for farming families. In spite of its importance, the crop is plagued with biotic factors such as pests and diseases, resulting in yield and income reductions. Methods: Farmers' knowledge, attitudes and practices towards cassava pest and disease management were investigated. A mixed research questionnaire was used to collect both qualitative and quantitative data from 94 cassava farm households across two major cassava growing agro-ecologies. Results: Using descriptive statistics, parametric and non-parametric analysis, our study revealed that farmers' knowledge on cassava pests was high but low for diseases. Whiteflies ( Bemisia tabaci Gennadius), grasshoppers ( Zonocerus variegatus), aphids ( Aphis gossypii Glover), mealybugs ( Phenacoccus manihoti), termites ( Isoptera), and grasscutters ( Thryonomys swinderianus) were perceived as the most common damaging pests. Farmers' descriptions showed that disease pathogens attacked foliar tissues, stem and root tissues and caused leaf dropping and die back. Cassava mosaic disease and root rot were the most common diseases; however, disease descriptions suggested the incidence of viral, bacterial and fungal diseases. Some of the farmers observed mixed symptoms on their farms. The results also showed that only 25.5% cultivated improved varieties. Management actions applied included field sanitation practices and pesticide application. The effectiveness level of the control actions was rated moderately effective. Conclusions: The analysis showed heterogeneity in personal and farm level characteristics of respondents across the two agro-ecologies, but agro-ecologies were independent of the management practices employed. There is a need to improve farmers' access to improved disease-free planting materials through efficient dissemination pathways and increase farmers' knowledge on cassava pests, diseases and integrated management through publfic awareness creation and capacity building by extension agents and research institutions. Continued government investment is needed to achieve sustainable outcomes.

Genetic diversity and population structure analysis of Ghanaian and exotic cassava accessions using simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers

Genetic diversity is fundamentally important in crop improvement and provides plants with the capacity to meet the demands of changing environments. This work was carried out to assess the diversity and the extent of genetic relatedness among a number of assembled cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) accessions. We conducted a microsatellite marker analysis of 89 cassava accessions collected from Ghanaian and exotic sources. These accessions were assayed using 35 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. A total of 167 alleles were detected from 35 polymorphic markers with an average of 4.77 alleles per locus. High allelic frequency was detected across the accessions, ranging from 0.32 to 0.99 with an average of 0.62 per marker. Observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.03 - 0.97 across the accessions. Polymorphism information content (PIC) ranged from 0.03 to 0.78 with a mean of 0.45, indicating high level of polymorphism across the accessions. Comparatively, higher number of alleles, gene diversity and observed heterozygosity were detected among the local accessions compared with the exotic accessions indicating rich genetic diversity among them. Population structure analysis based on STRUCTURE identified two subpopulations and a large number of admixtures. Cluster analysis based on the neighbour joining algorithim further separated the collection into seven sub-groupings irrespective of geographical origin. This indicates the possible sharing of common genomic regions occurring across the accessions. High allelic frequency differences and levels of heterozygosity were observed among the germplasm. These findings indicated significant genetic variability in the germplasm to warrant selection.

Genetic variability, stability and heritability for quality and yield characteristics in provitamin A cassava varieties

Cassava is widely consumed in many areas of Africa, including Ghana, and is a major part of most household diets. These areas are characterized by rampant malnutrition, because the tuberous roots are low in nutritional value. Provitamin A biofortified cassava varieties have been developed by the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture, but adoption of these varieties in Ghana will largely depend on their agronomic performance, including fresh root yield, dry matter content, resistance to major pests and diseases, mealiness, starch content and the stability of these traits. Eight provitamin A varieties with two white checks were planted in three environments for two seasons to determine stability and variability among the varieties for important traits. There were significant variations in performance between varieties and between environments for cassava mosaic disease, root number, fresh root yield and starch content. High broad-sense heritability and genetic advance were observed in all traits, except for storage root number, and could be exploited through improvement programs. This study identified the best performing enhanced provitamin A varieties for traits that are key drivers of variety adoption in Ghana. In view of this, some varieties can be recommended for varietal release after on-farm testing. The study also showed the possibility of tapping heterosis after careful selection of parents.
