Biological activities of naringenin: A narrative review based on in vitro and in vivo studies

Naringenin (4',5,7-trihydroxyflavonone) is a phytochemical mainly found in citrus fruits. It is a promising phytochemical for human health because of its beneficial effects. This review aims to present comprehensive information on naringenin biological activities along with its action mechanisms and explain the pharmacokinetic properties of naringenin. This study involves a comprehensive literature review of in vitro and in vivo studies examining the effects of naringenin. Naringenin has antidiabetic, anticancer, antimicrobial, antiobesity, gastroprotective, immunomodulator, cardioprotective, nephroprotective, and neuroprotective properties. These properties are primarily attributed to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. The most important antioxidant activities of naringenin including free radical scavenging and preventing lipid peroxidation. Naringenin can increase the concentration of antioxidant enzymes and inhibit metal chelation and various pro-oxidant enzymes. Anti-inflammatory activities of naringenin are associated with decreased mitogen-activated protein kinase activities and nuclear factor kappa B by modulating the expression and release of proinflammatory cytokine and enzymes. In vitro and in vivo studies show that naringenin has promising biological activities for a variety of diseases. More research must be conducted on the bioactivities of naringenin, and to determine its optimum dose. In addition, the efficiency of naringenin must be examined with enhanced bioavailability methods to be able to increase its therapeutic effect.

Determination gender-based hybrid artificial intelligence of body muscle percentage by photoplethysmography signal

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

Muscle mass is one of the critical components that ensure muscle function. Loss of muscle mass at every stage of life can cause many adverse effects. Sarcopenia, which can occur in different age groups and is characterized by a decrease in muscle mass, is a critical syndrome that affects the quality of life of individuals. Aging, a universal process, can also cause loss of muscle mass. It is essential to monitor and measure muscle mass, which should be sufficient to maintain optimal health. Having various disadvantages with the ordinary methods used to estimate muscle mass increases the need for the new high technology methods. This study aims to develop a low-cost and trustworthy Body Muscle Percentage calculation model based on artificial intelligence algorithms and biomedical signals.

METHODS

For the study, 327 photoplethysmography signals of the subject were used. First, the photoplethysmography signals were filtered, and sub-frequency bands were obtained. A quantity of 125 time-domain features, 25 from each signal, have been extracted. Additionally, it has reached 130 features in demographic features added to the model. To enhance the performance, the spearman feature selection algorithm was used. Decision trees, Support Vector Machines, Ensemble Decision Trees, and Hybrid machine learning algorithms (the combination of three methods) were used as machine learning algorithms.

RESULTS

The recommended Body Muscle Percentage estimation model have the perfomance values for all individuals R=0.95, for males R=0.90 and for females R=0.90 in this study.

CONCLUSION

Regarding the study results, it is thought that photoplethysmography-based models can be used to predict body muscle percentage.

Sustained cytokine production and immunophenotypic changes in human neuroblastoma cell lines transduced with a human gamma interferon vector

The majority of human neuroblastomas express low to undetectable levels of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I and II antigens (MHC-I and -II). We studied the effects of gamma interferon (gamma-IFN) transduction on expression of these antigens in six human neuroblastoma cell lines with and without genomic amplification of the N-myc oncogene. All six were stably transduced with an MoMLV-based gamma-IFN retroviral vector (DAh gamma-IFN). G418-resistant cells were assayed for MHC-I, MHC-II, B7-1, and neuroblastoma-associated antigen expression, as well as for gamma-IFN levels in cell culture supernatants. Sustained gamma-IFN production, 2 to > 1000 units/10(6) cells/d, was attained for five of six transduced cell lines and persisted for up to 9 months. This resulted in marked upregulation of MHC-I and MHC-II expression in LA-N-1, LA-N-6, and CHLA-127 cells and moderate upregulation in SK-N-Fi and SK-N-AS cells. One cell line (LA-N-1) had marked induction of MHC-I and MHC-II despite marginal levels of gamma-IFN production. Expression of CD28 ligand B7-1 (as determined by BB1 antibody) remained unchanged in all gamma-IFN-transduced cell lines tested. Expression of several neuroblastoma-associated antigens (NKH1A, 126-4, HSAN 1.2, HNK, 459, and 390) was upregulated in some of the gamma-IFN-transduced cell lines. These results demonstrate that preparation of gamma-IFN expressing neuroblastoma cells for immunotherapeutic purposes is feasible and that gamma-IFN transduction results in phenotypic changes that may improve immunogenicity of human neuroblastoma cells.

The effects of histamine H2 receptor antagonists on melanogenesis and cellular proliferation in melanoma cells in culture

B16-C3 murine melanoma, A375P human melanotic melanoma, and C32 human amelanotic melanoma cells were incubated in the presence of (0-4 mM) H2-antagonists, ranitidine and cimetidine. Cell proliferation, tyrosinase activity and melanin content were monitored. H2-antagonists stimulated tyrosinase activity and melanin accumulation in B16-C3 cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Stimulation of enzyme activity and pigment production was accompanied by inhibition of cellular proliferation in B16-C3 cells. The inhibitory concentration of cimetidine was approximately 2-fold higher than that of ranitidine. H2-antagonists failed to stimulate melanogenesis in A375P or C32 cells, but inhibited cellular proliferation in both cell lines. These results are the first demonstration of H2-antagonist induced phenotypic changes in malignant melanoma cells in vitro, and represent a novel mechanism for the previously described in vivo antitumor effects of these agents.
