The effects of met expectations on newcomer attitudes and behaviors: a review and meta-analysis

A review of research on the effects of met expectations for newcomers to organizations located 31 studies of 17,241 people. A meta-analysis found mean (corrected) correlations of .39 for job satisfaction and organizational commitment, .29 for intent to leave, .19 for job survival, and .11 for job performance. However, all of these mean correlations had significant between-studies variance. By using strict conformity with Porter and Steer's (1973) definition of met expectations, we identified a subset of studies that had nonsignificant between-studies variance for all correlations except job satisfaction. Furthermore, the mean correlations in these subgroups were very similar to those for the entire group. Future research should consider both the direction of the met expectations discrepancy (i.e., over- vs. underfulfillment) and alternative ways to measure organizational reality.

Regulation of fetal lung disaturated phosphatidylcholine synthesis by de novo palmitate supply

Lung surfactant disaturated phosphatidylcholine (PC) is highly dependent on the supply of palmitate as a source of fatty acid. The purpose of this study was to investigate the importance of de novo fatty acid synthesis in the regulation of disaturated PC production during late prenatal lung development. Choline incorporation into disaturated PC and the rate of de novo fatty acid synthesis was determined by the relative incorporation of [14C]choline and 3H2O, respectively, in 20-day-old fetal rat lung explants and in 18-day-old explants which were cultured 2 days. Addition of exogenous palmitate (0.15 mM) increased (26%) choline incorporation into disaturated PC but did not inhibit de novo fatty acid synthesis, as classically seen in other lipogenic tissue. Even in the presence of exogenous palmitate, de novo synthesis accounted for 87% of the acyl groups for disaturated PC. Inhibition of fatty acid synthesis by agaric acid or levo-hydroxycitrate decreased the rate of choline incorporation into disaturated PC. When explants were subjected to both exogenous palmitate and 60% inhibition of de novo synthesis, disaturated PC synthesis was below control values and 75% of disaturated PC acyl moieties were still provided by de novo synthesis. These data show that surfactant disaturated PC synthesis is highly dependent on the supply of palmitate from de novo fatty acid synthesis.

Intellectual and academic achievement status after CNS relapse: a retrospective analysis of 40 children treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia

We determined the intellectual and academic status of 40 children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia who had experienced a primary isolated relapse in the CNS by analyzing the results of psychoeducational tests administered a median of 6.1 years after the relapse. Mean scores for full-scale IQ (87.5), verbal IQ (86.7), performance IQ (90.3), as well as academic achievement in reading (89.8), spelling (83.9), and mathematics (83.5) were significantly below normal expectations for age. Twenty percent of the group were mentally retarded and were receiving special educational assistance. The best clinical predictors of full-scale IQ were the number of radiation therapy courses, age, and the presence or absence of cerebral pathology as measured by computed tomography (CT). Children who were younger at the time of treatment, who received two courses of radiation therapy, and who had clinical seizures and structural abnormalities of the brain as detected by CT had the poorest psychological outcome. Although the psychoeducational consequences of CNS relapse and its attendant treatment are significant, these must be balanced by consideration of the relatively low probability of long-term survival without aggressive therapy. Recognition of this type of delayed morbidity with systematic surveillance and prompt attempts at rehabilitation may decrease or at least minimize these sequelae.

Fatty acid synthesis in the fetal lung: relationship to surfactant lipids

The aims of this study were to investigate the control of fatty acid synthesis and its relationship to surfactant production in the fetal lung during alteration of hormonal and substrate conditions. Lung explants from 18 day fetuses (term = 22 days) which were cultured 2 days in the presence of 10 mM lactate showed parallel acceleration of de novo fatty acid synthesis (3H2O incorporation) and [14C]choline incorporation into disaturated phosphatidylcholine (DSPC) compared to culture of explants in glucose. Both the cultured and fresh explants were resistant to the classical short term (4 h) cAMP inhibition of fatty acid synthesis with 3 mM dibutyryl cAMP or 0.5 mM aminophylline. In the cultured explants short term cAMP elevation increased DSPC production, and long term (2 day) cAMP elevation caused a further increase in DSPC synthesis and also stimulated fatty acid synthesis. In cultured explants from 17 day fetuses, dexamethasone (0.1 microM) caused a synergistic increase with aminophylline in both fatty acid synthesis and DSPC production whereas, in explants from 18 day fetuses, dexamethasone inhibited both processes and reduced the level of stimulation of DSPC and fatty acid synthesis seen with aminophylline alone. Dexamethasone also reduced the stimulation of both DSPC and fatty acid synthesis produced in the culture of 18 day explants with bacitracin (0.5 mg/ml), whereas the combination of bacitracin and aminophylline resulted in a synergistic increase in DSPC production. Culture with glucagon (0.1 microM) also stimulated DSPC synthesis but at physiological levels insulin had no effect on either DSPC or fatty acid synthesis. These data show that lung fatty acid synthesis exhibits unique features of fatty acid synthesis regulation compared to other lipogenic tissues and also suggest a link between de novo fatty acid synthesis and surfactant production during the critical period of accelerated lung maturation.

Central nervous system prophylactic treatment for childhood leukemia: neuropsychological outcome studies

The cognitive sequelae of central nervous system treatments for leukemia have become a major concern as more leukemic children survive the initial consequences of the disease. A review of 28 neuropsychological outcome studies published in the past nine years shows that the preponderance of evidence from the better designed studies suggests that leukemic children who do not suffer overt Central Nervous System (CNS) complications, such as CNS relapse, do not experience significant cognitive deficits as a consequence of their treatment. Also, these studies do not unequivocally suggest that cranial irradiation as a treatment technique results in greater cognitive impairment than treatment without irradiation. Many studies are consistent in finding that leukemic children younger than 8 years of age have a worse outcome than older ones although both groups perform in the average to bright normal range. It is currently difficult to conclude that such differences in intellectual outcome were caused by the CNS treatment alone or other psychosocial aspects of acquiring leukemia. The confusion present in the literature could be greatly reduced by combining the research efforts on the psychosocial aspects of acquiring leukemia with the studies examining neuropsychological outcome.

The subacute effects of CNS prophylaxis for acute lymphoblastic leukemia on neuropsychological performance: a comparison of four protocols

We report an assessment of the intellectual functioning after one year of therapy of 117 children treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) who were assigned to one of four protocols for central nervous systems (CNS) prophylaxis. These protocols were (a) 2400 rad cranial irradiation plus concurrent intrathecal methotrexate (i.t. MTX), (b)i.t. MTX alone, (c) 1800 rad cranial irradiation plus concurrent i.t. MTX, and (d) a protocol for high-risk patients that included intensive systemic chemotherapy plus 2400 rad delayed irradiation. Neuropsychological evaluation consisted of the Wechsler intelligence scales, the Wide Range Achievement Test, and selected tests from the Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Battery administered one year after diagnosis. All patients performed in the average range on measures, although the high-risk patients performed marginally worse than did the others. In general, our results do not support previous reports that cranial irradiation results in early adverse neuropsychological sequelae.
