Abstract
OBJECTIVES The study assessed quality of life and depression in working people during COVID-19 pandemic, relative to their physical activity. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study involved 1194 people living in south-eastern Poland, and assessed life satisfaction (Life Satisfaction Questionnaire - 9 [LISAT-9]), quality of life (World Health Organization Quality of Life - BREF [WHOQoL-BREF]), depression (Beck Depression Inventory [BDI]) and physical activity. RESULTS The respondents on average scored 4.32 in LISAT-9; respectively 66.2, 68.3, 69.6 and 63.5 in physical, psychological, social and environment domains of WHOQoL-BREF and 9.2 in BDI. Regularly performed physical activity positively affected the scores in all the psychometric tests in women with higher and secondary education and in men with vocational education. Women presented lower life satisfaction, poorer quality of life and higher level of depression than men. The psychometric scores were also differentiated by type of employment and job. Depression was identified in 44% of all the respondents. CONCLUSIONS Individuals who are economically active during the pandemic report good quality of life and no or only mild signs of depression. Working people with higher education cope more effectively with adversities of the pandemic, compared to those with lower education. Int J Occup Med Environ Health. 2023;36(2):274-90.

Determinants of cigarette and e-cigarette use among youth and young adults-PolNicoYouth study results. Eur J Public Health 2022. Abstract
Identifying predictors of e-cigarette use initiation is important for preventing young persons from becoming smokers. Because of the addictiveness, harmful effects but on the other hand attractiveness and fashion for e-cigarettes among young people, teen use of tobacco related products is a significant public health concern. This study evaluated the determinants of susceptibility to e-cigarette use to both e-cigarettes use and traditional cigarettes in secondary school students in Poland. This study examined a sample of Polish youths aged 13-19 (n = 19241) attending 192 schools, 12 on average in each voivodship. Logistic regression and multivariable logistic regression models were used to calculate crude and adjusted odds ratios. The profile of susceptibility to e-cigarettes use among never e-cigarette users included: pocket money available per month (more than 150 PLN) (OR = 1.7; p = 0.001), 16-17 years old (OR = 1.9; p = 0.001), parental tobacco smoking and e-cigarette usage (OR = 2.0; p = 0.01 and OR = 1.7; p = 0.001 respectively), maternal secondary education (OR = 1.1; p = 0.04) and living in big cities >500 thou. inhabitants (OR = 1.4; p = 0.04). E-cigarette susceptible persons among ever users were similar to never cigarette users in their opinion that e-cigarettes use are less harmful than conventional smoking (OR = 1.6; p = 0.0012) and living with both parents smoking cigarettes (OR = 1.3; p = 0.02). Additionally, the determinants were: female gender (OR = 1.5; p = 0.009) in the age group less than 15 years of age (OR = 1.3; p = 0.007). The results revealed that such basic predictors as: parental smoking and opinion of lower harmfulness of e-cigarettes use are the most important determinants of smoking susceptibility among never or ever e-cigarette users. The intervention should be focused on educating the young people and their parents on the addictiveness and harmful effects of e-cigarette use and smoking. Key messages

The Impact of Functioning Arteriovenous Fistula on Blood Pressure Control and Renal Allograft Function. Transplant Proc 2018; 50:1855-1857. Abstract
INTRODUCTION The prevalence of hypertension in renal graft recipients is high. It was postulated that central arteriovenous anastomosis may significantly reduce blood pressure. This preliminary study evaluates the impact of functioning arteriovenous fistula (AVF) on blood pressure control and renal allograft function. MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred sixty-two previously hemodialyzed kidney transplant recipients (108 males, 54 females, aged 52.7 ± 13.2 years, mean 6.9 ± 5.1 years after transplantation), who had scheduled visits in the first two weeks of March 2015, were included in the study. The recipients were divided into two groups depending on AVF function (65 AVF+ and 97 AVF-). RESULTS Functioning AVF was more prevalent in males than females (47.2 % vs 25.9 %, P = .009). Both groups presented similar allograft function despite the fact that interval from transplantation to examination day in the AVF+ group was significantly shorter than in the AVF- group (5.2 ± 5.3 vs 8.1± 4.5 years; P < .001). The mean systolic blood pressure (135.0 ± 17.0 vs 138.7 ± 14.1 mm Hg, P = .13) was similar in both study groups, but diastolic blood pressure in the AVF+ group was lower than in the AVF- group (80.0 ± 7.0 vs and 83.7 ± 9.2 mm Hg, P = .006). The proportion of patients with diastolic blood pressure >80 mm Hg was significantly higher in patients without functioning AVF (35 % in the AVF- group vs 20 % in the AVF+ group, P= .038). In multivariate analysis, AVF presence was the only factor significantly influencing a diastolic blood pressure with odds ratio 0.43 (95% CI 0.19-0.99, P = .048), which supports AVF as a potentially positive influence on blood pressure control. CONCLUSIONS The presence of AVF in renal transplant recipients was associated with a slight decrease in diastolic blood pressure without clear effect on renal function.

Abstract
Water-soluble upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs), based on polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-coated NaYF4:Er3+,Yb3+,Gd3+, with various concentrations of Gd3+ ions and relatively high upconversion efficiencies, were synthesized. The internalization and cytotoxicity of the thus obtained UCNPs were evaluated in three cell lines (HeLa, HEK293 and astrocytes). No cytotoxicity was observed even at concentrations of UCNPs up to 50 μg ml-1. The fate of the UCNPs within the cells was studied by examining their upconversion emission spectra with confocal microscopy and confirming these observations with transmission electron microscopy. It was found that the cellular uptake of the UCNPs occurred primarily by clathrin-mediated endocytosis, whereas they were secreted from the cells via lysosomal exocytosis. The results of this study, focused on the mechanisms of the cellular uptake, localization and secretion of UCNPs, demonstrate, for the first time, the co-localization of UCNPs within discrete cell organelles.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The functional disorders of the masticatory organ are the third stomatological disease to be considered a populational disease due to its chronicity and widespread prevalence. Otolaryngological symptoms are a less common group of dysfunction symptoms, including sudden hearing impairment or loss, ear plugging sensation and earache, sore and burning throat, difficulties in swallowing, tinnitus, and vertigo. The diagnostic and therapeutic problems encountered in patients with the functional disorders of the masticatory organ triggered our interest in conducting retrospective studies with the objective of assessing the incidence of otolaryngological symptoms in patients subjected to prosthetic treatment of the functional disorders of masticatory organ on the basis of the analysis of medical documentation containing data collected in medical interviews. MATERIAL AND METHODS Retrospective study was conducted by analyzing the results of medical interviews of 1208 patients, who had reported for prosthetic treatment at the Functional Disorders Clinic of the Department of Dental Prosthetics of Jagiellonian University Medical College in Cracow between 2008 and March 14, 2014. RESULTS Otolaryngological symptoms were observed in 141 patients. The most common symptoms in the study group were earache and sudden hearing impairment; no cases of sudden hearing loss were experienced.
