Does self-efficacy moderate the effect of gambling advertising on problem gambling behaviors?

Problem gambling causes significant harm to individuals and society. Financial losses from gambling in Australia exceed those anywhere else in the world. Problem gamblers are overrepresented among substance users and rural and remote Australians. Limited research exists on the impact of gambling advertising on problem gambling among those seeking substance use treatment, in rural/remote areas, and protective factors that may guard against these impacts. This study examined whether self-efficacy to control gambling moderated the relationship between the perceived impact of gambling advertising and problem gambling in people seeking treatment for substance use. Participants (N = 198, 60% female) who had recently sought treatment for substance use from services in rural/remote areas of Queensland and New South Wales, Australia, completed an anonymous online survey. Problem gambling severity was measured by the Problem Gambling Severity Index, with 30% of participants showing at least moderate-risk problem gambling behaviors (12% moderate-risk gambling, 18% high-risk gambling). Moderated regression analyses found self-efficacy to control gambling significantly moderated the relationship between the perceived impacts of gambling advertising and the severity of problem gambling. At low levels of self-efficacy to control gambling, higher perceived impacts of advertising on gambling involvement and awareness were associated with higher levels of problem gambling behavior. However, at high levels of self-efficacy to control gambling, the association between problem gambling and impact of gambling advertising was weaker for involvement and not significant for awareness. Findings suggest that self-efficacy could be targeted as a treatment option to protect vulnerable groups from the effects of gambling advertising. The funding and organization of infection control in NHS hospital trusts: a study of infection control professionals' views

The problems associated with hospital-acquired infection have been causing increasing concern in England in recent years. This paper reports the results of a nationwide survey of hospital infection control professionals' views concerning the organizational structures used to manage and obtain funding for control of infection. A complex picture with significant variation between hospitals emerges. Although government policy dictates that specific funding for hospital infection control is formally made available, it is not always the case that infection control professionals have adequate resources to undertake their roles. In some cases this reflects the failure of hospitals' infection control budgetary mechanisms; in others it reflects the effects of decentralizing budgets to directorate or ward level. Some use was made of informal mechanisms either to supplement or to substitute for the formal ones. But almost all infection control professionals still believed they were constrained in their ability to protect the hospital population from the risk of infectious disease. It is clear that recent government announcements that increased effort will be made to support local structures and thereby improve the control of hospital acquired infection are to be welcomed.

Differential changes in the subcellular distribution of alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionate and N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors in neonate and adult rat cortex

We compared the distribution of alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionate (AMPA) receptors and their individual subunits in synaptosomal and microsomal fractions prepared from 2-day-old (P2) and adult rat cortex. In P2 cortex more [3H]-(S)-fluorowillardiine ([3H]FW) binding to AMPA receptors was in the intracellular microsomal fraction than in the synaptosomal fraction whereas in adult rats the reverse was observed. Immunoblots with GluR1, GluR2/3, GluR4 and pan-AMPA antibodies showed the same profile. In contrast, the majority of [3H]MK-801 binding to the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor and NR1 subunit immunoreactivity was present in the synaptosomal fraction at both developmental time points. These results suggest a developmental rearrangement of the distribution of AMPA receptors within neurons, a process which is likely to be important in synaptic stabilization and plasticity.

Surface expression and metabolic half-life of AMPA receptors in cultured rat cerebellar granule cells

The surface expression and metabolic turnover time of alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methylisoxazole-4-propionate (AMPA) receptors are important factors in determining the involvement of these proteins in synaptic function. We used the membrane-impermeant chemical crosslinking reagent BS3 and subsequent immunoblot analysis to show that a large proportion of each of the AMPA receptor subunits GluR1-4 is surface expressed in cultured rat cerebellar granule cells. The apparent molecular mass of the individual subunits was 105 kDa and the surface expressed crosslinked complex was 530 kDa for each of the antibodies tested. These results are consistent with functional ionotropic glutamate receptors being pentameric subunit assemblies. We investigated the time course of AMPA receptor surface expression using the membrane-impermeant biotinylating agent NHS-SS-biotin. The half-life of surface expressed AMPA receptors was found to be 30 h. To estimate the mean degradation rate of AMPA receptors and total trichloracetic acid (TCA)-precipitable protein we used [35S]methionine/cysteine pulse-chase labelling. The half-life of AMPA receptors immunoprecipitated with anti-GluR1 antibody was approximately 48 h and the half-life of total TCA-precipitable protein from the same samples was 37 h.
