Abstract
BACKGROUND Medical costs associated with cardiovascular disease are increasing considerably worldwide; therefore, an efficacious, cost-effective therapy which allows the effective use of medical resources is vital. There have been few economic evaluations of cardiac rehabilitation (CR), especially meta-analyses of medical cost versus patient outcome. METHODS The target population in this meta-analysis included convalescent and comprehensive CR patients with coronary artery disease (CAD), the status most commonly observed postmyocardial infarction (MI). Here, we evaluated medical costs, quality-adjusted life year (QALY), cost-effectiveness, mortality, and life year (LY). Regarding cost-effectiveness analysis, we analyzed medical costs per QALY, medical costs per LY, and the incremental cost-utility ratio (ICUR). We then examined the differences in effects for the 2 treatment arms (CR vs. usual care (UC)) using the risk ratio (RR) and standardized mean difference (SMD). RESULTS We reviewed 59 studies and identified 5 studies that matched our selection criteria. In total, 122,485 patients were included in the analysis. Meta-analysis results revealed that the CR arm significantly improved QALY (SMD: -1.78; 95% confidence interval (CI): -2.69, -0.87) compared with UC. Although medical costs tended to be higher in the CR arm compared to the UC arm (SMD: 0.02; 95% CI: -0.08, 0.13), cost/QALY was significantly improved in the CR arm compared with the UC arm (SMD: -0.31; 95% CI: -0.53, -0.09). The ICURs for the studies (4 RCTs and 1 model analysis) were as follows: -48,327.6 USD/QALY; -5,193.8 USD/QALY (dominant, CR is cheaper and more effective than UC); and 4,048.0 USD/QALY, 17,209.4 USD/QALY, and 26,888.7 USD/QALY (<50,000 USD/QALY, CR is costlier but more effective than UC), respectively. Therefore, there were 2 dominant and 3 effective results. CONCLUSIONS While there are some limitations, primarily regarding data sources, our results suggest that CR is potentially cost-effective.

Abstract
Background Whether an individually determined appropriate level of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) has a favorable effect on the renal function still remains unclarified. The aim of this study was to confirm the effect of CR on the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) using cystatin C, which is known to be unaffected by physical exercise. Methods The study population was comprised of 86 patients (61 males; average age 74 y/o) with a lower-moderate level of chronic kidney disease (CKD) who was admitted to our hospital for treatment of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and who participated in our 3-month CR program. The exercise capacity was assessed by cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPX) and the eGFR was measured by a formula based on the serum cystatin C concentration (eGFRcys) in each patient both at the beginning and end of the CR. Results In the CVD patients with CKD, both the peak oxygen uptake (VO2) and peak work rate (WR) improved significantly after CR (15.0 ± 3 to 15.8 ± 3 ml/min/kg, p = 0.002. 65.5 ± 21 to 70.2 ± 25 W, p = 0.001). Regarding the renal function, the eGFRcys improved (45.2 ± 11 to 47.3 ± 13 ml/min/1.73 m2, p = 0.023), however, the eGFR assessed by the serum creatinine (eGFRcr) did not improve after CR (45.1 ± 12 to 44.9 ± 13 ml/min/1.73 m2, p = 0.834). Conclusions In CVD patients, a novel CR program significantly improved the exercise capacity. Further, CR was shown to have a favorable effect on the renal function when it was estimated by the eGFRcys. Cardiac rehabilitation improved the renal function using serum cystatin C. Cardiac rehabilitation didn't change the renal function using serum creatinine. Cardiac rehabilitation is most effective on moderate to severe CKD patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The GRACE risk score was developed to predict in-hospital mortality for acute coronary syndrome (ACS) using multinational registries, but did not include Japanese data. Therefore, GRACE risk scores are not extensively used in Japan. The present study aimed to evaluate the relationship between the GRACE risk score and in-hospital mortality among Japanese patients with ACS using the Tokyo CCU (cardiovascular care unit) Network Database. METHODS AND RESULTS A total of 9460 patients with ACS hospitalized at 67 Tokyo CCUs between January 2011 and December 2013 were retrospectively reviewed and GRACE risk scores were calculated. Patients in the Tokyo CCU Network database had more severe conditions compared to those of the original GRACE study. There was a strong correlation between the GRACE risk score and in-hospital mortality for patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) or non ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) (r=0.99, p<0.001); however, the correlation was not significant for patients with unstable angina (r=0.35, p=0.126). For STEMI+NSTEMI patients, the discrimination ability of the GRACE risk score was excellent, with a c statistic of 0.87 (95% confidence interval, 0.86-0.89). CONCLUSIONS The GRACE risk score is a good predictor of in-hospital mortality for Japanese patients with STEMI or NSTEMI, and can help clinicians stratify patients by risk for optimal patient triage and early treatment management.

Abstract
We encountered a 45-year-old Japanese man who suffered from pulmonary thromboembolism and huge right ventricular thrombus after inferior vena cava (IVC) filter implantation without apparent thrombus in either the deep veins or inside the IVC filter. The biochemical data showed a discrepancy in the level of fibrinogen between the immunological and thrombin time methods, suggesting hypodysfibrinogenemia. The sequencing of the fibrinogen γ-chain gene (FGG) revealed a novel heterozygous missense mutation in exon 8 - a TGT to TCT transversion in codon 326 - resulting in an amino acid substitution of serine for cysteine (γCys326Ser). The characterization of the protein did not show known mechanisms for thrombosis in dysfibrinogenemia, such as dimer or albumin-binding complex formation. In summary, the current case with a life-threatening thrombotic event was found to have a novel heterozygous missense mutation resulting in γCys326Ser, which was suggested as a predisposing factor of the thrombosis. Known mechanisms responsible for thrombosis in the current case were not demonstrated, suggesting other mechanisms including superimposing inherited and/or acquired risk factors. When a patient presents with unusual thrombosis such as breakthrough pulmonary embolism and huge thrombus in the right ventricle, as in the current case, the laboratory process for heritable thrombophilia should be considered.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a major cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality worldwide. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-targeted therapy is an attractive strategy alternative to conventional cancer treatments for HNSCC, but its efficacy remains controversial. T-cell-based immunotherapy has been proposed as a novel therapeutic approach to improve the clinical outcome for HNSCC. In this study, we report human epidermal receptor (HER) family epitopes that induced CD4 T-cell responses to HNSCC. The results provide support for a novel strategy to treat HNSCC by combining EGFR-targeted therapy with T-cell-based immunotherapy. METHODS We evaluated the capacity of predicted CD4 T-cell peptide epitopes from EGFR to induce antitumour immune responses in vitro. In addition, EGFR inhibitors were evaluated for their ability to augment tumour MHC class II expression in HNSCC cell lines and subsequently increase T-cell recognition. RESULTS Among several predicted peptide epitopes, EGFR875-889 elicited CD4 T-cell responses that were restricted by HLA-DR4, DR15, or DR53 molecules, indicating that the peptide functions as a promiscuous T-cell epitope. The peptide-reactive T cells responded to autologous dendritic cells loaded with EGFR-expressing tumour cell lysates, indicating that these epitopes are naturally processed. In addition, the CD4 T cells were capable of directly recognising and killing HNSCC cells expressing EGFR and the appropriate HLA class II molecule. T cells reactive with the EGFR875-889 epitope could be detected in the blood of HNSCC patients. EGFR875-889-reactive CD4 T cells were also able to recognise several peptide analogues derived from homologous regions of EGFR family members, HER-2, HER-3 and c-MET. Finally, we examined the effects of EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibition or EGFR-blocking antibodies on CD4 T-cell tumour reactivity. Treatment of tumour cells with the EGFR inhibitors enhanced tumour recognition by EGFR875-889-reactive T cells presumably due to the upregulation of HLA-DR expression in the HNSCC cells. CONCLUSION We identified novel CD4 T-cell EGFR epitopes and amongst these, EGFR875-889 functions as a promiscuous helper T-cell epitope that can elicit effective antitumour T-cell responses against tumours expressing HER family members and c-MET. These observations should facilitate the translation of T-cell-based immunotherapy into the clinic for the treatment of HNSCC and provide a rational basis for EGFR inhibition, immune-targeted combination therapy.

Abstract
Magnetization and high resolution neutron powder diffraction measurements have been made on the magnetic shape memory alloy Ni(1.84)Mn(1.64)In(0.52). The compound undergoes a broad structural phase transition, which on heating starts at ∼150 K and finishes at ∼215 K. On cooling there is a ∼20 K hysteresis. The high temperature parent phase is cubic (a = 5.988 Å) with the L2(1) structure in which the excess Mn atoms occupy the vacancies on the Ni and In sites. The magnetic moment is located mainly on the Mn atoms with the same magnitude on both the 4a (Mn) and 4b (In) sites. The low temperature martensite is monoclinic with parameters a = 4.405(2), b = 5.553(2), c = 12.950(2) Å, β = 86.47(10)° and space group P2/m. The magnetic properties of the martensitic phase are complex and indicate metamagnetic behaviour.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The aim of this cross-over, randomized, single-blinded trial was to examine whether intra-esophageal acidification induces sleep bruxism (SB). Polysomnography with electromyogram (EMG) of masseter muscle, audio-video recording, and esophageal pH monitoring were performed in a sleep laboratory. Twelve healthy adult males without SB participated. Intra-esophageal infusions of 5-mL acidic solution (0.1 N HCl) or saline were administered. The frequencies of EMG bursts, rhythmic masticatory muscle activity (RMMA) episodes, grinding noise, and the RMMA/microarousal ratio were significantly higher in the 20-minute period after acidic infusion than after saline infusion. RMMA episodes including SB were induced by esophageal acidification. This trial is registered with the UMIN Clinical Trials Registry, UMIN000002923. Abstract
Magnetization and high resolution neutron powder diffraction measurements on the magnetic shape memory compound Ni(2)Mn(1.48)Sb(0.52) have confirmed that it is ferromagnetic below 350 K and undergoes a structural phase transition at T(M)≈310 K. The high temperature phase has the cubic L2(1) structure with a = 5.958 Å, with the excess manganese atoms occupying the 4(b) Sb sites. In the cubic phase above ≈310 K the manganese moments are ferromagnetically aligned. The magnetic moment at the 4(a) site is 1.57(12) μ(B) and it is almost zero (0.15(9) μ(B)) at the 4(b) site. The low temperature orthorhombic phase which is only fully established below 50 K has the space group Pmma with a cell related to the cubic one by a Bain transformation a(orth) = (a(cub) + b(cub))/2; b(orth) = c(cub) and c(orth) = (a(cub) - b(cub)). The change in cell volume is ≈2.5%. The spontaneous magnetization of samples cooled in fields less than 0.5 T decreases at temperatures below T(M) and at 2 K the magnetic moment per formula unit in fields up to 5.5 T is 2.01(5) μ(B). Neutron diffraction patterns obtained below ≈132 K gave evidence for a weak incommensurate magnetic modulation with propagation vector (2/3, 1/3, 0).

Abstract
This study evaluated the protective role of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38 MAPK) inhibitors and sequestosome 1 (Sqstm1/A170/p62), a stress-induced signal modulator, in acoustic injury of the cochlea in mice. Two weeks after the exposure of mice to acoustic stress, threshold shifts of the auditory brainstem response (ABR) from the pre-exposure level and hair cell loss were evaluated. The activation of p38 MAPK was observed in cochlea by immunostaining 4 h after acoustic stress. To examine the role of p38 MAPK in tissue injury, its inhibitors were i.p. injected into male wild-type C57BL mice before the acoustic overexposure. The inhibitors SB202190 and SB203580 but not the inactive analogue SB202474 dose-dependently decreased the auditory threshold shift and outer hair cell loss induced by acoustic overexposure, suggesting the involvement of p38 MAPK in ototoxicity. We found that acoustic overexposure induced the up-regulation of Sqstm1 mRNA expression in the cochlea of wild-type mice and that SQSTM1-deficient mice exhibited an enhanced ABR threshold shift and hair cell loss, suggesting a role of SQSTM1 in the protection of tissue from acoustic stress.

Abstract
The magnetic anisotropy and the magnetic-field-induced strain (MFIS) in a single-variant Co(47.5)Ni(22.5)Ga(30.0) ferromagnetic shape memory alloy (FSMA) have been investigated. From the magnetization curves for the single crystal, the hard c-axis was confirmed, and the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy constant K(u) at 300 K was evaluated to be -1.07 × 10(6) erg cm(-3) for the single-variant Co(47.5)Ni(22.5)Ga(30.0) martensite phase. The magnitude of compressive shear stress for the variant rearrangement was estimated to be 6.0-7.5 MPa from the stress-strain curves. An assisted stress τ(assist) of 6.0 MPa was applied before applying a magnetic field, and then a magnetic stress τ(mag) of 0.3 MPa was added. As a result, a large MFIS of about 7.6 % was obtained at room temperature in the martensite phase of the single-variant Co(47.5)Ni(22.5)Ga(30.0).

Abstract
We have performed a systematic study on the correlation between magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) and crystal structures, such as lattice parameters, stacking fault densities, lattice strain, and so on, for epitaxially grown Co, Co-Pt, and Co-Pd alloy thin films, and have found that the MAE strongly depends on the axial ratio c/a of the hcp crystal lattice. As the c/a of hcp Co decreases down to ∼1.61 which is smaller than 1.622 for bulk Co, the MAE becomes significantly enhanced up to ∼10(6) J m(-3). Similar trends have also been verified for hcp Co-Pt and -Pd. These results, which are qualitatively consistent with the classic single-ion anisotropy model and the recent first principles calculation, suggest a new effective way to control the MAE of magnetic thin films.

Abstract
The effects of the addition of Co on the magnetic anisotropy in Ni(55-x)Fe(18)Ga(27)Co(x) (x = 1-6) single-variant ferromagnetic shape memory alloys have been investigated. By the addition of Co from 1 to 6 at.%, the Curie temperature T(C) is increased from 318 to 405 K, keeping the martensitic transformation temperatures above room temperature. As a result, the value of the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy constant |K(u)| at 300 K increases with increasing x of the Co concentration and the martensite phase of Ni(49)Fe(18)Ga(27)Co(6) exhibits a relatively high value of |K(u)| = 1.15 × 10(5) J m(-3) at 300 K. With increasing Co concentration, on the other hand, the c axis changes from the magnetic easy axis to the hard axis at 4.2 K, that is, the sign of K(u) is reversed from positive to negative between 2 and 3 at.% Co. Furthermore, K(u) in Ni(53)Fe(18)Ga(27)Co(2) is positive below 100 K and negative above 100 K up to T(C), reducing the magnetic anisotropy around 200 K. From the present results, it is evident that the magnetic anisotropy of Ni(55-x)Fe(18)Ga(27)Co(x) (x = 1-6) single-variant ferromagnetic shape memory alloys is very sensitive to Co concentration and also temperature.

Abstract
G-protein-coupled receptor kinases (GRKs) comprise a family of seven mammalian serine/threonine protein kinases that phosphorylate and regulate agonist-bound, activated, G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). GRKs and beta-arrestins are key participants in the canonical pathways leading to phosphorylation-dependent GPCR desensitization, endocytosis, intracellular trafficking and resensitization. Here we show that GRK4 isoforms are expressed in human breast cancer but not in normal epithelia. In addition, GRK4-over-expressing cells activated the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) mediated by ERK 1/2 and JNK phosphorylation in breast cancer-derived cell lines. Furthermore, suppression of beta-arrestins decreased GRK4-stimulated ERK 1/2 or JNK phosphorylations. These data indicate that high-level expression of GRK4 may activate MAPK signalling pathways mediated by beta-arrestins in breast cancer cells, suggesting that GRK4 may be implicated in breast cancer carcinogenesis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We sought to preserve the microcirculation as a keystone in liver transplantation from a non-heart-beating donor (NHBD). The purpose of this study was to investigate the cytoprotective effects of a serine protease inhibitor, nafamostat mesilate, and prostaglandin I2 (PGI2) on livers transplanted from NHBDs. METHODS Male Wistar rats were used in five groups of nine rats each. In group 1, livers were retrieved from heart-beating donors (HB group); in group 2, livers were retrieved from NHBDs that had experienced agonal apnea (NHB group); in group 3, livers were retrieved in the same manner as in the NHBD group but were pretreated with nafamostat mesilate (NM), 0.2 mg/kg/h, (NM group); in group 4, livers were retrieved in the same manner as in the NHBD group but were pretreated with prostaglandin (PG) I2, 33 ng/kg/h for 30 minutes (PG group); and in group 5, livers were retrieved in the same manner as in the NHBD group but were pretreated with NM plus PG, (NM+PG group). Livers were perfused for 60 minutes with Krebs-Henseleit bicarbonate buffer after 6 hours of cold preservation, after which the perfusate and liver tissue were analyzed in one set of experiments. In another set of experiments, livers retrieved and after 1 hour of cold preservation were transplanted according to the Kamada method. RESULTS In the NM+PG group, the values of interleukin-1beta, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and thromboxane B2 were significantly lower than those in the NHB group. At histologic analysis, sinusoidal endothelial cells were well preserved in the NM+PG group. The number of survivors at 7 days after liver transplantation in the 5 groups were 9, 0, 1, 1, and 3, respectively. CONCLUSION The serine protease inhibitor, NM, and PGI2 supported sinusoidal endothelial cells and preserved microcirculation.

Abstract
Variation in the fungicide, 4,5,6,7-tetrachlorophthalide (phthalide), in paddy field soil was investigated in order to evaluate its decrease after aerial application by a radio-controlled helicopter. The maximum concentrations of phthalide were 309-320 microg/kg dry, which were 83%-96% of the applied phthalide. The organic carbon normalized soil sorption coefficient (K(oc)) was calculated to be 94-96 mL/g at 1 h after the application. The calculated K(oc) values increased to 620-1,300 mL/g from 1 through 9 days after the application and then 4,700-7,200 mL/g 14 days after the application. The half-life of the phthalide was calculated to be 20-31 days.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is well-known that both B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and peak oxygen uptake (VO(2)) are independent predictors of mortality in patients with heart failure. This study investigates the predictive power of BNP and peak VO(2) for survival in cardiac patients. METHODS AND RESULTS A total of 609 patients with cardiac disease participated in the study. They underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testing to determine peak VO(2), with BNP being measured before exercise testing During 502.5 median follow-up days, 29 patients died of cardiovascular disease. In the univariate Cox proportional hazards analysis, peak VO(2) and BNP were both found to be significant prognostic indices for survival. The time-dependent ROC curve analysis (Heagerty 2006) was applied to 3 predictors: peak VO(2), BNP, and then both, with gender and age as adjusted variables. The area under the curve (AUC) compared with the follow-up period curves of peak VO(2) and the 2 combined variables (ie, BNP and peak VO(2)) were consistently over that of BNP. The integrated AUC indices were 0.80 (peak VO(2)), 0.81 (peak VO(2) and BNP) and 0.70 (BNP), respectively. CONCLUSIONS These results indicate that peak VO(2) is more potent than BNP for predicting the mortality in patients with mixed cardiac disease.

Abstract
Variation in the fungicide, 4,5,6,7-phthalide, in water was investigated in order to evaluate the runoff of the fungicide after aerial application to paddy fields by a radio-controlled helicopter. The survey was conducted for 4 months after the application. The average and maximum concentrations of phthalide were 3.7-4.4 microg/L and 30.5-33.8 microg/L in the paddy fields, 0.37-0.64 microg/L and 2.7-7.5 microg/L in the drainage channels, and 0.18 and 0.83 microg/L in a river, respectively. The runoff ratios of the aerially applied phthalide from the paddy fields into the drainage channels were calculated to be 1.7-2.4%.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In patients with renal failure on hemodialysis cardiovascular disease is a major cause of death. It has been reported that diminished heart rate variability (HRV) relates to the unfavorable prognosis in post-infarction and/or heart failure patients. However, the prognostic value of HRV in hemodialysis patients has not been fully established. METHODS AND RESULTS Time- and frequency-domain analysis of HRV on 24-hour ambulatory electrocardiography recording was assessed prospectively in 383 chronic hemodialysis patients (220 men and 163 women, mean age 57+/-13 years, ejection fraction 65+/-12%). During 2110+/-903 days of follow up, 146 patients died (31 congestive heart failure, 13 fatal myocardial infarction, 13 sudden deaths, 26 stroke, and 63 non-cardiovascular deaths). A Cox univariate analysis identified the following factors as predictors of both all-cause and cardiovascular death: age, gender, ejection fraction, presence of diabetes, and HRV parameters calculated in the time- and frequency-domain. In multivariate analysis, a low standard deviation of all normal RR intervals (SDNN) value was the strongly associated with both all-cause and cardiovascular death (hazard ratios [95% confidence intervals] 0.988 [0.982-0.994] and 0.984 [0.974-0.993], respectively). From Kaplan-Meier survival curves, the incidence of all-cause and cardiovascular death was much greater in patients with a low SDNN (<75 msec), even after adjusting for the presence of diabetes (P<0.0001). CONCLUSIONS Decreased HRV on 24-hour ambulatory electrocardiography is an independent predictor of mortality in chronic hemodialysis patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Past studies suggested that plasma norepinephrine during exercise originates in sympathetic nerve endings and that the main origin differs among pathophysiological conditions. AIMS This study investigated the most important site of sympathetic terminals as an origin of plasma norepinephrine during exercise in patients with heart failure using (123)I- metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) scintigraphy. METHODS AND RESULTS Twenty patients with organic heart disease underwent exercise testing and (123)I-MIBG scintigraphy. Systemic (123)I-MIBG uptake was measured 4 hours after (123)I-MIBG injection, and the heart-to-brain (H/B) and lower limb-to-brain ratios (L/B) were calculated. Plasma norepinephrine concentration was measured at rest and at peak exercise. Subjects were divided into two groups: those with preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF> or =45%, n=8) and those with reduced LVEF (<45%, n=12). Plasma norepinephrine at rest did not correlate with H/B or L/B. In the preserved LVEF group, plasma norepinephrine at peak exercise was correlated with H/B (r=0.722), but not with L/B. In the reduced LVEF group, the norepinephrine response to peak exercise correlated with L/B (r=0.642), but not with H/B. CONCLUSION The present findings suggest that norepinephrine concentration is regulated by sympathetic terminal function of working muscles in patients with impaired LVEF and by that of the heart in patients with preserved LVEF.

Abstract
A 67-year-old male with three synchronous tumors in the unilateral parotid gland is reported. Postoperative histological examinations confirmed the presence of three synchronous primary tumors, specifically pleomorphic adenoma, Warthin's tumor and salivary duct carcinoma, in the right parotid gland. To our knowledge, this is the first case report describing three different histological types in the unilateral parotid gland.

Abstract
Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma (BSCC) is a highly aggressive neoplasm and a histologically distinctive variant of squamous cell carcinoma. Since the first description by Wain et al. in 1986, only 18 cases with BSCC in the nasal cavity or in the paranasal cavity have been reported in the English literature. We report herein two cases of BSCC of the maxillary sinus. Case 1 was 78-year-old man, who received preoperative radiotherapy and operation. He was alive without disease for 25 months after the operation. Case 2 was a 60-year-old man who received radiotherapy without operation. He died of lung metastasis 6 months after the initial diagnosis. We reviewed the clinical features of BSCC from the literature.

Abstract
Glucocorticoids are used clinically for the treatment of acoustic injury. However, the protective mechanism of glucocorticoid in acoustic injury has not been completely clarified. Also, the effects of phospholipase A2 (PLA2) on acoustic injury have not been examined to the best of our knowledge. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of methylprednisolone, a glucocorticoid receptor inhibitor (RU486) and a phospholipase A2 inhibitor (quinacrine) on cochlear injury induced by acoustic overexposure. Seventy-eight mice were exposed to a 4kHz pure tone at 128dB SPL for 4h. The auditory brainstem response (ABR) was used to examine the hearing thresholds. Cochlear morphology was examined to estimate the outer hair cell loss induced by acoustic overexposure. Methylprednisolone and quinacrine significantly alleviated the hearing threshold shift and hair cell loss induced by acoustic overexposure. RU486 antagonized the protective effect of methylprednisolone. The present findings suggest firstly that glucocorticoids exert protective effects against acoustic injury; secondly, that the protective effect of methylprednisolone was exerted by binding glucocorticoid receptors, and finally that activation of PLA2 may be involved in acoustic injury.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This animal study aimed to investigate effects of glucocorticoids on the functional recovery of outer hair cells (OHCs) after transient ischemia. METHODS Distortion-product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) was examined before, during, and after transient cochlear ischemia of 30 minutes using albino guinea pigs. RESULTS DPOAE decreased to noise level during ischemia. On recirculation, DPOAE initially recovered with time until 20 minutes after the onset of reperfusion, but thereafter, the DPOAE level gradually decreased toward the noise level in the control animals. Prednisolone and methylprednisolone significantly improved the DPOAE level 60 minutes after the onset of reperfusion. CONCLUSIONS The present findings suggest that glucocorticoids possess protective effects against ischemia-reperfusion injury of OHCs.

Abstract
We have identified cobalt-base superalloys showing a high-temperature strength greater than those of conventional nickel-base superalloys. The cobalt-base alloys are strengthened by a ternary compound with the L1(2) structure, gamma' Co3(Al,W), which precipitates in the disordered gamma face-centered cubic cobalt matrix with high coherency and with high melting points. We also identified a ternary compound, gamma' Ir3(Al,W), with the L1(2) structure, which suggests that the Co-Ir-Al-W-base systems with gamma+gamma' (Co,Ir)3(Al,W) structures offer great promise as candidates for next-generation high-temperature materials.

Abstract
Large magnetic-field-induced strains have been observed in Heusler alloys with a body-centred cubic ordered structure and have been explained by the rearrangement of martensite structural variants due to an external magnetic field. These materials have attracted considerable attention as potential magnetic actuator materials. Here we report the magnetic-field-induced shape recovery of a compressively deformed NiCoMnIn alloy. Stresses of over 100 MPa are generated in the material on the application of a magnetic field of 70 kOe; such stress levels are approximately 50 times larger than that generated in a previous ferromagnetic shape-memory alloy. We observed 3 per cent deformation and almost full recovery of the original shape of the alloy. We attribute this deformation behaviour to a reverse transformation from the antiferromagnetic (or paramagnetic) martensitic to the ferromagnetic parent phase at 298 K in the Ni45Co5Mn36.7In13.3 single crystal.

Abstract
Here we show that human papillomavirus (HPV) E6 and E7 oncoproteins induce hWAPL expression. In addition, small interfering RNA (siRNA) of hWAPL suppressed the growth of tumours derived from SiHa cells in nude mice. Thus, hWAPL may be one of the effective targets of uterine cervical cancer therapy.
