Abstract
Abnormalities of early and middle latency auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) are widespread in schizophrenia and have been suggested to be associated with cognitive deficits in schizophrenia patients. In this cross-sectional study with schizophrenia patients (n=30) and psychiatrically healthy counterparts (n=31) (matched for age, sex, education), we investigated whether auditory information processing (measured via amplitudes and gating of the auditory ERPs P50, N100 and P200) correlates with neuropsychological performance across cognitive domains. The groups differed significantly in amplitudes and gating of N100 and P200 potentials as well as in neuropsychological performance, but not in P50 amplitude and gating. Neither amplitudes nor gating of auditory ERPs correlated with neuropsychological performance. Neuropsychological intergroup differences could not be explained by abnormalities in auditory information processing. Although pronounced impairments exist on the levels of both auditory information processing and cognitive performance in schizophrenia, these abnormalities are not directly associated with each other.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Cognitive deficits and visual impairment in the magnocellular (M) pathway, have been independently reported in schizophrenia. The current study examined the association between neuropsychological (NPS) performance and visual evoked potentials (VEPs: N80/P1 to M- and P(parvocellular)-biased visual stimuli) in schizophrenia and healthy controls. METHODS NPS performance and VEPs were measured in n = 44 patients and n = 34 matched controls. Standardized NPS-scores were combined into Domains and a PCA (Principal Component Analysis) generated Composite. Group differences were assessed via (M)ANOVAs, association between NPS and VEP parameters via PCA, Pearson's coefficient and bootstrapping. Logistic regression was employed to assess classification power. RESULTS Patients showed general cognitive impairment, whereas group differences for VEP-parameters were non-significant. In patients, N80 latency across conditions loaded onto one factor with cognitive composite, showed significant negative correlations of medium effect sizes with NPS performance for M/P mixed stimuli and classified low and high performance with 70% accuracy. CONCLUSION The study provides no evidence for early visual pathway impairment but suggests a heightened association between early visual processing and cognitive performance in schizophrenia. SIGNIFICANCE Our results lend support to bottom-up models of cognitive function in schizophrenia and implicate visual N80 latency as a potential biomarker of cognitive deficits in schizophrenia.

Abstract
Perceptual closure is the ability of the brain to recognize a complete object based on fragmentary information and has been known to be impaired in schizophrenia. Here, the neural integrity of perceptual closure in schizophrenia with different disease onsets was evaluated by examining the generation of event-related potential (ERP) components (P₁₀₀, N₁₈₀, and N(cl)). ERPs were recorded from 40 patients (19 early-onset schizophrenia, "EOS" and 21 adult-onset schizophrenia, "AOS") and 40 age-matched healthy volunteers. Brain electric source analysis (BESA) was applied to localize the cerebral generators underlying perceptual closure. Patients showed an impaired generation of N(cl) and P₁₀₀ components. P₁₀₀ and N(cl) amplitudes were significantly reduced in both AOS and EOS (P<0.01). Moreover, N180 and N(cl) amplitudes were significantly increased with age in controls and patients (P<0.01). In the case of the N(cl), there was also a significant interaction (P<0.001) between age and group, indicating a greater age-dependent N(cl) increase in controls compared to patients. Visual information processing during perceptual closure is impaired in schizophrenia, regardless of age at disease onset. The combined influence of age and group on the amplitude of the N(cl) might support the idea of neurodevelopmental deficits in schizophrenia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Visual impairments in schizophrenia have been suggested to be partly caused by early processing deficits of the magnocellular (M) pathway. This might include disturbed interactions between the M and parvocellular (P) pathways and especially impaired M priming, which can disturb highlighting of relevant information. Such disorders may result from neurodevelopmental irregularities, which are assumed to be substantially involved in schizophrenia. This study sought to test the hypothesis that M priming is impaired in schizophrenia. In order to elucidate this neurodevelopmental aspect, we investigated patients with different ages of schizophrenia onset. This provided a useful design to integrate visual information processing in a neurodevelopmental model of schizophrenia. METHOD Nine stimulus conditions were used to investigate the M- and P-pathways and their interaction in a pattern reversal VEP paradigm. N80 generators were analyzed using source localization (Brain Electrical Source Analysis software: BESA). Forty schizophrenia patients (early-onset=19; adult-onset=21) were compared with age- and gender-matched healthy controls (early-onset controls=19; adult-onset controls=21). Hypotheses were tested using a bootstrap resampling procedure. RESULTS The N80 component was represented by a single dipole located in the occipital visual cortex. The bootstrap analysis yielded significant differences between early-onset schizophrenia patients and controls. We found lower amplitudes in response to mixed M-P conditions and normal amplitudes in response to isolated P- and M-biased stimulation. Concerning the latencies, significant differences were found between adult-onset subjects and their controls, with prolonged latencies for schizophrenia patients. CONCLUSIONS The early VEP component N80 evoked by mixed M-P conditions is assumed to be a correlate of M priming and showed reduced amplitude in early-onset schizophrenic patients but not in adult-onset patients. These findings point towards an M priming deficit in early-onset patients and are compatible with a neurodevelopmental hypothesis of schizophrenia, probably reflecting asynchronies in brain maturational abnormalities occurring at different ages of illness onset.

Neutron radiation offers significant advantages for the study of biological molecular structure and dynamics. A broad and significant effort towards instrumental and methodological development to facilitate biology experiments at neutron sources worldwide is reviewed.

Abstract
Melatonin and N-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity were measured in the eyestalks of fiddler crabs acclimated to various photoperiods: constant light, a L:D 12:12 h photoperiod, or constant dark. Following acclimation, eyestalks were collected every 3 h over a 24-h period; they were assayed for melatonin with a radioimmunoassay and for NAT activity with a radioenzymatic assay. In constant light, melatonin levels increased at 1300 h, from 142 to 431 pg x mg(-1) eyestalk; NAT activity increased concurrently, from 97 to 203 pmol x h(-1) x mg(-1) eyestalk, and both remained elevated until 0400 h. In the L:D 12:12 h photoperiod, melatonin levels increased at 1300 h from 28 to 230 pg x mg(-1) eyestalk, and though NAT activity increased significantly, from 80 to 122 pmol x h(-1) x mg(-1) eyestalk, an even greater increase occurred at 0400 h, when melatonin levels were low. In constant dark, melatonin levels increased at 1600 h, from 22 to 196 pg x mg(-1) eyestalk, with a concurrent increase in NAT activity from 93 to 140 pmol x mg(-1) x h(-1) eyestalk. However, the second peak in melatonin (111 pg x mg(-1)), occurring at 0400 h, was out of phase with the second peak of NAT activity (113 pmol x mg(-1) x h(-1) eyestalk) which occurred at 0700 h. NAT may be a rate-limiting step in melatonin synthesis in fiddler crabs under some conditions (constant light and the 1300 h peak in constant dark); however, NAT activity correlates poorly with melatonin levels in a L:D 12:12 h photoperiod and in constant dark relative to the 0400 h melatonin peak.

Abstract
A new microparticle enzyme immunoassay (MEIA), the Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Immunoglobulin M (IgM) test, was developed on the Abbott AxSYM analyzer. This test uses recombinant CMV antigens derived from portions of four structural and nonstructural proteins of CMV: pUL32 (pp150), pUL44 (pp52), pUL83 (pp65), and pUL80a (pp38). A total of 1, 608 specimens from random volunteer blood donors (n = 300), pregnant women (n = 1,118), transplant recipients (n = 6), and patients with various clinical conditions and disease states (n = 184) were tested during development and evaluation of this new assay. In a preliminary clinical evaluation we tested specimens collected prospectively from pregnant women (n = 799) and selected CMV IgM-positive archived specimens from pregnant women (n = 39). The results from the new CMV IgM immunoassay were compared to the results of a consensus interpretation of the results obtained with three commercial CMV IgM immunoassays. The results for specimens with discordant results were resolved by a CMV IgM immunoblot assay. The relative sensitivity, specificity, and agreement for the AxSYM CMV IgM assay were 94.29, 96.28, and 96.19%, respectively, and the resolved sensitivity, specificity, and agreement were 95.83, 97.47, and 97.37%, respectively. We also tested serial specimens from women who experienced seroconversion or a recent CMV infection during gestation (n = 17) and potentially cross-reactive specimens negative for CMV IgM antibody by the consensus tests (n = 184). The AxSYM CMV IgM assay was very sensitive for the detection of CMV IgM during primary CMV infection, as shown by the detection of CMV IgM at the same time as or just prior to the detection of CMV IgG. Specimens from individuals with lupus (n = 16) or parvovirus B19 infection (n = 6) or specimens containing hyper IgM (n = 9), hyper IgG (n = 8), or rheumatoid factor (n = 55) did not cross-react with the AxSYM assay. One specimen each from individuals infected with Epstein-Barr virus (n = 26), measles virus (n = 10), herpes simplex virus (n = 12), or varicella-zoster virus (n = 13) infection, one specimen from an influenza vaccinee (n = 14), and one specimen containing antinuclear antibody cross-reacted with the assay. The overall rate of cross-reactivity of the specimens with the assay was 3.3% (6 of 184). The AxSYM CMV IgM assay is a sensitive and specific assay for the detection of CMV-specific IgM.

Abstract
In Arosa, a coherent skiing arena, all skiing accidents were systemically recorded by the two general practitioners for 10 years. The incidence of accidents to children compared with that of adolescents and adults was of particular interest. The incidence of accidents to children has more markedly decreased. The frequency of collisions is increasing. The most common injuries to children are fractures, followed by sprains and contusions. On the other hand sprains are the most common injury to adolescents and adults, followed by fractures and an almost equal number of contusions. The dangers of skiing and the severity of the injuries are discussed. Demands are made for prevention of skiing accidents.

Abstract
Our 3 patients with simultaneously-occurring hypernephromas treated with simultaneously-directed surgical therapy on both kidneys are described. One patient died with residual neoplasm 2 1/2 years postoperatively, while the other 2 patients are alive and presumably free of tumor 60 and 22 months postoperatively.
