[Personalized medicine and healthcare: where are we now, where should we go?]

The authors of this manuscript are representatives of different subdisciplines of medicine, all of them are experienced researchers. As of their origin, they are practicing doctors from the primary care and from the clinical/hospital setting, diagnostics experts, researchers from healthcare management, health economics, representatives of patients' rights and patient organizations. They are all devoted to the implementation of personalized medicine and personalized healthcare in Hungary. The current manuscript - also meant to be a keynote message provoking further discussion in the medical community - is devoted to correcting for two false ideas. One is that personalized medicine is not yet ready for practical applications, it is merely a research area of futurologists. The other false idea is that only (or mainly) the lack of financial resources hinders the introduction of personalized healthcare in Hungary. Orv Hetil. 2023; 164(6): 202-209.

Artificial sperm insemination in externally fertilised fish as a novel tool for ex situ and in situ conservation of valuable populations

Loss of genetic diversity and accumulation of deleterious mutations may lead to inbreeding depression in captive breeding. To address the problem of maintaining genetic diversity, we developed a new fish spawning method which offers flexibility in crossing diverse species when in vitro fertilisation (IVF) is not available. This method involves the collection of sperm from several males of ovuliparous fish; the sperm mix is then injected by catheter into the ovarian cavity of a female through the oviduct. We demonstrate, using zebrafish as a model for externally fertilised fish, that the sperm survives the ovarian conditions and can fertilise ovulated eggs, which are released from the body cavity during natural spawning. Wild type females were injected with reporter transgenic sperm from homozygous transgenic males before intended spawning with wild type males. The sperm injection method did not have an impact on reproductive parameters such as egg production or fertilisation rate compared to controls. In 25 successful spawning experiments, 20 females produced mixed genotype offspring comprising both transgenic and wild type larvae in varying ratios, indicating that the injected transgenic sperm efficiently competed with sperm released by non-transgenic wild type mating males, and both sperm types contributed to the fertilisation of the released eggs. This experiment provides proof of principle for increasing the genetic base of offspring of fish species, including that of many endangered fish species for which IVF is not available due to lack of timed induction of ovulation or when gametic release cannot be synchronised.

Weak convergence of discrete scattering processes

We show that the discrete scattering process converges weakly to a time-changed Wiener process.

An approximation of stopped sums with applications in queueing theory

We prove strong approximations for partial sums indexed by a renewal process. The obtained results are optimal. The established probability inequalities are also used to get bounds for the rate of convergence of some limit theorems in queueing theory.

Induced oogenesis of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla L.) in freshwater condition

European eel is a catadromous fish species, which means that after living in freshwater premature individuals adapt to sea water, and migrate to the Sargasso Sea for spawning. Although male eel can be sexually matured even in freshwater, to date, it was believed that female eel can be matured only in seawater. Here we show that the process of sexual maturation may be induced in freshwater by treating female eels with carp pituitary (GSI = 9.87 ± 1.55%). It is thus proposed that seawater condition is not an obligatory environment for stimulating gametogenesis and for artificial maturation of the European eel in neither gender.

Estimation of nitrogen balance between the atmosphere and Lake Balaton and a semi natural grassland in Hungary

The paper summarises the results to determine the fluxes of different N-compounds within the atmosphere and an aquatic and a terrestrial ecosystems, in Hungary. In the exchange processes of N-compounds between atmosphere and various ecosystems the deposition dominates. The net deposition fluxes are -730, -1270 and -1530 mg Nm(-2)yr(-1) for water, grassland, and forest ecosystems, respectively. For water, the main source of nitrogen compounds is the wet deposition. Ammonia gas is close to the equilibrium between the water and the air. For grassland the dry flux of nitric acid and ammonia is also an important term beside the wet deposition. Dry deposition to terrestrial ecosystems is roughly two times higher than wet deposition. A total of 8-10% of the nitrates and NH(x) deposited to terrestrial ecosystems are re-emitted into the air in the form of nitrous oxide (N2O) greenhouse gas.
