Camden Coalition Medical-Legal Partnership: Year One Analysis of Civil + Criminal MLP Model in Addiction Medicine Setting

In 2022, the Camden Coalition Medical-Legal Partnership began providing civil and criminal legal services to substance use disorder patients at Cooper University Health Care's Center for Healing. This paper discusses early findings from the program's first year on the efficacy of the provision of criminal-legal representation, which is uncommon among MLPs and critical for this patient population. The paper concludes with takeaways for other programs providing legal services in an addiction medicine setting.

Investigation into a new softening agent for use on formalin-fixed, paraffin wax-embedded tissue

The use of tissue softening agents to improve microtomy of keratotic tissues is employed widely. Many of these softeners contain hazardous constituents such as phenol. In this study, the use of non-ionic surfactants or non-toxic ingredients are investigated with the aim of creating a new softening agent. The new agent should be more effective in facilitating the sectioning of hardened tissue while reducing toxicity and complications associated with sectioning hard tissue compared to a commercially available phenol-based formulation. Four formulations are compared against the commercial product for their capability to section routinely processed paraffin-embedded tissue under standard operating procedure parameters. The trial formulations were shown to be fast acting and enabled improved serial sectioning of hard keratotic tissue in nearly all the cases tested. There was no evidence of adverse staining using either tinctorial or immunohistochemical methods. The new formulations had advantages over the commercially available solutions, improving on the number and quality of sections attainable from the tissue blocks, as well as offering a composition less toxic than phenol-based products.

A survey of child and adolescent psychiatry residents : demographic characteristics, program selection factors, training satisfaction, and career choice

This study attempted to discover how child and adolescent psychiatry residents chose their training programs, what they intended to do with their careers, and how they perceived their educational experiences. The survey was distributed to all psychiatry residents in the United States through their training directors in 1990. The authors received 310 responses. Significant differences were noted between male and female residents. Most residents expressed an intention to go into private practice after training. There were significant differences in residents interested in private practice vs. academic careers. The residents had applied to comparatively few programs and made training decisions early. The study generated objective information that may yield more specific recruitment strategies for child and adolescent psychiatry.

Nipple-areolar reconstruction with buried dermal hammock technique

A buried dermal hammock technique for nipple-areolar reconstruction is described that ensures predictable long-term nipple projection. Fifty-one reconstructions have been done since 1981 with good long-term nipple projection and no complications.

Social workers' use of self-help groups as a resource for clients

Self-help groups are an important part of the network of community resources that are available for social workers to use in working with clients. This article describes the results of a survey conducted by the authors to identify the factors that influence such use. Implications of the findings are discussed in terms of the impact on social work practitioners and their clients, and recommendations are offered for improving the relationship between social workers and self-help groups.
