Abstract
Processed meat products have been increasingly consumed, a highlight being dried-cured coppa, commonly purchased sliced, making it more susceptible to bacterial deterioration and lipid oxidation. The aim of this work was to produce and apply bi-layers films based on gelatin (in both layers) with addition of nisin and/or Pitanga leaf hydroethanolic extract (PLHE) only in the food contact thinner layer, in order to evaluate their effect on the refrigerated storage of sliced dried-cured coppa. Dried-cured coppa slices covered with active films were vacuum-packaged and stored under refrigeration for 120 days. Every 30 days, samples were tested for moisture content, water activity, pH, color parameters, lipid oxidation by TBARS and peroxide index methods, and microbiological analysis. The different film formulations presented no influence on the water activity, pH and color parameters of sliced dried-cured coppa. However, they significantly affected moisture content, bacterial count and lipid oxidation. The addition of both active compounds - nisin and PLHE - in the food contact thinner layer was observed to have the most favorable effect.

Abstract
Mechanical properties of biopolymer films can be a limitation for their application as packaging. Soybean straw crystalline nanocelluloses (NC) can act as reinforcement load to improve these material properties, and W/O/W double emulsion (DE) as encapsulating bioactive agents can contribute to produce active packaging. DE droplets were loaded with pitanga leaf (Eugenia uniflora L.) hydroethanolic extract. The mechanical, physicochemical, and barrier properties, and the microstructure of gelatin and/or chitosan films incorporated with NC or NC/DE were determined by classical methods. Film antioxidant activities were determined by ABTS and DPPH methods. The incorporation of NC/DE in gelatin and/or chitosan films (NC/DE films) changed the morphology of these films, which presented more heterogeneous air-side surfaces and cross-sections. They presented rougher topographies, notably greater resistance and stiffness, higher barrier properties to UV/Vis light and higher antioxidant activity than the NC films. Moisture content, solubility in water and water vapor permeability decreased due to the presence of DE. Overall, the NC/DE films improved all properties, when compared to the properties of NC films or those of films with only DE, from a previously published study. In spite of not having antimicrobial activity against the studied bacteria, NC/DE films did display a great antioxidant activity.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Opioids are recommended as appropriate therapy for the treatment of cancer pain and chronic non-malignant pain. Oxycodone is an alternative agent to its parent compound, morphine, and is available in a controlled-release (CR) formulation that allows convenient twice-daily dosing. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of oxycodone CR as first-line therapy in patients with chronic cancer or non-cancer pain that was not relieved by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). METHODS This was a prospective, open-label, multicentre trial carried out in 8 pain and oncology centres in Italy. Patients (n = 309) with NSAID-refractory chronic cancer (55.7%), noncancer (39.4%) or mixed (4.9%) pain (rating of 4-10 on a numerical rating scale [NRS] from 0-10) were enrolled. Patients were treated with oral oxycodone CR twice daily for at least 28 days. Dosage was individualized for each patient and up-titrated over the first week of treatment. The primary endpoint was reduction in NRS score for pain. Secondary endpoints were tolerability, quality of life and patient assessment of treatment efficacy. RESULTS A significant decrease (57%) in pain intensity was recorded during the first week of therapy (decrease in NRS score from 7.85 +/- 1.4 to 3.35 +/- 1.8; p < 0.00001). Overall, there was a 72.3% reduction in NRS pain score from baseline at the end of the study. Quality of life significantly (p < 0.005) improved during oxycodone therapy, and 91% of patients rated treatment as "effective" or "very effective". Five patients stopped oxycodone CR treatment because of adverse events, and one stopped treatment because of dysphagia. CONCLUSIONS The results of this study demonstrate the efficacy and tolerability of oxycodone CR in patients with moderate-to-severe pain of a variety of aetiologies and confirm the feasibility and effectiveness of moving directly from step I to step III on the WHO analgesic treatment ladder.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE: Relate the occurrence of severe anaphylactic reactions caused by ant stings.METHODS: Case report of severe anaphylactic reaction caused by multiple ant stings, and revision of the literature (Medline and Lilacs). RESULTS: A male patient, white, 2 years-old, suffered multiple stings of small red ants of the species Solenopsis invictas, with the occurrence of severe anaphylactic reactions, and resulting in cortical blindness as a neurological sequel. CONCLUSIONS: The occurrence of such events, not very rare, should be taken in consideration by physicians, once such insects are common in our environment, and their sting can result, sometimes, in severe anaphylactic reactions.
