Symptom monitoring, alleviation, and self-care among Mexican Americans during cancer treatment

Monitoring the occurrence and severity of symptoms among Mexican American adults undergoing cancer treatments, along with their self-care to alleviate symptoms, are understudied; the current study aimed to fill this gap in the literature. A total of 67 Mexican Americans receiving outpatient oncology treatments in the southwestern United States participated. Instruments included a patient-report checklist, the Therapy-Related Symptom Checklist (TRSC), the Symptom Alleviation: Self-Care Methods tool, and a demographic and health information form. At least 40% of participants reported the occurrence of 12 symptoms: hair loss, feeling sluggish, nausea, taste change, loss of appetite, depression, difficulty sleeping, weight loss, difficulty concentrating, constipation, skin changes, and numb fingers and toes. More than a third also reported pain, vomiting, decreased interest in sexual activity, cough, and sore throat. The helpful self-care strategies reported included diet and nutrition changes; lifestyle changes; and mind, body control, and spiritual activities. Patient report of symptoms during cancer treatments was facilitated by the use of the TRSC. Patients use symptom alleviation strategies to help relieve symptoms during their cancer treatment. The ability to perform appropriate, effective self-care methods to alleviate the symptoms may influence adherence to the treatment regimen.

Mexican American clients' perceptions of services in an outpatient mental health facility in a border city

This descriptive-exploratory pilot study analyzed the perceptions of services in an outpatient mental health facility located in a border city in southwest Texas among Mexican American clientele with chronic mental illness. Face-to-face interviews using structured questionnaires were conducted with high functioning mentally ill clients. The questionnaire, with both English and Spanish versions, consisted of items on sociodemographics, support networks, illness experiences, reasons for seeking health services, reactions to being visited in the home setting for follow-up care, receiving care from a mental health professional with a similar cultural background, satisfactions, problems encountered in the mental health delivery system, and suggestions for improving health services. Data from 56 respondents yielded generally highly favorable and positive ratings of services received in the facility. Overall, these baseline data present challenges and implications for delivering culturally competent mental health care to Mexican American clients with chronic mental illness.

Physically handicapped individuals in psychotherapy: some empirical data

This paper analyzed empirical data obtained from charts of eight clients with physical handicaps undergoing psychotherapy in an outpatient state mental health facility in West Texas. Research variables germane to psychotherapeutic issues encountered by these clients were explored. Content analysis of the charts revealed the following salient issues in therapy: anger, dependence vs. independence, anxiety, sexual needs, body image, self-deprecation, and difficulties in interpersonal relationships. Therapeutic interventions found to be beneficial included cognitive therapies with an assertiveness component, interpersonal skills training, and growth-promoting therapies. Focus of therapy dealt with ego strengthening and utilization of competencies, boundary issues, interactional patterns, anger, and anxiety. These preliminary data suggest fruitful explorations of other variables pertinent to coping with physical disabilities, for example, age, gender, and ethnic differences, type of disability, social support, and early family intervention. Implications for practice, theory, and research are identified. The community mental health nurse can augment practice with greater understanding of these at-risk individuals.

Effectiveness of a women's mental health treatment program: a pilot study

This exploratory pilot study sought to determine the effectiveness of a Women's Mental Health Treatment Program. This program was offered in a women's unit within a private psychiatric hospital and advertised as a way to help women deal with problems and issues unique to their gender. Twenty-six women responded to a survey questionnaire that explored their quality of life, social support network, ratings of the program, and feelings of self-esteem after discharge. These women were admitted for depression, anxiety attacks, marital problems, and eating disorders. Overall results pointed to the effectiveness of the program as indicated by the women's positive ratings of their current life situation, self-esteem, ability to resume work after discharge, and written appreciative comments. The various therapies rated as effective as part of the program treatment package were group therapy, individual therapy, assertiveness training, victim survivor, steps study, and esteem building.

Comparison of the social support networks of Filipino and Mexican-American primigravidas

In this descriptive-exploratory study, we sought to describe and compare the similarities and differences between Filipino and Mexican-American primigravidas in social support networks, type of support received, and expectations regarding care from health care providers. Convenience sampling was used, and face-to-face interviews using the Norbeck Social Support Questionnaire (Norbeck, Lindsey, & Carrieri, 1983) were conducted in Filipino and Spanish by trained data collectors. The profiles obtained for both groups were similar in sociodemographic characteristics; possession of an adequate social support network, predominantly composed of the spouse and family members; and expectations of more personalized care and decreased waiting time than transpired. The groups differed slightly with regard to ability to discuss pregnancy with persons reported in the network. Overall findings reflect the central role of the family as a source of support during pregnancy. Recommendations are made to conduct research addressing populations of varied ethnic groups and with different educational backgrounds, populations of single and teenage pregnant women, and spousal support.
